The paper presents sensitivity analysis for a dynamic model of submerged arc silicon furnaces. The model we study, called ?Simod?, was developed by Elkem in cooperation with NTNU and Sintef. It is today a much used tool in Elkem for operator training and analysis of the dynamic behaviour of the silicon production process. The aim of our work is to bring the simulator tool closer to industrial practice, and construct a mechanism to adapt the model to the behaviour of a running process, online. The paper presents the results of the sensitivity analysis that has been undertaken for important parameters in the Simod model. The parameters associated with the process inputs are electric power loss, loss of fixed C and reactivity of carbon. The output signals that have been investigated are fed quartz, tapped silicon and silica. The paper also interprets the results of the sensitivity analysis in a process operation context.

A review of breakage and fragmentation literature has shown that only a few models have been specifically developed for applications in underground production blasting. These approaches, however, have applied empirical relations that do not adequately consider ring blasting geometries, have failed to appropriately respond to changes in basic design input parameters, and have complex input and calibration requirements. This justified the development of an alternative modelling framework to specifically address the prediction of fragmentation in underground production blasting. In this sense, the new model, designated as “FRAGMENTO”, is introduced in this paper. The basis of FRAGMENTO is a “single ring” deterministic model which can be extended into a stochastic model to simulate the impact of external operational factors on fragmentation. The single-ring component mechanistically models the extent of both near field and mid to far field fracture zones to predict the distribution of rock fragments expected to report to drawpoints. In this paper the response of this key component is evaluated and its practical application demonstrated with the introduction of a methodology to infer critical burden conditions.

In the past few years there has been considerable controversy on the most suitable material to be used in ventilation doors which will have to serve also as fire doors. For this reason it was thought useful at Mclntyre to find out to what extent our zinc chloride treated spruce doors were fire resistant and what protection we could expect in case of an underground fire. The doors to be tested were constructed of the same material as that used in our regular ventilation doors underground, namely, 2-inch tongue-and-groove well seasoned spuce. It is to be noted, however, that whereas the dimensions of the ventilation doors are 5 ft. by 6 ft., those of the test doors were only 14 in. by 17½ in. The treated doors were made up from lumber that l1ad been treated with chromated zinc chloride, as described in Mr. Keeley's paper. Two kinds of tests were carried out: a heat test and a flame test. An electric muffle furnace for assaying, equipped with a pyrometer, was used for the beat test, the furnace door being replaced by the wooden door to be tested. In the flame test, the door to be tested formed one end of a rectangular steel box in which was placed a large blow-torch. Air was admitted at the rear of the box. A pyrometer recorded the temperature at the inside surface of the door where flame impinged. The results of the tests are presented in the accompanying table, in which the word 'failed' is to be interpreted as meaning that the door had been damaged to the extent that smoke, but not necessarily flame, issued from its outside surface.

The petrographer engaged in examining the products resulting from the beneficiation of ores and rock minerals is constantly required to develop new means and methods of assaying microscopically the results of such operations. From time to time investigators have published descriptions of apparatus that have aided in solving problems in processes f physical separation. Thus, in 191.9, Coghill and Bonardi 31 published a paper covering the application of the binocular microscope and camera lucida to the microscopic analysis of pulverized ores. Similar work has been published by Schneiderhohn 4/, Schwartz 5/, and Head and his associates6/, 7/, 8/. The present paper goes further and considers application of the polarizing comparison-microscope to problems directly concerned with mineral dressing where it is desirable to compare analogous products, and in addition it suggests new uses in various related fields. This work was conducted under the cooperative agreements of the Southern Experiment Station of the Federal Bureau of Mines and. the University of Alabama.

Owing to the daily exposures of uranium mining personnel to 222Rn daughters, a device is needed that will continually monitor individual exposure. Such a device has been built and tested by the Bureau of Mines and is known as a radon daughter dosimeter. This is an electronic instrument using a solid-state detector and circuitry. The concept of the instrument, which is a personal device worn throughout the working shift, is to evaluate an individual's cumulative exposure to airborne radon progeny, expressed in units of working level hours. Since the instrument is in close proximity to the miner and measures continual exposure, it avoids the errors caused by the present technique of spot checking of the environment and provides a more accurate account of total cumulative exposure.

In a study of the blast-furnace process, the Bureau of Mines has made many experiments for the purpose of determining the exact nature of the combustion of coke in the neighborhood of the tuyeres. Two papers1 presented at a meeting of this Institute discussed somewhat the practical aspects of coke combustibility in its relation to the operation of the blast furnace. In a later paper,2 Sherman and Kinney discussed the possible effect of variations in the combustibility of cokes on the furnace operation, and find that the "reoxidation theory" of Koppers and the "heat concentration theory" of Brassert³ are insuffcient to explain the variation in the conduct of different cokes that has been observed by furnace operators. In their report to the D-5 Committee of the American Society for Testing Materials, with which the Bureau of Mines has been cooperating, Perrott and Fieldner4 seem to agree with Sherman and Kinney that, for practical purposes, the nature of the combustion of coke at the tuyeres of any furnace is constant and is affected neither by the physical properties of the coke nor by the nature of the furnace operation. They omit as unimportant any tests on the combustibility of coke from their proposed methods for standard tests on coke. In this research work, a process was described for the recovery of copper and zinc in copper converter flue dust from the Black Sea Copper Works' Samsun Smelter Plant. After characterization of a representative flue dust sample, the process included roasting of the flue dust and then leaching in dilute sulfuric acid solution. Roasting time and temperature were studied to determine the optimum roasting conditions. Sulphuric acid concentration, duration, temperature of leaching and solid to liquid ratio were the parameters studied in the bench scale laboratory leaching experiments.

Concentrated hydrogen peroxide (H202) is a highly reactive oxidizing agent that liberates heat when it decomposes. The heat liberated may be sufficient to ignite combustibles with which the peroxide comes in contact. For this reason, concentrated hydrogen peroxide should be handled only by personnel familiar with its many unique properties.6 Hydrogen peroxide is used as a bleaching agent in the manufacture of textiles; this is its major single use in the United States. It is also employed as a reagent in chemical synthesis, as a source of free radicals to start polymerization, as a foaming agent in the manufacture of porous substances, and for its effect on biological processes. Moreover, highly concentrated hydrogen peroxide is a compact source of energy that can be utilized both as a monopropellant and as the oxidizer in a bipropellant system, During World War II, large quantities of highly concentrated hydro- gen peroxide were used as propellants, particularly in Germany. Since then, production of the peroxide has increased rapidly; in the United States alone it has more than doubled since 1950.7 Because of its widespread use, increasing interest has been shown in the hazards of handling the high- strength peroxide.

Over the past 14 years, the efforts of 2 companies and several individuals have outlined a major solfataric gold ore body in the Summitville district in the southeast San Juan Mountains of Colorado. The hard work of these years could not have flowered without a dedication to modern exploration methods, an intense interest in new theories of ore genesis, and a relentless discontent with the accepted geology of the Summitville area. To set the stage for this discovery period, it must be noted that it began 100 years after gold was first found at Summitville. It was the height of the "porphyry copper" era and gold was still not a part of the explorationists' portfolio. It was also a time of great intellectual stimulation. Theories were rapidly developing to relate different types of ore deposition and to place ore genesis within the fabric of plate tectonics. Summitville itself had just been linked to the newly discovered Platoro caldera complex and the Platoro lineament. This in turn related Summitville to the other San Juan volcanic field caldera ore deposits.

The activity of Sb,03 in PbO-Sb,03 slags containing less than 50 mol pct Sb,03 was determined by the inert-gas saturation method at 700°C. In this composition range, the activity gf SbzO3 shows a strong negative deviation from ideality. The activity of PbO in these slags was calculated by application of the Gibbs-Duhem iniegration to the Sb203 activity data. The calculated activity of PbO in slags containing more than 63 mol pct PbO was found to deviate in a positive direction from ideality uthile a negative deviation was found for slags containing less PbO. The standard Gibbs free energies of formation of Sb,03 and PbO. Sb203 have been calculated and compared with existing data in the literature. The activity of Sb203 in PbO-Si0,-Sb203 (PbO/SiO, = 2) slags containing less than 25 mol pct Sb,03 was also determined by the inert-gas saturation method at 700°C. In this composition range, the activity of Sbz03 shows a very large negative deviation from ideality. VERY little experimental work has been published in the past to determine equilibrium data in the oxide systems connected with the refining of lead. These data are of value since impurities such as antimony, arsenic, and tin must be removed from lead and recovered for further treatment. Equilibrium studies on antimony and arsenic systems are also of interest for the design of new processes for lead refining and lead dross treatment. Maier and ~incke' first determined the liquidus curves for the PbO-Sb203 system and identified the compound PbO . Sb203. They found the phase diagram for this system to be two simple eutectics located on either side of the congruent melting compound. They also determined a very limited amount of vapor pressure data for Sb406 abbve PbO-Sba3 melts at 697"~. A second phase diagram investigation on this system was reported by Hennig and Kohlmeyer' who confirmed the existence of the compound PbO . Sb203 as well as the form of the diagram. A disagreement was noticed, however, in that their liquidus temperatures over nearly the entire composition range were higher than those reported by Maier and Hincke. Barthel~ and pelze14 redetermined the liquidus curve at the PbO-rich end of the PbO-Sb@, system and agreed very closely with the results of Maier and Hincke. None of the investigators mentioned above reported any mutual solid solubility in the PbO-SbD3 system. Zunkel and Larson5 have determined the phase diagram for the PbO-rich end of the PbO-Sb203 system by slag-metal equilibrium studies in the Pb-PbO-Sb203 system and by thermal analysis studies in the PbO-Sbz03 system. A maximum solid solubility of 5.6 mol pct Sb203 in PbO was observed at the eutectic temperature of 604°C. Their results for the phase diagram agree favorably with those of Maier and Hincke. The vapor pressure of Sb2O3 in the temperature range from 470" to 800°C has been determined by Hincke, using a modification of the transportation meth~d.~ His results for temperatures below the melting point of Sba3 are the only data reported in the published literature. The predominant vapor species has been shown to be Sb,06 by Norman and staley.? Myzenkov and Klushin,8 using the boiling-point method, have determined the pressure of Sb406 above liquid SbD3 in the temperature range from 715" to 1025°C. The agreement between these two studies is not very close. A portion of the discrepancy lies in the fact that Hincke used silica crucibles, which were attacked by the liquid Sbz03 at high temperatures. This fact does not account, however. for the large difference observed at the melting point. ~aier' gives a brief summary of vapor pressure data for Sb,O, above pure liquid Sbz03 which agree quite well with the data of Myzenkov and Klushin at temperatures near the melting point. This paper describes the determination of Sb2O3 activity data in the PbO-Sb203 and Pb0-Si02-Sb203 (PbO/SiOz = 2) systems by the inert-gas saturation method. These activity data are compared with the data calculated by Zunkel and arson. EXPERIMENTAL Materials. The materials used in this investigation were analytical reagent-grade PbO (99.8 pct PbO, 0.14 pct insoluble in CHsCOOH, 0.02 pct not precipitated by HB, 0.1 pct CaO, and 0.08 pct SiOz), Sbf13 (99.6 pct Sb203, 0.004 PC~ C1-, 0.005 PC~ SO;-, 0.15 p~t AS, 0.001 pct Fe, and 0.03 pct other heavy metals such as Pb), and SiOz (chromatographic grade). Apparatus for Vapor Pressure Determinations. The apparatus used in this investigation consisted of a transportation reaction system with two separate gas trains. The argon transporting gas was first mixed with a small amount of hydrogen, metered, and dried by passage through silica gel and anhydrone drying tubes arranged in series. After this preliminary drying, the argon was passed through copper wool at 500°C to convert the residual oxygen to water vapor which was removed by three anhydrone drying tubes. In the course of an investigation3 of the flow of gases through beds of broken solids the author obtained a number of data .on the specific volume of beds of broken solids of variously mixed sizes. A mathematical theory of the limiting conditions has been developed and some generalizations have been made for intermediate cases. A more definite knowledge of the relation between space occupied and size composition would be valuable to all those who are handling large quantities of broken materials. Such knowledge might be advantageously applied to the operation of a coke oven. For example, the output of the oven depends in general upon the number of pounds of coal which can be put in the oven at charging. It is known that the capacity of one battery of ovens was increased several per cent by slightly increasing the proportion of fine material in the charge.

A table concentrate obtained experimentally by the New Occidental Gold Mines N.L. has unusual interest on account of the presence in it of abundant coated or "black" gold. The concentrate was obtained from ore from the New Cobar mine, Cobar, New South Wales, by feeding the oversize product from a "Dorr Bowl classifier to a Card table.Its assay value was 129 oz. of gold and 52 oz. of silver per ton, yet practically no free gold could be seen on panning.When, however, the concentrate was digested in hydrochloric acid fine rusty gold could be obtained by panning.The following chemical analysis was carried out by the mining company on a similar sample of concentrate.

"In this review, the sintering process is first described and analyzed to identify the key factors affecting the structure and quality of iron ore sinter. Under fixed sintering conditions, the granulation efficiency, nucleus stability and primary sinter melt volume and properties of the iron ore are considered to have significant influence on the sinter structure and quality. Discussion is then focused on the effects of the chemical, physical and mineralogical characteristics of the iron ore on these key factors, and the consequences for sinter quality.IntroductionSintering is the most economic and widely used agglomeration process to prepare iron ore fines for blastfurnace use. In modern blast furnaces, particularly in East Asia, iron ore sinter typically constitutes more than 70% of blast-furnace ferrous feed. High sinter quality and efficient sinter production are thus required both to withstand extreme operating conditions and maintain the productivity of modern blast furnaces. At the same time, due to the increasing depletion of high-grade iron ore resources from large deposits, iron ore producers are moving toward developing an increasing number of deposits of much smaller sizes to maintain current production levels. It is therefore imperative for iron ore producers to develop long-term strategies to maintain the quality and consistency of the iron ore fines they are producing while exploiting these smaller, complex deposits. The iron grade, gangue minerals present, overall mineralogy as well as physical characteristics of iron ore fines being mined from these different deposits vary considerably. Overall, ores now have highly complex mineralogy, are becoming more porous and friable, and contain increasing amounts of gangue minerals, which will have important implications for the sintering process and sinter quality.Blending is one of the most effective options being explored by iron ore producers to deal with multiple small complex deposits. This allows the iron ore producers to reduce the number of products and take full advantage of the unique characteristics of each individual deposit to achieve long-term product consistency while increasing production. Blending is also a common practice in sinter plants as it is almost impossible to produce from one single ore a high-performance sinter mixture with the required processing characteristics. A typical sinter mixture used in Japanese steel mills (Nakano and Okazaki, 2007; Matsumura et al., 2013) often contains five or more ores to achieve balanced sinter quality and productivity with relatively low cost of raw materials."

Ligas de Ti β apresentam baixo módulo de elasticidade, boa resistência mecânica e excelente biocompatibilidade. Dentre essas ligas, têm-se as Gum Metal, as quais possuem boa resistência mecânica e superelasticidade a temperatura ambiente. Essas ligas podem ser utilizadas para fabricação de biomateriais como stents e implantes. Para produção de uma Gum Metal é recomendado a adição de baixos teores de oxigênio, assim como uma deformação plástica acentuada. Neste trabalho, uma Gum Metal de composição Ti-29Nb-13Ta-4,6Zr-0,07O (%peso) foi produzido por meio de deformação plástica severa pelo método High Pressure Torsion (HPT), seguida de tratamento térmico de envelhecimento. O objetivo do presente trabalho foi avaliar a influência dos processamentos empregados, analisando a evolução microestrutural, estabilização e formação de fases, bem como a variação das propriedades da liga estudada. As amostras foram caracterizadas por microscopia ótica (MO), difração de raios X (DRX) e microdureza Vickers. Via MO e DRX foi possível observar uma maior estabilização da fase β, bem como a formação da fase ω após o processamento por HPT e envelhecimento. Um aumento na microdureza foi observado após HPT, devido a deformação plástica severa imposta. Observou-se também um aumento na microdureza com envelhecimento, que está diretamente relacionada com a modificação microestrutural observada.

THE iron and steel activities of this meeting opened on Monday morning with the steel melting session," with G. B. Waterhouse in the chair and A. L. Feild as vice-chairman. N. A. Zeigler's paper, on "Gases Extracted From Iron Carbon Alloys by Vacuum Melbing," created considerable interest and the discussion in general was most favorable. H. W. Gillett and Louis Jordan of the Bureau questioned the method of analysis for oxygen and C. H. Herty, Jr., and J. M. Gaines, Jr., I , expressed their surprise at the large amount of oxygen with the high ,carbon alloys. Whether the gases found existed as gas in blowholes or as oxide inclusions was also a moot point. A paper by C. D. King, on "Basic Open-Hearth Yields," was an extremely interesting and valuable contribution. It was discussed by C. E.Kinney and A. L. Feild and numerous questions were asked throughout the presentation. Mr. King then presented a critical analysis of the losses together with novel methods of calculating them. A paper by C. H. Herty, Jr., and J. M. Gaines, Jr., on "Unreduced Oxides in Pig Iron and Their Elimination in the Basic Open-Hearth Furnace," followed. The question of silicates and oxides in pig iron created much discussion, notably by Henry Hanson and W. J. MacKenzie, who gave figures on chipping cost as a function of blast-furnace practice.

"Inco's Matte Separation Plant is a unique mineral processing facility having no process tailings stream. Each product is a high-grade concentrate with strict assay specifications which are defined by the downstream refining route. The most recent column application in the flowsheet, copper scavenging in the production of a high quality nickel concentrate, is described in detail. Testwork in pilot-scale columns (0.038 m, 0.051 m and 0.10 m in diameter) was used to develop a model of the copper scavenging system. This data was then used to simulate the performance of plant-scale equipment. The relationships thus established were confirmed by a series of plant tests in a 1.8 m diameter column. Column results consistently exceeded conventional cell performance. The modelling was extended to assess full plant production requirements and, as a result, a 2.1 m diameter column was specified for this application. Engineering design for this column is currently underway and the column is scheduled to be commissioned later in 1991.INTRODUCTIONMatte SeparationINCO's Matte Separation Plant is a part of the Copper Cliff Smelter complex near Sudbury Ontario. The flowsheet and the development of column flotation within it have been described previously (Feeley et al., 1987, Wilson et al., 1989). The plant feed is a synthetic Bessemer Matte from the Nickel smelter. This matte is slow cooled to promote grain growth and typically assays 46-52% Ni, 23-27% Cu. These elements are present primarily in sulphide form (Ni3S2 and Cu2S respectively) with some metallic alloy also precipitating from the sulphur deficient matte. Minor amounts of iron, precious metals, and nuisance elements are also present.The matte separation process is, in concept, relatively simple. Following magnetic removal of the metallic alloy from the feed, the flowsheet is designed to float a high grade copper concentrate from the nickel sulphide matrix. A simplified flowsheet of the process is shown in figure 1."

This paper, describing the concentrator of the Molybdenum Corporation of America in Taos County, northern New Mexico. 7 miles east of Questa, is one of a series on milling methods being prepared for and published by the United States Bureau of Mines. The mine from which the ore comes is 1 1/4 miles from the mill, and produces about 40 tons of ore per day by the cut-and-fill method.3 The ore contains about 5 per cent of MoS2. The mill has a capacity of 50 tons of ore per day and utilizes flotation methods. Water is taken from Red River. Power is generated by a water wheel, or by a Diesel engine in times of water shortage during the winter. The mill is located close to the bottom of a canyon, in order to obtain maximum head or, the water wheel, and the flow of ore is therefore maintained partly by gravity and partly by an elevator and pumps. ORE TREATED The MoS2 content of the concentrator feed ranges from 4.5 to 7.5 biotite, fluorite, small amounts of rhodochrosite and calcite, and the minerals of the granodiorite country rock.

DOME MINES, Limited, is a gold producer situated in the Porcupine area of Ontario, 500 miles north of Toronto. During the year 1960, '71 4,600 tons of ore were milled, yielding gold bullion valued at $6,025,370. Prior to conversion to natural gas, an average of 3,200 tons of coal was consumed annually, one third of which was obtained from Canadian sources with the remainder coming from the United States. Due to the distances involved, the freight charges increased the pithead cost by as much as ISO per cent. Steam is generated at a central boiler plant and used for timber treatment, plant heating and process steam. Until August, 1960, steam was supplied during the winter months by two water tube coal-fired boilers, each rated at 200 boiler horsepower at 100 per cent output. "Rare earth metals usually contain large amount of oxygen because of their reactiveness, and therefore oxygen removal is one of the major problems on the purification of rare earth metals. In the present research work, halide flux treatment at high temperature under inert gas atmosphere was applied to the oxygen removal from neodymium. NdF3 was used as a halide flux. Deoxidation reaction and its mechanism were discussed based on the experimental results. Halide flux treatment is very effective for oxygen removal from rare earth metals.IntroductionSolid Sate Electrotransport (SSE) process has been successfully applied for the elimination of interstitial gaseous impurities from chemically active metals[l]-[5]. However, to achieve a higher effectiveness of the SSE process, it is required a very low initial impurity content in the metal. In case of rare earth metals, it is known that they usually contain large amount of oxygen that should be lowered as much as possible before applying the SSE process. In addition, if effective oxygen removal is achieved by simple process, it is significant also from the industrial viewpoint. In the present work, the application of a halide flux treatment is investigated to remove oxygen from neodymium by using NdF3 as a flux. At first, deoxidation reaction and its mechanism were discussed based on the phase diagram of the Nd-NdF3-Ndp3 quasi-ternary system. Based on the results, oxygen content in deoxidized neodymium was calculated theoretically and it was verified by deoxidation experiments."

Various styles of gold mineralisation pose problems during sampling because of their complex gold grade distribution and presence of coarse gold. Effective sampling and sample preparation forms the basis of resource estimates. The design of a sampling and assaying protocol must be based on a thorough understanding of the mineralisation in question, which should include consideration of gold particle size and mass distribution. The proportion of coarse gold within samples has a profound effect on the requirements for sample preparation and assaying. Choice of preparation procedure and assay type is of critical importance if sampling errors are to be minimised. Traditional fire assays, using small charge sizes, often understate assays gained from large charge sizes and techniques such as screen fire assay and LeachWELL. Proper application of the Theory of Sampling reduces errors during collection, preparation and assaying. A quality control/quality assurance program must be implemented and critically assessed. A case study from the Ballarat mine is presented, which is characterised by substantial quantities of coarse-gold hosted in quartz veins. Diamond core drilling is the key input into resource delineation. A number of different sampling and assay options have been trialled over the recent project history. The current sampling protocol utilises whole drill core, using LeachWELL assays after logging and photography.CITATION:Dominy, S C, 2017.
