The tests described herein were made in the course of a series of experiments on coal-mine ventilation factors which the Bureau of Mines has beep; conducting for the past two years at its experimental mine near Bruceton, Pa. The object of the present tests was to determine the leakage of two air locks which had been placed in the experimental mine as hart of the equipment for tests on friction factors. Position of the Doors. The first or inner lock gas across the aircourse between No. 1 and No. 2 left butt entries, and forced the air through these butts. An air-measuring suction in No. 1 butt determined tae volume passing at tent point.

In recent years several mine researchers have studied the optimization of cutoff grade with the purpose of maximizing Net Present Value (NPV). The best and most popular one is the Lane algorithm. Based upon the Lane algorithm it is possible to calculate the optimum cutoff grade for mine, mill, and refinery capacities for single metal deposits with variable grades. The Lane algorithm cannot be used in multiple metal deposits. The reason is that, while in single metal deposits six points are possible candidates for the optimum cutoff grade, in multiple metal deposits an infinite number points are possible candidates for the optimum cutoff grades and objective function evaluation of these infinite points is impossible. In this study the Golden Section search method was used to calculate optimum cutoff grades of multiple metal deposits for the same conditions as Lane assumed in single metal deposits. Based on this method, grade-tonnage distribution uncertainty space of problem is guessed. In the next step, by selecting test points in uncertainty space and evaluating the objective function at these points, a part of uncertainty space will be eliminated. The procedure is then repeated until the uncertainty space has been sufficiently reduced to ensure that the optimum cutoff grades have been located to the required accuracy. Introduction This paper is an amplification of the paper presented by the writer at the last (1930) Annual Meeting of the Institute (1), and is somewhat in the nature of a progress report upon the introduction of pyrite into the field of Canadian consumption. The burner installed at the plant of the Canada Power & Paper Corporation, St. Maurice division, has been slightly changed in dimensions and has been put into continuous operation during the past year. As predicted, it has been possible to somewhat increase the steam consumption and at the same time decrease the amount of sulphur remaining in the calcine. The grade of the sulphur-dioxide gas produced has been maintained very steadily at 12 per cent, and sufficient experience has been obtained to determine the renewal cost of continuous operation. The object of this paper now is to encourage the development of pyrite, particularly by-product flotation pyrite, as it is shown that there is a very definite field in Canada for this material and that all the previous objections to the use of pyrite have been overcome, and that the use of the material in practice in paper mills has been developed to such a point that the operation of manufacturing the sulphite cooking-liquor is as simple as, or simpler than, the present style of operation with the use of sulphur.

Canadian leadership in a global mining context will depend not only on entrepreneurship and best practice but also on technological innovation. This paper argues for more ambition and commitment to R&D for technological innovation in Canadian mining. It focuses on underground hardrock mining, where past R&D initiatives have simply not stood the test of time, and it is important to examine why. Concerns arise because industry’s commitment to R&D has not been sustained over time. Innovation through exploration, processing, and environmental technologies has been more significant. Meanwhile, R&D capacity and synergies in government institutions and universities have not been exploited. There is a need for more commitment, coordination, and collaboration by industry, governments, and universities. This paper examines some corporate models that have achieved sustainable innovation, along with some that have not. A strategy for innovation is discussed that relates to culture, commitment, coordination, and collaboration.

"Abstract - Africa is endowed with a number of the world's giant ore deposits which have contributed significantly to the development of their host countries. Mineral exploration has a long history in the continent, but mining on an unprecedented scale took off during the latter part of the 19th century, accompanied by the development of lines of communication and other infrastructure to service the major mining centres .The ""Winds of Change"" which swept Africa in the 1950s and 1960s brought in new styles of government and economic management to a number of regions, often with demise of economic viability and infrastructure. ln recent years, with the end of the cold war, collapse of communism and changes in South Africa, new opportunities for mineral exploration are opening up rapidly in Africa. However, due to the large cost, long lead-in time, and high risk of developing new mineral ventures in the continent, it is necessary for the host countries to draft realistic and favorable mineral laws and fiscal codes in order to attract, and not deter, potential mineral investors.There will be an on-going role in mineral exploration throughout Africa for the artisanal miner, the smaller entrepreneurs and mining companies, exploration aid programs funded by the developed countries through African governments, as well as the major mining houses who have the resources to develop larger viable mineral deposits."

O curso de Engenharia de Minas sofreu uma expansão, juntamente com todo o ensino superior no país, por volta de 2005. O objetivo do presente estudo é avaliar as características dos cursos do país e realizar uma comparação com cursos de outros países com grande produção mineral. Foi feito um levantamento inicial a partir de informações disponíveis nos sites do MEC, INEP e das universidades. Como complemento, realizou-se um questionário com os coordenadores dos cursos de Engenharia de Minas do Brasil. Foram compilados ainda dados relativos à estrutura curricular e carga horária dos cursos de Engenharia de Minas dos EUA, Canadá, Austrália, Chile e África do Sul. Em relação à comparação das grades curriculares com os cursos de outros países, observou-se que no Brasil o curso possui uma maior cara horária de Tratamento de Minérios em detrimento da lavra. Nos demais países estudados, o foco das disciplinas é a lavra, já que nestes países a área de Tratamento de Minérios é assunto de outras Engenharias.

A comprehensive mathematical model of the Sherritt-Gordon ammoniacal pressure leaching process at K winana Nickel Refinery has been constructed. The process is comprised of six autoclaves functioning as a three-stage leach circuit, operating over the temperature and pressure ranges of 85-95°C and 750-1000 kPa, respectively. The process chemistry forms a complex series-parallel reaction network, characterised by: (1) the gas-liquid mass transfer and reduction of oxygen, (2) the oxidation of eight distinct minerals, (3) the oxidation of sulphur, and successive reactions involving various intermediately oxidised sulphur species, and (4) the oxidation of Fe(II) to Fe(III), and subsequent precipitation as a hydrated ferric oxide. Material balances were developed for species in all three phases, and an energy balance to account for all reactions and phase conversions. The multiple convolution integral (MCI) statistical reactor model was employed for the scale-up of particle kinetics. The model has been validated against plant data, and simulation results are in agreement with plant performance.

Buscando melhorar a detecção das causas de falhas em equipamentos pela equipe no setor de trefilados e ampliados, o tempo de reparo de manutenção, diagnóstico de desempenho dos processos e melhoria na segurança operacional, foi criado um sistema de informação integrado de engenharia de manutenção e processos, com plataforma de carta de controle online e off-line integrada, monitorando aproximadamente quatro mil e trezentas variáveis de processos analógicas e digitais, adicionadas câmeras IP nos processos e desenvolvido um sistema de rastreabilidade de volumes produzidos que garante o correto apontamento de produção da área, minimizando dessa forma as divergências de inventário. A criação da rede integrada, permite unificar as comunicações de automação, possibilitando monitoramento e modificações das lógicas nos PLCs na central da automação, agilizando os diagnósticos e padronizando backups. A partir das implementações e projetos, foi possível aumentar no período de 12 meses em 5,5% a produtividade e otimizar em 2,9% o resultado de interrupção de manutenção dos equipamentos.

Infrastructure may be defined as anything necessary for the development and operation of a project, which is peripheral to the basic extraction, handling and processing of material. "In the current trend toward thicker aluminium plates, a major concern is the stress build-up during quenching which causes distortions during machining. Indeed, cooling rates are not high enough, especially at the core of such thick plates, to prevent any precipitation and quench induced precipitates lower the hardening potential. Multi-scale modelling is required when predicting macro-scale stresses after quenching for thick heat treatable aluminium components. The reason is the instantaneous strong coupling between phase precipitation at the nano-scale and material hardening due to precipitation or softening owing to solute depletion at the microscale. For thick parts, quenching intensities decrease when going from the skin to the core of the component, thus introducing a gradient of nanostructure and consequently a gradient of mechanical properties. In addition, large thermally induced deformations lead to high macroscale residual stresses although part of them is relaxed by plastic deformation. These stresses have been measured in water quenched thick plates of 7040 and 7449 aluminium alloys using neutron diffraction and layer removal techniques and the results when compared with a thermomechanical finite element model of quenching highlight the influence of precipitation.IntroductionIn the processing route of heat-treatable aluminium alloys (AA), a critical step is quenching from the solutionizing temperature. High cooling rates are desired, as they avoid formation of coarse precipitates, which reduce mechanical properties. Fast quenching, however, cannot be achieved in the centre of thick components, where the quenching rate can be more than one order of magnitude lower than at the surface. The existence of a thermal gradient between core and surface leads to a differential thermal deformation which is accommodated by elastic and plastic deformation to comply with the compatibility of deformation. Whenever the material yields, especially at high temperature when the yield strength is low, residual stress remains after quenching due to the irreversibility of plastic deformation. After quenching, the plates are in a state of residual stress that causes unacceptable distortions during machining and may reduce service life drastically. Since stress relaxation is negligible during ageing treatments [1 ], agehardened aluminium parts are usually stress relieved prior to ageing. This is typically achieved by applying plastic deformation: stretching from 1.5 to 3 % in the rolling direction (L) can reduce the internal stresses by a factor of approximately 10 [2, 3]. However, complex geometries or thicker components like thick sheets require other approaches. Reducing the quenching rate by using boiling water for instance leads to lower residual stresses [1, 4]."

Accidents involving powered haulage and mobile equipment such as haul trucks often account for the greatest number of fatalities in the mining industry each year. Despite previous analyses that have identified root causes and other contributing factors, there is still a need to better understand the events leading up to these types of accidents, what lessons may be learned, and what strategies can be employed to prevent fatal accidents from occurring. This study examines Naturalistic Decision Making (NDM) using the critical decision method (CDM). The CDM is a retrospective interview approach used to explore timelimited, high-stakes, decision-making. In this study the CDM is used to obtain more information about what happens prior to, during, and after a potentially fatal situation such as a near-miss event, loss of control, or minor accident involving equipment damage. Researchers captured firsthand accounts from 21 haul truck operators involved in near-miss events from mine sites of various sizes and commodities throughout the United States. These accounts provide rich and detailed narratives from the perspective of haul truck operators themselves and reveal insights into what decisions haul truck operators make, what sensory cues they perceive, and what strategies they employ during challenging and non-routine situations. Decision-related themes that emerged from the data are presented and discussed. These results, along with potential solutions offered by study participants, can help to inform future research, raise awareness about hidden hazards, and build more creative interventions and realistic training scenarios for use by the industry to address haul truck safety issues.

WHAT is wrong with oil shale? The answer is of interest to the public, to the oil refiner, and to the engineer. Many people have invested in shale land or shale securities, and others would invest if early development of the industry were certain. In the face of increasing demands for oil products, oil refiners are threatened with inability to maintain present output unless the supply of domestic petroleum is supplemented. Development of the oil shale industry would open a new field for engineering services. The object of this paper is to suggest reasons why there is but one shale plant in operation in the United States, and to discuss the probable time when the business will be firmly established in Colorado. As the Colorado deposits are the richest and largest in the world, ample supply of material is assured, consequently, this discussion will be confined principally to technical problems and economic problems affecting shale development.

The materials handling systems in the large concentrating plants have required the employment of a considerable number of workmen, many of whom had very little to do except to act as watchmen to avoid bad spills at belt junctions and to operate tripper cars, shuttle belts, etc. Much time also was spent in watching bins to make sure they were properly filled. Approximately four and one-half years ago the author, Yin coopera¬tion with the engineering and supervisory personnel of The Anaconda Company at Anaconda, Montana, began to give this problem serious consideration. Prior to this the author had developed, at the request of The Anaconda Company, a transistorized resistance-sensitive probe relay system for detecting the level of ore in bins. With this system cables or chains were suspended from insulators above the bins and were of suitable length to determine the elevation of the ore in the bins.

The ever increasing demand of high performance rolls in the late finishing stands (F5 – F7) for hot strip mills (HSM) requires better product solutions from roll suppliers. Roll development activities never stop at Union Electric Åkers (UEÅ) in order to meet the requirement. The HYBRID STEEL, a new concept of roll materials especially for the late finishing stands in the HSM, is successfully developed in UEÅ. This paper reviewed the development of previous ICDP as well as enhanced ICDP (eICDP) roll materials, and, the novel HYBRID STEEL roll grade. Rolls manufactured by this new grade have been used in several European mills. A significant improvement over the enhanced ICDP rolls has been observed.

The Louvicourt Mine is located 600 km north of Montreal in the province of Quebec, Canada. The owners are Aur Resources Inc (30 per cent), mine operator, Novicourt Inc (45 per cent) and Teck Corporation (25 per cent). It is an underground mechanised operation with a total work of 290 employees. Since 1994, the mine production is 11 120 456 tonnes at 3.60 per cent Cu, 1.51 per cent Zn, 26.07 g/mt Ag and 0.96 g/mt Au. At a rate of 4300 tonnes per day 365 days per year. Louvicourt Mine is a copper operation since 80 per cent of our revenue is from copper. The mining method is transverse blasthole stoping, mining primary and secondary stopes. The stope dimension is 15 m wide by 30 m high and 10 m to 80 m long for primary stopes. The secondary stopes are limited at 25 m long. Close to 100 000 metres of production drilling per year is required for 115 mm and 165 mm diameter holes. Backfilling is done with pastefill from the start of the operation in 1994. The binder ratio is 4.5 per cent in primary and two per cent in secondary stopes (80 per cent slag and 20 per cent cement). Development requirement to maintain production was 5000 m from 1996, 1997, 1998, 4200 in year 1999, 3200 m in year 2000 and an average of 2500 m in 2001 and 2002. Typical 6.0 m + 4.3 m, 4.9 m + 4.6 m and 4.5 m + 4.6 m headings. In addition more than 1500 metres of development will be excavated in/under paste backfill before 2004. A total of 60 mobile units are required among which for lateral development (three two boom electric hydraulic jumbos û AC Boomer 322, four electric hydraulic roofbolters û Maclean MEM-928 and AC Boltec PL350 and two anfo loader truck û Dux) and for production (four ITH drills û MTI, one electric hydraulic longhole drill û AC Simba H1357, eight LHD û AC-Wagner ST8-B, 1 LHD ST-1000 and two haulage 30 tons trucks û Dux. The 1 January 2002 reserves are 4.1 M tonnes grading 3.1 per cent Cu and 1.9 per cent Zn at an NSR (Net Smelter Revenue) of $US 53. The operating mining costs were at an average of $US 23 from 1996 to year 2000 and $US 25 in 2001. The operating costs ranged from a low of $US 0.41 per pound of copper in 1999 to a high of $US 0.49 per pound of copper in 1998.

The Sovereign, Jubilee, Scotia and Jasper Creek prospects occur in an area of ~3.0 km by 2.5 km (~7.5 km2) in the Hauraki goldfield. The prospects are hosted by andesitic to dacitic flows, autoclastic breccias and localised pyroclastic and air fall deposits. Jubilee and Sovereign prospects lie along the northern and southern parts of the Waitekauri Fault, respectively, whereas Scotia is located ~1 km to the E, and Jasper Creek a further ~1.2 km to the ENE. Wall rocks are typically intensely altered, although the degree of alteration becomes more variable east of Scotia and at Jasper Creek. Alteration minerals include quartz, adularia, albite, chlorite, pyrite, illite, interstratified illite-smectite, smectite and calcite. Several of these minerals have distributions that show distinct zonation with adularia most abundant at Sovereign and Jasper Creek, but restricted to shallow levels at Scotia. Illite occurs throughout Sovereign and Jubilee plus the western margin of Scotia where it grades into interstratified illite-smectite; smectite predominates at Jasper Creek. Veins are uncommon and typically narrow, but show distinct zonations. Quartz veins are more abundant at Sovereign and Jubilee, whereas calcite veins are more abundant at Scotia and Jasper Creek. Laumontite veins occur at Scotia, and rare clinoptilolite, mordenite and stilbite veinlets with calcite occur at Jasper Creek. Fluid inclusion in quartz and calcite homogenised between 141¦ to 272¦C and trapped a dilute solution with an apparent salinity of less than 2.6 weight percent NaCl equivalent. Homogenisation temperatures are hottest at Sovereign (average 241¦C) and Jubilee (average 239¦C), cooler at Scotia (average 204¦C) and coolest at Jasper Creek (average 162¦C). Calculated paleowater table elevations suggest the water table was 680 m to 750 m above sea level at Sovereign and Jubilee, 450 m at Scotia and 225 m at Jasper Creek. The current data suggest three scenarios that can explain why Sovereign and Jubilee are deep and hot, whereas Jasper Creek is cool, shallow and marginal; 1.   some or all of the prospects may represent separate overlapping hydrothermal system, 2.   a high-relief hydrothermal system on the side of volcano with an inclined water table and outflow towards Jasper Creek, and 3.   a low-relief hydrothermal system that has been either tilted or block faulted with greatest uplift and erosion to the west.

For decades, traditional hydraulic engineering approaches have been used for sizing stream channels when stream relocation efforts have been necessary to allow for the advancement of quarry and other surface mining operations. These approaches have been based on various ydraulic models to design channel cross sections and slopes that could pass the required regulatory design storm such as the 2-, 5, lo-, 25-, 50-, or even loo-year events. Designing the stream channel to handle these more extreme ,storm events would often lead to large channel designs which required extensive bank and channel bottom stabilization techniques including concrete, rip rap, gabions, or other expensive approaches. The constructed channels often required ongoing maintenance to remove accumulated sediment and other debris which would settle out and reduce the hydraulic capacity of the channel.

Concentrator plants intake the ore from the mine and produce concentrates by extracting valuable minerals in a succession of process steps. Controlling the extraction process and detecting changes in the process requires updated information on a minute basis. Moreover, due to economical reasons, one must also collect metallurgical samples on a daily basis for monthly reporting.In this paper, we present how slurry samplers were installed in a Cu-Ni flotation plant to accomplish the aforementioned tasks. An on-stream elemental analyser at the plant is used for flotation process control by taking samples from selected process streams. Two process streams, the flotation feed and tail, are also equipped with metallurgical samplers. The metallurgical samplers were designed to have low head loss, be robust and easy to maintain and to collect slurry samples in a reliable way for the metallurgical accounting.Samples were collected by different sampler types and we discuss the uncertainty arising from sampling in the assays. Variographic analysis was carried out on the process data in order to find periodic components in the process, and estimate the correct number of shift sample increments and measurement error components. The metallurgical samplers were proven to be reliable devices with zero downtime and no sanding issues in the main process flows. In addition, we show that the tail measurement is the most important one for the plant recovery calculation, which emphasises the importance of the sampling accuracy in the tail stream.CITATION:Lohilahti, J, Korpela, T, Minkkinen, P and McPherson, B, 2014. "Minerals processors can improve production by using the best available control technology to control their operations. Many mines use expert systems that can provide improved results over manual or basic control, but better results can be achieved using multivariable predictive control. Over the past few years, the application of multivariable predictive control has gained acceptance in many mining processes and has recently proven to be suitable for some of the most challenging processes. This advanced control technology has been successfully applied to a wide variety of processes; alumina digestion, ball mills, CCD/thickeners, kilns/calciners/roasters, heat exchangers/evaporators, and more demanding processes like SAG mills and flash smelters.This paper discusses the needs of advance control technologies in the mining industry, including the impact of these technologies on best practices for implementation and long term sustainability. Results of the multivariable predictive control applications in mineral processing are discussed, and in particular the application to the SAG mill. In addition, an example of the benefits improvement that can be achieved with this technology is presented.INTRODUCTIONThere has been a long term perception in the mainstream mineral processing industry that best advanced control solution is an expert system. There a numerous instances of expert systems used for control of SAG mills, as well as kilns or roasters, thickeners and more recently flotation circuits. Many of theses expert systems have been installed by small, independent companies or by OEMs of processing equipment. Undoubtedly these expert systems have provided millions in benefits to the owners of mineral processing plants.It is this author’s proposition that it is a misconception to believe that expert systems are the best solution for mineral processors, and that in many cases the best solution is Multivariable Predictive Control (MPC). Better control and optimal operations can be achieved through the use of MPC. Another important consideration when considering advanced control technologies is the implementation and support effort. These types of applications have been known to deteriorate, even to disuse, when they are not kept up to date with changes to the process or equipment. The audience is invited to listen to discussion and draw their own opinion. The author has been involved in installing control systems for over 20 years, advanced solutions for over 15 years, and has had privilege to consult with many miners concerning the selection and application of advanced controls over the past 6 years."

Treatment of plant effluent including waste water and associated soluble and insoluble substances, is of a primary concern of many process industries including mineral processing operations. The major objective of such treatment is the removal of such impurities which can interfere with the process through the use of recycled water, and/or to comply with environmental ordinances. For example, Ramirez and Clements (1978) state that molybdenum contents in the range of 19 mg/1 eventually poison ion exchange resigns used for the extraction of uranium. In addition, recent restrictions by the EPA on molybdenum discharge values for mining waste water necessitate removal of this metal to (0.5-1.0 mg/1).
