Ferric (Fe3+) ions are omnipresent in flotation circuits. Depending on pH and the nature of the ore body, Fe3+ ions may play a role in the adsorption of thiol collectors on sulfide minerals. To investigate this possibility, a two-compartment galvanic coupling cell was designed. This cell was used to monitor changes in contact angle of a sulfide mineral in one compartment, while varying concentrations of the Fe3+ ions in the other. The results showed that Fe3+ ions promote xanthate adsorption as indicated by the increase in contact angle. Implications of this finding in sulfide mineral flotation in general will be discussed.

Reserve Mining Company, the first large-scale taconite pellet producer in the United States, mines it's crude ore at the Peter Mitchell Mire located on the eastern end of the Mesabi Iron Range near Babbitt, MN. The ore is processed at Reserve's beneficiation plant on the north shore of lake Superior at Silver Bay, M. The mine and plant are linked by a 47 mile, double track, railroad which is owned and operated by Reserve. (see Fig 1). At rated capacity, the mine can produce 33 million It/yr of crude ore, 15 million It/yr of waste rock and 1.0 - 1.4 million yd3/yr of glacial till stripping. Haulage of all mined material is accomplished using trucks. Ore is transported by tractor-trailer side dump units which have capacitys ranging from 83 to 110 long tons. Waste rock and glacial till is transported in end dump units of 50 to 120 LT capacity. Loading is accomplished by 11/13 yd3 power shovels and 7/10 yd3 front-end loaders.

The Aberfoyle Tin Mine lies on a wide sloping bench about 2,000-2,500 ft. above sea level, at Rossarden, 14 miles north of Avoca, in north-eastern Tasmania. The quartz-cassiterite veins were discovered in 1916, but mining did not begin until 1926. Trenching revealed seven small tin-bearing veins within a width of 57 ft. of Palaeozoic slates and sandstones, and it was assumed that the mineralization extended beneath the adjacent cover of Permian strata, but the presence of the main vein system (the 26 Vein System) was not suspected until the Aberfoyle Fault was discovered late in 1928.The mine has now been developed on thirteen levels, to a depth of 1,350 ft. The lower limit of economic mineralization appears to lie at about the ll-level, which is 1,060 ft. vertically below the concealed outcrop of the main veins. In 1986 the city of Johannesburg celebrates its first century of existence. The fact that the city was founded to exploit the gold deposits which underlaid it, prompts this review of the gold process development in the mining industry of South Africa. Clearly a complete history of, the gold recovery process to date is not called for and it is proposed therefore to outline the most significant developments which have taken place since the middle 1930's, that is to say the last 50 years or so. Prior to this period the industry had seen the development of comminution processes employing cone crushing in closed circuit with vibrating screens followed by grinding in rotating mills and the gradual disappearance of stamp mills. The all sliming process was well established as a viable route and continuous dewatering in thickeners, continuous leaching and filtration were serious rivals for the earlier batch processes. Continuous processes for gravity concentration had also been developed and the recovery of gold from pregnant solutions employed cementation on zinc dust as opposed to shavings. Thus at the beginning of the half century under review the industry had adopted, or started to adopt, many of the processes still accepted as modern practice. However in some areas little change was evident this was especially so in the smelthouse where some thirty more years were to elapse before the hand stoked coal fired calcine and reverbatory furnaces were replaced by more environmentally acceptable electric furnaces. The most significant feature in recent history has been the mining of progressively lower grades of ore and the retreatment of tailings from earlier operations, much of the latter comprising tailings only a decade or even less in age. Notable among these operations are those on the East Rand near Springs in the Transvaal, in the Orange Free State at Welkom and more recently, massive reclamation of tailings close to the city centre itself. The carbon in pulp (CIP) process has been much publicised in recent years and all new plants erected during the 1980's have adopted this route for gold recovery. However the major proportion of tonnage milled in the industry is still subjected to the more traditional process of liquid solids separation by vacuum filtration. "Over the years many differing approaches have been developed to clearly understand the nature, mode of occurrence, associations and deportment of both free-milling and refractory gold in a wide variety of differing geologic environments and plant products. Many approaches can be taken to characterize the ore which may occur as complex fine grained gold, ultra-fine grained gold, coarse nuggetty gold, complex Asrich refractory gold and double-refractory gold. The approach taken in assessing small drill core composites from Novo Resources Beaton Creek Paleoplacer gold project located in the Pilbara region of Australia was complicated by the nature of the ore, the small amount of sample available from current exploration work, and the gold grade and the grain size distribution. In this case the scope of the study was limited by sample availability although significant amounts of valuable information was also gained. This gold characterization study included the following elements:??Size fraction assays??Ore microscopy??Preparation of heavy mineral concentrates from sized fractions (screening) of crushed or milled head using heavy liquids and Superpan table.??Systematic scans of the heavy mineral concentrate, middling, and tailing fractions using TIMA Automated Scanning Electron Microscopy integrated with an Energy Dispersive Spectrometry to provide semi-quantitative elemental analysis of the individual grains found in the sample.The unique methodology employed to detail the gold deportment was the combination of the Tescan Integrated Mineral Analyser (TIMA) and the Oxford INCA GSR software. This technique not only allowed us to document the deportment of gold but recognize other associated minerals, which included gersdorffite, chalcopyrite, uraninite, coffinite, brannerite and several Rare Earth-bearing minerals.INTRODUCTIONGold deportment studies are commonly carried out on preliminary gold exploration projects in order to determine the various limitations, which may effect processing of the potential ore. This is often because it may be expected that there may be a refractory component to the gold, which may limit physical separation techniques and suggest more costly hydrometallurgical techniques. Often when carrying out gold deportment studies the mineralogical methods may be limited to assuming that the gold will be fine and easily found using standard techniques of optical microscopy or Scanning Electron Microscopy. This may not always be the case as various geological environments may pose their own individual problems to determining the deportment of the gold grains."

The Mount Isa Rocky Paste Fill (RPF) was one of the five fill options investigated for the Enterprise Mine filling between June 1996 and September 1996. Co-disposal of deslimed cemented tailings (CHF) and suitably graded rockfill (RF) in certain ratios produced the rocky paste fill. The RPF behaved like a cohesive paste with very high proportion of rockfill in the mix. Several large-scale mixing trials and drop tests proved that the rocky pastefill results in a homogeneous fill mass after placement. Segregation of RF was a common problem with MIM's traditional cemented rock fill (CRF), which is a combination of CHF and RF. The segregation was eliminated and a non-segregating paste like fill was created by optimising the particle size distribution of RF, and combining the RF and the CHF in optimum ratios. In rocky pastefill, the excess water in the cemented deslimed tailings slurry is taken up by the rockfill as the surface moisture on the rockfill particles and also as pore water between the particles. This results in thickening of the CHF, and the resultant mix is a non-segregating cohesive paste, which can easily spread to any horizontal distance inside a stope at a very low surface angle. The rocky pastefill releases no free water and relatively more pervious than the standard CHF due to rockfill component. With an average cement addition of 1.5 to 2% the rocky pastefill can develop higher strengths over 1Mpa. The rocky paste fill is applicable in many situations and can accommodate a variety of coarser materials that would be available in different mine sites. This paper present the research work and the experience associated with the rocky paste fill, and gives clear design principles for any potential users.

Uranium mining remains controversial in many parts of the world, especially in a post-Fukushima context, and often in areas with significant uranium resources. Although nuclear proponents point to the relatively low carbon intensity of nuclear power compared to fossil fuels, opponents argue that this will be eroded in the future as ore grades decline and energy and greenhouse gas emissions (GGEs) intensity increases as a result. Invariably both sides fail to make use of the increasingly available data reported by existing uranium mines through sustainability reporting ? allowing a comprehensive assessment of recent trends in the energy and GGEs intensity of uranium production, as well as combining this with reported mineral resources to allow more comprehensive modelling of future energy and GGEs intensity. In this study, detailed data is reported for numerous uranium mines around the world, including production, energy and GGEs intensity and reported mineral resources. An important aspect included ? arguably unique and never before published ? is the relationship between ore grade and recovery, which is crucial in future projections of uranium mining. Overall, the paper shows the importance of continuing to improve reporting by the uranium sector as well as the ability to analyse key trends and future projections in energy and GGEs intensity of uranium production.

A new assessment model has been proposed for metal production and its recycling system. The model consists of three processes, smelting of ore, cascading and upgrading of metal scrap. The present approach is to assess the total energy consumption of the system, by introducing two equations for describing the relationships between critical impurity content and the mass of production or scrap recycling. The total energy consumption in the system can be described as a function of recycling rate and performance of the upgrading process. The present model suggests that the impurity removal efficiency and yield in the upgrading process are essential to reduce the energy consumption in the systems. Especially, such points should be explicitly controlled in recycling of aluminum. The potential capability of this model was also discussed by obtaining several quantitative information required for the process design and the operational control of beneficial recycling of metals.

The ferromanganese industry is under pressure to deal with the slag arising from the production of ferromanganese, which is discarded in landfills or slag heaps. This material poses an environmental and health risk to surrounding ecosystems and communities, and disposal costs are increasing. Ferromanganese slag contains an appreciable amount of residual manganese metal, which can be exploited. Previous work has shown that the slag can be leached fully, while rejecting the silica to a residue. The methods that were investigated to recover manganese from the leach solution included hydroxide precipitation to upgrade the leach solution followed by manganese carbonate precipitation to produce a pure manganese carbonate product or a manganese carbonate furnace feed material, which would be recycled to increase manganese recoveries in the production of ferromanganese. In addition, electrowinning of electrolytic manganese dioxide from the leach solution was studied. The methods were compared in terms of selectivity, costs, and product quality. Co-recovery of the leach residue, which is a potential cement additive, is discussed. Among the methods investigated to upgrade the pregnant leach solution, hydroxide precipitation utilizing ammonia to adjust the pH appears to be the most effective in removing major impurities such as iron, aluminium, and silica to less than 1 ppm. The manganese carbonate and impure manganese carbonate furnace feed products met quality specifications. However, although the production of these materials was technically viable, the large amounts of base reagent that were required to raise the pH, and the associated high operating costs, rendered the process uneconomic. An optimization study was therefore carried out with the primary objective to determine the ideal acid amount to be utilized in the waterstarved digestion stage, thereby decreasing acid and base consumption while optimizing the quality of the pregnant leach solution, and producing a leach residue that contained <1% Mn. The outcome was an economically viable process. Additional benefits included an increase in the manganese content of the impure manganese carbonate furnace feed material, and a substantial reduction in the dilution of the pregnant leach solution, thereby maintaining high manganese concentrations that rendered the solution viable for electrowinning of electrolytic manganese dioxide, the production of which yielded a current efficiency of 74%.

IN my opinion, the concentration of minerals by flotation is the most interesting problem in ore-dressing, and will command eventually far more consideration than it has at present. For many ores it furnishes a complete method of concentration absolutely independent of specific gravity, and thus simplifies the milling of many difficult combinations. Not having to recognize the influence of specific gravity, we are also able to dispense with some of the complications resulting from classifying-conditions. Where flotation cannot be used for a complete separation of the minerals from the gangue, it will be found, in nearly all cases, to save those portions which are generally lost by reason of their fine state of division. For this reason, it should be looked upon mainly as an aid to general concentration, although there are many ores so well adapted to flotation that more than 90 per cent. of the valuable metals can be recovered from them in one operation by this process. In presenting the results of my investigations in. flotation, I have endeavored to theorize as little as possible. That side of the subject has been extensively discussed by others. My earliest work with flotation was done in 1895, when I used various oils, grease, soap, etc., with results that were remarkable. I did not realize then that with water alone equally good separations could be made. Up to 1906, my endeavors were confined to attempts to keep the concentrates on the tables well wetted and away from exposure to the air. In common with others, I observed that when there was any obstruction in. the wash-water on the table of sufficient size to divert the water to either side, the concentrates collected, and, on exposure to the air, would promptly float away. Surface treatments like laser shock peening (LSP) induce residual stresses penetrating up to 1 mm deep, surpassing traditional methods, thus significantly increasing the potential impact on materials prevalent in the automotive and aerospace sectors. Through extensive fatigue testing and fractography investigations, it was determined that LSP resulted in a fatigue life increase of over five times for aluminium alloy AA7075-T6 and titanium Ti-6Al-4V. Increased fatigue life was also noted in AISI316 stainless steel, which showed increases in fatigue life of 1.7x. While fatigue life in all cases improved, the efficacy of LSP was shown to be material dependent.

Workers exposed to certain inhaled dusts may show increased levels of nonspecific airways responsiveness (AR). In some studies, cigarette smokers have also been reported to have increased levels of AR. As part of an ongoing study, we compared the results of preshift methacholine inhalation challenge, spirometry, and smoking and occupational histories, in 191 under-ground bituminous coal miners (M) and 215 non-mining control workers· (C) . All M and c were selected to have normal baseline% predicted FEVI (PPFEV). Mining tenure was recorded as years worked underground (YRUG) and at the coal face (YRFC). AR was assessed as the% decrease in FEVI from baseline divided by the dose of methacholine delivered. M reported similar years smoked (YRSM) but fewer pack-years* (PY) than c~ Overall, both increasing YRSM and PY were associated with more AR*. Smoking C* but not M showed increased AR with increasing PY. In smoking and nonsmoking M, baseline AR and PPFEV showed no association with YRUG. The level of AR was inversely related to YRFC*, possibly representing selection away from dustier jobs. AR was inversely correlated with PPFEV*. "The oscillating cup viscometer has become a dominant technique to measure the viscosities of high temperature molten metals. Unfortunately, the viscosity estimation model from the observed logarithmic decrement and period of the oscillation is very complicated. There are still large discrepancies of viscosity estimation values between using different measurement facilities and using different viscosity estimation models for a same molten metal. The purpose of the paper is to evaluate the accuracy of an oscillating cup viscometer in Auburn University. Two well known viscosity estimation models, Roscoe's and Torklep's equations, are compared and discussed. The theoretical literature for the fluid flow inside an oscillating cup is reviewed and a more accurate working equation for the Auburn oscillating cup viscometer is developed. Some design parameters of the oscillating cup viscometer, which directly affect the accuracy of viscosity estimation by using the working equation, are discussed. In addition, applications and experimental measuring data are presented in the paper for several different commercial alloys, such as aluminum alloys: A319, A356 and A201, nickel-base super alloys: In713 and In718, and casting irons, C40 Gray Iron and Ductile Iron.1 IntroductionThe oscillating cup viscometer is the most important and has been most frequently used in viscosity measurement for high temperature liquids [1-4]. The principal advantages of this technique over others are its mechanical simplicity and the ability to measure the time period and amplitude decay with great precision. In the viscometer, a high temperature liquid (such as a molten metal) is contained within a crucible suspended by a wire to form a torsional pendulum, which induces torsional oscillation motion. This motion is damped primarily by viscous dissipation within the viscous liquid inside the cup. The viscosity of the liquid can be calculated by an analytical or numerical solution ofthe equations of motion of the oscillating cup system."

The use of nitrogen in molybdenite flotation circuits is a relatively new concept utilized by only a few mines around the world. This paper briefly discusses circuit chemistry and the reason for its success. It follows the entire testing process which resulted in a sodium hydro-sulphide dosage reduction from 18.5 to 4.4 lbs/ ton (9250 to 2200 g/t) through to the final installation of an inert gas generator which will produce reagent savings in excess of one million dollars annually. A description of the various types of nitrogen generators commercially available is included.

"The delivered price of any mineral is the determining factor in converting untapped resources into economic resources. Transporting the minerals from the mine to the market plays a significant part in the total package. The expansion of the Western minerals industry in the last ten years has been paralleled by improved transportation systems to reduce cost, increase accessibility of resources and get the minerals to market in the shortest time possible. A review is made of developments, such as unit trains, complex multi-modal systems and containerized transport, over the last ten years, with specific movement outlined. The total transportation package of land transport, port and terminal facilities, and water transport, where needed, is stressed. As the volume of minerals movement expands, increasingly sophisticated and integrated transportation systems will have to be utilized. The development of solids pipelines and other possibilities is outlined."

The environmental problems arisen from ground vibration and air blast have been faced and discussed frequently in various industries such as mining, construction, quarry, pipe line etc. where blasting is unavoidable operation. Structural damage due to ground vibrations creates great socio-economic problems for mine and quarry management as well as for the people residing in its vicinity, therefore in bench blast design, not only the technical and economical aspects, such as block size, uniformity and cost, but also the elimination of environmental problems resulting from ground vibration and air blast should be taken into consideration. With the general trend towards larger blasts in mining and infrastructure excavation, ground vibration and air blast problems and complaints have significantly increased. With increasing environmental constraints on the levels of disturbance induced by blasting operations upon nearby residents, there is an increasing need to be able to design cautious blasting with greater precision, therefore determination of maximum amount of explosive per delay for a certain distance especially in large blasts is of great importance for the elimination of these environmental problems. In another word, prediction of ground vibration components is extremely important for the minimisation of the environmental complaints. Estimating of particle velocity and other components of ground vibration with reliable approaches will give important facilities to the blasters. Although many studies had been carried out to isolate environmental problems induced by blasting in the past, a general reliable formulae has not been established yet. Due to restrictions on the complexity of ground motion, blasting and test site factors, experimental studies are still necessary for each site to minimise environmental issues. This paper presents the results of ground vibration measurements carried out during the excavation activity for contruction of an organised industrial region located nearby Istanbul in Turkey. The major rock type is granite that is encountered at this site. Within the scope of this study, in order to predict peak particle velocity level and produce a site-specific propagation curve for this site, ground vibration components were measured for blast events during bench blast optimization studies over a long period. In blasting operations; ANFO (blasting agent), gelatine dynamite (priming) and delay detonators (firing) were used as explosives. While the parameters of scaled distance (charge quantity per delay and the distance between the shot and the station) were recorded carefully, the ground vibration components were measured by means of two different vibration monitors for every event. Then, the data pairs of scaled distance and particle velocity were analyzed. The equation of scaled distance extensively used in the literature was taken into consideration for the prediction of peak particle velocity. At the end of statical analysis and evaluations an empirical relationship with good correlation was established between peak particle velocity and scale distance for this site.

Exxon is reclaiming an 80-hm2 (200¬acre) Wyoming uranium tailings basin in accordance with US Nuclear Regula¬tory Commission (NRC) requirements. The reclamation plan is designed to control the tailings and their radioactive emissions for at least 1000 years. Rigorous modeling and analyses of potential erosion by wind and water were used in planning. The use of riprap was minimized and the need for long¬term reclamation maintenance was eliminated. The resulting design is simi¬lar to regions stable from erosion cre¬ated by nature. The concepts used in the design and implementation have wider reclamation application. Highland history Exxon operated the Highland uranium operations from 1972 until mid-1984. Open pit and underground operations mined the roll front, sandstone ore body. The 2.5 kt/d (3000 stpd) mill employed conventional crushing, grinding, sulfu¬ric acid leach, CCD, SX, precipitation, and drying circuits. The mill produced 10 Mt (11 million st) of tailings. An¬other operator began commercial scale in situ leach operations in 1988. The tailings basin was constructed by deposition of mill tailings in a natural ravine dammed with a 30-m (100-ft) high by 1050-m (3400-ft) long clay core earthen dam built entirely downstream of tailings. Figure 1 shows the layout of the tail¬ings basin in 1984. Tailings were de¬posited along the dam face on the east side of the basin as well as in the west end and along the south edge until the early 1980s. This left a deep water pond in the middle of the basin. The deep pond was largely filled with tailings during the last four years of mill opera¬tions by the construction of two tailings causeways and the operation of a float¬ing tailings line. The pond water volume was mini¬mized by recycling tailings water to the mill and by operating a 32-L/s (500¬gpm) evaporation enhancement spray system during the last few years of mill operations. Regulatory requirements Several conceptual tailings basin rec¬lamation plans were prepared during the mine life. In September 1984, Exxon began preparation of a detailed plan in response to an NRC request. Water, Waste and Land Inc. (WWL) of Fort Collins, CO was selected to help pre¬pare the plan that was submitted to the NRC in December 1984. The design had to meet the require¬ments found in NRC regulations (NRC, 1985). These were based on regulations prepared by the Environmental Protec¬tion Agency (EPA, 1983) at the man¬date of federal law (UMTRA, 1978). The NRC regulations contain strict primary standards and a somewhat more flexible set of secondary standards. The primary standards include requiring that: • radiation from tailings be reduced to background levels; • radon gas emitted by the tailings be reduced to 20 pCi/m2/s from the surface of the reclaimed tailings pile; • tailings not be dispersed into the environment; and • these conditions endure without routine maintenance for at least 200 years and for 1000 years to the extent reasonably attainable. The lengthy time requirements pre¬sented a large engineering challenge. Radon is a radioactive, chemically inert gas with a 3.8 day half-life. It is released from uranium tailings by the radioactive decay of radium, which, in turn, is a radioactive decay product of uranium. Radon emissions from ura¬nium tailings can be controlled with an earthen cover thick enough that the radon gas decays to its solid, short-lived radio¬active daughters before the radon dif¬fuses through the cover material into the air.

Understanding the variability of sulfur and calorific value in coal seams is critical to planning mining operations and marketing the mined coal. In this study, statistical and geostatistical techniques were used to explore the underlying spatial trends present in a large coal deposit. Eight prediction models for the sulfur content of the coal seam were developed. Six of the models were created using geostatistical techniques, while the remaining two models were created using other techniques. The performance of each model was examined by conducting cross validation exercises. The results of the study showed that very pronounced trends and anisotropies were present in the sample data, which had to be accounted for in the modeling. The study found that a cokriging model using sulfur and ash is the best prediction model for predicting sulfur content in this coal reserve.

The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health and the Stillwater Mining Company worked cooperatively with the Montana Bureau of Mines and Geology to develop a system that would collect seismic data at the Stillwater and East Boulder mines. The purpose was to obtain baseline information on the magnitude and location of mining-induced seismicity to determine if the mines needed multi-channel in-mine monitoring systems. Seismic data recorded at field sites near the mines are being telemetered via FM radio through a series of repeaters to a central recording site where the seismic signals are digitized using an Earthworm data acquisition system. The Earthworm system performs several data analysis tasks in near-real time and places raw seismic data, preliminary hypocenter locations, and magnitudes on a Website within 5 min of a seismic event. Such rapid access to seismic data allows personnel at the Stillwater Mine, Spokane Research Laboratory, and Earthquake Studies Office to evaluate seismic events quickly and respond in ways that may improve the safety of mine personnel underground. Installation of the system also broadened earthquake coverage to south-central Montana, a region previously not covered by the seismograph network.

The investigations of the Leningrad ruining lilstitute on this problem are carrying out in the following main directions: 1) The analysis and study of contaminants migration at particular sites of mining development; 2) The working out of theoretical and me- thodical basic principles of aquifers migration tests; 3) The work- ing out of methods of the forcasting of groundwater pollution pro- cesses; 4) The theoretical and uethodical substantiation of hydro- geological observations of groundwater pollution processes; 5) The wort ing out of the measures at the groundwater control and their rational use at the particular sites of mining development. The research that have been carried out by the present moment have covered the wide range of wining and geological conditions -- as from the point of view of specific genetic types of water-be- aring rocks (porous, fissured and fissured-porous), as well as from the point of view of pollution sources (surface waste water basins and underground basins of non-standard water) and the cha- racter of the latter&apos;s migration (tracers, physically neutral ef- fluents, heavy or light ones). The combination of specialized mi- gration tests and observations carryed out at uoayi, sites, as well as the following ar~,alysis o:i the data of field study allowed to get useful theoretical, methodical and practical results on the all directions above mentioned, ns the summing up of these results the author proposed the concept of controlled ground :ester polluti on. This conception is based on three whales" - groundwater self- purification, engineering prevention measures and ground-water monitoring correlated with each other by succes i.vely refined (ac- cording to the observation data) hydrogeologicZl forecasts.
