In this U.S. Bureau of Mines study, four underground respirable dust surveys were conducted to determine factors affecting belt entry dust levels and how using belt air to ventilate work areas affected dust exposures. Belt entry dust levels on the surveyed longwall and continuous miner sections averaged 0.59 and 0.26 mg/m3, respectively. The stageloader-crusher contributed an additional 0.5 to 0.9 mg/m3 of dust to belt air, while the feeder-breaker contributed 0 to 0.2 mg/m3 of dust. A 1,000-ft increase in belt entry length or a 200-to 500-st-per-shift increase in production resulted in roughly a 0.1-mg/m3 increase in dust. Using the belt entry as an intake entry on the continuous miner section appeared to reduce dust levels by 0.1 to 0.3 mg/m3 during cutting. Belt air was not used to ventilate the face on the longwall section.

Under platform exhaust (UPE) systems are often designed into metro stations as a means of removing heat generated by trains as they come to a halt in the platform. These systems are designed to extract heat from the brakes and brake resistors directly at the source in order to capture as much heat as possible before it can enter the public areas of the station, or contribute to the temperature build-up in the tunnels. Due to space requirements for the associated duct and air handling units, the UPE plays a significant role in the geometric design of the platform and station as a whole.In recent years questions have arisen as to the effectiveness of UPE systems. However, very little data is available for designers to use when making important decisions on the station designs for new metro systems. This is important as significant savings could be achieved by omitting or re-designing these systems for new build stations; not only due to the capital costs of space provision for the duct itself but also due to the associated operation and maintenance cost of the UPE system.This paper will present recent measurements of the UPE system of the Copenhagen metro together with one-dimensional (1D) simulations, looking at typical dispersion of heat into the station plenum box and air exchange through draught relief shafts as the train enters the station in order to evaluate the effectiveness of the UPE system. The aim of this paper is to disseminate the results of measurements and analysis to increase awareness of the issue and to provide discussion relevant to designers in their evaluation of heat removal systems in new build station designs.

How to connect an effluent conveyance tunnel to riser shaft and diffuser arms of an outfall system is dictated by the ground conditions, which ideally include rock or soil strata of low permeability. Where such favorable conditions are beyond reach, both the complexity of designing and the risk of constructing this crucial system connection increase disproportionally. This paper describes the considerations that went into the approach of connecting a 5-m-diameter TBM drive with the in-river riser shaft of the Annacis Island WWTP New Outfall System in the highly permeable Fraser River sands at hydrostatic pressures exceeding 3 bar.

"A biodegradable flocculant was produced during growth of Bacillus megaterium. The major component of the bioflocculant was found to be a polysaccharide composed of some proteins. Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectra analysis revealed the presence of carboxyl and hydroxyl groups in the bioflocculant, and thermal characterization by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) showed the transition and crystalline melting point at 90-105°C. The effects of bioflocculant dosage and pH on the flocculation of mineral suspensions were evaluated. The bioflocculant exhibited good flocculating capability on mineral suspensions and achieved flocculating efficiencies of 90 percent for kaolinite and 85 percent for hematite suspensions at a dosage of only 5 mL/L. The maximum arsenite removal was found to be 90 percent at a bioflocculant dosage of 2 g/L, which is better than traditional chemical flocculants. This study demonstrates that microbial bioflocculants have potential for application in environmental cleanup, such as in the flocculation of mineral fines and in the remediation of solutions that contain toxic heavy metals.IntroductionBioflocculants are biopolymers produced by microorganisms during their growths. The predominant components of a bioflocculant are extracellular polymeric substances such as glycoprotein, protein, cellulose and nucleic acid (Salehizadeh and Shojaosadati, 2001). Bioflocculants have gained much wider attention due to their biodegradability and safety. In recent years, the study of bioflocculants has attracted wide attention. Bioflocculants can be nontoxic, harmless and eco-friendly. Normally, they exhibit different functional properties, serving as stabilizer, dispersant or thickener. Among these properties, flocculation is of major interest. For example, Phormidium sp. strain J-1, isolated from a drainage channel, exhibited excellent flocculation activity for bentonite particles in liquid suspension (Fattom and Shilo, 1984). A protein bioflocculant produced by Rhodococcus erythropolis could efficiently flocculate suspended solids while losing their flocculating activity by enzymatic digestion (Kurane et al., 1994, Takeda et al., 1991). Klebsiella sp. strain S11 screened from activated sludge was unable to flocculate without the addition of calcium chloride (Dermlim et al., 1999)."

This paper presents a case study of a cyclic lateral pile load testing program performed on two 18-in square prestressed concrete piles (PSC) in Savannah, Georgia. The load test program was developed to simulate the lateral behavior of a single pile under seismic loading conditions for the design and construction of a large LNG storage tank. The lateral load tests included cyclic loading to measure possible degradation in soil response followed by static loading to large displacements (around 6 inches at the loading point). The lateral load was applied through a reciprocating jack positioned to push and pull the piles against each other. The test piles were instrumented with multiple displacement transducers, downhole inclinometer, and strain gauges. This paper provides an interpretation of the test results regarding the pile performance and soil response to monotonic and cyclic lateral loading. A backfitted computational model of the soil resistance was developed to match the test results using the LPILE computer program. The load-deflection and deflection/moment versus depth comparisons suggest that this model appears to capture the behavior relatively well within the general range of suitability for design purposes. New design curves were developed based on the soil parameters derived from the lateral load test results.

To experience this scale of foundation failure in mainly new construction less than 20 years old is unacceptable. This is being further endorsed by our contracting experience in the USA over the last 10 years. Our foundation repair systems are mainly based upon the use of driven mini piles and it was considered appropriate that this type of pile should be upgraded and used on new build construction where the ground was marginal or bad.

"Water is a primary commodity for most industrial processes. It has become a global focus in light of climate change and population growth. Reuse of process water has two major benefits - minimize the amount of fresh water added now and minimize the amount of discharge water that requires treatment later.Mining and mine product processing has its share of reused water. For example, reclaim water from a tailings impoundment, overflow from thickeners and leach solution to raffinate and back again all demonstrate the use and reuse of water in mining circuits. Eventually, a mine reduces production or ceases operations completely, eliminating the option to reuse the impacted water and, thus, requires treatment of the remaining water.Current methods of water treatment remove the impacts, providing clean water for discharge, but leaves behind a concentrated waste that requires further treatment or disposal of a hazardous waste. Freeport- McMoRan is currently testing three water treatment technologies specific for sulfate and/or metal removal from mine impacted water with the approach of transformation not concentration. These technologies provide clean water for alternative use while creating byproducts that could be marketable, or disposed as a nonhazardous material, thereby reducing the cost and longterm liability of disposal.The selection of a water treatment process is site-specific. The volume of water, contaminant to be removed, disposal options, length of time for treatment, location of plant and reagents and discharge requirements are some of the factors that need to be considered when selecting a water treatment process. Common water treatment technologies for mine impacted water consist of low- or high-density sludge (LDS/ HDS), reverse osmosis (RO) and evaporative technologies. In addition to operating costs, these processes require additional handling of the concentrated sludge or brine. Advanced water treatment technologies include ion exchange, solvent extraction and metals precipitation with or without the aid of a biological system. Some of the more complex systems have a series of unit operations to achieve required discharge regulations."

The Dutwa Nickel Project is a nickel laterite atmospheric leach project located in Tanzania that has been under development by African Eagle Resources plc (2012). A bankable feasibility study (BFS) has been progressed to evaluate mining of the resource (107 Mt at 0.92 per cent Ni) followed by hydrometallurgical processing on-site to make a mixed nickel-cobalt intermediate product. The unique relatively high silica contents in the Dutwa deposits, as opposed to limonite, which is more commonly occurring in nickel laterites, presented the possibility for beneficiation of the ores to enhance the leach feed nickel grades and provide economic benefits in terms of operating and capital cost efficiencies.Geometallurgical relationships, based on the results of an extensive variability metallurgical test work program for beneficiation and leaching, were developed for the BFS, which resulted in an improved understanding of ore classifications within the deposit and their responses. The geometallurgical information obtained has been instrumental in making key preliminary techno-economic decisions, such as forecasting whether or not mined material should be beneficiated and was ultimately used to drive the mine plan towards the prioritisation of areas within the deposits that delivered the best cost efficiencies and overall project economic outcomes.CITATION:Elkington, T, Lorenzen, L and Czerny, C, 2013. INTRODUCTION Newmont Gold Company's Rain operations are located in Elko County, Nevada, approximately 9 miles southeast of the Town of Carlin.The property was submitted to Newmont Exploration Limited in 1979 and underwent development drilling over the course of the next four years, culminating in the completion of a project feasibility study in October 1986. Initial project scope included development of an open pit mine, an 815,000 DSTPY heap leach, a 572,000 DSTPY mill (Mill No. 3), and associated support facilities. Approval to proceed was given by Newmont Gold Company management in June 1987. Detailed engineering began in early July, followed immediately thereafter by procurement of major equipment components through various second hand sources. PROJECT DESIGN Keep It Simple In early August, Newmont Mining Corporation, parent company of Newmont Gold Company, became the takeover target of an "investor" group headed by T. Boone Pickens. Details of the ensuing events have been well documented by the press; suffice to say their impact on this project was material and required immediate flowsheet changes. Project design throughputs were increased to 1,000,000 DSTPY and 760,000 DSTPY for the heap leach and mill, respectively, in mid- September. These changes caused major project headaches as all general arrangement drawings had been approved and structural steel as well as concrete contracts were in place. Additionally, ground breaking was to commence in two weeks time! Rain project management assembled shortly after the announced changes, to devise an engineering and construction strategy capable of handling these new business conditions. The project had been justified using a gold price of $325 per ounce with a forecasted overall cash cost per ounce of $230. Hence, strict control of capital expenditures was necessary to maintain development economics. Mill start-up had also been moved forward one month, to August 1, 1988. To meet an already ambitious schedule, construction techniques needed to be simple and proven as most of the facilities were planned for erection during winter at a site with design criteria of -40F and 90 mile per hour winds. Perhaps the most critical factor requiring consideration was that of personnel. Newmont Gold's revised business plan called for corporate-wide production increases from 587,000 ounces per year in 1987, to 1,400,000 ounces by mid- 1989. Labor requirements were forecasted to grow from 900 employees to over 2,100. This fact, in combination with the rapid growth of Nevada's gold industry, led to the expectation that turnover of operating personnel would be extremely high. It was concluded that, to meet cost, time, and operational goals, the necessary strategy could be succinctly put - "Keep It Simple." The Bureau of Mines electrowon hafnium metal with an average oxygen content of' 150 ppm at 700°C from an electrolyte containing 27 wt pct LiCl, 62 wt pct RbCl, and 11 wt pct HfC14. The average anode and cathode current efficiencies were 90 pct at anode and initial cathode current densities of 86 amp per sq ft. Haf-nium metal with an average oxygen content of 440 ppm was electrowon at 800oC from an electrolyte containing 90 wt pct KC1 and 10 wt pct HfCl4. The average anode and cathode current efficiencies were similar to those obtained in the LiCL-RbCl-HfCl, electrolyte. The chlorine gas given off at the graphite anode was vented through either a silica or a graphite tube to prevent cell corrosion. THE current method for the commercial production of high-purity hafnium is the thermal decomposition of Hfl4.1 The iodide method is not adaptable to continuous process techniques. Nettle, Hiegel, and Baker2 studied the electrorefining of hafnium from hafnium sponge containing 800 ppm oxygen. They failed to obtain hafnium with 600 ppm oxygen in their initial deposits and obtained AEC specification for oxygen only after 75 pct of the soluble hafnium had been removed from the electrolyte. Calculations using their data indicated this was approximately 4 lb of hafnium. The electrolyte was then used to produce approximately 3 lb of hafnium with a low oxygen content. However, no data are shown concerning the amount of anode material initially used or what percent of it was dissolved, therefore, results are not suitable for evaluation of a continuous operation. In general, it was not possible to consistently obtain low oxygen content metal with the electrolytes described by Nettle, Hiegel, and Baker. Wong, Hiegel, and Martinez3 investigated the electrorefining process for hafnium and showed that even by strict control of electrolyte composition only relatively low oxygen reduction could be obtained. The oxygen contained in the hafnium anode material tended to transfer to the cathode deposit and only a limited purification was possible. Both the "iodide" and the "electrorefining" processes depend upon hafnium sponge as a starting material. The sponge is normally produced by magnesium reduction of HfC14 ' and does not meet AEC specifications for hafnium metal. Since only 30 pct of the anode feed could be utilized3 in the electrorefining cells, the Bureau of Mines developed an electrowinning process. HfC14 was used as the feed material for the electro-winning process described in this report. Many of the electrolytes used in the electrorefining studies3 ap- peared to be suitable carrier-electrolytes for HfC14. However, in the initial studies on electrowinning, it was desirable to use electrolytes that had low solidus temperatures and could be operated over a wide temperature range to investigate parameters of the process. Therefore, electrolytes containing LiC1, NaC1, KC1, RbC1, CsC1, and HfC14, in various combinations were explored. EQUIPMENT Chlorinator. Hafnium carbide was chlorinated to produce HfC14 in the batch-type chlorination shown in Fig. 1. Chlorination temperatures were measured with a thermocouple placed in the center of the HfC charge. A flow meter was used to monitor the helium and chlorine. The exhaust side of the silica chlorina-tor tube was equipped with a flask for collecting organic material released during the initial heating of the HfC. The temperature of an internal heater, which extended from the HfC14 condensing flask to the hot end of the chlorinator, was adjusted to prevent the HfC14 from condensing before entering the collection flask. Helium and excess chlorine were exhausted through the lid of the collection flask to an aqueous NaOH solution. Sublimer. Initial studies were conducted using a sublimer, Fig. 2, made by placing a 13/8-in. OD nickel thimble 11 in. long, inside a 11/2-in. ID nickel bell 12 in. long, and locking it in place. This unit was loaded with HfC14 and partially immersed in the molten electrolyte for sublimation directly into the electrolyte. In another sublimer shown in Fig. 3, the HfC14 was contained in a "resin reaction flask". Quartz wool, previously heated to 600aC, secured between two nickel wire screens, was placed just above the HfC14 powder. The lid contained a vacuum outlet, a gage, an argon inlet, and an air-cooled pipe for condensing the HfC14. This sublimer was evacuated and heated. The sublimation temperature was not critical and the sublimer operated satisfactorily at all temperatures between 250" and 350°C. Electrolytic Cell. The electrolyte chamber, Fig. 4, was made of mild steel 8-in. schedule 20 pipe, 30 in. long. The exterior was metallized with a Ni-Cr alloy. The electrolytes were contained in a 16 gage nickel or iron liner with a nickel heat shield on top. The cell was heated by a resistance furnace. A 21/2-in. ID by 25 in. long air lock was connected to one port of a two-port cell cover assembly through a slide valve. The cover assembly of the air lock was electrically insulated from the cell and was equipped with a rubber sleeve that provided for the passage of the cathode lead. This allowed the cathode deposits to be removed and a new nickel cathode to be introduced without allowing air to enter the cell. Este trabalho tem por objetivo, através da metodologia de análise e solução de problemas (MASP) focada em modos de falhas prioritários, reduzir o tempo de manutenção não planejada do processo de Sinterização da Arcelor Mittal Tubarão. Os resultados obtidos concretizaram um aumento de 2% na disponibilidade da planta após a elaboração de um plano para corrigir os modos de falhas críticos, revelando a importância e o potencial de ganho em se investir em estudos de confiabilidade e registro de falhas.

Mine workers in heavy and dangerous work are under several physical risk factors, for example temperature, humidity, noise, vibration, lighting and air velocity. Thermal comfort includes parameters such as air temperature, air humidity, air flow rate, radiant heat, metabolic rate and garment insulation. In this study, thermal comfort conditions were evaluated using thermal comfort indices defined as predicted mean vote (PMV) and predicted percentage dissatisfied (PPD) which were determined by measurements taken from an underground coal mine for approximately 100 days. Although the metabolic rate (light work) was kept at 2 met, it was found that predicted mean vote ranged between − 2.58 and 1.68. The predicted percentage dissatisfied index was found to reach 95%. According to the results, it can be seen that thermal comfort may have negative effects on occupational health and safety. The change in thermal comfort index values in the Soma Underground Coal Mine was investigated in detail and the reasons for the changes were determined. Furthermore, determining the optimal working environment for the mine workers was also an aim of this study.

"Developments in pyrometallurgical technology have led to larger furnaces operating under more intense process conditions. In order to maintain the reliability of these furnaces, which are frequently single-line units, the design of the refractories, cooling systems and bindings has become more critical. Traditional thermal and chemical requirements for the refractory to resist slag attack must still be carefully determined. The larger, modem furnaces have placed a new emphasis on the structural properties of the refractories as well as their thermal properties to suit the extensive cooling systems. Based on operating experience, supported by computer models, the refractories and bindings are designed to work together to accommodate the thermal expansions and contractions in order to minimize permanent furnace growth and the risks of leaks. IntroductionElectric furnaces are used extensively in smelting copper and nickel ores and concentrates. Laterite nickel ores and high-magnesia copper, nickel and platinum sulphide concentrates are smelted virtually exclusively in electric furnaces to accommodate the high melting point of the slags produced. Although a number of smelting processes using oxygen-enriched and/or preheated air have been developed to replace reverberatory furnace smelting of conventional copper and copper-nickel concentrates, (lnco, Noranda, Outokumpu, Mitsubishi) electric matte furnaces remain a strong process alternative for these concentrates, either as the primary smelting vessel or for cleaning the slags produced from these processes.The development of large, high-powered furnaces has been an important factor in the growth of electric smelting technology, as evidenced by the list of operating matte and ferronickel furnaces shown in Table I. Because the compressive forces required to maintain a tight, leak-free furnace increase with furnace dimensions, the selection and design of the furnace refractories, cooling systems and bindings require increased attention."

Pricing for tantalum raw materials experienced explosive increases in the period 1978-1979, and-similar declines over 1980-1982. The causes for this are examined. Negative effects on the industry are highlighted. Analysis is provided of subsequent structural changes within the industry which minimize probability of future pricing excursions. Data on markets, sources of material, and outlines of concentration and extractive processes are reviewed. The conclusion is reached that expanded sources, future flat demand, and a broader international base of industry participants are principal forces in this restructure. Flat demand is reviewed as a function of increasing application of tantalum, but in more cost effective forms. This is driven by technical advance, notably in electronics applications.

"Mine refuge shelters are designed to protect mine workers from hazardous environmental conditions after a mine disaster, but high temperature and humidity levels inside these shelters may pose a significant safety risk. Due to the safety risks associated with human testing, detailed thermal models of shelters and human occupants have been developed using TAITherm simulation software. These models are used to predict the temperature and humidity within the shelter resulting from metabolic heating, evaporation due to sweat and respiration, moisture and heat from the shelter’s carbon dioxide scrubbing system, and heat transfer within the shelter. A detailed human thermoregulation model simulates the sensible and latent heat generated by the shelter occupants, and predicts the occupant’s body core temperature and moisture lost due to sweating and respiration. This information is used to assess the safety of the shelter. In this paper we will review technical details of the human thermal model, validation comparing the human model to human subject test data, and results of a mine shelter analysis. INTRODUCTION Portable mine refuge chambers are used in US coal mines to provide protection to mine workers from hazardous conditions following a traumatic event. Although these shelters are designed to supply clean air and sustenance for up to 96 hours, prolonged exposure to the mine shelter environment itself can pose a substantial risk to human safety. Heat generated by the shelter occupants combined with heat from the carbon dioxide (CO2) scrubbing system can raise the shelter interior temperatures and relative humidity to dangerous levels that can lead to heat stress in humans. Unfortunately, the thermal burden associated with mine shelter exposure is not well characterized due to potential hazards associated with underground human subject testing. In order to assess the thermal burden on people within a mine shelter environment, a detailed thermal model was created to accurately predict the temperatures and humidity within the shelter, as well as the impact of these environmental conditions on human occupants. The model consists of a mobile inflatable tent-type mine shelter, 23 humans, and also includes the surrounding mine environment. The thermal simulations were performed using ThermoAnalytics' validated commercial heat transfer prediction code, TAITherm (v12.0). Additionally, TAITherm's Human Thermal Module (HTM) provided the capability to simultaneously model the thermo-physiology of 23 unique humans contained within the mine shelter. The human thermal models accounted for the thermal interaction with the environment and also provided a core temperature response prediction, which can be used to evaluate survivability in heat stress situations [1]."

ANY discussion of State-supported schools of mining and A metallurgy needs to be prefaced by a definition, since the first school to offer a mining curriculum, the Pennsylvania Polytechnic College, was established by a grant from the State. But, so far as can be determined, it received no further State support. It would be tiresome to go into precise details,. and it will be enough to stipulate that by State schools are meant those which derive their main financial support from regular appropriations made by a State legislature. The University of Michigan was the first of these to offer a mineral industry curriculum; its story, as well as those of Wisconsin and Illinois, has been related in the preceding chapter.* Arranging the others in chronological order involves making a decision as to what weight to attach to plans for giving instruction, as contrasted with its , effective initiation. This may appropriately be illustrated by the history of mineral industry education in California. California Among those who came to California in 1849 and the following years were many New Englanders who had a keen interest in education. Some of them, mostly Congregationalists and Presbyterians, sought to establish a school of higher education around San Francisco Bay and eventually succeeded in opening the "Scientific and Classical School at Contra Costa' in Oakland, at Broadway and 5th St., on June 20, 1853. This prospered so well that it was chartered by the State as the "College of California" on April, 13, 1855.
