(Pittsburg Meeting, March, 1910.) AT the Pittsburg meeting of the Institute, May, 1879, I made the first announcement in America of the results obtained by Sidney Gilchrist Thomas and Percy C. Gilchrist, ill their efforts to eliminate phosphorus in the manufacture of steel in the Bessemer converter and the open-hearth furnace.1 The first published statement in an American newspaper was a reprint of the first Thomas-Gilchrist paper, 2 which I sent to J. C. Bayles, at that time the editor. At the suggestion of many friends who were present at the Pittsburg meeting, and others who are cognizant of the beginnings of the process in the United States, and for the information of the younger generation of the iron and steel fraternity, I have thought it eminently proper that the history of the process in detail should be given where I made the first announcement and where the process has had its largest development. During my residence in England, from April, 1873, to February, 1879, and as a member of the Iron and Steel Institute since 1874, I was present at many of its meetings during those years. At nearly -every meeting the burden of discussion was the question of the use of pig-iron containing phosphorus in the. manufacture of steel by the Bessemer or the open-hearth process. In my biographical notice of Thomas;3 read at the New York meeting of, the Institute, February, 1885, I show that the working-out of the process was not a hap-hazard or accidental inspiration, but the culmination of many years of investigation of experiments and theories which had been carried on and advanced by chemists and metallurgists at home and abroad. 1 Trans., viii., .5 (1879-80). 2 The Iron Age, vol. 22, No. 17, p. 3 (Oct. 24, 1878). 3 Trans.. xiii., 785 to 791.

"We optimize continuous quench process parameters to produce a desired precipitate distribution in aluminum alloy extrudates. To perform this task, an optimization problem is defined and solved using a standard nonlinear programming algorithm. Ingredients of this algorithm include a cost function, constraint functions and their sensitivities with respect to the process parameters. These functions are dependent on the temperature and precipitate size which are obtained by balancing energy to determine the temperature distribution and by using a reaction-rate theory to determine a discrete precipitate particle size distribution. Both the temperature and the precipitate models are solved via the finite element method. Since we use a discrete particle size model, there are as many as 105 degrees-of-freedom per finite element node. After we compute the temperature and precipitate size distributions, we must also compute their sensitivities. This seemingly intractable computational task is resolved by using an element-by-element discontinuous Galerkin finite element formulation and a direct differentiation sensitivity analysis which allows us to perform all of the computations on a PC.1 IntroductionThis work addresses the need for an integrated design capability that links microstructure evolution to the process parameters. It is motivated by the manufacture of lightweight aluminum-alloy extrusions for use in automotive structures. Aluminum alloys offer obvious benefits, however, care must be taken to manufacture favorable microstructures that ensure acceptable structural performance. For example, the manufacturing process for 6000-series components involves hot extrusion of cast aluminum billets followed by either an air or water quench process. The bill~t's initial grain structure is dramatically altered during extrusion by massive mechanical deformations and recrystallization processes. The microstructure continues to evolve during the quench, as complex chemical processes determine the formation of precipitates. The control of the precipit'ate size distribution is vital. Indeed, large precipitates located on grain boundaries serve as crack initiation sites which adversely effect structural crash· worthiness."

The mine and treatment plant of the Teziutlan, unit of the Mexican Corporation, S. A., are located at Aire Libre, in the District of Teziutlan, near the northwest edge of the State of Pueblo, Republic of Mexico. The property is leased from the Teziutlan Copper Co. The town of Teziutlan is the terminus of a branch railroad starting from Oriental Junction or the Mexico-Jalapa-Veracruz narrow-gage system of the National Railways of Mexico. A branch line 18 km in length from Teziutlan to Aire Libre belongs to the Teziutlan Copper Co. and is leased and operated in conjunction with the mine.

The mining and mineral concentration of Cu-Ni-PGM sulfide ores in South Africa occurs in semiarid regions. The scarcity and availability of water resources in these regions has become one of the biggest challenges facing mineral concentrators.S Owing to this challenge, concentrators have to find ways through which they can manage and control their water usage. Recycling and re-use of process water in mineral concentrators has therefore become common practice. This practice is beneficial in that it reduces reliance on municipal water, harnesses compliance to stringent environmental regulations on water usage, and it also offers a better response to the Sustainable Development Goals. This could however be somewhat concerning to the operator as recirculated water often has higher concentrations of ions compared to fresh or potable water. The unintended change in the process water quality may potentially affect critical aspects of flotation such as the stability of the froth. This has led to the need to find those process water ions that have the greatest impact on froth stability. Thus, this paper investigates the effect of various ions common in process water of a typical Cu-Ni-PGM concentrator on froth stability. Bubble size, water recoveries, foam height, and dynamic froth stability in both twophase and three-phase flotation systems are used as proxies for froth stability. Findings of this study are deemed crucial towards the development of a process water management protocol in sulfidic Cu-Ni- PGM ore concentrators. Separation of minerals by shape has received little attention, since minerals normally do not break into different shapes during crushing and grinding. However, comminution of consumer wastes generates opportunities for novel separations based on particle shape. For instance, ductile plastics are broken into longer curved shapes, whereas brittle plastics yield angular particles. Using spouting beds for particle separation in water requires controlling the spout's instability. The preferred geometry for such redesigned spouting beds is reported. Plastic cylinders, discs and spheres were separated as a function of rising water velocity and amount of particles in the system. By using 5 mm particles, differences in settling behavior could be video recorded.

The Ispat Mexicana SA de CV (IMEXSA) pelletising plant is located at Lazaro Cardenas on the west coast of Mexico. It is the primary source of feed stock for the adjacent direct reduction (DR) plants and steelmaking facilities. The initial design of the pellet plant began in 1981 for 3 Mtpa of DR grade pellets using local concentrate received by pipeline.' Several construction delays, an ownership change, and a decision to use imported concentrates delivered in 60 000 to 90 000 tonnes ship cargoes required flowsheet modifications and additions. The design concepts are described for the plant which includes concentrate regrind to final pelletising particle size.

The particle dispersion phenomena in a turbulent gas jet of the flash smelting process has been investigated. The particle number density in a non- reacting jet was measured experimentally by taking photographs of the particles in flight and counting them using the image analysis. Numerical computations were also performed using a mathematical model for a turbulent particle laden gas jet The experimental particle number density data were then compared with the predicted results of the model. Good agreement was obtained between the experimental and predicted data. The effects of the parameters such as the injector design, particle loading and air flow rate are discussed. Optimization of the concentrate burner design can be achieved with the help of experimental and theoretical simulation as performed in this work.

"The conversion of a concentrator from one grinding media type to another is a major undertaking in terms of both financial and technical risk. So, a strategy of completing sufficient laboratory and field tests to mitigate this risk, and give the operation confidence that advancing to plant trial will give a high probability for success.The objectives of this paper are twofold: to provide the reader with a strategy for mitigating risk prior to undertaking a plant trial; and to provide a statistical basis for analysing plant trial data. That is, when employing an electrochemically inert grinding media in the primary grinding circuit it is possible to change the pulp chemistry of the system and improve the metallurgical response of the ore.This paper tracks the changes in pulp chemistry and metallurgical performance of Rosh Pinah Zinc Corporation’s silver/lead/zinc concentrator as the primary ball mill was converted from forged steel grinding media to high chrome grinding media. The changed in metallurgical performance are correlated to the shift in pulp chemistry.INTRODUCTIONTheoryBruckard et al (2011) recently published an article describe the effect of the grinding environment on the flotation of copper sulphides. While this paper confined its discussion to copper sulphides the arguments presented apply equally to other sulphide mineral systems. Broadly, these studies indicate that most sulphide minerals are more noble than the grinding media used during comminution. Therefore, the sulphide minerals are cathodic with respect to the forged steel grinding media, and the following reactions apply:Cathode (sulphide mineral): ½O2 + H2O + 2e- ? 2OH- (1)Anode (grinding media): Fe ? Fe2+ + 2e- (2)A galvanic couple between the grinding media and the sulphide mineral(s) exists, which increases the corrosion rate of the forged steel media. The corrosion products of the grinding media, iron oxy-hydroxide species, invariably precipitate on to the surfaces of the sulphide minerals thereby affecting their floatability (Johnson, 2002).The application of more electrochemically inert grinding media to “real” ore systems at an industrial level to improve metallurgical performance has not gained universal acceptance. The aim of this paper is to provide a protocol for conducting laboratory and plant test work that clearly demonstrate that metallurgical benefits are not only possible, but measureable, by way of example. In this case, the work conducted at Rosh Pinah Zinc Corporation in Namibia is described."

This paper provides an overview of some of the key issues in design of smelter gas handling systems, with particular reference to smelter smelting plants. In both primary smelting and converting, gas handling and treatment systems often represent the major capital cost component. There is also ample evidence that poor system design can be a major cause of smelter down time, lost production and unforeseen high maintenance costs. The paper discusses these issues and offers guidance for improved design.

Double roasting of sinter carrying a high percentage of lead concentrates, gave rise to the problem of removing the sheets of metallic lead formed in the wind boxes. The solution of the problem has been found in the water sealed wind boxes. The metallic lead is granulated and can be removed without seriously interfering with the operation of the machine and eliminates necessity of men going in wind boxes with air guns. THE practice of double sintering the charge for lead blast furnaces, which is now standard throughout the lead smelting industry, has introduced the rather difficult problem of cleaning the wind boxes on sintering machines used for the final pass. Two factors have more recently accentuated this problem: (1) the growing demand of workmen for better working conditions and less arduous labor, and (2) the growing dearth of crude lead ores and the improved grade of lead concentrates demand a charge carrying the maximum percentage of lead. One to 2 pct of such high lead charges (30 to 40) when processed on machines in reasonably good condition will pass through the grates and report in the wind boxes. One-half to three-quarters of this material will be metallic lead reduced by the coke breeze or other fuel mixed with the charge. This lead forms large cakes or chunks which are hard to remove and which substantially increase the time the machine is out of operation for cleaning the wind boxes. A high lead fall can reduce the operating time 30 pct. As a specific example, a 30 ft machine having 63 in. pallets, and equipped with three conventional wind boxes, requires 3 to 4 hr per day for removing the accumulation in the wind boxes when operated as a final pass machine. This same machine when operated on raw charge requires less than an hour per day for cleaning. To eliminate formation of large chunks of lead in the wind boxes of the final pass machines and time lost in cleaning the boxes, R. C. Rutherford of the Chihuahua smelter of the American Smelting and Refining Co., devised and patented* a wind box having a water bath to granulate the lead as it falls from the grate bars. Later, C. H. Harris of the San Luis plant made and patentedt an improvement on Rutherford's device in which the water bath seals the wind box in a manner permitting the latter to be readily cleaned without destroying the vacuum. The first machine to our knowledge to use the water bath box was at the Chihuahua plant along the lines of the Rutherford patent. In 1942, a machine was placed in operation at the El Paso plant which incorporated the features of both Rutherford and Harris. This machine is 40 ft long equipped with pallets 63 x 24 in., and having 4 wind boxes 10 ft 4 in. x 7 ft 2 in. x 51 ft 3 in. in size (fig. 1). "Steel making technology poses strong potentials for environmental protection in three direction. One is pollution control on steel making process itself. Japanese steel industry has cut down various type of emission drastically since 1970's. Secondary, those process technology can be applied to reduce environmental burden in other industrial sectors. One of the successful examples is municipal waste treatment facility. Thirdly, development of high performance steel products, such as high strength steel for automobile body, can contribute to improve environmental performance during their use, based on the concept of life cycle assessment. Some examples of the successful development and future task is discussed.IntroductionsStack and smoke used to be a symbol of energy intensive industry such as steel making. But, scenery of steel works and its surroundings have been completely changed, and steel products have been changing, as well. El objetivo del siguiente trabajo es señalar un método que permita la recuperación económica de metales preciosos como el oro, plata y otros metales básicos (tales como plomo y cobre) de sus respectivas menas naturales y de los concentrados o relaves que los contengan. Para ello, se utlizará dos formas de aplicación: La primera se da en el tratamiento por cianuración de las menas, donde el carbón mineral es el medio precipitante de los metales disueltos. Mientras que la segunda ocurre cuando el carbón ha sido separado de las pulpas cianuradas, conviertiéndose en un agente reductor de los metales de fundición. De forma tal que se logra una recuperación integral de los metales preciosos y básicos en las barras de fundición.

The valorization of alkaline waste materials from thermal processes utilizing intensified mineral carbonation routes is investigated. The principal advantages of this approach are the chemical stability and storage safety of mineral carbonates, the opportunities for process integration presented by the technology, and the potential for conversion of low-value materials into useful products. Treatment and disposal of steel slags are a costly burden on steel plants. Sustainable solutions for Argon Oxygen Decarbonisation (AOD) and Continuous Casting (CC) stainless steel slags and Basic Oxygen Furnace (BOF) steel slag are desired. An integrated on-site mineral carbonation approach is envisaged as a favourable solution.

MULTIFLUX, a new thermal, hydrologic, and airflow model and software is being developed to solve the flow of heat, moisture, and air in and around an underground opening. MULTIFLUX couples two distinct domains that are solved separately first and re-coupled as an iterative task: (1) the rockmass, and (2) the airway. The airway is solved with a lumped-parameter Computational Fluid Dynamic (CFD) module which is an embedded part of the MULTIFLUX code. The CFD model includes convection, conduction, and radiation for heat, as well as convection and diffusion for moisture transport in an air-filled opening. The CFD model also solves for the airflow field. The surrounding rockmass model may be from any analytical solution, or from a complex thermal-hydrologic numerical model such as NUFT or TOUGH2. The rockmass model is interfaced to MULTIFLUX using a novel technique called Numerical Transport Code Functionalization (NTCF). The method provides fast convergence on a personal computer platform. The paper reports the results of MULTIFLUX simulations for a mine drift, comparing calculations with a known mine climate software, CLIMSIM, and with measured data. Through this validation example, the performance of MULTIFLUX is demonstrated. The results show excellent agreement due to the use of realistic modeling assumptions and boundary conditions.

A procedure was developed for the separation of lead and sulfur in industrial concentrates of galena by a combination of chlorination and fused - salt electrolysis . Galena could not be satisfactorily electrolyzed in the various media tried ; however , when it was treated with chlorine the resulting lead chloride could be effectively separated electrically into lead and chlorine . An apparatus was designed and constructed to chlorinate galena and to volatilize simultaneously most of the chloridized impurities . By electrolyzing the chlorinated concentrate , a high percentage of lead was recovered . Anodic chlorine was drawn from the cell and was used to chlorinate new feed . In many runs , the recovered metal analyzed from 99.8 to 99.9 percent lead . Lead was also distributed as a chloride in the bath , and a small portion was in the volatile fraction produced during the chlorination step . During a tinuous operation , only 0.1 percent of the total lead was discarded ; 99.9 percent was accounted for in the metal , electrolytic bath , and washed or leached chlorination condensate which was essentially lead chloride . About 95 percent of the sulfur from the galena was recovered as a byproduct of over 90 - percent grade .

This paper considers the integration of uncertain real-time logistics data for reactive construction scheduling. In order to manage a construction project efficiently, an accurate schedule representing the current project progress is inevitable. The quality and up-to-dateness of such a schedule depends on the availability of real-time data. Typically, real-time logistics data contain information about the availability of material, equipment and personnel as well as delivery dates and site conditions. The accuracy and inherent uncertainty depends on the location where the real-time data was acquired. Currently, the integration of such data into a construction schedule is a very time-consuming, manual and, thus, errorprone process. Therefore, this paper proposes a methodology that enables an automatic integration of such uncertain data into construction schedules. By integrating uncertainties into the existing schedule their impacts on the construction work can be evaluated. For this, discrete event simulation is applied. In order to model uncertain input parameters for simulation models this methodology applies the fuzzy sets theory. In combination with alpha-cut sampling technique, discrete model input parameters are obtained. By applying reactive scheduling with several discrete event simulation experiments, the results can be used to modify construction schedules according to agreed timeframes and costs. In order to demonstrate and validate the presented approach an example is conducted.

This work describes characterization of the performance of the tundish of a six strand continuous casting unit of the Companhia Siderurgica Belgo Mineira, Joao Monlevade, Brazil using physical modeling. Permanent and transient conditions, due to ladle metal composition changes are considered. Pulse and step tracer addition techniques are employed to assess the control variables. For transient conditions the degree of inter-mixing and the minimum residence time are determined with a view to optimize the process especially during the grade changes of steel.
