Stirred milling technologies have firmly established themselves in concentrator circuits as energy-efficient alternatives to tumbling ball mills. High and continued increases in electricity costs, coupled with the ever-increasing power consumption by primary grinding circuits due to declining head grades of ore-bodies, provides a compelling case for these technologies. Additionally, the ability to successfully deploy stirred milling in coarse grinding applications extends the range of use in concentrators, thus increasing the opportunity matrix for energy optimization in a flowsheet. This paper therefore details methodologies and strategies that can be applied to evaluate the optimum stirred milling solution for different concentrator applications. These methods and strategies will focus specifically on the two major stirred mill machine types; namely, gravity-induced (VERTIMILL? grinding mill and Nippion-Eirich tower mill) and fluidized (SMD, Isamill?, Knelson-Deswik mill, etc. ). Finally, case studies from circuits across industry and laboratory tests will be used to illustrate the energy benefit from the use of stirred mills.

Structures formed during ductile deformation have been reactivated during the later brittle mineralisation process. Two generations of folding are classified as: early recumbent megascopic FI folds and FI shears which transpose the hinge regions, and later upright F2 folds. S1 is folded about F2 folds which contain axial planar S2 crenulation cleavage. Vergence relationships between S1 and bedding indicate that many of the mineralised structures occupy sites of FI folds which have acted as plumbing systems for later gold mineralisation (eg Blackwater mine). The Globe-Progress gold mineralisation is localised by a major jog formed by sinistral strike-slip movement on two FI fault segments and mineralisation also occurs in smaller jogs along strike (eg Sir Francis Drake, Happy Valley-Merrijigs, Cumberland).   The lodes of ribbon quartz which exploit the FI shears and local bedding planes, are inferred to have mostly formed after the peak of metamorphism, possibly related to the emplacement of Carboniferous granites. This was followed by a sequence of vein deposition and wallrock alteration which consists of quartz-As/Fe sulphides ? carbonate - stibnite ¦ trace base metal sulphides and Bi-sulphosalts ? illitic clay/sericite-chlorite. Gold at Globe-Progress is mainly encapsulated in arsenopyrite. At Blackwater, free high fineness gold occurs in partings in lode quartz with late sericite-chlorite. The above sequence of events is comparable to that encountered in many intrusion-related gold systems throughout the Southwest Pacific region. There is a spatial relationship between gold mineralisation and dykes variably described as diabase, dolerite or lamprophyre. Alkaline rocks occur in many Pacific rim and older goldfields and may possibly be related to a magmatic source for gold mineralisation.

Thermodynamic calculations based on the ideal system NiO - Fe203 - H2(g) - CO(g) - H2O(g) - CO2(g) show that it is not possible to selectively reduce nickel oxide in the presence of hematite because ferronickel is the zero-valent nickel-containing product. The calculations show that temperature, reducing atmosphere composition and oxide to reductant ratio have a marked effect on the nickel content of the ferronickel alloy and the amount of nickel reporting jn the alloy. The general trends based on the calculations correlltte well with experimental observations.

Welcome to Chicago and to the first North American Rapid Excavation and Tunneling Conference. It is a great privilege for me to serve as the Chairman of the Executive Committee of such a Conference. We are here because of the rapidly mounting interest of technicians the world over in turning the potential use of underground space into sensible and economical benefits to people. This Conference certainly provides a major forum of international importance and scope for the exchange and dissemination of up-to-date knowledge on the technology of underground excavation and tunneling. The discussions will also surely delineate the immediate and longterm challenges we must approach in multidisciplinary force. We must exercise leadership in the problems we are trying to solve. Your program shows the breadth of the technical discussions which are going to be underway here during the three days of this Conference. I am not going into technical aspects or detailed discussions of the many uses to which underground space may be devoted. I also will leave to the technical meetings the outline of the state of the art. But I do want to tell you of the progress being made in channeling the expertise of many of the world's foremost authorities on rapid excavation and tunneling to consider the problems, laying the ground work for needed research, and provide the leadership in converting unused subsurface potentials to improve the quality of life. Consolidation Coal Company, through the mining research division of Continental Oil Company, is now undertaking the installation of a full-scale hydraulic transportation system to carry coarse coal from the mine face to the preparation plant. The facility will include all elements of a fully integrated haulage system including face haulage for both longwall and continuous miner sections, multiple slurry feeds, hydraulic hoisting and 2.4 miles of overland slurry transport. This undertaking is a result of more than six years of extensive research and testing, some of which has been previously releasted to the literature. To provide a reference framework for system description, a brief history of recent coal mining technological developments will be discussed. Following World War II, mechanization resulted in mining machines that were bigger, faster, more powerful, and more reliable. These changes were essentially refinements in an established mining system. They made mining more efficient than before, but they did not change the system itself. By about the mid-1960's, it was apparent that further improvements in the extraction machinery would have a declining payoff, simply because .the worst bottlenecks were in other components of the mining system. A modern continuous miner cannot be run continuously because other operations underground cannot keep pace. In fact, most continuous miners today run at less than 20% of capacity. Consequently, in 1969 Consol and its parent company, Continental Oil, undertook a long-range R&D program to try to change the basic haulage system for the better. Most coal at present is removed from the mine by a hand-off system in which the coal is transferred from the continuous miner to a shuttle car, often with the aid of a separate loader; then from the shuttle car to a system of conveyor belts; and finally from the conveyors to rail cars. The system involves a large amount of moving equipment underground, many transfer points, and the everpresent chance of operational delays and safety hazards. By removing the haulage bottleneck, we believe we can speed up underground operations substantially; and perhaps more important, we could make it feasible to develop a whole new generation of mining equipment that is inherently safer. What we wanted was a truly flexible, continuous haulage system with inherent safety advantages. Ideally the system had to meet three major requirements: First, the coal had to enter the transport system at the face, and remain in that same system all the way to the preparation plant. Second, the system had to be flexible and extensible so that it could- follow the mining machine as it advances and retracts. And, third, the system must be inherently safer than current haulage technology.

"INTRODUCTION Tunnel is a closed space structure and it is necessary to ensure the sufficient time and route for safe evacuation for the tunnel users in case of a tunnel fire. In order to do so, damages and collapse of the tunnel linings and the secondary disasters can be avoided. Furthermore, the road tunnel is one of important infrastructural facilities and stopping its function for a long time for a tunnel fire could cause a great economic loss. Therefore, the tunnel structure shall be the one which can be repaired as soon as possible, and the fire protection methods need to be selected among those which enable the service to start as early as possible. The necessity of the fire protection works is evaluated for the tunnel structure with the consideration of the expensive tunnel construction cost and the economic effects of the tunnel service. Naturally, the fire protection works, which can protect the tunnel linings from the tunnel fire with small repairs, are inevitable. Design engineers of the fire protection works estimate the scale of fire from the degree of damages on the linings and its repair cost, the effect of fire extinguishers placed inside of the tunnel, the secondary disasters in accordance with the tunnel lining damages if any, and the ratio of fire protection cost calculated from tunnel operation cost. Based on this information, the engineers design the fire protection works according to the permissible limits Among the design cases of the tunnel fire protection in Japan, as shown in Table 1, there is no cases that used the fire temperature-time curve to design the fire protection works for large fire caused by vehicles catching fire. However, the most of cases used 30-60 minutes for fire duration based on the entry prohibition of dangerous goods carrying vehicles or the effect of early fire fighting. This paper will study the variation between different methods used for fire protection in road tunnel in Japan to evaluate them and try to found some recommendations. Especial l care will be attention to Polypropylenes (PP) which is starting to be applied lately."

The use of continuous flight auger piles has increased significantly in the U.K. to such an extent that it is now the most widely used method of constructing small diameter bored piles. This paper describes the improvements in equipment, techniques and particularly monitoring that have led to this growth. A review of the equipment in use describes how purpose built self erecting machines have been generally adopted. Improvements in ancilliary equipment are described. Concrete has almost completely replaced grout and techniques have been developed to extend the length of reinforcement that can be placed. Leading specialist contractors have developed instrumentation to monitor the construction of the pile (in terms of time, depth, torque, concrete pressure and flow) and keep a record for checking. A further significant development of this monitoring by means of sensors at various levels in the auger stem is described. The results obtained from this monitoring are reviewed and future developments discussed.

Pellets are the main iron input to the blast furnace at ArcelorMittal Lazaro Cardenas iron and steel making facility in Mexico. Pellets are made at this facility using the concentrates generated and shipped from their captive mines viz., Las Truchas, Pena Colorada, Volcan Sonora. The concentrating plants, after grinding the ore to the liberation size, use magnetic separation and flotation to reject the silica, sulphur and phosphorous impurities. At Volcan Sonora Mines, the ore is contaminated with phosphorous minerals, and hence, after magnetic separation, the phosphate minerals are floated using anionic carboxylate collector (sodium oleate). Apart from floating the phosphate minerals, the sodium oleate also has some tendency to smear on the iron bearing mineral surfaces leaving a hydrophobic surface, which is expected to reduce the green pellet strength due to absorption of ultrafine sized air bubbles on these surfaces, and further generate higher levels of dust during the induration process. In order to alleviate this industrial problem, comparative studies were carried out on the concentrates from magnetic separation using reagents from synthetic sarcosinate and carboxylate family collectors. Results have indicated that the sarcosinate family members not only were found as replacement to carboxylate collectors, but also reduce the phosphorous content below the values achieved with oleate, thus have considerable benefits in the downstream steel making process. Based on the results, plant runs are being taken up at Volcan Sonora. In this article, the laboratory results obtained on iron grades and recoveries, and phosphorous rejection using both the reagents are presented.

El presente trabajo responde al estudio geológico realizado al distrito minero geológico San Rafael durante el período 1979 y 1980 a través de un mapeo geológico de 3,500 hectáreas. De acuerdo a este estudio se visualiza que la mina de San Rafael es la única productora de estaño y cobre en el Perú, así como la mina Quenamari produce plomo, zinc y plata. Sin embargo, se demostró que la frontera peruano-boliviano no es el límite de la mineralización de estaño, sino que existen otros yacimientos minerales de estaño. Asi también se describe la geología local y regional, los depósitos minerales y la mineralización del estaño en el Perú y Bolivia.

Resolution Copper Mine is planned to be a 2000 m deep panel cave mine with virgin rock temperatures above 80°C in rock with a high crystalline silica content. The planned run-of-mine production rate is 120 kt/day. The project is in prefeasibility evaluation. This paper discusses features of the ventilation system design, which include multiple ventilation shafts with total flow of about 3000 m³/s and both surface and underground refrigeration systems with more than 140 MW total capacity. This will be a very challenging mine to ventilate, but this work has demonstrated that it will be technically achievable with the application of existing technology.

In cooperation with the United States Bureau of Mines and the Idaho Bureau of Mines and Geology, the University of Idaho offers in the School of Mines a number of fellowships. These fellowships are open to college graduates who have had good training in mining, metallurgy, or chemistry, and who are qualified to undertake research work. The income of each fellowship is $720 a year for the 12 mo. beginning July 1, 1919. Fellows will register as students in the University of Idaho and become candidates for the degree of Master of Science in Mining or Metallurgy (unless this or an equivalent degree has been earned). Their class work-will he directed by the heads of the departments of instruction, but the greater portion of their time will be spent in research work under the direction of the Bureau of Mines staff resident at the University. The purpose f this work is to undertake the solution of definite problems confronting the mining and metallurgical industries of the State of Idaho. For 1919-20 the following subjects are being considered: 1. Flotation-with especial reference to differential separation of various minerals. 2. Availability of western wood oils for flotation purposes. 3. Treatment of the complex gold-silver ores of southern Idaho. 4. Ore-dressing problems. 5. Mining problems. The behavior of gold in a conventional copper electrorefinery anode slimes treatment process is expounded on in this study. In the raw anode slimes generated in a copper electrorefinery, gold occurs mainly as tiny particles of metallic gold, which are commonly attached to selenide particles. Some gold is also present in selenide form. Decopperizing the anode slimes retains much of the metallic gold, but also promotes the incorporation of gold in the structure of silver-rich selenide species. A greater fraction of the gold is converted to (Ag,Au)2Se or Ag3AuSe2 when high-Se and high-Ag anode slimes are decopperized at elevated temperatures and pressures. After pelletization and roasting of the slimes, the gold is converted to a (Ag,Au)-alloy and Ag3AuSe2. Smelting of the roaster products eliminates the selenium and converts the gold to a silver-rich (Ag,Au,Pd)-alloy in the dore metal. In the subsequent silver electrorefining process, gold collects as a gold-rich (Au,Ag,Pd)-alloy in the gold mud. Dore smelting rejects many impurities as a silica slag; minor amounts of gold are present as a (Ag,Au,Pd)-alloy in the silica slag. This gold is recovered by flotation and is recycled to the dore furnace. Gold is identified in both the tellurium caustic leach residue and the parting plant wash water mud as tiny particles of metallic gold. These products are also recycled to the dore furnace to recover their gold values.

The restructuring of mining operations in Valea Jiului coal basin imposed by the transation to the market economy calls for an increased coal production. Under the circumstances, the role of drainage networks grows ever more important. The paper describes an original mathematical model and software developed on its basis, with enables the ventilation engineer to assess the configurations of different systems, as well as to test their reliability and prognose their future performance before conceiving another methane drainage system or changing the existing one. The paper also includes the underlying principles of an optimization program for methane drainage networks, which will enable the detection of the optimal methane drainage system, both from a technical and an economic point of view.

This paper reviews recent positive developments in Europe on the regulation of gold mining. However, it also examines the problem that while gold projects may be bankable and technically and environmental defensible, the odds tend to be stacked against granting of an environmental permit. The historic background to this situation is examined and current developments and initiatives are critically analysed. Standards and benchmarks for the industry have been established across the community and these have a strong influence in European Union accession (and aspiring) states as well. While this is welcome in regard to improving environmental performance, it also represents a significant milestone with mining (and particularly gold mining) now æon the mapÆ as a legitimate enterprise, a situation that was patently not the case prior to 2003. At the project level, very frequently, the difficult biophysical problems are addressed and satisfactorily dealt with according to the new regulations, but still there are problems regards trust and acceptance that underpin a æsocial licenceÆ. What goes wrong and how can companies deal with the social/environmental issues that lead to entrenched views and concerns, irrespective of any amount of demonstration of good practice and corporate social responsibility? What is the role of the non-governmental organisation (NGO) and are they as accountable and responsible as they should be? The findings presented draw upon recent experience with the environmental permitting of projects in Spain, Greece, Romania, Bulgaria and Serbia on behalf of Australian, Canadian and British companies as well as international funding institutions.

NIOSH and the Illinois Clean Coal Institute are funding studies on characterization of coal and quartz dust in Interior Basin mines since 2009. Coal dust characteristics vary significantly and, are vital for the development of the engineering controls. This paper presents wettability characteristics of coal dust with respect to its chemical and physical properties, since wettability is considered to be a primary dust control technique. Particle size distribution, inter-particle interactions during wetting and quartz associations with organic and inorganic matter in coal seams is critical for understanding wetting phenomena. Silica content in the un-wetted fractions was found to be very high during wetting tests. Wetting of quartz may be limited by its association to hydrophobic materials as well as buoyancy forces resulting from particle size characteristics and particle-particle interaction in the wetting agent. Temperature of the wetting solution and effective contact time between dust particles and water droplets are found to be two important variables affecting the wettability. The characterization data obtained from this study can be utilized to develop engineering controls.

The development of a simple model for gas flow and burden movement has driven the need to improve our understanding of burden breakage mechanisms for single hole blasts and the interaction between multiple holes in solid and jointed rock masses. Conventional analytical understandings of the burden breakout using the elastic-tensile fracture model were studied and found to provide a breakout angle that is independent of burden in contradiction to experimental data. By considering rock fracture in terms of Mohr-Coulomb plasticity using analytical expressions from the field of cavity expansion analysis an improved relationship between breakout angle and burden is derived until the point of critical breakout at which the angle of breakout suddenly changes from between 90 degree and 100 degrees to zero. This suggests that the critical burden occurs at about 0.6 times the radial fracture zone calculated from the analytical solutions.

The development of larger size flotation machines, which started in the 1950's and 1960's, is still proceeding. The largest mechanical flotation machines avail-able today have unit volumes in the range of 38.2 to 43.9 M3 (1,350 to 1,550 cft). Designs for mechanical flotation cells of unit volumes as large as 70.8 m3 (2500 cft) are available. The development of these "giant" flotation machines has been and continues to be motivated by the increasingly critical forces of higher energy and capital costs, decreasing ore grades, and lower (real) prices for the products. As an expansion of a previous publication, this paper reports the further development of an improved mechanism for these large flotation machines. The starting point in the develop¬ment of a new mechanism was the identification of design and performance features of existing machines where improvements were desirable. The result of this work was a mechanism which s is an improvement over existing designs. This new design is characterized by an efficient overhung stator and a vortex profile rotor. The overhung design of the stator removes unnecessary and undesirable baffling in the lowest parts of the tank, while maintaining a quiescent froth layer. This results in lower power consumption and better pulp circulation and solids suspension. The vortex profile rotor acts as an efficient pump, with higher pulp recirculation rates as evidenced by the increased air dispersion capabilities, good solids suspension, and low power consumption.

"Arctic Canada is one of the largest undeveloped terrains remaining in the world, and is in many ways unique. The ecological balance of the region is more delicate than tropical or temperate regions of similar size. This region is likely to be developed by research for and production of resources, primarily petroleum, in the immediate future. As well as sensitive terrain surface caused by permafrost in some areas, many large and small mammals and birds are also in a delicate balance with the environment. Small changes in this balance can have large effects.The probability of finding petroleum in different regions varies widely, but already there are good indications on the mainland and in the Islands that both oil and gas are present. Geophysical work in the offshore, particularly the Beaufort Sea, suggests further promising potential. Possible reserves in the Islands and mainland Arctic may amount to 50 or more billion barrels.A responsible approach to problems facing exploitation in an Arctic environment includes the careful monitoring by industry of likely effects of their activities. The Mackenzie Valley Pipeline Research Association test loop at Inuvik provides an example of such monitoring. Outside Canada, the operations at Prudhoe Bay on the north coast of Alaska show how major companies may operate responsibly and reduce environmental interference to a minim'.::at. Nevertheless, four variables must affect any decisions to be made concerning energy resource exploitation in the Arctic. These are man's need for energy, economic and industrial pressures to develop energy sources, the desire to preserve a deteriorating environment, and the role of government as representing all individuals in the country and their several points of view. Factors that must be taken into account in making any decisions include the importance of Canadian oil in a world picture, the need for alternative sources of energy in the near future, the depletion of nonrenewable resources at an accelerating rate and the increasing awareness that the major problems facing man have no direct technical solution and that social or political decisions must precede further techno-logical development."

Provide reasonably priced, reliable fire protection for loading shovels. Approach An automatic fire, sensing and suppression system using both dry chemical and Halon 1301 was developed. It is more rugged than similar industrial-type fire protection systems. How It Works Temperature sensors detect heat from a fire, and trigger the system. These sensors are located inside the machinery house and under the house and shovel frame where it rotates around the crawler chassis ring gear. An alarm is sounded, and extinguishing agents are released either in the machinery house or in the ring gear area. The system can also be triggered by a manual control. If the fire Is detected in the machinery house, all power is shut down to the motor-generator sets, ventilation fan, and all electrical controls. Doors are automatically closed. After a delay to allow time for the ventilation fan to stop, Halon 1301, a gaseous fire extinguishing agent, is released inside the machinery house until it reaches a concentration of about 7 percent. This concentration is sufficient to extinguish a fire, but isn't toxic to personnel

INTRODUCTION The Washington Metro is a 98 mile rapid transit system that will serve the District of Columbia, southern Maryland, and northern Virginia. The construction work herein described relates to Section B-1 of this system. The contract for this work was awarded by the Owner, The Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority, to a joint venture doing business under the name of Ball-Shea-Norair. The partners in this venture were Gordon H. Ball, Inc., Danville, California; J. F. Shea Company, Inc., Walnut Creek, California; and Norair Engineering Corporation, Washington, D. C. The bid price for the project was $33,741,524 with a contract duration of 910 calendar days. Notice to proceed was issued January 5, 1970. The present modified price for the work is $36,866,000 with completion anticipated in July 1974. (About 1,638 days elapsed time.) The work to be done consisted essentially of construction of 3,490 linear feet of cut-and-cover track with side platform, and 600 ft cut-and-cover arch shaped subway stations. Stations are located in Judiciary Square and Eighth & G Street, N. W., areas. Decking of excavation in street areas, maintenance of traffic and utilities, vent and fan shafts, underpinning of court buildings in Judiciary Square and the Smithsonian National Portrait Building, and an electrical substation were included in the contract. Stations were constructed of cast-in-place concrete.
