The rapid increase in the use of monel metal and malleable nickel in the form of sheet, rod and tube has resulted in a similar increase in the demand for these metals in the form of castings. These castings range in size from small valves and pipe fittings weighing a few ounces to large centrifugal pumps, gate valves and marine propellers, some of the last weighing as much as 24,000 lb. A group of such castings is shown in Fig. 1. A large nickel agitator is shown in Fig. 2. Monel metal castings are widely used in accessories for steam power plants and in a variety of chemical plant equipment where the corrosion resistance, high strength and toughness characteristic of this metal render it particularly valuable. Nickel castings find extensive use in the construction of corrosion-resistant apparatus, and are often used in conjunction with wrought nickel sheet and tube in the fabrication of equipment for handling a variety of chemical and food products, particularly dairy products. In response to this demand for castings, numerous foundries have undertaken the production of castings of these metals and have met with varying degrees of success. While mine backfill plants are becoming increasingly more automated and instrumented, especially with paste fill operations, underground backfill distribution systems have hardly changed over the years. While fill properties are appropriately measured in the preparation plants, as backfill enters the mine borehole, the technology for control, data gathering and reporting is somewhat lacking. Mines typically experience problems with borehole and pipeline plugging, pipeline bursting, bulkhead failure and exposed fill sloughing. With adequate instrumentation of the backfill system it is possible to obtain a complete, continuous and detailed picture of the entire filling operation from preparation to post-pour. Good data will, over time, provide the basis for needed improvements of backfill systems and will be essential to safer, more efficient and less costly fill practices. This paper will review the areas of the filling operations where monitoring would prove critical to eliminate failures such as pipelines, bulkheads, fill exposures, stope walls, etc. The types of monitoring systems currently available will be reviewed and potential areas for development will be highlighted.

The treatment of hypersaline waters originating from numerous gold projects within the Western Australian Goldfields region via membrane technology has been assessed. A combination of Ultra-filtration (UF) and Nano-filtration (NF) using Ecotechnol’s modified elements effectively removes the polyvalent ions responsible for the high lime and cyanide consumption as well as the prevalence of scale formation characteristic of gold operations in this region. Through removing up to 98% magnesium, 94% calcium and 99.7% sulfates from hypersaline water with total dissolved solids from 40,000mg/L to 250,000mg/L, Ecotechnol and subsequent independent tests have demonstrated up to an 87% reduction in lime consumption and through the ability to increase the operating leach pH, reduce cyanide consumption by up to 28%.CITATION:Tapley, B, Stoitis, N and Lien, L, 2015. A PC image-based on-line coarse particle size analyzer has been developed to measure particle size distributions under plant situations where overlapped particles are being transported on a moving belt conveyor. Although previous testing had shown satisfactory performance of this image-based system for separated particle size measurements (the non-overlapped case), it was necessary to modify original algorithms in order to solve the overlap problem and make the system suitable for plant operations. On-site testing has been conducted at a large copper concentrator in the southwestern U.S. for further investigation of the overlap problem.

For many years drilling and blasting has been considered more of an art than a science. This is still true in some respects, but today scientific approaches to drilling and blasting design must be used to plan an efficient operation which achieves desired fragmentation within constraints. These constraints involve minimizing damage to the wall or nearby permanent structures and avoiding undesirable fragmentation and mine dilution which can adversely affect operation costs. The degree of fragmentation by blasting is the most important single factor in any attempt to optimize the overall cost of the mining operations. The mining cycle begins with the drilling and blasting operations, which result in a given blasted rock size distribution. While this operation represents only about 20% of total mining costs, the efficiency and costs of the subsequent operations are strongly dependent on the fragment distribution obtained.

Longwall coal mine operators in the US are required to ventilate multi-panel longwall districts but may have little or no knowledge about what happens to the ventilation air between the inlet evaluation points (IEPs), bleeder evaluation points (BEPs), and bleeder fans. The effectiveness of bleeder performance can directly influence the ability of a ventilation system to remove and dilute coal bed methane emissions. Consequently, the performance of coal mine bleeders is an important aspect of underground worker safety. U.S. coal mining stakeholders have acknowledged their belief that the T- junction split at the longwall face tailgate corner is very important in controlling the distribution of ventilation air. The percentage of air directed inby towards the bleeders and bleeder fan and outby to the submains is often not well-defined and can vary over the life of a longwall panel. To obtain direct measurements of bleeder performance, a tracer gas, sulfur hexafluoride (SF6), was released into the intake air stream along the panline of active longwall panels and in the bleeder/gob ventilation air inlets of an inactive panel. Tracer gas sampling was conducted underground using tube bundles attached to permissible vacuum pumps in the gateroads, former gateroads, and bleeders. Surface tracer gas monitoring was also conducted from operating gob boreholes and from bleeder fans. Testing was performed on multiple longwall panels which included various phases of longwall development and variable path lengths of ventilation air transport to bleeder fan installations. The applied methodology defines and describes coal bed gas pathways, rates, and volumes of movement at the bleeder/gob interfaces, and indicates flow rates for air/gas mixtures within these gobs. These findings are reported for three stages of longwall extraction using direct field-based measurements. Changes in the T-junction ventilation air distribution over the life of a longwall panel and its variable effect on panel ventilation airflow are discussed. These findings will assess the effectiveness of commonly applied ventilation strategies for improving air distribution and ventilation controls to meet statutory requirements and to achieve the desired ventilation patterns through multiple phases of longwall panel extraction.

"In recent years, the scale-up of mechanical flotation machines has been attempted with greater frequency. In contrast, the development of rotor-stator designs has been subject to greater inertia. The rotor-stator components are integral to the operation of mechanical flotation machines, responsible for the key physical processes of solids suspension, gas dispersion and energy dissipation. Design modifications are predicated upon the dual purpose of meeting customer needs while achieving metallurgical performance objectives. Accomplishing the latter is a rigorous undertaking, typically involving the sequential application of fluid dynamics principles, prototyping, smaller-scale research screening studies and larger-scale development projects. This industrial evaluation details the final stages of the forced-air rotor-stator development process using a double-refractory Carlin-type gold ore. A bypass stream of the primary rougher feed was further classified into cyclone underflow and overflow products. Four rotor-stator treatments were evaluated using parallel flotation rows coupled with a randomized statistical design. Only two treatments are compared in this initial assessment. Metallurgical responses were measured as a function of the random variation of key machine factors. Machine characterization measurements complemented the analysis of flotation performance indicators."

It was noticed early by operators that high recoveries and flocculation of the sulphide minerals were closely correlated in agitation-froth flotation. Later, this readily visible flocculation was found almost invariably to be due to the binding together of the oiled sulphides by minute air bubbles, and is now known to be characteristic of pulps in which at least one of the mineral species is coated with an insoluble collecting oil. In 1930 it was reported1 that in differential flotation a correlation exists between Brownian movement of particles in the pulp and their nonfloatability, and that Brownian movement and dispersion are likewise correlated, whence it would appear to follow that dispersion of a mineral particle in a flotation pulp denotes a particle condition unfavorable to flotation. In 1934 it was postulated2 that Brownian movement, dispersion and nonfloatability all flow from the condition of the surface of the dispersed particles. It was also postulated at that time that the surfaces of dispersed particles are ionized, the ionized compound being a product of reaction between a component of the particle and a component of the pulp, of a mass solubility of the general order of a fraction of a milligram to I 5 to 20 mg. per liter. It was then further asserted, and has since been confirmed by Bankoff,3 that sulphides so conditioned with soluble collectors as to be floatable flocculate without the intervention of air bubbles as binding media. The present paper comprises an inquiry into the nature of the bound and counter ions in zinc sulphide dispersed by sodium arsenate. A part of its findings was mentioned in the 1934 paper above cited.= The tests show that: I. When powdered granular zinc sulphide is immersed in aqueous solutions of sodium arsenate, arsenate ion is abstracted from solution and anchored to the solid surface, while sulphate and lower sulphoxy ions are concurrently displaced therefrom in substantially stoichiometric quantities. 2. The ion counterbalancing the anchored arsenate ion is zinc. 3. Dispersion and Brownian movement of zinc sulphide are concurrently maxima at an arsenate-ion concentration lying between 0.01 and 0.001-molar sodium arsenate. 4. Any condition or reaction that tends. to remove the zinc arsenate coating from the zinc sulphide particles decreases dispersion and Brownian movement concurrently. Experimental Three samples of zinc sulphide were used. Lot I was C.P. zinc sulphide, washed well be~ond absence of chloride, as shown by test with silver ion. Lot 2 was prepared by precipitation from hydrochloric acid solution of arsenic-free zinc, and was washed as lot I. Lot 3 was prepared by heating a portion of lot 2 in absence of air at 1200° to r300°C. for one hour."

The status and outlook for mining, in your view. Minerals remain a major part of the world’s economic foundation. The fortunes of the mining industry rise and fall with general economic trends, but mining is no less important today on a global basis than it has been historically. Certainly, portions of the industry are critically depressed — domestic copper to name one area —but other sectors are prospering. Mineral consumption, both worldwide and in the United States, has increased steadily since the Great Depression, hitting all-time highs in 2000, the last year for which I have seen data. The highly developed economy in the United States tends to obscure the continuing importance of minerals here. But in less developed nations the critical nature of minerals is obvious and well accepted. In short, although there is no shortage of problems or challenges facing mining — there never has been — mining remains an essential business with great global opportunity.

Traditionally comminution optimisation has been focused on energy minimisation, whereas flotation optimisation has been focused on recovery improvement. One of the largest, if not the largest, operating cost over the life of a flotation circuit is electrical energy. With increasing pressure on operators to lower production costs and the cost of energy increasing, reducing the energy consumption of the flotation circuit can be beneficial to site economics. This paper reviews the use of energy by mechanically agitated flotation machines and discusses the measurement and benchmarking of energy consumption in modern flotation concentrators. The chemistry of sulfide roasting is analyzed to show those aspects of performance which Thecan be predicted from considerations of thermodynamic equilibrium. It is concluded that equilibrium calculations can serve as a yardstick for prediction of roaster-gas composition and sulfate formation in the calcine for fluid-bed roasting practice. A method of calculation which combines the equilibrium and stoichiometric factors is outlined, and illustrated by an example from the roasting of Cu-Fe sulfides. ON first examination the roasting of sulfides would not seem to be a process to which equilibrium calculations could be applied to yield results of practical value. The burning of sulfides is an ex-tremely spontaneous reaction, excess air is always used to obtain rapid reaction, and in most traditional roaster designs (hearth roasting) the temperature and gas composition vary widely from point to point in the roaster. These are all conditions which promote a non-equilibrium state in the roasting process. However, the introduction of the fluid-bed roaster1 has brought to roasting practice new conditions of operation, so that equilibrium calculations can be used to predict certain limited aspects of practical operation. The fluid bed is characterized by uniformity of temperature, gas composition, and calcine composition from point to point throughout the bed. These relatively uniform properties of the bed make the meaningful calculation of the equilibrium state of certain reactions in roasting possible. It is the purpose of this paper to analyze roasting from an equilibrium viewpoint, to show where the method may be expected to yield valuable information, where it fails, and to outline methods of calculation. Main Roasting Reaction The reaction MS (s) + 3/2 0, = MO (s) + SO, [I] might well be called the main roasting reaction. It adequately accounts for the well known facts that metal sulfide and air are the main reactants, and metal oxide and SO, the main products. Deviations from this simple stoichiometry will be discussed under side reactions. For all metal sulfides, Reaction 1 is strongly exothermic and the equilibrium position is far to the right. Since the reaction is exothermic, the equilibrium shifts in the right-to-left direction as the temperature is raised. However, at all practical roaster temperatures (between 500" and 1200°C), the amount of this shift is small, and the equilibrium position remains far to the right. The main roasting reaction is essentially irreversible, and the application of equilibrium considerations to this reaction will not be! a fruitful field of investigation. A knowledge of the rate of this reaction. although not the proper subject of this paper, is of great importance to the roasting process. Analysis of the factors which influence this rate shows that: 1) The rate will increase rapidly with increased temperature. 2) The rate will be proportional to the partial pressure of oxygen at the surface of the reacting particle. Because of diffusion effects, the partial pressure of oxygen at the particle surface may be considerably less than in the bulk of the roaster gas. For this reason, intimate contact between gas and solid and high relative velocity between gas and solid, such as can be obtained in a fluid bed or flash roaster, will markedly increase the rate of reaction. 3) The rate will be proportional to the surface area of metal sulfide. Therefore, smaller particle size will permit a more rapid rate per unit of weight. To achieve practical rates of roasting the partial pressure of oxygen in the roaster gases must be maintained at a finite level at all times. Even where the gas-solid contact is very good, as in the fluid-bed roaster, the oxygen content of the gas must not be allowed to drop below some limiting value (perhaps 1 pct), or the rate of the main roasting reaction will become too small for practical operation. The gas chromatographic method, devised by the Bureau of Mines for analyzing routine mine air samples, was compared with the infrared method used for confirmatory determination of methane in mine air. While maintaining the specificity of the infrared method for methane determination, the gas chromatographic method is more precise, much more rapidly performed, and more convenient.

Petroleum exploration in onshore Gippsland was directed in the 1950s and 1960s towards plays in the basal Latrobe and Strzelecki Groups, but these became forgotten in the 1970s with the Latrobe play discoveries offshore. The principal explorationists of the time were Woodside Oil and Arco Ltd, who then departed the scene after drilling some 18 wells without major success. In the late-1980s successful hydrocarbon finds in equivalent age Otway Group sediments in the Otway Basin were made and in early 1990 Tyers Petroleum began investigations into Strzelecki Group prospects as applied to the onshore Gippsland Basin. Some 18 anticlines have been mapped, based on shallower coal exploration drilling in the Latrobe Group, which from seismic and gravity evidence are believed to unconformably overlie similar anticlinal structures in the underlying Strzelecki Group. Strzelecki targets of interest within drilling depth are the basal Tyers Conglomerate/Rintouls Creek Sandstone Formations which outcrop in the north of the Latrobe Valley and are analogous to the Pretty Hill Sandstone in the Otway Basin. In addition, intra-Strzelecki Group targets similar to Heathfield and Windermere Sandstone Members are also considered to be present. Good source rocks are abundant including coal seams and carbonaceous sediments of Neocomian and Jurassic age, which lie within the oil window. Seal is provided by the overlying Aptian-Albian aged volcanogenic sediments. The Tyers/Rintouls sandstones - a target in the Woodside/Arco wells, with two exceptions, were not reached. Encouraging intra-Strzelecki shows were reported in many of the wells. Basal and intra-Strzelecki porous quartzose sandstones remain one of the few untested plays left in the Gippsland Basin and, in the onshore, merit extra attention as they he within the oil window at economically drillable depths.

The technology of gasifying coal to produce synthesis and pipeline gas has advanced significantly in the Past 20 to 30 years. This period has seen the extensive use of oxygen in coal gasification, the development of suspension gasification processes and fluidized-bed gasifiers, the operation of various gasification processes at elevated pressures, and operation of gasifiers under slagging conditions. These developments are discussed, and their application to commercial and pilot plant gasifiers is reviewed. Typical processes for synthesis gas production are described, and operating results are compared. Pipeline or high-Btu gas may be produced from coal either by catalytic conversion of synthesis gas to methane, or by the direct reaction of coal with hydrogen (hydrogasification) to produce a methane-rich gas. Neither of these methods has been applied commercially, but developments pertaining to each of them are reviewed, and general processing schemes are discussed. The use of coal as a raw material for manufacturing gas has a long and distinguished history. In fact, the gas industry began in the early 1800's when William Murdock demonstrated that it was feasible to produce and distribute gas made by retorting coal. Coal was used exclusively for gas manufacture until the middle of the 19th centruy, when Lowe invented the carbureted water gas process. In that process, coke was one of the raw materials used, so coal was still an important factor in gas manufacture. However the availability and relatively low cost of natural gas in the United States, and its widespread distribution by long-distance pipelines in recent years, has virtually eliminated the use of coal as a raw material for gas manufacture in this country. It should not be inferred from the foregoing that the technology of coal gasification has remained static in the United States and abroad. In fact, in the past two decades many new concepts have been developed in both the science and the technology of gasification. This progress has been a result of the considerable expansion in research on the fundamental chemistry and physics of gasification reactions, and in development work on gasification processes. This expansion in effort stems in part from increased interest in the use of gas as a raw material for the synthesis of chemicals and liquid fuels, and in part from the need to develop methods for gasifying coal and other solid fossil fuels to ensure a long-range supply of energy in the form of gaseous fuel. In these uses of gas, synthesis gas, a mixture of hydrogen and carbon monoxide in various proportions, is the starting material. It may be converted catalytically to gaseous and liquid hydrocarbons and other chemicals, or to hydrogen for use in hydrogenation or reduction reactions. Since coal is our most abundant fossil fuel, it is inevitable that one day it will regain its prominence as a raw material for gas manufacture. It is of interest, therefore, to consider the present status of gasification technology, directing attention particularly to advances made in recent years. Inasmuch as many comprehensive treatises l-3 and review4-7 of gasification technology are available, no attempt will be made in the present review to cover all processes in detail. Instead, the discussion will be concerned chiefly with typical processes embodying the advances that are most likely to be generally applied. ADVANCES IN GASIFICATION TECHNOLOGY For purposes of this discussion the starting point will be the conventional processes that were used for many years for the complete gasification of coal. These were: 1) carbonization in coke ovens followed by gasification of coke with air and steam in cyclic water-gas generators, and 2) fixed-bed air-blown producers. We report on the development of a finite-element method model for a pilot furnace for the production of manganese alloys. The model is a multiphysics model that addresses material flow, electrical conditions, heat transfer, and physical and chemical transformations. It is capable of studying both quasi-steady and transient states in time-dependent simulations. The model includes common charge materials and fluxes and can simulate production of both ferromanganese and silicomanganese alloys with acid and basic slags, as well as changing charge compositions. The model output provides access to the material distribution in the furnace during furnace runs, temperature profiles, current paths, energy balances, and alloy and slag production rates and compositions.

A series of gas inrush events occurred during development at Grosvenor mine resulting in exposure to elevated levels of methane at the production face. A total of 22 gas inrush events occurred releasing between 15 and 130 m3 of methane during each event. The presence of an undrained seam in the immediate floor, geotechnical characteristics of the floor, and the stress environment all contributed to these dynamic floor events, while the geological characteristics of the seam below, such as the seam thickness and ash content of 75%, prevented effective pre-drainage. However, events only occurred in headings mined parallel to the principal horizontal stress direction. In cut-throughs (C/Ts) perpendicular to the principal stress direction, no events occurred, and higher methane levels were observed at the production face.

On 16 July 2004, at 07:10 a collapse of about 1.8 million m3 (about 4 ½ million tonnes) took place on the north wall on Nchanga Open Pit This collapse was the result of a developing instability that was first identified when the benches in this area were exposed during September 2002. The NOP Geotechnical and Survey Departments closely monitored the development of the failure. Control measures were implemented to reduce risk to men and equipment. These measures were continually improved and adjusted in reaction to observations and changing conditions. The purpose of this paper is to describe in detail the monitoring results that were obtained both by traditional methods and the novel Slope Stability Radar System (SSR). Difficulties encountered in establishing critical deformation levels and deformation rates that can be used to predict the onset of collapse are described. Details of the monitoring and control measures, which led to the successful completion of mining in the area, are also described in this paper.
