AN analysis of the bituminous coal situation by an authority who traces the production, mining, safety, markets and labor trends in comparison with other fuels. BEFORE 1918 the production of coal experienced a steady growth, with slight recessions in ouput in only twelve years (1837, 1841, 1852, 1855, 1861, 1874, 1876, 1889, 1894, 1905, 1909, 1914), and in each of these cases the loss was recovered in the following year and the increase continued. In each decade the output was doubled. Prices, while not high, allowed some profit. In 1918 during World War I, an output of 580 million tons was reached and with the exception of 1923 this total was not again reached until 1942, in World War 11. Losses of output in this period were much greater than ever before; in 1932 the total was 270 million tons less than in 1918 or 1923, and the loss after 1923 was not recovered until 1942. The greatest output was 631 million tons in 1947.

THE MINERALS INDUSTRY has always been a heavy user of energy in most of its unit operations: power in the mining, comminution, flotation and electro-winning processes; fuel in its smelting and other metallurgical processes; and, of course, fuel in the on-site generation of power and steam. Many of the techniques for using computers to perform energy management and conservation tasks have been known for some time, but they have not been widely implemented because the return on investment has hitherto been insufficient. Recent trends, however, have not only caused the dollar return to rise due to higher purchased energy costs, but the cost of the investment to fall. One trend has been the generally lower cost of computer control systems themselves, due to vendors having adopted the newer, lower-cost and more reliable electronic component technologies now becoming universally available. The second trend is the development of low-cost, but high-speed, remote multiplexing devices, which have reduced considerably the expense of bringing data from points scattered over a wide area, which is typically the case when applying energy management systems to a minerals processing plant. By taking advantage of these and related developments, computer control systems can now have a rewarding impact on plant energy management and conservation practices, and recent advances in application technology have opened up new and additional opportunities for energy cost reduction and control.

(2) Conveyors in the mill section of the concentrator plant. (3) Conveyors handling concentrate from the filter plant to the bedding plant, and from this plant to the smelter. (4) Conveyors handling flux and custom ore in the smelter crushing plant and to the bin at the bedding plant.

"IntroductionThe evaporation losses of gasoline in the refinery, can be reduced by proper methods of refinery construction and operation. When gasoline evaporates slowly, as when stored in tanks that are not vapor tight, the most volatile part evaporates first, so that the remaining liquid in not only less in volume, but is also lower in quality. In some,evaporation changes the characteristics of the product so much that it must be reblended to meet trade specifications.Refiners are, therefore, greatly interested in the various appliances and methods used to reduce these losses. In the past this interest has been directed largely to storage tanks, probably because evaporation from tanks is more readily observed than losses during other refinery operations. As tests by the Bureau of Mines on evaporation of gasoline from small storage tanks had indicated that the losses during the various stages of refining might be equal to or greater than those of standing storage, a survey was during the spring and early summer months of 1924 in a large number of refineries in the Mid-Continent field. In order to enable the refiner to select the results of those tests that conform most nearly to the conditions that he has to meet, tests were conducted at various stages of refining, as follows: (1) Randown tanks, (2) (agitators), (3) filling tank cars, (4) storage of refined products, and (3) miscellaneous handling. The results are presented in this paper."

This paper discusses the selection of X- ray spectrographic instrumentation and describes a technique for accomplishing the low level determination of tantalum . An ion- exchange method of separating tantalum from columbium is also described .

The Table Mountain copper deposit is in an isolated portion of north-eastern Churchill County, Nev. Although copper-bearing outcrops have been known to exist in the area since 1909, no copper ore has been mined. Development of the property has been hampered by poor roads and rugged topography. Until 1941, the last 4 or 5 miles to the property had to be traveled either by foot or pack animal. As a part of the Bureau of Mines program of investigation and development of domestic mineral deposits, a project was started at the Table Mountain deposit. The Bureau began its field work on July 29, 1947, and completed it on October 18, 1948. Thirteen holes aggregating 2,711 linear feet, were drilled; samples were analyzed - 509 from cores and 143 from sludges. This report contains a brief history of the district and a description of the geology, deposits, and drilling done by the Bureau.

The knowledge-based expert systems (KBES) is a potentially powerful technique to the mining engineer in traditional areas of mine design and operations, as well as in the emerging areas of mining automation and robotics. Since KBES is still experimental in many respects, caution must be exercised as this "high tech" tool is developed and applied to mining. The objective of this paper is to demystify expert systems by introducing the elements of KBES, discussing the strengths and weaknesses, and identifying some areas of application in mining, based on the authors' experiences.

El presente texto señala la topografía, geología regional, estratigrafía, fisiografía, caracteres morfológicos, mineralógicos y genéticos, y la clasificación según su proceso de formación del yacimiento de la región Morococha. La topografía de esta región es variada y rica en cuanto formaciones geológicas se refiere, dado sus orígenes y edades respectivas. Su estratigrafía comprende una columna geológica, la cual está compuesta por rocas sedimentarias, y extrusivas que van desde el periodo Cuaternario hasta el Terciario. Las formaciones encontradas en la región son las filitas excelsior, volcánicas Catalina, formación Mitu, calizas Potosí, formación Santo Toribio-Buena Ventura, formación Machay, las capars rojas de Casapalca, la diorita de Anticona y monzonita cuarcífera de Morococha. Asimismo tiene dos sistemas de fallas: longitudinal y transversal. Las especies metalíferas de mayor abundancia son: la pirita, tenantita, tetrahedrita, chalcopirita, enargíta, blenda, magnetíta y galena. Mientras que las de menor abundancia son: estefanita, especularita, phrotita, marcasita y muy raramente: aíkenita; burnonita, cubanita, jamesonita, luzonita y molibdenita. Finalmente, entre las características estructurales de depósito tenemos: las vetas y los mantos, considerando entre los mantos algunos subtipos o variedades estructurales. También existe una tercera clase de estructura de depósitos minerales, que son lo que están constítuídos por varios depósitos agrupados en forma localizada y se conocen como el "0re -Clusters" o "Archipiélago".

A serious problem confronted the city of Gunnison early in 1958 in that, for a few months during each spring runoff, the water supply derived from the Gunnison River became polluted to an unsafe point. The city management had the choice of building a new filter plant to replace the old unworkable one or drilling wells to develop a ground water supply. The cost of a new filter plant was estimated at $180,000 compared to $50,000 for 6 wells, pumps, and additional water lines, hence their decision to attempt the development of sufficient ground water. Six wells at 300 gpm per well were estimated as necessary to handle the peak usage of 1800 gpm, compared to only 600 gpm winter usage. Although the water table is only about 7 feet below the surface, existing private wells drilled at random locations were producing much less than 300 gpm. The problem was to find sufficient quantities from about 6 wells. Since the presence of an ancient bedrock channel was suspected, which would be expected to localize greater quantities of water, the city of Gunnison authorized a resistivity survey to investigate bedrock topography below unconsolidated gravels. Survey results were highly satisfactory and led to the preparation of a fairly detailed bedrock contour map, Fig. 1. This map was used in selection of all well sites. The city of Gunnison is situated in a flat, broad, Quaternary gravel-filled valley (terrain dips south at 20 feet per mile) at the junction of the Gunnison River and Tomichi Creek. The valley, about 2-4 miles wide, is bordered by hills of Tertiary volcanics to the northwest, Cretaceous and Jurassic sediments to the north and northeast, and pre-Cambrian granite and gneiss to the south. One previous deep test well at the west end of the city hit pre-Cambrian granite at 496 feet, which, allowing for 40 feet of surface gravels, makes the older sedimentary section 456 feet thick. This section is probably all Jurassic Morrison formation, consisting of the Saltwash sandstone overlain by the much thicker section of Brushy Basin shales and mudstones. According to the driller's logs, each well was bottomed in what is believed to be Brushy Basin shale. FIELD PROCEDURE A standard Gish-Rooney type of resistivity apparatus was employed, which used 45-volt dry batteries as a direct-current power source. Applied voltages could be selected from 45 volts to a 270-volt maximum. Copper-coated steel stakes were employed as current electrodes and porous porcelain pots as potential electrodes to avoid possible polarization effects with direct current. The expanding Wenner electrode configuration was utilized for this investigation and measurements were made at 20 40, 60, 80, and 100-foot spacings,

"INTRODUCTION The Bureau of Mines, United States Department of the Interior, with the cooperation of the University of Alabama and coal producers of Alabama, is making a series of washability studies to obtain technically and commercially important data from the productive coal beds of the State. Based on the system followed in these studies, this report consists of screen-sizing and sink-and-float data on the America and Pratt beds at Gorgas, Ala.SAMPLING AT THE MINESAlthough operations were discontinued in 1929, the accessible openings of the old Gorgas mines of the Southeastern Fuel Co. made possible the taking of samples from the America bed at three openings and from the Pratt bed at two openings. A sample was taken from the America bed at the Klondyke opening; a second was taken about 1 rile south of the Klondyke at the Musgrove America opening, and a third sample was taken about 1-1/2 miles south of the Musgrove-America at the Cricket Lodge opening. A sample was taken from the Pratt bed at Musgrove-Pratt No. 1, which is about 3/4 mile east of Musgrove-America, and a second sample was taken at Musgrove-Pratt No. 2, which is about 3/4 mile west of Musgrove-America. The samples ranged in weight from 1/2 ton to 1 ton and were equivalent to approximately a 2-ton sample from each bed. Figure 1 shows sections of the beds at the places sampled.In addition to the samples for washability study, a seam sample for analysis was taken at each of the places sampled. So as to give a representative seam sample for each of the two beds, these samples were combined in the laboratory in proportion to the thickness of the bed at the places sampled."

"The interaction of amorphous 1ilica particles with several hydrogen bonding agents (H2O, C2H5OH, C7H2NO) was investigated by monitoring the changes in the bulk and surface IR vibrational modes of silica using photoacoustic spectroscopy. It is argued that the intensity of the silanol band at 3747 cm-1 provides (an inverse) quantitative measure of the interaction or surface groups, along with the shift in the broad hydroxyl band, the interaction following the order C7H2NO > C2H5OH > H2O. Index Headings: Silica; Surface vibrational modes; Photoacoustic spectroscopy; Hydrogen bonding agents.INTRODUCTIONThe use of m spectroscopy to study the adsorption on solid surfaces is well documented in the literature.1 2 For example, hydroxylation of a clean silica surface results in the formation of the free silanol group Si-OH, with a sharp IR band near 3747 cm-1• Further hydroxylation produces a broad band near 3500 cm-1, which is believed to result from various hydrogen-bonded silanol bands leading to a multilayered surface structure of few nm.3-5 Earlier studies had indicated a relationship between the surface silanol band and various chemical activities of silica such as cytotoxicity, 7- 9 catalysis, 10-12 and others.13 Recent studies from our group14-in which the intensity of the silanol band and cytotoxicity of silica, heat-treated at various temperatures up to 1095°C, were investigated have provided a strong correlation between cytotoxicity and intensity of the silanol band.Coating of silica by PVPNO (polyvinyl-2-pyridine N-oxide with the empirical formula C7H8NO), a strong hydrogen bonding agent, is known to reduce the cytotoxicity of silica, presumably by chemically blocking the silanol groups from phospholipids.15 This interaction of the hydrogen bonding agents with the silica can be studied by m spectroscopy, and Knozinger16 and Rouxlet and Semples11 have used transmission m spectroscopy to study the effect of various chemicals on the surface IR modes of silica. However, one of the major disadvantages of transmission IR spectroscopy is that the sample preparation (grinding and mixing with KBr and pelletizing) usually distorts the surface modes (see, e.g., Ref. 14) and there is always a doubt about the effect of the sample preparation on the measured properties. In recent years, photoacoustic (PA) spectroscopy has become the technique of choice for studying the IR spectra of samples in their natural state, since no sample preparation is necessary.18•19 Moreover, according to a recent paper, 20 the relative intensity of the surface modes in PA spectroscopy of silica particles is much higher than that in transmission FT-IR spectroscopy. Consequently PA spectroscopy is ideal for studying the surface chemistry. In this work, we have used PA spectroscopy to investigate the interaction of three hydrogen bonding agents (C7H8NO, C2H50H, and H20) with the silica surface by monitoring changes in the surface m modes. Our results show that the surface IR modes get perturbed to a larger extent than the bulk IR modes in interaction with the hydrogen bonding agents. Moreover, whereas in the earlier studies, the shift of the broad silanol band near 3500 cm-1 was used as a measure of the interaction with hydrogen bonding agents,16•17 here we show that the relative decrease in the intensity of the sharp silanol band near 3747 cm-1 also serves as a quantitative parameter for the relative surface coverage and surface modification. "The flow patterns and mixing characteristics in a water model of C-H2 smelting reduction furnace are experimentally studied in this paper. Water modeling is employed to investigate the features of gas jet stirring and the fluid flow patterns in the bath of a smelting reduction furnace during the top, bottom, and side combined blowing process. The influence of the gas flow rate for top, bottom and side nozzles, angle, submerged depth of each side nozzles and the height of the top nozzle has been examined. It showed that the gas flow rate of side nozzles and bottom nozzle had a key role on the fluid flow and mixing characteristics. The gas jet from the top nozzle could change the agitation and fluid flow pattern caused by the gas jets from the side nozzles in the bath.IntroductionFacing the current natural resources decrease and the environmental degradation, smelting reduction iron-making technique is believed to be the most representative at present. Mid last century, the concept of producing liquid iron or semi-steel directly from ore fines and inexpensive fuel was the subject of considerable pilot plant development activity. Among these projects, the direct smelting process, which is the reduction and melting of iron-bearing materials by carbon and other hydrocarbons in the vessel containing a molten bath, is the most popular one. A number of direct smelting processes have been developed around the world, e.g. COREX, DIOS, HIsmelt, AISI, ROMELT, etc.These studies put forward a new technology, which through bottom nozzle blowing rich hydrogen, top nozzle blowing rich oxygen and provide preheating ore and solvent, side nozzles blowing oxygen-coal to realize smelting reduction iron-making process. Owing to the metallurgy reactions always in high temperature, which is above 1600 °C, it is difficult to visualize the mixing behavior and measure the desired phenomena in the reduction vessel. With water modeling, the primary advantages are that it is relatively easy to observe and measure the flow phenomena in the bath."

During 1964 and 1965 a mineral exploration program was carried out over an area of approximately 250 square miles, located in the Anvil-Vangorda Creek area of east central Yukon, 125 miles northwest of Whitehorse. The Vangorda deposit, a massive lead-zinc sulphide body discovered in 1953, was centred in the area proposed for exploration, a northwest trending belt located between the southwestern flank of the Anvil Range and Pelly River. Exploration for base metals in the remote Anvil area had previously been restricted by poor metal markets in the late 1950's. Regional geologic information was also limited except for publication of a scale 1 inch to 4 mile map by the Geological Survey of Canada in 1961. To effectively explore this area, a combination of geophysical and geochemical methods were essential due to extensive overburden cover varying in depth from a few feet to over 300 feet. (Figure (i) Key Map) Dynasty Explorations initiated the first comprehensive regional exploration program in the Anvil area, utilizing saturation prospecting methods employing geologic, geochemical and geophysical methods. The program involved an approach demanding continual modification of technical and physical logistics. After a total of 12 months of field work involving an expenditure of approximately $450,00, massive sulphides were discovered which subsequently proved to be an economic orebody. Thirteen properties had been acquired and explored. Ten separate geophysical anomalies had been outlined by a combination of magnetic, electric and gravimetric survey techniques of which five were tested by rotary drilling and two by diamond core drilling. The discovery of the Faro deposit was a direct result of this program.

The electrochemical behavior of mineral and coal pyrites in stirred and quiescent alkaline boratelsulfate solutions @H 7.9-10.5) have been investigated using cyclic voltammetry. Significant differences in the electrochemical response of these pyrites were observed. At the mineral pyrite surface, three anodic peaks at about -0.8 V, -0.1 V and +0.5 V (SCE) have been detected along with their corresponding reduction peaks. The first two peaks correspond to FeIFeOI) and FeOI)lFe(III) oxidation. The third peak is present for quiescent conditions but disappears as a distinct peak when the electrolyte is stirred. In the upper voltage region +0.30V (SCE), the current increases markedly during stirring and the reactions correspond to the oxidation of pyrite with the formation FeOII) oxides plus elemental sulfur. Also there is evidence that Fe oxy-ions form. Coal pyrites, under rapid sweep conditions display only the first two anodic peaks, the associated reduction peaks and an additional reduction peak corresponding to one or more of the high voltage oxidation products. After prolonged exposure to high potentials, coal pyrite displays reactions similar to those of mineral pyrite but at much higher current densities demonstrating the much higher reactivity of the coal pyrite. The reactivity sequence was Upper Freeport coal pyrite > Pittsburgh coal pyrite > mineral pyrite.

Electric arc furnace dusts, especially those containing zinc ferrite, are notoriously difficult to process to give valuable products and non-toxic residues. The ideal process would remove and recover the toxic non-ferrous metals as pure metals, of commercial value, and non-toxic residue which can be used as a raw material in the steel industry. From an examination of the thermodynamics of the oxides and chlorides of the various elements in the dust, it is apparent that the chlorides of the toxic non-ferrous elements are more stable than the oxides while the reverse applies to the ferrous elements. This offers the opportunity for a complete separation of the zinc, lead and cadmium from the iron oxide. Results are presented for the chlorination of electric arc furnace dusts under oxidising conditions and the subsequent treatment of the chlorides to recover the pure metals and chlorine which can be recycled back to the reactor.

"Decarburization phenomena on the surface of liquid iron have been simulated by numerical method and the results were compared to the experimental data. During the DeC process in a converter, a large amount of splashed droplets are generated from the top surface of the bath and consequently the reaction surface area is increasing tremendously. Since the decarburization mainly occurs at the interface, it is important to understand the reactions on the liquid iron droplets. The flow and species concentration fields around liquid droplets taking into account the reaction of carbon with oxygen at the interface were calculated by a commercial CFD code FLUENT which solving multiphase Navier-Stokes equation with Volume Of Fluid method, species transport equations and energy transport equation. The initial carbon concentration was fixed to 4 wt% and the concentrations of oxygen in the atmosphere were varied from 5 to 50 wt%. As comparing the numerical calculation with experimental data written in the reference, the results have a good agreement for decarburization rate.IntroductionIn a primary steelmaking process, one of the main functions is to decarburize from hot metal and the 4% of carbon is decreased to about 0.5% of carbon. Even though there are some possible reactions leading to the removal of carbon from hot metal, the main reaction occurs on the free surface by direct oxidation of carbon at the gas-liquid interface with producing the carbon monoxide gas. In many metallurgical processes involving a jet impinging onto a steel bath surface, especially in a Basic Oxygen Furnace (BOF) converter, it is important to understand the behavior of molten iron droplets splashing out of the steel. The iron droplets are generated by an oxygen or air jet blowing and it increases the total surface area of liquid iron tremendously. Since the decarburization reaction is mainly affected by the surface area, it is necessary to verify the decarburization phenomena around the splashed droplets from liquid iron in order to allow an analysis ofBOF process possible."

Ground water at construction sites can be controlled by properly placed wellpoint dewatering systems. Care must be taken in planning cofferdams to have adequate space for and access to pumps, headers and the points. A most important part of dewatering is protection of adjacent structures from movement. A checklist gives items to consider in bidding.

P para la obtención de gasolina natural en Brea y Pariñas, a través de la utilización del gas producido en los separadores de baterias de crudo. Sin embargo, esta cifra se elevó a 22, 000 h.p, demandando una red de 5 plantas de compresión-absorción que funcionan en conjunto con una Planta Central de destilación-estabilización y dos estaciones compresoras auxiliares. En este punto, la intención del trabajo es mostrar el proceso de logro de gasolina natural en el Perú, y el sistema de distribución de gas seco, a partir de la conexión con pozos productores, las plantas de compresión-absorción, equipo de compresores y el equipo de enfriamiento general.
