The axial capacity of step tapered bored piles in sand was examined by field tests at one site in Kuwait. Two straight piles, and two step tapered piles were load tested in compression to failure. All four piles were 3 m deep. The straight piles were 0.2 m in diameter. The step tapered piles had a diameter of 0.3 m for the upper segment which extended up to 40% of the pile length changing to 0.2 m diameter for the lower section. The soil profile consists of medium to dense sand with minor cementation and no groundwater was encountered. Both the ultimate bearing capacity and the settlement at working loads were examined. The axial capacity of the step tapered piles was greater, and the settlement at working loads was less, compared with the straight shaft piles. The increase in capacity is mainly attributed to the added side friction along the larger diameter top segment of the shaft.

The Mineral Resources Institute (MRI) has developed a unique process for selective fatty acid flotation of phosphate minerals from siliceous ores. The process takes advantage of preferential adsorption and high reactivity of fatty acid collectors towards apatite over silica surfaces under slightly acidic conditions of pH 5-6.5. The process was successful in upgrading various phosphate samples from Florida and North Carolina containing 7.7-15.3% P205 and 62.3- 77.2% Insol to concentrates assaying 28.1-33.1 % P205 and 4.1-9.9% Insol with high P2O5 recovery of 81.8-92.2%. Depending on the type of silica impurities present one or more cleaning steps, with or without sodium silicate, would be required to improve the grade of the rougher phosphate concentrate.

The concepts of sea floor spreading and plate tectonics provide more logical explanations of some geologic processes than were possible a few years ago. I plan to premise my discussion of the regional features of Philippine porphyry copper deposits on this tectonic basis, recognizing that parts of the picture can be explained in other ways, but in the belief that this is the best explanation of the whole. The sequence of events which results in the formation of Porphyry deposits (Figure 1) can be summarized as the result of collision of crustal plates, subduction of the oceanic plate, emplacement of a serpentine ultrabasic diapir, formation of a dioritic magma at depths of 300 to 500 km, rise of the magma to a sub crustal or intra-crustal chamber, eruption of andesitic volcanoes, emplacement of diorite or differentiation of the magma into more acidic products, multiple intrusion of hypabyssal rocks and hydro-

During initial mining operations at the Colosseum gold mine, discrepancies between the average blasthole grades and mill-head grades were quite large. In December 1987, mill-head grades averaged 39% lower than corre¬sponding estimates from the blastholes. The correlation between average blasthole grade and mill-head grade had an r-value of 0.015. The magnitude of the discrepancy and the lack of correspondence between estimated and actual grades led to a series of investigations of the sampling system, the effect of blast movement of the ore, and the estimation methodology. The discrepancy between blasthole grades and mill-head grades had been reduced by about half on a percentage basis at the conclusion of these studies. Ongoing studies have produced changes that reduced this discrepancy to its present level of less than 10%. Geology The Colosseum mine is within the Clark Mountain mining district about 68 km (42 miles) southwest of Las Vegas, NV in San Bernardino County, CA. Gold mineralization at the deposit is hosted in two 152 m x 213 m (500 ft x 700 ft) interconnected, rhyolitic intrusive breccia pipes that intruded Pre¬cambrian crystalline basement rocks and overlying Paleozoic marine sedimentary rocks. Subsequent erosion (deroofing) of all of the Paleozoic section and a portion of the Precambrian section has exposed the pipes to the present level (probably a significant depth in the original breccia pipe system). Lithologies exhibited within the breccia pipe complexes include rhyolitic felsite, and breccias of felsite and wall/ country rock. Breccia types grade from felsite plus Precambrian granite-gneiss fragments in an aphanitic felsite matrix to crosscutting breccias of felsite, Precambrian granite-gneiss, and Paleozoic sedimentary rocks in a matrix of finely comminuted material of the same composition. All the lithologies in and around the breccia pipes exhibit moderate to intense quartz-sericite-pyrite alteration, with sericite and pyrite the dominant visual alteration minerals. Gold at the Colosseum mine is generally submicroscopic and associated with sulfide mineralization, chiefly pyrite. It occurs as free gold, with minor alloyed silver. It is primarily in contact with pyrite in fractures or along pyrite grain edges. Secondarily, it appears as isolated particles in quartz and other gangue minerals but spatially always close to pyrite, and rarely as particles encased in euhedral pyrite. The pyrite mineralization and minor base metal sulfides occur in three distinct styles: as disseminations, as open space or vein/fracture filling, and in breccia clasts replacing dolomite. The pyrite megascopically ranges from absent to 30% of rock volume within the breccia pipes. Although the gold at Colosseum is apparently spatially and geochemically associated with pyrite, there is only a general proportional relationship between pyrite content and gold content. Sometimes, a high volume percentage of pyrite has only geochemically anomalous gold. This makes visual pyrite only a general grade control tool and not a specific tool. This further makes the ore control process at Colosseum all the more difficult. Initial grade control procedure Initial grade control was based on blasthole samples collected in two stages by an "automatic" sample collection device (rocket sampler). A sample was collected for the top 3 m (10 ft) in a hole. The bag was then changed so that a sample was collected for the lower 3 m (10 ft). Each sample was prepared and fire assayed to determine the grade. Large discrepancies were sometimes noted in the assays of top and bottom samples. The viscosity of the CaO-SiO2-xMnO-yCaF2 slags (C/S=1.0; x=10, 40%; y=0 to 15%) was measured to clarify the effect of CaF2 on the viscous flow of molten slags at high temperatures. Furthermore, the Raman spectra of the quenched glass samples were quantitatively analyzed to investigate the structural role of CaF2 in a depolymerization of silicate networks. The critical temperature of the slags abruptly increased at 15%CaF2, which was confirmed to originate from a crystallization of cuspidine using XRD analysis. The viscosity of the slags continuously decreased by CaF2 addition in the 10%MnO system, whereas the viscosity of the 40%MnO system was not significantly affected by CaF2 addition. The effect of CaF2 on the viscosity of the slags was quantitatively analyzed using micro-Raman spectra of quenched glass samples accompanying with a concept of silicate polymerization index, Q3/Q2 ratio. A polymerization index continuously decreased with increasing content of CaF2 in the 10%MnO system, whereas it was not affected by CaF2 in the 40%MnO system. Consequently, the bulk thermophysical property of the CaO-SiO2-MnO-CaF2 slags was quantitatively correlated to the structural information.

Proper handling of the radioactive fraction associated with the production of rare earth elements (REEs) in the mining industry is essential for a sustainable environment and human health. Actinides, such as uranium and thorium, have similar chemical properties to REEs, and are often co-dissolved in current hydrometallurgical processes. This causes radioactive contamination of the infrastructure through the extraction cycle. The present study optimizes, through experimental design, a sequential leaching procedure with Na2CO3/NaHCO3 and HCl for the rapid and selective dissolution of REEs and actinides. Optimization focuses on the main operating parameters (time, temperature, and concentration); different types of minerals, REE composites, and ores; on achieving maximal leaching yield; and on minimizing dissolution of the gangue metals (Fe, Si, and Ca). The final sequential procedure was rapid (1 h), effective, and led to the segregation of Th, U, and REEs with limited dissolution of the gangue metals.

This paper gives a brief overview of impacts of coal blending on coal-fired power plants performance and discuses the preliminary results of an on-going study aimed at evaluating the effect of coal properties on the effectiveness, compatibility and thermal reactivity of coal blends. Plant survey studies reported no significant impacts on an existing plant designed for a high rank coal when switched to a blend of low- and high- rank coal. However, slight modification of some aspects (handling, fuel storage/stockpile, transportation, preparation, and general housekeeping) of plant design and operation may be necessary. The preliminary results of an on-going study at the Mineral Industry Research Laboratory shows that more compatible and better blends could be made from coals where ranks are closer than from those where ranks are far apart.

Concern exists about the potential release of metals from the proposed mining operation at Martha Hill to the Ohinemuri River. Speculation on possible impacts is fuelled by the dearth of published data on existing metal levels not only for this river system but for streams throughout the Coromandel. At first sight this lack of data is surprising given the apparent interest in this subject and the fact that future mining activity in this region has been a possibility since at least 1979. That such a situation has arisen is not altogether unexpected given the difficulties faced by various organisations, including the mining industry, in determining metal levels which are generally acknowledged to be low. This paper presents data for a number of stations in the vicinity of the proposed operation; it explains the analytical procedures which were adopted and the rationale for them and relates the information which has been obtained to water quality criteria.

Computer simulation has become an everyday practice in thennodynamic and materials research. Advanced thennochemical algorithms take into account heat transfer effects and salient reaction kinetics when applied for process models. In particular, the combination of mass transfer or overall reaction rates with multi-component Gibbs energy minimisation provides an effective tool for simulation of industrial thennochemical processes and processing of materials. In this work the combination of rate factors with the Gibbs energy technique was studied by using the novel program ChemSheet, which operates through Microsoft's Excel® spreadsheets. Such processes as, for example, CVD of pure silicon production, titania pigment manufacturing, vapour pressure of Mercury in amalgams (in Hg-Iamp manufacturing) and melting behaviour of low-temperature alloys have been modelled. Provided that the thennochemical data is available simulations can be performed with any thennodynamic system. The calculation can be performed as an affinity study without a particular reactor model or with a specific reactor scheme.

The aim of this paper is to present the operative solutions devised and then adopted to implement the underexcavation (soil extraction) of the Tower of Pisa, by means of soil extraction. The intervention has been performed by the Consorzio Progetto Torre di Pisa, a joint venture made of five qualified Italian companies (Trevi S.p.A. , Rodio S.p.A., Italsonda S.p.A., Ismes -Enel Hydro S.p.A., Bonifica S.p.A.), selected for their experience in the field of monitoring and restoration of monuments, structural design, foundation engineering and specialised works in underground conditions. Since 1991 the Consorzio has been charged with the specific task of implementing, within the contractual frame of a Concession, all the decisions made by the International Multidisciplinary Commission appointed by the Italian Government the previous year, with the aim at solving the «problem» of the Tower, strengthening the structure and stabilising its foundation. The Trevi Group, which is represented by Trevi S.p.A. in the above mentioned Consorzio, has given and is giving its direct and constant contribution and is engaged in supplying the special equipment to the operation and the drilling technology which has been successfully adopted to date.

The Manto Verde mine is found in the coastal ranges of the Atacama desert, 1000 km north of Santiago, Chile . The deposit is a fault-breccia specularite-oxide copper mineralisation hosted by the Jurassic andesites of La Negra Formation. It is located in a tensional fault that joins twoparallel arms of the Atacama Fault. The mine is in feasibility study: reserves are of the order of 60 Mt at 0.9 wt per cent soluble copper; mining will be undertaken at a rate of 11 000 tpd utilising an open pit and the ore will be heap-leached with acidified sea water, with copper recovery and by SX/EW.

The mining industry has wrestled to develop methods for assessing the ‘sustainability’ value of a mining project and indicators of ‘sustainability success’. A methodology for the evaluation of sustainability of a mining project using the Multiple Accounts Analysis (MAA) system was developed. The MAA is a platform for engagement of stakeholders and for the assessment of site-specific alternatives based on both qualitative and quantitative indicators of success.

"The bending tensile stress occurs in the ground improvements when external forces are applied to the column and wall shaped ground improvements. Therefore, in the design of the column and wall shaped ground improvements, the tensile properties of the cement-treated soils become a predominant factor when the external forces induce bending moments. Then the tensile properties are required to design the ground improvements rationally.Three points bending tests are conducted to investigate the bending tensile properties of cement-treated soils in this study. Cement-treated soils mixed in a laboratory are used in the bending tests. The test specimens are prepared with the several mixing properties to study the relationship between the tensile properties and unconfined compressive strength qu. Bending tensile strength Tfb and fracture energy Gf of the cement-treated soils are evaluated from the load-deflection curves obtained from the bending tests. The experimental results indicate that Tfb and Gf are approximately proportional to qu.INTRODUCTIONThe ground improvement by deep mixing has been widely used for structure foundations, retaining walls and liquefaction mitigations. Recently column and wall shaped ground improvements by deep mixing method have been applied for economical reason. When external forces are applied to the column and wall shaped ground improvements, the bending tensile stress occurs in the ground improvements. Therefore, in the design of the column and wall shaped ground improvements, the tensile properties of the cement-treated soils become a predominant factor when the external forces induce bending moments. Then the tensile properties are required to design the ground improvements appropriately.Namikawa et al. (2007) conducted the finite element analysis to investigate the dynamic behavior of the lattice-shaped improved ground for liquefaction mitigation. In the analysis, an improved ground consisting of several grids in a line was chosen to study the basic behavior of the lattice-shaped improved ground. Fig. 1 shows a example of calculated tensile failure zones in the improved soil during the earthquake. Half of one section of the improved soil consisting of two grids in a line for the 8 m × 8 m grid was modeled in the case. In Fig. 1, the failure occurs at the bottom and upper corners of the improved soil grid. The analysis result indicates that the constitutive model which can appropriately evaluate tensile failure behavior of cement-treated soils is required to evaluate the performance of the lattice-shaped improved ground for liquefaction mitigation. In the analysis, the elasto-plastic model developed by Namikawa and Mihira (2007) was adopted for the cement-treated soil behavior. The elasto-plastic model can suitably describe the tensile failure behavior of cement-treated soils. In the elasto-plastic model, tensile fracture energy is adopted to determine a tensile softening relationship because it is difficult to directly measure the stress-strain relationship after the peak stress state in direct tension tests. However there is little experimental study on the tensile fracture energy of cement-treated soils."

"In this paper, the results of a research study on airborne dust transport in a full scale simulated longwall face are presented. The simulated longwall face was set up in the Lake Lynn Laboratory mine of the U.S. Bureau of Mines to conduct experiments under controlled conditions. The controlled parameters in the experiments were the dust dispersion rate, dust size distribution, density of the dust, air velocity, and the rate of travel of the dust generating source. The analyses of the experimental results on mass concentrations, particle size distributions, and real-time respirable dust concentrations are discussed. There are definite spatio-temporal trends between the location of the shearer, the concentration at any location in the face, and the dust generation rates. The size-consist and density characteristics of the source dust, the air velocity in the face, and the air leakage into the gobs all affect the concentration. INTRODUCTIONA detailed experimental study on the characteristics of longwall dust cloud in operating longwall faces has been reported by Ramani, Qin, and Jankowski (1991). The study indicated that there are several important factors whose effects on dust transport in longwall faces need to be further investigated. In an operating longwall face, the effect of these parameters could not be easily isolated as control over the affecting parameters is not readily possible. In a simulated longwall face, however, these parameters can be controlled. Therefore, as a follow-up to the field study, a series of controlled experiments were conducted in a full scale simulated longwall face in the Lake Lynn Laboratory mine of the U.S. Bureau of Mines [Qin, 1992]. Specific aspects which were addressed during the experimental design phase included determining the types of samples to be collected, selecting proper instruments to collect these samples, and developing detailed sampling and time-study plans to correlate the dust concentrations with face activities. Two types of dust--anthracite and bituminous--were used. Dust dispersion rate into the air as well as the source dust particle size distribution were documented. Control was exercised over both air velocity at the face and air leakage along the longwall face. During experiments, the dust source was moved to simulate the shearer movement at operating longwall faces. Detailed descriptions of the design of experiments, experimental results, and data analyses follow in the subsequent sections."

A process has been developed to treat the copper gold ores from the Guelb Moghrein mine in Mauritania. The process consists of pressure leaching the sulphide concentrate, neutralising with the oxide ore, recovery of copper by SX/EW and of gold by cyanidation of the autoclave residue. This paper focuses on the pressure leaching step, and presents data from bench and pilot plant test programs. In particular, attention is drawn to the effects of temperature, grind size, neutralisation, retention time and solution recycle on the kinetics of copper dissolution from various flotation concentrates. Likely leach mechanisms are briefly discussed.

DURING the summer of 1953, test work commenced at the Sullivan Concentrator with a view to the modification of filtration practice by the inclusion of wet cyclone classification of the lead concentrates, with separate filtration of the underflow and overflow products. Formerly, practice was conventional and the equipment employed comprised one 50-foot diameter thickener ?with the underflow routed via a 20-foot stock tank to two 8-foot by 12-foot Oliver filters. Heating of the filter feeds to 40° C. and the use of mechanical slappers on the filter drums ?have both been standard features of Sullivan practice for years. Both of these have been retained. Currently (February, 1956), lead concentrates are being classified into sands and slimes by 12-inch cyclones with the underflow, at 75 per cent solids, being fed to No. 1 Oliver filter. The overflow is thickened to 75 per cent solids and filtered separately by a No. 2 Oliver filter . The tonnage split is approximately two of underflow to one of overflow. The overflow contains 75 to 80 per cent of the total minus I 500 mesh slimes in the feed.
