A furnace freeze lining is necessary for safety and economic reasons in several smelting operations. The integrity of the freeze lining is put at risk by furnace power imbalances. Although numerous models have been derived to model the growth and depletion of the freeze lining due to power imbalances, no model exists for thermomechanical damage to the freeze lining. This study provides an initial pathway for modelling thermomechanical damage to the freeze lining in an ilmenite smelting furnace using information from the literature and experimental work. A methodology under the framework of continuum damage mechanics is proposed to model mechanical damage to the freeze lining due to phase changes, thermophysical changes, and constrained thermal expansion. Drill cores of solidified slag ingots were used to represent the freeze lining. The modified power law proved to be the best predictor of the softening response of the drill cores. Damage driving parameters were extracted from the raw data, and governing equations of the parameters with respect to temperature were derived for use in a finite element method (FEM) code.

The Atlanta Mine is located in east central Nevada, in Lincoln County, 116 km (72 miles) south of Ely and 80 km (50 miles) northeast of the old mining town of Pioche. From this famous district, high-grade copper ore was mined and shipped to a smelter in Wales in the 1850s; an early day lead blast furnace was also in operation. The Standard Slag Company began operations in May 1975 on the well known Atlanta Mine, which was operated by Roy Hardy in the 1930s. The mill is currently processing 450 mtpd (500 stpd) of gold-silver bearing ore. Mining by open pit is in a brecciated zone occurring between limestone-dolomites on the foot wall and tertiary rhyolites on the hanging wall. The quartz breccia is considered among the most abrasive in the world - shovel teeth must be replaced every week. Stripping ratio is 3.9 to 1.0. Because of the hard abrasive ore, the crushing plant consists of four units: two jaw crushers in series, one Hydrocone, and one Gyradisc. Mine feed to the primary crusher is limited to 610 mm (24 in.) in size. The remaining crushers work in closed circuit with screens to produce a mill feed of 6 to 13 mm (0.25 and 0.50 in.). Hardness of the ore is demonstrated by the fact that the reversible liners of the primary jaw crusher had to be replaced in early 1978 after handling only 39,000 mt (44,000 st) at a cost of $0.095 per mt ($0.086 per st). Another example of the extreme abrasiveness of the breccia ore was the total cost per ton in 1977 for all wear parts in the comminution circuit, including screens and grinding media. This amounted to $2.84 per mt ($2.58 per st). The Atlanta grinding plant consists of three ball mills to grind the 7 mm (1 /4 in.) crushing plant product to 85 to 90% minus 150 microns (100 mesh). Feed rate to the primary Tricone mill is determined by maintaining a cyclone overflow at 28 to 38% solids, which controls the grind mentioned above. A mixture of 90 and 65 mm (3.5 and 2.5 in. ) balls are charged to this primary mill. Both the secondary mills are charged with 50 mm (2 in ) balls. Total ball consumption is 2 kg per mt (4 lb per st). All three ball mills use rubber liners. Primary mill cyclone underflows are fed to the secondary mills close circuited with the same cyclones.

In the Analysis of Retreat Mining Pillar Stability (ARMPS) program, the magnitude of the abutment loading adjacent to a gob area is calculated using an ?abutment angle? concept. The extent of the abutment loading is determined solely as a function of depth from an empirically derived equation. In the recommended calibration method for LaModel, it was believed that the empirical equations for calculating the magnitude and extent of the abutment load, as used in ARMPS, were the best available methods for determining these critical overburden loading values. Therefore, similar calculations were implemented in the LaModel calibration method. However, the latest in situ stress measurements of abutment loading performed in the United States and Australia have shown that there can be significant deviations in the measured abutment magnitude and extent as compared to the predicted values from the empirical formulas used in ARMPS and LaModel. It seems reasonable that the overburden geology, depth, extraction panel width, and mining height should have a significant effect on the extent and magnitude of the abutment load. However, the current empirical formulas do not incorporate many of these significant parameters into determining the abutment load on the pillars. In this paper, stress measurements from US and Australian mines were back-analyzed by using analytical and numerical methods to investigate the measured abutment extent and loading. Ultimately, it was determined that the original empirical abutment extent formula in conjunction with the original ALPS square-decay stress distribution function was supported by the case histories in this paper. Also, for depths less than 900 ft, the average 21° abutment angle was supported by the case histories; however, at depths greater than 900 ft, the abutment angle was found to be significantly less than 21° and should be calculated with a new proposed equation.

As is readily apparent, the reliability of the early-stage costs estimated for any mining project are critical to the viability of that project. An estimate too high might leave a potentially profitable deposit undeveloped or worse yet, available to a competitor. One too low might waste investment dollars in a project not yet economically ripe. There are two aspects critical to any estimate: 1. The cost data used to represent the values of the wages, salaries, supplies, and equipment. 2. The design used to determine the engineering parameters upon which the above estimated values are based. Given that all of the information contained in Mining Cost Service is provided by suppliers, equipment manufacturers and mine operators, one wonders why there is any question as to the reliability of cost estimates developed using this information. Given that it is all actual (as opposed to statistically derived) data, where do the problems with estimate reliability lie and what is the impact of the data on that reliability? The following presents a series of analyses designed to assess the reliability of the cost estimating process. Both the actual cost data and the engineering parameters upon which they are based are examined in an attempt to quantify and understand the importance of each. While several sources of cost information are available (Means, Richardson, Primedia?s Equipment Watch, and individual suppliers and manufacturers), the following rely solely on data contained in InfoMine USA, Inc?s, Mining Cost Service and in its Sherpa Mine Cost Estimating Software.

The purification of hafnium by electron- beam melting at moderate energy inputs and at low pressures was examined in detail . Most metallic impurities and hydrogen were removed in the first few minutes of operation ; oxygen , carbon , and nitrogen were removed at a slower rate . Samples treated by electron bombardment suffered a small loss of weight and a gradual lowering of hardness . The magnitude of each change varied with the energy input and the duration of the melt . Analysis of the data confirms the loss of oxygen as a hafnium monoxide . Approximate activity coefficients for other contaminants are given .

Experiments resulted in a satisfactory laboratory method for restoring permeability to clay-containing cores damaged by fresh water. Clay contents of a number of field cores were measured, and permeabilities of plugs from these same cores were then deliberately reduced with fresh water. This damage is attributed to swollen and dispersed clays occupying the pore space. After damaging, a number of experiments were performed to meaJure the amount of damage and to establish some means by which permeability could be restored. The experiments included flooding the damaged cores with water-miscible fluids such as salt water, acetone, isopropyl alcohol and ethanol. Permeability was not successfully restored in these experiments. However, part of the damage was repaired by flooding with oil; when water was removed by distillation in the presence of immiscible fluids such as air or toluene, permeability was completely restored. This evidence suggested that swollen and dispersed clays could be collapsed to their original volume by strong interfacial and capillary forces. It was further postulated that the required forces could be generated by flooding the damaged cores with a solvent partially miscible with water. The flooding experiments were repeated using n-hex-an01 as the partially miscible solvent. Permeability was restored to five of six damaged cores and substantially increased in the sixth. A large fraction of the restored permeability was retained even after water saturation was raised to its original value with 12 per cent salt water. INTRODUCTION Sharp reductions in permeability often occur when relatively fresh water contacts clay-containing formations during drilling and workover operations. These permeability losses are caused by removing inorganic ions from the environment surrounding the clay, and consequent swelling and/or dispersion of clay minerals into the available pore space.' This phenomenon is generally termed clay damage, fresh-water damage, or simply formation damage; it causes large losses in current revenue by preventing oil wells from making their allowable production. Attempts to repair the damage and restore permeability by flowing salt water solutions or brines through clay-damaged cores containing montmorillonite have been unsuccessful.' This irreversibility is thought to result from formation of brush-heap, or edge-to-face, structures when the dispersed clay is flocculated. The brush-heap structures occupy much more space than the close packed domains present before damage.' One solution of the problem is to destroy the clay-water brush-heap and thus restore permeability. Because no satisfactory method existed for restoring permeability to clay-containing formations damaged by fresh water, the work described in this paper was under taken. The laboratory experiments generally consisted of deliberately damaging fresh cores containing clay and then attempting to repair this damage by various means. Results indicate that generating strong interfacial forces within the pore space of damaged cores collapses the clay brush-heap and restores permeability. These forces are most conveniently generated by flowing partially water-miscible solvents, such as n-hexanol, through a core. THEORY OF THE DAMAGE PROCESS The most common clay mineral groups known to cause permeability damage to formations are the mont-morillonites, kaolins, chlorites and illites. These clays are constructed of particles which can adsorb water on their surfaces and edges and, in the case of montmorillonite, between layers of the basic particle itself. This adsorption increases as water salinity decreases. At low salinities the particles disperse into the aqueous phase. When the clays present in the formation are kaolin, chlorite and illite, dispersion accounts completely for permeability damage to porous media. However, unlike the other clays, montmorillonite particles can imbibe water and adsorb ions between layers of sub-particles, or platelets. These platelets have net negative charges on their faces and are held together by exchangeable (or removable) cations such as Na and Ca decrease in ion concentration (salinity) in the fluid surrounding a particle causes migration of water into the clay layers and disperses the basic particle, while diffusion removes the original exchangeable ions from between the platelets. Once these ions are removed, the facing negative platelets repel each other, causing the montmorillonite to swell until, for all practical purposes, the individual platelets are dispersed. For this reason, fresh-water* damage is much more severe in sands containing montmorillonite than it is in sands containing other clays. Many investigators have shown that even trace amounts of montmorillonite can be responsible for marked reduction in the permeability of reservoir sands in the presence of fresh water." ." With the passage of recent national and state legislation aimed at tighter regulation of air pollution and smoke control, attention has been focused on a problem which has long confronted the coal industry--the disposal of coal waste with its inadvertent ignition. Even as recent as 1935, a decision from the Allegheny County Court of Common Pleas confirms the stand taken on control of burning coal refuse disposal areas. "The uncontroverted testimony is that there is no feasible method of operating a coal mine without a gob pile on the surface, as no use has ever been found for this troublesome by-product of mining; that every large coal mine has a large gob pile close to its tipple; that sooner or later these piles all ignite through spontaneous combustion; that practically every large mine in Western Pennsylvania has a burning gob pile, and that there is no known means of averting such a fire." 19* As a result of the past "no regulation policy," there are presently on the order of 500 burning refuse banks, of which 213, 142, and 49 are found in West Virginia, Pennsylvania, and Kentucky, respective¬ly. 18 Many of these refuse banks have burned for 40 years or more; many others may continue burning for a like period. It is estimated that the annual emission from these smoldering piles approaches 183,000 tons of pollutents which may produce many deleterious effects on the populace, property and vegetation in the proximity to the sources.16 To date, little progress has been made in alleviating the pollution from the currently burning refuse banks; however, numerous investigators who are researching the causes of ignition, as well as preventative disposal techniques (refuse compaction, layering and crushing to finer sizes) have met with some success in handling the newly discarded coal refuse.

The objective of the research was to determine the final distribution of cerium additions to steel, their effect on sulfide inclusions, and the usefulness of radiotracer methods in investigating steel problems. Fifty-gram heats of steel were prepared that contained either cerium 141 and nonradioactive sulfur, or sulfur 35 and nonradioactive cerium. These steels were studied by autoradiography, measurements of their surface radioactivities, optical microscopy, and chemical analysis. Samples of the crucibles were analyzed quantitatively for cerium or sulfur by radioactivity counting methods. The addition of cerium to steel melts reduced the size and number of iron sulfide inclusions in the resulting steel. A significant fraction of the sulfur and most of the cerium penetrated into the MgO crucible during the melting operation, The cerium inclusions in steel were identified as cerium sulfide. Radiotracer methods were found to be versatile and highly sensitive.

Altonorte began as a concentrate roasting operation in 1988 under the name of Refimet. In 1993, a copper smelter was built with a design capacity of 203,000 tonnes per annum of concentrate. Since 2001, many technological advances have been made in Altonorte, where the biggest Noranda Reactor in the world is installed being the first Noranda Reactor reaching above one million tonnes of copper concentrates processed per annum. In 2013, Altonorte was acquired by Glencore. Recently due to various new environmental regulations in Chile, Altonorte has evolved to new standards of operation in order to reach the vision of becoming a World Class Smelter. This paper describes the path followed to improve safety, environmental performance, process capacity, reliability, and productivity. The foundation for the growth and success in Altonorte is our People. Employee engagement and branding of our cultural journey is what allows Altonorte to face the future with the certainty of becoming a World Class Smelter. INTRODUCTION Altonorte is located in Antofagasta, the mining capital in the north of Chile and is the last smelter built in Chile practically completed with second hand equipment. The biggest technological change in Altonorte occurred during the phase 3 expansion in 2003, where the old Reverberatory furnace was shut down and replaced by the biggest Noranda Reactor installed in the world. The vessel measures 5.3 m × 26m. ºAdditionally, this project contemplated a new rotary dryer, three (3) new Peirce Smith converters, new anode furnaces and a new Acid plant. The nominal capacity was to treat 816.000 tons of new concentrate per year. In 2008, a new expansion phase was implemented where a new double absorption acid plant replaced the oldest acid plant. Bottlenecks such as blowing capacity and oxygen availability were solved installing a new air blower and a new contract was negotiated with our oxygen supplier to increase oxygen availability up to 683 tpd. This improvement defined the current nominal capacity of 1.100.000 ton of new concentrate per year. Current process description All concentrates are received by trucks directly from domestic mines or from the Antofagasta international port in cases of imported concentrates; the concentrate warehouse has a capacity of 25 kt where the blend is prepared to feed the smelter.

A simulated rockburst was conducted underground at Kopanang Mine, previously called Vaal Reefs No. 9 Shaft. The rockburst was simulated by means of a large blast detonated in solid rock close to a crosscut sidewall. The simulated rockburst involved the design of the seismic source, seismic observations in the near and far field, high-speed video filming, a study of rock mass conditions such as fractures, joints, rock strength etc. Knowledge of the site conditions before and after the simulated rockburst was also gained. Some of the important findings are listed below: ?Two areas of damage were identified on the blasting wall: (i) an area of high-intensity damage in which ground velocities of 3.3 m/s were recorded by an accelerometer, which was subsequently ejected in a block of rock, (ii) an area of low-intensity damage where ground velocities of 1.6 m/s were recorded by an accelerometer which remained on the tunnel wall. ?High-speed filming revealed rock fragments being ejected from the wall at velocities in the range of 0.6 m/s to 2.5 m/s. The measurements were taken in the area of low-intensity damage. As planned, no gas pressure was directly involved in damaging the wall of the tunnel. ?The attenuation of peak particle velocities for the main blast in the near field (6 m to 30 m), as a function of distance R, was found to be proportional to R-1.7. ?The simulated rockburst was recorded as a local magnitude ML= 1.3 by the Klerksdorp regional seismic network. ?Peak particle velocities from nearby blasting, recorded on the tunnel wall after the simulated rockburst, were about six times greater then peak particle velocities recorded from the same source area before the simulated rockburst.

This paper describes the loading to 25MN of a 1.2m diameter bored cast-in-situ test pile founded in the Thanet Sand which was base grouted. The pile was sleeved over the major portion of its length to test primarily the base response of the pile. The results are presented and compared with similar pile load tests in Thanet Sand.

Heats of solution of cerium metal and cerium (III) chloride in hydrochloric acid were measured. The standard heat of formation of the aqueous cerium (III) ion at 25° C is -166.1 ± 0.3 kcal/mole. Heats of solution of cerium (III) chloride in hydrochloric acid are consistent with the existence of a complex CeC1++ having a stability constant of 1 and a heat of complexing of 5.4 kcal/mole.

An orebody is a mining company's greatest asset; without it there can be no mine. Yet, by the very nature of the industry, orebodies are wasting assets whose progressive depletion must be balanced by continued discovery of new ore to enable both the industry to survive and the raw material demands of society to be satisfied. Although mineral exploration may be viewed as any activity which leads to the creation of investment opportunities in the mineral industry, ultimately new ore can only be generated through discovery. The process leading to discovery may involve a long chain of independent and interdependent events. It will almost always be repetitious and require the examination of many prospects or trials before the goal, a commercially successful discovery, is satisfied. Long term survival of a mining company through regular discovery of new ore, requires a continued commitment of funds and effort to mineral exploration.

Both Eldorado Airlines •and Canadian Pacific Airlines maintain scheduled flights from Edmonton to the 4,000-foot airstrip on the north boundary of the Company property. Bi-weekly flights are made by Saskatchewan Government Airways from Prince Albert. Men and priority freight are flown by Company aircraft direct from Edmonton. From June to-September, when the waterways .are ice-free, freight is carried by barge from the •railhead at McMurray, Alberta, down the Athabasca river to Chipewyan, and across lake Athabasca to• Bushell, the terminal on Black bay, lake Athabasca, a total distance of 265 miles.The Eldorado Operation has been connected by a 12-mile, all-weather highway to Bushell. Where the highway crosses the park-land along the Fredette river, the townsite, Uranium, is under construction to provide services to the uranium-producing district. Spur roads have been built to the Ace, Fay, Eagle, •and Martin mines of the Eldorado operation, and to the properties of Pitch-Ore Uranium Mines, Ltd., and Rix Athabasca Uranium Mines, Ltd."

The difficulties associated with wet-processing fine size coal led the Bureau of Mines to investigate a dry process for removing pyrite from coal pulverized to powerplant fineness. The dry process that was investigated consists of two cleaning steps: First, centrifugal separation is used to remove a fine, pyrite-depleted portion as a product; second, the remaining coarser, pyrite-enriched portion is taken to electrostatic separation in which pyrite is concentrated and rejected. Ball milling and Hardgrove milling were used to pulverize the coal. Three coals from the Pittsburgh seam were treated by the dry-removal process. Over 55 pct of the pyrite, which amounted to 70 pct of the available pyrite, was removed in a reject of 10 to 20 pct from one of the coals. Similar treatment of the other two coals removed about 35 to 50 pct of the pyritic sulfur, which amounted to about 70 pct of the available pyritie, sulfur from these coals. Both centrifugal and electrostatic separations were more efficient when pyrite particles were as large as possible. Separation efficiency was improved by confining the particle size of the feed to a relatively narrow range and by avoiding excessive amounts (more than 10 pct) of dust in the electrostatic range. The removal efficiency was increased with the use of stage grinding.

This experimental research was performed to determine rate - of - reaction constants on the MnO - C and Mn , C₂ - 3MnO systems at 1,100 ° , 1,150 ° , and 1,185 ° C. Reactions were conducted at atmospheric pressure under controlled flow of purified helium through the furnace chamber . The weight - loss method defined reduction percentages , and reaction products were identified by X- ray methods . The system Mn0 - C followed a linear reaction rate , and experimental results produced an apparent activation energy of 55.8 kcal per mole of Mn0 . The system Mn, C - 3Mn0 followed a parabolic rate of reaction law and yielded an apparent activation energy of 114.4 kcal per mole for the reaction .

"The Collieries Research Laboratory of the Chamber of Mines of South Africa is developing a coherent system of programs to aid in the full spectrum of activities arising in the planning of new as well as operating mining enterprises. It is the purpose of this paper to describe the design and application of two subsystems in the complex.One of these subsystems is an initial version of a production simulator. This program draws upon a model of a mining enterprise and simulates the operational and financial aspects of a set of alternative mine production plans.These plans are specified in terms of proposed sequences of operations. Details such as reserves, production rates, resource requirements and so on, are taken from the model.Physically, the model takes the form of a cross-referenced data base, maintained by means of a general file maintenance system which is another subsystem described.The paper concludes with a description and analysis of the first practical application of the two programs."

Increasing global demand for commodity metals and capital and the greater operating costs of mining and metal production present significant challenges for the metals mining industry. Current conventional technologies may not be feasible for processing deposits of declining grade, challenging mineralogy or those that occur at increasingly greater depths. To overcome these issues, the development of a step-change technology such as in situ recovery (ISR), which reduces mining and avoids milling costs, may be vital in ensuring future economic metal production. ISR has been used extensively to treat porous soft rock deposits such as the water-soluble salts, sylvite and halite. Although ISR has typically been used for mining conventionally uneconomic uranium ores, it has also been used less frequently for the treatment of other restricted permeability hard rock deposits, such as those containing copper and gold. The reason for the limited uptake of the technology for hard rock mineralisations is primarily due to low natural rock porosity and permeability and hence poor response to available lixiviant. However, additional challenges include solution containment, management of groundwater and regulatory, ecological and societal requirements and expectations. CSIRO has focused on understanding the challenges of hard rock ISR and identifying global capabilities that can contribute to developing the essential enabling technical areas required to realise ISR. Specific focus areas include geochemistry and advanced resource characterisation; drilling and controlled rock-breaking technologies; solution chemistry and environmentally benign lixiviant systems; lixiviant delivery systems and ‘subsurface mixing’; subsurface hydrology and reactive transport mechanisms and models; downstream processing options; legal, social and environmental aspects; and techno-economic modelling. This paper will discuss ISR challenges including industry feedback focused on addressing this issue, gaps preventing ISR from being applied in practice, capabilities to overcome these gaps and the development of a collaborative approach to making hard rock ISR a reality.CITATION:Kuhar, L L, Breuer, P, Robinson, D J and McFarlane, A, 2015. An evaluation was recently performed on a district recirculation system at a trona mine in Granger, Wyoming. A 1.52m (5 ft) diameter, 37.3kw (50 hp) vane axial fan was installed in a crosscut between the intake and return airways and recirculated approximately 31.4 m'/sec (66,578 ft'/min) of air back into the intake. This amounted to a recirculation factor of approximately 20 pct of the return air. This air was part of the primary ventilation to three different continuous miner sections at operating distances of between 6l0m (2,000 ft) and 1,829m (6,000 ft) from the recirculation fan. The mine environment was constantly monitored for respirable dust, methane, and carbon monoxide in the operating sections and in the main intake and return entries. In addition, air samples were taken with and without the recirculation system during the evaluation and analyzed using gas chromatography. The results of this study showed only small increases in dust, while all other mine contaminants remained at such low levels that it was impossible to determine any relative changes from the recirculation system. Because of this, a brief SF. tracer gas analysis study was subsequently performed to more precisely determine an increase in a mine contaminant with the recirculation system.
