Overhand cut-and-fill mining of narrow vein orebodies inevitably leads to the creation of horizontal pillars. As the thickness of the overlying crown pillar diminishes, stresses build up in the pillar. More often than not, this situation causes an increased level of seismicity and possible pillar burst. One well-known strategy to reduce the hazard of crown and sill pillar burst in cut-and-fill vein mining is that of destress blasting. The paper first reviews the methods used for the monitoring and assessment of potential pillar burst in narrow vein cut-and-fill mining. The influence of horizontal stress, mine depth and pillar thickness on stress build-up in the crown pillar is examined through a characteristic narrow vein numerical model. The paper then presents, with reference to three mine case studies, the benefits of destress blasting and the factors affecting its success as a ground control technique.

A process is described for the recovery of valuable nonferrous metals from steelmaking dust by suiphatizing roasting using ammonium sulphate. Maximum recoveries of soluble metal sulphates achieved at optimum conditions were> 99.0 %. Selective metal separation of the soluble sulphates in the leached liquors were performed either by controlling the roasting temperature or by adjustment the pH values of the leached liquor ranging from 3.6-6.2. Either pure zinc oxide orland tin oxide could be obtained at optimum conditions, and the products were evaluated chemically and by X-ray analyses. The residues rich in iron oxide can be removed and recycled. The mechanism of sulphatizing roasting process was considered. A general flow-sheet for the overall process of treatment the steel making dust to recover its valuable nonferrous metals was suggested, which ca be applied for other nonferrous bearing materials.

"Two composite samples of a gold-bearing ore from North Western Quebec (Barry Township) were tested to assess their grindability, recovery by flotation and Knelson concentrator as well as extraction using cyanidation.Work index values (BWi) for two composites were found to be 10.4 and 11.0 kWh/tonne, respectively. Flotation tests involved feed samples for which the particle size ranged from a P80 value of 205 ?m to 53 ?m, which resulted in gold recoveries of 91.8% to 95.8% (at gold grades of 130 to 140 g/tonne). Cyanidation tests indicated gold extraction levels ranging from 94.2 to 97.5%. Higher, recoveries were obtained at finer grind sizes and higher cyanide strengths. However, the grind size had a bigger impact on gold leaching. Gold grade and recoveries obtained with the Knelson concentrator device were lower than those obtained by flotation. Mass recoveries to concentrate products strongly depended on the fluidization pressure used. High gold recoveries can be obtained generally at low water pressures of 3 to 4 psi. Higher water pressures produced more selectivity at the expense of higher gold losses.It can be concluded that the gold ore samples tested have good characteristics due to moderate levels of energy requirement, high gold recoveries and extraction rates attainable.INTRODUCTIONBench scale testing of ore samples is an important step in the long series of metallurgical and economic studies involved in bringing new ore bodies into production (Coleman, 1980). Through a laboratory testing program, the behaviour of an ore in a particular process on a larger scale can be established. In an exploratory manner, this testing can be helpful for classification of ores in terms of “good ore” or “problematic ore” by providing preliminary information on recoverability of target minerals. Potential problems if any can be assessed by further investigation of products (e.g., middlings) obtained as a result of testing. A detailed bench scale experimental program in the metallurgical laboratory can also provide the background work for flowsheet development. Depending on the simplicity or complexity of the ore to be tested and type of details required from a testing program, the amount of samples required in the mineral processing laboratory can vary from several kg to more than one hundred kg depending on how detailed the metallurgical testing program is."

This study presents results based on the Pile Installation Demonstration Project (PIDP) that was conducted as a part of the East Span San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge Seismic Safety Project. For the three full-scale pile installations, two different high-energy hydraulic hammers were selected for the installation. However, these hammers may not have sufficient energy to drive these large diameter piles at their ultimate capacity following long-term set-up. Nevertheless, these hammers were selected because, soil plug behavior, the generation of excess pore pressures and remolding of soil during driving were expected to reduce the shaft and end bearing resistance, and therefore reduce the energy required to drive these piles to design penetration. Data collected during continuous installation driving and after a series of re-strikes at different set-up times ranging from 1 to 33 days were used as input data for CAPWAP. These results were used to estimate the soil resistance along the pile length and at the toe of the pile, and the soil pile set-up behavior. Validity of the procedures used to predict the soil resistance to driving and predicted blow counts were verified with the field observed blow counts and the energy that was delivered to the pile. Based on combined CAPWAP analyses, the soil pile set-up with time was estimated and compared with results of other methods currently available in the literature for predicting the soil pile set-up rate.

Fine coal (-500 µm) is notoriously difficult to dewater. It is not uncommon for a dewatered product to have a moisture content as high as 30 per cent after vacuum filtration. This poses several handling and financial problems to such an extent that a lot of fine coal is discarded onto slurry waste ponds. A novel way of dewatering fine coal was developed at North-West University. It entails deliberately damaging the filter cake during dewatering to allow for an increased flow of air through the cake at the expense of the applied pressure differential. This method resulted in an average improvement in final cake moisture of between 3 per cent and 5 percent when executed in the laboratory under controlled conditions. A device was designed that could be fitted onto existing belt filters that would damage the filter cake as it passes by. This device was tested on a vacuum belt filter installation at a coal beneficiation operation in the Waterberg coal field in South Africa. The results showed a 3 per cent reduction in final moisture of the cake, proving the validity of the method at full industrial scale.

Coal beneficiation with optical sorting has not yet been studied in detail. Optical separation of coal from gangue particles as a dry method can be used as an alternative to the other enrichment methods. Developments in optical and pneumatic technology put the optical sorting one step forward by means of applicability of the mechanical sorting to the mineral industry. Because of the inefficient separation performance, dry separation of coal is very limited in industrial applications. Therefore, optical sorting depending on color differences between two minerals can be introduced to coal beneficiation systems. In this study, coal samples obtained from Konya-Ilgin region (Central Anatolia-Turkey) were separated by optical sorter and the results were evaluated. The conventional floatability tests for Ilgin coal are conducted by collecting most of the feed material at 1.3-1.4 g/cm3 density range. Separation of Ilgin coals with heavy medium methods will not be possible because of poor density difference between coal and its impurities. There are important color differences among the floated particles at 1.3-1.4 g/cm3 density range. Therefore, Ilgin coal is subjected to optical sorting in a pilot scale optical sorter. Different size fractions were fed to the optical sorter and then rejected and accepted particles by equipment were analyzed. Ash content of the accepted particles was reduced to 25-35 % and ash in tail increases up to 55-60 % after sorting. Although most of the material floated at low densities, optical sorter separated the feed into two different quality products. This study has the potential to clarify applicability of optical sorting even to non-floatable coals and to provide an important contribution to both industrial applications and literature.

The utilization of computer based monitoring systems for fire detection in underground coal mines has grown significantly in the past seven years. In 1984, an annual MSHA survey identified a total of 38 systems being used in U.S. underground coal mines, while a 1990 survey indicated the number has risen to 112. The applications for mine monitoring have also changed according to the annual surveys. From April 24 to June 21, 1990, investigations were conducted by personnel of the Ventilation Division, Pittsburgh Health Technology Center, in cooperation with Coal Mine Safety and Health, concerning the installation and operation of Atmospheric Monitoring Systems in underground coal mines. These investigations were conducted to gather information concerning the ability of the AMS to detect fires and heatings, false and nuisance alarm frequencies, information related to system maintenance, and information related to employee training on system operations. This paper addresses current applications of the systems, fire and heating identification rates, application of systems in dieselized coal mines, system maintenance, and employee training requirements. While deficiencies were identified in some applications, results of the studies and survey indicate the use of atmospheric monitoring systems can be effective in identifying mine fires and heatings.

The vast majority of the estimated 100 million rock anchors installed in mines in the USA per year use resin cartridges (Tadolini and Mazzoni, 2006). About 4.5 million per annum of these are bolts with a mechanical shell that if properly installed become effective active supports on installation. In addition, cable anchors (mostly passive) are installed with typically 4 ft of effective resin anchorage length sometimes with mechanical shells, which further makes the installation more difficult. This is because the cable (even with a stiffener tube) is not very rigid. When installing bolts with mechanical shells and cable bolts in the holes, the back-pressure can be so high that the installation is unsuccessful often creating a ?spinner? (an un-tensioned bolt) at best or buckling the bolt thus requiring another bolt/cable to be installed, or leaving a poorly functioning unit. The installation problems can create a significant potential safety hazard and waste time and money. Using a purpose designed test rig that physically inserts different rock anchors into pipes with resin and measure the back-pressure developed with time during the insertion/ installation. The test installation procedure is designed to mirror that used underground by rockbolt operators in coal mines. In addition a computer model has been calibrated that can predict the approximate back pressure of new anchor and resin combinations acting as a screen before physical testing. This research has lead to an understanding and quantification of the insertion back-pressures and this already resulted in improved prototype designs that could lead to more reliable mechanical shell and resin bolt installations.

High-grade cobalt concentrates were produced from the complex Blackbird ore with very good recovery in continuous pilot-plant operations in which a low-grade bulk cobaltite-pyrite flotation concentrate was roasted in a multiple-hearth furnace to oxidize the pyrite selectively. The cobaltite was floated from the resulting calcine.

In this study, with the primary goal of capturing ongoing digital transformation and automation impacts on the mining industry and its workforce, we conduct several interviews with mining industry experts in the United States and analyze our survey reports qualitatively and quantitatively through exploratory analysis. After the interpretation of the insights of industry experts, we proceed to generate a personalized and customized data analysis through a novel metric based on skills, knowledge, competencies and occupational requirements, which quantifies the job similarities for occupations in the mining industry based on the publicly available database of the U.S. Department of Labor. We use text analytics to tokenize and classify the interviews to capture a better understanding of major response categories. The temporal analysis shows that the critical competency needs in the data science and autonomy category increases from 28 percent in current demands to 43 percent. In defining our metric, we also calculate Kullback–Leibler (KL) divergence for each job profile that enables determining whether and to what extent that job is transitionary in our test set based on the mean, standard deviation and kurtosis of each job of interest. Our analysis reveals that the in-group job transitions are significantly easier than the between-group transitions, proving our initial assumptions and common sense. The generated heat maps provide the opportunity to present the gap between the current job and desired job profiles that provide feasible career change options, among others, offering individualized career paths for job seekers and promoting potential job transitions. Through the collection of industry-specific individual employee data, the AI system is envisaged to continue to learn as end users engage with the system, thus creating a central data hub specifically for the future workforce in the mining industry. Although the study has limitations on generalizability for qualitative assessments, it presents itself as a valuable application of how qualitative and quantitative approaches could be of value for future worker training in the mining sector.

De otro lado, las intersecciones de vetas favorecen la mineralización y el Domo Volcánico Candelaria es favorable a la mineralización al igual que los tufos.

Particularly the casting simulation software is being frequently used in foundry floors for casting quality control and optimisation. In this study, the filling and solidification analysis of a rolling roll manufactured by spherical graphite cast iron were carried out by Vulcan casting simulation software. The appropriate defect relieving suggestions were presented by anticipation of defects that may form during the casting process.IntroductionThe optimisation of a casting process has long been the most focused area in manufacturing plants. Many of the work involve not only the process itself but the cost as well. When it comes to the process, it is important to be able to control the defects that may form during casting.The casting process begins with the melting of a charge; followed by pouring into the mould cavity. One of the most important factors is the difference in the liquid/solid density which may lead to porosity. On the other hand, turbulence during filling is another significant factor in casting operations [1].During solidification, due to the density difference between liquid and solid, porosity might form which leads to crack-like defects. There are several other factors that may determine the quality of a casting such as segregation, inclusions, grain size and etc. However, porosity is one of the first parameters that can be easily determine and controlled by the help of simulation software. Simulation is a cost-effective tool in the optimization of process parameters and castings can be visually observed. Time loss and economic expenses could be minimized [2]."

The high-temperature properties of a 1 Cr-Mo-V forging steel are described. A series of controlled heat treatments was designed to delineate the effects of austenitizing and tempering treatments, temile strength, and grain size on such properties. Studies indicate that the mechanical properties and their varlations under creep can be described by the initial metallurgical structures and their changes droPirzg exposure, particulavly the carbide reactions. Such structures are described and correlated with the mechanical properties. FOR many years the large steam turbine industry has relied on the 1 Cr-Mo-V type forging steel for critical applications. Because of its adequate heat resistance and relative economy, it is currently in use in the temperature range up to about 1050" to 1075°F. Attempts to understand the large property variations attainable in this steel involve the structural modifications due to the wide latitude in its heat treatment. The heat treatment essentially involves a two-step process which includes solution-ing of carbides in the austenite range followed by a suitable tempering treatment below the critical to adjust the level of properties. The latter step is referred to as "secondary hardening" and is basically an ordinary aging reaction involving carbides. In the commercial heat treatment of large components of such steel, homogenizing and stress-relief anneals may be included and have some importance in determining subsequent properties. Several studies of the engineering properties of this steel as a function of transformation micro-structure have been reported.1 3 However, in this steel the carbide reactions, which are a function of composition and heat treatment, appear to be the property-controlling factor rather than the micro-structure defined as a transformation product. Thus, the tempering resistance of this type of alloy steel is mainly a function of the size and distribution of alloy carbides.4 However, it is also necessary to consider the stability of the microstructure and the effect of dynamic carbide reactions on subsequent properties. It is the purpose of this paper to show the interdependence of properties and corresponding structures, particularly carbide reactions, developed for a limited set of controlled heat-treatment conditions applied to 1 Cr-Mo-V steel. MATERIALS AND PROCEDURE The material for this work came from a large production forging whose chemical composition is shown in Table I. The property data accumulated on this steel as a function of heat treatment were room-temperature tensile and smooth- and notch-bar creep rupture at 1050°F (notch geometry: shank diameter = 0.357 in., depth = 50 pct, radius = 0.005 in.). To achieve controlled structural variations the temperature and time of both austenitizing and tempering were varied in a manner to produce a series of eight steels each at one of two grain sizes and one of two hardness levels in proper combination for valid comparisons. This will be clear upon examination of Table I. Structural studies involved the use of optical and electron microscopy as well as X-ray and selected-area electron diffraction. To reveal the nature of carbide precipitations, electrolytic extraction techniques were used with subsequent analysis of the residue by X-ray diffraction. Weight losses of the steel specimens during electrolysis were measured and successive chemical fractionations of the residues were applied and checked by X-ray examination. The details of fine structural distributions, morphologies, and crystallography of the precipitates as well as dislocation distributions were investigated by examining in the electron microscope three common types of preparation. a) Relief Replicas. Mechanically polished sections were etched in 2 pct nital, replicated with a nitrocellulose film, which was shadowed by chromium vapor deposited at a glancing angle of 20 deg. b) Extraction Replicas. A thin film of carbon was vapor-deposited on the polished and etched surface. The carbon films were then etched off and gathered on electron-microscope supporting grids. The carbides left imbedded in the carbon replica in their original distribution were then examined crystallo-graphically by selected-area electron diffraction. c) Thin Films. Specimens were mechanically ground and polished down to a thickness of 0.001 to 0.003 in. Final thinning was done electrolytically in a "chrome-acetic" electrolyte. When holes began to appear in the foil, the voltage was interrupted and applied in several 1-sec bursts. Sections of the foil between holes were thin enough to pass a 100-kv electron beam that carries an image.

The New Zealand Minerals Industry is small but growing. Over the next 10 years it will be facing stiff international competition for skills to support this growth, particularly from Australia who are forecasting that a further 70 000 people will be employed by 2015.   The value of commodities mined and quarried in NZ continues to increase; and the value of coal, metals and industrial minerals production reached $1.505 billion in 2006, an increase of 15 per cent on 2005. Production increases will continue à. Latest Crown Minerals statistics show that national prospecting and exploration expenditure rose to $29.9 million in the year ended March 31 2006 û an increase of 46 per cent from the $20.4 million spent in the March 2005 year. The equivalent 2001 year expenditure was only $2.48 million.   The industry already experiences difficulty in recruiting the people it needs with ongoing demand for skilled underground miners, trades people, and mining professionals. This discussion paper will outline the national context with regard to labour, skills and training. It will suggest options and provide an opportunity for conference participants to discuss the way forward.

The multiphase reactive flow in process equipments, e.g., fluidized beds, involves complex coupling among flow, heat/mass transfer and reaction kinetics over scales ranging from molecules, sub-particle eddies up to equipments. Conventional two-fluid model (TFM) ignores the effects of meso-scale structures, and hence is not suitable for describing the intrinsically multi-scale heterogeneity within multiphase systems. To be consistent with the meso-scale structures, we proposed a structure-dependent multi-fluid model (SFM), and closed its drag force by invoking the stability condition defined in the energy-minimization multi-scale (EMMS) model. The SFM reduces to the conventional TFM if homogeneous distribution is assumed within each grid, and reverts to the original EMMS model if it is used to describe steady state, global behavior of a fluidized bed. The multi-scale computational fluid dynamics (CFD), which is characterized by coupling of TFM and EMMS drag coefficient, can then be viewed as a simplified solution of the SFM. We demonstrate that the SFM significantly improves the accuracy and at the same time enables higher efficiency by allowing for much coarser grid used than in TFM. Recent application of it in 3D, full-loop, transient simulation of industrial processes, e.g., fluid catalytic cracking, coal combustion, gasification, kaolinite clay calcinations, shows its advantages in helping design and troubleshoot multiphase process equipments. Manganese-ore has been found upon the Isthmus of Panama throughout' a region of nearly three hundred square miles, over the greater part of which, however, it is known only in small bodies without commercial value. Only six mines, controlled by two companies, have actually shipped ore, although a large area has been taken up in miningelaims. The ore-bearing region extends along the coast of the Carib. bean Sea, beginning on the west near Puerto Bello and extending easterly about 35 miles toward Point San Blas. "The work presented here is part of an ongoing project designed to develop predictive capabilities of the local mechanical properties, and thus, structural behaviour of a thin-walled high-pressure die-cast AM60B magnesium alloy component. This work focuses on developing correlations between process parameters and local microstructure. Numerical simulations of the die filling and solidification behaviour of the AM60B component were used to estimate local process parameters such as solidification rate, temperature gradient, filling velocity, etc. These estimated parameters were used to establish semiempirical correlations with measured VALUES (of the local microstructure measured in regions throughout the component of different solidification conditions. INTRODUCTIONHigh-pressure die-cast magnesium alloys are experiencing increasing use in structural automotive components. A strength-to-weight ratio comparable to steels and its ease of castability allow for these alloys to be utilized in such capacities as instrument panel beams, seat and door frames, and engine cradles, among others (Gjestland and Westengen, 2007). However, the current use of these alloys is limited due to variations in local mechanical properties. These local property variations restrict part designers to assume lower than actual properties, resulting in larger sections, thus diminishing the light-weighting advantages of magnesium alloys. If these local property variations could be predicted, part designers would be able to optimize die-cast magnesium alloy components and fully take advantage of the light-weighting capacity of these materials.The work presented here is part of an ongoing project aimed at developing predictive capabilities of the local mechanical properties, and bulk mechanical performance, from variations in local microstructure, and ultimately from local process parameters in die-cast magnesium alloys. This project, unique in its nature, is based upon the results determined from fifty sequentially cast AM60B magnesium alloy instrument panel beams provided by Meridian Lightweight Technologies (shown in Figure 1)."

"Room-temperature tunable diode laser (TDL) analyzers are gaining in acceptance for highly critical safety monitoring applications in a variety of industries. This paper describes the testing, evaluation and deployment of a laser-based hydrogen cyanide monitoring system at the Campbell Complex of Goldcorp’s Red Lake Gold Mines in Balmertown, Ontario, Canada.A trial, single channel installation was followed by a staged multi-channel installation. Unexpected technical issues with the multi-channel installation were addressed and resolved.INTRODUCTIONLaser-based gas detection has several advantages over existing gas detection techniques (Ballangrud, 1993; Silver, 1992; Bomse, 1995; Table 1). For practical purposes, lasers generate light at a single wavelength. Room temperature tunable diode lasers (TDL) emit light in the near infrared (NIR) part of the electro-magnetic spectrum. Many gases of interest, including HCN, NH3 and others, absorb energy in the near infrared (NIR). Each gas has a unique absorption signature, or spectrum, made up of a large number of individual “absorption lines”. A TDL can be tuned to select a single absorption line of a target gas, which does not overlap with absorption lines from any other gases. Therefore, laser gas sensing is selective and does not suffer from interference from other gases. The single-wavelength nature of laser light also means that laser gas analysers have a linear response over a wide dynamic range.Tunable Diode Lasers (TDL) generate only a few mW of power. However, all this power is concentrated at one wavelength, the wavelength where gas absorption occurs, resulting in high signal-to-noise ratios and short response times, typically of about 1 or 2 seconds (Ballangrud, 1993). This also means that long path lengths can be used, enabling accurate measurements of very low concentrations, even with weakly absorbing gases. Tunable Diode Lasers provide all the advantages of other semiconductor devices: they are small, solid-state devices, operate at room temperature, and have long-term reliability (over 15 years). Currently, they can be obtained for any wavelength throughout the NIR (700nm to 2000nm). Because many gases absorb in the NIR, the technique is widely applicable."
