Niobium and tantalum are considered critical materials because the increasing demand in the energy sector which is reliant on limited abundance of these two metals in minerals. Traditionally, niobium and tantalum mineralsare digested using hydrofluoric acid at moderate temperatures, producing oxy-fluorides which are separated by solvent extraction, involving the use ofhazardous chemicals. The increasing environmental pressures are forcing the industry to search for alternative low carbon processing methods. In this paper alkali roasting based separation and beneficiation, which is not well understood in the literature, is proposed, for which the kinetics and thermodynamic equilibria for the formation of sodium tantalate and niobate with sodium hydroxide are analyzedat the temperature range of 400ºC to 700ºC. The apparent activation energy of formation,changes from 31.0±0.8 to 22.3±1.2 kJ mol-1 and from 23.8±1.2 to110.2±12.8 kJ mol-1, for tantalate and niobate, respectively. The reaction mechanism is examined on the basis of the analysis of reaction products using X-ray powder diffraction (XRPD) and X-ray fluorescence (XRF).

Mining through in panel entries and the full face recovery method has been successfully practiced at U.S. Stwl, Mine 50. Suppat of the cut-through entries and recovery room is critical. Traditionally, concrete crib or fly ash cement backfill has been utilized. However, these traditional methods are not feasible at Mine 50 due to the difficulties of the plow face mining through these types of support. Recent development of new cable support systems provides an option for cut-through entry support. Mine 50 and Jennmar Corporation personnel have worked together to design and apply the cable systems in the cut-through entries and full face recovery room to eliminate standing support. To date, a number of full face recovery rooms and cut-through inpanel entries have been successfully mined. The results indicate that the cable systems combined with high capacity shields, have provided sufficient capacity to support the roof. Utilizing the Jennmar Finite Element Analysis (JFEA) computer program (Stankus and Guo, 1996), an analysis of the stress and roof deflection changes as the longwall gradually cut through was conducted. From the finite element analysis data, a supplemental support plan was designed. The history and experiences at Mine 50 are presented. Based on the case experiences and modifications made to the finite element analysis, an improved design criteria for future use has been formulated.

In conjunction with experiments to improve the particle size preparation of coal bore cores prior to washability testing, discrete-event breakage of coal, shale and homogeneous low-strength concrete cores was studied. Breakage of individual size classes by drop-shatter and by incremental tumbling in an end-over-end hand-driven tumbling cylinder revealed systematic changes in the breakage function, namely, that breakage in any size class diminishes as the number of events increases. The effect of the fines removal enhances the breakage of harder material (having lower grindability indices), but appears to have less effect for softer material.

Iron Road Limited (IRD) is currently developing the Central Eyre Iron Project (CEIP) at Warramboo on the Eyre Peninsula, South Australia. The project consists of a 30 year open pit mine, magnetite processing facilities, standard-gauge railway and deep water, Cape class capable port. Major South Australian government approvals have been received and funding arrangements confirmed.The 4.5 Bt Mineral Resource (3.7 Bt Ore Reserve), the largest in Australia and among the largest globally, is to be mined to produce 24 Mt/a high-grade, 67 per cent Fe, magnetite concentrate. This in-demand, premium product has a P80 of ~100 µm, suitable for both direct sinter feed and an additive in pelletising.The extensively drilled, homogeneous orebody is unique in both geology and mineralogy; only averaging 15 per cent Fe yet coarse-grained with almost negligible phosphorus and sulfur content. This has allowed significant opportunities to tailor the mining method to the orebody, utilising both optimised blasting as first stage comminution, as well as in-pit crushing and conveying (IPCC) to reduce the heavy haulage diesel fleet and optimise the pit shell.Approximately 1 Mt/d of total material, ore and waste, is required to be moved from the pit daily, introducing materials handling challenges, overcome by a flexible IPCC set-up, multiple overland conveyors and an exacting mine plan. Non-conventional waste and tailings storage is utilised to allow for significant water savings, progressive rehabilitation and minimisation of land impact.The processing facilities utilise both the magnetic and density properties of the magnetite to beneficiate the ore. The coarse-grained nature of the ore is exploited to minimise comminution yet still liberate a high quality product. Utilisation of modular construction methods allows risk reduction during construction and reduced pumping requirements during operation.This paper highlights the uniqueness of the CEIP, with focus on the mineralisation of the orebody, and the beneficial impacts this has on both the proposed mining method and processing. Evaluation and measurement of the influence of changes in conditions and electrolyte composition during early stages of a growing metal electrodeposit are crucial to predict changes in developing morphology. A galvanodynamic polarization technique was developed to reliably measure overpotentials for nickel electrodeposition from sulfate electrolyte. The validity of these polarization parameters as indicators of the relationships between changes in the electrolyte and resulting deposit morphology was evaluated for electrolytes of varying composition. Findings indicate that nucleation and plating overpotentials measured by the described technique can be used as indicative tools for monitoring, evaluating and ultimately improving control of the electrodeposition of nickel from sulfate electrolytes. The results predict that nickel deposits of desirable quality and morphology are obtained when plating overpotentials are higher than 700 mV vs. Ag/AgCl and nucleation overpotential is less negative than plating overpotential.

Fire is still a scourge of the mining industry, although many precautionary measures have been and are being taken to reduce the incidence of fires and to combat them. Generally, the success of fire extinguishment is directly proportional to the speed of attack, and the speed of attack in turn is dependent upon the availability of materials and trained personnel. Preparations for firefighting are frequently neglected because they are considered emergency needs and do not contribute directly to coal production. Fire incites panic--a fact often overlooked--but such chaos can be minimized by training people in the use of equipment and procedures. Heat, smoke, and fumes hamper the approach to a fire; however, a relatively new technique of attacking fires with high-expansion foam may well contribute greatly to firefighting. The foam is transported to a fire and used at a considerable distance, thus permitting the firefighters to work more safely.

The Bureau of Mines has successfully developed and tested a machine for spraying sealant onto coal mine roof and ribs. Dry material is transported pneumatically to a water-adding nozzle designed to provide dust-free spraying while being nonplugging and self-cleaning. The machine is self-cleaning, 35 inches in height, and capable of applying l/2-inch-thick coatings at over 1,000 ft2/hr.

The feasibility of smelting a Ni-Co-Cr-bearing laterite ore from southern Oregon was evaluated by the Bureau of Mines. The objective was to prepare a master alloy for subsequent stainless steel production. A mixture of the ore with suitable reductants and fluxes was smelted in a 50-lb-capacity single-phase ac electric furnace under sub- merged arc conditions. The smelting tests produced a metal in which most of the nickel was concentrated. High-chromium recoveries required an excess of carbon. The resulting metal alloys contain sufficient nickel for some stainless steels. Ferrochromium additions would be required to attain suitable chromium levels. This research was conducted under the Oregon Metals Initiative in cooperation with Walter B. Freeman.

This contribution examines the effect of feedstock sampling before the sorting stage of polyethylene terephtalate (PET) bottle recycling. Batches of waste PET bottles may contain non-PET bottles which need to be removed by sorting. Any residual presence of PVC is detrimental for the quality of products manufactured from recycled PET. The maximum tolerated concentration of PVC in cleaned PET is extremely low, which places high demands on the recovery of PVC achieved by sorting. To be confident of attaining the desired PET quality after sorting, acceptance sampling of truckloads of PET bottles may take place prior to sorting. It is shown that accounting for sampling uncertainty requires that the sorting process achieves a consistently high recovery of PVC bottles.CITATION:Glass, H J and Dominy, S C, 2017. With ever increasing demands on space in urban environments and smaller available footprints, buildings are being designed to increasing heights to meet the need. This case study discusses the increasing challenges in developing projects within urban environments with smaller available footprints and increasing building heights. The One, Canada’s tallest residential building under construction will stand at 85 storeys and is located at one of the most prominent and built up intersections in Toronto, Yonge Street and Bloor Street. This led to many challenges in design and construction of the shoring and foundation work, including the required design capacity of the foundations for the supertall building and proximity of the large diameter drilled shafts to the excavation shoring wall. This case history describes the shoring design option evaluation, performance, and lessons learned to date throughout construction of the building foundations within a small congested site. PROJECT OVERVIEW The One, Canada’s tallest residential building under construction by Mizrahi Developments, is a supertall building that will stand at 85 storeys and 306 m (1005 ft). The first 18 floors will be comprised of retail, restaurants, and hotel with luxury residential condominium units in the tower above. The project is located on the Southwest corner of Yonge Street and Bloor Street, one of the most prominent and built up intersections in Toronto. The L-shaped excavation measures 58 m by 47 m (190 ft to 154 ft) and ranges from 22 m to 28 m (72 ft to 92 ft) in depth with one internal corner projecting 11 m (36 ft) into the site.

The Coxheath copper mine is situated on the north side of the Coxheath hills and opposite the French Vale, at a distance of about 10 miles southwest of Sydney, Cape Breton county. The deposit was discovered in 1880, and the first work on the property was carried out with local capital. Lacer some Boston men became interested and formed a Company to finance the undertaking. This group operated the mine intermittently for approximately 20 years, spending close to one million dollars on the undertaking. Three shafts were sunk to depths of 110, 190, and 340 feet, and further underground workings to the extent of approximately one-half mile were driven. Also, an extensive surface programme was carried out. in which many test pits and hundreds of feet of trenches were dug, Early in the summer of 1928 the Arno Mines, Limited, optioned the property and immediately started an exploration campaign. A series of trenches were dug along the parallel vein system, and over 4,000 feet of diamond-drilling was done. The results obtained were so encouraging that a mining plant was erected in the fall of chat year and No. 2 shaft was drained. A complete new plant was installed, consisting of one 120 h.p. Fairbanks-Morse Diesel engine, direct connected to a Sullivan angle compound, air compressor; an 80 h .p. Leonard boiler, which supplies power for the 7 by 11 Ingersoll-Rand hoist; and a Sullivan class C steel sharpener and oil furnace. Two 250-gallon Cameron pumps, one operated by steam and the other by air, were placed in the mine so that, in case of a break-down, the mine would not be flooded.

Crosshole Sonic Logging (CSL) of drilled shafts requires 1.5-in (38-mm) or 2-in (51-mm) I.D. sonic access tubes to be installed inside the steel reinforcement cage. The sonic access tubes do not contribute to the structural capacity of the drilled shaft. The proposed use of Ischebeck TITAN T73/56 CSL/Hollow Threaded Rebar for Cross Hole Sonic Logging Access Tubes Combined with Longitudinal Concrete Reinforcing in Drilled Shafts (patent pending) is discussed as an alternative method of construction and CSL probe access. The T73/56 hollow threaded rebar/sonic access tube performs as a high strength rebar while at the same time creating a 2.2-in (56-mm) I.D. sonic access tube. The deformed high strength hollow bar provides better adhesion to concrete thus reducing the problem of debonding associated with smooth PVC and steel pipe. A cost comparison using conventional rebar with added sonic access tubes is discussed. The use of T73/56 CSL/Hollow Threaded Rebar as a value engineering alternative can reduce both material and labor costs for drilled shaft construction and can provide an advantage where anchor bolt cages and longitudinal reinforcing create congestion.

Dr. K. A. Clark: No one will doubt the statement of fact that, during drilling operations through the bituminous sand beds in the Mildred-Ruth Lakes area, the core-barrel was found to contain bitumen with minor amounts of sand instead of bituminous sand. But many will doubt the interpretation of this fact as meaning that beds of bitumen occur interstratified with the bituminous sand beds. They will prefer to hold faith in the laws of physics, which deny that sand will float on oil or that fluid under pressure will not flow away through a permeable medium, until it is proved that the appearance of the oil in the core-barrel was not due to circumstances surrounding the drilling of the bituminous sand beds. The implication of the interpretation that sand is floating on oil is clear and it is unacceptable. Bituminous sand is unconsolidated sand more' or less saturated with a viscous oil. It is as difficult to conceive of bituminous sand lying on top of a body of the viscous oil as it is to conceive of unconsolidated sand more or less saturated with water lying on top of a body of water. The only difference between the two concepts is that the oil is viscous whereas the water is fluid. Oil-soaked sand placed on viscous oil would, when released, sink through the oil slowly, whereas water-soaked sand would sink through the water quickly.

The stabilization of austenite in Fe-Ni alloys against martensitic transformation after reversion has been attributed' to the lattice imperfections remaining from previous transformation. More recently, however, such stabilization has been associatedzy3 with compositional changes which occur in martensite during slow heating. Dislocation arrangements in deformed austenitic stainless steels strongly influence transformation to martensite on quenching.4 Therefore, it is of interest to observe the transformation behavior of stainless steel after reversion, especially since previous studies have been confined to Fe-Ni alloys. The transformation-product morphology also differs in the two iron-alloy systems;6 plate martensite forms in the latter while stainless steel transforms to lath-type martensite. Samples of Fe-16 wt pct Cr-12 wt pct Ni (maximum C + N = 0.005 wt pct, 0 = 0.02 wt pct), prepared by vacuum melting and casting from high-purity components, were annealed at 900°C for 24 hr, after cold rolling to produce a 40-p grain diameter. The M, temperature of this alloy is -80°C and samples are fully austenitic after annealing. The amount of martensite present after quenching, annealing, and requenching was determined magnetically, to within 0.01 wt pct, using a vibrating specimen magnetometer. Nearly 14 pct of martensite forms during the initial quench in 1 min at -196°C. Two-min and 2-hr anneals were done in air and in evacuated quartz capsules, respectively. All specimens were electro-polished before making the magnetic measurements.

Introduction A resource of more than 122 Gt (134 billion st) of minable trona and mixed trona and halite underlies an area of about 3400 km2 (1300 sq miles) west of Green River, WY (Culbertson, in preparation) (Fig. 1). In 1982, the total domestic consumption of soda ash (refined trona) was 6 Mt (6.7 million st) (Kostick, 1983). About 90% of this came from Wyoming trona. This enormous deposit occurs in the Wilkins Peak Member of the Green River Formation that is of Eocene age. This formation is derived from sediments deposited in a large lake named Gosiute. Lake Gosiute occupied the Green River Basin in southwestern Wyoming some 38 to 54 million years ago. The Wilkins Peak Member represents a restricted, evaporite-rich cycle of deposition when the trona deposits were formed. A total of 42 trona beds are known. Of these, 25 are of sufficient thickness and extent to be considered minable (Culbertson, in preparation). The production of sodium compounds from the trona deposits in the Wilkins Peak Member began in 1896 when wells were drilled within the present boundaries of the town of Green River. The purpose of the drilling was for extraction of sodium carbonate brines. Sodium carbonate (sal soda) was removed from these brines at a plant in Green River. Bedded trona was discovered in 1938 in a core from an oil well drilled south of Westvaco. In 1947, the underground mining of trona began. Production has continued from 1948 to date. Currently, five companies are mining trona and producing soda ash from the Wilkins Peak Member in Wyoming. Additionally, Allied Chemical Co. mines and processes trona for Church and Dwight's sodium bicarbonate (baking soda) operation in Green River. Competition in the soda ash industry depends primarily on the efficiency of mining and refining, allowing for lower-cost production. Newer plants and mine designs should increase efficiency. Solution mining holds promise as an even lower-cost method of mining. Employment in the soda ash industry is declining since the newer mining and refining methods are less labor intensive. Declines in employment, however, may be offset as production increases. Due to the large resource, the availability of minable trona should not be a problem for perhaps hundreds of years. Metallurgical Oil Sludge (MOS) is a byproduct created in the process of steelmaking. More than a million tons of MOS are generated each year throughout the world. The material contains hazardous components such as heavy metals and pathogenic organics, which can cause serious environmental problems and health issues. Landfill, combustion, and pyrolysis have been investigated for the disposal of MOS. However, these methods are unsatisfactory since they are unable to reach the clean environment goal. In this study, we investigate the possibility of using MOS as a reductant in a high temperature metallurgical process. The results are reported and discussed.

"Froth flotation is the most widely used method of separating fine coal, especially coal with coking properties. However, froth flotation is not efficient for treating ultrafine coal and coarse coal particles. Our previous fundamental test results demonstrated that cavitation-generated nanobubbles around 700 nm in diameter can significantly improve coal and phosphate flotation performance over a wide particle size range. In this study, the effect of nanobubbles on the flotation performance of different particle size fractions of coal was investigated using a bank of 10-L flotation cells, a specially designed 50-mm inside diameter column and a 152-mm inside diameter column. It was found that nanobubbles that were either directly formed on or subsequently attached to the surface of coal particles during the froth flotation process improved flotation efficiency. The use of nanobubbles in a bank of mechanical cells flotation and column flotation significantly increased the flotation recovery at a given product grade. Nanobubbles increased the flotation rate constants of different coal particle sizes. The presence of nanobubbles in flotation slurry could extend the lower and the upper particle size limits for effective coal flotation.IntroductionFor minus 0.6 mm fine coal or minus 0.15 mm ultrafine coal particles, froth flotation is known to be the most efficient and the most cost-effective separation technique. However, flotation efficiency decreases sharply with ultrafine and relatively coarse coal particles. Studies have shown that the low flotation efficiency of ultrafine particles is mainly due to the low probability of bubble-particle collision (Yoon et al., 1989; Ralston and Dukhin, 1999). Enhanced flotation of fine and ultrafine coal can be achieved by increasing collision and attachment probabilities.The top size of particles that can be recovered by flotation depends on the combination of mineral properties and flotation devices. Turbulence in flotation devices is an important factor that affects the stability of bubble-particle aggregates. Even in the flotation of fine particles, bubble-particle detachment can significantly influence the kinetics of flotation taking place in mechanical cells, which provide intensive turbulent agitation (Deglon et al., 1999). Coarse particle flotation is more difficult, because increased agitation is required to maintain particles in suspension and coarse particles are more likely to detach under turbulent conditions (Mankosa and Kohmuench, 2002; Soto and Barbery, 1991). More efficient attachment of particles and improved flotation rate has been observed when tiny bubbles coexist with conventional-sized flotation bubbles (Attalla et al., 2000; Tao et al., 2010; Fan et al., 2010a, b, c, d; Fan et al., 2012)."

"Mill liner wear is a major cost item in the mining industry and there is continuous research to prolong the life of the liners. Over the years it has become apparent that even though high-chromium white cast irons are highly efficient as abrasion-resistant materials, a combination of wear resistance and fracture strength remains difficult to achieve. Increasing the hardness of the high-chrome white cast iron (HCWCI), which improves the resistance to abrasion wear, is often accompanied by a deterioration in fracture strength. Operational conditions inside the mill require that the liner should be made of highly wear-resistant material with some fracture strength. Vanadium additions ranging from 0.2 to 3 wt% were made to HCWCI in an attempt to refine the microstructure. It was found that an increase in vanadium content promotes grain refinement. A content of 1.5-3 wt% gave the best results as measured by the maximum breaking strength.IntroductionOver the years it has become apparent that even though high-chromium white cast irons are highly efficient abrasion-resistant material, a combination of excellent wear resistance and fracture strength remains difficult to achieve. The exceptional wear resistance of highchromium white cast iron (HCWCI) is attributed to hard chromium carbides embedded in an austenitic/martensitic/pearlitic matrix. When the chromium contents exceed 12 wt%, interconnected MC3-type carbides of conventional cast irons are replaced by rodshaped and isolated M7C3 carbides (Powell, 1980), leading to an improvement in the impact toughness, ductility and fatigue resistance. However, the main M7C3 carbides in HCWCI are hard and brittle and can provide an easy path for crack propagation. This limits the applications of HCWCI, particularly in severe impact conditions. Most operations involving HCWCI are in crushing and grinding and the life of a part/liner is limited by its wear resistance. However, improving the wear resistance of HWCI comes at the cost of a significant reduction in fracture strength. Concerns about premature failure of HCWCI mill liners in the mining industries prompted a study to improve the wear resistance and mechanical properties of HCWCI."

"Abstract: Direct ?otation of oxidized zinc-lead ore is characterized by recovery of zinc and lead only around 55% and 50%, respectively. Mineralogical analysis shows that the sample used in the present study is a carbonate hosted zinc-lead ore, with a zinc and lead carbonate content that accounts for 80.14% and 75.63% of the total minerals, respectively. The carbonate hosted zinc-lead ore was hydrothermally sulfidized with elemental sufur and the experimental data indicated that under the conditions employed up to 75% zinc and 82% lead sulfidation extent were achieved. As a result of pre-sulfidation followed by flotation, the recoveries of zinc and lead into flotation concentrate were over 90%. A flotation concentrate was obtained with 52% Zn and 37% Pb from the materials which was treated by sulfidation.IntroductionSulfide ores are the primary source of zinc and lead, and they are becoming depleted; thus, metallurgical investigators are interested in using abundant oxidized zinc-lead ore reserves. The high-grade zinc-lead oxidized ore, which normally has a zinc content higher than 15%, can be disposed of by acid leaching and electrolysis. However, the low-grade ore, which has a zinc content lower than 10%, is difficult to smelt with pyrometallurgy and hydrometallurgy, and the processes are very complicated and expensive in terms of production flow and energy consumption. Therefore, making the low-grade oxidized zinc-lead ore more beneficial has become more important in recent years. Flotation is the most common process, and the primary method of recovering zinc and lead from sulfide or oxide minerals. It is well known that there is a difference between sulfurized and oxidized minerals regarding their separation by flotation. Flotation of zinc and lead oxidized minerals is extremely complex because of the similarities in the physicochemical and surface chemistry of the constituent minerals. There are no known direct-acting collectors capable of producing single metal concentrates [1-3]."

The hazards which naturally prevail in underground coal mines, always severe and unpredictable due to the loosely-consolidated strata in which coal is frequently found, are increased by the commonly-occurring combination of coal dust, methane, and explosives. It was recognized by the mid-nineteenth century that coal dust was the basic factor contributing to disastrous explosions killing hundreds of miners, and that the ignition of methane gas was often the source of the coal dust explosions. It was apparent that preventing the ignition of methane was a critical part of avoiding these disasters, and it was also apparent that one cause of such ignitions was the firing of explosives. In addition, it was found that dust explosions were often initiated by blown-out shots of explosives in the absence of methane.
