The 2 360 t/h two module Phola coal preparation plant represents anew era of large plant in the Witbank coalfield designed to extend its life to 2020 and beyond. The plant uses the optimum processing model for Witbank coals, receiving a feed coal size of -50 mm, wet screening it into coarse and small coal fractions 50 x12 and 12 x0.63 mm before processing them in parallel through two primary DM cyclone sections, in order to make a 27.5 MJ/kg export floats product. The sinks are processed through a common high density DM cyclone section to produce a 21.5?23 MJ/kg thermal coal middlings product. The plant design incorporates the largest size DMS equipment used to date in South African coal preparation plants, i.e. 1 150 mm large diameter pump fed DM cyclones and 4.2 m width banana screens. The fine coal is conventionally processed by spirals, whereas the raw coal slimes are filtered using automated plate and frame filter presses and added to either the middlings or discards depending on its quality. The paper describes the database, innovative design concepts, construction, and commissioning.

This investigation was undertaken to identify nitrogen , oxygen , and sulfur compounds (polar components ) found in catalytically cracked distillate fuel . It is significant that these compounds concentrate in the sediments and gum that form when the fuel is stored . The polar components were divided in three portions by elution from a chromatographic column filled with alumina . After the hydrocarbons were washed through the column with pentane , a benzene eluted extract was removed followed by an ether eluted extract and then an alcohol desorbed fraction . These extracts were individually distilled in a molecular still and the fractions were analyzed by gas chromatography , mass spectrometry , infrared spectrometry , and elemental and functional analyses . Naphthalene and its homologs , phenanthrene and its homologs , and other compounds such as methyl indene , C₂ quinolines , phenyl indan , and the benzothiophenes , appear in the benzene extracts . Quinolines are the major components of the lower boiling fraction of the ether extract , although carbazoles , acridans , and indoles are present in some concentration . Elemental and functional group analyses of the alcohol fraction indicated 10 percent of the distillate portion was nonhydrocarbon , and in this portion the average molecule contained more than one nonhydrocarbon element . Compounds of such complexity are not well known , and standards for positive identification are limited .

The regular activities of the Institute are financed mainly by income derived from members&apos; dues, from advertising in MINING AND METALLURGY, and from the sale of publications to the public. In addition, collateral activities and special projects are financed each year by means of income from endowed funds controlled and administered by the Institute. In the aggregate, the principal sums of these endowments amount to more than $530,000. An active effort is being made to increase the endowment funds of the Institute through a standing committee, of which H. T. Hamilton is chairman, and of which the other members are: W. H. Aldridge, George D. Barron, Cleveland E. Dodge, D. C. Jackling, Henry Krumb and J. V. W. Reynders. This committee feels that there exists a tremendous opportunity for the Institute to be of ever-growing service to the public, to the mineral industries, and to the profession. It welcomes suggestions as to names of men of means who are vitally interested in the mineral industries, and to whom the opportunity to make a contribution or bequest might appeal favorably if presented in the proper light by the committee.

The story of America&apos;s progressing standard of living is the story of machines. The automobile, the airplane and the telephone for example have made our transportation and communication systems what they are today. Even they depend in turn on another machine -- the rock drill. By making it possible to economically mine and quarry minerals in large quantities, this versatile machine supports virtually every American industry relying on the earth for its buried raw materials. And, like all machines, the rock drill&apos;s mechanical evolution was stimulated by production demands placed upon it. All percussion drills are mechanized versions of the original drilling unit -- man, Figure - illustrates a double jack team at work before the turn of the century. The man with the sledge hammer is the impact device while the man sitting is the rotation mechanism and feed motor. The first drifter drills (Figure 2) performed the same function but with increased mechanical efficiency. A piston controlled by a valve produced impact. A built-in ratcheting mechanism provided rotation and a hand-cranked screw provided feed thrust. As the industrial revolution proceeded into the twentieth century, the demand for raw materials stimulated refinements of all recovery machinery, including rock drills. As drills became heavier and more powerful, a mounting (or carrier) had to be provided to move the drill from hole to hole. This resulted in the development of the wagon drill (Figure 3). Propelled by muscle power, the wagon drill was for years the standard tool of the surface drilling industry (Figure 4). Keywords: Pyrometallurgy, steel, hearth, blast furnace The Mittal Steel Company operates about 36 blast furnaces on four continents. Furnaces range from 1100 m3 to 4800 m3 inner volume. The focus of the group is to push for increasing productivity and increasing campaign life. This has been especially challenging, as many of these furnaces were not equipped for long campaigns during their prior rebuilds. Monitoring and operating practices have to be modified to match the new philosophy. Mid-campaign hearth repair strategies and hearth design philosophies have had to be reconsidered. The paper describes experiences with the current hearth designs and measures taken for hearth life extension. Additionally, the philosophy of recent hearth re-designs is discussed.

THE HYDRAULIC TRANSPORT of solids is becoming increasingly prevalent throughout the world. Major long-distance slurry pipelines currently in operation transport commodities such as coal and various ore concentrates distances of up to hundreds of miles. In the United States, a number of large-diameter, high-tonnage pipelines are under consideration for the transport of Western Plains coal to markets up to 1000 miles away. In these and other applications, the solids are generally quite fine, with 14 mesh being a typical limit of particle size for long-distance (over 100 miles) slurry transport. There are applications where it might be practical to transport solids consisting of larger particles distances of up t o 100 miles. Deposits of high-quality metallurgical coal are found in the inner foothills belt along the eastern edge of the Rocky Mountains on the Alberta-B. C. border. There are few existing railroad s and the possibilities of constructing extensions are limited because of environmental and economic factor s. In these circumstances, the most efficient transportation system might consist of a pipeline to transport the coal from the mine to beneficiation plants located near existing railroads 50 or 100 miles away. Such systems would minimize environmental effects, capital cost s and operating costs. To determine whether such a system would be technically feasible, experimental testing is needed to determine the energy requirements for transporting coarse coal in a pipe line. Currently, run-of-mine metallurgical coal is crushed to less than 1 1/2 inches before going to the beneficiation plant. In the proposed scheme, coal of this size would be transported through a pipeline to the beneficiation plant located at the railroad. The Transportation Development Agency and the Department of Supply and Services have awarded a contract to the Saskatchewan Research Council to study pipelining of coarse coal in pipelines ranging from 4 inches to 12 inches in diameter.

One of the chief hazards in mining bituminous coal is the accumulation of coal dust in the mines . When coal dust is thrown into suspension , it can be ignited and exploded by electricity through short -circuiting of mining machinery and trolley wires , or by arcs and sparks . The Bureau of Mines has endeavored to assist the coal -mining industry in preventing disasters from this cause by urging that all bituminous -coal mines be rock -dusted . As it has been difficult to convince some mining men of the danger of ignition of coal dust and of the effectiveness of rock dusting in preventing widespread explosions , a small , portable , coal -dust - explosion gallery has been designed to demonstrate the explosibility of bituminouscoal dust . Such galleries are furnished to Bureau engineers , inspectors , and safety instructors to illustrate visually and impressively the Bureau's accident -prevention educational work on the causes and prevention of dust explosions in bituminous -coal mines .

The year 1940 saw an increase of 20 per cent in oil production over the previous year—compared with a 16 per cent increase the previous year. In all, 25,790,380 bbl. were produced, an increase of 4,414,150 bbl, over 1939 and the largest production figure for south Arkansas since 1928. The older settled production continued to decline. Magnolia accounted for most of the increase, with aid from the other recent deep fields. During the year, 169 wells were drilled, 79 fewer than in the previous year. Of 131 wells drilled in proven fields, 18 were dry. Three of the 38 wildcats were pool openers. The drilling depth record was increased from 9028 to 9550 feet. Trend of Prospecting For the first time since 1936, the search for oil in the deep Smackover limestone slackened perceptibly; g dry wildcats ended in Smackover, 2 in. the underlying Eagle Mills; 7 penetrated Paleozoic beds, while 9 ended in Hosston, 2 in Glen Rose, 2 in Paluxy and 4 in Gulf. Geology The wells listed in Table 2 either resulted in the discovery of new oil pools or, because of their depth or location, afforded impor-tant stratigraphic or structural informa-tion. Fig. I is a general columnar and stratigraphic section showing the relation-ship of the strata within the Comanche series. The nomenclature shown was ac-cepted by the Shreveport Geological Society. It was subsequently published by Imlay,l who indicated probable correlations with other areas and presented evidence for the possible Jurassic age of the under-lying Cotton Valley and Smackover formations. New Fields Pouke.—On June 10, 1940, the Louark Producing Co. completed its No. I Sturgis, sec. I, T. 17 S., R. 27 W., in central Miller County, producing between 3583 and 3607 ft. in the upper part of the Paluxy forma-tion. The well flowed I00 bbl. of 3r.4&apos; gravity oil per day through Ns-in. tubing choke. This discovery resulted from seismograph work. Six other wells were drilled in the area, none of which found production in the original sand. One of these wells is producing from a sand 50 ft. deeper in the section. The others were abandoned. No further development is in prospect. Production is from lenticular sands of the upper Paluxy; 45,556 bbl. had been pro-duced by the end of 1940. There is structural closure against a fault to the northwest. McKanzie.—The Atlantic Refining Com-pany&apos;s No. I Bodcaw Lumber Co., sec. 29, T. 17 S., R. 23 W., eastern central La-fayette County, was completed June 8, 1940, as the eighth and farthest west of the Smackover (Reynolds o6lite) limestone pools. The well flowed 10 bbl. an hour of 58.6&apos; gravity distillate through an 1 1/64 Ma-in. tubing choke, with a gas-oil ratio of 8400:I.

For several years the Bureau of Mines has conducted surveys to determine the changes in motor gasoline being sold throughout the United States. The present survey shows that far the districts in which samples were collected, the average gasoline is becoming more volatile instead of less so, as is sometimes supposed. This year&apos;s gasoline is much more volatile than that sold two years ago, and it has a somewhat better distillation range than last summer&apos;s samples. A comparison of the average figures for several years, shows that motor gasoline is also becoming more uniform in character. The large seasonal change is disappearing, but ?winter gasoline&apos;, still has a lower initial boiling point than "scanner gasoline". This difference in volatility is made intentionally to facilitate starting the motor in cold weather. The end point shown in the present survey is slightly lower either than that of last winter or of the summer of 1921.

Copper-chromium mixed oxides are widely used as catalyst for organic chemicals industry, NOx and CO oxidation, solid propellant etc. In the present investigation, one such spent Cu-Cr catalyst has been tested for recovering copper and chromium values through hydrometallurgical route. The spent catalyst used in this study contains about 42% Cu and 36% Cr. Phase analysis through XRD indicates that major phases are copper chromium oxide (CuCrO2) and copper chromate (CuCr2O4) while minor phase is copper oxide (Cu64O). SEM images show that high energy ball milling changes surface morphology significantly ? more regular shaped grains in unmilled samples changed to fine agglomerates. Surface area also changes significantly due to milling. Preliminary leaching experiments with NH3 and H2SO4 media using unmilled samples indicate that both the media are suitable for selective extraction of copper. About 55% copper recovery is achieved in 2 h using 1.2 M NH3 + 0.2M (NH4)2SO4 solution at 100°C. Increasing NH3 concentration or temperature does not improve the recovery significantly. Under the above conditions chromium, dissolution is insignificant (max. 2.24%). XRD analysis of the residue indicates that copper chromate fraction (CuCr2O4), which is a spinel structure, remains mostly intact. In sulphuric acid media at ambient temperature, 47% copper recovery is achieved with 7.5% (v/v) H2SO4 and maximum of 57% with the increase in acid concentration to 20%. However, 67% recovery is achieved by increasing the leaching temperature to 150°C. High energy ball milled samples show improved leaching efficiency. Under the leaching conditions of 7% H2SO4 (v/v), 2% pulp density, 80°C an unmilled sample yields 47% Cu recovery whereas 3h and 5h milled samples yield 65% and 90% Cu recovery respectively in 2h leaching time. Influence of temperature is also more pronounced in milled sample leaching in comparison to unmilled sample. Water leaching of alkali (NaOH) roasted milled sample carried out at 750°C for 2 h with 100% NaOH (w/w) resulted in 80% Cr recovery as compared to 37% Cr recovery using unmilled sample under the same conditions. The Dumont deposit is a large (1179 Mt reserve), low-grade (0.27 per cent nickel) nickel sulfide project located in the Abitibi region 25 km west of Amos, Quebec. Royal Nickel Corporation (RNC) acquired the project in 2007 and has since taken the deposit through to feasibility. The disseminated nickel sulfide and alloy mineralisation is hosted within the serpentinised dunite subzone of the Dumont Sill; a differentiated, pervasively serpentinised, ultramafic sill of komatiitic affinity. Pentlandite ((Ni,Fe)9S8), heazlewoodite (Ni3S2) and awaruite (Ni2.5Fe) are the dominant nickel-bearing metallic phases and can be recovered by conventional methods (flotation, magnetic separation). Non-recoverable nickel is also present within serpentine and olivine of the silicate matrix.A detailed mineralogical program including 1420 QEMSCAN« samples and 4400 electron microprobe points was undertaken to increase the understanding of the nickel deportment in the various recoverable and non-recoverable phases in a spatial context across the deposit. A total of 105 metallurgical tests have been performed under a standard procedure which have linked the mineralogy to metallurgical performance. This has allowed the creation and modelling of geometallurgical domains on a block-by-block basis to understand the recovery variation and metallurgical performance throughout the deposit. Understanding the spatial variability of Ni deportment in recoverable and non-recoverable phases through mineralogy is the key to understanding metallurgical performance, thus unlocking the value of the Dumont deposit and other large tonnage low-grade ultramafic nickel deposits.CITATION:Sciortino, M, Muinonen, J, Korczak, J and St-Jean, A, 2013. The accident repeater-40 you have one at your mine? Unless your company is vastly different from most coal companies, you will find that a small percentage (11-12%) of your employees will have a large percentage (47-50%) of your accidents. When you find out that this is a fact, what do you do? First, you establish a set of guidelines that can be used in identifying the ?accident repeater?. Next, you determine the type of action necessary to improve work habits and safety performance of the accident repeater. With these two steps in mind, objectives are developed for an ?accident repeater? program.

Detection and quantification of precious metals (Au, Pd, Pt, and Rh) in spinels and silicate minerals is important for establishing the maximum attainable recovery by sulphide flotation. To achieve this goal subpart per billion (ppb) detection limits are required plus the ability to quantify results. Existing quantitative microbeam techniques (EPMA, PIXE, SIMS, TOFLIMS) have limits of detection in the O. l-200ppm range. Time-of-flight resonance ionization mass spectrometry (TOF-RIMS) is a microbeam analytical technique that allows for the identification and quantification of atomic species in very small quantities. It utilizes a tunable laser source for resonant excitation and ionization of a particular element of interest and has some unique features: elemental selectivity, linear response over a large dynamic range and very high sensitivity. The analysis consist of three steps: (i) the solid sample is vaporized by laser ablation to form a plume containing neutral atoms, (ii) the neutral atoms of a specific atomic element in the plume are resonantly excited and ionized by another tunable laser, and finally (iii) the ions created are mass analyzed in a time-of-flight mass spectrometer. A TOF-RIMS mass spectrometer was developed at AMTEL for trace element analysis of Au, Pd, and Rh in minerals. The spectrometer was calibrated using homogeneous CANMET and NIST reference samples covering three orders of magnitude in concentration. Attained minimum detection limits (MDL=2cr of the background) are in the low ppb range.

Os Aços Inoxidáveis Duplex possuem uma estrutura constituída basicamente por ferrita e austenita na proporção aproximada de 50%. Este trabalho estudou a influência da temperatura de um tratamento térmico na morfologia e fração de ferrita e austenita no aço UNS S32304. Os tratamentos térmicos realizados consistiram no aquecimento das amostras, desde a temperatura ambiente até a temperatura de 1250°C, seguido de um resfriamento lento em um segundo forno estável em uma determinada temperatura. As amostras permaneceram neste segundo forno por um intervalo de tempo necessário para que suas temperaturas atingissem exatamente um valor desejado, sendo então imediatamente retiradas e resfriadas em água a 20°C para preservar a estrutura resultante do ciclo térmico aplicado. As amostras foram metalograficamente preparadas, atacadas e analisadas com o auxílio de um microscópio ótico. As frações de fases medidas por MO se aproximaram dos resultados obtidos por simulação utilizando o software Thermo-Calc. A morfologia das fases variou significativamente com a diminuição da temperatura de tratamento, uma vez que a austenita se mostrou mais fragmentada nas temperaturas mais baixas, porém o bandeamento não deixou de existir na estrutura.A transformação da ferrita em austenita se mostrou fortemente dependente do tempo.

Nevada is primarily known today for its nation-leading production of gold and silver. However, industrial mineral production continues to play an important role in providing construction materials to help make the state the fastest growing in the United States. Aggregate production in Nevada was about 20 million tons in 1991. Most of that was used in construction in the fast-growing Las Vegas area. The state leads the nation in the production of barite and mined magnesite and has significant production of lithium carbonate, diatomite and gypsum. Other industrial minerals produced in the state include specialty clays, silica, lime and dolomite and relatively small production in salt, perlite and dimension stone. Industrial minerals operations are subject to state and federal permitting requirements, especially in the areas of air and water quality and mined land reclamation. As in all segments of the mineral producing industries throughout the nation, the amount and complexity of regulations affecting industrial minerals has increased significantly in recent years. Nevada is no exception.
