The Regional Connector Transit Project is a 1.9-mile-long underground light rail system that will connect LA Metro’s A (Blue), E (Expo), and L (Gold) Lines in downtown Los Angeles. This $1.75-billion design-build project is scheduled for revenue service in Spring 2023. The project consists of 21-foot diameter twin-bored tunnels, a 300-footlong crossover SEM cavern, three new underground stations (at 1st Street/Central Avenue, 2nd Street/ Broadway Avenue, and 2nd/Hope Streets), and cut-and-cover tunnels along South Flower, Alameda, and 1st Streets. This paper, which is the continuation of our previous paper presented in RETC 2019—LA Metro Regional Connector Transit Project: Successful Halfway-Through Completion, will provide insight regarding the construction of major components, and the system integration and testing work undertaken for this complex transit project.

This paper will deal with on-site maintenance welding using the stick electrode, electric arc process. It is primarily concerned with the underlying principles, the application of which, or the lack of such application, governs the success or failure of the operation. It will discuss first the base metal or item to be welded, including the field identification of its weld-ability and the determination of the procedures to be followed. Second, it will outline heat effects and the interrelation between heat applied as part of a welding operation and heat deliberately applied as part of a heat treating cycle, stressing the fact that in welding the same basic principles are effective. The third consideration will be weld metal and its control of both composition and properties. Last, but not least, distortion, shrinkage and residual stress will be considered and practical means for minimizing their adverse effects outlined.

Smelting of nickel-copper sulfide ores at Vale Inco’s Sudbury operations commenced in 1888 and the first converting plant went into operation in 1892. As the demand for nickel grew, the smelting operations expanded and by the 1960’s the Copper Cliff Smelter featured the longest converter aisle in the world with space for nineteen Peirce-Smith converters. During this long period, different converting techniques and vessels were employed. The evolution of converting is reviewed with special emphasis on the modifications made to the Peirce-Smith vessel to accommodate the metallurgical and process needs of the changing times.

Sampling of heterogeneous mixtures of fused metals or solidified melts is subject to errors not met in sampling finely ground ores or granular materials. These errors arise largely because of the segregation of constituent metals that usually takes place during solidification. It is seldom that a random sample of a lot of metal will represent the composition of the entire lot. The problem becomes especially difficult when it is necessary to make accurate analyses for a segregated impurity present in very small amounts. This paper discusses some of the pertinent experimental observations made in selecting a method for sampling melts of aluminum and zinc containing small amounts of iron and silicon as impurities. Although this experimental study dealt only with sampling this specific combination of metals, many aspects of the study apply generally to any mixture of mol ten metals containing minor constituents that segregate rapidly during freezing of the melt.

"Ventilation is one of the most important features of coal mining, and if a mine is exceptionally gassy it is often difficult to ventilate it in such a way as to make it safe. The general system of splitting the main air current so that two, three, or more sets of room entries are ventilated by the same current of air does not provide a safe method if non-permissible electrical equipment, such as cable-reel, crab-reel, or trolley locomotives are used on gathering haulage, or if open-type hoist or pump motors are used. The problem has been greatly simplified at the Crucible mine of the Crucible Fuel Co. at Crucible, Pennsylvania.The system is not only applicable to the room-and-pillar method of mining, but it may be adopted for any panel system of mining. There also appears to be a definite application in mechanized mining, where the rapid extraction often results in inadequate attention to ventilation and where the gassiness of the section generally increases because, as compared to hand loading, the methane has less time to drain off. Problems caused by water discharge from surface mine ventilation shafts can be significant and are usually unforseen. The discharged water is often hyper-saline or acidic and can cause environmental degradation over a wide radius. It can also lead to recurring power pole fires and primary fan breakdowns. A range of solutions to the water discharge problem has been implemented in many Australian mines. In most cases the solutions have been ad hoc, with the overall cost and effectiveness varying tremendously. This paper reviews and contrasts the practicality and effectiveness of the various available remedial options.

A series of linear programmed instruction modules was developed in the general subject areas of Blasting Technology & Explosives Safety & Electrical Training. The linear programs (modules) were developed in the form of tape-slide plus workbook materials, while the branching format evolved from the LTS teaching machine system from MIT, through several other teaching machines and micro-computers, finally settling on Radio Shack TRS-80 microcomputers, Models I & III. Initial validation figures indicate that essentially the same result, are attained from both methods (based on pre and post test scores), with the most noticeable difference being an approximately 25% savings in study time with the branching modules. In December 1980, the development of modules on High-Voltage Training, Trolley Wireman Training, and Compressed Gas Safety was added to the overall tasks of the contract.

Heap leaching efficiency is reduced by poor solution flow characteristics (channeling and ponding), which result from compaction and fines migration. Agglomeration of the ore can prevent compaction and immobilize fines, but copper leaching requires an acid-resistant binder to stabilize the agglomerates. Until now, there has not been a satisfactory way to evaluate whether a binder was effective, other than squeezing a handful to see if it ?feels right.? Procedures have been developed to quantitatively determine whether a binder produces agglomerates that can withstand compaction in an acidic solution, and have identified several binders that will provide sufficiently compaction-resistant agglomerates for copper heap leaching. "INTRODUCTION Much of the recent progress in increasing the efficiency of oil-well performance can be attributed to advancements in the art of cleaning wells. Through research and development by operators and service companies during the past decade, significant improvements in the application of engineering and chemical principles to well-cleaning technology have widened greatly the scope of ""clean-out"" methods to the end that greater ultimate recovery of oil will be attained.This report reviews recent improvements and developments on this important problem in California; it describes also the use of various methods and tools for cleaning wells to stimulate or revive their productivity. Developments in preventing and removing mud sheaths in well-completion operations also are described. The report is based on a field survey, supplemented by data from the technical and patent literature and from manufacturers' catalogs, which contain much valuable information.In preparing the material for publication as a Bureau of Mines report, the author has been fully aware of certain limiting conditions that attend the discussion of a subject such as that treated in this report. The following are examples:1. To a considerable extent, well cleaning in California is done with tools rented from service companies, and their representatives and employees are specialists in jobs of this type. They usually have working experience with their own equipment and methods which greatly exceeds that of persons whose interest has been casual or who have had no opportunity to study the subject in detail in actual practice. Many of the tools and methods are covered by letters patent for the protection that may be in developing and successfully applying these mechanical and chemical means of increasing the production of wells. Frequently several years have been required to perfect a given tool or technique, requiring relatively large investments to establish a service that is remunerative to those who have primary interest in a certain development and at the same time attractive enough to the operators of producing properties (because of greater quantities of oil delivered into the flow tanks) to warrant employment of or contractual agreements with a particular service group."

Modern steelmaking is based on direct use of oxygen in high intensity batch reactors. A totally new approach is proposed in this paper, based on the view that pursuit of high intensity is unlikely to lead to successful coal-based continuous steelmaking. By substituting carbon dioxide and water vapor as the oxidants rather than using oxygen directly, the intensity is greatly reduced. Accordingly, subsurface formation of carbon monoxide bubbles can be avoided by careful manipulation of the three participating rate processes, gaseous diffusion, interfacial chemical kinetics and liquid phase mass transfer. Steelmaking can then be carried out without explosive ejection of molten droplets and the generation of micro-spray but rather in a controlled and fume less fashion. The vital component is the introduction of generic melt circulation technology. Three melt circulation loops in series are envisaged. Starting with a composite feed of iron ore fines, pulverized coal and lime flux, a metallized solid raft floating on molten iron is propelled out of the ironmaking loop onto the first of two downstream steelmaking loops. In the first, a liquid slag is formed, primary decarburization is undertaken not with oxygen but rather with CO2 and H2O and the melt is desulfurized. The semi-product stream enters the third melt circulation loop, where open-channel decarburization is effected along with dephosphorization to yield a low carbon steel product. Alternatively, the melt leaves the last loop to irrigate a packed tower countercurrent to argon at around 100 mbar to continuously produce ultra-low carbon (ULC) steel.

There are many sources of gas in underground mines including development and production blasting, strata gases, spontaneous combustion, diesel equipment, chemicals used for a wide range of functions, welding activities and fires.It is only in relatively recent times that electronic gas monitors (or detectors) have become both safe and affordable for routine use.In modern mines, gas monitors should be in daily use by the ventilation department as well as blasting re-entry (or clearance) crews, and are often used by drilling crews, shift supervisors, hygienists and mine rescue or fire fighting crews.When first released, electronic gas monitors needed to be sent off-site periodically for calibration at a suitable accredited laboratory. Between calibrations, their accuracy was unknown. More recently, ‘bump testing’ and field calibration has become possible on the mine site, improving both reliability and safety as well as reducing the total number of gas monitors that need to be in use.There has been almost an overwhelming increase in the number and sophistication of gas monitor features in recent years. This paper reports on a case study into the key criteria that ventilation practitioners should be aware of with respect to the specification and selection of the most recent gas monitoring systems, and recommends good practice for site-based operation and calibration.CITATION:Brake, D J, 2015. "Belt and shaker conveyors, used singly or as combined units, have for many years been an integral part of many coal-mine haulage systems. The belt conveyor has also been used extensively as a main haulage unit in open-pit iron-ore mines of the Lake Superior district, particularly on the Mesabi Range. Few underground metal mines, however, either in the ferrous or non-ferrous branches of the mining industry, use the conveyors exclusively or even extensively for underground haulage. At present, only five iron-ore mines in the entire Lake Superior district have belt- or shaker-conveyor installations of any significant size. Of these mines, three are in the Crystal Falls-Iron River district of Michigan on the Menominee Range, one is on the Marquette Range near Ishpeming, Mich., and one is on the Mesabi Range near Keewatin, Minn.Results of the studies of tackless haulage in the Lake Superior district will not permit the establishment of any formula to prove or disprove the advantages of belt or shaker systems at all underground mines. The studies do show that trackless haulage can be used to advantage where the proper conditions exist. Advantages are particularly apparent when development can be planned sufficiently in advance of exploitation to permit installation of belts or shakers as part of the development program and where the systems are extended to include haulage in stopes as well as main entries.During the winter of 1947-48, the Bureau undertook a study of all of the underground ore conveying systems known to be in operation in the Lake Superior district for the purpose of making available to the entire mining industry the technologic data developed in the area. Because conditions that led to the installation of the belt and shaker conveying systems were often a function of the character of the deposit or the method of mining, a brief description of those conditions is included in this report.After a preliminary investigation into the extent to which trackless conveyors were employed in the district, it was found that a detailed study at five bites would result in fair appraisal of that method of haulage in the underground iron-ore mines.Each of the five significant installations is described separately in this report. In one instance, however, company policy does not permit identification of the mine wherein the conveying is done. In that instance the operation is designated as mine ""A"".Unless otherwise specified, all tonnage figures quoted herein are gross.The cooperation of officials of all of the companies operating underground mines in the Lake Superior district permitted successful completion of preliminary studies of mining practices and conveying systems.Special acknowledgment is made to R. The fact is that part of provided energy to aluminum production smelters will be lost as waste heat and it never used for aluminum production. One part of waste heat is escaping from the potroom exhaust gases, which was studied for possible recovery in a desalination plant to produce distilled water and the paper was presented in 2011 TMS Annual Meeting. However, it was shown that waste heat recovery plant to produce distilled water is highly profitable but the main fact is that the exhaust gases from potroom are highly corrosive, abrasive and dusty. The main challenge for desalination plant construction, which is using aluminum smelter exhaust gases as the main heat source, is the highly corrosive environment that makes the situation difficult and complicated for equipments design and plant construction. In this paper, we are trying to study a detailed investigation regarding the heat exchangers fouling, corrosion in heat exchangers including heat exchangers' material, how often we need to shut down the plant for maintenance or cleaning, and plant thermal efficiency with considering fouling."

Electrical apparatus and circuits began to be used in mines about 50 years ago. A search of the literature on mining reveals that in 1882, umping was being done by electricity in some aines of England. One account tells of a small electric locomotive being used in 1882 "to drive eight corves loaded with coal" in a mine near Dresden. In an account of his visit to some English mines, en American in 1892 mentions that he saw underground electric signals, lights, pumps, hoists, and one revolving- cutter-bar 19wall mining machine,. Among the carl electrical installa- tions in the United States was an electric locomotive in the Lykens Valley Coal Co. mine at Lykens Valley, Pa., in 1887. In 1889 the Sperry electric coal digger was being tried out. Tarce mining machines were placed in the Prospect mine, East Palestine, Ohio, in 1890. An electrical pumping plant was put in oneration during 1892 in the Woodward mine of the Delaware, Lacka- rahma & Western Railroad Co. Thus we Almost coincident with the proposed use of this new servant in under- ground workings, came the thought of making it safe in gassy mines. find an account of a design for a protected stationary electric mine lamp proposed by Edison in 1831. Enclosed-type motors rere developed in the United States and shiped to English collieries about 1903. From those early beginnings there has been continuous progress until to-day one finds hundreds of pieces of specially designed electrical apparatus distributed in American coal mines and in mines of nearly all important coal-producing countries. Along with introduction of this equipment grew the idea of the necessi- ty of government aid, in standardization. "Abstract -The Orostar and Scadding were two small gold mines owned and operated by Orofino Resources Limited. Conventional statistical treatment indicates an identical arithmetic mean grade of 0.22 oz/T Au for both mineable reserves. Further, the deposits are both shown to have cut weighted average reserve grade of 0.21 oz/T. Orostar mined out at 0.206 oz/T and Scadding at0.156 oz/TAu . The combined exploration and development database contained 1394 fire assays, more than enough for statistical confidence in a normal distribution. Therefore this study was initiated to determine, if possible, why the mill head grades were lower than the averages and to experiment with several methods to determine whether a reliable statistical mill head grade estimation method would emerge. Despite the identical reserve grades, distinct differences in the grade distribution histograms are present. By studying the arithmetic and log-normal grade distribution s, with some attention to South African practices, this paper reports on those differences which may account for the considerable divergence in the mill head grades. Furthermore, this study casts considerable doubt on the industry standard method of cut weighted averages.The global mill head grades of the two deposits have been derived from the arithmetic average grades by graphic means. This precise method of mill head grade prediction, if applied to complex orebodies, could permit selective grade control and result in direct cost savings by allowing the operator to detect false value stopes, benches or levels and emphasize reliable regions of not only gold mines, but also uranium or base metal deposits."
