The great majority of stokers used in residential heating installations are of the clinkering type. Because of inherent characteristics of the underfeed combustion process as it occurs in these small stokers, and because of the wide range of operating conditions encountered in residential heating schedules, not all bituminous coals can be used successfully in residential underfeed units. The problem of providing consumer satisfaction has been attacked by the joint efforts of the stoker manufacturers and the coal industry; the stoker manufacturers have been concerned with improving their product to permit the use of a wider range of coals, and coal operators have made every effort to market selected and better prepared coals. In view of the wide range of physical characteristics and chemical properties of bituminous coals, the problems are real and are receiving increased attention. Some twelve years ago a laboratory method was developed at Battelle Memorial Institute for the relative evaluation of coals for use in residential underfeed stokers. The method was developed in conjunction with work being done at that time for Bituminous Coal Research, Inc., and for individual coal producers, to obtain information on the characteristics of coal that determined the successful performance of the small stoker. Details of the equipment and test procedure were given by R. A. Sherman1 in a paper presented at the University of Illinois Fifth Short Course in Coal Utilization. During the past several years, the evaluation of over forty different coals has been determined by investigations sponsored at Battelle by coal operators in the eastern producing districts. The purpose of this paper is to compare the results and conclusions derived from the various tests with marketing experiences of the operators, and to discuss briefly the relationship of test results to standard laboratory determinations. Equipment Used in Tests Fig 1 shows schematically the equipment used in the evaluation tests. The stoker is a commercial model of conventional design, having a nominal feed rate of 30 Ib per hr. A special laboratory furnace is used, which is tightly sealed to prevent the entrance of secondary air. The complete stoker-furnace assembly is mounted on platform scales which permits the measurement of combustible weight losses occurring during the test. The furnace stack, in which are a thermocouple, flue-gas sampling tube, and smoke meter, is connected to the laboratory exhaust breeching through a friction-less connection. This paper presents the outcomes of the preliminary investigation focused on the potential usage of Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy (EIS) in minerals processing. Currently, Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy has been successfully employed in the characterization of multilayer structures formed as molecules adsorb on flat surfaces and is commonly used in bio-related research. Few studies have explored the application of EIS in minerals processing, particularly for mineral particles and flotation systems. In the first series of tests, the impedance response was investigated as a function of particle size, shape and hydrophobicity using model quartz particles. The particle size fractions and the shape were found to contribute to the impedance response. The more hydrophobic quartz particles resulted in a higher impedance values. Further tests involved pure sulfide minerals including chalcocite, bornite, chalcopyrite and pyrite. The AC impedance measurements were conducted as a function of collector (sodium ethyl xanthate) dosage. The AC Impedance data was modeled using the combination of reference circuits. It has been shown that adsorption of collector onto sulfide minerals surfaces results in a higher magnitude of impedance. Increasing the collector dosage resulted in an increase in AC impedance for chalcopyrite, while a decrease was observed for chalcocite. Significant variations in impedance were exhibited by bornite and pyrite with a gradual increase in collector dosage.

As knowledgeable men in the industry know, a mineral occurrence is found through prospecting but an ore deposit is "made" -made through, first, imaginative and effective exploration; thence through efficient engineering, sales and management. There are two main phases of exploration-reconnaissance and target investigation-each of which can be further divided into two additional stages (see accompanying table). The search for a new ore deposit within a known and geologically mapped mining district involves only the last two stages, whereas the search for a new orebody in a virgin geologic environment involves at least three stages and often the full sequence. Of course, some of the exploration stages may be bypassed depending on available results of previous mineral surveys and/or exploration by individuals, business concerns, and governments.

"Contained in this chapter is a listing of the publications and reference books which have come about as a result of respirable dust research performed by faculty, staff and graduate students in the Generic Mineral Technology Center for Respirable Dust at The Pennsylvania State University, West Virginia University, University of Minnesota, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and Michigan Technological University. These publications have appeared in scientific journals, proceedings of the national and international symposiums, and professional meetings. Complete citations of the publications can be found in Volumes 3 through 6 and Volume 8 of this series. The agenda of the last annual GMTC seminar, held at West Virginia University on February 1 - 2, 1988, follows. The project presentations are organized under the five research areas. All projects currently active were presented to the Advisory Committee. New project submissions were not. The authors were allotted thirteen (13) minutes for their presentations; the remainder of the twenty (20) minutes allotted for each project was used for introductions, transitions, and questioning by the Advisory Committee. Each author used a standard format for presentation of his/her materials for review; handout materials were distributed to the Advisory Committee for reference. Opening remarks were made by Dr. Richard Bajura of West Virginia University and Dean Robert L. Frantz and Dr. Raja V. At the pelletizing plant of the Gol-E-Gohar mining and industrial company two parallel dry closed grinding circuits, each with the average throughput of 300 t/h, are used. Each grinding circuit consists of a burner, a dry ball mill (6.2 m×13 m) and an air separator. The ball mill consists of a 2 m-long drying and an 11 m-long grinding chambers. The iron ore concentrate is fed to the drying chamber by a feed chute. The first 1.35 m of the drying chamber consists of 56 flights in two rows to decrease the feed moisture from 5% to below 0.2% and the rest of dryer chamber consists of deflectors to pass the material to the grinding chamber. It was found that when the feed moisture content increased from 1.3% to 3.5%, the throughput decreased by 12% (35 t/h) indicating a low performance of the dryer. Monitoring the wear rate of flights for a period of 12 months showed that the first 0.8 m length of the flights length did not experience any wear. This means that about 59% of flights do not contribute in material distribution and drying. A DEM simulation of feed chute and the drying chamber demonstrated that due to the inappropriate design of feed chute most of materials do not get in touch with the first 0.8 m length of the drying chamber. To overcome this problem, various feed chute designs with different geometries were simulated by the KMPCDEM© software. With the aim of arriving at a proper material trajectory, where the total length of the flights are used, a new feed chute was selected. The simulation results indicated that if the height of the flights is increased from 1.60 to 2.26 m and the slope is increased from 45 to 48 degrees the material arrive at the first 0.48 m of drying chamber. In this manner, the unused part of the drying chamber decreases from 59% to 36% of the length. After installation of the new feed chute, during a period of three months the throughput increased by 36 t/h.

In this study, free fall tests are conducted with the objective of understanding the breakage properties of waste concrete for the guide of the direction of the better comminution process. Waste concrete of 75mm×53mm is tested at various drop heights with or without heat pretreatment. Test results indicate that a block of waste concrete does not break by free fall, but eventually breaks by repeated free falls. The number of free falls required for complete separation of large aggregates from the cement mortar considerably reduced when the samples were heated at 400?. Therefore, a great energy saving can be obtained when heating the waste concrete prior to crushing. The energy saving was found to be dependent on the height of free fall but in all cases, was still large enough to offset the additional energy required for heating. Also, it was found that the heat pre-treatment gives an additional advantage in that it produced cleaner recycled aggregates. This may result from easier detachment of cement mortar from the aggregates due to weakening of bonding forces by heating. By analyzing the size distribution of the crushed product, a free-fall breakage model is developed using the particle breakage ratio and the breakage pattern. The developed model can be used to predict and to analyze waste concrete processing circuit.

"The present study explores the reactivity and burnability of cement raw mixes containing fired red or white ceramic tile wastes or combinations of the two as alternative raw materials. The results showed that the new raw mixes containing these wastes are technically viable. The reactivity and burnability of the new raw mixes have been evaluated; confirming very good results when the particle size of wastes was less than 90 µm. The chemical and mineralogical compositions of the new clinkers were comparable to clinker manufactured with conventional raw materials. The mix of red and white ceramic tile waste was found to perform as well or better than each type of waste separately, a promising indication that separation of the two would be unnecessary for these purposes.IntroductionPortland cement clinker production consumes large amounts of energy (850 kcal/kg clinker) and has a considerable environmental impact. This involves massive quarrying for raw materials (limestone, clay etc), as it takes 1.7 tonnes to produce one tonne of clinker, as well as the emission of greenhouse and other gases (NOx, SO2, CO2) into the atmosphere. Around 850 kg of CO2 are emitted per tonne of clinker produced.The cement industry is looking for solutions to these problems, to attain sustainability and comply with the Kyoto Protocol commitments [1,2]. For that reason, experimental ways are being explored to develop cements whose manufacture is less energy-intensive, less damaging to the surrounding environment and with lower tendency to emit polluting gas. One of the reach this objective is the use of industrial waste and by-products as alternative materials for cement manufacture. Such alternative materials may partially replace fuel [3,4], conventional raw materials [5-8] or clinker in the final composition of the cement [9]."

The flammability and explosibility of unsymmetrical dimethylhydrazine ( UDMH ) were investigated by the Federal Bureau of Mines to evaluate hazards associated with commercial application of this material as a missile fuel . This program included the following determinations : 1. Temperature limits of flammability in air at one atmosphere pressure ; 2. limits of flammability at selected elevated temperatures and pressures ; 3. 4 . 5. spontaneous ignition temperature in air at one atmosphere and at 200 pressure per square inch gage ( p.s.i.g. ) initial pressure ; spontaneous decomposition temperatures in nitrogen at one atmosphere and at 200 p.s.i.g .; shock sensitivity over a temperature range from about ( ca. ) 25 ° to 50 ° C .; 6. shock sensitivity of reference propellants ( hydrazine , nitromethane , methyl acetylene , etc. ) ; 7 . shock sensitivity of UDMH plus small amounts of selected metal catalysts . Part of the corresponding data was obtained for a mixture of unsymmetrical - dimethylhydrazine and diethylenetriamine ( U - DETA) .

The introduction of digital communications technologies into the underground mining industry, in both coal and hard rock mining, has enabled high bandwidth applications to be applied in the mining industry. Digital networks based on 802.11 b/g/n open Wi-Fi standards have allowed numerous applications to be run over a single communication backbone. One of the many important applications is the tracking of personnel and equipment via RFID Tags. This tracking application has formed the basis of a Proximity Detection System or Collision Avoidance System (Schiffbauer and Mowrey, 2001; Kent, Fischer and Schiffbauer, 2011) thereby improving safety and increasing control in the mining environment. This paper discusses the growth of digital technology as the backbone for communications in underground mining applications. This growth has allowed the ‘convergence of technologies’ (occurring in the general business world) to be available to mine operators in general and underground mine operators in particular. Mine Site Technologies’ involvement with major mining companies and mining equipment manufacturers (OEMs) in developing and supplying their communication systems is also discussed.The latest technical requirements and specifications for communication systems for underground and open cut mines will be reviewed.

The work of the electrical section of the Bureau of Mines may be considered to have had its beginning in April , 1909 , when H. H. Clark was , appointed electrical engineer in the U. S. Geological Survey. The first manuscript prepared by members of this section was Miners Circular 5, which was issued in October , 1911. During each succeeding year additional papers have been published dealing with questions relating to electrical safety. Since 1916 the electrical section has also conducted laboratory investigations on flame safety lamps and gas- detecting devices and has published reports relating thereto . The following selected list of publications covering safety studies and activities of the electrical section has been prepared for the convenience of those who wish to keep themselves advised concerning electrical safety matters . The list includes only such publications as are applicable to present-day prac tices .

While we have not been primarily interested in the determination of hydrogen in the alloys that we have been dealing with, we arc very glad to cooperate in this symposium on sampling and analysis for hydrogen, as we can never tell when we may find it desirable to perform such analyses. Vacuum-fusion Method Our primary interest has been oxygen and carbon, in the analysis of which we think we have become very proficient. Our oxygen-analyzing apparatus is of the vacuum-fusion type (Fig. I). This employs Dr. Derge's type of graphite cruciblc and slit sleeve, with graphite powder between, for heat insulation (Fig. 2) supported in a clear quartz bulb connected to the Pyrex glass system by means of a carefully made ground joint. The latter is kept cool by means of an air blast from a circular copper tube surrounding the joint. The crucible is heated by high-frequency induction and the 24 one-gram samples successively dropped in from the horizontal tube at the top by means of a magnet. The gases (H², CO, N2) are passed through the CuO catalyst held at 300°C. (converting CO to CO²I, H² to H²O) and the CO² and H2O frozen out in the main liquid air trap, while N2 is evacuated. At the end of the operation, shown by the termocouple vacuum gauge indicating a pressure of 10-4 mm. Hg, the analyzing system is isolated by means of the mercury cutoffs, and the CO² and H2oare determined by transferring first the CO2 and then the HzO to the small trap at the right. This is done by placing liquid air on the small trap, then removing the liquid air from the large trap for one minute, which is sufficient to evaporate the Co2 and transfer it to the small trap. The CO2 is then measured by closing the mercury cutoff at the extreme right, removing the liquid air from the small trap, warming it up to room temperature, adjusting the mercury level to one of the three marks on the glass tube (corresponding to three volumes calibrated so that I mm. Hg of CO² corresponds to 0.001, 0.002 and 0.010 mg., respectively, of oxygen) and finally reading the pressure. Liquid air is now replaced on the large trap, the mercury cutoff at the right opened, transferring the COz back to the large trap. The cutoff to the pumps is then opened, the liquid air removed for one minute, thus evacuating the CO², the pumps again cut off and the H2 O transferred to the small trap as before, except that it is now necessary to warm the large trap with a Bunsen burner in order to evaporate all the H2O. This requires about three minutes, as the inner tube must be heated to at least 100°C. In order to prevent H²O from being adsorbed on the glass walls, the glass tubing beyond the catalyst (i.e., to the right in Figs. Incident investigation is of utmost importance in most high-risk industries. This study was undertaken to study the content of past investigation reports to determine the effectiveness of the incident investigations. The study uses a semi-quantitative method to assess the effectiveness of incident investigations in the Ghanaian mining industry by evaluating the quality of past investigation reports. The assessment tool consists of 5 elements with several indicators and rating scales for assessing the quality of an investigation report as a measure of the effectiveness of the investigation. The method was applied to 304 investigation reports of 3 Ghanaian large-scale gold mines, and the results correlated with incidence rates of the mines to determine if any relationship existed. The results showed that the mines differ significantly in the quality of their investigation reports, suggesting differences in the effectiveness of their investigations. In addition, the incidence rates of the mines negatively correlated with some elements of the assessment tool. In general, the method was found useful and revealed areas where improvement is needed. INTRODUCTION The importance of learning from incidents is well documented in the literature. For instance, some scholars regard learning from incidents as important for improving safety [1,2]. Thus, many organisations spend considerable resources in identifying lessons from incidents and subsequently on the process of improvement that follows the identification of lessons. It is therefore important for such organisations to determine the effectiveness of their learning from incidents processes, in order to identify specific areas where improvements are needed, so that interventions can be as specific as possible. The learning from incidents process models the plan-act-check-do approach of management systems, often consisting of four major stages, namely; data collection and incident analysis, planning interventions, implementing interventions and follow-ups and evaluation [3,2]. The investigating and analysis of incidents have been regarded as one of the vital stages of the learning process since it is the stage where lessons are identified [3,2,4]. It has also been noted elsewhere in the literature that results of the previous stage of the learning process are important for the next stage [3]. For example, ineffective incident analyses could result in the planning of ineffective remedial measures. One of the primary aims of incident investigations is to identify lessons from previous incidents which when implemented can prevent future recurrences or minimise the effects of future incidents. There is thus the need for organisations to assess the quality of their investigations periodically since it is one of the means they adopt to improve safety and the quality of remedial measures to some extent depends on the effectiveness of the investigations. Although previous studies [5,2] have assessed the effectiveness of the learning process, and some aspects of the learning process, such as incidents reporting, there is less focus on the effectiveness of incident investigations. The research described in this paper was therefore conducted to contribute to this gap, focusing more closely on incident investigation reports.

The project consists of using geospatial techniques to identify degraded areas and analyze the viability of remediation dredging to mitigate environmental liabilities. The area has sediments contaminated by mercury and cyanide, so it is necessary to reconform the riverbed with the remediated material. Large amounts of zinc ash and flue dust containing more than 80 % zinc are accumulated during galvanization processes at the surface of molten zinc bath and in the chimney respectively. Pyrometallurgical recovery of zinc from both of the ash and dust samples has been carried out. The ash was sieved with the help of an industrial sieve shaker provided with mesh sieve having a pore size 0.9 mm. The oversize fraction cut (+ 0.9 mm) was melted at 550 °C under ambient conditions. The produced ingot (1) was analyzed whereas the coarse fraction of the produced slag (+ 0.9 mm) was treated as the coarse ash or added to it. The dust was enriched with suitable fluxing salt prior to heat treatment at 600 °C for 1 h. The produced ingot (2) was analyzed whereas the resulting slag was mixed with the fines of the ash and treated by hydrometallurgical processing to prepare valuable salts of zinc. Parameters affecting recovery processes such as time, temperature and flux percentage were studied. Results obtained revealed that the two prepared ingots (1&2) were successfully recovered with recovery efficiency amounts to =85 %. The obtained samples meet the standard specifications with relatively low price. Also in the light of the strict environmental regulations of pollution control, reuse of these wastes materials will help in keeping the environment clean.

The Highland Uranium Operations of Exxon Company, U.S.A. is a large uranium mining and processing complex situated in the Powder River Basin of East-central Wyoming. Surface mining and chemical processing of a large relatively low-grade ore body began in late 1972. An underground mine was later developed and began production in November of 1977. Figure 1 shows the location of our operations. During the planning stages of the project, it was recognized that hiring and retaining quality employees would be a significant problem. Other operations in similarly isolated locations were experiencing high turnover rates and were forced to employ inexperienced and poorly trained operators. In an attempt to attract employees, many of the companies provided mobile home or bunk- house facilities, but these costly peripheral ventures did not prove to be noticeably successful.

PART I DENSITY AND ENERGY CHANGES IN COLD-WORKED COPPER IT has long been supposed that when crystalline materials are com-minuted the energy used in the production of increasingly smaller grain sizes is not entirely dissipated as heat but that a certain portion is "stored" as a part of the internal energy of the material. This portion usually has been called the "surface energy" of the particles. The practical interest of the Bureau of Mines in this subject in connection with the energy requirements of crushing processes has led' to the author's attempt to measure the "stored" energy in finely divided calcite by heat-of-solution methods1. The experiments on calcite showed that "storage" of energy could not be proved for this material, because fine grinding caused a lack of chem-ical homogeneity evidenced by loss of carbon dioxide and subsequent adsorption of water on the surfaces of the calcite particles. When thermochemical correction was made for composition changes the cor-rected heat of solution was less for fine material than for coarse. Con-tinuation of the experimental work into the problem of comparing work and heat in the deformation of metallic crystals, where the calorimetric difficulties were less, showed, however, that in the case of copper and aluminum a real discrepancy between work and heat could be shown. "The White Mountain sediment-hosted gold deposit is located in north-eastern China. Mineralisation is associated with silica–hematite–altered polymict breccias that occur within dolomite at or near the contact with overlying sandstone. Economic gold grades are controlled by the distribution of the polymict breccias and can transition rapidly to low or zero grade over short distances. This results in sharp and highly irregular ore contacts on whose accuracy proper stope design and ore control is reliant at this blasthole underground mine.Short-term planning and ore control utilise a grade control model created from infill drilling and grade control sampling (ie face and wall sampling). Typically, the grade control model was maintained by time-consuming manual editing of earlier made contacts to incorporate any new data. This approach also was quite error-prone due to: the complexity of the breccia and ore grade contacts irregularly oriented and/or insufficiently dense drill holes inconsistent incorporation of grade control sampling. These errors resulted in unplanned dilution and ore loss due to inaccurate interpretation of the ore contacts.The primary advantage to implicit geological models over conventional, manually-built wireframe models is that they can be updated very quickly and frequently. In a mine setting, the power and efficiency of using an implicit model is greatest where the use of manual inputs or editing can be minimised. Recently a workflow was set-up for the mine geology team to create an implicitly-modelled ore shape for short-term planning needs by using all data, especially all grade control samples. The resultant 3D shapes provided metre-scale accuracy and consistently reconciled complex ore geometries much faster and to a higher degree of quality relative to the wireframe model. The mine stakeholders can now obtain an accurate ore model that will always be in sync with available data.CITATION:McKinley, S, 2017. "Sintered body of lead zirconate titanate (PZT) was prepared through the spark plasma sintering (SPS) technique. When the mixture of raw materials was calcined at 800°C and sintered at 900°C for 10 min. with SPS technique, the sintered body had almost theoretical density but was a mixture of lead titanate (PT) and PZT. When a calcining temperature of 1100°C was employed, sintered body had a single PZT phase but a lower density. High dielectric constant was obtained for a sample calcined at 800°C, sintered with SPS tecbriique and fired again in the air at 1100°C.IntroductionSpark plasma sintering (SPS) is a recently developed technique for sintering metals and ceramics1. The scheme of SPS is shown in Fig. 1. Sample is put in a graphite die in a vacuum chamber. It is pressed and pulse voltage is applied. The electric current heats the die. It is said that the pulse causes a spark-plasma between particles in the sample. Because of the spark- plasma, sample can be sintered at temperatures lower than that in the ordinary sintering by several hundred degrees of Celsius. The sintering period is also very short2Low sintering temperature and short sintering period in SPS technique cause low reaction rate. It is both disadvantage and advantage.
