The current wave of interest in this topic is the result of increased use of titaniferous ores or ilmenite in blast furnace burdens for the purpose of repairing hearth damage. The titanium compounds that promote deposition of ?patching? materials in blast furnaces are the cause of downstream problems in the steelmaking shops. Steelmakers historically have objected to significant amounts of titanium in hot metal (>0.10 % Ti) for several reasons: 1) accretions caused by the TiC.TiN needles that float out of the iron as it cools in transit and in transfers make the accompanying slag sticky and crusty, causing problems in desulfurization and increasing time and Fe yield loss at the subsequent raking, 2) defensive measures have been taken in treatment, such as use of argon for carrier gas, but without technical rationale for this approach, 3) difficulty in removal of the ladle slag by the raker, with subsequent sulfur addition to the vessel charge, and 4) transfer into the BOF and/or formation of a very corrosive TiO2 containing acid slag during the early part of the BOF blow which, in addition to causing lining damage, results in loss of sulfur removal capability by the vessel slag. Based on a conceptual analysis of the metal-slag-atmosphere interactions during transfer ladle desulfurization treatment, a mechanism is postulated for the apparent effectiveness of the use of argon in reducing the deleterious effect of titanium and an alternate technique, possibly more effective, is proposed. As probably the use of argon causes increased exposure to atmospheric oxidation of the titanium carbonitrides contained in the ladle slag, the same benefit can be obtained by use of either oxygen or an air blast to oxidize the noxious reaction compounds. Validity of the concept has been demonstrated in a pilot plant setting. These issues, and related effects on testing the hot metal, are examined in detail with reference to the literature and plant and laboratory experience.

The Mine Safety and Health Administration?s Roof Control Division responded to a massive ground failure at an underground marble mine in northern Georgia. The ground failure occurred in a benched area that had been abandoned in the early 1990s. It involved the failure of an estimated 19 pillars, in conjunction with a massive roof fall of an undetermined extent that was at least 60 ft high. Pillars in the benched area had been mined nominally 40 x 40 feet to a height of 50 feet ft, with 40-ft mining widths, although it seems likely from measurements and accounts from mining personnel that pillars were even smaller than intended. Average overburden depth was 500 ft, and the rock mass was characterized by three sets of intersecting geological discontinuities that not only defined very blocky conditions that were conducive to pillar spalling and volume loss, but they were also adversely oriented in such a way as to cut diagonally through pillars at a high angle. The recently released S-Pillar software from NIOSH was used to determine pillar safety factors in the failure area and indicated that pillars were undersized for the conditions. S-Pillar was used to assess pillar stability in active areas to evaluate the likelihood of experiencing similar collapses in the future. S-Pillar correctly identified the pillars in the bench area as having been at risk for instability, in light of their ultimate failure. A two-dimensional finite element model was used to evaluate the possible stages of failure and to assess the likelihood of continued failure in the benched area that might affect more distal mine openings. Although stone mines are generally characterized as having more forgiving conditions than those found in softer sedimentary rocks, the failure shares some characteristics with domino-style massive pillar collapses experienced in coal and trona mines. First, the minimum dimension of the benched area approached 350 ft; second, the pillars defined by benching had small width-to-height ratios (0.8), and; third, the pillar failure area was slightly greater than 4 acres. The massive pillar collapse and associated roof fall illustrate the importance of incorporating pillars that have been properly sized for depth and for the final bench height. Furthermore, the designed dimensions must be adhered to during the actual mining process. Finally, the importance of understanding the geological conditions and their effect on the rock mass is critical.

The occurrence of fluorine in the copper/gold concentrates produced by Ok Tedi Mining Limited has provided a series of challenges to metallurgists since 1988. Although fluorine is distributed throughout the gangue minerals contained within Ok Tedi ores, itsÆ presence in talc and phlogopite (naturally floating fluorosilicates) has proven to be the predominate sources of fluorine in the final concentrate. Initial treatment for the fluorosilicates consisted of the use of a carboxy-methyl cellulose depressant added to the flotation cleaners. This was superceded in 1998 with the installation of a fluorine reverse flotation process for the removal of naturally floating fluorosilicates from the final concentrate when the fluorine content of the final concentrate exceeds smelter-defined trigger points. The fluorine reverse process is similar to by-product molybdenite concentrate production in that sodium hydrosulfide is used to depress copper/gold flotation whilst allowing the fluorosilicates to float. The process was installed in two parallel modules (to match the existing grinding/flotation modules at Ok Tedi), each consisting of a closed rougher/cleaner circuit configuration. Both rougher and cleaner cells are Jameson Cells from MIM Process Technologies, with the selection based on both processing characteristics and available construction space. This paper discusses both the nature of fluorine in-, and its removal from-, Ok Tedi copper/gold concentrates.

As part of a comprehensive risk analysis which was carried out into the effectiveness of the water barrier between South Deep and Randfontein Estate mines, the potential threat posed by large seismic events was assessed. The study covered several aspects. Firstly, an estimate of the maximum credible earthquake was obtained from a probabilistic analysis of the regional seismicity of the previous 25 years. Allowance was made for ?reservoir-induced? effects by increasing the estimate of the size of the maximum credible earthquake from ML= 5.1 to ML= 5.5. Based on available knowledge of the geological structure, the possibility of such an event occurring in the vicinity of the barrier pillar was estimated. The possibility of substantial damage to the barrier rock mass, resulting as a consequence of a large event, was assessed. The likely damage to the concrete control plugs installed in five tunnels that penetrated the barrier, which might result from a ?near-miss? by the largest possible seismic event or from a ?direct hit? by a smaller event, was also considered. It was concluded that there was a negligibly small possibility that the maximum credible earthquake could occur close enough to the barrier, and in such a manner, as to cause any damage to it or to the plugs in the tunnels passing through it. The possibility of serious plug damage occurring as a result of a ?direct hit? by as maller event was slightly greater, but still sufficiently remote as to be of no practical concern at all.

Several refractory sulfide and carbonaceous gold ores were examined to determine whether microbial pretreatment could be used to enhance gold recovery. Test samples were biologically leached using unique, thermophilic microorganisms to solubilize iron sulfide minerals. Gold recovery from sulfide ores and concentrates was enhanced following pretreatment with the thermophiles; responses varied widely for the individual materials. Although bioleaching had little effect on the preg robbing characteristics of the carbonaceous gold ores, cyanidation of the bioleached residues yielded higher gold recoveries than cyanidation of the native ore. By combining bioleaching with abiotic processes designed to inhibit preg robbing, gold recoveries of 83-98% were obtained from carbonaceous ores yielding 10-50% gold recovery by direct cyanidation.

The Bureau of Mines performed a study to determine optimal locations for longwall face methane monitoring equipment. Longwall face ignitions continue to be a concern to the U.S. coal mining industry. Gains in ignition control technology have been somewhat negated by advances in longwall productivity. More reliable, heavy-duty longwall face systems generate higher production rates and increase methane liberation rates. These rates will likely continue to rise in the future as further coal production increases occur. Efforts will continue in the areas of methane drainage, methane containment, and methane dilution. In addition, more effective face methane monitoring is needed. As technology continues toward automated longwall panels, the importance of monitoring for methane at the shearer becomes even more significant. Since the primary face ignition source is the shearer mining machine, the Bureau ran tests to determine the best location to take methane readings on the shearer. This information, in conjunction with data obtained from field studies, provides a knowledge base for selecting optimum face methane monitoring locations.

The metallurgical processing industry is in the midst of a hydrometallurgical revolution with mining companies looking for low cost, energy efficient and environmentally friendly technologies for processing sulfide ores and concentrates. The Intec Copper Process is one of the most advanced of these technologies and has the potential to greatly change the way copper concentrates are treated in the future. Specifically, the Intec process has the ability to be built on a small scale and at mine sites while being much more economic than conventional smelting. Intec Copper has constructed a I tonne of copper per day demonstration plant in Sydney, Australia designed to verify metallurgical and operational performance. This paper will describe the process in more detail and provide preliminary results of the process based on the plant's performance. It will also compare the Intec Copper Process with a few of the competing technologies and evaluate the relative economic merits of Intec.

1. The Investigation shows that there are six coal beds of major importance in McDowell County from the standpoint of present production - Pocahontas No. 3, Pocahontas No. 4, Pocahontas No. 5, Sewall, Beckley, and Pochontas No. 6 - and five beds of minor importance - Iaeger, Douglas, Welch, Pocahontas, No. 9, and Eagle. The Pocahontas No. 3 bed contains the largest remaining, known reserves. 2. Known measured, and indicated reserves in all beds, based on a minimum thickness of 174 inches and on 1,800 tons per acre-foot of coal in place, are estimated at 2,217 Trillion short tons as of January 1, 1951. Of this total, 1,731 million short tons are in beds 28 inches and more thick. Areas in each bed were omitted from the estimate because available data relative to the bed characteristics are too meager to make an estimate that conforms with the definitions of measured and indicated coal adopted for this study. Should future drilling or development prove reserves in these area, such reserves should be added to he total estimated reserves.

ASIDE from the John Fritz Medal, in which the Institute participates through its representation on the John Fritz Medal Board, the Institute itself has four awards it may make annually, as follows : the Robert W. Hunt Medal and Prize, the J. E. Johnson, Jr., Award, the James Douglas Medal, and the William Lawrence Saunders Medal. ROBERT W. HUNT MEDAL AND PRIZE The partners of Robert W. Hunt established a fund which was presented to the Institute at a fitting ceremony on May 27, 1920, to establish an annual medal and a sum of money to be awarded under the following rules 1. The award shall consist of two prizes: first of a gold medal, second of a sum of money; a certificate to accompany each prize, The money prize shall not be awarded to a member over 40 years of age, but under unusual circumstances, both prizes may be allotted to one person provided that he is not over 40 years of age. In general it will be understood that the Committee shall award the money prize to the younger men, rather than the medal. 2. The awards shall be made not oftener than once a year to that person or persons contributing to the Institute the best original paper or papers on iron and steel. The scope of the term "iron and steel" shall be determined by the sub-committee considering the awards. In general, papers dealing with the practical side of the subject have preference over those dealing with the theoretical side in recognition of the fact that Captain Hunt's main contributions to the industry have been in the improvement of production and quality of material. 3. A sub-committee of three to five, including the Chairman of the Iron and Steel Committee, shall be appointed by the Iron and Steel Committee annually to adjudge the award subject to approval. 4, The awarding committee shall submit its report to the Iron and Steel Committee at its October meeting, and the award shall be certified to the Secretary of the Institute in time to permit the presentation to be made at the Annual Meeting of the Institute, 5. Single crystals of aluminum, brass, and copper oriented for (100) and (110) slip were extended at 25°, 400°, and 600°C in simple shear. Aluminum specimens oriented for nonoctahedral slip began to shear at a higher critical resolved shear stress than specimens oriented for octahedral slip. Parabolic stress-strain curves were obtained from zero strain. The initial rate of parabolic hardening was lower for specimens sheared on the (100) plane in a close-packed direction <110>, than for specimens sheared in a nonclose-packed direction <100>. metallographic evidence, however, showed that all slip traces could be explained in terms of (111) <100> slip. All attempts to cause nonoctahedral slip in copper and 70-30 a-brass single crystals were unsuccessful. Instead of shearing, the crystals bent, allowing {111} type planes to come into action. NONOCTAHEDRAL slip in aluminum has been reported under three different conditions: first, as the main mode of slip in tension experiments at elevated temperatures;&apos;-&apos; second, as the main mode of slip in direct shear experiments at room temperat~re; and third, as a minor mode of deformation, i.e., as cross-slip, in tension, shear, and bicrystal experiments at room and elevated temperatures."-l2 However, as far as the author knows, nonoctahedral slip has not been reported in either copper or 70-30 a-brass. The present study was undertaken to determine whether nonoctahedral slip could be obtained in aluminum, brass, or copper at room or elevated temperatures when the shear stress was approximately constant over the cross-section, a maximum at the center, or a maximum at the surface. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE A detailed description of the crystal preparation and shearing apparatus has been given previo~sly. Cylindrical crystals 1/2 in. in diam and 8 in. long were grown from the melt in a temperature-gradient furnace. The aluminum contained 0.001 pct Zn, 0.001 pct S, and 0.001 pct Fe; the 70-30 brass contained 0.015 pct Pb, 0.001 pct Fe, 0.01 pct Ni, 0.02 pct Sn, and 0.005 pct Se; the copper was certified OFHC of 99.98 pct purity. All samples were electropolished prior to testing. The shear apparatus was a modified Bausch type. The strain sensitivity was 4 x lob4 Load was applied by clamping the rods attached to the shear plates in an Instron tensile machine. The rate of loading was 0.02 in. per min. In all cases a 1/8-in. gage length was used. For the tests performed at 400° and 600°C the shear plates, collars, and rods were made of stainless steel. These elevated-temperature tests were performed in an argon atmosphere. A) Aluminum at Room Temperature. Values of a and ß for the various slip planes and slip directions investigated are shown in Table I where a is the complement of the angle between the specimen axis and the slip direction, and ß is the angle between the specimen axis and the normal to the shear plane. The shear stress is a function of a (assuming ß - 0);10 when a is less than 27 deg, the shear stress on the slip plane for which the specimen is oriented has a maximum at the center of the crystal; at a = 27 deg the shear stress is constant across the slip plane; for a greater than 27 deg the shear stress is a minimum at the center. Fig. 1 shows the stress-strain curves for specimens cut from crystals 1, 2, and 5, which were sheared on the (010) plane in the [loll direction at room temperature. The Cleveland Mine has an annual ore production of 400,000 tonnes at a grade of 0.79 per cent tin and 0.30 per cent copper. It is achieved by an open stoping method, mechanised overhead sub-level benching. The operation is trackless with a ramp access from all working places to the surf- ace. Broken material is loaded from the stope and development headings into diesel trucks and hauled to the surface crushing plant.

Potassium, is one of the three basic plant nutrients along with nitrogen and phosphorus. There is no substitute for potassium compounds in agriculture; they are essential to maintain and expand food production. Potash is found throughout the world in both soluble and insoluble forms. It is only the soluble forms that are economically attractive to process, primarily chlorides and sulfates, with potassium chloride by far the most important potash salt. Sylvinite ore, a mechanical mixture of sylvite (KCl) and halite (NaCl), is a natural mineral of potassium. This ore is found in commercial quantities in the Permian sin region near Carlsbad, New Mexico. Vast tonnages of high-grade de, low-clay-content ores have been mined and concentrated during the past 40 years; however, these deposits are rapidly being depleted leaving high-clay, low-grade ore reserves of over 135 million tons. These ores, containing 13 to 22 percent K20 and 3 to 8 percent clay slimes; cannot be effectively processed by current commercial flotation methods. The present concentration processes for potash minerals in Carlsbad relate mainly to ores containing 1 percent or less of clay-slimes with a K20 content of 20 to 25 percent to yield products to meet the requirements of the agriculture market, namely, 95 percent KC1 equivalent to 60 percent K20. Discoveries of potash ore in Saskatchewan, Canada, have shifted the emphasis on expansion outside the United States. Presently, the American companies are looking to Canada for future growth, expenditures, and expansion. Four of the seven companies operating near Carlsbad are produces of Canadian potash despite the large investment sons required for shaft sinking and milling installations.

"Underground operation.In its broader sense the term ""mining"" is applied to all processes whereby raw materials are taken from the earth to be used as sources of mineral products. In a more restricted sense ""mining"" is applied to underground operations as contrasted with open pit work designated as quarrying. The tern is used in the restricted tense in this paper; for it relates to the exploitation of limestone deposits by modern methods of underground operation rather than by open pit methods.Present tendency toward miningIt may seem to some readers that a paper on mining limestone will find little general interest among lime plant operators, for only a limited number of them have yet resorted to this means of procuring raw materials. It is noteworthy, however, that a growing tendency exists toward underground operation, for one by one quarry owners are faced with increasing difficulties in open pit operation. It seems desirable, therefore, for operators to keep closely in touch with this gradual change in process, to inquire into the underlying causes, to compare costs, and to study the effects of the change in method on subsequent steps in calcining the stone to produce lime."

The apparatus was of a modified Sieverts type1&apos;2 with a reaction tube designed to function also as the cell component of an oxygen pressure gage. The reaction tube assembly is shown in Fig. 1 and described in Table I. The main body is a 1-in.-OD 15 mol pct calcia-stabilized zirconia tube. The ground-glass joint, g, the male part of which carried a prism for optical pyrometer use, was connected to the remainder of the Sieverts apparatus. The calibration of the cell (at its 1000°K operating temperature) for internal oxygen pressures (PO2in) in the range 0.2 to 10 9 atm was made against internal air pressures measured by mercury manometer and McLeod gage. At very low po2in values down to l<Tn atm the performance was checked by comparing pQ calculated from electromotive force measurement when the apparatus was filled with a) pure CO gas and b) a CO-CO2 mixture of the ratio CO-CO2 = 1:0.398, with Po, values calculated from the equilibrium constants of the following reactions at 1000°K:

High metal prices and new world trade standards and accounting for environmental liability in financial disclosures are creating markets for metals commodities that are produced using ?green technologies?. A promising "green" gold leaching system uses a polysulfide based lixiviant which is non-toxic and non-polluting. Laboratory testing has demonstrated selective gold extraction rates comparable to those of cyanide. The polysulfide lixiviant is a dilute aqueous solution which can be inexpensively produced from readily available chemical reagents and even mining wastes. The reagent system is self-buffering and maintains the optimal chemical environment for leaching. Treatment of residual leach solutions is not necessary because the lixiviant itself is not toxic, and breaks down as the system equilibrates. Simple closed system boiling is used to recover gold from process solutions. The polysulfide lixiviant can then be readily renewed and recycled back into the system, forming a closed loop system that conserves reagents and energy which minimizes operating costs. Economic projections have shown that the system can be used profitably for standard ore types and grades.

Unit operations currently ignored because of their costs, will become mandatory to coal plant designers and operators to ensure maximum energy recovery and sulfur reduction in the entire coal stream. In anticipation of this need, the U.S. Department of Energy, The Ohio Coal Development Office, EPRI and others are sponsoring research in several areas of coal preparation, and coal plant designers are beginning to consider more innovative techniques as they configure their flowsheets for plants of the future. INTRODUCTION The two unit operations in cut-and-fill stoping that would benefit most from increased mechanization are drilling blastholes and moving broken ore to the ore¬passes. Drilling in current practice is done with hand¬held jackleg and stoper drills. Broken ore is commonly moved from the face to the orepass by a small slusher. This type of equipment can be easily moved through the raises. Hand-held drills have a slow drilling rate and require one operator for each machine. Drilling can be done much faster by small jumbo-mounted machines as two or more drills can be operated by one miner. Load-haul-dump (LHD) units move broken ore from the face to one or more orepasses at a much faster rate with less loss and dilution than slushers. These units are mobile and may be used at more than one place during a shift. The problem which must be overcome in applying this higher degree of mechanization is the restricted means of access inherent in current practices. Cut-and¬fill methods are usually applied to mining veins that are narrow, irregular in dip and strike, or where ground con¬ditions require the support of sand fill. The mechanized equipment which is needed to accomplish high produc¬tion cannot be raised or lowered through raises without being disassembled. A jumbo which will give the desired performance would be mounted on a rubber-tired carriage with a diesel engine for propulsion. Twin hydraulic booms run by a small air motor would carry pneumatic drills. Over¬all dimensions of the unit would be about 8 m (26 ft) in length, 1.6 m (5&apos;/z ft) in width, and 1.6 m (5&apos;/z ft) in height. An LHD of the desired capacity would be rubber¬tired and either diesel or electric-powered. The overall dimensions of a 2.3-m (3-cu yd) unit will be about 8 m (26 ft) in length, 1.8 m (6 ft) in width, and 1.5 m (5 ft) in height. It will weigh about 12 700 kg (28,000 1b). It can readily be seen that conventional raises can¬not handle this size equipment. The most desirable means of access enables equipment to be driven into the stoping areas. Ramps can enter the stope by being driven upward in the vein walls or by being developed in the vein on top of the fill as the stope advances. This ramp system not only permits the use of rubber-tired equipment in multiple working places but also enables its removal for repairs without component breakdown. In the proposed method, as in conventional cut-and¬fill stoping, sand fill will replace the mined-out ore. By constructing an inclined timber floor at one end of the stope, a ramp can be maintained on top of the fill and advanced as the stope is advanced cut by cut (Fig. 1). The ramp is, therefore, developed during the stoping process and is only driven as a tunnel when rising over and around the sill and crown pillars. A stoping section consists of three blocks of different geometric shapes. The first and last blocks to be mined will be triangular in the plane of the vein, and the blocks between will have the shape of parallelograms (Fig. 1). The first block will develop the initial ramp by breast stoping and filling to the ramp floor (Fig. 2). The ramp will need to be completed through to the next level be¬fore stoping of the subsequent block can begin. The subsequent blocks are mined by back stoping with the next ramp being developed at the other end of that block (Fig. 3). The length of each subsequent block can be varied without changing the slope of the ramp. As the new ramp is developed, the previous ramp is filled along with the stope cut. Access up and down is maintained through the stope. The final block is again breast stoped as no new ramp will be developed at the end line for jumbo egress. Boreholes provide ventilation between levels as well as utility access. They can also provide a secondary escapeway for personnel during periods of development. These boreholes would be located about 3 to 4.5 m (10 to 15 ft) in the footwall and spaced about 183 m (600 ft) apart along the vein. The orepasses are spaced about 61 m (200 ft) apart in the vein. This spacing allows not only a short tram for the LHD unit but also provides surge capacity for the ore between haulage trains. These passes are raised from the haulage levels. As development progresses, the raises are driven through the sill pillar, and then car¬ried in the fill as stoping progresses. Ventilation and utilities can be maintained through an orepass when it is not needed for ore. The end line orepasses are intended for this purpose as well as for personnel emergency egress. Overall dimensions and criteria assumed to illustrate the ramp method of access in a highly mechanized cut¬and-fill stope are: haulage level spacing of 61 m (200 ft); ramp gradient of 17%; average dip of approximately 1.57 rad (90°); initial stope length of 358 m (1177 ft); subsequent stope length of 179 m (588 ft); average stoping width of 3 m (10 ft) ; sill pillar thickness of 3.6 m (12 ft); crown pillar thickness of 1.8 m (6 ft); bored raises of 1.5-m (5-ft) diam; and cribbed orepasses of 1.2 x 1.2 m (4 x 4 ft) through the sill pillar and 1.2 m (4 ft) square inside the cribbed portion. Pillars are used in various forms in underground mining. For several decades pillar design has been an issue in both soft and hard rock underground mining. The major use of pillars is in room-and-pillar type mining. Pillars are critical structures in the production levels of block cave mines. With most mines leaning towards the use of block caving for ore extraction today, pillar design has become even more important. Empirical pillar design is popular. The use of numerical modeling is becoming more common in the design of underground mine pillars. A critical review of both the empirical and numerical modeling approaches to the design of underground mine pillars reveal some fundamental flaws. In general, pillar design approaches often assume the pillars are vertical, and are subjected to pure compression. Pillar failure criteria are then based on this assumption. Most papers on numerical modeling for pillar stability assessment use vertical pillars. This paper shows that where pillars are not subjected to pure compression the empirical pillar design approaches are inadequate, and that when using numerical models for the assessment of pillar performance, more care is needed in the determination of the average pillar stresses. The practice of relating field scale pillar strength to laboratory scale intact rock strength determined from conventional laboratory compression tests in empirical design equations is misleading when pillars are inclined or subjected to compressive and shear stresses. New data is added to the hard rock empirical pillar stability chart, and it is shown that it is misleading to conclude that failure of pillars with width to height ratios greater than 2.3 should not be anticipated. New empirical pillar design charts are presented for pillars at various degrees of inclination for different ko-ratios.

"Recovery of gold from refractory ores and concentrates presently constitutes one of the most important, challenging, and exciting areas of R&D activity in the gold processing industry. New technologies are being tested for the treatment of refractory gold materials, some of which have been advanced to the level of commercial operation. In this paper, some recent technological developments in the hydrometallurgical processing of pyritic matrix-refractory gold ores are highlighted. Key operational steps of each of the alternate hydrometallurgical technologies are analyzed and potential advantages and drawbacks are identified. The processes which are reviewed are: hydro chemical oxidation, biochemical oxidation and pressure oxidation. INTRODUCTIONOver the years the term ""refractory"" has been applied in gold ore processing to denote situations in which straightforward cyanidation failed to yield high gold recoveries. A number of mineralogical and chemical factors may be responsible for this ""refractoriness"" problem. A systematic classification of the different options for their treatment has been discussed in a recent review paper. In this paper, the pretreatment of the submicroscopic gold encapsulated within the matrix of pyrite and arsenopyrite minerals is considered. This type of gold is the ultimate refractory material because complete breakdown by reaction of the host mineral structure is required.The method which has been traditionally applied for the treatment of pyritic-type refractory gold ores is an oxidation roast (single stage or double stage depending on the As content) of a flotation concentrate to produce a porous calcine, the latter being more amenable to cyanidation. Despite its established practice, oxidation roasting is not considered particularly attractive with today&apos;s standards for high product recovery and clean environment. Roasting is known to be very sensitive to heating parameters and feed composition and deviation from optimum conditions can result in reduction in permeability which is translated to incomplete gold liberation."
