"Mattagami Lake Mines Ltd operate a zinc-copper mine with an annual output of about 200,000 tons of zinc and 30,000 tons of copper concentrates. Zinc concentrates arc shipped to a company owned smelter in Valleyfield (a distance of 690 miles), for Export to Quebec City and also to Josephtown, Pennsylvania (1,060 miles, Figure 1.)The protection of concentrates in open gondola rail shipments has been a matter of concern since operations commenced. Considerable financial losses did occur at times because of wind erosion. Operating difficulties were also encountered by customers because of excessive moisture accummulation in the concentrates. Test shipments made in 1969 established the magnitude of losses in open cars. The results and subsequent investigations at our mines and elsewhere confirmed that load protection is an economic necessity.Many types of covers were experimented with, more or less successfully. In 1972 we agreed on a joint program with Dupont of Canada Limited. A new type of cover was developed by early 1973. It has been in use since, undergoing several improvements as experience accumulates."

"INTRODUCTION Analyses of samples of crude oil from several Texas oil fields have been published from time to time in Bureau of Mines reports, some of which are out of print, but many other analyses of Texas crude oils have not been published. The purpose of this paper is to make available in condensed tabular form under one cover all analyses of the Texas crude oils that have been examined by the Bureau of Mines.DIVISION OF TABLEThe table of analyses is divided into six parts in accordance with the geographic subdivisions of the State. (See fig. 1.) This grouping of the oils corresponds only in a general way with the principal formations in each area from which oil is being produced. In general, the principal oil-producing formations in the Texas Panhandle and West Texas areas are of Permian age; those of North Texas are of Pennsylvanian and older ages; those of the East Texas Basin and of Central Texas are of Cretaceous age; and those of the Texas Gulf Coast are of Eocene and younger ages.For convenience in presentation the name of the geologic age has been assigned to each group of the table although same of the oils included in the group may be of another age.Group 1 includes oils of Permian age produced in the Texas Panhandle area, which comprises the following counties: Dallam, Sherman, Hansford, Ochiltree, Lipscomb, Hartley, Moore, Hutchinson, Roberts, Hemphill, Oldham, Potter, Carson, Gray, Wheeler, Deaf Smith, Randall, Armstrong, Donley, Collingsworth, Parmer, Castro, Swisher, Briscoe, Ball, and Childress."

A general description of the geology of the Southern Coalfield is given. The relationship between the Illawarra Coal Measures, the overlying Triassic and the underlying Upper Marine Series, of Permian age as are the Coal Measures, is briefly explained and thestratigraphy of each is described. The eight coal seams are then treated in slightly more detail as to their thickness, quality, areas of distribution and best occurrences.In the last few years each of the authors has been concerned with one phase or other of the stTucture of the field in detail or in mining operations with the result that it is now possible to name a number of monoclines, anticlines, domes and synclines defined in detail. A minor quantitative study has been made of faults and dykes with regard to form, direction intensity and inter-relationship. It seems probable that with the further collection of data a more detailed study in these matters will be of considerable value to the economy of mining in the Southern Coalfield.

It has been the aim of the writer, by measuring his base line on the territory of theoretical chemistry, to attempt to fix by triangula tion certain points within the domain of mineralogy. As the barest first experiment in this direction, a few of the hydrated oxides of iron have been selected, their theoretical construe tion reduced to percentage of the constituents into which the ordinary analytical methods would resolve them, and the results compared with actual analyses compiled from the most reliable sources; the accidental errors being as much as possible eliminated. This method seems to be a simple one and one easily pursued, but, as will shortly appear, it is beset with grave difficulties, all of which the writer does not pretend to have satisfactorily surmounted. In the first place arises the important question, what are we to understand by the hydrated oxides of iron ? In all books of chemistry and lexicons of minerals, the proposition, long ago taught by the earlier chemists, that water might exist in two forms of combination, viz., as water of crystallization or as water of constitution, is tacitly assumed. There is nothing in the principles of the new chemistry which is opposed to this; for (to carry the mind's eye into the process of con struction of the least units into which a definite chemical compound is capable of being divided without losing its characteristic proper ties), however unlikely it may seem, it is, nevertheless, possible that a given molecule of iron may, under certain conditions of heat, pressure, etc., attract to itself as many molecules of the water in which it is natant as: from the relative size, shape, attractive force, etc. of either, it is capable of taking up, and this complex system of associated molecules might oscillate as a physical unit so long as the conditions on which its existence was dependent remained unchanged. Moreover, it is highly probable that the first effect upon such a mole cule produced by physical or chemical forces would be to separate it into two or more simple ones of different kinds, while a further ap plication of these forces might rend asunder the bonds of the simpler compounds themselves.

"Longwall bituminous coal mining has been practiced in Pennsylvania since the 1970""s. Hundreds of longwall panels have been mined during the last 40 years but only 24 have actually undermined Pennsylvania's Interstate Highway System. The impact to interstate highways are summarized in this paper and the factors that influence the magnitude of these impacts are examined.INTRODUCTIONOver the last 30 years, interstate highways in Pennsylvania have been undermined by portions of 21 bituminous coal mine longwall panels. From 2003 to 2008, three of the panel were extracted by the Emerald Mine and six by the Cumberland Mine both in Greene County and both owned by Alpha Resources. Previous assessments of longwall mining under Pennsylvania’s interstates have identified impacts to the highways but no danger to public safety. In general the magnitude and extent of impacts during the recent undermining of Interstate 79 or 179 appears to be similar as those identified in previous studies. The nine longwall panels are among some of the widest in the U.S. They are supercritical in character with overburdens ranging from greater than 152 m (500 ft) to less than 305 m (1,000 ft).The Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection (PA DEP) requested that the University of Pittsburgh summarize observations collected by their staff during the recent undermining of 179. Observations and photographs of impacts to the highway were made by PA DEP staff and entered into reports prepared by California District Mining Office (COMO) staff and statements written into the Bituminous Underground Mining Information System (BUMIS) database. In addition to the observations by the PA DEP, the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) conducted a series of detailed land surveys along portions of the highway undermined from 2003 to 2008. To characterize the subsidence basin fanned by longwall mining. PennDOT information has been analyzed by another research group within the university (Guticrre7, et al., 20 I 0)."

"A colorimetric technique, originally developed for methyl iso butyl carbinol (MIBC) based on the Komarowsky reaction, has been extended to a wide range of common mineral flotation frothers. The procedure, which is briefly described, is shown suited to on-site determination in a series of industrial campaigns. Some frother observations are described, including: concentration evolution down a bank, distribution between pulp and froth phases, and a mass balance around a circuit. Minute amounts of frother in recycle water were also measured.The contribution of frother and alcohol by-products in the analysis was generally additive for plants using aliphatic alcohol type frothers and decoupled for systems using glycols. Typically, U250C (polyglycol) was used at higher concentration (>10 ppm) than MIBC (aliphatic alcohol) (<10 ppm) or F-150 (polyglycol) (<3ppm).The ability to monitor frother easily will help interpret gas dispersion behaviour and should permit further optimization of flotation cell hydrodynamics and chemistry. The capability to directly measure should help optimize the type, amount and location of frother addition, and to assess frother recycled with reclaim process water.INTRODUCTIONOwing to the lack of analytical methods, the task of determining frother concentration in plant flotation circuits is not routinely performed. Industrial sites seldom outsource analyses that are both costly and inconvenient, due to the necessity of shipping freeze-dried samples to remote testing facilities. A more direct colorimetric method has recently been demonstrated for the laboratory characterization of common industrial frothers (Gélinas and Finch, 2004). The approach, based on the Komarowsky reaction (Penniman et al., 1936; Coles et al., 1942; Duke, 1947), was previously described by Parkhomovski et al. (1976) for methyl iso butyl carbinol (MIBC). The reaction involves the interaction of the OH group of a higher alcohol, concentrated sulphuric acid, and salicylaldehyde, to yield coloured solutions with intensities that can be analyzed by UV-visible spectrophotometry."

Rehabilitation has been very effective in the short to medium term in providing a cost effective and reliable means of containing the side effects of land disturbance. However, there is still insufficient data to critically evaluate the sucess of rehabilitation in the long term. There is an urgent need to develop objective criteria to monitor the sucess of rehabilitation. The aim of rehabilitation in Australia has traditionally been to return disturbed land to natural vegetation compatible with the surrounding area. This objective has often been accepted instinctively without adequately addressing alternatives.

The Bureau of Mines explored the Three Kids deposit in 1941 as part of a strategic minerals program. Earlier mining and exploration had established the presence of a substantial tonnage of medium-grade wad ore, and drilling and sampling by the Bureau of Mines, in collaboration with the Federal Geological Survey, indicated an additional tonnage such that development and exploitation became more clearly feasible. Private interests, with Government support, undertook to produce metallurgical-grade manganese. The present paper describes the Bureau of Mines exploration and subsequent development. Manganese in the Three Kids area is found in one of the lower members of the Muddy Creek formation in a bed of fine sandstone and silt, which outcrops around the north edge of the River Mountains and generally dips 20° to 40° away from the hills. There is considerable variation in the thickness and grade of the ore. The ore is light weight, having a density of 1.2 to 2.

The mechanized mining cycle using loaders and shuttle cars had its peak in terms of usage in the mining industry during 1950 through 1960. In Brazil, this system is still used at underground coal mines in southern Santa Catarina coal basin. With the aim of investigating the benefits of a new mining scheme using the room and pillar method for these local mines, a computational simulator model was developed in order to investigate the mining cycle. This paper presents the methodology used to develop the simulator and the results that the simulation shows regarding impact of the proposed new scheme on mining productivity.

Tile creep behavior of a iron was investigated over the range of temperatures from 375° to 1150°K. Apparent activation energies for creep, obtained by the effect of sudden changes in temperature on the creep rate, revealed the presence of- four distinguishable regions. The creep behavior of a iron in Regions II (480° to 774°K) and 111 (775° to 1045°K) was found to correlate well with a model where the creep rate is controlled by the nonconsevualive motion. of jogged screw dislocations. An anomalous increase in the apparent activation energy fur creep in Region III was found to be in harmony with the known decrease in the free activation energy for self-diffusion over the Curie transformation range. Furthermore, the creep rates in Regions II and III were found to increase with stress due not only to the effect of stress on the activation energy but also to an increase in density of mobile dislocations. The evidence suggests that pipe diffusion along moving dislocations could be a significant factor over the lower temperatures of Region II. ALTHOUGH the creep properties of iron and steel have been of interest to metallurgists for some time and an extensive literature is now available, most of the published information has not produced much toward understanding the fundamental dislocation processes controlling the creep behavior of these materials. Whereas the activation energy for high-temperature creep of metals usually agrees well with that for self-diffusion, Sherby, Orr, and Dorn1 deduced from the data of Tapsell -and c1enshaw2 that the activation energy for creep of Armco iron is about 78,000 cal per mole and more recently Lytton and sherby3 reviewed the data of Jenkins and Mellor4 and found an activation energy for creep of a iron of 80,000 cal per mole. Both values are substantially greater than the activation energy for self-diffusion in a iron. Because of the limited data suitable for purposes of identifying the controlling dislocation mechanisms of creep and the unusually high activation energies for creep quoted above, it was considered desirable to reinvestigate in detail the creep of a iron by more reliable techniques which would provide sufficient data for determination of the creep mechanisms. EXPERIMENTAL TECHNIQUE Creep specimens were prepared from 3/8 by 4 in. iron bar stock of the following composition by weight percent: 0.001 C, 0.0120 0, 0.001 N, 0.004 S, and 0.003 P. The as-received bars were cold-rolled to a thickness of 0.100 in., annealed under argon for 30 min at 1113°K, cold-rolled to a final thickness of 0.063 in., and machined into tensile specimens having gage section 0.250 in. wide and 1.70 in. long. Finally they were recrystallized under argon at 1113°K. Specimens to be crept above 1060°K were recrystallized at 1173°K. Both recrystallization treatments gave the same reproducible equiaxed ASTM No. 4 grain size. Creep testing was conducted in machines fitted with Andrade-Chalmers arms that maintained a constant stress to within ±0.2 pct of the reported values. Deformation over the specimen gage section was sensed with a linear differential transformer and recorded auto-graphically as a function of time. The strains deduced from these measurements were sensitive to ±5 x 10-5. During creep the specimens were contained in an argon-filled chamber which was immersed in a temperature-controlled molten tin bath. Creep temperatures, as measured by thermocouples attached to the specimen, were maintained to within ±10.25°K of the reported values. For activation-energy determinations rapid changes in temperature of about 12°K were obtained within 30 sec by direct resistance heating of the creep specimen, and maintained to ±1°K of the reported values. Observations of structural details of specimens before and after creep tests were made by electrolytic polishing and etching in acqueous ammonium persulfate. Considering rock fragmentation by explosive as the ultimate goal in mines and quarries, vibrations are definitely one of the main drawbacks faced by the Industry. If we can accurately predict vibrations level and frequencies, taking into account the whole set of the involved parameters, this will bring a major benefit to each of us, in our daily production process optimization effort. The model presented in this paper answers to this need thanks to a "holistic" approach of the vibration mechanism. By holistic, we mean that we approach the vibration effect (wave propagation) as a whole, by understanding all of the mechanisms that contributes to the process and comprehending how they are connected.

This paper develops the themes explored by the authors at the Fourth International Platinum Conference,. Optimization techniques can be used to significantly increase the value of mining businesses by enabling better long-term planning decisions. Open pit and underground mine design, mine scheduling, cut-off grade and blending, stockpiling, and the linking of these to flexible elements of the metallurgical recovery processes are all evaluated together. Transport or sale of intermediate products and the requirements of the product metal markets can also be considered. Experience shows that net present value (NPV) can potentially be increased by 5-35 per cent or more, usually even before the expenditure of significant amounts of project capital. The case studies presented include: > An existing operation with multiple open pits and PGM concentrators linked to offsite downstream processing facilities, and with infrastructure constraints for which the scheduling of current operations and the potential for expansion were investigated > An existing operation with an integrated portfolio of mines, concentrators, smelter, and refinery, for which the various possible sources of ore for processing were prioritized to match the downstream process plant constraints and the product markets > An underground operation in Zimbabwe for which the optimum mining width was calculated and expansion plans were evaluated > An underground mine with many separate mining sections, for which a revised schedule was developed aiming to keep the shaft system and processing plant at capacity with the highest net value material available at any time throughout the life of mine. In the concluding section of the paper, a few brief notes are included suggesting how the strategic recommendations from enterprise optimization studies may be implemented by the owner&apos;s team.

The operation of gas-condensate fields is comparatively new and involves physical principles with which the industry was not prcviously familiar. It has been necessary to devise methods for testing gas-condensate wells and to correlate laboratory and field data. In this paper new methods are advanced for interpreting well G.P.M.† tests whereby dilution by dry gas can be estimated and information supplied on revaporization of condensates by dry gas. Inaccuracies in well test data are discussed. Changes in flow rates can cause changes in the G.P.M. of the effluent and it may take some time for a well to become stabilized after an important change in flow rate. Retrograde tests as usually conducted cannot be directly compared with field G.P.M. data, because the retrograde tests usually include solution gas in the condensates, which are reported On the cumulative basis whereas field data (G.P.M.) usually report pentaneS PlUS on a rate or instantaneous basis. Introduction Though long known to physicists, the phenomena Of retrograde condensation became known to the oil and gas industry Only in recent years, when deeper drilling disclosed that the behavior of vapors under changing pressures was different in high-pressure reservoirs than under the low-pressure operations with which the industry was familiar. These deep, high-pressure reservoirs in which condensation and vaporization behaved inversely to the accustomed manner became known as "gas-distillate," or preferably "gas-condensate" fields. Partly to prevent precipitation and retention of liquids in the reservoir, but still more to prevent the waste of residue gas, the operation known as "recycling," or preferably "cycling," was instituted, in which the residue gas is reinjected into the reservoir, thus maintaining pressure and driving the wet gas to the producing wells. For lack of field experience to serve as a guide, the industry had to assume that theory and laboratory experiments could accurately forecast retrograde behaviors in operating these gas-condensate fields, but it is obvious that these assumptions should be checked at the first opportunities against actual field experience. To make such checks, it is necessary to accumulate a large quantity of reliable field data, but experience has shown that it is difficult to obtain reliable field data and that the laboratory data as usually presented are not in directly comparable form. The problems of correlation involve the complex phase behavior on the one hand, and a knowledge of field data and a visualization of underground conditions on the other hand. This paper is an approach from field experience, The purposes of this article are to discuss the sources of uncertainty in the data and to present methods of analyzing, interpreting and correlating laboratory and field data. Data mostly from lower Gulf Coast fields are presented, from which some conclusions can be derived, but better data from more sources than those available to the writer will be required before satisfactory answers to many questions can be obtained. This paper is presented to stimulate the analysis and publication of data from other fields, the reexamination of field and laboratory methods, and the taking of more complete and reliable field tests. For these purposes, the writer presents some speculations that otherwise would not be appropriate.

This paper examines the cost elements associated with changes to gold mining practice over the last decade that result from the changes in environmental regulation and the heightened governmental and public awareness of environmental issues. The main experience base is Pegasus Gold Corporation&apos;s flagship mine, Zortman/Landusky, located in the Little Rocky Mountains of Phillips County, Montana. This operation was among the first mines that were permitted under the 1974 Montana Metal Mining Reclamation Act. In 1974, the Montana Metal Mine Reclamation Act was enacted, creating a permit system for metal and industrial mineral mines for the state of Montana. The act established the content of mine permit applications and defined parameters for the reclamation of mining disturbances. The Act can be viewed as implementing legislation for Article 9, Section 2, of Montana&apos;s Constitution, which provides that "all lands disturbed by the taking of natural resources shall be reclaimed." Pegasus Gold Corporation&apos;s Zortman/Landusky mine was among the first mines permitted under the new Act. In 1978, the initial permit applications were submitted for Zortman and Landusky, and a full Environmental Impact Statement was prepared by the Montana Department of State Lands; permits were issued in 1979. When opened later that year, the anticipated mine life for the combined Landusky and Zortman operations was approximately 18 years, based upon a proven and probable ore reserve of 43.2 million tons. Zortman/Landusky was the first large-scale heap leach gold mine in the United States. Its distinguishing feature was, and remains, a remarkably low ore grade, now .016 oz/ton. The ore is economic because it requires neither crushing nor agglomerating to leach effectively. Approximately two years after the initiation of the state&apos;s regulatory process, the Federal Land Policy Management Act (FLPMA) was enacted, establishing a mine regulatory framework for lands under the administration of the Bureau of Land Management.

Instantaneous outbursts of coal and gas have occurred at various times in several working districts of Metropolitan Colliery, N.S.W.They have occurred in headings only, under both hand and mechanised conditions, and with seam gas ranging from mainly methane to nearly pure carbon dioxide. A modification of inducer shotfiring using a shear cut was introduced in 1955, and in 1961 full face firing both to a machine cut shear and off the solid was introduced. The current series of outbursts -1961 to 1963 - has been induced under these systems with full control of the time of outburst, but without prediction, and with some disappointing production features.Various aspects of current conditions and practices at Metropolitan are considered singular, such as the coarse granulometry of outburst coal, the prevalence of floor heave, the absence of strong structures at outburst sites, the possibility of outburst at any stage in pillar formation up to the last few yards, the effect of rate of advance on outburst occurrence, and the mildness of many outbursts experienced.It is concluded that inducer shotfiring is a reliable control but it suffers by comparison with outburst-free conditions, and that control by preyention would be preferable.INTRODUCTIONThe phenomenon of instantaneous outbursts of coal and gas has been described in detail previously (Hargraves, 1958). Briefly, it is a combined gas and stress hazard of deep coal mining, usually occurring in virgin work and during active face advance, when coal and seam gas burst from the face into the workings.Instantaneous outbursts have occurred sporadically at Metropolitan Colliery, N.S.W., since 1895. Timber support of mine openings continues to be an effective system for ground support, due to its avail¬ability, flexibility, and ease of installation. Timber support of mine openings as a primary method to support loose rock has been replaced to a large extent by rockbolting and by filling systems. How¬ever, the many designs of square-set timber and varia¬tions of crib and stull support that have been developed to suit many stope configurations have proven reliable over many years of application. Integrated in modern excavation and stoping methods, timber remains an im¬portant ground support material for today&apos;s mines. ADVANTAGES AND DISADVANTAGES OF TIMBER SYSTEMS Timber, when used as a part of the total support system, is recognized for its unique support properties. More than a cover to prevent minor falls of ground, timber systems have been carefully designed to provide adequate support with sufficient compressive qualities to achieve a safe working environment in extremely diffi¬cult ground conditions. In some cases, a timber support method is designed to yield while retaining its protec¬tive support qualities. Little or no initial investment in equipment or plant is required for incorporating timber into the mining support system. Low cost cutoff saws and portable chain saws are sufficient equipment for effective use of dimen¬sioned (sawed) or round (stull) timber support. Until recently, small sawmills of various complexity were com¬mon at mine surface plants. Sawmills at the mine sites have generally been replaced by timber vendors&apos; mills. Suppliers have been able to use efficient cutting and lumber handling methods to reduce the cost of mine timbers. Most suppliers will package dimensioned mine timber into bundles that are suitable for handling down mine shafts and on level conveyances. The principal disadvantage of timber as a support method is higher material cost and labor cost associated with its labor-intensive installation. Furthermore, stand¬ing timber reserves of mine quality wood are in short supply in some areas, and heavy competition exists for alternative uses of the timber supplies. Vendors are reluctant to supply large cross section dimension tim¬bers relatively free of defects. Some mine operations require 4.8-m (16-ft) lengths of firm timber over 0.09 m2 (144 sq in.) in section and these are difficult to obtain in large quantities. APPLICATION OF TIMBER FOR MINE SUPPORTS Timber used in mine support has been cut from many species of trees. A firm hardwood with physical properties similar to western Douglas fir has been pre¬ferred in the US. Other harder and softer woods, how¬ever, have been used when readily available or where the specific strength or crushing quality of the wood is a desired specification of the support system design. Hard¬ wood, commonly oak, has been used where maximum crushing resistance is required. Mahogany and fir are widely used for shaft guide timber. Normally, timber is used with its core axis parallel to the long axis of the timber dimension. However, in some cases, it is placed normal to its core in a "butt" log position, so as to provide maximum resistance to abrasion of the ore passage adjacent to the cut end of the block. By selective placement of timber block¬ing, controlled resistance to ground closure can be achieved which will prevent early failure of primary sup¬port members of the timber structure. Timber is widely used in modern mining operations as a construction member for chute-lip support. These designs are tailored to each operation to conform to the dimensions of the haulage equipment being used. As a construction material, wood requires none of the spe¬cial equipment necessary for placement of concrete or steel support. Placement of these alternate support ma¬terials requires carefully dimensioned and engineered excavation for their installation. Wood can be easily sawed to fit on location. The successful use of timber in heavy ground de¬pends on the careful and accurate placement of block¬ing and bracing to achieve the controlled yielding re¬sistance needed to support the mine opening. Similarly, frequency, size, and placement of top and bottom block¬ing stulls in flat-bedded deposits are carefully determined to provide adequate support at the mining face. Con¬trolled caving through failure of the stulls may be required as the scope retreats from the earlier mined-out sections. The support program must achieve both of these dimensionless qualities by specification of stull frequency and size. The utility of the square set-system of ground sup¬port and timber support is described in Chap. 2, re¬printed from US Bureau of Mines Information Circular 6691. Four examples of effective use of timber for support of stoping and other mine openings are pre¬sented in other chapters in this section. The Gilman mine&apos;s use of Mitchell slice stoping described in Chap. 3 is an early modification of the square-set mining system. This application proved reli¬able for heavy ground and overcame some of the dis¬advantages of conventional square-set timber. Chap. 4 describes the Burgin mine&apos;s use of timber with other reinforcement material. This combination of materials achieved high strength and control with yielding com¬ponent members necessary for heavy, squeezing ground. Chap. 5 describes the Bunker Hill mine&apos;s use of square¬set timber in a new configuration that provides an effi¬cient and safe support for stoping using small load¬haul-dump (LHD) mobile equipment. "RÉSUMÉDurant les 10 dernières années, les améliorations dans le contrôle des limites des sautages et les arpentages après l’exploitation ont fourni des informations préalables et post facto sur les limites minières réalisées par rapport à la planification, plus particulièrement pour les grands chantiers exploités par les méthodes chambres vides et sous-niveaux. Cependant, peu de recherches ont été faites pour améliorer la délimitation du minerai, l’estimation des ressources et des réserves, les études de faisabilité et la récupération minière dans d’autres types de gisements. Il faudra d’abord expliciter les impacts des lacunes, en quantité et en qualité, de l’information géologique et de l’échantillonnage sur le rendement de l’extraction. Il faudra également remplacer la notion de « dilution générale » par celles de « dilution » et de « perte de minerai ». Les impacts des lacunes observées sur l’exploitation des gisements d’or filoniens sont démontrés par une simulation basée sur des résultats d’études antérieures à la mine Thompson d’Inco, des impacts financiers de densités d’information moindre et par des analyses des valeurs actualisées nettes (VAN) de deux cas types.Deux gisements similaires, de 3 m et 6 m de largeur et exploités par chambres vides sont étudiés, en prenant pour cas de base la délimitation sur maille de 7,5 m (25 pi.) et en étudiant les impacts des limites moins précises supportées par une maille de 15 m (50 pi.), en assumant que ces imprécisions moyennes de +/- 0,62 m se transforment soit en surestimation (dilution), soit en sous-estimation (pertes de minerai).Les impacts d’information moins précise ont été beaucoup plus forts sur le gisement plus étroit : autant la dilution que les pertes de métal ont diminué les VAN du gisement de 3 m de 39,27 % et 45,41 % respectivement, tandis que les VAN du gisement de 6 m ont été diminuées que de 12,84 % et 11,55 %.Ces impacts des valeurs actualisées nettes diminuées justifient et exigent des efforts plus systématiques pour s’assurer que les travaux de mise en valeur et les études de faisabilité soient réalisés de façon requise pour optimiser l’exploitation et offrir aux investisseurs des rendements compétitifs par rapport à ceux des autres secteurs industriels. ABSTRACTDuring the past 10 years, research work to improve the survey of stope limits after mining supplied useful information, particularly for large open and sub-level stopes, regarding waste dilution caused by differences between final production limits and planned stope limits.However, the efficiency of this information to improve the overall efficiency of the mining process is limited, given that the impacts of inaccurate ore limits leading to dilution (sensu stricto) and ore losses have not been considered adequately. Geological/sampling information should be optimized in terms of quantity and/or quality for the deposit characteristics and the constraints of the mining method used. As industry practice regarding the definition and recording of dilution is flexible and as ore losses frequently are poorly documented, the use of these terms is reviewed.Simulations were carried out on two typical narrow gold deposits, based on an earlier study at Inco’s Thompson mine regarding the impacts of wide to narrow delineation grids using recorded variations of vein geometry. Vertical to sub-vertical deposits of 3 m and 6 m widths mined by long-hole open stopes were considered. Deposits delineated by 7.5 m (25 ft) grids were taken as a base case and the impacts of less accurate limits in conjunction with long hole mining based only on a 15 m (50 ft) delineation grid. The impacts of overestimation (dilution) and underestimation (metal losses) were considered separately, using the average error of +/-0.62 m recorded in the Inco study.The impact of less accurate information was much stronger on the narrower deposit: both dilution and ore losses diminished the net present value of the 3 m wide deposit"
