The sign of the surface charge for alkali halides in their saturated brines has been established from non equilibrium electrophoresis measurements and on this basis the flotation response of alkali halides was explained based on the adsorption of oppositely charged collector colloids by heterocoagulation. These surface charge results for alkali halides are generally as expected from simplified lattice ion hydration theory with some exceptions, specifically LiF, KCI, NaCl, KBr, RbBr, KI, and Rbl .The presence of natural oxygen defect states in the crystal lattice and the inaccuracies involved in the gaseous ion hydration free energy values used appear, in past, to be responsible for these deviations. The presence of natural oxygen defect states in KCI, KBr, RbBr, and Rbl as characterized by UV Nis absorption, was found to account for their anomalous surface charge. Further, other positively charged alkali halides, LiF, NaCl and KI, were found to be free of oxygen defect states. Nevertheless, oxygen defects can be created in these alkali halides to make them negatively charged and has been demonstrated for NaCl. Such negatively charged NaCl can be readily floated with positively charged amine collector colloids thus confirming the surface charge/collector colloid adsorption theory.

Two Also 3 1/2-ton motor trucks were used by Young Bros. while operating at the Mammoth Collins mine at Shultz, Ariz. One was equipped with an oil tank holding 1,075 gal. and was used for the transportation of "tops." The other was fitted with a stake body and used to carry machinery, wood, rails, pipe and all classes of miscellaneous supplies. The bodies were made of oak with maple flooring and were attached to the frame of the chassis by U-bolts, to avoid drilling the main members of the frame. Most of the hauling was done from Tucson, a distance of 47 1/2 miles. During the first 3 months, part of the road was in very bad condition and the tire cost was excessive. After this part was repaired the road was in fair condition, but never good. There were no excessive grades or bad sand, but wagon ruts, too narrow for the truck wheels and of a different gage, caused heavy tire loss; while chuck holes, sharp curves and stones, both imbedded and loose, were objectionable features. During wet weather the trucks could not get sufficient traction to climb some of the hills and were likely to stick in the mud in certain places, so that no attempt was made to run them unless they were on the' road when the rain started. This lost time amounted to about 5 per cent. of the total, but, whenever possible, it was utilized in making minor repairs. The price of gasoline was from 17 to 21 c. per gal. Rubber tires were used throughout. Drivers were said $4.50 to $5 per shift, and a return trip to Tucson was counted as two shifts even when made in one day. Drivers were provided with a room in Tucson and were paid for a11 time lost due to causes beyond their control. Trucks were loaded one way only. Speedometers were placed on both trucks but the excessive vibration soon caused them to fail. For this reason, and because no account was taken of the distance covered in picking up a miscellaneous load or in other minor ways, the mileage given is under the actual distance traveled. Some of the weights had to be estimated, but care was taken to have the number of ton-miles low rather than high, to avoid underestimating the costs. This paper is one of a series being prepared for the United States Bureau of Mines to disseminate technical information retarding the methods used in mining nonmetallic minerals. The cost tabulations represent operating expenditures only and not total costs. It is recognized that publication of total costs might in many instances cause embarrassment to individual operators as well as to the industry as a whole. On the other hand, operating costs are essential to the technical discussion and study of the methods employed. The attention of the reader is specifically called to this differentiation in order that no misunderstanding of the scope of the cost tabulations shall ensue. This paper deals particularly with methods and costs of dredging, classifying materials, and transportation at the plant of the Ross Island Sand & Gravel Co. of Portland, Ore. A series of experiments were undertaken by the Bureau of Mines to determine the emission products of several types of conveyor belting and other combustible materials found in mines. These experiments were conducted under intermediate-scale, simulated mine conditions to determine smoke characteristics and gas concentrations. From these determinations, heat-release rates, particle sizes, obscuration rates, combustion yields, and production constants were calculated. Three types of belts were investigated: chloroprene, also known as neoprene (NP); polyvinyl chloride (PVC); and styrene-butadiene rubber (SBR). The belts were designated as ignitable or self-extinguishing depending on the length of the burning time and the subsequent combustion products. Under these experimental conditions, the SBR belts were the easiest to ignite. The PVC and NP belts tended to self- extinguish within a few minutes after ignition, but were still capable of maintaining a brief flaming period. These conveyor belt combustion results are compared with previous analyses of wood, transformer fluid, and coal fires. Together they form a data base by which findings from future experiments with other mine combustibles can be compared.

"Pickling sludge generated from stainless steel production process contains large quantity of Cr, Ni, and Fe. The disposal of and fill sludge directly not only leads to the heavy metal dissolves in the soil and underwater, but also loss value metals. However, the major mineral phases of value metal are hydroxides and there are lots of calcium fluoride and water in the sludge. So the pickling sludge has to be pretreated before reduction-magnetic separation. The TG analysis, reduction reaction and magnetic separation were all used to study the pickling sludge. The result indicated that up to 900°C the total weight loss of pickling sludge was 22.32%. The mass contents of Fe, Cr and Ni in the tailings (non-magnetic) were 4.27%, 0.067% and 0.041% respectively.IntroductionSince 21st century, the stainless steel production in the world has been continuously increasing because of its excellent performance [1]. However, high stainless steel production means a high pickling sludge production. For example, in a stainless steel plant with waste water quantity of 100m3 /h, the production of pickling sludge will exceed 15 Kt/a. Pickling is essential for generating of a homogeneous and corrosion-resistant surface during stainless steel production subsequent process. Pickling of stainless steels is predominantly carried out with an aggressive solution, sulfuric acid H2S04 or composed of nitric acid HN03 and hydrofluoric acid HF [2]. During the pickling process, the pickling acids are recovered through ion exchange and metal ions such as Fe3+, Cr3+ and Ni2+ get into the acids forming the pickling waste water [3]. Then, the pickling waste water is precipitated with lime, forming pickling hydroxide sludge. It is not feasible to recycle or treat the pickling sludge using conventional methods, because the sludge has high contents of calcium fluoride and water but low contents of iron, chromium and nickel. Investigation of the costs of industrial accidents dates back to the 1920s. The Bureau of Mines was one of the pioneers in accident cost investigation with numerous studies published between 1928 and 1933. The bulk of these early investigations dealt only with costs which appeared as payouts on company books; that is, the direct cost of insurance premiums and the costs of medical expenses which resulted from industrial accidents. These early investigations, especially the Bureau's study of accident costs in Pennsylvania and Indiana coal mines provided the first real evidence that promotion of industrial safety pays back in dollars as well as in human life and wellbeing. In the 30s and 40s, investigations began to accumulate evidence that industrial accidents impacted more than just the direct operating expenses of a company (i.e., higher insurance premiums). The work of Heinrich pioneered these investigations, and produced strong evidence that the un¬insured costs of accidents far outweighed those costs covered by insurance. Heinrich developed and published a ratio of insured to uninsured costs of 1.4. Despite his cautionary statements about blanket application of this ratio it is used even today to estimate total costs of accidents. Simonds, in the late 40s and early 50s, extended the definitions of uninsured or indirect accident costs and developed what is now regarded as the principal method for estimating the total economic impact of industrial accidents. Simonds' method served as the basis for development of the logic of the Accident Cost Indicator Model (ACIM). However, several departures from Simonds' method were made to satisfy certain requirements imposed by the Bureau of Mines, and because information gathered during the course of our investigation justified a departure. Where pasture production is the intended land use of the areas to be reclaimed, the creation of a suitable growing +medium is a major objective. To achieve this land reclaimers require a sound understanding of the proposed mining plan and a knowledge of the physical, biological and chemical properties of materials intended for resurfacing disturbed areas. Where the original soil is not being replaced in its natural state, research is usually required to determine an alternative growing medium. Results from field research conducted on waste material from the Waihi Gold mine are reported with emphasis on the significance of soil depth in relation to pasture production in this environment.  Problems in extrapolating field research to large scale operations are also considered.   Essentially the requirements for successful pasture production, on surrogate growing medium, are akin to conventional approaches used in New Zealand in the development of unimproved agricultural land. High inputs of fertiliser are initially needed, especially where volcanic soil is used, and careful management of pastures and soils is required to minimise soil erosion and create a sustainable system. In the first three to five years of pasture production, grazing use of the land requires to be dictated by pasture availability and soil conditions and not by animal feed requirements. The use of light stock (young dairy or sheep) is recommended.   Successful land restoration requires a team approach by a range of cooperative specialists including engineers, soil scientists, farm managers, agricultural contractors, landscape architects and environmental officers.

Bureau of Mines Reports of Investigations 3244, 3245, 3246 and 3264 give data of detailed studies on smelting in the lead "blast furnace handling zinciferous charges at Trail, B. C. The present paper gives more on analyses of the gases leaving the top of the charge and on accretions formed on the walls of the blast furnace. New data are presented to show the effect of the temperatures at the tuyere zone on the lead content of the slags made. The greater part of this paper, however, deals with a much debated subject, namely air used in lead blast furnaces. Original data are presented to show the effects on smelting lead 'products when air is supplied to a lead blast furnace under volume versus under pressure control.

Lead smelting at Cookson Industrial Materials was formerly carried out using a combination of Blast and Reverberatory Furnaces. In the late 70' s these furnaces were replaced by two 20 tonne capacity Rotary Furnaces. This furnace type has proved to be more flexible in the range of feedstock that can be processed, including lead drosses, battery plate and even whole batteries. High rates of production have been achieved whilst attaining a good level of environmental control. The majority of the sulphur in the feedstock can be fixed by use of appropriate fluxes.

"Nickelhütte Aue GmbH is specialized in the recycling of waste materials containing non-ferrous metals. We treat nickel, copper, cobalt, vanadium, molybdenum and precious metal containing materials like spent catalysts, ashes, dusts, grindings, liquids, slurries and sludge's as long as they contain one or a combination of the above mentioned metals. In our pyrometallurgical works we produce non-ferrous metal concentrates suitable for further treatment in our hydrometallurgical plant where we refine Ni-, Cu-, Co- and V-chemicals. Our production is based on synergy effects due to the combination of pyro- and hydro-metallurgy. As an example we can mention our heat recovery system and internal recycling of by-products. En el Perú existen 7 cable-carriles en funcionamiento, de los cuales la mayoría son bicables, cuyos baldes están suspendidos y son jalados por medio de un cable de tracción sobre un cable estacionario. En este aspecto, el objeto del estudio describe el empleo de los mismos en Cerro de Pasco Corporation, su historiografía, costos, procesos, instalaciones y el peso. Así, es menester conocer que dos de los más grandes bi-cablecarriles se encuentran en Mahr Tunnel de la Cerro de Paseo Corporation que conecta la mina de San Cristóbal con la Concentradora de Mahr Tunnel, mientras que el otro está en Quiruvilca, propiedad de la Northern Perú. También hay otros cablecarriles en Tamboraque, Atacocha, en las minas de San Luis y en la fundición de La Oroya. De otro lado, en 1864 se dispuso de parte de la Corporación, la instalación de un mono cablecarril para conectar la mina de Yauricocha con un lugar llamado Chaucha, el cual era el terminal de la línea del tren de Chaucha a Pachacayo. Siendo desde entonces, el único mono-cablecarril de la Cerro de Pasco Corporation, situado en Perú, mientras que los dos restantes pertenecen a la Reynolds Metal Co de Jamaica, y el otro a una mina canadiense, respectivamente. Asimismo esta cablecarril acarrea 48 toneladas de mineral por hora y permite ahorrar el costo de acarreo de madera por camión sobre los caminos de Chaucha a Yauricocha, aunque surgieron algunos defectos con el desprendimiento de los baldes transportadores. Sustainability of energy supplies has been an issue of general interest for a long time. Whilst in the past the continuous productive use of natural commodities was in the fore, its compatibility with the environment and climate and ultimately also social aspects have recently gained more and more attention. Today many discussions focus on the climate compatibility of individual options to act. Fossil fuels, in particular coal and lignite, are generally challenged because coal use makes a significant contribution to global man-made CO2 emissions. The drastic increase in the consumption of fossil fuels is not explained by the fact that coal utilisation technologies are not or cannot be sustainable but rather by the growing world population and the endeavours numerous national economies trying to catch up economically. Coal is the world’s No. 1 fuel and, in the view of many experts, will keep this position also in the foreseeable future. The access to its deposits plays a significant role for the economies of the emerging countries. Consequently the aspects of energy security and economic efficiency need to be considered at eye level with climate compatibility. In Germany, however, the public acceptance of fossil fuels and of large industrial projects is in the focus of attention.

Since its inception in 1962, the Julius Kruttschnitt Mineral Research Centre has adopted the view that an effective method of training highly qualified engineers for the mineral industry is the pursuit of postgraduate research programmes conducted in operations, that is, in the mines and processing plants of the industry which the research serves. The paper describes how this is achieved in practice, at little or no cost to the taxpayer, and explores the strengths and weaknesses of this approach in the context of a dual mission for the Centre: 1. The postgraduate training of engineers for the mineral industry. 2. The production of useful R &I) for the mineral industry. Topics discussed include financing, relationships with industry and Government, the maintenance of academic excellence, research style, the marketing of research, and limits to growth.

The thermodynamics work-principle was used to develop the rupture-fracture-throw (RFT) model for ranking the performance of reduced-density explosives when shot in rock or other stratum. The RFT model revises techniques used for the rock-water-jelly (RWJ) model, where the reaction-zone remains trapped within the rock/stratum. Therein, ranking of performance refers to trends for the two resolved components of the total expansion work: the reversible mechanical work taken as the heave and the residual irreversible portion, taken as the undissipated shock. For numeric tractability, the RFT and RWJ thermodynamic efficiency were taken equal, while the RWJ late-stage confinement was replaced with restrained venting through the rock, to render the RFT inefficient heave. The transfer of heat from the reaction-zone was neglected and the root-power formula was used to render the gas-covolume. Ranking trends were found for a generic charge formulation over a wide ranging density, with underwater results noted for comparison. Realistic compositions, some with natural resource materials, were treated for just typical and reduced density. Rock characteristics, ranging from hard rock to weak stratum, were represented by their density and rupture compression strength. Quantitative test results for shock or heave in rock remain difficult, so qualitative guidelines remain helpful when reviewing the graphic trends. Theoretical refinements for rock fragment size-distribution remain under development, though some relationships are touched upon to gain insight.

The Amarillo Copper Refinery, the newest and most modern copper refinery in the world, has been in operation for the last eleven years and has a rated capacity of 460,000 st/yr. The tankhouse - a structure that covers 500,000 ft2 under one roof - extends one-half mile in length and is a model of materials-handling efficiency. The use of recently developed and patented* reagent control technology, termed "Reatrol Process", has increased current efficiencies to an average of 98% and has considerably improved the physical and chemical quality of the cathode deposit. The present paper describes the current operations at the Amarillo Copper Plant with special emphasis on tankhouse operation.

In conjunction with steady increases in production levels, longwall operators have applied greater quantities of ventilating air and spray water in an effort to control respirable dust and/or methane. Air velocities greater than 7.6 mls (1500 fpm) have been measured on longwall faces. Operators have expressed concern over the potential entrainment of respirable dust at these high velocities. The greatest likelihood for entraining dust into the high velocity airstream may occur as shields are advanced allowing relatively dry particles to fall from the shield canopy directly into the airstream. Laboratory tests to simulate dust liberation during shield movement were conducted at the Pittsburgh Research Laboratory of NIOSH at velocities ranging from 2.0 to 8.2 m/s (400 to1600 fpm). Airborne dust samples were obtained with personal impactors to quantify the size distribution and concentration of the dust entrained at the various air velocities. Statistically significant increases in both total and respirable dust concentrations were measured as test air velocities were increased.

The present study deals with the effects of strain rate on the functional behavior of NiTi thin wires. The samples, in the austenitic condition at room temperature, were mechanically cycled 20 times by loading up to 6% strain followed by complete unloading, at 25°C. Four different quasi-static strain rates were assessed: 1x10-4, 1x10-3, 1x10-2 and 5x10-2s-1. The functional properties are described by means of critical stress to induce martensite, stress at maximum strain, energy dissipated per cycle and residual strain. The sensitivity of repeated cyclic deformation to strain rate is also analyzed in terms of phase stability. The results show that the fluctuation in the loading plateau, due to non-homogeneous transformation, increases with increasing strain rate. During cycling, it is observed that higher strain rates result in lower critical stress to induce martensite after the 5th cycle. However, the stress at maximum strain is higher at high strain rates, regardless the number of cycles. The accumulation of residual strain also increases with the strain rate due to the higher applied stress. During unloading, both the elastic deformation of stress-induced martensite and the reverse transformation seem to overlap at high strain rates. The dissipated energy behavior changes between the 1st and 20th cycle. No martensite is stabilized after training, but the intensity of the X-ray diffraction peaks of austenite increases with strain rate, as a result of stress relaxation.
