A review and comparison is made of the circuitry utilized for dc crane control systems. Anti-parallel three phase full wave thyristor bridges for dc motor reversing and speed control are compared with a single three phase full wave thyristor bridge for speed control and either contactor or static switching for reversing control to obtain complete four quadrant operation for crane material handling. In recent years the Harnischfeger Corporation has developed a solid state adjustable voltage control system to control the speed and direction of dc motors for crane applications and handling materia1.1 Shunt wound dc motors are utilized and speed is controlled in the motor base speed operating region at constant torque by a thyristor, silicon controlled rectifier (SCR), adjust- able armature voltage supply. The three phase thyristor bridge is the power controlling element of the dc adjustable voltage control. ELECTROTORQUE is the Harnischfeger Corporation registered trade name for this type of drive system. By controlling the gating signals or firing pulses to the thyristor bridge SCR's the dc output voltage can be varied over a wide range. This range is limited only by the magnitude of the ac applied voltage. To obtain operation of the motor in both directions two thristor bridges are connected in an anti-parallel arrangement. A typical schematic for two anti-parallel connected three phase SCR bridges is shown in Figure 1.

The effectiveness of an industry?s safety activities can be gaged best by the accident records of that industry. In an effort to gage conditions in the petroleum industry, and with the objective of helping to reduce the number of accidents in it, the Bureau of Mines from time to time has tabulated, analyzed, and published pertinent statistical information3/. These reports have dealt with distribution, causes, and costs and related phases of accidents for various and collective divisions of the petroleum industry in several sections of the country. This type of study aids the personnel of the Bureau in planning the course of its activities in accident-prevention work and gives useful data to persons engaged or interested in the promotion of safety in the petroleum industry, which will aid them in their efforts to reduce the number and severity of accidents. A majority of petroleum operators and ?service" contractors have acknowledged their responsibility to provide their employees with safe working conditions and to their stockholders for greater economic value of invested capital by establishing safety divisions within their respective organizations. Such divisions have a primary duty, namely, to see that properly designed and guarded machinery and working equipment are furnished the employees and that they are trained in the safest practical methods of performing their work. "Cadmium telluride (CdTe) is a very interesting material that has many applications. Thin films of p-type CdTe can be used as the absorber layer in the heterojunction CdS/CdTe thin film solar cells in which n-type cadmium sulfide (CdS) works as the window layer. A review of the photoluminescence (PL) spectra ofp-type CdTe thin films prepared by different techniques was performed. The presence of defects and impurities such as oxygen and chlorine influence the PL spectrum. Copper and other dopants change the PL spectra and enhance the defects band. Chemical-heat treatment especially with CdCh is known to improve the quality of CdTe thin films because it decreases the Cd vacancies and quenches deep traps, so it enhances the PL signal. A discussion of chemical-heat treatment especially with CdCh, the effect of the ambient atmosphere, and that of the measuring temperature is performed.IntroductionCadmium telluride (CdTe) is a II-VI compound semiconductor that has a cubic zincblende (sphalerite) structure with a lattice constant of 0 A4~11]. Other than all of II -VI semiconductors, CdTe can be made both n- and p-type. But due to self compensation it is not easy to get p-type CdTe films [2]. Polycrystalline CdTe thin films are interesting because they have a lot of applications. Most of the problems associated with the use of these films are attributed to inhomogeneity, self-compensation, and the difficulty of forming a stable and lowresistivity ohmic contact [3]. CdTe technology has been established for a large number of applications, including solar cells, optical and nuclear detectors, and thermal- and radiationimaging devices [3]. At present, the highest demonstrated conversion efficiency for a CdTe based heterojunction (ID), with CdS as a window layer, is 16.5% [4, 5]. CdTe thin films can be prepared by different experimental techniques, such as thermal evaporation [l], electrochemical deposition (ED) [3], close-spaced sublimation (CSS) [3, 4, 6], physical vapor deposition (PVD) [3], chemical molecular beam deposition (CMBD) [7], and close space vapor transport (CSVT) [8].The objective of this paper is to make a review of the photoluminescence (PL) spectra ofp-type CdTe thin films prepared by different techniques and discuss the factors that influence the PL spectra. The composition of the film is very interesting in determining its PL spectrum. Different kinds of defects, impurities and dopants have their finger prints in the PL spectrum. Deposition techniques and deposition parameters such as the deposition temperature and ambient atmosphere also have their influence. Heat and chemical treatments which are known to improve crystallization and reduce the defects change the PL spectrum."

INTRODUCTION Large scale underground mining involves the bulk handling of fragmented material. The cost and efficiency of the mining systems is there- fore significantly influenced by material flow characteristics. Flow problems may occur in the form of ore pass blockages which interrupt the free flow at extraction openings. The costs of such delays can be readily assessed and compared to the costs incurred in reducing blockages by improved fragmentation or larger ore passes. In practice the problem is more complex than this statement suggests because it is generally un- economic to design for zero ore blockages. Another major flow problem occurs in the form of relative movement of ore and waste as the fragmented material is extracted. This produces waste dilution in the recovered ore and influences total ore recovery. This flow problem is much more complex than the ore block- age phenomena. Many questions concerning the precise flow characteristics remain unanswered because of the variability of size distributions, particle shapes, material properties and the total extraction layout and design. Model studies can provide a visual and quantitative illustration of probable flow characteristics but full scale data collection is necessary to evaluate the precision of such information. The methods and types of data obtained must be carefully selected to recover the maximum volume of useful information for operational control and future design. It is essential that honest precision levels are assigned to the data and any subsequent analyses. Grade control data may give misleading short term information on flow characteristics because of the difficulty in knowing the true grade of the mass of material before extraction commences. However, in the long term control of extraction grades is vital to the profitable operation of the mining system. The most efficient extraction design and operational schedule can only be determined after all of the facts and variables are known. This is usually only possible after the orebody has been completely extracted. However, if design and operational personnel have a full appreciation of the nature and variability of material flow under different conditions the best possible results should be achieved. The most significant features of material flow are out- lined in this paper in order to provide mine planning and mine management personnel with some of the necessary information relating to material flow. Available facts and reliable figures from selected publications are noted in association with unbiased and hopefully accurate opinions of the relevance of the data to mine design and mine system control. Possible future developments and profitable areas for research into material flow problems are also detailed. MATERIAL FLOW AND MINING METHODS The effects of material flow on the design and operation of an integrated underground ore handling system is one factor which is common to most mining methods. Analysis of the system as detailed by Just, 1980, permits the identification of unit process objectives. For example, a typical underground ore handling system as illustrated in Figure 1, involves the following unit operations:- (i) Gravity flow of ore in stope (ii) Ore extraction at base of stope (iii) Ore haulage on the production level (iv) Dumping of ore into ore pass system (v) Gravity flow of ore in the ore pass (vi) Underground crushing of ore (vii) Haulage of crushed ore to shaft (viii) Hoisting of ore to the surface. Average flow rates in each of these unit operations can be misleading due to variability in incremental capacity caused by flow blockages and machine delays. Thus to effectively analyse the probable performance of the system, it is necessary to have a measure of the flow loading and haulage rate variability. Mechanical equipment performance specifications can be used to provide such information for loading, haulage and crushing; however, in the case of the gravity flow of material field measurements are required to relate the probability of "hang-ups" to the degree of fragmentation. Factors affecting the frequency of flow stoppages are, size, distribution and cohesiveness of broken material and the geometry and size of the flow channel. "The Levitation Casting Process is a new continuous casting method that uses an electromagnetic levitation field, instead of a mold, to support and contain a column of solidifying metal. By counteracting gravitational forces and hydrostatic pressure on the metal column, this process eliminates friction and adhesion at the interface between the solidifying metal and the cooled walls of the casting chamber. The process inherently provides high casting speeds, excellent dimensional control and smooth, continuous emergence of solidified product from the top of the casting chamber.Of major importance is that the electromagnetic field produces an intense stirring of the liquid metal both before and during solidification. As a result of this stirring, the cast product has a homogeneous, equiaxed, fine grain structure generally suitable for immediate drawing or other forming operations without the need for hot rolling or other expensive additional processing.This paper reviews the fundamentals of the Levitation Casting Process, results obtained in casting various pure metals and alloys, and the production sized system at Lowell, MA, that uses this process. The interaction of flotation collectors with sulfide minerals takes place at the solid - solution interface. The electrochemistry of the processes which affect this interface are discussed. The interaction of xanthates with sulfides is an electrochemical process, xanthates being electro-oxidised to chemisorbed xanthate and dixanthogen. The role of oxygen is to provide a cathodic process to allow the anodic oxidation to occur. The hydrophobic condition of the mineral surface is brought about by the presence of the oxidised xanthate species. The action of reagents which can activate or depress the flotation of sulfides is discussed briefly.

"Iron and steel making processes give rise to large amounts of usable and unusable materials, the latter generally being termed wastes. It is sometimes difficult to distinguish between re-usable by-products and wastes which cannot be sold or land-filled. Much depends on circumstances such as the local market for the material. This can itself vary from time to time with by-products which cannot be used or sold becoming wastes and vice versa. This paper defines the concept of “waste-free technology”, discusses its development in the steel industry and highlights the benefits of the technology to the manufacturing sector and the environment. The paper also articulates how the “waste-free” technology could be applied in the proposed Ajaokuta integrated steel plant in Nigeria.IntroductionIn the past, nature was considered an inexhaustible store. Its resources were consequently exploited and waste products therefrom were discarded. Today, attitudes have not changed appreciably even as raw materials cost rise by the year to pose a series of socio-economic problems, which, among others, may include the rational and optimum utilization of resources, environmental protection and reduction of waste formation. Consequently, industrialists now face unexpected regulatory pressure in areas of pollution prevention, waste minimization and hazardous waste disposal.Iron and steel making processes give rise to significant amounts of usable and un-usable materials, the latter generally being termed waste. It includes that part of used materials which is not incorporated into the products manufactured during a process stage and which in contrast to reuseable materials, is considered not suitable for any further use, owing to technical or economic factors. In general, these materials are inorganic and parts of them are either utilized or passed to the other processes; the other part should be disposed of using well-established waste disposal practices to avoid any environmental threat.Thus, creative methods must be developed to modify the manufacturing processes to reduce emissions and process wastes by fully utilizing all resources. One method of eliminating the negative effect of waste formation is the use of purification and cleaning structures (pollution control system, PCS). These are, however, quite expensive."

Start-up of a Hall-Heroult cell is a delicate task that can affect pot performance and pot life. Modem practices for high amperage cells involve preheating the lining before the molten electrolyte is poured in. Different preheating methods and heat-up schedules are used throughout the industry, and the optimum between a short start-up and damage minimization to the cell is elusive. Direct electrical coke-bed preheating is one of the most common techniques. This practice typically results in a non-uniform surface temperature distribution and can generate detrimental thermal gradients in the cathode blocks. Numerical modeling is an invaluable tool to study this complex problem and can help improve the preheating procedures. The modeling of the mechanical response of the lining is critical to detect risks of cathode block cracking or the development of gaps where liquids could leak into. Taking into account the baking of ramming paste, the quasi-brittle nature of carbon and the contact interfaces between different materials are examples of key elements to consider. A finite element slice model of a cell was built and simulations of different electrical preheating scenarios were performed using the inhouse code FESh++ to demonstrate what can be learned through thermo-chemomechanical modeling. The potential industrial application of the model is discussed.

The acid-ferric sulfate leaching of low-grade sulfide copper mine waste provides more than 10 percent of the U.S. supply of new copper, but recoveries and leaching rates are very low. In Federal Bureau of Mines research to improve the leaching process, experiments on 5- to 10-ton lots of mine-run ore were more revealing than bench-scale tests on fine ore. This report discusses the results obtained by leaching run-of-mine and minus 6-inch plus 112-inch samples of low-grade chalcocite-bearing mine waste. The samples were leached for 461 days and 61.6 and 37.7 percent of the copper was extracted from the minus 6-inch plus -112-inch and run-of- mine samples, respectively. A mixed kinetics model was applied successfully to the leaching of the sample with the fines removed where bulk solution transport was not rate controlling. The model, when applied to the run-of- mine ore, gave somewhat higher predicted copper extractions than experimentally determined. Subsequently, oxygen was introduced into the run-of- mine ore, leaching continued for an additional 312 days, and an additional 53.0 percent of the copper was extracted. Before the leaching experiment was dismantled and the residue sampled, the ore was treated with sulfur dioxide and its permeability was improved markedly. The results of each of these procedures are interpreted in relation to the attendant condition of the test.

THE Falcon Lake stock is a small igneous mass, 2.6 square miles in area, which has intruded a belt of older lavas and metamorphosed sediments. It is well exposed and the entire area of its outcrop is taken up with surveyed mining claims, the claim lines forming a grid which makes ideal conditions for a detailed petrographical study of the unusual variations which are found in the composition of this unit (see Figure 1). The study of this mass, which has revealed features of both scientific and economic significance, began in the summer of 1939 when trainees in a Prospectors' Training Camp, a Do-minion-Provincial youth-training project under the writer's supervision, were, detailed to map rock outcrops on various mining claims. Microscopic study of rock specimens taken on a line across this stock were made during the following winter and proved to be of such interest that a special trip was made the following summer for the purpose of gathering more data, the results of which are presented here. Location The stock is close to the southeast corner of the province of Manitoba, about three miles from the Ontario boundary. It lies between Falcon and West Hawk lakes and less than a mile south of the Trans-Canada highway. It is easily accessible by motor car, as a branch road from the highway leads to the Sunbeam Kirkland gold mine, which is within the inner core of the stock. Previous Work This area was the first in the Province to receive attention from prospectors, who entered it from the adjacent Lake of the Woods district during the days of the mining boom in the 1890's. Small occurrences of gold, copper, molybdenum, and tungsten ores were found, but to date there has been no production from the district, except for small shipments of gold ore. The regional geology has been mapped by the Manitoba Department of Mines and Natural Resources, the Falcon Lake stock being shown and recorded as of "varying composition". The more detailed work involved in preparing the accompanying map has necessitated only minor changes in the outline as previously mapped.

The Homestake-New Mexico Partners consist of Homestake Mining Company of Lead, South Dakota; Rio de Ore Uranium Mines, Inc; United Western Minerals Company; White, Weld and Company; J.H. Whitney; San Jacinto Petroleum Corporation; and Clyde Osborn, Homestake Mining Company is the general partner, the others are limited partners. The Rio de Ore Uranium Mines, Inc. has. a mine in the Ambrosia Lake area; this was the first mine to go into production in this area. The United Western Minerals Company also has a mine in the Ambrosia Lake which is operated as a "farm out" from the San Jacinto Petroleum Corporation. These mines are the principal sources of ore for the mill. This group was the first to obtain a contract with AEC to make uranium concentrate from Ambrosia Lake ores and the first to have a mill in operation specifically for these ores. With Clyde Osborn as the sparkplug and co-ordinator holding the ore suppliers of, this group together, a contract with AEC was agreed on as to its essential points by mid-summer, 1956, At that time, there was no general partner and no financing, so me formal contract could be signed. By December, 1956 when the contract was signed and the present partnership officially formed, much of the basic engineering was done and purchasing of main elements of the mill waited on the formalizing of agreements, at the specifications and sizes agreed on previously. Ground for the mill was broken in April, 1957. The sampling plant went into operation in October and ore was first fed to the ball mills on February 5, 1958, ten months after construction actually started. Filling of the circuit with sodium carbonate bicarbonate solution had begun a week before that.

Although hosted within an Ordovician magmatic arc, the Peak Hill high sulphidation system displays features typical of youngerPacific Rim high sulphidation epithermal gold deposits. Regional NW trending transfer structures are inferred to localise the magmatic source at their intersection of the NS trending arc. Fluids have migrated from the magmatic source along NW structures and thence exploited permeable horizons, which have become silicified. Alteration displays typical zonation from silicification through assemblages characterised by alunite, pyrophyllite and kaolinite and is followed by breccia/fracture controlled sulphide and gold deposition. Sinistral rotation on the NS arc has dilated NW trending fractures to produce the WNW to EW dilational fractures which host the higher grade ore. Mineral assemblages are typical of formation distal to the magmatic source in an epithermal environment. The combination of alteration and mineralisation zonation with structure provide fluid vectors which target a magmatic source to the SE of Peak Hill.

Three conditions are required for a risk to be realized: (1) a source of risk (i.e., hazard) must exists (2) some process must take place which will lead to the exposure of people, animals, and/or the environment to the hazard: and (3) as a result of the expense, undesirable effects are produced on the people, animals, and/or the environment. A comprehensive risk assessment addresses all three of the conditions through the following four steps: (1) risk source (hazard) characterization, (2) exposure assessment, (3) dose-response assessment, and (4) risk estimation. Although the terminology may differ, the overall approach of financial, public health, and environmental risk assessments is the same (National Science Foundation, 1985).
