The systems optimization approach to mine planning has led to the adoption of a number of mathematical and computer models for short, medium and long range planning of mining operations. In the realm of open pit mine planning, the most common uses of such an approach have been in the areas of optimal pit design and planning of materials handling operations. Since a truck-shovel combination is the most widely used method of materials handling in open pit mines, a number of models have been presented in the past to analyze and optimize such systems. Broadly, these models can be divided into two categories. The simulation model, which is primarily used as an aid in analyzing the performance of either an operating or a proposed haulage system under the influence of externally alterable parameters, and the linear or integer model which is used as a tool for short or medium term optimization of the system under the operating constraints. In the first part of this paper, a brief discussion is presented of the linear/integer optimization models presented in the past, and in the second part a new model is described which is actually a combination of the simulation and the integer programming models. In its bare essentials, the model consists of an integer optimization algorithm, but the constraints are regularly and dynamically updated by incorporating the conclusions drawn from a stochastic simulation model of the mine haulage system. Since the successive optimization is performed by the mine operator who manipulates the constraints to guide the model towards the optimum, the mystical black box approach is minimized and should help in adoption of the model by the mine personnel. Also, by combining the stochastic simulation model and the deterministic integer model, some of the advantages of each are acquired.

The State Electricity Commission of Victoria is conducting a program of research and development into alternatives to the use of conventional boilers for the generation of electricity from brown coal. The objectives of the program are to reduce the cost of electricity generation and also to improve the thermal efficiency so as to reduce the emission of greenhouse gases and other pollutants. The program presently includes the following four technologies: Hydro-thermal Drying, Direct Coal Fired Gas Turbine, Integrated Gasification Combined Cycle, and Steam Fluidised Bed Drying. The Hydro-thermal Drying process produces a combustible coal-water-slurry fuel which is suitable for use in a coal fired gas turbine. The coal fired gas turbine has the potential to produce electricity at a lower cost than conventional power stations and when combined with a steam cycle, it will also use significantly less coal. The Integrated Gasification Combined Cycle process gasifies the coal, cleans the gas, and then bums it in a gas turbine/combined cycle. This process is being developed in Europe and the USA in order to meet their stringent emission regulations. It offers Victoria cleaner more efficient and cheaper electricity.

Booster fans in underground coal mines are often located using the concept of a neutral point. Normally, intake airways are maintained at higher absolute pressure than return airways, so air leaks from intake to return. By adding a significant pressure force to a region of a ventilation system, booster fans installed in a return airway can increase the pressure in the return so that air leaks from return to intake. This is commonly referred to as recirculation. The neutral point occurs at the location in the system where the pressure difference between the intake and the return airway(s) is zero and at this point there is no leakage or recirculation. Ideally, placing a booster fan near the neutral point minimizes leakage and recirculation; however, in practice the position of the neutral point is not static and it changes as the ventilation system parameters change. This paper presents a study of how changes in the system parameters affect the location of the neutral point in a model coal mine ventilation system. First the effects of booster fan pressure and location on the neutral point are evaluated. Next the effect of increasing mine distance, and therefore mine resistance, on the location of the neutral point and the magnitude of recirculation is evaluated.

According to the Darcy?s law, filtration rate should increase with increasing pressure drop (?P) across a filter cake. In centrifugal filtration, ?P is created by the free water present on the surface of a filter cake. Thus, ?P can become negative when the free water disappears from the cake surface, which makes it difficult to achieve low cake moistures. In the present work, we have developed methods of overcoming this problem by either increasing the air pressure inside or applying vacuum outside a centrifuge. Laboratory dewatering tests conducted using these provisions showed that the moistures of various minerals and coal fines can be reduced to the level that can obviate the need for thermal drying. The new concept has been successfully tested both at pilot- and full-scale, which lead to commercial deployment through Decanter Machine, Inc., under the trade name Centribaric® centrifuge. INTRODUCTION Alpha-emitting radon daughter products are a recognized health hazard contributing to the development of lung cancer in persons exposed to excessive concentrations over an extended period. The primary control technique used by the mining industry is dilution with fresh air. Because the uranium is deposited in porous sandstone in most U.S. mines, the control of this hazard with dilution requires excessive volumes of air. As the mines become larger and deeper, the cost for ventilation becomes a major expenditure for the mining industry Most mines are maintaining levels of radon daughters lower than required by law but to maintain these present levels the mining companies are going to be drilling more vent holes or using other control techniques as the mine expands. These control techniques are being investigated by the U.S. Bureau of Mines to determine their effectiveness, cost, and safety for underground use. [Instrumentation] The Bureau's early research used batch sampling of both radon and radon daughters for determining the concentrations. In both cases it was determined that batch sampling did not give a complete understanding of what was happening to the concentrations. Therefore, continuous monitoring systems were developed for both. A continuous flow-through radon monitor was developed by the Bureau (Franklin, et al.., 1976) using a modified Lucas flask mounted on a photo-multiplier-tube (PMT). The air was filtered twice prior to entering the flask to remove dust, diesel smoke, moisture, and radon daughters. The signal from the PMT was then inverted, shaped, and driven to a data acquisition system (DAS) which accumulated the signals. The DAS has two comparators for setting the scan time and interval, a 24-hour clock with Julian date, a printer, and a perforated paper tape punch. Sampling time is determined by the type of experiment being conducted. Our normal sampling time is one 10-minute scan every 15 minutes, but could be set as low as one scan every minute or as long as a 16-minute scan every 167 minutes. There are two models of the DAS. One is a 10-channel system and the other a 30-channel system. On a 10channel system normally 6 channels are used for radon and radon daughters and the other four channels are used for temperature, absolute pressure, air velocity, and relative humidity as described by McVey (1977). Figure 1 shows a scan of five channels monitoring the radon concentration from intake to exhaust in a stope for a non-work day. If the radon concentration stayed this constant during work days, then continuous monitoring would not be necessary. [ ] Droullard (1977) developed a continuous alpha-beta monitor. This monitor has been modified so that it can be used with the DAS previously mentioned. Control Techniques The U.S. Bureau of Mines has conducted research in controlling airborne radon/radon daughter for 10 years. Major efforts have been conducted in sealing the rock to prevent the release of radon, bulkheading to seal nonproductive areas, backfilling with classified mill tailings, and positive pressure ventilation. Also, tests have been conducted to determine the mining cycles contribution to the radon problem. Surveys One stope with two intakes and one exhaust was continuously monitored to determine the effects of blasting, mucking, and drilling on the airborne radon concentrations (Franklin, et al., 1976). Two other detectors were located inside the stope which were close to the mining activity. In this stope no appreciable change in radon was observed during drilling holes for blasting and roofbolts. Simulation techniques have offered significant boosts toward a cost-and-time-optimized planning of construction projects by enabling project managers to effectively comprehend the behavior of projects. Using historic data from projects of like nature, simulation considers uncertainties involved in a project through accommodating the stochastic modeling parameters. However, the heavy reliance on the statistical data and not taking into account the context-specific features of the project cause the degradation in the realism and accuracy of the simulation models. Similarly, the extent to which a historic pattern could be retrofitted to new projects will decrease in line with the growing uniqueness of the projects and the novelty of construction methods. Furthermore, the existing real-time simulation frameworks are not capable of distinguishing the transient environmental changes, with minimal long-term impacts on the productivity, from the influential changes that will greatly impact an operation. In addition, existing simulation tools are devoid of location awareness, resulting in the inability to consider safety threats in their representation of the project. To address these issues, this research proposes a framework based on the integration of new tracking technologies used in Automated Machine Guidance (AMG) with simulation-driven 4D modeling methods. The proposed framework automates the adjustment of the simulation model based on the updated data from the site, and thus transforms simulation from a predictive tool used at the planning phase to a proactive monitoring platform usable throughout the planning and construction phases. A prototype is developed to test and demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed approach.

A novel separation process for detoxifying cadmium-containing residues arising from zinc hydrometallurgical processes has been developed. An initial investigation indicated that a high concentration of zinc in the sulfate solution can be effectively separated from cadmium by solvent extraction with P204 (di(2-ethylhexly)phosphoric acid, D2EHPA). The mixture of sulfuric acid and ammonium citrate ((NH4)3C6H5O7) is thus used to extract metals from the residue at room temperature. Copper in the leachate is recovered by solvent extraction (SX) with LIX 973. Cobalt in the raffinate from the copper SX process is recovered by precipitation with a-nitroso-ß-naphthol. The results show that more than 50% of the copper and virtually all the zinc, cadmium and cobalt in the residue can be leached under the experimental conditions used here. Virtually all dissolved copper and cobalt can be recovered in the subsequent solvent extraction and precipitation processes. The presence of (NH4)3C6H5O7 could significantly facilitate the extraction of zinc by D2EHPA in the subsequent separation of zinc and cadmium. More than 97% of the dissolved zinc can be recovered through a two-stage counter current solvent extraction process. After separating copper, cobalt and zinc, cadmium can easily be recovered from the solution either by cementation with zinc powder or by electrowinning, while the purified solution can be recycled back to the leaching process.

This paper presents experimental evidence that supports the use of bromine/bromide as a potential alternative to conventional cyanidation for gold leaching. The study evaluated a brominebased lixiviant, Stabilized Bromine, with considerably lower vapour pressure than liquid bromine. Using a rotating device, the rate of gold dissolution was determined at various concentrations of this reagent. The reactivity of pure pyrite, arsenopyrite and chalcopyrite minerals was also evaluated in stabilized bromine reagent. Furthermore, bromine leaching of gold in a number of gold bearing ores was undertaken. Results showed that significantly higher gold recovery can be achieved with bromine than with cyanide when leaching gold encapsulated in sulphides, but bromine consumption was high owing to simultaneous oxidation of the sulphides. The greatest promise for the bromine leach process was with oxidized gold ores. The recovery of gold from oxide ores with bromine was comparable to that achievable with cyanide and bromine consumption was reasonable when leaching was conducted at a near neutral pH of ~6. In the case of oxidized gold ores containing copper mineralization, it is possible that bromine consumption may be lower than cyanide consumption, since there is evidence to suggest that bromine is less reactive than cyanide with copper minerals.

In the current work, a three-dimensional model coupling turbulent flow, heat and solute transport was developed to investigate the solute transport and redistribution in the mold of slab continuous casting where the Reynolds number is very high and the molten steel flows strongly. The conservation equations of momentum, energy and species for a multicomponent system which includes solute element C, Si, Mn, P, S were solved with the commercial software ANSYS Fluent. The parameters used in the model are based on the actual continuous casting. The fluid flow, temperature distribution and solute elements distribution were analyzed. Results showed that negative segregation occurred near the strand surface, and the species concentration reached a peak value at the solidification front during solidification. The segregation degree of solute element S is higher than the other solute elements because of its lower equilibrium partition coefficient. The species concentration in the liquid pool is homogeneous because of the turbulent flow effect.

"INTRODUCTIONThe Hemlo area is located in Northern Ontario, some 350 km east of Thunder Bay along highway 17. Hemlo is Canada's largest, recent discovery of gold ore. Three companies, Lac, Noranda, and Teck are currently developing mines and processing facilities in the area. A combined milling capacity of approximately 10,000 tonnes per day will ultimately be available in the area. The gold yield will be between 750,000 to 1,000,000 ozs. per year. This will slightly more than double Ontario's gold production but only represents 2.5% of the total world gold production.Lac Minerals Ltd. is substantially committed to the gold mining business. Lac currently operates four (4) gold mines and mills and produces 300,000 ozs. per year. Lac's Hemlo development will put the company in the position of number one gold producer in Canada.The Lac Hemlo ore body has an estimated reserve of 37 million tonnes at 6.2 g/t. The mining will take place at an initial rate of 3,000 t/d commencing in the first quarter of 1986. The mine and plant will be expanded to 6,000 t/d in 1988. At this capacity, Lac will be the largest producer in the Hemlo area.1. GEOLOGYThe orebody is divided into two (2) zones for mining purposes. The 'A' Zone is to the east and dips to the Northeast from surface to 300 m below surface. This zone has a strike length of 250 m to 300 m at an average width of 20 m. The upperpart of the zone will be mined by open pit and the remainder from underground. The 'B' Zone, to the north west of the 'A' Zone, although lined up is not necessarily an extension of 'A' Zone. 'B' Zone has a known strike length of 600 m and is open to depth and along the strike. It is over 70 m wide in the core. This zone holds most of the property's known reserves. 'C' Zone with narrow gold zones is under exploration in the south west portion of the property."

New underground mining technology is evolving through the use of large-diameter bore holes containing individually restricted charge weights. This article presents summary observations on cube-root scaling trials using single and rows of charge blasting in sand and in frozen ground. These observations have some bearing on the evolving underground practice, especially where charges of appropriate geometry are used.

Geotechnical input is interwoven into the mining process at George Fisher South Mine from the planning and design of working areas to the closure of worked out areas and maintenance of life of mine and long term excavations. The methodology used consists of a mixture of application of established theoretical principles and guidelines derived from successful historical experience. In the development stage, including long term infrastructure excavations, the process takes into account the expected life of the excavation, usage and expected stress changes during its life span. On the stoping stage, the design process takes into account the local rock mass conditions, geological structure setting and previous experience in a particular orebody. Due to the high variation in age of currently used excavations, a rolling monitoring and risk assessment process for long term and life of mine excavations and infrastructure is maintained. This paper has as an output the process that must be followed to ensure an excavation on the highly dynamic mining environment at George Fisher South Mine is blasted and maintained in compliance with applicably commonly accepted safety and industry requirements.

Alluvial gold grades are typically highly erratic. It is very often difficult to establish with confidence the in situ grades of reserve blocks due to the small number of pit or drill hole samples available, and their erratic values. Trends in grade are often obscure. Geostatical methods are inappropriate due to the extreme nugget effect found in alluvial gold field data. Classical statistics appear more suited to such data but require assumptions to be made regarding the nature of the population sampled. Recent developments in computer intensive non-parametric statistical methods provide a new approach to dealing with some of the above problems. These methods avoid making assumptions about the type of population distribution, usually through some kind of re-sampling scheme. The bootstrap procedure involves taking the estimate of interest and synthesising its population of by re-sampling the original data a large number of times (1000+), at random and with replacement. The synthetic population is then used to draw conclusions about the likely behaviour of the true population.

"Hot deformability of M42 tool steel additionally alloyed with cobalt and molybdenum was investigated. Hot-compression tests were carried out in the temperature range 850 °C -1200 °C, at strain rates range 0.001--6s-l up to strain of0.9. Field-emission scanning electron microscope and optical microscopy were used for characterization of microstructure of deformed samples, which revealed a very complex precipitation of carbides that strongly depends on the soaking temperature, the soaking time, the stress state, the deformation temperature as well as on the strain rate. Gathered data was used to calculate the processing parameters such as process maps, apparent activation energies and strain hardening exponents. For better understanding of thermodynamical properties of the studied steel a simultaneous thermal analysis was conducted. Furthermore the analysis of phase equilibrium was calculated using Thermo-Cale software. On the basis of these studies the optimal soaking temperature and process windows were determined.IntroductionHot workability ofledeburitic tool steels is important economic factor. This means that for each tool steel individuallysafe range of hot working parameters should be revealed. Publications in the literature with regard to the hot workability of tool steels are rare and therefore more information from this research area is desired.The relatively low hot workability of ledeburitic tool steels, i.e. steels in which the solidification is completed by a eutectic transformation of the residual interdendritic liquid to austenite and various alloy carbides (ledeburitic carbides), is usually characterized by the production of surface and internal cracks during the hot deformation."

A modified push-pull field test and a computer model of cation exchange were developed to aid in evaluating cation exchange parameters prior to in situ mining. Reliable determination of these parameters is essential when modeling restoration of groundwater quality. The field test involves a much larger volume and much less disturbance to the ore sample than is feasible with laboratory measurements. This test can be performed in two or three weeks. It is relatively inexpensive, requiring one injection- production well and two or more wells for collecting samples of leach solution. The use of the model in interpreting test results is illustrated with field data from an in situ uranium mine. Much of the research was performed by the University of Texas at Austin, and was partially funded by the Bureau of Mines.

The sulphides can be arranged in a series determined by the relative amounts of ionic and covalent bonding present. This series is similar to the paragenetic series common to most sulphide ore deposits. Investigation of the surface tensions of the corresponding heavy metal iodides by the maximum bubble pressure method throws some light upon this relationship. It is shown that the surface tension of molten iodides decreases as the chemical bonding within them becomes more covalent. These results are interpreted in terms of the constitution of the melts, and are extended to cover the case of sulphides in solution in a silicate melt. It is concluded that sulphides tend to lower the surface tension of silicate melts and that this tendency becomes greater as the bonding within the dissolved sulphide groups becomes more covalent. A possible relationship between this conclusion and the origin of paragenesis in sulphide ore deposits is indicated.INTRODUCTIONIt is well known that the order of deposition, or paragenesis of sulphide minerals is remarkably similar in hypogene ore deposits throughout the world. This widespread similarity points towards the operation of some fundamental process which must be intimately connected with -the genesis of these ores. Oil sands processing generates huge volumes of slurry, known as tailings, that is being stored in tailings ponds. The volume of produced tailings is a very important factor in oil sands surface mine planning, because the available area for dam construction is limited to the lease areas. On the other hand, oil sands operators cannot leave mine sites without reclaiming the tailings ponds. Since most of the reclamation material is generated in either oil sands mining or processing, it is reasonable to include reclamation material requirement as part of long-term mine planning. In this paper, an integrated optimization framework is proposed to maximize the net present value (NPV) of the produced oil sands, with respect to tailings capacity constraints and reclamation material requirements. A mixed integer linear programming (MILP) model is developed to find the optimal solution for long-term mine planning problem. A sample bitumen processing flow sheet is used to formulate the volume of produced tailings, based on Clark hot water extraction method. To verify the proposed model, it is coded in Matlab and run using CPLEX. Run results for real-case oil sands dataset show that the optimal production schedule meets material requirements for reclamation, tailings volume is within tailings capacity range in all periods and the production schedule follows the predetermined horizontal direction.

Para atingir o resultado sem investimento, foram desenvolvidas automatizações através de programação em Visual Basic (VBA) e Scripts SAP, utilizando como plataforma o Microsoft Excel. A integração do Excel com o SAP se mostrou eficaz, possibilitando a execução de tarefas de forma automatizada em massa, aumentando a confiabilidade das informações e reduzindo o tempo total de execução das atividades em 67%.

"The molybdenite property of Brynnor Mines Limited, Boss Mountain Division (wholly-owned subsidiary of Noranda Mines Limited), is situated approximately 360 miles northeast of Vancouver on the east slope of Takom-kane mountain in British Columbia's Cariboo District. Orebodies at the deposit fall into two categories; quartz breccia, and veins and stringers. The development of the breccia ore zone was started in June, 1964. The bulk of the ore is being mined from the stringer ore zone. The ore-body has been divided into 100-foot stopes and pillars. A sub-level blasthole method is used and the broken ore is handled in drawpoints and scram drifts. The development, drilling, blasting and handling of the ore are reviewed. The future pillar recovery operation is also analysed. The paper is also concerned with a scheduled shaft sinking program."
