It is generally admitted that a god, practical and commercial set of specifications for the use of the many purchasers of cast-iron does not exist. A few good sets are in the hands of large buyers, but even these are very different, contradictory, and not intended to cover a wide range of product. Furthermore, most of them have been prepared to cover but one branch of the industry. It is strange that purchasers of cast-iron have not looked into this question long ago and demanded good, uniform cast-irou. Probably cast-iron has been discarded from many uses because of its failure in a few instances, even though the failure was due to ignorance of the quality of the iron, or perhaps to abnormally bad iron. Some foundrymen seem to consider all gray iron from a given foundry as uniform, especially if they know that it has been made from certain well-known brands of pig. The Bureau of Mines conducted laboratory and larger scale studies on samples of domestic perovskite and ilmenite ore concentrates to devise a procedure for recovering TiC from these ores. From the concentrates, mixtures of titanium and calcium carbides were produced. The carbides were then ground and reacted with water. This reaction decomposed the CaC2 to acetylene and hydrated lime and simultaneously liberated the TiC. Using a combination of elutriation and gravity-separation techniques to separate the hydrated lime, approximately 93 pct of the titanium was subsequently recovered as purified carbide containing 54 to 70 pct titanium with CaO content as low as 0,6 pct. This combination of techniques can be used to separate more than 90 pct of the CaO from the TiC. Therefore, this carbiding procedure is a viable method for treating titaniferous materials, including perovskite, that contain more than 20 pct CaO. Tests made in a static-bed reactor showed that for the reaction of TiC with elemental chlorine to produce titanium tetrachloride (TiCI4), a temperature of at least 940° F is desirable to achieve a suitable extraction of titanium in a laboratory chlorination reactor. In fluidized-bed tests at 840° F, 98 pct of the titanium contained in TiC was extracted.

Of the variables affecting the electrical properties of coal measure rocks, water content is by far the most important, This paper describes specially developed apparatus and methods of measuring electrical conductivity and permittivity at constant humidity conditions. Electrical properties variations were measured for Applachian and Illinois, U.S.A. coal 2 basin samples in the frequency range 2 X 10 to 2 X 10 Hz. Coal measure rock electrical behavior, when correlated with mechanical behavior, is potentially useful in a number of mining applications.

In mid-Tertiary time a wet silici-alkalic magma penetrated the Precambrian rocks of what is now the Tenmile Range of Central Colorado and formed the Climax Stock. The stock is a composite one and was intruded in four separate irruptions, each giving rise to a major hydrothermal event. The first three of these produced large stockwork ore bodies that cap and flank the tops of their respective source intrusives; the fourth, and last, yielded almost no commercial mineralization. The ore bodies and their related zones of alteration are circular to ring-shaped in plan and arcuate in section. The different phases of the stock are so positioned with respect to each other that many of the circular and arcuate zones of mineralization and alteration overlap or are juxtaposed. Evidence of a time separation between the different ore bodies is found in certain dikes that were intruded between periods of mineralization and are well mineralized in one ore body but are barren in another. If it is assumed that the parent magma at Climax contained 10 per cent "water," that the "water" contained 0.1 grams per liter of molybdenum, and that the processes of extraction were 100 per cent efficient, then approximately 10 cubic miles of magma would be required for the formation of each ore body. The volume requirements, taken in conjunction with the cross-sectional areas of the different phases of the stock to explored depths, suggest to the authors that each magma chamber was columnar, extended to a depth of thousands of feet, and was connected with a much larger master reservoir. The repetition of similar intrusive, structural, and hydrothermal events, indicates periodic tapping of this reservoir. A regular chemical evolution of the parent magma is suggested by the systematic change in metal ratios and differences in the sites of deposition, relative to the source intrusive, in each of the four separate igneous hydrothermal stages. The preparation of ground was due to changes in magmatic and/ or hydrothermal pressures within the igneous-hydrothermal columns; small, repeated, up and down movements of the rock enclosing the tops of the columns formed the stockwork fractures into which the mineralizers penetrated. The forceful emplacement of each successive phase of the Climax Stock resulted in a slight doming and rotation to the westward of the earlier-formed geologic features. Postore normal displacement along the Mosquito fault is estimated at about 9000 feet. Part of one ore body was cut by the fault and lies at depth below the Paleozoic sedimentary strata on the hanging wall. On the footwall side of the fault, subaerial erosion and glaciation removed a large part of one ore body and uncovered the top of a second.

Our aging infrastructure includes numerous tunnels that provide easy access through topographic and societal obstacles. These tunnels are renewable resources that require periodic maintenance and rehabilitation to extend their useful lifespan to hundreds or even thousands of years. However, as with any structural rehabilitation project, tunnel liner rehabilitation requires an inordinate amount of evaluation and care due often poorly documented original construction and subsequent repair construction methods and materials. This paper documents the investigation, planning, design, and construction efforts of the rehabilitation of a 74-year old, 216-meter (713 foot) long two-lane highway tunnel in moderately fractured to highly sheared basalt on the Oregon coast. The tunnel consists of four sections lined originally with timber and subsequently overlaid with concrete, and three unlined sections.

THE task of establishing a new corrosion testing laboratory is more difficult than it need be because there is very little information on the subject available in the literature. Many articles describing tests and results may be found, but a wide search will unearth only passing remarks on the different types of equipment that may be selected for accelerated corrosion tests. An article describing some of the apparatus needed in a corrosion laboratory should be of help to those interested in building a new unit or in making additions to an old one. In May of this year, the writer was given the assignment of equipping a laboratory for general corrosion testing, to form a part of the new Physical Metallurgy Research Laboratories of the Department of Mines and Resource~ at Ottawa. With the help of senior members of the staff, along with what could be gathered from other sources, a list of necessary equipment was compiled and a plan for arranging it in the rooms was decided upon. Where possible, the apparatus was constructed in the excellent machine shops at the disposal of this Department, while the rest was placed on order with the manufacturers.

Neste trabalho, foi investigada a influência da textura de fitas de NiTi superelástico no início do processo de cristalização de um revestimento de TiO2 flexível. Foram utilizadas a calorimetria diferencial, cartografia Raman e difração de raios X para o estudo. Foi mostrado que existe uma influência significativa da textura do substrato no crescimento de grãos de anatase e rutila no filme de TiO2. Amostras com menor rugosidade apresentaram grãos mais desenvolvidos para todas as temperaturas de cristalização. Mostrou-se também que o substrato de NiTi promoveu a formação de TiO2 rutila em temperaturas abaixo daquelas observadas para a cristalização de pós.

"In order to ensure the stability of roadways, Anglo American Metallurgical Coal (AAMC) has developed a roof support design methodology that integrates analytical, numerical and empirical modelling. This methodology currently is based on a deterministic approach (a single factor of safety against failure is calculated). However, an improved methodology, based on stochastic modelling technique, has also been developed and currently being evaluated. The main advantage of this methodology is that the design is based on the probability distributions of input parameters; thus the outcome is based on a distribution of factors of safety rather than a single factor of safety. An evaluation of factors of safety may also be used to determine the likelihood of failure, which in turn may be utilized to quantitatively determine and evaluate the associated risks in decision making process. This methodology has been evaluated at Grasstree and Moranbah North Coal Mines in the designs of roof support in various critical areas and has been proven to be successful and a better way of determining the roof support requirements.This paper demonstrates the application of this methodology in a design of an install road roof support at Moranbah North Mine, where the 1,750 tonne capacity ''world's highest rated longwall"" has recently been installed.INTRODUCTIONAnglo American Metallurgical Coal Australia (AAMC) operates three longwall (LW) mines located in Central Queensland. There is an increasing emphasis on the reliability at these operations, as the longwalls are getting deeper and facing more geologically challenging conditions. In addition, the Anglo American Vision is to achieve ""Zero Harm"" through the effective management of safety at all businesses and operations. In order to accomplish this vision, AAMC has developed a proactive ground control management system for a safe and efficient production of underground reserves.Proactive ground control management involves understanding the impacts of the geotechnical environment on likely ground behavior, and it consists of approximately 15 major elements. One of the most essential fundamentals of proactive ground control management is to utilize a roof support design methodology that considers different failure mechanisms and also takes into account all important elements. The design methodology becomes even more important when the area in question is a critical area, which is defined as a high risk roadway where any failure may cause increased levels of safety and financial risks to underground workforce and operations."

For blasting in coal mines the U. S. Bureau of Mines recommends that permissible explosives be used exclusively, that these shall be fired electrically, and that where feasible the working place shall be cut or sheared. These recommendations are made to promote safety and prevent mine explosions. Although permissible explosives are not flameless, their lower flame temperature and shorter duration of flanie make their use safer than that of nonpermissible explosives. Mixtures of air with both methane and bituminous coal dust, which are liable to occur in coal mines, may be ignited by coming in contact with any type of flame or spark of sufficient temperature and duration or by the firing of a blast. In a working place where a blast is to be fired, in addition to the use of permissible explosives, adequate ventilation for the dilution and removal of accumulations or outbursts of flammable gas should be provided. Bituminous coal mines should be rock-dusted as a means of rendering the coal dust harmless The efficient use of permissible explosives depends upon the proper preparation of the working place, standardized drilling, the strength characteristics of the explosive, and the use of a proper weight of charge. Experienced shotfirers should load, tamp and fire all holes. The major part of the information and data here presented is based on the results of efficiency tests made in large producing mines of Pennsylvania and Illinois. Bureau of Mines Report of Investigations, Serial No. 2697, describes how a standard method of blasting was worked out and put into operation in a mine in southern Illinois.' This paper contains a description of the methods worked out subsequently in another mine in that district. In most metalliferrous open pit mines with heterogeneous orebodies, blast-induced rock movement is a crucial outcome that has unfavorable impact on ore and waste segregation in the post-blast muck pile, resulting in either ore loss (the ore is misclassified as waste and sent to the waste rock dump) and/or ore dilution (waste is misclassified as ore and sent to the processing plant). While many studies have been carried out to assess the influence of blast design parameters on blast-induced rock movement, the influence of rock mass characteristics in these studies have been overlooked.

Some fundamental studies were carried out in order to produce composite powders comprising of two or three metal salts by using liquid-liquid extraction and to develop the control technology of the particle size. The combination of samarium and cobalt was selected as the two component composite powders. Both stripping and crystallization occurred at the same time by emulsifying the organic phase loading the two metals extracted with Versa tic Acid 10 and the aqueous solution containing oxalic acid. The effect of aqueous pH, oxalic acid concentration and agitation speed was examined on some properties such as crystallization percent, particle size and shape of each metal oxalate powders obtained in this process. The analysis by using EDX showed that the two metal oxalates were distributed uniformly at the same ratio as the organic phase composition.

The sulfation rates of magnesium oxide and calcium oxide (molar ratio 7:3) contained in calcined CMA ( calcium magnesium acetate) by SO2 were measured. The experiments were carried out in the temperature range 700 to 1100 °C and under the SO2 concentrations of 0.3 to I mol % (5 % 02). In the low-temperature range below 830 °C the reaction produced CaSO4.3MgSO4 and unreacted MgO, but no MgSO4 phase. The formation of CaSO4.3MgSO4 phase has a significant implication in that it allows the utilization of MgO for SO2 removal whereas the sulfation of MgO from conventional sources is so slow that it is of no practical interest. Thus, the calcined CMA can remove SO2 at lower temperatures than conventional SO2 absorbents and at a greater capacity. Above 950 °C only CaO reacts with SO2, but at a much greater rate than the calcined Ca(OH)2, which is one of the most reactive SO2 absorbents.

This report summarizes work performed under Phase I of USBM Contract No. H0366024, Noise Reduction of Jumbo Mounted Percussive Drills. Four drills -Gardner-Denver D93LAR and DH123 and Ingersoll-Rand 0475 and VL120 models were measured at the two manufacturers? test sites; data are given in terms of characteristic noise and vibration levels. A survey of percussive rock drill users is reported. The rationale for the choice of a demonstration drill, the Gardner-Denver DH123, is given and a desired noise reduction goal is established.

A mass spectral scheme of analysis was devised which can be used to identify individually a single compound from a larger group of similar compounds. Mass spectra for 32 alkyl aryl sulfides are provided for future reference work, and analytical correlations used in producing the analytical scheme are discussed. Some of the correlations show that base peaks are either the same mass as the parent peaks or may be derived from cleavage alpha to the sulfur atom with migration of one hydrogen to the sulfur atom. Other spectral consistencies provide means of separating ortho-, meta-, and paratolyl arrangements in an overall analytical scheme. Determinations of chain lengths and separation of isomeric species are also discussed.

It is a pleasure to have the opportunity of being here today to discuss the application of horizontal filters in the metallurgical industries. The use of horizontal type filters has been limited in metallurgical plants. However, in the recent past there have been new designs of this type equipment which greatly broaden their field of application. Through their use in many applications, important economies can be achieved over more conventional methods. The first of the modern continuous horizontal filters was initially developed by Oliver United Filters as their scroll type horizontal filter. This was an outgrowth of the old Oliver Sand Table that was limited to very coarse, free filtering pulps containing no appreciable amount of fine particles. The sand table was rather limited in application. The later continuous scroll type horizontal filter provided for a reverse air blow after discharge which reslurried the heel remaining and permitted the filtration of pulps containing finer particles. In the manufacture of phosphoric acid by the ?wet? process, the filtration of gypsum from the strong acid presented an extremely difficult filtration problem due to blinding of the filter media caused by crystallization of the soluble salts contained in the acid. A filter which allowed for continuous cloth washing was required, and this led to the development of the continuous pan type, and travelling belt type horizontal filters which provided for this need. Among the filters developed were the Prayon by Engineering and Industrial Corporation of Luxembomg for use in their phosphoric acid plants. They are one of the largest manufacturers of phosphoric acid in Europe. The Dorr-Oliver Traveling Pan Filter was also developed by Mario Giorgini, Manager of Dorr-Oliver?s Italian subsidiary, for use with the Dorr Company?s phosphoric acid process. Basically, there are four existing types of horizontal filters in commercial use at this time: The scroll discharge non-pan type, the continuous belt type (Lurgi), rotary pan type, and the traveling belt type. The construction and principle of operation of these various filters will be discussed.

The advantages and limitations of the borehole method are outlined, and general principles of plant design are discussed.INTRODUCTIONFor many years, attempts have been made to reduce mine development costs by various methods. Some of the, techniques of tunnelling have been adopted in horizontal headings, and in main vertical shafts, mechanical plant has displaced hand labour with notable success. However, in the field of small rises and winzes, improvements have largely been effected by attention to details of procedure. The most promising avenues for' substantial reductions in cost relate to:(a) Long-hole drilling(b) The borehole method(c) Calyx drilling.Whilst each of these methods has its peculiar advantages, the borehole rising method is probably most useful, and capable of wide application.In brief, the borehole method of rising requires a, drill hole parallel to the axis of the rise. A hoisting rope is passed through the borehole, and is attached to a platform on which the rising crew are raised with their equipment to the drilling position in the rise.When properly planned, the method is particularly safe, and has generally received the approval of mine inspectors and safety authorities. The movement of air from the surface, through the workings and then back to the surface, is the most important consideration in the ventilation design. The purpose of mine ventilation is seen as the maintenance of acceptable atmospheric environments wherever men work or travel underground; and acceptability is related to the risk of harmful biological responses associated with exposure to atmospheric environments in mines. In mine ventilation, a design engineer often has to contend with a number of problems not experienced to the same degree in other industrial situations; i.e. the vast extent of many workings - offering continuously moving work locations; the difficulty of predicting. inflows of contaminants to the airways which contain the micro-environment; and especially, the effect of mining activity within the duct system (e.g. mine roadways) carrying the airflow. Mining of uranium does not differ, in many respects, from the mining of other metals; the ore must be drilled, blasted and transported from the mine. Underground mining proceeds by the continous development and advancement of a network of passages and rooms or stopes from which ore is excavated. As in most mines, rock conditions and ore grades in uranium deposits very from area to area and between different mines. 1 In uranium mining, in addition to eliminating noxious gases from blasting, diesel equipment exhaust, and the control of dust, it is also necessary to dilute and remove radon, the gaseous element in the uranium chain and its decay products. Long term epidemiologic studies of United States uranium miners and that of miners in Czechoslovakia have confirmed that there is an association between excessive ex¬posure to radon daughters and an increased risk of lung cancer. The common practices for controlling these airborne contaminants are: (1) the circulation of large volumes of fresh air from surface to dilute these contaminants to a permissible concentration, and (2) the sealing of worked-out areas to prevent ingress of radon into ventilating air. 2 The sealing of worked-out areas can be easily and effectively accomplished, but the contaminants intro¬duced from the workings may raise the concentrations in the airways despite a good ventilation system and use of the maximum available amount of fresh air. The ventilating air can be strategically filtered to reduce dust and radon daughters to acceptable levels, and reused prior to final discharge. This strategy properly applied, will decrease the air colume requirements in certain marginal areas of the mine and thereby avoid an overall increase in the mine airflow. This is particularly advantageous in the cold climates of Canada, where the incoming fresh air must be heated in the winter months to a comfortable temperature, Thus, an economical and technically feasible air filtration system, strategically placed, can improve the underground mining environment and reduce the overall cost of ventilating the mines. In addition to affording flexibilty to the venti¬lation system, a potential saving of $1,500/m3/s/year would be realized if air is successfully cleaned and reused when compared with the conventional methods of generating an air current. 3 Denison is justly proud of its achievements in the air filtration technology development. This paper limits itself to an examination of the radiation control aspect of the air filtration strategy.

The winning of metals often requires fine grinding of very hard ore. The US Bureau of mines measured compressive strengths exceeding 100,000 PSI (700 MPa) in Minnesota taconites. Grinding down to 300 mesh (50 µ) is required for some fine-grained taconites. While other metal ores may not be as strong, significant grinding costs are the rule rather than the exception. One author recently reported that a 7% drop in grinding costs would fully offset a doubling of the drill and blast budget. Another author found that drill and blast costs were 13% of the costs of producing iron ore concentrate while fine crushing and grinding were over 60% of the cost of producing concentrate.

The East West Link road tunnels are proposed to provide a connection between the CityLink toll road and the Eastern Freeway north of the Melbourne CBD. The alignment passes from Moonee Ponds valley beneath the Upfield Line railway cutting, Royal Park, the historic Melbourne Cemetery and beneath Alexander Parade rising to an eastern portal at Hoddle Street. The western (Royal Park) part of the alignment passes through the folded and faulted Silurian Melbourne Formation, which has been subjected to deep weathering since the Triassic.The Melbourne Formation in the Royal Park area is mainly characterised by interbedded sequences of siltstone and fine-grained sandstone. The beds are often graded and a clear boundary between the siltstone and fine-grained sandstone rock can be difficult to distinguish. Variation in lithology and the presence of structural geological features such as folds and faults have resulted in an irregular weathering profile within the Silurian rock; nonetheless the formation typically becomes less weathered with depth.Due to difficulties in obtaining reliable laboratory strength and stiffness relationships with weathering grade, in situ testing methods such as downhole shear wave velocity and high-quality pressuremeter testing are a useful aid to assessing appropriate geotechnical parameters for design.This paper presents an analysis of the variation in shear modulus of the Melbourne Formation, determined at small-strain (from downhole seismic data) and at ‘engineering scale’ strain (from pressuremeter tests) for extremely weathered (XW), highly weathered (HW) and moderately weathered (MW) rock. Estimates of small strain shear modulus (Go) obtained a range between 400 to 3400 MPa for these weathering grades. By comparison against the pressuremeter test data, reduction factors to be applied to these Go values to estimate shear moduli at engineering strain levels typically range between 0.10 and 0.35.The downhole geophysics undertaken in the Royal Park boreholes also suggests that there is an inversion in velocity between approximately 15 and 27?m depth below the top of the formation. This is thought to be related to the effects deep Plio-Pleistocene weathering, iron cementation of joints and increasing frequency of ‘non-healed’ joints in the transition from MW to slightly weathered (SW) rock.CITATION:Macklin, S, Schult, M, Terzic, Z and Chu, D, 2014.
