Most zinc concentrates contain some silver and varying amounts of such valuable trace elements as gold, indium, germanium and gallium. With increasing similarities in plant installations, the predominance of electrolyte process and the increasing environmental constraints on iron disposal, it is essential that zinc smelters optimize the recovery of any valuable elements in their feed stocks. The process options, to date, of smelting, flotation or leaching of silver-rich leach residues cannot be applied economically to all installations. It is therefore necessary that new innovative processes, to recover silver and other valuable metals from relatively low grade feeds, be developed. This paper attempts to place this strategy in the context of today's constraints and will also provide a simple evaluation tool for any process alternatives.

The influence of semicharcoal substitution for coke breeze on sintering performance was investigated by pot-grate sintering test. At a fixed fuel ratio, sinter productivity and strength decreased with the substitution increasing from 0 to 100% due to better combustibility. To enhance the utilization efficiency of 100% semicharcoal, sintering parameters (moisture and suction pressure) was adjusted. With the moisture increasing, sinter performance of 100% semicharcoal increased because of the suppression of semicharcoal incomplete combustion. As the moisture further increasing to 9.0%, sinter quality gave rise to a decrease trend. The results also showed that the increase of suction pressure was benefit for the increase of heat transfer rate, leading to the improvement of heat utilization energy. Measures to enhance magnetite oxidation during sintering are discussed based on current understanding of the fundamentals that control the sintering process.

In the excavation works of some deep foundation pits within the boundaries of Guang­dong Province of China, though some measures, such as steel sheet piles, diaphragm walls, etc. were taken to protect the walls, the construction of the excavation works was often accompanied by damage of buildings and public facilities, surface settelment. sand boil and collapse of piles. When these happened, only chemical grouting could be used as the most efficient measure for rushing to deal with or rescue the emergencies. Besides, the application of chemical grouting protection wall technique also palys a very important role under the geologic conditions of the coastal areas of Guangdong Province, when applied in the mucky oystershell layer wealthy in water and the deep mud layer, it can not only achieve good results, but also reduce the cost significantly. In this paper, we discuss the water-tight and earth retaining functions of chemical grouting protection wall in weak formation, and introduce the applicable ranges of chemical grouting protection wall in the excavation of deep foundation pits. Some technological principles and design considerations of the construction of chemical grouting protection wall are presented. Different types of protection wall are also introduced.

Ground freezing has been used for the sinking of deep mine shafts for more than 140 years. While advances in refrigeration technology have refined the overall freezing operation, the basic ground freezing concept remains the same. This paper presents an overview of the ground freezing process and the unique advantages that ground freezing brings to shaft construction. Design and construction considerations, including instrumentation and monitoring, are discussed. Case studies are presented to illustrate ground freezing applications for mine shaft installation.

"An existing landslide located at the southeast corner of the Telluride Regional Airport has been in an active state of failure for several years. The presence of the landslide has represented an on-going liability for the Airport, the Federal Aviation Administration and the Colorado Department of Transportation. A catastrophic failure of this landslide occurring in a manner similar to that which occurred at the Airport in 1987 has posed an on-going threat to closing Colorado State Highway 145 south and below the slide area. The existing landslide has been characterized as a series of multiple failed block areas located downhill of the airport runway that have occurred in severely weathered Mancos Shale.A total of 12 alternatives were evaluated to mitigate the landslide, including the preferred alternatives of either partial or total landslide removal. However, prior development has left essentially no place on the airport property that would allow for the disposal of the landslide debris for either the total or partial removal alternatives, and the closest off-site disposal area was approximately 40 miles from the site. As a result, in-situ stabilization of the landslide, including a primary system of isolated tie-back anchor plates with strand anchors, and a secondary system of high strength steel mesh and intermediate anchors was selected for the ultimate design of the project to stabilize the landslide in place.For design purposes, geotechnical characterization of the slide area was accomplished through geological mapping, conventional borehole exploration and geophysics using multiple electrical resistivity. The paper discusses the design process utilized and the unique challenges faced one-third of the way through construction when discovery of a survey error required redesign of the entire landslide mass stabilization system using the prefabricated anchors that had already been delivered to the project.INTRODUCTIONTelluride Colorado is located at the toe of the Colorado Rocky Mountains on the western slope. The Telluride Regional Airport is located on Deep Creek Mesa about 5 miles west of the town of Telluride.The landslide is located at the southeast corner of the airport just below an abandoned portion of the quarry access road on a south facing slope. The quarry access road is located below the elevation of the runway and outside the elk fence that surrounds the air traffic area of the airport property. Since the reconstruction of the runway, the access road to the quarry and the construction access road for the reconstruction of the airport runway and safety area were rerouted to stable ground north of the previous access road location and off of the head scarp of the landslide."

"Intensive mechanization and automation in the LKAB, Kiruna Mine in Sweden have resulted in substantial rise in productivity and decrease in production cost. Capital investment in a modern mine today averages a considerable amount per miner and costs increase with requirements for more efficient methods and equipment. Equipment reliability becomes more and more important. Equipment maintenance requirements are directly proportional to equipment reliability and grade of availability. Weaknesses in the equipment result in unnecessary costs with regard to maintenance which can add up considerably per year, but of more importance are the costs caused by equipment breakdown. These breakdowns disturb or interrupt the production and often cause damage to other parts of the system. This paper discusses the important parameters involved in mine car wheel wear and the design principles of wheels, axle suspension and track.IntroductionTrains operating in an underground mine do not follow the same standard of performance as trains operating on surface railways. The differences in speed, curve radius and environment require different methods of calculation for underground train systems, and when judging the parameters involved one must keep in mind these differences at all times.While surface railway technology was given all possible attention over the last century no one was seriously looking into underground rail haulage in the sense of rail vehicles performance on the track until LKAB in 1975 started to question the methods of calculations used. Even though LKAB by then attained mine car maintenance cost that was 1/6 to 1/10 of other mining companies they were not pleased with the situation. The objective for the ensuing engineering work was to derive the reasons for wear and breakdowns. Once those reasons were established, the design of a completely new generation of mine cars could start. The result of these efforts were beyond all expectations. The maintenance cost on mine cars had been reduced to 1/15 of prior car generation which already had comparatively low cost.The most significant cost savings were made on wheel maintenance, which earlier represented 50% to 55% of car maintenance. Wheel life was increased from an average of 3 to 30 years or more.The LKAB theories around wheel wear are described in the following report."

Accidents involving powered haulage and mobile equipment like haul trucks are a major safety concern in the U.S. mining industry. They account for more than 50 percent of surface mine fatalities each year [1]. A recent National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) analysis of 91 fatal incidents identified loss of vehicle control and situational awareness as key contributors [2]. However, the first-hand perspectives of operators are often missing, emphasizing the need for deeper insights into operators’ decisionmaking, lessons learned, sensory cues and mental strategies used during near-miss events. The findings in this analysis will help inform the development of training and safety solutions to prevent or reduce haul truck accidents.

This paper presents a numerical simulation method to predict rock fragmentation and to verify a fracture mechanism by bench blasting. The rock fragmentation, which has been used as a means of the index to estimate the effect of bench blasting, affects the expenses for loading, conveyance and crushing of blasting muck piles. The developed numerical simulation method is based on the finite element method and fracture mechanics and includes the re-meshing procedure to express the fracture process of the rock mass. This paper discusses a procedure for a determination of size distributions of the results, which were calculated by numerical simulation, including the tines.

Bill S.1431 for the creation of a Department of Natural Resources has received a propitious hearing before the Senate Committee on Government Operations. Interior Secretary Rogers C. B. Morton was one of the prominent witnesses who testified in favor. The department had been proposed, Morton said, with "the conviction that the development of all natural resources would be harmonized with the most practicable possible means to protect and preserve the environment, consistent with the social and economic needs of the Nation." Another opinion on the pro side came from Atomic Energy Commissioner Clarence E. Larson, who said that a "total picture" had become essential to the establishment of a policy for developing energy resources in the best public interest. Commissioner James T. Ramey, on the other hand, was one of the AEC dissenters. Ramey said he believed the reorganization of resource responsibilities would hinder efforts to deal with energy-environmental problems and prevent the use of AEC "expertise and facilities" to the greatest advantage. As Arnold Weber, associated director of the Office of Management and Budget, pointed out, however, retiring AEC Chairman Glenn T. Seaborg is in favor of the new department. Another supporter, and one who can cast a vote on the bill, is Sen. Frank E. Moss. Final Standards for emissions from new stationary sources will be published by the Environmental Protection Agency on October 27. The initial proposals, appearing in the Federal Register on August 17, called for limiting emissions per million Btu of heat input (maximum 2-hr average) to 0.2 lb of particulate matter, and, where solid fuel is burned, to 1.2 lb of sulfur dioxide and 0.7 lb of nitrogen dioxide. While the new rules are mainly for new plants, the EPA is also proposing them for "existing plants which are modified in such a way as to increase or alter. . . their emissions."

Usually outer straight steel tubes are used to blow supersonic oxygen into LD converters (BOF) to make liquid steel, although conical tubes are used too. Inner tube for oxygen blow and intermediary tube for water IN and water OUT are normally straight steel tubes. Present paper shows the influence of outer tube shape and metal used to in lance cooling and, consequently, a skull retention on lance surface. There are two parameters more important related to lance cooling: velocity of water out and the total lance cooling by addition of thermal conductivity of outer tube metal to it. For this comparison outer tubes are made of carbon steel or copper, and can be straight or conical. As related to velocity of water OUT, outer straight tubes have bigger efficiency than conical tubes. As related to total lance cooling, outer tube metal made of copper has much bigger efficiency than steel because of its thermal conductivity 7 to 12 times more depending on work temperature. The lance cooling has much bigger efficiency for the patented SKULLS3® technology with no skulls on the lance and no skulls into the mouth of LD converters (BOF).

"Optimisation of drill and blast design and engineering can deliver a significant positive impact on the profitability of any mining operation; however, true engineering of the blasting process is less common than might be thought. The paper that follows explores this gap and suggests a process control-based approach to the challenge.The concept of applying modifications to drill and blast designs in order to achieve efficiency improvements in downstream mining processes is far from new. However, the author suggests that the practical application has become less than rigorous in a number of different sectors of the mining industry in a wide range of countries.There is a common tendency for the design process to become simplified to the point where the objective is merely the communication of instructions to field implementers (drillers, explosive suppliers, blasters, etc). In effect ‘design’ often degrades to ‘cut and paste’ with consequences that vary from mild to critical, with respect to the profitability of the business.Engineering of the drill and blast process involves the design function, not on a one-off basis but rather as a component of a more complete cyclical process that includes a statement of objectives, a design based on a suggested hypothesis, field measurement of results, comparison with the target ‘set point’ and the application of control measures followed by new measurement, including interpretation of the results in financial terms.When applied in this fashion, engineering provides practitioners with the means to optimise the drill and blast impact on the full spectrum business result of the mining activity.These concepts are discussed with reference to a surface gold mining operation applying run-of-mine heap leach extraction. Engineering optimisation by adapting process control and measurement techniques is demonstrated to be a key component of the solution set applied to generate enhanced operations productivity and stakeholder value. It is shown that a combination of rigorous measurement, model calibration and hands-on quality assurance/quality control facilitates the creation of a road map to profitability, stressing the need to consider economic trade-offs between operational expense (investment) and measurement of enhanced value (return on investment).The process, however, does not cease at this point. Implementation of true design practices, incorporating innovation and discipline in implementation or execution can drive the process to deliver demonstrable, technically validated outcomes. Furthermore, these technical results can be related to financially quantifiable impacts. However, this accomplishment does not guarantee that these gains or savings will reach the bottom line of those mining, quarrying and construction companies that begin the process with such high hopes.CITATION:Adamson, W R, 2015. "The raw ores which are processed in mineral processing plants exhibit very strong variations of their physical and chemical properties. As a consequence, the performances of the comminution and separation processes vary greatly from time to time. Model-based control strategies improve the performance of the plant; however, they require some form of adaptation to cope with the variations of the are properties.This paper deals with the use of adaptive techniques for the control of mineral processes. It begins with a survey on adaptive control algorithms including parameters estimation aspects. Then several examples dealing with crushing, rod, ball, autogenous and semi-autogenous grinding, flotation , drying and calcination processes are reviewed.IntroductionThe operation of the various processes of mineral processing plants (crushing, grinding, flotation, dewatering, etc.) is generally controlled using empirically tuned regulators of constant structure, such as PID controllers. To improve the operation performance, mineral processors try to implement specifically designed controllers, i.e. controllers based on plant dynamic models. Most of the time, these techniques improve the control of the mineral processing installations. However, modelling is a complex procedure because of the problems of measurement and data management, specific to this industry, and because of the variations of the model parameters. In this context model-based control strategies do not always bring the expected improvements or are sometimes discarded and replaced by more conventional techniques .The sources of variation of the dynamic behaviour of mineral processing systems can be classified into three categories: (I) the inherent changes of the raw ore properties (composition, grindability, mineralogical texture, etc.); (2) the process tuning modifications (grinding media loads, number of hydrocyclones, slurry level in flotation cells, agitation speeds, etc.); (3) the feedrate variation of the ore, water, chemical reagents, etc. All these factors change the fundamental properties of the process dynamics such as the grinding or flotation rates and the residence time in the equipment. The simplified linear models which are used to describe the process dynamics are not able to track the complex behaviour of the mineral processing systems when the amplitude of the sources of variation are too large. The mismatch between the model and the plant behaviour is then frequently a cause of model-based controller failures."

The demand for hot rolled strip is growing in multiple ways. To remain competitive, new and existing mills must meet arisen challenges in the best possible way. The production of hot strip is a key element of steel production. Since close to half of all steel produced is hot-rolled to strip, mills require maximum throughput and availability combined with geometrical precision and the ability to create optimum material properties. Today there is a clear trend in developing new steel grades with high-strength and improved formability, like 3rd generation AHSS (Advanced High Strength Steels), as well as a trend to produce thinner and wider gauges. This trend challenges hot strip mills because it requires new technologies which provide more flexibility in metallurgical treatment during the rolling process. In order to meet and promote these trends Primetals Technologies is currently working on different concepts and solutions. One example is the development of a new mill stand technology Flex-HI HOT which allows to adapt the last finishing mill stands by efficiently switching from 4-high to a 6-high mode with small work roll diameter based on production needs. Another solution is to apply a permanent 6-high rolling stand at the end of the finishing train. A smaller work roll diameter allows to achieve higher specific thickness reductions and deformation rates resulting in significant thinner hot-strip gauges with valuable metallurgical benefits. The developed solution concepts with technological and metallurgical benefits will be presented in this paper.

The Bureau of Mines has developed a process to utilize waste heat from electric arc steelmaking furnace gases to preheat the ferrous material charged to the furnace. Four heat exchangers were designed, tested, and operated successfully on 1-ton electric arc furnaces. Briquets and pellets were charged continuously, both countercurrent to the hot furnace offgasses and at ambient temperatures. A comparison of the electrical energy consumed in each situation showed that preheating can lower energy requirements as much as 15.6 percent.

The feasibility of basic oxygen furnace (BOF) offgas heat recuperation by preheating scrap was investigated on a pilot plant scale by the Bureau of Mines. In this study, offgases generated during the oxygen blowing of a molten pig iron and scrap charge were passed through a static bed of shredded auto scrap. Scrap quantities varying from 100 to 180 pounds and representing from 22 to 40 percent of the 450-pound BOF metallic charge were preheated in this manner. Average scrap bed temperatures of 1,650° F for 100 pounds of scrap and 1,150° F for 180 pounds of scrap have been achieved during the blows. As compared to cold scrap used in the normal BOF practice, it was found that by preheating scrap, usage could be increased by 43 percent. The thermal energy recovered by this preheating method can account for up to 44 percent of the energy necessary to melt the scrap.

THIS PUBLICATION is the third to be prepared as a result of a cooperative project by the Bureau of Ships and the Bureau of Mines for accumulating literature published on zirconium and hafnium. The undertaking also resulted in the establishment of an information center on zirconium and hafnium at the Bureau of Mines station at Albany, Oreg., for the use of research organizations and others. The present bibliography consists of references (with abstracts) to pertinent literature on zirconium. The first publication in this series was Information Circular 7771, Bibliography of Zirconium, published in April 1957. It consists of 969 abstracted reports and 645 U.S. and foreign patents. The second publication, called a supplement to Information Circular 7771, is numbered Information Circular 7830 and consists of 844 abstracted reports and 62 U.S. and foreign patents. It was published in October 1958.

A ventilation study using tracer gas was conducted at a western US coal mine. The objective of the study was to evaluate the movement of longwall face air exchanges between the face and worked-out area and to document the presence or absence of face airflow pathways between these locations. The mine operator uses a bleederless longwall ventilation system with a back return and a blowing mine ventilation system. The study was conducted on an active panel and included both underground and surface monitoring sites. The study used sulfur hexafluoride (SF6) released as a slug on the longwall face and in the front of the gob inby the face. The velocity of the tracer gas movement in the gob was 0.019 m/s (3.7 fpm). The rate of movement for the overall tracer gas slug averaged about 0.0091 m/s (1.8 fpm). A separate tracer gas test initiated with the release of SF6 into the legs of the first shield showed the existence of more than one pathway of face air in the general direction from the headgate towards the tailgate corner. Maintaining adequate ventilation air on longwall faces is important for worker safety and for the dilution of methane emitted from the face and caved gob. A more detailed characterization of longwall system air and gas movement allows a mine to better assess its ventilation design for controlling gas on the face and in the gob.

A wide range of minerals is found within the Republic of South Africa, many of which are exploited to a greater extent than in similar deposits found elsewhere. It is often asked whether this is atributed to the high grade of the ores encountered in this country, or whether such factors as fiscal and Infrastructural incentives create an economic climate that has en bled the mining industry to successfully extract and market minerals at a profit. This paper views South Africa's mineral resources in a regional and global context In an attempt to place the country's geological wealth in perspective. It represents the author's own Views, and not necessarily those of the Department of Mine al and Energy Affairs.

"This paper is concerned with the problems inherent in the efficient and economical processing of the fine fractions of a coal from the Sulcis basin (Sardinia, Italy) whose characteristics are typical of low-rank coals occurring in the Mediterranean region. Three different techniques, based upon surface properties, are examined. Flotation can be very efficient from both a technical and economic point of view, provided care is taken in the modulation of the flotation pulp. Interesting results have been obtained with oil agglomeration and this method could be economically feasible. Finally, electrical separation has proven a viable technique, although it entails preliminary drying.Besides discussing the problems encountered in the experimental research, some significant results of general validity are also given. They demonstrate that cleaned products can be obtained with fairly interesting recoveries, thus opening the way to advanced research aimed at setting up the most suitable technique for industrial application. IntroductionAs a result of the oil crisis, which caused a major upset in world energy supplies, the last ten years have seen a revolution in the energy policies adopted.In particular, the status of coal, which seemed destined to decline in view of the availability of liquid fuel, has had to be re-examined. The need to meet energy demands under improved reliability conditions and controlled prices through a broader and more flexible diversification of sources of supply has evoked, especially in highly industrialized countries, a renewed interest in coal. The result has been a consistent increase in demand and production as well as investments in new mines and the reinforcement of the infrastructure.This turn of events has also lead to a re-evaluation of young low-rank coals, hitherto considered uneconomical and thus neglected, because of their low heat value. In fact these coals, which have a high ash content, may also be relatively highly contaminated with sulphur. The above drawbacks, which still today preclude the widespread use of these coals, are bound to create even greater problems in the future as increasingly restrictive environmental control imposes, without exception, recourse to cleaner fuels."
