The objective of this research was to investigate the interaction phenomena of rock and types of rock bolts to develop design principals for using grouted roof bolts. The investigation was to determine the effectiveness of grouted bolts in resisting lateral displacement and axial separation along fracture planes, and also to determine if grouted bolts eliminate the axial tensile stress near the anchor and the resulting rock fracture. The first year's effort involved defining the post-tensioning response of grouted bars and determining the amount of shear resistance generated by conventional and resin-grouted bolts. A finite-element analysis showed that if the rock and resin grout behave in an elastic manner, the post tensioning of a grouted bar will affect mine roof stability only if movement occurs near the collar. An experimental shear test program revealed that both conventional bolts and resin-grouted reinforcing bars significantly increase shear resistance along fracture or bedding plane when the average normal compressive stress on that plane is low (in the order of 25 psi) and when the bolt is oriented so that the shear displacement tends to lengthen the bolt. An increase in shear resistance is also noted at the higher normal pressure of 250 psi; however, the increase is small compared to the corresponding shear resistance without a bolt. Conventional bolts oriented so that they tended to loosen with shear displacement added no significant shear resistance.

Evaluation of incinerated sewage sludge as a secondary resource for aluminum, phosphorus, and minor constituents such as copper and zinc was initiated as part of the Bureau of Mines secondary resource program. The elemental composition of sludge ash for 14 plants in 11 U.S. cities was determined. Comparing industrialized cities with cities where most of the sewage is domestic, significant differences in heavy metal content were noted. Various parameters were investigated affecting the extraction of metals and phosphorus from a typical industrial city sludge ash and from a Palo Alto, Calif., sludge ash with a high precious metal content. Three extraction-recovery procedures for metals and phosphorus using sulfuric acid leaching, ion exchange, and various precipitation techniques were investigated. The last procedure developed was a combination approach using a three-stage countercurrent sulfuric acid leach that recovered most of the economic values from the sludge ash and also removed the leachable fraction of elements of environmental concern.

Raw water supply in the central Rocky Mountains often relies on trans-basin conveyance. Many of these older diversions incorporate high-elevation, miles-long tunnels driven over a century ago in hard rock. Tunnels were excavated using conventional drill-and-blast mining and weak ground was supported by timber sets and other various means. Over time, timbers rot and fail, rock quality deteriorates, and the timbers are gradually replaced by more timber, steel patches and braces, formed concrete, rock bolts, split sets, shotcrete, and other means which are commonly applied over existing support, thereby reducing tunnel cross sections, obscuring previous support systems, and rarely addressing the failing rock itself, leading to further deterioration of both the rock and the existing support. Traditional investigation techniques to assess compromised areas are often unfeasible due to access, depth, rubble and voids behind weight-bearing existing supports, confined space, poor invert conditions, poor ventilation, and flowing water. This presentation will discuss design procedures for assessing obscured ground conditions, assigning support classes which accommodate for unknowns, and implementing contractual means to address inevitable surprises or quantity overruns. Case studies include raw water supply tunnels in the Rocky Mountain region constructed between early to mid-20th century.

Since the late 19701s, the use of microcomputers in the minerals industry has grown to the point where today they can be found in virtually every plant within the industry. Their use in every aspect of instrumentation and control has increased the ease of operation and control of every phase of mineral processing. Their incorporation in sensors, transmitters, indicators, and controllers in addition to their use in distributed control and computer systems has provided operators with more timely accurate information than they have ever had before. This has led to an increase in the operator's effectiveness and an improvement in overall productivity. The ultimate aim of plant control is to maximize recovery in the mineral processing operation, and the microcomputer has spawned many tools that are now making this goal attainable. This paper discusses individual use of microcomputers in the areas previously mentioned as well as their collective use in overall control systems. The incorporation of local control systems in total plant control including the communication of information throughout all levels of plant management is also discussed. Finally the role the microcomputer is playing in today's plants is illustrated with numerous references to current examples.

The CSA Mine is located in Cobar, New South Wales and is operated by Glencore. Large scale underground production started from 1965, with zinc, lead, silver and copper extracted in the past. The current operations focus on copper, with a silver co-product.From 2014 to 2016, Cobar Management Pty Ltd (CMPL) undertook a major capital project to upgrade the primary ventilation system at the CSA Mine. This involved the development of ten raises using full-face raise boring from surface to a depth of 1450 m. The total length of the raises was approximately 2500 m. Geotechnical conditions were identified as a key project risk during the early planning stages of the project. Timely quantification of the geotechnical risks was required to minimise project delays and cost overruns. Geotechnical investigations were planned and conducted for each raise prior to pilot drilling and full-face back reaming.Nine of the ten raises had final wall camera and laser baseline surveys completed following full-face reaming. The surveys were conducted progressively, allowing ongoing back analysis and calibration of geotechnical evaluations as the project advanced.This paper presents the design and planning process of the raise bored excavations. It details the geotechnical investigation work undertaken to mitigate the geotechnical risks and the challenges and learnings from the project including the benefits of close collaboration between the parties involved.CITATION:Sidea, D and Brettell, T M, 2017. According to reports received by the Bureau of Mines, Department of the Interior, as of January 1, 1934, there were 591 completed refineries in the United States, an increase of 86 ever the total reported at the beginning of 1933 and the largest total ever recorded. It should be noted that the 1934 total, although large, probably does not include more than half of the "pot-still" plants of 1 barrel to 50 barrels daily capacity which have sprung up within the last 2 or 3 years and about which very little information is available. However, the combined operations of these snail refineries are of negligible importance as altogether they refine less crude than one plant of average size. Of the completed plants, 454 were operating on January 1, 1934 and 137 were shut down. In addition, 13 refineries were under construction on January 1, 1934. Compared with the previous year these data indicate a marked increase in the number of operating plants, little change in the number of inoperative plants, but a decline in' the number being built. The material gain in the number of operating plants resulted primarily from the construction off approximately 25 refineries, averaging about 100 barrels capacity in the Kooky Mountain district, as well as from the addition of about 20 plants in the East Texas field.

"Strategies to improve performance in mining production, maintenance and mineral processing operations have evolved over time from straightforward time studies of individual machine performance in the 1960s-1970s to more sophisticated and better focused statistical and financial tools that have emerged in the 1980s-1990s. These newer strategies fall under the broad descriptive category of operational excellence.Operational excellence is the term that embodies a number of performance evaluating strategies, the most popular and relevant to mining include the following:• Six sigma for addressing errors within mining or milling process and work standards.• Lean manufacturing to optimize organizational and operational performance through continuous improvement.There are other strategies that can be applied as well and this paper is not focused on a review of the pros and cons of any one strategy. However, the common threads in these strategies embody the expectation that expected results from these efforts can be quantified and that value will positively benefit the targeted work process, organizational unit, equipment deployment or time schedule when applied to it as part of continuous improvement efforts.The priority for proceeding with any one or more of these efforts is based on the calculated net value of the required resources to make the change versus the estimated value gained. The practice is identified as the value mapping process.This discussion summarizes the value mapping process methodology used at a mature uranium mine and mill in northern Canada to work through the myriad of potential improvement efforts available through the operational excellence process for continuous improvement."

Although the pressure to meet the heavy demand for lead still took precedence over new metallurgical developments in the field of roasting, smelting, and refining of lead in 1948 there nevertheless has been considerable activity in the experimental development of new processes and improvements as well as plans for the modernization of many plants both here and abroad. Increasing labor and material costs have stimulated the trend to greater mechanization, revamping of flow sheets, and construction of larger units wherever possible. Although there have been many serious labor stoppages in the United States, Mexico, and Europe, labor supply has improved in most plants even if it has fallen off in efficiency.

Worldwide BOF-based steel plants are faced with demanding environmental requests and rising energy costs. For cleaning of primary gases from the BOF the scrubbing technology is worldwide adapted. For wet-scrubbers there is a direct relation between pressure loss and achievable clean gas dust content. Subsequently main energy consumers within Gas Cleaning Plants are the driving fans. To evaluate actual performance and to identify optimization measures extensive field measurements at existing Gas Cleaning Plants were performed. The operational results from various BOF plants worldwide will be presented and benchmarked. As a conclusion, advanced control strategies for reduced energy consumption and lower environmental impact were developed and implemented.

Kazakhstan’s first commercial copper-leach solvent extraction-electrowinning plant, Central Asia Metals’ Kounrad project, was commissioned in April 2012. Exploiting low grade waste stockpiles produced during Soviet era open pit mining, a 10,000 tpa copper cathode plant was designed, constructed and commissioned within 18 months. Overcoming initial challenges with a workforce unfamiliar with the technology and with extensive periods of sub-zero conditions during winter the project has consistently met targets and produced high quality copper cathodes at cash costs of less than US$1/lb. Challenges encountered during the first two years of operation are described and future plans briefly discussed.

A week-long selective overburden handling dragline op ration was conducted at a strip mine near Colstrip, Montana. The objective of the demonstration was to hvdrologically isolate a saline overburden zone during placement in the spoil piles. The saline zone had concentrations considered inimical to successful reclamation and was potentially dangerous to future water quality in the spoils aquifer. The zone was identified after review of chemical data for overburden samples collected from the intense 60 m grid drilling pattern. The saline zone in the overburden was: 1) handled in a normal manner; 2) segregated and buried; and 3) segregated, buried, and covered with a relatively impermeable 1.0 m thick clay cap. The method used to formulate this demonstration, the demonstration itself, and the monitoring and evaluation techniques are described in this report. Observation wells were installed to monitor ground water in the overburden, Rosebud coal, and McKay coal. Data from these wells were, used to estimate post reclamation water levels and to evaluate recharge and water movement characteristics in the vicinity of the demonstrations. The inimical zone was successfully handled in a selective manner with a minimum of delays. Economic analysis indicated cost of these selective burial operations to be about 1.1 to 1.5 times the cost of the normal operation at this particular mine site. Long term monitoring will be required to evaluate the effectiveness of these handling techniques in hydrologically isolating undesirable overburden materials.

INTRODUCTION. This paper is a discussion of a part of the mineral wealth of the States of Oaxaca and Puebla, Mexico. It does not refer to the precious metals, some miles of which, in these States, are said to have been worked before the advent of the Spanish conquistadores in the sixteenth century, as my purpose is to invite attention to the exploration of deposits of coal and iron-ores in the Mixteca region. The prominence given to coal is warranted by the great effect of the scarcity of fuel upon the industrial development of Mexico. Under the progressive administration of President Porfirio Diaz, the Republic has made wonderful advances in the past three decades; and this progress would have been greater but for the limitations imposed by expensive fuel. In the spring of 1906 I was detailed by the Birkinbine Engineering Offices, of Philadelphia, to accompany A. B. Adams, of New York, in a reconnoissance of reported deposits of iron-ores in the State of Oaxaca. The result of this expedition was the formation, in 1907, of the Oaxaca Iron & Coal Co., of which Mr. Adams became, and has remained, President and General Manager, and I have spent the past three years as Chief Engineer of this company in Mexico, principally in western Oaxaca, where field-headquarters were established. Because the cutting and polishing of stones are parts of the work of the Bureau of Mines in its study of rocks and minerals and in the determination of specimens sent in for identification, it was decided that a circular covering the subject in a general way would be of practical interest. As several books and periodicals give details of the problems in cutting and polishing, this report will not duplicate their information more than necessary. In September 2009, Newmont began the commissioning of a 3 stage crushing and milling circuit at its Boddington Gold Operation in Western Australia. The Boddington ore has been recognized as one of the hardest and most abrasive ores treated to date and this played a pivotal role in the selection of crushing and HPGR technology for this operation as opposed to the more conventional SABC circuit. This paper will examine the scale up from laboratory to pilot plant and full scale operation of the crushing circuit. There have been many challenges to overcome in the first 18 months of operation; however, the HPGRs have in general met design expectations and performance is expected to improve further with ongoing design changes

Miami Copper Company began a block-caving operation in 1911 using a gravity mill to separate copper minerals from the Pinal Schist host rock. The tailing was deposited by the upstream method using perimeter launders and spigot valves in six canyons adjacent to the mill until 1932. In 1928 the larger and more distant Solitude tailing pile was developed which by 1932 was receiving all tailing except for upsets. In 1925 Miami Copper converted its gravity mill to flotation which began to produce higher sulfide copper recoveries.

Introduction So many minerals and mineral products are used in the glass industry that it would require an unduly long paper to deal adequately with all of them. Only those that go to make up the batch for the more common types of glass will be discussed here, and even with these only, the list is a lengthy one. It is true that for the body of the glass comparatively few materials are required-as silica sand, soda-ash, lime, and feldspar. The others are used mainly to colour or decolorize the glass, or to give it some other desired characteristic, such as high lustre, greater physical strength, or opalescence; but, although they may be present in very small quantities, they are just as in-dispensable to the glass industry as are the main constituents of the batch. Sand Sand is essentially quartz, the dioxide of silicon, Si02. Most glass contains from 71J to 75 per cent silica. Sand for use in the glass industry, or 'glass sand', is obtained both from deposits of unconsolidated material, commonly referred to as 'sand', and from solid rock-sandstone, quartz, or quartzite. For the manufacture of glass, the material must possess a high degree of purity, as noted below, so that, although sand is widespread in most parts of the world, and sandstone, quartz, and quartzite are not at all uncommon, it is only in certain places that suitable deposits are found. At the present time, most of the glass sand used in Canada is imported from France, Belgium, and the United States. The French material, from Fontainebleau, near Paris, is known the world over as a very high quality glass sand. That from Belgium is nearly as good and is lower is price.

Petrological and geochemical methods, the utility of which has long been established in the mining industry, are proving useful and cost-effective in elucidating the thermal evolution of active geothermal fields. In return, they yield insights into sulfide-silicate equilibria, mass and energy transfer in convecting hydrothermal systems, and the genesis of hydrothermal ore bodies. Within the Plio-Pleistocene sediments of the delta of the Colorado River, in the Salton Trough, several active geothermal systems are known. Temperatures vary from 100-365°C, at less than 2 km depth, and salinities vary from 3,000 to 280,000 ppm, total dissolved solids. The hydrothermal alteration causes marked induration of the sediments, producing greenschist facies metamorphic minerals, including hydrothermal ore minerals. Subsurface authigenic minerals show strong correlation with increasing temperature. A typical sequence in sandstones is (below 150°=C) montmoril-lonite-kaolinite, (above 180°C) chlorite + illite, (above 225°C) calc-alumino-silicates, (above 325°C) biotite. There is a transition from porosity-dominated\to fracture-dominated permeability in the hottest and deepest geothermal reservoirs. This regular series of minerals provides a practical tool during exploration drilling. From drill cuttings, we can make predictions on reservoir temperatures, useful in making decisions on well completion. Other types of geothermometry we have employed include light stable isotopes, fluid inclusions and vitrinite reflectance measurements. A combination of these techniques not only improves our temperature predictions, but together with fission tack annealing studies, permits us to model the dynamics of temperature change and fluid flow in these geothermal reservoirs.

This report is one of a series written by members of the Solid Fuels Mission to Germany describing wartime developments in the mining , preparation, and utilization of coal . The mission was organized early in 1945 under the auspices of the Technical Industrial Intelligence Committee , which cooperated with a counterpart British Committee . Engineers from other allied countries cooperated in some of the investigations . The Solid Fuels Mission operated under the direction of a steering committee headed by Dr. C. J. Potter , deputy solid fuels administrator . The personnel of the mission consisted of H. F. Yancey , in charge , J. W. Buch , Thomas Fraser , L. L. Newman , and L. D. Schmidt , of the Bureau of Mines ; H. H. Lowry , Director of the Coal Research Laboratory , Carnegie Institute of Technology ; H. J. Rose , vice president and director of research , Bituminous Coal Research, Inc .; and F. H. Reed , chief chemist , Illinois Geological Survey . Over 50 reports were written by the members of the Solid Fuels Mission . These and microfilms of supporting data obtained in the course of the investigations are on file at the Bureau of Mines , Washington , D. C. where they are available for public examination . The Office of the Publication Board in the Department of Commerce is prepared to furnish photolith copies , photostats , or microfilm reproductions of all declassified reports . A Bibliography of Scientific and Industrial Reports is issued weekly by the Department of Commerce , Office of the Publication Board , and is sold by the Superintendent of Documents , Government Printing Office , Washington 25 , D. Airborne rock dust poses serious long-term health complications to workers in the underground mining and civil environment where rock excavation is utilised. During drilling, airborne rock particles are immediately released into the breathable environment where additionally, the settled dust can be reintroduced into the air further down in production. The purpose of this study is to build a characterisation suite of dust particles such that underground operations can implement more appropriate dust suppression and mitigation techniques in accordance to pick wear. Therefore, concrete is cut to create a preliminary dust characterisation baseline, where future cutting tests will be performed on limestone and sandstone rocks.In this study, three conical pick wears (new, moderately worn, and fully worn picks) are used to generate dust from a concrete block and characteristics are statistically compared between the dusts. Airborne respirable particles are collected during cutting and deposited fine material, orparticles left on the surface of the block, are collected after cutting. The dusts are then analysed through standardised methods, field emission scanning electron microscope image capture with image analyses, and laser diffraction methods. Findings reveal that the worn pick generated thehighest concentration of respirable dust, all picks generated dust containing quartz, the three picks generally generated respirable dusts with similar particle shapes (in terms of roundness, roughness, and aspect ratio), and the worn pick generated the largest deposited fine material particles.
