This Bureau of Mines report summarizes the design and tests of a gage that will simultaneously measure the deformation of a borehole along three diameters 60 degrees apart; the measurements are in a single plane normal to the axis of the borehole. The inherent errors in measurement are considered together with the problems associated with the use of the gage in the relatively severe environments in and around mine openings. These problems were treated in the design and tests of the gage and the results establish that the gage can be used to satisfactorily is determine estimates of the stresses in rock.

Water sprays on mining machines are generally put there to reduce dust; however, research by the Bureau of Mines and others has shown that considerable airflows may also be generated by these sprays. This recognition of water spray-gen- erated air movement led to the "Spray-Fan" - a continuous miner auxiliary ventilation system which was shown to reduce methane peaks by a factor of 15. Recent successes and failures of the Spray Fan are reviewed. More recently, the same principles were used in the design of the "Shearer- Clearer" for reducing dust at longwall shearer operators. The original design was successful; however, a new design is now available which is more practical to install and does a much better job of holding the dust against the face downwind of the shearer. The latest research objective is to eliminate the negative impact of spray- generated air turbulence on continuous miner dust control. Most coal faces in the USA are ventilated in the exhaust mode using "line curtain", and the forward airflow on the side of the heading opposite the curtain is inevitably weak. Air turbulence generated by sprays which are incorrectly located and/or operated at excessive pressures can cause roll back - in which the dust cloud at the face is forced unwind against the ventilation and spreads over the miner cnerator. The general approach to reducing "roll back." is reviewed and art anti-roll back water spray system is presented.

The glass cutting industry is responsible for generating large quantities of waste, during the stages of cutting and polishing. The disposal of this material generates a cost to the company, thus looking for ways to repackage it, so there is the possibility of incorporating it into the adhesive mortar. The objective of this work is the characterization of waste and assessment of the properties of these mortars, fresh, and check the possibility of their use. As for the characterization, were carried out particle size testing, density and pozzolanic activity, for the fresh state were performed tests of air content, water retention consistency and entrained particular index. Were incorporated 0,10, 15 and 20% of the amount of sand. The results showed that the material on display ha spotential for use in adhesive mortar, with values within the limits stipulated by Brazilian standards.

Blister copper from converting of copper matte is processed by fire refining prior to electrorefining. The fire refining consists of two steps: copper oxidation with impurities slagging and copper reduction. The classical batch process is carried out in vascular or reverberatory furnaces called anode furnaces. A new process for continuous copper fire refining has been proposed. The copper flows through two reactors in cascade, where is oxidized and reduced. The flow of a liquid copper through a ceramic packed bed increases the surface area and the rate of oxidation as well as the rate of reduction in the packed bed of charcoal. Mathematical modelling allowed for the design of a laboratory scale demonstration installation and industrial-pilot installation in Hernan Videla Lira Smelter (Paipote). The results have demonstrated the process feasibility and flexibility in operation.

"Several industrial and government laboratories are of the opinion that solar--cell technology will grow into a billion-dollar industry by the year 2000, especially if oil prices rise again. Of the variety of materials that have been investigated as the major component of photovoltaic systems, silicon appears to have an outstanding advantage. The cost factor is the primary importance in photovoltaic development, since the technology to make silicon cells of acceptable efficiency and life time has existed since the early stage of the space program. Electrometallurgy is one of the low--cost processes for the production of silicon, since it allows direct, single-stage production from some abundant, inexpensive source materials such as silica and fluorosilicates. Among several systems, two are given particular attention, using inorganic baths with Si0 2 or K2SiF6 as the source of silicon respectively. They appear capable of development to commercial production. Conceptual designs of a commercial--scale cell for silicon production at temperatures above its melting point, and of a pilot' plant for plating silicon from an all-fluoride bath are presented. Energy ProspectsThe major changes in the world energy since the first energy crisis in 1970 have impacted on our community. When oil was $40 a barrel in the mid-1970s, we became obsessed with the energy conservation and a search for alternate energies. Even though the crude oil fell below $15 a barrel during the last several years, our energy security fears continue to haunt us. This time it is not the scarcity, but the abundance of foreign oil and the decline in the domestic production.The prospects of energy depends on the demand and supply of energy. These, in turn, depend on future energy prices, which are linked to economic factors, political events, and unforeseen circumstances. Although no one can predict the future with certainty, three energy consumption patterns used by the Ford Foundation are as shown in Fig. 1."

Coal mine bounces and bursts are major problems facing U.S. mine operators. Bounces and bursts have the potential to inflict severe injury on mining personnel, damage equipment, and cause mine closures. High- stress conditions, at or near the working face, are the common denominator in the burst problem, If mine operators can locate high-stress and potentially burst-prone zones, they can then use stress-relief methods to control the burst condition. One method of locating the high-stress zone is the probe-hole-drilling or drilling-yield method. Probe-hole drilling is used frequently in Europe, the U.S.S.R., and Japan as a means for locating potential burst zones. Consequently, the Bureau of Nines performed tests in the laboratory and in a deep, burst-prone western mine to analyze probe-hole drilling. The in-mine method, very simply, involves drilling a hole into the coal seam and measuring the volume of cuttings obtained. A certain volume of cuttings can be expected from a certain diameter and length drill hole. A significant increase in the volume of cuttings means the zone around that particular hole is highly stressed. In-mine use of the drilling yield method has shown it to be a useful tool for locating highly stressed and potential burst zones. Results from laboratory testing confirm that high stress applied tri-axially to a cube specimen will cause a significant increase in the volume of cuttings from a small-diameter drill hole in the specimen.

AT THE Belmont mill, the pregnant solution is de¬livered to a 30 by 10-ft. tank, from which it is pumped to three Merrill clarifying presses of the sluice-bar type, whence it flows through the meter to the precipitation supply tank. ?The solution for precipitation is pumped by a 10 by 10-in. Aldrich triplex pump and delivered through a 6-in. line to the forty-eight triangular frame Merrill presses at the head of the mill. Zinc dust is fed in at the pump suction and the solution precipitated to 0.01 to 0.02 oz. silver. The solution flowing from the presses is tested at 1-hr. intervals with sodium sulfide. All solution is precipitated to the same value; 4J tons of solution are precipitated for each ton of ore treated and the presses are cleaned every 15 days. The product from the presses' is dumped into steel cars having steam-jacketed bottoms, in which they are dried until the moisture content is between 15 and 17 per cent. when 8. per cent. of soda and .3 per cent. of borax are added and the contents thoroughly mixed. In the case of special clean-ups, the precipitate is tested and the flux is added to meet the requirements.

"Recognising that the mining industry is wedded to the break-even cut-off grade rather than a cut-off grade that optimises value, the author examines some perils and pitfalls in the use of break-even grades that lead to what the author calls ‘negatively geared ore reserves’.Negatively geared ore reserves occur when a portion of the ore reserves actually has a negative value and is effectively being subsidised by the more profitable portion of the ore reserves. This situation is generally difficult to detect with the level of information available to the public investor. The ore reserves can still be quite profitable in total, but now possess a level of risk that may not be appreciated.The risk profile (financial risk) of a negatively geared ore reserve is far greater than for a non-negatively geared ore reserve. Like a negatively geared investment property in a falling property market (for readers familiar with the Australian tax minimisation investment strategy), when the price of a commodity falls, a company that possesses a negatively geared ore reserve loses value at a magnified rate relative to a company that has a neutral or positively geared ore reserve. In the extreme case of a major commodity price reduction, as happened with the gold price in mid-2013, the negatively geared ore reserve can easily become negative value in total, not just in part.The negatively geared ore reserve is sometimes intentional – for instance in order to increase published ore reserve tonnages and meet the CEO’s key performance indicators – but is also often unintentional, resulting from various errors in the break-even calculation. Common errors in calculating a break-even grade include using fixed metallurgical recoveries, not including allowances for ideal laboratory versus real plant results, ignoring available operational data and using modal rather than mean parameter values in cost and performance calculations.This paper examines a common value distribution profile in many ore reserves and the effect of common break-even grade errors on this profile.CITATION:Poniewierski, J, 2016. "A comparative study of the intensities of the IR modes in the pjlotoacoustic and. FrIR spectroscopy of amorphous and crystalline SiO2 particles is presented. It is observed that in photoacoustic spectroscopy of amorphous SiO2, IR modes of surface species are enhanced by over an order of magnitude compared to the bulk IR modes of SiO2. This effect, though not yet understood, may find applications in surface science.Since the publication of the Rosencwaig-Gersho theory of the photoacoustic effect in solids in 1976 [1], a great deal of attention has been paid to the development .of photoacoustic spectroscopy (PAS) into an analytical technique for condensed matter studies, especially when combined with the modern Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectrometer [2-8]. PAS has now been applied to a variety of experimental situations [2, 3] and it is particularly suitable for opaque powders and for cases where ~ample preparation (e.g. mixing with KBr as is usually done in FTIR spectroscopy) is not desirable. Another area of interest is the depth profiling feature of PAS, which is studied by varying the modulation frequency of the incident radiation [2-8]. The one-dimensional Rosencwaig-Gersho theory for non-porous samples has been extended to other cases [9-12]. Recently it has become known [11, 12] that for porous samples with porosity the IR modes are enhanced by a factor proportional toe. This enhancement is due to the pressure wave set up in the interstitial gas in the porous sample and this enhancement has been reported by a number of groups [12-14].In this Letter we report the observation of anomalously large enhancement of the PAS signal for certain surface IR modes on the surface of amorphous silica particles. This observation differs from the previous reports in that certain surface modes are enhanced by over an order of magnitude compared to the bulk IR modes. Although the reasons for this enhancement of the surface IR modes in PAS are not understood at present, this observation may open up new approaches to the study of surfaces. Results of these initial observations are given in this Letter. ·Experimental studies reported here were carried out on an FTIR spectrometer (Mattson Instruments, Model Cygnus 100) equipped with an MCT detector. The same instrument was used for PAS studies in conjunction with an MTEC (Model 100) PA cell. The sample cell and the spectrometer are continuously flushed with dry, CO2 free air obtained by the use of Balston Instruments Air Dryer Filter System (Model 75-60). Usually data were collected for 32 scans at 4 cm-I resolution, although both scan and resolution can be varied. For FTIR studies, samples were mixed with IR-grade KBr and pelletised. For PAS, no sample preparation is necessary and data are ratioed against dry carbon black [4, 5]."

INVESTIGATIONS by the Bureau of Mines of deposits containing strategic minerals were authorized by what has become known as the Strategic Materials Act (Public No. 117, 76th Congress, Chapter 190. 1st Session). A later act providing an appropriation for the first of four years through which the investigations are to be conducted was signed on Aug. 9, 1939. No time has since been lost as seven field projects already are being vigorously prosecuted, and two others no doubt soon will be in course of execution. Project engineers were at their stations within two days after funds had been made available. Crews have been hired; equipment and supplies have been purchased; 5 bids for diamond drilling have been obtained and the drilling has started base camps have been established: ground has been cleared; and several thousand feet of trenching, test-pitting, and sampling have already been done. At the Reno Experiment Station of the Bureau, a special metallurgical laboratory has been provided to make assays, analyses, and tests upon samples of ores from all projects under investigation.

India’s steel vision of 2030 requires a huge amount of quality iron ore. The utilization of low-grade iron ores such as banded iron ores will play an important role to achieve the same production. The absence of alumina impurities in the banded hematite jasper (BHJ) ore provides it an edge over other low-grade iron ores. The conventional beneficiation techniques such as magnetic separation and washing were found to be ineffective to produce suitable feed (Fe ~ 60%) for the blast furnace. It was found that microwave exposure provides significant enrichment to the low-grade iron ore and can be used as a pretreatment step in the beneficiation of similar low-grade iron ores. The above study reveals that hematite phase is susceptible to microwave exposure which enhances the separation of iron values from impurities. Under optimum conditions, an iron-enriched concentrate with 61% Fe, 85% Fe recovery at 50% yield can be achieved from BHJ feed ~ 38% Fe. The pretreatment process for BHJ beneficiation includes only microwave exposure without any chemical additive and may prove economical and industrially feasible.

Titanium aluminides recently replaced Ni-based superalloys as turbine blades in the last LP stage of aircraft engines. To extend their range of use at higher temperature their properties need to be improved, either by alloying or processing. An efficient solution is to reduce the grain size during the solidification process. In the first part of the paper, an overview is given on the possibilities for grain refinement of such alloys, based on literature data and new results. The most efficient grain refinement is obtained with boron addition which leads to boride formations that are detrimental for in-use properties of turbine blades. In this work, the use of the high grain refinement potency of inoculation with non-brittle particles has been used by developing new refractory-based inoculants. The effect of one of these inoculants on grain refinement of an as-cast structure in a Ti-46Al is presented; resulting in a reduction of the grain size by a factor of 3.While less efficient compared to the potency of boron containing alloys, the grain refinement is effective and does not introduce any embrittling particles.

"INTRODUCTION The accurate determination of the free silica index in coal mine dusts is an important requirement because severe health hazards are believed to be associated with the inhalation of respirable-sized silica particles.1-6 Free silica refers to the three polymorphs of silica (Si02)viz., quartz, cristobalite, and tridymite-although quartz is usually the dominant form in most mine dusts.6 The free silica index is the concentration in micrograms of free silica in air per m3 of air sampled corrected to standard conditions of 25°C and 760 mm/Hg, the present MSHA (Mine Safety and Health Administration) limit on time-averaged basis being 100 µ.g/m 3 for coal mines. A recent review7 has concluded that quartz, cristobalite, and tridymite particles impart nearly equal long-term hemolytic damage when compared on a per unit surface area basis.At present, two experimental methods-viz., transmission infrared spectroscopy (TIRS) and x-ray diffraction (XRD)-are commonly used for the determination of silica concentrations in mine dusts. In TIRS, which has been adopted by MSHA and is commonly called the P7 method, the silica absorption band near 800 cm - 1 is used for quantification. However the mineral kaolinite, which is commonly present in mine dusts, also has absorption band, albeit weaker, at 800 cm- 1• To correct for this interference, one uses the stronger 915-cm -1 band of kaolinite to determine the concentration of kaolinite, and the kaolinite contribution to the absorbance at 800 cm-1 is then determined from a calibration curve, leading to the determination of silica by subtraction. In the XRD technique, usually an internal standard such as CaF 2 is used to determine the concentration of silica from line intensity measurements. XRD has the added advantage that concentrations of quartz, cristobalite, and tridymite can be determined.8•9 In an exhaustive study on the precision of the techniques ofTIRS and XRD for monitoring worker exposure,9 the conclusion has been reached that both methods measure silica within 253 of the ""true"" value 953 of the time in a single laboratory."

Sinter can constitute up to 80–85 per cent of the total ferrous burden in modern blast furnace ironmaking operations. The mineralogy and microstructure of iron ore sinter play an important role in determining its physical and metallurgical properties. As a result, characterisation of sinter phases is a cost-effective and complementary tool to conventional physical and metallurgical testing of iron ore sinter in evaluating and predicting sinter quality. Over the years, CSIRO has developed a scheme for characterising iron ore sinter that classifies primary sinter phases such as unreacted and partially reacted hematite and magnetite, and secondary phases, including prismatic high-temperature silico-ferrite of calcium and alumina (SFCA), microplaty SFCA (SFCA 1), dense SFCA, secondary hematite and magnetite, glass, larnite (dicalcium silicate; Ca2SiO4) and remnant fluxes. Quantification of these phases has traditionally been carried out by manual point counting under a petrographic microscope; however, new technologies based on automated optical image analysis, quantitative X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy are now available for evaluation. In this study, two sinter samples of varying chemistry were prepared and characterised using both point counting and automated optical image analysis. Introduction The purpose of this paper is to give a brief, general outline of mining practices at Torbrit Silver mine. The geology of the mine is touched on as it is felt that a rough picture of the geology will result in a clearer understanding of the mining methods employed. The main part of the paper deals with mining methods and a section is included on haulage. Development practice is mentioned only briefly. Torbrit Silver Mines, Limited, a subsidiary of Mining Corporation of Canada, is located in the Alice Arm area of northern British Columbia. Access to the mine is by boat to the village of Alice Arm at the head of Alice arm, then truck road, following the course of Kitsault river for 18 miles in a northerly direction to the plant site. The main portal is a further two-thirds of a mile along the course of the river, at approximately the same elevation as the plant, 1,014 feet above sea level. Geology The ore occurs in a massive, irregular-shaped quartz-barite body replacing a folded area in a series of volcanic breccias, tuffs, and flow rocks locally referred to as 'green-stones'. A series of parallel, nearly vertical, fine-grained basic dykes cut across the formation at right angles to the strike of the ore belt over a horizontal distance of 140 feet. The whole of the quartz-barite vein material, which ranges up to several hundred feet wide in places, carries silver values but commercial grade is confined to lenses and shoots where there have been more than usual concentrations of native silver and silver-bearing minerals. The ore-bearing structure plunges at approximately 25 degrees along an axis striking roughly N.65°W.

This study investigates the use of a horizontally-baffled column (7.6 cm inside diameter by 344.2 cm high) to reduce the ash content of a high ash bituminous coal. Tests were carried out to determine how the baffled column responded to changes in feed rate, reagent dosage, and feed quality, and to compare its performance with a conventional column installation in an operating plant. In this paper, the results of this investigation will be reviewed and discussed.

P&H MinePro Services Canada is supplying Syncrude Canada three more of its model4100BOSS electric mining shovels. The shovels will be delivered during 2003. Syncrude’s oil sands operations already use five P&H shovels. The first 4100BOSS shovel was commissioned at Syncrude’s operation in northern Alberta, Canada in October 2001. The unit loads more than 9 kt/hr (10,000 stph) of unblasted oil sands. Since it began operation, the 4100BOSS has shown a 28% production increase over the four P&H 4100TS shovels also on site.

When developing a detailed plan to incorporate all the complex activities involved in a surface lignite mine, many elements must be carefully evaluated as to the individual and cumulative effects on the end result. The following elements are generally evaluated when planning a surface lignite mine: ? Reserve evaluation, including lignite quality characterization; ? Delineation of mining parameters, including lignite recovery factors, geotechnical factors, land control factors; ? Selection of mining blocks; ? Pit sequencing; ? Reclamation, including soil reconstruction design and land use planning; ? Overburden handling design; ? Selection of equipment; ? Sizing of equipment; ? Manpower requirements; and ? Other elements, including contract negotiations and execution, financing, investment return, operation economics, permitting and scheduling.

The influence of solution treatment on the phase evolution and tensile properties of Ti-Mo alloys was investigated to assess their potential use in biomedical applications. Phase formation and microstructural evolution were studied using X-ray diffraction (XRD), optical microscopy (OM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD). The mechanical properties were characterized by means of tensile tests and bending strength. XRD analysis showed that solution treatment increased the volume fraction of β phase and supressed the α" phase. The microstructures of the as-cast alloys consisted of β equiaxed grains with sub-grain structures of different sizes, while the solution treated alloys comprised β equiaxed grains only except for Ti- 10.02Mo, which comprised needle-like α" structures. EBSD showed an increase in the volume fraction of the ω and α" phases in all the alloys after solution treatment. The elastic modulus and UTS of all the alloy significantly decreased after solution treatment, except for Ti-15.05Mo,whereas the elongation significantly increased. The fracture surfaces of all the alloys after solution treatment indicated more ductile behaviour than brittle
