The Blue Cube Mineral Quantifier Inline (MQi) instrument uses reflective light spectroscopy and advanced chemometrics to measure mineral or elemental grade in a slurry line. The instrument takes scans continuously and sends data to the DCS or PLC control system.Controlling the concentrate grades on a flotation circuit using low-frequency measurements can be difficult or impossible, especially on a circuit that has fast process dynamics. The ability to rapidly measure changes in grade makes it possible to continuously manipulate the flotation circuit operating parameters such as level, airflow and reagent addition set points to optimise plant performance throughout changing conditions.At Barrick’s Porgera mine in Papua New Guinea the flotation circuit feeds sulfide concentrate slurry to a pressure oxidation circuit. In order to maximise gold recovery in the flotation plant and increase performance in the pressure oxidation process, there is a stringent requirement to maintain a stable and optimum sulfur grade. The gold recovery is directly affected by the sulfur grade as most of the gold at Porgera is submicroscopic and associated with the sulfides (disseminated?pyrite).Porgera considered various points in the flotation circuit for installing Blue Cube analysers. This was part of a plant upgrade to improve process control. Due to budget constraints it was decided to initially only install one Blue Cube analyser on the final concentrate stream of the flotation circuit measuring sulfur, sulfides, gold and particle size. The accuracy of the calibration results were very good for all these properties. The sulfur measurement was used in an advanced control system to optimise and stabilise the grade. The paper presents comparisons between mineral grades determined using analytical laboratory analyses and the online Blue Cube data measurements, as well as benefits achieved by measuring grade online. "A coordinated, integrated research effort aimed at studying the scientific, engineering and medical aspects of the respirable dust problem is underway in the areas of dust generation, dust dispersion and dilution, dust characterization, interaction of dust and lungs, and relationship of seam characteristics to dust generation and mobility. (FIGURE 24) The Center's research program explores these concerns with the objective of refining existing strategies and developing new respirable dust control techniques that are consistent with the dust-lung interaction processes that lead to mine worker disability. The fundamental aspects of this work are applicable to the control of respirable dust problems in both hard rock mines and coal mines and to other dusts such as diesel-generated.Research projects in the Generic Mineral Technology Center for Respirable Dust have effected several improved methods for the preparation and characterization of the dusts needed by these projects. Superior procedures for generating ""standard"" dust samples have been developed and are in regular use in the laboratory. Questions raised during the course of some projects regarding ""stale"" versus ""fresh"" dust have led to the development of sampling techniques where the dust is directly collected in a surfactant. MSHA and CANMET have requested and received information on Center generated software. An equipment manufacturer, TSI, Inc., requesting input on modifying the inlet of an aerosol sampler has been assisted as a result of research that was conducted at the University of Minnesota.The objectives, scope and progress of all the research projects in the Center, in the form of abstracts and reports, have been detailed in Volume 1 of this series. Research papers written by the principle investigators and resulting from the findings of projects (FIGURE 25) and which are funded by U.S. Bureau of Mines grant number G1135142 have been published in Volumes 3 through 6 and Volume 8 of this series. The problem of mine pumping is so much affected by local conditions, and those conditions are so liable to changes during the life of a mine, that the best system to use is difficult to determine. The experience of the writer has been that, in general, for copper mines, electric pumping is most satisfactory unless the quantity of water to be pumped is great or the mine does not use electric power for any other purpose. As a rule, however, figuring on the cost of necessary power plant, the total cost of installation is greater with electric pumps than steam pumps. As the water is liable to be gritty, outside-packed plunger pumps are to be recommended, and if the water is not acid, or only slightly so, chilled cast-iron plungers pay for their extra cost very quickly in diminished cost of packing. With chilled plungers it is possible to use metallic packing instead of soft packing, if the water is not too gritty or the lift too high. In vertical pumps this packing is satisfactory for lifts up to 400 ft., in the experience of the writer, and may be found satisfactory for higher lifts. For water slightly acid, cement-lined pump bodies have given good satisfaction. For acid water, both plungers and puhp bodies should be made of acid-resisting bronze. For high lifts, especially with gritty water, a satisfactory pump valve is difficult to find. To reduce the unbalanced pressure on the valve at time of opening it is advisable to have narrow seats; this, however, brings high pressures on the seats when the valve is closed. On large valves for lifts of 600 to 1,000 ft. we have used leather, hard rubber, vulcanized fiber, and soft brass; for clear water the latter has given best satisfaction. The difficulties due to grit make it advisable to have large sumps where water can settle, and if possible, to have two of them so that they can be cleaned alternately. At the mines of the Old Dominion Copper Mining & Smelting Co., Globe, it was found that a small air ejector discharging into a mine car provides a very convenient way to clean mud and sand from a sump.

The most important single operation in mining is the ventilation of underground areas in a manner conducive to the health and safety of employees. Adequate volumes of pure air must be supplied at the working faces, along the haulageways, and wherever men work, so as to dilute and carry away the methane liberated from the coal and adjoining strata, noxious gases evolved by the use of explosives, and the carbon dioxide exhaled by men and formed by oxidation of carbonaceous material, as well as any other gases, and also dusts which may be found in mine workings. A sufficient quantity of air must also sweep abandoned or worked-out areas of the mine to prevent the accumulation of gases, where sealing methods are not utilized to isolate old workings. Air, in a quantity adequate to meet the needs of the particular mine to which it is applied, is necessary, and supplying it can be made very expensive through failure to observe good practices in its direction and apportionment." A semi-continuous bench-scale, countercurrent-decantation system, in which the ore was moved countercurrently to the flow of leaching solution, was used to conduct acid-leaching tests on uranium ore with the aid of bacteria. This method, which involved a low degree of agitation, was successfully applied to extract uranium in practical amounts and at practical rates. The acidity of the leaching solution was the main variable investigated in the bench-scale tests done at the Mines Branch, Ottawa. Over 90 11er cent of the uranium was extracted in a six-stage system. The results suggest that this technique could be ap-plied in the utilization of bacterial oxidation and leaching as a method for treating Elliot Lake uranium ore.

Today there is a consensus that xanthate adsorption on sulfide minerals is primarily controlled by redox reactions occurring at specific potentials on these semi-conductive minerals. Consequently, it is possible to control xanthate adsorption by controlling electrochemical conditions in the system by using oxidizing and reducing agents. The scope of this study was to investigate the possibilities to increase the selectivity of Cu-Fe-Zn ore flotation by applying electrochemical control in the conditioning of the flotation feed. In this work, mild steel grinding in a nitrogen atmosphere was used as the basis to provide a negative starting potential and minimize the amount of oxidation products on sulfide mineral surfaces. To study how different potential levels affect flotation results, a controlled conditioning procedure was utilized maintaining potential at a desired level by titrating the pulp with air. Xanthate adsorption kinetics during conditioning was examined by taking pulp samples for spectrophotometric analysis and laboratory flotation tests were conducted for samples that underwent the controlled conditioning procedure in the potential range of -200mV to +200mV vs. SHE. A clear correlation was detected between chalcopyrite recovery and the potential during controlled conditioning indicating that there was a constant increase in chalcopyrite recovery when the potential was shifted to more anodic values. It is possible that utilizing potential control in the conditioning stage, a smelter grade copper concentrate can be achieved directly in rougher flotation without cleaning stages. Conditioning in favorable conditions had significant positive effects on flotation selectivity of chalcopyrite. The improvement in copper concentrate grade being predominantly caused by the depression of pyrite. By applying the controlled conditioning procedure pyrite recovery in rougher flotation was reduced even low as under 1%, while in the tests without controlled conditioning, pyrite recovery varied between 7.5 – 65.7%. The result of this work indicate that affecting collector adsorption by electrochemical control in the conditioning stage can provide significant improvement in sulfide mineral flotation and industrial applications could lead to decreased chemical consumption, reduced equipment and maintenance costs.

Since the U. S. Metals Refining Co. works was established, around the turn of the century, near the town which is now called Carteret, N. J., it has grown to be a major producer of refined copper and the main source of that special brand known as "oxygen-free high-conductivity copper." Owing to the complex metallurgical problems arising from handling a variety of raw materials such as copper concentrate from Matahambre, Cuba, copper and brass scrap from the New York area, and domestic blister copper, the organization is geared from top management down through its 2000 employes to maintain a high degree of flexibility in plant operation. The Company is a subsidiary of The American Metal Co. Charges for the smelter furnaces, one reverberatory furnace and one blast furnace, are made up in. bedding bins so that they may be tailored to the production of a constant grade of blister copper. The reverberatory furnace smelts the .sulphide charge, which may be a blend of ten different materials but principally the Cuban concentrate, and the matte from the process is poured into a converter. This reverberatory is 80 by 20 ft, silica lined with a slag bottom, fired by pulverized coal, and continuously side-charged from the top by bottom-dump cars which keep the side walls covered. It produces a 40 to 50 per cent copper matte. The fuel-charge ratio is 4.35 tons of solid charge per ton of coal. The furnace has a capacity of 10,000 tons of charge per month and produces from 5000 to 6000 tons of slag per month which must be disposed of. About 5000 tons of converter slag is produced monthly and returned molten to the reverberatory furnace. Flame impingement on the burden is routinely encountered during the initial phase of melting in aluminum reverberatory furnaces. This impingement causes an obstructed pathway for the hot gases, and hence the circulation and residence time of the hot gases are greatly impacted. Moreover, as the load melts, the flames gradually achieve an unobstructed path leading to reduced gas residence times. This flame impingement and constantly changing combustion space volume will lead to vastly different fuel and oxidizer mixing patterns and thus affect the overall furnace performance. Fine tuning the burner operating conditions such as flow rates and injection angles with the changing combustion space could result in significant improvements to the furnace efficiency. However, one has to gain a better understanding of the furnace dynamics to know the suitable parameters to adjust. Physical modeling can be elaborate and expensive to conduct on a regular basis while Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) can cost-effectively address this challenge. In this study, the furnace model is created with a particular loading pattern to understand the flame dynamics in the presence of a piled load. This configuration can be thought of as a computational model of the furnace with the burden at a particular stage of the melting process. Thermal efficiency and behavior of the furnace are quantified and the predicted values are compared with the operational data from an experimental reverberatory furnace.

The Bureau of Mines devised a procedure for selectively extracting platinum-group metals (PGM) and gold from Stillwater Complex flotation concentrate. The Stillwater Complex is the only major U.S. PGM resource. Development of a suitable extraction technique will contribute to its exploitation. The concentrate was roasted at 1,050° C to convert host base-metal sulfides to oxides and the PGM from sulfide minerals to their elemental states. The roasted concentrate was preleached with dilute sulfuric acid to remove easily soluble gangue minerals. After pre-leaching, the concentrate was slurried with 6M HCI and leached at ambient temperature and pressure with a strong-oxidizing agent. Hydrogen peroxide, chlorine, sodium hypochlorite, nitric acid, and a persulfate salt were the oxidants investigated. The two-stage leaching scheme ex-tracted up to 97 pct of the platinum, 92 pct of the palladium, and 99 pct of the gold from the roasted concentrate. The base metals were not solubilized and reported to the residue. No attempt was made to devise a procedure to recover the copper and nickel because they comprise less than 5 pct of the value of the concentrate. Viable techniques for recovering the precious metals from the pregnant solution were sulfide precipitation, cementation with nickel, or adsorption on activated carbon.

USUALLY we forget about the things which move along smoothly. There are no causes for worry when there are no troubles. But when troubles arise we must put forth some thought and effort to alleviate them. No one "worries about his automobile until it begins to knock, develop flat tires, or refuses to start. However, when these ailments become apparent we get wide awake on the spot, and do our best to repair the car. So we find ourselves now. The old bus seems to hit all the ditches. There is rough ground on all sides and none of us is able to do anything toward improvement. A state of pessimism stares us in the face, and there is sufficient cause for it. With lead at 3.75 cents, copper about 8 cents, zinc under 4 cents, -and silver about 26 cents, one has a reason for grief. When we think of the 5000 or less men employed in Utah mines and smelters in 1931, as compared with about 12,000 in 1929, the calamity seems even worse. In view of the present economic crisis we cannot even think of new men getting a job.

The interest in spark plasma sintering has been growing considerable over the past few years. This has been brought about by the unique advantages of the process, which include reduced sintering temperatures and times and the production of materials with unique microstructures and properties. Despite its current reputation as an outstanding process that has solved major problems such as nano-powder consolidation, it has so far been largely limited to the manufacture of simple shapes, due to its inherent geometric configuration. In this paper we present preliminary results on spark plasma "extrusion" that can allow the production of extended geometries via electric-current processing. Preliminary results on the processing and microstructure of spark plasma extruded aluminum are discussed.

The business of mineral exploration and development has become much more than simply a problem of locating orebodies and designing mines. Favorable economic analysis of mining and processing feasibility is no longer sufficient to justify the development of a mine. New laws, enacted by virtually every level of government, require comprehensive land use planning, environmental analysis, mineland reclamation, mine safety studies, and many other considerations. This profusion of new laws says in effect, that the mining company is no longer responsible only to its stockholders. Mineral development today can be compared to a partnership. As in all partnerships, the risks and liabilities as well as the benefits are held jointly by all the participants. In addition to the mining operator, this partnership consists of the public, through its many levels of government, interest groups, and individual citizens. Therefore, you'd better know your partner very well - his responsibilities and capabilities. Mining is considered a high risk venture. The risk on the part of the operator and the lending institutions has long been recognized. The risk that the public and its government take in these mining ventures has now been recognized also. The people and their government have learned that they inherit, through abandonment or forfeiture, the mistakes and problems of individuals and companies regarding these natural resources. In looking through the "Mining Engineering Handbook" recently published by the Society of Mining Engineers, I noted that in their discussion of liability for excavations, the authors quoted from the book of Exodus, 20th chap., where Moses said to his people: "When a man leaves a pit open, or when a man digs a pit and does not cover it, and an ox or an ass falls into it, the owner of the pit shall make it good; he shall give money to its owner, and the dead beast

Mineral hydration is known to result in low flotation recoveries and grades within primary platinum group element ores worldwide. This is because the phyllosilicate minerals derived from hydration reactions of silicate minerals (i) form electrostatic coatings on valuable minerals that in turn hinder collector adsorption, (ii) alter the viscosity of the slurry leading to poor gas dispersion and (iii) decrease the concentrate grade due to naturally-floating gangue. Sodium silicate was investigated because its dispersant, rheology modifying, and depressant properties could prove promising in combating the problems associated with these ore types. Quantitative evaluation by scanning electron microscopy analysis revealed large quantities of serpentine and talc present within the ore sample used in this study, which led to a poor flotation response as indicated by batch flotation tests. Using sodium silicate improved the recoveries and grades at high dosages (>1000 g/t). The zeta potential experiments indicate that improved recoveries are, in part, as a result of the reversal of serpentine surface charge, creating electrostatic repulsion between serpentine and valuable minerals which prevents the coating of valuable minerals by serpentine slimes. Ore dilution and rheology tests indicated that decreased viscosity at high dosages also improved recoveries. Talc micro-flotation tests revealed that the depression of talc occurred at higher sodium silicate dosages, which improved concentrate grade. The processing of nearsurface altered ores is becoming an increasing problem worldwide and the use of sodium silicate proved valuable in mitigating the problems associated with the altered ore investigated in this study. "Most mineral processing plants have high water requirements for their operational activities. These plants often function in an environment where water is becoming increasingly scarce. An increase in population will result in an increased demand for water; potentially beyond the limits of supply and hence increased competition for the resource. In South Africa, Gauteng and the North West Province are likely to be first to experience a shortage of potable water.In order to avoid a water crisis, efforts must be made to ensure the effective management of water resources and the minimisation of wastage. Hydrometallurgical plants have a responsibility to society and the environment to operate in a sustainable manner - reducing their water requirements will certainly assist towards developing a sustainable footprint.This project improved site water management by: surveying the potable water and storm water systems with a view to assessing the current water accountability and determining methods to improve accountability determining the monthly and yearly water balance for the site and presenting it in the form of a water balance sheet drawing up an input-output and operational model in accordance with the Minerals Council of AustraliaÆs æWater Accounting Framework for the Minerals IndustryÆ calculating the water footprints of the refinery identifying ways in which water savings could be achieved recommending management systems for water usage monitoring.This work was conducted in South Africa. As part of the mine permitting process as delegated by the Surface Mining Reclamation and Control Act of 1977 the regulatory authority must assess the probable hydrologic consequences and cumulative hydrologic impacts of surf ace mining. The U.S. Office of Surface Mining (OSM), in conjunction with Energy & Minerals Technology Assessment and ENCORE Systems Inc., has developed a user friendly groundwater model that is capable of predicting the effects of surface mining on groundwater quality and quantity. The model is a variation of the Prickett-Lonnquist model which has been modified to be specifically applicable to surface mine applications. This model is presently being used by OSM, the states, and industry to determine mining impacts on groundwater resources. The model is designed for use by the hydrologist with minimal computer training. The model accounts for multiple pumping wells, injection wells, multiple mine pits, and mine pit movement through time. This paper presents an example of how the model may be used in permit application review and how the model can be used by industry to simplify permit preparation.

"The history of the development and application of controlled recirculation systems in U.K. collieries is traced and the theory behind such systems briefly examined. Specific applications for dealing with dust and dust/heat problems in headings, for which practical experience is currently available, are described. Consideration is given to the special features which these systems introduce in the underground situation and to the essential safeguards which are required for their safe use.IntroductionRecirculation of air is a commonly used technique in genera l ventilation and air conditioning practice, but has always been regarded with some suspicion for mining applications. This is perfectly understandable in view o f the hazardous conditions which can occur with dangerous forms of recirculation in mines. However, certain controlled recirculation techniques can offer advantages, particularly in the field s of dust and climate control in headings, provided that they are designed, Installed an d managed with full comprehension o f all aspects of the system and always bearing in mind that from the point of view of serious firedamp ignition risk, headings are potentially the most hazardous places in coal mines.BackgroundProbably the first recorded use of deliberate recirculation in British collieries was reported by Lawton in 1933. This researcher described trials, undertaken under the auspices of a national committee on ""The Control of Atmospheric Conditions in Hot and Deep Mines"", involving attempts to increase the velocity, and thereby the cooling power on hot faces, by means of simple recirculation systems using fans and ducts delivering recirculated air in the opposite direction to the normal face airflow. No significant cooling advantage was obtained and there is no subsequent record of this work being continued. During the discussion on this paper, there was considerable disbelief that fire damp percentages had not increased significantly when air was recirculated, but apparently no attempt was made to establish why this should be. It is of interest to note that J. Ivon Graham, one of the contributors, recommended that recirculation should be tried in stone headings for the control o f dust, as he believed that ""there may be scope for recirculation and filtration of the air under certain circumstances in such headings"". This idea was not developed for another forty years."

PLANS for development of the San Manuel ore- body have been worked out and are progressing parallel with construction of the surface plant. This property lies in the Old Hat mining district, Pinal County, Ariz., about a mile south of Tiger where the St. Anthony mine once produced gold, molybdenum, vanadidn, lead, and zinc. Two development shafts have been completed and serve as ingress for preparation of the 1475 haulage level and 1415 grizzly level. Three other shafts are being put down. The Nos. 3A and 3B shafts will provide the ore hoisting facilities. The No. 4 shaft, now being sunk, will be at the main mine service and supply yard, with primary function to provide the mine with supplies.

Así también se adelanta el cumplimiento de algunos de ellos considerados como prioritarios para la población, ya que los compromisos están asignados para diferentes etapas de la mina (preconstrucción, construcción, operación y cierre).

A project to develop the Zinclor electrowinning cell to industrial size is being conducted at Tecnicas Reunidas' Research and Development Centre with Spanish Ministry of Industry support. This project is the final development phase in zinc electrowinning from a chloride medium, the highest ZINCLOR technology development level prior to the industrial scale having already been reached. This paper covers the outcomes and conclusions corresponding to project Phases 1 and 2: Process Selection and Industrial Electrodes (1 m2) design and testing. The most important achievement reached is that there are presently available industrial cathodes and anodes for the Zinclor diaphragm cell giving an optimum response for zinc chloride electrowinning with unit power consumptions between 2.65 and 2.80 kWh/kg Zn, depending on the diaphragm type. Standard electrolysis conditions were: 65 g/L ZnC12, 3 g/L HCl, 160 g/L NaCl, 350 g/t Zn arabig gum as the addition agent, 36¦C, and 400 A/m2 current density. The selection of electrodes, diaphragms and organic additives for the industrial scale tests have been optimised. The complete electrowinning cell development, with electrodes having an active area of I m2, enables the evaluation of Zinclor Technology application for industrial processes.

One of the most attractive features of electron beam curing as a process for manufacturing composite structures is the potential for attaining very low levels of residual stress as compared to thermal curing. This residual stress reduction is important both for the potential to reduce composite failure strains at low operating temperatures and the associated reduction in process-induced deformation. Previous work has demonstrated that it is possible in some cases to significantly reduce residual stress development during irradiation and also avoid development of additional residual stress during post cure. In this paper, simple L-shaped composite laminates were used to study the development of residual stress and deformation during thermal post-cure of specimens that were already partially cured using different radiation doses. Following post-cure, these specimens were also subjected to high-temperature loads to study creep behaviour under service conditions. Aerospace
