Excavations in rock are commonly supported with wire mesh, shotcrete, wire mesh and shotcrete in combination, and shotcrete reinforced with various types of fibres. Wire rope lacing and various types of straps are additional forms of support installed over the above types, to cope with severe conditions. These support systems are very important items of ?membrane? rock support. With the recent development of several types of thin sprayed linings, the importance of membrane support is likely to increase in the future. In this paper, a wide range of mechanisms of membrane behaviour and mechanisms of loading of membranes, is described. The concepts of membrane components, which are single membranes that may be used on their own as rock support, and membrane systems, which are combinations of more than one membrane component, are introduced. Different situations have different requirements of membrane support, and differences between civil engineering and mining requirements are highlighted. With the different basic requirements in these two areas, the requirements of rock support are correspondingly different. A thorough understanding of the mechanisms of behaviour of the different types of membranes, and the different mechanisms by which the membranes are loaded, is essential before a selection of appropriate support can be made, before appropriate design methods and calculations can be determined, and before appropriate performance test methods for membranes can be defined. The material in this paper contributes towards the understanding of membrane support behaviour.

"Lately various voltametric methods have gained increased attention as an analytic tool in hydrometallurgy. Voltammograms with mercury drop electrodes or glassy carbon electrodes provide information about the electrocrystallization of cathodic deposits and allow calculation of kinetic data by means of characteristic parameters like the peak potential and peak current and their variation with the voltage scanning rate.Cyclic voltammograms are also suitable for identification of reaction sequences. Voltammograms with carbon paste electroactive electrodes containing metal sulphide additions reveal information about the dissolution behavior. The stripping voltammetry can be applied to analyze metal ions and organic additives (e. g., thiourea) in extreme low concentration. Typical application of the various methods studied with microcomputer controlled measurement system are explained by examples selected from copper hydrometallurgy.IntroductionThe use of electroanalytical methods in metallurgical process control can be dated back to the starting period of industrial copper refining, when the deposition of the metal ions was followed electro-gravimetrically by weighing the electrode with deposits (1). The principles of metal deposition and dissolution have not changed but the methods to follow these phenomena were subjected to noticeable developments and especially the introduction of polarographic investigations by Heyrowsky (2) has greatly contributed to the progress in electro-analysis. A review about the fundamental work on the electrochemical kinetics in earlier time is compiled in a monograph of Vetter (2). With the steady improvements in the instrumental techniques, it is nowadays possible to apply several current and potential modulations for measurements with improved selectivity and sensibility. There is however, still a lack in theoretical interpretation of the data obtained. More theoretical information are already available for linear voltametric methods for systems where reduced as well as oxidized species are dissolved in the electrolyte (4, 5). The seismic wave produced by an explosive is very important in blasting. A true understanding of the wave is only important when considering possible structural damage to buildings located near the blast, but it is also of primary importance when considering rock fragmentation. Because of the importance of the seismic wave to fragmentation, a finda-mental study of the seismic wave and its effect was made at the Cananea Consolidated Copper Co.'s mine at Cananea, Sonora, Mexico. Strain gages were used to measure the strain in the rock when nearby explosive charges were detonated. The variance in the circuit voltage caused by changes in the resistance of the strain gage was measured with an oscilloscope and recorded with a Polaroid camera. CONFINED DRILLHOLE CHARGES To record the seismic wave from a confined drillhole explosive charge, a gage was cemented to the bottom of a 4-in diam drillhole. The horizontal gage hole and nine horizontal charge holes were drilled perpendicular to the center line of the 2-39 drift and 4 ft above the floor. The gage hole was 29 in. deep, and the charge holes were drilled so that each bottomed 1 in. deeper than the gage hole. The gage was installed with its axis horizontal and parallel to the 2-39 drift. The charge holes had the following horizontal distances from the gage: hole 3, 3 ft; hole 4, 4 ft; hole 5, 5 ft; hole 9, 9 ft; hole 10, 10 ft; hole 14, 14 ft; and hole 15, 15 ft. Figs. 1 and 2 show the relationships of the gage and the charge holes. Charges of 80 pct special gelatin, which weighed 50, 100, and 150 g were exploded in the charge holes and the seismic waves were recorded. All charges were stemmed with 200 g of mud and detonated with an electric blasting cap. Fig. 3 shows the recorded seismic waves. The reflected components of the waves were too weak to be objectional on these records. Table I shows the data taken from the wave forms. The approximate average velocity of a wave with a 9-ft travel distance was 12,900 fps. Since different charge weights were used, it was necessary to scale the data. The scaled maximum compress ion-strain data and the scaled maximum tens ion-strain data are shown in Figs. 4 and 5, respectively. Figs. 6 and 7 show the strain-distance data from Figs. 4 and 5 converted to a 1-lb charge. The results showed that the wave consisted of an initial compression pulse followed by a tension pulse. The amplitude of the tension pulse approached the amplitude of the compression pulse as the distance between the gage and the shot increased. The decay rate of the seismic wave is very important in the evaluation of the blasting characteristics of a rock. When high-amplitude stresses are produced, as in rock fragmentation, the rate of decay is much more rapid than when small amplitude stresses are produced. In underground mine blasting, the burdens are usually not greater than 6 ft and the decay is very rapid. A series of tests were conducted by the Bureau of Mines to determine the best means of reducing noise generated by the detonating cord that is utilized for trunklines in quarry blasting. Ten different types of detonating cord were tested and evaluated for their acoustic qualities. The results of the investigation showed that noise levels produced by "low-core-load-per-foot" detonating cord "not covered" were lower than those produced by "high-core-load-per-foot" detonating cord covered with 6 inches of unconsolidated material.

MINING asbestos ore by caving at Thetford Mines, Quebec, has been described in the Transactions of the Canadian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy in papers presented by the staffs of The Asbestos Corp. Ltd., in 1934, and Johnson's Co. Ltd., in 1941. The production by caving prior to 1949, in round figures, has been 14,500,000 tons of ore by The Asbestos Corp. and 5,500,000 by Johnson's Co. They are the only caving operations in asbestos at the present time. Since it has been the subject of a number of technical papers, this contribution is offered as a review of progress. Some introductory information seems appropriate, for few members of the American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers are familiar with the mineral, or how asbestos deposits differ from others in caving characteristics. Asbestos is found in peridotite, a basic intrusive rock irregularly altered to serpentine and erratically fractured, well enough to cave in bulk, but leaving many blocks of solid ore of all sizes scattered through the deposit. Chrysotile is the variety of asbestos produced in Canada. Its fibers are the most valuable commercially, having a good proportion of long fibers, strong, silky, flexible, and suitable for spinning. The fibers occur in all lengths, from the microscopic to 3 in., or more, the shorter are more abundant. Their values depend on length combined with other qualities noted above. They occur as veinlets filling fissures in the peridotite, with crystals compactly arranged in parallel across the cracks. They are sometimes lightly frozen to the walls but the partings are distinct, often marked by particles of magnetite adhering to the fiber ends. Sometimes they break away from the rock in slabs an inch or more in thickness. In wide fissures the fibers are not always continuous, the "broken fibers" being separated by lines of parting with occasional scattered grains of magnetite, which is an injurious mineral to be elirninated when possible. In addition to the chrysotile ''Cross fiber," some "slip fiber" is found in fault fractures in limited quantities of less valuable character. With the exception of the Asbestos Corp, ore, in which the content is said to be more uniform, asbestos is eccentrically distributed through the peridotite. It is the general impression that the higher grades are more often found in hard rock. There are rich pockets and leaner areas which range down through various grades to minor barren sections. Wholesale mining is necessary to make sure of recovering all the high grade for there are no reliable indications of its existence. Ore selection only appears in constructing assay-grade limits for caving. The mill yield of the Thetford ore body in 1934 was 6 to 10 pct of the ore milled, made up of all classes, with occasional runs up to 15 pct or so. Geologic and technical factors such as coal seam thickness, stripping ratios, roof conditions, partings, faults, and size and geometry of the reserve block greatly impact the availability of Illinois coal for mining. Residential and commercial developments also restrict access to coal reserves in some areas. Despite the collective effects of these factors, large blocks of bituminous coal reserves suitable for efficient, low-cost underground mining remain available in Illinois.

The bioleaching of arsenopyrite, the oxidation of arsenate and the precipitation of ferric arsenate are competing reactions, hence their rates depend on the relative concentrations of the respective species, and the activity of the bacterial culture. Bacterial arsenic resistance may be attributed to the Pst+Pit-mutation and an energy dependent efflux pump. Pst+Pit-mutations result in a reduced uptake of arsenate. This enables the bacteria to survive in solutions in which the arsenate concentration is significantly higher than the arsenite concentration. However, the excretion of arsenate requires energy. Therefore, in the absence of an energy source or during periods of reduced bacterial activity, the inhibitory effect of arsenate may manifest at concentrations to which the culture has been adapted. The chemical ferric leaching rate of pyrite and arsenopyrite decrease with a decrease in the solution redox and may be described using a modified Butler-Volmer equation. The bacterial ferrous-iron oxidation kinetics of L. ferrooxidans also depend on the redox potential, and can be described using a Michaelis-Mententype model modified to account for both temperature and pH. A model developed using the independently determined ferric leaching, and ferrous-iron oxidizing kinetics, has been shown to compare well with the experimental data for the continuous bioleaching of pyrite. An open cast mine on the West Coast of the South Island of New Zealand proposes to remove up to 30 m of overburden to access an ore body neighbouring National Reserve land. Part of the conditions of the mining permit is that no material above natural discharge levels may be released over the Mining Lease boundary onto the adjacent land. In order to meet this requirement, the client has contracted the design and installation of over 2.6 km of high energy dynamic rockfall control barriers. This paper describes how the rockfall hazards were assessed and the rockfall barriers dimensioned. The design involved 2D modelling of over 3000 simulations.   Modelling parameters were calibrated during field trials at a purpose built section of barrier. The resultant energies ranged from 500 to 3000 kJ. The construction phase of the project involved the drilling, anchoring, and installation of certified barriers up to 7 m high in a remote and inhospitable climate with limited machinery access. By exploring best practice in this specialized field of engineering, a novel rockfall hazard mitigation solution was identified.

The San Manuel is a deposit of low-grade disseminated copper ore. It was brought to the attention of the government in October 1942 through an application to the Reconstruction Finance Corporation for a development loan, supported by a report by Henry W. Nichols. Nichols' sampling of two outcrops containing copper silicate and his geologic map indicated that a minable body of copper ore might be developed. The Federal Geological Survey was requested to examine the property. The Survey mapped the geology in March 1943 and cut a few check samples, which substantially confirmed Nichols' sampling of the outcrops and a few shallow workings. The geologists of the Survey recommended some test drilling by the Bureau of Mines. The property was examined by the author and Wm. D. Hughes, associate engineer of the Bureau of Mines on March 22 and 26, 1943, and a preliminary drilling campaign was recommended. Five shallow churn-drill holes totaling 1,480 feet were put down under the supervision of Chas. A. Kumke, one of the Bureau's engineers, from November 23, 1943, to January 13, 1944. This work indicated that the deposit extended deeper than the 350-foot depth attained in the deepest hole and might have very considerable areal extent. Additional funds were allotted, and the drilling contract was extended twice to a final maximum of 17,000 feet with 2,000 feet maximum depth of hole. Drilling was continued by the Bureau of Mines until February 2, 1945, when 15,844 feet of hole had been drilled. The Magna Copper Co. took options on this and adjoining property in September 1944 and commenced drilling with two machines. It also engaged the two contract drills used by the Bureau after it stopped drilling. It exercised its options in August 1945 and organized the San Manuel Copper Corp. to operate the property. That company is continuing to explore the ore body with six churn drills. Thomas Lyon took options early in 1945 on holdings adjoining the San Manuel property on the east and is operating two churn drills. Exploration up to the completion of the last holes started by the Bureau of Mines indicated a block of ore 3,100 feet long, 400 to 800 feet wide, and 500 to 900 feet thick, and averaging about 0.8 percent copper. Subsequent drilling showed that the ore body extends considerably beyond this block. The axis of the ore body strikes about N. 61° E. Copper minerals are disseminated in hydrothermally altered quartz monzonite and monzonite porphyry. Ore outcrops in two small areas over the northeast part of the block. Elsewhere the copper-bearing rocks are capped by Gila conglomerate, which thickens toward the west and south. Drilling showed that the ore is in a thick, tabular body with a steep dip to the south. The ore body lies near the surface in the northeastern part of the block. The south side of the block is much farther below the surface than the north side. There the upper part of the copper-bearing rocks is lightly mineralized, so that the hanging wall of minable ore lies deeper than the base of the conglomerate cap, which thickens southward.

The method of using the bromine process of determining sulphur in steel, described below, is in successful use at the Midvale Steel Works. Ten grams of drillings are weighed out and put into the 1/2-liter flask A, with long neck. The flask is connected with a wide glass tube C', which, in its turn, is connected with the absorption bulbs B, containing HCI, 1.12 specific gravity, and ahout 5 C.C. of bromine. The wide tnbe C causes the vapor to condense and flow back into the flask A during boiling. The bulbs B connect with a long glass tnbe, which may be made to carry off the bromine fumes through a hole in a window, or, better still, through a flue with powerful draught. The connections being made, 100 C.C. of boiling water are run in through the thistle tube T. The air is thus completely driven out of the flask. 100 C.C. of HC1 (about 1.19 specific gravity) are then run in. When the gas begins to run rattler slowly through B, heat is applied until boiling gradually ensues. The steel being completely dissolved, the apparatus is disconnected, and the contents of B rinsed out into a beaker of 100 C.C. capacity, into which a few C.C. of a concentrated solution of BaCI, have been previously introduced. The Oronogo-Webb City-Duenweg district is in the northeastern part of the Tri-State zinc and, lead field. Its metal-mining history dates from the early 1850's. For some years prior to 1918 it ranked as the leading producing area of the entire Tri-State field, but by 1920 most of its mines had been abandoned and allowed to fill with water. Its mine operators had-been attracted, to the newly discovered and richer deposits around Picher, Okla. In 1943, the Orenogo Mutual Mining Co. was exploiting the Oronogo Circle deposit in the northern end of the district, and the Federal Mining & Smelting Co. was preparing to mine on its holdings in the southern part near Duenweg. The area between these two operating units ranked as the largest single block of ore reserves under water in the Tri-State field. In 1942, engineers of the Bureau of Mines, in collaboration with the William Stewart Engineering Co. of Joplin, collected all available mine maps, mine reports, and logs of old drill holes in the inundated area. From a careful study an appraisal of these data, the reserves in the block were calculated at 20,647,800 tons of ore containing 606,440 tons of 60-percent zinc concentrates and 46,970 tons of 80-percent lead concentrates. The ore was estimated to contain 1.76 percent recoverable zinc and 0.18 percent recoverable lead.

Welded deposited chromium carbide overlay’s has been widely used in various branches of welding overlay’s industry related to wear. Characterization techniques are an important tool in the development of chromium carbide overlays resistant to wear, enabling the identification of phases, constituents and defects. In this work one used optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy and energy dispersive spectroscopy on chromium carbide overlay’s deposited by submerged arc welding process. The characterization techniques identified precisely the elements of the overlay’s enabling point of the main cause of the observed defects such as cracks, porosity and clusters of particles known in the industry as " rice crispy" .

Serpentinite is an ultra basic and metamorphic rock consisting mainly of magnesium, calcium and silicon oxides. The rock under study is a host rock of chromite mine located in Andorinha, BA. The objective of this paper is to evaluate the rock's physical and chemical characteristics to be used as an additional fertilizer of acid soils. After comminution, rock samples were submitted to chemical analysis, XRD, SEM-EDS and TGA. Afterwards, particle size distribution was determined. Result analysis confirms that our rock consists mainly of dolomite, calcite and diopside. According to the result obtained, it can be said that the serpentinite rock has promising applications in agriculture for the correction and additional fertilization of acid soils. However, it is necessary to study the characteristics of the rock such as its dangers and toxicity as well as evaluate them according to the legislation for corrective acidity.

This paper reviews the gold mining history and recent exploration activities on a number of beaches in the Catlins area of coastal South Otago. Past mining history and recent sampling indicate the presence of economically significant concentrations of placer gold, as well as anomalous PGM, and various heavy mineral species. A local source for this placer mineralisation is considered a strong possibility, along with a contribution from the Waiau River catchment via longshore drift. Blacksand beds in Jurassic sandstones of the Southland Synclinorium may represent this local source of mineralisation on the modern beaches. The possibility of placer mineralisation extending onto the inner continental shelf is also considered. Further exploratory work is justified, both for in situ Jurassic blacksand deposits, and to delineate mineralisation in the modern beach and inner shelf environment.

"Virtually every article you read on safety has a statement to the effect: “It’s obvious that safety pays”. If it is so obvious, why is it so hard to answer these questions? • How does the Maintenance or Operations Manager convince the Plant Manager to spend money from the annual budget for safety improvements? • How does the Plant Manager influence Corporate to prioritize safety improvements? • How does an engineering firm persuade the owner to spend more on design and equipment up front to reduce risk? There are many cultural and structural reasons why it is so difficult to prove the obvious. In my opinion the main culprits are: the almost universally used ‘Low Bid’ process, variations in reporting incident statistics between industries and countries, and, the Generally Accepted Accounting procedures (GAAP) [or International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS)]. Conventional wisdom is it’s smart not to spend more than you need to meet the minimum regulations and maximize production. But buying on price alone often harms people, degrades the environment, and reduces the company’s bottom line. How can this be? You met the minimum safety requirements and saved money by buying on price. Don’t those savings go right to the bottom line? When you buy on price you get minimum quality, minimum compliance and are often backed corner with no reasonable options to rectify the problems that arise from buying on price instead of buying on long term life cycle cost. Culturally few companies actually ‘walk the talk’. It is trendy to have giant billboards at plant entrances proclaiming world class compliance with quality and safety standards. Annual reports are embellished with safety slogans and sustainability statements. Behind the front gates and the glossy annual reports the message is clear: produce or be replaced. Only a few companies go beyond the window dressing and actually endorse, from the top down, continuously improving their safety culture. Those that do embrace safety, show significant performance advantages over their competition that are reflected in their safety, productivity and environmental records and, ultimately their financial statements and share price. Current accounting (and reward) systems make it unlikely financial managers will accept non-conventional approaches to justifying expenditures on safety because they are driven to report “hard” numbers that can be documented and are within the “GAAP or IFRS Rules.” But in reality, accountants quantify soft or intangible costs all the time in their financial statements. Justifying safety investments is greatly enhanced by quantifying what most financial managers would call intangible costs. Government agencies have no problem assigning intangible costs to justify regulations to improve safety. How many times have you heard that the regulation is justified because the cost to industry is X while the benefit to the society is 2 or 3X? How can they say that without including intangible costs? A jet slurry apparatus has been constructed to test corrosive/erosive wear properties of grinding ball metal. Plain high carbon steel heat treated to a hardness of about 60 RC was used. Slurries of quartz and chalcopyrite ore concentrate were used as the jetting media. Weight loss due to pure corrosion was determined by the linear polarization technique and weight loss due to pure erosion was determined by jetting while cathodically protecting the sample. By comparing the total weight loss with the sum of the weight losses from pure corrosion and pure errosion it was found that there was a synergistic effect between corrosion and erosive wear. Erosive wear rates are given as a function of pH and mineral type.

Several of the decomposition processes that can occur in supersaturated phases in a Ti:11.6 wt pct Mo and a Ti:20 wt pct V alloy have been studied by transmission electron microscopy. The deformation induced "marternsitic phase" in the Ti:Mo alloy has been found to have a bcc or bct structure rather than the previously reported hexagonal structure. The morphology of&apos; the transformed region is a rather complex asserrlblage of twins, twinning occurring in one or more systems; this internal twinning has been found to occur on (112). The w phase is formed in both alloys on aging and is present in the Ti:Mo alloy after quenching. The structure of this phase has been confirmed as hexagonal in both systems, however, differences in morphology and stability are found between the two alloys. Thus in the Ti-Mo alloy the w phase has an ellipsoidal morphology with the major axis lying parallel to <111>ß or [0001]w while in the Ti-V alloy the phase forms as cubes, the cube faces lying parallel to {100}ß or {2021}w Some observations on the particle sizes, volume fraction, and composition of the w phase in the Ti-Mo alloy are listed. The mode of formation of The a phase from the (ß + w) structures is also different in the two alloys. In the Ti-Mo alloy the a phase is formed by either a cellular reaction or by the growth of isolated needles, whereas in the Ti-V alloy the a phase is nucleated at an w:ß interface and grow to consume the w phase. Some of the difjerences in behavior of the w phase are attributed to the mismatch between it and the solute enriched ß matrix in which it forms. MaNY transition elements tend to stabilize the bcc or ß-phase when added to titanium. In general two types of phase diagrams are produced, either a ß-stabilized (ß-isomorphous) system, e.g., Ti:Mo, -Ti:V, Ti:Nb, or a ß-eutectoid system, e.g., Ti:Cr, Ti:Fe, Ti:Mn. In previous papers&apos;-4 the phase transformations in the a-phase and (a + ß)-phase alloys have been described and this work has been extended to ß-stabilized systems. Specifically, transformations in the alloys Ti:20 wt pct V and Ti:11.6 wt pct Mo have been studied; in both of these alloys the ß phase is retained at room temperature when quenched from the ß-phase field. A number of phase transformations can occur in such metastable ß phases and the two alloys were chosen to include most of the transformations reported for ß-stabilized systems. We list these possible phase transformations below. Ti:11.6 Mo quenched from >780°C to retain the ß phase: a) The w phase can form on quenching.5 b) Martensite can be produced by subzero cooling or deformation. Two martensite habit planes have been reported in Ti:Mo alloys; (334)ß and (344)ß=6 c) On aging at temperatures <-550° C the w phase is formed before the a-phase.5,7 d) On aging at temperatures >550°C the a phase is formed.7 e) The martensite can be tempered. It has been reported that the a phase rather than the ß phase is precipitated during tempering.&apos; Ti:20V quenched from >660°C to retain the ß phase:9 a) At aging temperatures <260°C separation into two bcc phases occurs. b) The w-phase is produced prior to the a phase on aging at temperatures <-400°C. c) At temperatures 2400°C the a phase is formed directly. T-T-T diagrams describing the temperature and time regimes for the formation of these phases have been published7,9 for a Ti:12 pct Mo and a Ti:20 pct V alloy. We have attempted to investigate these transformations using transmission electron microscopy, however thin foils undergo a spontaneous transformation in all conditions except the equilibrium (a + ß) structure. This transformation has been reported previ0usly10,11 and we will comment on its morphology and nature in the various sections of experimental results. EXPERIMENTAL The compositions in wt pct of the two alloys investigated were: Ti:11.6 Mo, 0.100 02, 0.006 N2, 0.0015 H2 Ti:20V, 0.0574 O2, 0.0111 N2, 0.005 H2 These alloys were cold-rolled to 0.020 in. thick sheet. Specimens were heat treated in vacuum or in inert gas at temperatures >500°C and in a circulating air furnace at temperatures <500°C. Thin foils were prepared using standard techniques, described in detail previously." Dark field micrographs were obtained using high resolution technique. RESULTS Martensitic Transformation in Ti:11.6 pct Mo. Detailed study of the deformation induced martensite is not possible due to a spontaneous transformation which occurs near the edge of thin foils as shown in Fig. 1. Similar transformations have been observed in iron-" and copper-base13 alloys as well as other titanium alloys, but some observations specific to the Ti:1l.6 Mo alloy are listed below. a) The boundaries of these transformed regions are glissile and move under the influence of the electron beam during examination. b) Selected area diffraction indicates the transformed regions have the same structure as the matrix, being separated by tilt boundaries. At Buffington Station, Gary, Ind., Universal Atlas Cement operates fourteen 8 x 101/2 x 155-ft cement kilns in mill 6 and two 11 x 360-ft kilns in the Harbor plant. The No. 11 and 12 kilns in mill 6 are equipped with Manitowac recuperator sections. This report describes studies in measuring exterior shell temperatures on several of these kilns and the development of a traveling radiation pyrometer with certain novel features. Preliminary Work: At first various temperature-sensing devices were placed on the steel shell: 1) crayons with calibrated melting points, 2) colored paints with temperature-calibrated pigments, 3) aluminum paints with temperature-calibrated binders, and 4) metal-stem dial thermometers. The colored paints and aluminum paints failed to indicate the temperatures correctly. The crayons and thermometers did indicate fairly correct temperatures, but it proved impossible to apply enough of these on the shell to detect all the potential areas where hot spots might develop. Furthermore, considerable labor was required to apply these sensors and read the temperatures. Consequently no further work was done with these devices. Formation of Hot Spots: In the burning or clinker-ing zone of a cement kiln, the thickness of the protective coating and thickness of the brick govern the amount of heat transmitted to the steel kiln shell. Usually the protective coating consists of 4 to 8 in. of fused cement clinker. The formation of a hot spot is usually caused by loss of coating? that is, localized areas of the coating become thin or fall away from the refractory. This is generally caused by excessive temperature in the burning zone over a fairly long period of time. It may also be caused by a sudden thermal change in the burning zone. Variations in raw feed composition and in feed rate require changes in the fuel and air rates, and when these are not appropriately altered, conditions may develop in the kiln that will result in loss of coating. Luminescence on the kiln shell indicates that a hot spot has developed to a point that usually alters the refractory&apos;s thermal conductivity properties. When this thermal weakness zone occurs in the burning zone of the kiln, constant vigilance is required to protect it by maintaining proper coating. Even so, it has been the writers&apos; experience that within a period of several days to about four weeks the hot spot usually recurs with greater severity. This necessitates shutting down the kiln and re-bricking the affected area. One of the prerequisites of a good burnerman is the ability to maintain a protective coating despite the many variables in operation. When he knows that it is getting thin or that an area has dropped off, he reduces the firing rate and kiln speed and brings feed into the affected area in an effort to rebuild the coating. But when powdered fuel is burned, the atmosphere of the kiln may prevent the burnerman&apos;s observing the condition of the coating closely at all times without taking off the fire. It is not considered good practice to do this frequently, as it imposes a thermal shock on the coating and upsets operation of the kiln. To help the burnerman scan the shell of the kiln along the burning zone, therefore, a radiation pyrometer, connected to a potentiometric recorder, was mounted on a slowly moving steel cable. The theory of operation, construction details, and adaptability of the radiation pyrometer are included in an excellent monograph&apos; and also in a textbook.&apos; Shell temperatures of the Atlas Cement kilns were measured with a Brown Instruments Div. low intermediate range Radiamatic unit, of range 200" to 1200°F, and a circular chart Electronik potentio-metric recorder, of range 500" to 1000°F. In Bulletin 59095M the supplier publishes standard calibration data (millivolts vs degrees Fahrenheit) for this radiation pyrometer, These data, however, apply only to flat surfaces having emissivities of unity. Calibration of Radiation Pyrometer for Use on Curved Surfaces: When applied to surface temperature measurements, the radiation pyrometer reading depends on the nature of the surface, the material of which it is composed, and also to some extent on the temperature of the surroundings. Although the present radiation pyrometer is designed to give a calibrated response under ideal (black body) conditions when used commercially, it must be calibrated empirically. The calibration procedure, given below, follows that described by Dike (Ref. 1, pp. 38-39). The Fe-TiC composite powder was synthesized in situ by carbothermal reduction of ilmenite. The standard Gibbs energy minimization method was used to calculate the equilibrium composition of the reacting species. The effects of the reaction temperature (1300 °C - 1500°C) and milling time of precursors on the Fe-TiC conversion and powder morphologies were investigated using XRD and SEM method. The synthesized products showed that composite with iron matrix and titanium carbide as a reinforced phase was formed.
