For technical renovation of the thermal plant, one frame structure workshop of 50,000 m2 (59,800 yd2) construction area and one reinforcement concrete chimney of 150m (492 ft) height shall be demolished by blasting at same time. The engineering environment of which is complicated and the accommodation space is limited. Therefore, the collapse sequence, direction, scope of the dismantled building must be accurately controlled to ensure the safe operation of the adjacent generator unit and transformer station. By taking technical measures of theoretical analysis and numerical simulation etc., as well as research on structures collapse method and detailed delay interval, it puts forward the technology of bidirectional folded collapse of the workshop and it uniquely adopts the initiation system that combined with “half-second delay inside drilling” and “millisecond delay outside drilling”. Additionally, by using of the integrated vibration reduction technology in combination of the blasting ruins, buffer ditch and damping ditch, it has safely accomplished the demolition blasting work in high efficiency. Besides the demolition blasting vibration signal is collected and analyzed. The success of the demolition blasting will become valuable reference to other similar works.

Synthetic polycrystals of wustite were reduced ilz H2-H2O mixtures over limited roncentration ranges wiltun the wustite. field and the weight changes were continuously followed with a McBain quartz spiral balance. The reduction was. found to be controlled by a combined surface plus solid-state diffusion reaction. The solid-state diffusion had an activation energy of 38 kcal. Self--diflusioities of iron decreased with itzcreasing vacancy concentration. The activation energy of. the surface reaction runs different tor- different samples. The surface reaction-rate constan increased with increasirzg vacancy concentration. THE reduction of the oxides of iron has been studied for many years. Edstroem' has summarized the early work and has provided much information on the reduction of magnetite and hematite by hydrogen and carbon monoxide. More recent summaries are those by smeltzer2 and Themelis and Gauvin.3 Most investigators have reported that the iron metal which forms the outer layer during gaseous reduction is rather porous. According to Kohl and Engel14 the formation of such a porous iron layer depends on the properties of the underlying wiistite layer, on the reaction of the gas with the wustite surface, and on the transport of matter through the wustite layer. McKewan, Quets, Wadsworth, and Lewis, and Knacke 10 have found that, if a porous iron layer is formed, a surface reaction between gas and wustite at the bottom of the pores controls the rate of reaction. Seth and ROSS 11 and Warner 12 have pointed out that the influence of the gaseous pore diffusion through the porous iron layer cannot be neglected. It has further been shown that the wiistite layer formed during reduction is dense and that transport of matter across the layer occurs only by solid-state diffusion of iron ions.13,14 The solid-state diffusion rates observed by Edstroem and Bitsianis 14 and the surface reaction rates observed by Quets eta1.' show that an interaction of the two steps in controlling the reaction rate has to be considered. In this investigation the reduction of wustite was studied with respect to the interaction of the two steps, isolated from any other effects, by reducing wustite within the wustite field from higher to lower oxygen concentrations with H2-H2O gas mixtures. A similar study with CO-CO2 mixtures has been performed by Levin and wagner.15 Fused synthetic wustite polycrystals were reduced in steps of 0.4 wt pct from 24.4 to 23.2 wt pct 0 and over a temperature range from 700" to 1050°C. A few tests were also conducted with reduction steps from 24.4 to 23.6 wt pct 0 and 24.5 to 23.2 wtpct0. The Fe-O phase diagram is shown in Fig. 1 where the composition of the gas phase in equilibrium with the condensed phases is plotted as pct H2 vs the temperature. A careful study of the literature led to the conclusion that the fully drawn equicomposition curves (in wt pct O) in the wustite field used by Edstroem 1,16 and other authors needed some correction. Based on results by Darken and Gurry17 (shown as open circles) and on some of our own data, four corrected curves for 23.2, 23.6, 24.0, and 24.4 wt pct O were calculated (drawn as dashed lines in Fig. 1) which should replace the fully drawn equicomposition curves. MATERIALS AND APPARATUS Materials and Specimen Preparation. Wustite was prepared from iron sulfate (Fisher Scientific Co., New York) which had a purity of over 99.92 pct, with small amounts of manganese, copper, and zinc adding up to 0.03 pct. From the aqueous solution iron oxalate was precipitated and decomposed to magnetite according to Economos. 18 The magnetite powder was pressed into cylinders and sintered in vacuum at 900°C for several hours. The sintered compacts were placed in a platinum crucible of 2.5 cm diam which was fitted into a high-purity alumina crucible and then inserted into the center of the graphite heating element of an electric resistance furnace.lg The furnace was evacuated to below 1 p Hg and the magnetite sample was slowly heated. "Social License, the consent of the neighbors and community to develop and operate a mine, has received little attention until recently. Though social license is intangible, not having this relationship with the community carries operational and economic risk to a project, potentially including future impairment of the asset. Acquiring and maintaining social license is a long term personal relationship. It requires communication, commitment, consistency, and transparency. This presentation will review the building blocks to acquire and maintain a social license based on experiences with mining projects in Mexico. INTRODUCTION Mining has been a source of controversy for at least 500 years. “Since there has always been the greatest disagreement amongst men concerning metals and mining, some praising, others utterly condemning them” (Agricola 1556). In 2015 it is widely recognized that mineral resources and reserves must give due regard to the social license in order to operate. “Most commonly, the SLO is understood to refer to ‘the ongoing acceptance and approval of a [project] by local community members and other stakeholders that can affect its profitability’ (Moffat 2014).” “Social License to Operate has gained traction, in part, because it is also a concept which – while remaining poorly, technically defined – is generally easily and widely understood by community stakeholders.” (Bice 2014) A generation ago I learned that mining is based on a stable platform supported by three pillars, geology, mining and metallurgy. The three legged stool is a very stable structure.In 2015 it seems that we have added some other legs to the stool. The JORC code addresses “social, and governmental factors” (JORC 2012), and refers specifically to social license in Section 4 of the Report Template “Estimation and Reporting of Ore Reserves”. The Canadian CIM Guidelines refer to “environmental, legal and social data” (CIM 2003).Compared to these the 2014 SME Guide is positively verbose stating “a discussion of any potential social or community related requirements and plans for the project and the status of any negotiations or agreements with local communities,” (SME 2014) although in all cases the scope of this disclosure is left at the discretion of the Competent Person."

Why Chloride Hydrometallurgy?The most available, cheapest and best known reagent for treating ores and other raw materials for the metallurgical industry is sulfuric acid. Hydrochloric acid is second in line. What often happens is that a process is developed on the basis of sulfuric acid, and that at some point the question arises: wouldn't hydrochloric acid do this better?Considering hydrochloric acid immediately opens a very interesting field of research. To summarize a few comments from another paper presented at this symposium [1]: chlorides are far more soluble than sulfates (with a few interesting exceptions); the hydrogen ion activity is greater in chloride than in comparable sulfate solutions; higher oxidative conditions are possible; regeneration is more straightforward; more diversity is possible and better conditions for the separation of species can be found for solvent extraction and ion exchange; sulfur in the ore can be separated as elemental S; higher metal concentrations in solution and more flexibility in the chosen oxidation state means significantly lower energy costs.Also, the volatility of many chlorides at higher temperature allows further separation without the need to go to a different system. Chlorides also form molten salts with a low melting point, providing another means of separation and purification in the same chloride medium.

The Athabasca Basin of northern Saskatchewan and Alberta is an exceptionally rich metallogenic region, hosting more than 2.8 B lb U3O8, of which over 927 M lb U3O8 have been mined out since extraction first started in the late 1970’s. A detailed compilation of several empirical features of 85 deposits located within the basin was conducted in order to understand the distribution and variability of the geological characteristics of the mineralization and its associated alteration. A new empirical classification was devised based on four parameters: 1) geometry of the mineralization (dimensions and relation to the unconformity surface), 2) size, grade and metallurgical complexity of the mineralization, 3) lithostructural setting, and 4) extent and nature of associated alteration haloes. This compilation defines the footprint characteristics of the Athabasca Basin deposits, which guides decision-making processes from early exploration and discovery to resource expansion and extraction.

"Comminution represents a significant part of mineral processing plant operating costs. Yet, autogenous (AG) or semi-autogenous grinding mills (SAG) are difficult to control because of disturbances like feed size distribution and rock hardness. AMIRA, within project GeMIII, developed a comminution index from laboratory crusher data. The index correlated with the Bond ball mill work index and with the A×b parameter. The present work extends the use of crusher data as a grindability indicator to real-time industrial applications. The aim is to improve comminution operation using online hardness estimation. Because the operational work index is proportional to the ore work index, rock hardness variations can be estimated from the feed and product size distributions, the throughput, and the power draw of a crusher. Real-time estimation of rock hardness can help understand the dynamic behavior of AG and SAG mills. Multivariate time series were analyzed to understand the impact of hardness on a SAG operation. Results showed that the estimated hardness influences the SAG operation and its throughput. Moreover, non-linear dimension reduction was used to ease the process visualisation and search for potential control strategies. In the future, online hardness measurements should also impact the understanding of comminution circuits and improve their operation.INTRODUCTIONThe variability in hardness, and the feed size distribution, are two of the main disturbances affecting comminution circuits (Sbarbaro & del Vilar, 2010). Size distribution can be measured by imagebased granulometry systems such as WipFrag (Maerz, Palangio, & Franklin, 1996), or by 3D vision systems when the fines are difficult to discriminate by 2D segmentation (Faucher, Makni, Gagnon, Lavoie, & Roberge, 2015).There are few examples of online hardness measurements. One example was the work of Casali et al. (2001) who developed a hardness indicator. The ore grindability soft sensor used the fraction of each lithological class in the ore, as determined by image analysis, to predict the work index of the material. The model was developed using a moving window with a width of 12 months and trends were shown over many years with one data point per month."

An innovative biological treatment system designed to detoxify cyanide and nitrate and immobilize metals from cyanide leach operations is described. A pilot-plant demonstration was conducted to detoxify cyanide and immobilize several metals from a process stream at the McCoy/Cove Mine. Testing was performed under the EPA's Mine Waste Technology and Superfund Innovative Technology Evaluation Demonstration Programs. This technology was successful in detoxifying cyanide and effective in removing metals. The pH was consistently neutralized and nitrates were successfully removed. Results show that biological treatment can offer an innovative, cost-effective alternative for the treatment of mining wastewaters.

"Glass manufacturing is a heat intensive process. There is a direct correlation between the batch distribution techniques and the furnace energy consumption, productivity, and quality of the glass manufactured. All four major segments (float, container, fibre, and specialty glasses) would benefit from using an optimised batch distribution technique where possible. Oscillating batch chargers (OBC) have been in use since the early 70s, despite their superior batch shape, coverage, and in turn positive effects on the energy consumption and productivity of the furnace they are almost exclusively used in container glass manufacturing. The OBC’s main difference compared with other charging methods is its ability to directly influence the batch initial velocity. This paper reports on results achieved in CFD models (GFM) used to study effect of the machine on the overall energy consumption in the doghouse and the melt space.IntroductionGlass manufacturing can be divided to four major segments float glass, container glass, fiberglass, and specialty glasses. The financial cost of manufacture, its impact on the environment, lack of standardisation and mounting pressure imposed by the authorities for reduction in emissions means that the industry and its suppliers are utilising CFD modelling in order to tackle these challenges. The need for high temperature to create and maintain the viscous flow, homogenisation of the glass melt, and maintenance of the process to allow continuous output of glass of the right quality are the contributors to the energy intensive activities that are involved in continuous glass manufacturing. This in turn has resulted in design of large container glass furnaces which have high energy consumption, low specific performance, and high CO2 emissions where the most efficient furnaces in the container glass sector have a specific primary energy consumption of 3.8 GJ /tonne of glass at a level of 50% cullet in the batch making even very small improvements in efficiency by operation optimisation a value adding activity [1-14].The theoretical calculated energy required to melt glass is 2 to 3 times less than the energy actually used to melt glass as a result of glass melt passing a zone 5 to 8 times before leaving the tank.[8]. This causes contamination as the result of mixing between the completely molten glass free from bubbles returning to the batch area where there is freshly molten non-homogeneous glass, still containing very large numbers of bubbles and un-molten batch. At high temperature some components are dissolved rather than melted. Given that an un-molten batch is a good thermal insulator, it can be transported a long way into the furnace, increasing the need for homogenization which also increases the glass residence time of glass melt. This is why large unbroken strings of batch should be avoided, as should an overall blanket without gaps."

The effect of oxidation by air at temperatures ranging from 200° to 390° C on the change of chemical and physical properties of Pittsburgh-bed coal was studied as a function of processing time and temperature. The goal was to prepare a nonagglomerating fuel from a strongly coking coal for use in continuous carbonizing processes and in fixed-bed gasifiers. The oxidized coal was carbonized in a bench-scale apparatus, and the coke strength was evaluated in a Roga tumbler. Strength of the coke was progressively reduced with time of oxidation until the coking power of the coal was apparently destroyed. Time requirements to obtain an essentially nonagglomerating product were inversely related to processing temperature. Gaseous products released from the coal during oxidation reduced the yield of the desired nonagglomerating product, which decreased with time of oxidation at constant temperature and with increase in processing temperature at equal time. Oxidation at a temperature slightly above the lower limit of the plastic temperature range of Pittsburgh-bed coal was most effective because of the short processing time required and moderate processing losses.

Electrodeposition of silicon from a cryolite based electrolyte at a relatively low temperature (1000°C) is a promising approach to generate high purity silicon. In order to obtain fundamental data pertaining to electrowinning of silicon from Cryolite?SiO2 melts, density and electrical conductivity measurements were made. A range of temperatures and SiO2 contents was studied for each property. It was found that while density has an inverse relationship with temperature, the dependence for electrical conductivity is direct. Increasing silica content up to the saturation limit (~ 5 wt%) increases the density whereas further increase in SiO2, lowers the melt density. On the other hand, the conductivity is lower for the melts with greater SiO2 content, at any temperature.

Efficient particle classification is essential to enhance gravity and magnetic separation stages in one iron ore beneficiation plant. This study investigates the use of high-frequency screens to process finely ground iron ore, focusing on two size cuts: 400 μm and 100 μm. Pilot-scale trials were performed on four ore blends using a full-scale screening unit. A total of 48 tests were conducted, evaluating the effects of panel aperture, solids concentration, wash water, and feed particle size distribution. Results showed that wash water improved efficiency by up to 5%, while a solids concentration near 40% w/w delivered high separation performance with minimal ultra-fines in oversize streams. Apertures slightly larger than the target cut sizes yielded better precision in particle separation. Feed particle size distribution had limited impact on efficiency. The investigation successfully identified optimal screening conditions, including aperture selection, to achieve the most effective separation performance for downstream concentration processes.

We in the SA mining industry continually use imported, foreign safety concepts and systems that will not work fully in a South African context. ?The 4th Wave: Culture-Based Behavioural Safety?, as developed by Lance Bloch, an international award-winning clinical psychologist with 12 years? experience in the mining industry - focused mostly on Platinum - is making waves. He has been very successful in creating people-centred, empowered, high-performance safety cultures wherever he has worked. Not only does the 4th Wave transform the corporate culture of a mine, improving safety and production and building an environment of Ubuntu, but it also uses people?s cultures as a means of winning hearts and minds in the battle for safe production. Powerful relationships are built through engagement at all levels, leading to all being focused on the best needs of the company and its constituents as a whole. The Century zinc-lead-silver deposit has a geological resource of 118 million tonnes averaging 10.2% zinc, 1.5% lead and 36 g/t silver. It lies approximately 250 km NNW of Mt Isa in NW Queensland, Australia, and is hosted by middle Proterozoic age siltstones and shales of the Lawn Hill Formation. Within the orebody, most mineralisation occurs selectively within black shale units as fine grained sphalerite and galena lamellae with minor pyrite and siderite. The black shale units are separated by weakly mineralised sideritic siltstone horizons. The deposit is unmetamorphosed and only weakly deformed, displaying excellent lateral stratigraphic and grade continuity.

Development of the Batu Hijau copper project was completed in the fourth quarter of 1999 with the formal handover and start-up of ore processing facilities. The project began in August 1996 when the owner, PT Newmont Nusa Tenggara (PTNNT), awarded an engineering, procurement and construction (EPC)contract to Fluor Daniel (FD) for the development of the project. This included a copper concentrator, port, power plant, town site and infrastructure. PTNNT managed the development of the mine and the procurement of the mine equipment. In 1996, Batu Hijau was the largest mining project ever undertaken. Developing the Batu Hijau Mine was complex. It involved the work of thousands of people in all parts of the world to plan, engineer, procure, fabricate and manufacture equipment, supply and deliver materials and equipment, and build the plant.

Cato Ridge Alloys (CRA) is a joint venture company between Assmang of South Africa, Mizushima Ferro Alloy Company (MZK) and Sumitomo Corporation from Japan. Negotiations for the formation of the company started in 1992 with the joint venture agreement signed on the 19th September 1996. MZK was to supply the technical know how for the production of Medium and Low Carbon FeMn while Assmang was to manage the day to day activities of the company. Sumitomo Corporation was to act as facilitator between Assmang and MZK and, together with Ore and Metal are responsible for the marketing of the refined products. The conceptual design of the plant started in December 1996 and the first charge of molten high carbon ferromanganese metal was charged on the 19th January 1998. Problems experienced during the initial startup period were addressed resulting in substantial operational improvements. A build-up in the stock of fine metal was addressed through the development of a process to remelt the fine metal, the development of a market for fine metal and the upgrading of the crushing and screening plant to reduce the generation of fine metal. The mass yield from High Carbon Ferromanganese to Refined Ferromanganese was increased through the implementation of statistical process control, changes to the blowing patterns and the development of a sampling device for taking samples during the process. Converter refractory consumption was reduced. This was achieved on the converter by improving the cooling of the converters with the installation of cooling fans and cooling fins. The heating schedule of the converters was changed for improved refractory life. Production schedules were modified to allow cooling of the refractory between low carbon erromanganese charges. Additional changes made to improve operations were: ? Changing from mehanite casting trays to metal fines beds. ? Installation of sonic horns in the baghouse to prevent the bridging of dust. ? Improved welding on the lance tips.

Although we have access to a wide range of sophisticated process design and improvement tools in combination with a significant range of case studies, the mineral resource industry still manages to be plagued by the negative publicity surrounding operating plant failures because they were neither smart nor safe, together with proposed projects that fail at the first or second hurdle. The general public and the finance industry are generally totally uniformed about projects that ramp-up to name plate capacity on time and on budget and even more so when ahead of schedule and under budget. As the saying goes, good news does not cut the mustard.The following is a summary of the author’s sometimes jaundiced view about why metallurgical plants do not live up to their technical and commercial expectations. In no way should the summary be construed as a negative reflection on the skills of the metallurgical profession. Rather, it is to be taken as a positive acknowledgement of those skills and is intended to highlight some of the major considerations that need to be assessed as a potential project transforms into a sustainable technical and commercial reality.While a considerable portion of the summary is directed at developing hydrometallurgical flowsheets, the general principles are equally important to all aspects of extractive metallurgy.For convenience, the summary covers the following five basic discussion points – project, people, process, patents and politicians.
