"The High Pressure Acid Leach (HPAL) plant of Taganito HPAL Nickel Corporation (THPAL), located in Taganito, Philippines, with a nameplate capacity of 30,000 Ni-t/year started commercial operation on October 2013. The plant load was smoothly ramped up and it achieved monthly production equivalent to 33,000 Ni-t/year in 2016. Partial improvement of the plant capacity for the achievement of 36,000 Ni-t/year, as evaluated from the current operation progress of each system is planned for 2017. In this paper, aside from presenting the progress of the plant ramp-up, research and development activities such as the reduction of nickel loss and the improvement of filtration capacity which was achieved by particle size control of ZnS precipitates in the Zinc Removal system are also discussed.INTRODUCTION Taganito HPAL Plant Project History of THPAL Taganito HPAL Nickel Corporation (THPAL) was incorporated in August 2008, as a joint venture of three (3) companies, namely Mitsui Corporation with 15% share, Nickel Asia Corporation (NAC) with 10% share and Sumitomo Metal Mining Corporation (SMM) with a controlling stake of 75%. Aside from its capital share, NAC’s Taganito Mining Corporation (TMC) supplies the ore for the HPAL plant located in Taganito, Claver, Mindanao, Philippines. The objective of THPAL is to produce 30,000 MT of nickel and 2,600 MT of cobalt as mixed (Ni/Co) sulfide by treating nickel laterite ore in the Philippines and exporting to Japan as raw material for SMM’s Niihama Nickel Refinery (NNR) for the next 30 years. In other words, 1.15 wt% of nickel in ore is refined to 99.99 wt% nickel in electrolytic nickel. The mixed (Ni/Co) sulfide is shipped to NNR and SMM provides the technology and management personnel to THPAL plant as well as sulfuric acid which is the main reagent for HPAL process. Figure 1 shows the location of THPAL and current relationship between the stake holders.The Characteristics of THPAL Plant In terms of plant design, a 2-train system is applied for the HPAL circuit considering the reliability of the process, facility and avoidance of whole plant shutdown due to HPAL troubles. The technical data, operation know-how and improvements gained from the successful operation of Coral Bay Nickel Corporation (CBNC) which was established in April 2002 were reflected in THPAL’s plant design. As for the H2S plant, a more economical design was considered which is different from CBNC."

"The $106 million Olmsted Approach Walls Project, completed in the spring of 2004 by Massman Construction Co., Kansas City, MO, is one phase of a new $1.4 billion Corps of Engineers locks and dam facility located at Mile 964 on the Ohio River, approximately 17 miles (27.4 km) upstream of its mouth at the Mississippi River. When completed, the Olmsted Locks and Dam (Figure 1) facility will replace two aging locks and dams (Locks and Dams 52 & 53) built in the 1920’s, and produce an estimated $600 million annual economic benefit to the nation through reduced lockage time and operation and maintenance costs. PROJECT OVERVIEWThe Olmsted Approach Walls Project consisted of “in-the- wet” construction of four fixed nose pier structures, four floating concrete approach walls, one fixed wall and related underwater excavation, grading and stone placement. Over 12,000 tons (11,000 tonnes) of structural steel and pre-cast concrete elements, up to 335 tons (304 tonnes) in weight, were safely erected during the project.To support these massive structures, the Louisville District of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers teamed with INCA Engineers, Inc., Bellevue, WA to design thirty seven 10’ (3m) diameter shafts (cast-in-place steel-shell piles) capable of maintaining elastic behavior below ground while resisting barge impact loads, extreme head-on collisions from runaway tows, and environmental forces from river current, wind, and seismic events.The shafts (typically 150’ (45.7m) in length) were founded 100’ (30m) into the riverbed through alluvium, a very consolidated fine sand and clay Cretaceous soil, and finally into a hydrothermally altered rock. Thirty seven shafts were installed under open river conditions at the site, a group of four shafts at each nose pier-pylon location (Figure 2), and 21 at the fixed land wall. Due to difficulty in achieving the required casing tip elevation the team developed a design modification that was successfully implemented for 27 of the shafts.Concurrent with the work at Olmsted, eleven pontoon segments for the four floating approach walls were constructed at a graving yard in Paducah, KY, developed by Massman Construction Company specifically for the project. While the pontoon geometry varied, the pontoons averaged 350’ (107m) in length, 40’ (12.2m) in width and weighed 4,500 tons (4,082 tonnes). The longest of the four walls, at 1,700’ (518m) was comprised of five interconnected pontoons."

The Search Minerals Foxtrot project in Labrador is a surface deposit enriched in the highly sought after heavy rare earth elements. Early metallurgical work investigated beneficiation of the rare earth content of the Foxtrot resource using flotation, gravity separation and magnetic separation. The concentrate was then processed by acid baking and water leaching to produce a REE leachate for purification and recovery. The Search Minerals Direct Extraction Process was developed through bypassing the beneficiation process and directly acid treating a coarse crushed ore material prior to water leaching. The result is a simple, low risk technical process for direct recovery. Concurrently, the treatment of the water leach solution was modified to produce a high grade (98.9% total rare earth oxide) product for refining.

"The redox behavior of copper species in an ""ammonium imide"" room temperature molten salt was examined in order to clarify the applicability of the salt to the electroplating media of various metals. Trimethyl-n-hexylammonium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)- amide (TMHA-Tf2N), having an electrochemical window of 5.6 V (50 °C), and corresponding copper(II) salt were synthesized. In TMHA-Tf2N media monovalent copper ion, Cu(I), was stable and Cu metal was oxidized, or corroded, in the presence of Cu(II) species. Cathodic electrodeposition of copper metal and anodic dissolution of it were, thus, one-electron reaction and their current efficiencies were almost 100%.IntroductionElectrodeposition of metals from aqueous solutions is an important soft process for manufacturing thin-film materials, surface finishing, and extractive metallurgy. However, the electrodeposition of base metals, such as zinc, chromium, and nickel, from aqueous media inevitably accompanies hydrogen evolution, which lowers the cathodic current efficiency of metal deposition. Since the electrodeposition of aluminium, titanium, and rare earths from aqueous media is actually impossible due to their largely negative redox potentials, nonaqueous media such as aprotic organic solvent and high-temperature molten salts have been employed for the electrodeposition of these metals. Room temperature molten salts (RTMS),1, 2) or room temperature ionic liquids, have also been developed as a promising electrolytes for the electrodeposition of base metals. In this field, chloroaluminates of alkylpyridinium or alkylimidazolium cation have been well investigated for aluminium3) or alluminium-alloy4-5) electroplating media. On the other hand, in order to avoid high hygroscopicity arising from the use of aluminium chloride, attempts have been made to combine the alkylimidazolium cations with fluorine-containing hydrophobic anions, e.g. BF4-,6) CF3SO3- (TfO-),7) (CF3SO2)2N- (Tf2N-),8) and H(HF)n-ions,9) and investigated for electrodeposition media.'°) Recently, a new series of RTMS consisting of tetraalkylammonium cations and Tf2N- anion, sometimes abbreviated as TFSI- anion, was found independently by MacFarlane et al.11, 12) and Matsumoto et al. 13) This type of RTMS, which is commonly named ""ammoniumimide"" salt, has a wide electrochemical window of ca. 5 V and, thus, the RTMS seems to be suited for practical application as a solvent for the electrodeposition process. In this paper, we report the electrochemical behavior of copper species in an ammoniumimide RTMS, trimethyl-n-hexylammonium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)amide (TMHA-Tf2N)."

The Furbero oil field lies in the Gulf coastal plain of Mexico between the important ports of Tampico and Vera Cruz and about one-third of the distance between the two points from the latter (Lat. 20" 22' N., 97" 30' W. Gren.). It is in the State of Vera Cruz, about 14 miles west by south of the village of Papantla in the canton of the same name, and is the most southern of the developed oil fields of the Tampico-Tuxpam region being a distance of 50 miles south by east from the Potrero del Llano field and 42 miles in the same direction from the Alamo field. The field has been developed by the Oil Fields of Mexico Co. and is in the midst of a large block of lands owned or leased by them. Communication is through the port of Tuxpam with which it is connected by a narrow-gauge railway and 6-in. pipe line some 52 miles in length. This field is of more than ordinary interest since it represents a type of oil deposit hitherto unknown. So far as I am aware, no other commercially valuable deposit of oil is known to occur under conditions of accumulation similar to those found here. The igneous nature of the so-called 'sand' encountered in drilling was not recognized until a number of wells had been drilled; and it was not until recently that the geological relations of the sill or laccolith, which gives rise to the accumulation of oil, were known and the so-called 'anticline' was known to be, in part at least, the result of igneous intrusion. Geological surveys in this general region were made in 1900-1901 by W. H. Dalton and in 1907-1909 by P. C. A. Stewart, F. W. Moon, Leonard V. Dalton, and Dr. Max Muhlberg. More recent surveys have been made, however, under the direction of the author, by E. L. Ickes, B. C. Belt, B. Hartley, and Harve Loomis. Notes of the earlier examinations were not available with the exception of the report by Dr. Muhlberg who apparently first recognized the true nature of the Furbero intrusion. Since 2001, CANMET Mining and Mineral Sciences Laboratories (MMSL) have worked with Falconbridge Ltd. (now Xstrata Nickel) to evaluate trends in the strength development and water retention properties of a novel backfill material for underground mining, called gelfill. Between 2004 and 2006, extensive laboratory tests were undertaken under the leadership of the Deep Mining Research Consortium (DMRC). This paper compares results obtained from samples circulated through a mini-flow loop and a simple mixer. Although many parameters were studied over the last five (5) years, this paper focuses on the investigation of the effect of the mixing method, sequence and time, and the curing environment on strength development and water retention of gelfill. It was found that binder should be added as a powder to the mix in the mini-flow loop, and that mixing slurry in the mini-flow loop as opposed to the mixer generally yielded higher strengths. The practical implications of these observations are the subject of an on-going underground trial that will compare laboratory and in situ properties of regular slurry fill with gelfill.

"In 2007, Noront Resources Inc. discovered the high grade nickel copper PGE deposit in northwestern Ontario in a region now known as the Ring of Fire. Since the initial discovery, Noront has advanced the Eagle¹s Nest Project and in September 2012 released a feasibility study for the development of the Eagle¹s Nest Project. This paper summarizes the results of this recent study and outlines additional work planned in the next stages of project development. INTRODUCTIONThe following paper summarizes the findings of the recently completed feasibility study on Noront Resources Ltd.’s Eagle’s Nest Project. The feasibility study was compiled into a NI 43-101 report by Micon International. This paper is intended to summarize the major technical findings and for complete information, interested parties can find the entire NI 43-101 report at www.norontresources.com or on SEDAR.LOCATIONThe McFaulds Lake project area, which includes the Eagle’s Nest deposit, is located at approximately UTM 5844000 N and 547000 E, and between approximately 52º42’ and 52º50’ N latitude and 86º06’ and 86º24’ W longitude, approximately 250 km west of the community of Attawapiskat on James Bay and 575 km northwest of Timmins. The closest all-season accessible community to the McFaulds Lake project area is Nakina, 300 km to the south, where there is a paved airstrip, in addition to all weather road and railroad access (see Figure 1).The First Nations communities of Webequie and Ogoki/Marten Falls are located 90 km west and 120 km south southeast of McFaulds Lake, respectively. Both communities are served by regularly scheduled air service, primarily from Thunder Bay; both Thunder Bay and Timmins serve as support centres for the James Bay communities and the exploration projects in the area."

Past experience has shown that the penetration characteristics of the 10-mm nylon cyclone used on approved personal sampling equipment are significantly different from those determined in the laboratory using a nonpulsating flow source. The Bureau of Mines has developed and recommended a modification to presently approved equipment that will alleviate this difference. However, as a result of this modification, a new relationship for converting respirable dust concentrations measured with approved personal sampling equipment to equivalent concentrations as measured with an MRE instrument will have to be established. This Bureau of Mines report describes the underground sampling program conducted to establish a new factor for converting respirable dust concentrations measured with personal sampling equipment, modified with a recommended pulsation damping device, to an equivalent concentration as measured with an MRE gravimetric dust sampler.

In view of the circumstance that very few important changes have been made within the last 15 or 20 years in the equipment of rod and wire mills, the description of a new process introduced by Grenville Mellen, of LleweIIyn Park, N. J., to take the place of the present laborious system of producing rods of lead, zinc, brass, copper, aluminum, etc., may be interesting to members of the Institute. This new process consists in the production of cast rods at one operation in a small continuous casting machine. The hot liquid metal is transferred from the melting crucibles directly into an endless chain of mold blocks in the machine, where solidification takes place, and the rod comes out continuously in a solid form at one end as long as the molten metal is supplied. The operation of these mold blocks so as to produce a solid rod of uniform structure constitutes an important part of Mr. Mellen's invention. The machine (Figs. 1 and 2), 12 ft. in height over all, 2 by 3 ft. in horizontal cross-sectional area, and 6,000 Ib. in weight, has a framework of cast iron, holding in position two endless chains of mold blocks, which are made in sections and join in center alignment. The mold orifice is made up of these mold sections, into which the liquid metal flows. The molding chains are composed of steel blocks, grooved on one face to form the molding cavity, and linked together with flexible joints. Each block is carried on four rollers which guide the chain around the end sprockets and carry it in its course through the machine. The accuracy of alignment requisite to the production of a perfect rod in the mold groove formed by these sections is secured by careful machine work, and by building the four ways, down which the alignment takes place, so that two of the sides are fixed permanently, whiIe the opposite sides are held to their position by spring pressure. The guides carrying the molds, while in casting position, are water-cooled square tubes. The length of this machine is somewhat indeterminate. A certain amount of both time and cooling surface is required to solidify the metal jn the mold; and one may either use a long molding chain and run it fast, or a shorter chain and run it correspondingly slower. This circular outlines salient facts regarding the manganese-ore industry in the United States and the world. It is founded chiefly upon published information available in the literature of the subject. The Bureau of Mines has in its files additional, more detailed data upon many of the topics presented very briefly here, and will endeavor to assist the mineral industries and public by giving further information in response to individual inquiries. The Bureau will welcome comments, criticisms, and contributions of data that may assist in making later additions of this circular more accurate, or in developing more fully its mineral files pertaining to manganese. In reporting the production of manganese-bearing ores in the United States the following classification has been adopted by the Bureau of Mines: (1) Metallurgical-grade ores, under which have been classified manganese ores containing 35 percent or more of manganese used in the manufacture of iron and steel, ferruginous manganese ore containing 10 to 35 percent of manganese, manganiferous iron ore containing 5 to 10 percent of manganese, and manganiferous zinc residuum; (2) battery ore; (3) fluxing ores, under which are classified ores that may contain a few ounces of silver and are rich enough in manganese to make them valuable chiefly for fluxing purposes in nonferrous smelters; and (4) miscellaneous ores, under which are classified the ores shipped to brick manufacturers, glass makers, and manufacturers of manganese chemicals.

The aim of the present work is to study the effect of annealing on the vibration damping capacity of high-chromium (16%) ferromagnetic steel. The alloys were prepared from raw materials of 99.9% purity melted in a high frequency induction furnace under high vacuum. The samples were heat-treated in vacuum at various temperatures (800 to 1200°C) for 1 hour followed by slow cooling (120°C/h). The inverted torsional pendulum method was used to evaluate the vibration damping capacity. The results indicated that the vibration damping capacity of the alloys is influenced by annealing and there exists a critical annealing temperature after 1000°C. The damping capacity increases quickly below the critical temperature since the magnetic domains move more easily.

"Non-producing mineral properties include those at various stages of exploration, properties at the pre-feasibility or feasibility stage, properties with currently uneconomic mineral resources, and past-producers. The market approach is applicable to all these types of non-producing mineral properties. Income approach methods such as discounted cash flow and option pricing are generally not applicable to properties at the exploration stage, but may be applicable to non-producing mineral properties with defined mineral reserves or mineral resources.The value of a non-producing mineral property depends on its perceived potential for the existence and discovery of an economic mineral deposit. The potential, in turn, depends on a number of factors which must be considered when choosing market comparables. These comparability factors include such items as geology, mineralization, stage of exploration and results, mineral resources, location and geography, and political jurisdiction. The date of the market comparables must be within a reasonable time period of the valuation date of the subject property. Although it is difficult to find good market comparables because of the unique nature of mineral properties and the small number of transactions, these difficulties are compensated for by analyzing a number of transactions on similar properties to develop a range of values for the subject property.For valuation purposes, market comparables can be expressed in terms of total property value, value per unit area (e.g., $ per hectare), or value per unit of metal contained in mineral resources (e.g., $ per ounce of gold, or $ per pound of copper). The market comparable value can be used to estimate the value of the subject property by using the total property value, unit area value or contained metal value."

As part of Inco's $115 million Fluid Bed Roaster SO2 Abatement Project, a new weak acid treatment plant (WATP) was constructed to treat bleed solutions from the Copper Cliff Smelting Complex gas-cleaning circuits. The WATP produces an iron-arsenic co-precipitate, termed "basic ferric arsenate" (BFA), which requires disposal in an environmentally acceptable manner. Following analysis of many potential options, the short-listed disposal alternatives were: A) Co-disposal of the BFA?gypsum sludge with rock tailings, a portion of which would be used in mine backfill, with the remainder being sent to the tailings area, and B) Co-disposal of BFA?gypsum sludge with pyrrhotite tailings in the tailings area. Testwork showed that the addition of BFA?gypsum sludge to mine backfill samples increased the uniaxial compressive strength (UCS) of the backfill for most samples, especially those at lower binder content ratios. Extensive analysis was conducted on samples taken from the Copper Cliff tailings area, where BFA?gypsum sludge from Inco's Copper Refining Electrowinning Department has been co-deposited with pyrrhotite tailings since 1990. Pore water samples from these areas contained very low arsenic concentrations, indicating that the arsenic had remained stable in that environment. Ultimately, co-deposition with pyrrhotite tailings was chosen as the preferred option for the disposal of BFA?gypsum sludge from Inco's new WATP.

The Minera Ojos Del Salado (?MINOSAL?) concentrator is located 20 kilometers southeast of Copiapo, Chile and processes copper ore provided by its Santos and Resguardo mines at a capacity of 4,200 tip (4,620 stpd). Phelps Dodge acquired the majority interest in MINOSAL in 1982. The principal incentive for this purchase was the exploration potential of the property. At that time, the concentrator plant was a small, antiquated installation with a capacity of 674 t/d (740 stpd). In 1982, the majority of the ore was produced from the Santos and Resguardo mines, but custom ores of copper, silver, and gold were also treated. The acquisition occurred at a crucial time in the copper business, since the price had fallen to nearly $0.50 per pound. In 1985, Phelps Dodge purchased the outstanding interest in MINOSAL and acquired 100% of the property. Today, after numerous improvements and two expansion projects, the concentrator is an interesting combination of old and new equipment. The regrind mills, for example, have been in service for about 50 years, while the ceramic concentrate filter represents the latest technology.

INVESTIGATIONS IN 1936In 1936 the Industrial Pulmonary Disease Committee of the Medical Research Council investigated both clinically and radiologically a group of fifty workers who had been exposed for a number of years to the inhalation of alumina in the reduction factory of the British Aluminium Company. The results are shown in Table 1.They also considered the sickness records of all the workers (Hill, 1936), as compared with those in other parts of the factory (Table 2).

Electrolytic deposition at 1,000 ° C in an electrolyte essentially consisting of 7 parts sodium pyrophosphate , 2 parts sodium chloride , and 1 part sodium tetraborate yielded tungsten of 99.9 percent purity . Scheelite concentrates containing 25 to 73 percent WO, and varying quantities of iron , lime , and silica were used as feed materials for the electrolysis . The metal contained less than 0.01 weight - percent each of iron , calcium , silicon , aluminum , carbon , and oxygen . Modification of the electrolyte permitted deposition of equal - quality metal from scheelite concentrates containing higher quantities of iron , calcium , and silica . The electrolytic separation of molybdenum and tungsten was accomplished by minor variations in the operating procedures .

Mineralogy and physico-chemical characteristics of a nickel hydrometallurgical residue and recovery of iron-bearing minerals by flocculation-magnetic separation were studied. The results show that the nickel residue is super-fine and fraction less than 0.045mm reaches 85.4%. Ferrous minerals are chiefly magnetite and ferruginous glass. Magnetite accounts for 31.7% and exists as free magnetite. Ferruginous glass is of multicomponent amorphous substances with low-iron grade but strong magnetism, and accounts for 39.9% of total iron minerals. Addition of flocculants increases granularity and magnetic force of fine iron-bearing particles and improves iron grade and recovery. The tests with flocculation separation show that a concentrate assaying 56.68% Fe with 81.72% recovery was obtained in a magnetic tube. A concentrate with 56.92% iron grade and 67.96% recovery was obtained by flocculation-magnetic separation with a magnetic cylinder.

Australian coals tend to be young in geological age and high in ash by world standards; preparation of the coal before marketing is almost universal. On the basis of float and sink data from 39 locations in the Eastern Australian coalfields, the coals are placed in four categories representing increasing difliculty in their washability characteristics. These seem to be related neither to the geological age nor the geographical position of the deposit and Hunter Valley coals, for example, span all categories. The influence of crushing on the washability of Australian coals is briefly considered and from limited data it is concluded to be appreciably smaller than for British or North American coals. A strategy for the float and sink analysis of Australian coals is proposed and the influence of washability characteristics on current trends in the selection of separating processes for coking and steaming products is discussed.

Metso?s Process Technology and Innovation group is a world leader in mineral processing consulting. A significant amount of this consulting work involves process integration and optimization (PIO) studies, which include investigating the effects of drill-and-blast design and implementation on downstream processing. Critical to these studies is the ability to track specific ore into, and through, the plant. To increase the accuracy of this ore tracking, Metso Process Technology and Innovation (PTI) developed a system to track ore using a radio frequency identification (RFID) transponders technology designed to allow tracking of ore from its source through blasting, run-of-mine (ROM) pads, crushers, intermediate stockpiles and, finally, into the concentrator. The system is called SmartTag. Since its commercialization in 2007, SmartTag has been used in the majority of PTI?s consulting projects, and several permanent systems have been installed worldwide.
