Available literature on the effect of re-entrainment on overall airborne dust concentration in mine airways or the fundamental mechanisms of coal dust re-entrainment in mine atmosphere is scant. Therefore, as part of the Respirable Dust Center's ongoing research, a three part study was envisaged: study of the re-entrainment phenomena of anthracite and bituminous coal dust particles in a wind tunnel under the influence of varying air velocities; study of the same in the Lake Lynn Laboratory Mine of the USBM with both airflow and walking by personnel causing re-entrainment; and mathematical modeling and computer simulation of the re-entrainment phenomenon. In this paper, results from the re-entrainment studies in the wind tunnel and the Lake Lynn Laboratory Mine are presented. Further, the results from the wind tunnel studies are compared with the results from in-mine studies conducted at the Lake Lynn Laboratory Mine of the USBM. Comparing the results from the two studies it was observed that increasing air velocity increased the rate of re-entrainment, but increased time of exposure decreased the airborne dust concentration. Compared to same size particles, a mixture of sizes created more airborne dust concentration when re-entrained. It was also observed that contribution of airborne dust concentration due to airflow was negligible compared to the contribution due to walking.

"Over the last five years, the authors have compiled a database of Short Encapsulation Pull Test (SEPT) evaluations from Interior Basin (Basin) coal mines. Typically, SEPT data are analyzed to obtain peak load carrying capacity per unit length of resin encapsulation designated as the ""Grip Factor,"" or GF. In a previous paper, ""An Analysis of Short Encapsulation Bolt Pull Test (SEPT) Data From Interior Basin Coal Mines,"" authors analyzed tangent value of the load-displacement curve as Anchorage Stiffness at 50% (AS-50) of the peak load, or GF value, to assess reinforcement potential of an installed bolt system. This paper attempts to correlate the secant AS VALUES (of SEPT on 6 ft (1.8 m) long installed bolts at a lower load of about four tons from several different mines in the Basin with their MSHA-approved primary support requirements. Since the current regulatory environment requires plan changes dynamically to ensure that roof falls are minimized, the authors hypothesize that the practiced roof control plan must meet the minimum requirement of adequately supporting immediate roof strata. The analyses are based on 181 SEPT studies performed by Minova professionals. Analyses indicate a macrolevel correlation for both roof support density and roof support cost that may have the potential to be used by mine operators to compare their performance with other mines in the area. Limitations of the analyses include ignoring mining depth, mining height and required secondary supports as part of the requirements for a roof control plan. The authors recommend additional analyses to develop this concept further to develop guidelines that can be confidently used by coal companies.INTRODUCTIONPartially- and fully-grouted bolts are extensively used in coal mines for roof support as part of MSHA-approved roof control plans. Since grouted bolts have a larger area of contact with the rock, they can develop much greater anchorage capacity than conventional expansion shell (point-anchored) bolts. Load transfer characteristics and interaction mechanics between steel rebar, grout and rock mass around the bolt hole for grouted bolts are generally assessed in the laboratory or field though short-encapsulation pull tests (SEPT), which have been extensively researched by Aziz and Jalalifar (2005), Aziz (2004a), Serbousek and Signer (1987), Signer (1990), and Mark et al. (2002), among others. In a SEPT, about 12 in. (30 cm) of bolt length is typically encapsulated in resin and a pull test is performed to collect load-displacement data prior to failure and, in some cases, post-failure. A typical load-displacement data set for a bolt is shown in Figure 1. SEPT characteristics are designated by peak load carrying capacity, or grip factor, which is the peak load carrying capacity per unit length of resin encapsulation. SEPT is routinely used to assess anchorage performance characteristics of different lithologies overlying a coal seam to identify type of bolt, bolt diameter, length and spacing across and along an excavation. Anchorage stiffness, or AS, at any load may also be calculated as the tangent or secant value of the slope of the load displacement curve at a particular load level. Anchorage Stiffness characteristics of bolts from SEPT data have typically not been considered in any depth until recently (Chugh et al., 2014; Chugh et al., 2015)."

The recent discoveries of hydrothermal activity in the ocean off New Zealand have created interest in the business community in the commercial possibilities of mining associated marine polymetallic sulfides. This interest is more so, as this hydrothermal activity is in much shallower depths, between 120 ? 1800 meters, than the typical 2400m in other parts of the oceans. Mining for other ocean deposits around NZ, such as phosphate nodules and off-shore deposits from gold bearing river beds is also attracting interest. The question is: - how can these deposits be mined without spending the enormous sums of money required for specialized mining technology? There are no dedicated off- the-shelf systems designed exclusively for underwater mining. Such systems require expensive development and manufacturing processes and then, are most probably designed for only one specific purpose. The costs involved place such equipment beyond the means of smaller entrepreneurial groups and only the big companies have the resources required. However, large companies are normally reluctant to take the risk of investing large sums of money into deep ocean projects. Australia and New Zealand, until recent times, have been somewhat isolated from European and North American technical resources - especially in the field of underwater technology. Over the past century such isolation has often led to solving problems with what has become locally known as ? ?the number 8 gauge wire method?. This approach to problem solving entails using whatever is available to get the job done and keep costs down. In the old days with NZ technology being mainly based around farming, a piece of No. 8 gauge fencing wire, although not designed for the purpose, was often used to fix various problems ? hence the term.

The use of cemented rock fill (CRF) for support of open stope walls has increased in the Australian underground mines operations over the last five years due in part to its low capital cost. In open stoping the exposed CRF masses require adequate strength and stiffness, in order to resist the forces and to limit the displacement associated with movements in the rock mass surrounding the excavations. The CRF material preparation often involves the use of large particles, either from crushed rock or from development mining waste sometimes up to 1 m in diameter. However, the use of waste rock, which has a poorly graded particle size distribution may not achieve the required minimum target strength due to segregation and large air voids within the fill mass. This paper describes the optimisation of CRF strength by either crushing the waste rock or the addition of sand to the mix. Both methods increase the level of fines in the mix design. Cylindrical samples having 400 mm diameter and 800 mm heights were prepared for uniaxial compressive strength (UCS) testing. The UCS test was determined using the Western Australian School of Mines (WASM) large-scale static test frame. The laboratory results were compared with a database of large-scale CRF strength mixed without sand from a number of mine sites around Australia. The comparison shows a significant strength development in the CRF mixing with addition of sand for a given cement percentage. Due to the higher strengths achieved by the addition of sand and the crushing of the waste material these CRF types require less cement to achieve the same strength. THE rate of elimination of carbon largely controls the time required to make a heat of steel by the basic open-hearth process and to an important degree determines the cost of refining. Practical experience has led to the generally accepted belief that the use of slags relatively high in iron oxide, such as are required to bring about rapid refining, leads to a certain sacrifice of quality in the product. As a consequence, a compromise must be made between the exceedingly slow rate of carbon drop which would correspond to the ideal case and the rapid rate which would best satisfy the condition of minimum cost. An increase in rate of refining necessarily implies an increase in the concentration of iron oxide dissolved in the metal. However, even for the infinitely slow rate that corresponds to slag-metal equilibrium, the metal would contain a certain definite concentration of dissolved iron oxide. It is a matter of great practical importance, therefore, to determine the quantitative relation between the minimum or equilibrium concentration of iron oxide in the metal and the higher concentrations which must actually obtain in practice. The present paper is devoted to the development of certain equations, derived from the established laws of physical chemistry, which will enable this relation between rate of refining and the degree of oxidation of the metal bath to be computed from operating data. No attempt is made to exhaust the possibilities of this general method of treatment. In considering rate of refining, attention is mainly confined to rate of carbon elimination. However, the equations are of a more general nature and their application may readily be extended. The results of the preliminary calculations given herein indicate that increased rate of refining may have a decided effect in increasing the concentration of iron oxide dissolved in the metal. The uncertainty. which attaches to the calculated value for this relationship arises in part from probable errors in experimental data on which the calculations are based, and in part from the lack of complete or favorably disposed information on basic open-hearth practice.

En los últimos 20 años la operación minera en Antamina ha profundizado su tajo, el stripping ratio y la distancia de acarreo de desmonte, se han seguido incrementando para mantener la producción metálica. Tal como ocurre en las todas operaciones mineras de tajo abierto, se espera en los próximos años un incremento sustancial de la cantidad de desmonte a remover conforme se avance las siguientes extensiones de vida. En adición a esta situación, los recientes compromisos globales de reducción de emisiones de carbono exigen reducir progresivamente hasta eliminar el 100% la emisión de carbono, opuesto a lo requerido para seguir operando con métodos convencionales. Estos dos factores afectan la sustentabilidad en el largo plazo en todas las empresas mineras maduras como en el futuro de Antamina.

O presente trabalho apresenta um forno para a produção de ferro gusa por redução carbotérmica estimulada por micro-ondas de minério de ferro, na forma de pelotas autoredutoras. O forno de redução com potência regulável de até 15 kW de micro-ondas de 2.45 GHz foi especialmente projetado e construído para este processo. A estrutura do forno é em aço inoxidável e utiliza três geradores de micro-ondas focados para o centro de um aplicador cilíndrico. Com esta configuração conseguiu-se produzir um campo eletromagnético de alta densidade energética. As cargas de pelotas auto-redutoras, com massas em torno de 90 g e 30 g foram reduzidas em um cadinho de carbeto de silício. A potência de micro-ondas irradiada foi de 6 kW. A montagem do forno dispõe de uma balança elétrica adaptada para suportar o cadinho de redução. O presente forno dispõe de controle e medida da potência fornecida e refletida, permitindo medir a energia de micro-ondas efetivamente aplicada à carga. Esta característica permite realizar balanços de massa e de energia além de determinar a evolução da taxa de reação através da medida contínua da massa das pelotas sob redução, ao longo do tempo de processamento. Obtiveram-se curvas cinéticas de redução carbotérmica de minério de ferro incentivada por micro-ondas e de seu consumo de energia durante o processo.

Mining geology has a threefold objective: to guide prospecting for new ore, to evaluate known orebodies as development risks, and to supply the detailed knowledge of ore structures necessary for more economical extraction. The role of geology in exploration is well established. This article will deal solely with orebody evaluation and the application of geology to development and mining problems as practiced by St. Joseph Lead Co. in the southeast Missouri district, which for many years has supplied approximately 30 pct of U. S. lead production. The primary concern of the present discussion is geology in the district, not geology of the district. The southeast Missouri district, locally called the Lead Belt, includes parts of St. Francois, Madison, and Washington counties. The first recorded mining was about 1720 at Mine La Motte in Madison County on surface showings of lead ore. Later discoveries near Bonne Terre, twenty-five miles to the north, led to extensive prospecting and underground mining. To date the district has yielded well over 8 million tons of pig lead, valued at more than $1 billion. By far the greater part of the lead production has come from an area of 50 sq miles, centering Fig. 1-Central portion of southeast Missouri on the city of Flat River, as shown in Fig. 1.

"On October 11, 2000, an estimated 306 million gallons of water and coal waste slurry drained from an impoundment in Martin County, eastern Kentucky into an adjacent underground mine. Approximately 230 million gallons of the water and slurry discharged from two underground mine portals and affected over 75 miles of streams in Kentucky and West Virginia. In response to this and several other similar events, the U.S. Office of Surface Mining Reclamation and Enforcement (OSMRE) commissioned an oversight study that evaluates how well state and federal regulatory programs established under the Surface Mining Control and Enforcement Act are ensuring that impoundment operators are minimizing the potential for impoundment-basin breakthroughs. The study focuses on slurry impoundments constructed in the hollows of Appalachia where numerous coal seams and steep topography combine to result in a large number of mined seams intersecting and underlying impounding facilities. Factors under consideration include: (1) full accounting of all mineable coal seams intersecting and underlying the impoundment; (2) identification and accurate location of underground mines close enough to the impoundment to potentially affect its stability; (3) assessment of the stability of coal barriers between the impoundment basin and adjacent mines, and stability of roof rock and pillars in mines subjacent to the structure; (4) determination of the flowability of the impounded slurry when expanding or undermining the facility are being considered; and (5) measures undertaken to reduce breakthrough potential when necessary. The oversight study began in 2012 after program-evaluation criteria were defined in an OSMRE technical position paper. The study is scheduled to be completed in 2017. BACKGROUND The Surface Mining Control and Reclamation Act (SMCRA) authorizes the disposal of coal mine waste by constructing a coarse coal mine waste embankment across a valley and pumping the fine coal mine waste (slurry) into the resulting basin (Figure 1). A concern shared by many engineers, geologists, and mine inspectors familiar with coal mine waste slurry impoundments is related to the common occurrence of underground mine workings adjacent to or beneath the impoundment: the potential for slurry “breakthroughs” into mine works and subsequent breakouts into the surface waterways (Figure 2). On October 11, 2000 a combination of coal refuse slurry and water from the Big Branch impoundment in Martin County, Kentucky broke through into an underground mine and subsequently discharged into the receiving streams. The location of the point of breakthrough, pathways of slurry/water flow within the mine workings, and two points where the liquid exited the mine are shown in Figure 3. An estimated 306 million gallons of water and coal refuse slurry drained from the impoundment into the adjacent underground mine. Approximately 230 million gallons subsequently discharged from the underground mine at two portals."

Post-blast assessment techniques using off-site data which includes location, seismograph and photographic data were discussed during the Blaster’s Weekend at this year’s ISEE Conference. Blast and property locations with commonly available GPS units allow for the spatial relationships surrounding the blasting to be documented. When distances are coupled with the charge weight per delay, the scaled distance can be calculated to any structure for either compliance with the rules, or to project limitations. When blasting seismograph data is obtained, the scaled distances are then able to be plotted against ground and air vibration levels for post-blast assessment purposes.

An often overlooked factor in the analysis of mine layouts and schedules is technical operating flexibility (or tactical flexibility), mainly due to its nebulous nature. By glossing over technical operating flexibility the resultant mine layouts and schedules maybe suboptimal. The need to incorporate technical operating flexibility into the analysis and comparison of mine layouts and schedules is increasing in importance. The nature of technical operating flexibility is illustrated, previous work on valuing of operating flexibility reviewed, and a proposal made on how technical operating flexibility can be quantified for tabular reef mines by using a platinum reef deposit as a case study. Once technical operating flexibility has been quantified it becomes possible to explore its incorporation into the analysis of mine layouts and schedules and subsequent optimization processes. This paper is a revised version of a paper presented in the Proceedings of the Second International Platinum Conference, ?Platinum Surges Ahead? in 2006. The work described in this paper is part of a current PhD study at the University of the Witwatersrand. The purpose of this U.S. Bureau of Mines effort was to determine if ground movement caused by mining-induced subsidence is directly transferred to a structure and, if so, how that transfer takes place. Four concrete block walls with foundations were constructed and monitored over an active longwall panel. Three of the walls were located perpendicular to the direction of mining in zones where maximum inclination, maximum tension, and maximum curvature were predicted to occur. The fourth wall was constructed along the centerline of the panel, parallel to the direction of mining. All of the walls and the surrounding ground surface were instrumented with conventional survey monitoring points and extensometer stations to observe the vertical and horizontal movements. The fourth wall instrumentation also included continuously recording tiltmeters. The results of this investigation indicate that these simple structures respond to subsidence in a similar manner as the ground surface. This suggests that once the transfer mechanism is more fully defined, prediction models can be developed to accurately estimate the effect of mining on surface structures.

During the last three years the use of ethylene glycol dinitrate4 (E.G.D.) as at low-freeze (L.F.) agent in place of nitropolyglycerin has become common in the manufacture of explosives of the dynamite type. The usual proportion of D. G. D. in the explosive "oil" is 25 per cent; the remainder, 75 per cant, is regular nitroglycerin. These proportions were probably selected as a continuation of the practice of 25 per cent nitropolyglycerin and 75 per cent regular nitroglycerin.

High-chromium vanadium-titanium magnetite has not been exploited and made full use of on a large scale so far due to the immature utilisation technology and the reality that the utilisation efficiency of valuable metals still urgently needs to be improved. In the present paper, the isothermal reduction kinetics and mechanism of high-chromium vanadium-titanium pellets were studied at 800–1100°C. The mineral composition transformation of pellets before and after reduction was analysed by means of X-ray diffraction (XRD), and the microstructures were examined by scanning electron microscope (SEM) equipped with energy dispersive X-ray (EDX) to reveal the elemental distributions. The effect of reduction temperature on the volumetric swelling degree and cold crushing strength was also studied. It was found that reduction temperature has a large effect on the reduction rate of pellets, and the increase in reduction rate is more obvious in the range 1000–1100°C than 800–1000°C. The volumetric swelling degree of pellets increased with increasing reduction temperature, while the cold crushing strength decreased. The transformation of mineral species can be expressed as Fe2O3 ? Fe3O4 ? FeO ? Fe, Fe2O3·3TiO2 ? Fe3O4· (2FeO·TiO2 ) ? 2FeO· TiO2 ? FeO·TiO2, (Fe0.6Cr0.4)2O3 ? FeO· Cr2O3 ? Cr2O3 , and Fe2O3· VO/V2O3 ? VO. The apparent activation energy of the reduction reaction was calculated to be 44.3 kJ/mol, and the reduction rate is controlled by the combined effect of interfacial chemical reaction and gas diffusion through the porous product layer. The rate controlling steps were further studied by calculating the resistance percentages. In underground mines worldwide, a large number of short and small diameter slot holes need to be excavated. Herrenknecht has developed and built a new boxholeboring machine based on the well-proven Microtunnellingpipe jacking technology. The innovative Boxhole Boring Machine significantly increases work safety and requires only minimal drift dimensions. The high and consistent production rates that can be achieved result in enormous time savings compared to conventional drill and blast excavations. GENERAL ASPECTS In gold, copper and ore mines ventilation shafts are required to prepare block caving operations, to discharge ore onto the transportation level and to provide evacuation shafts. A high level of occupational safety and efficiency is the main objective when drilling vertical or inclined shafts. The faster and more safely shafts can be constructed, the earlier the actual production in the mine can start or be continued. Mechanized or conventional methods (drill&blast) that have been used to date only partially meet the required safety standards and fail to provide the requested production rates.

"Discrete Element Method (DEM) has become a standard tool to simulate grinding mills in order to gain information about load behaviour, power drawn, etc. However, parameters necessary to run a simulation are not always readily available. For example, the coefficient of restitution used in DEM simulation from the literature ranges from 0.1 to 0.9 due to lack of accurate values. The lack of correct input parameters results in the fact that some simulation parameters are adjusted to match the simulation prediction with the experimental results. It is inappropriate to tune one single parameter arbitrarily in order to fit the prediction with experimental results. The correct value of parameters for DEM simulation should be established, and rigorous validation on simulation results by DEM needs to be done.The objectives of the ongoing project are to measure the coefficient of restitution at conditions analogous to grinding practice. Equipment has been built to measure the coefficient of restitution. A typical case of impact test showing the vertical position of a ball as a function of time is presented in Figure 1. The coefficient of restitution between steel ball of different sizes and the targets including steel liner (e = 0.91), mild steel block (e = 0.57) and rubber liner (e = 0.7) have been measured. The coefficient of restitution reduces to 0.38-0.52 when there is a layer of coal particles (1-2 mm) on the steel liner. The effects of ball size, drop height on coefficient of restitution are investigated. Then a DEM code is developed of several contact models to simulate the impact process. This code can reveal details on velocities (translational and rotational) and forces (normal and tangential) during the brief impact interval. Figure 2 is a comparison of the rebound rotational velocity between experiment and prediction by different models. The results can be used as DEM input and to assess contact models."

As part of the development of a novel flash ironmaking process at the University of Utah, a labscale flash reactor was used to produce iron directly from iron oxide concentrate. This work tested the feasibility of the novel flash ironmaking process using the partial combustion of hydrogen as fuel and reductant. In this flash reactor, the energy required to reduce concentrate particles was obtained from the internal combustion of hydrogen and oxygen with complementary energy from electrical resistance heating to compensate for the heat loss. After the reaction shaft was electrically pre-heated, hydrogen and oxygen streams produced a non-premixed flame inside the reaction shaft. Various conditions such as flame configuration, flame power, positions of concentrate feeding ports, excess hydrogen amount and residence time were tested. More than 90% reduction of magnetite or hematite was achieved at temperatures as low as 1175 oC with < 100% excess hydrogen in <10 s of residence time.

"The Mining Information Technology User Group considers information to be a strategic enabler to improved business performance in mining. This ad hoc group has been meeting since 2000 to share knowledge and leverage their efforts in effectively using IT in mining. In this paper, core issues to mining IT are reviewed, along with initiatives to engage industry professionals and decision-makers in the potential for improved use of information in their operations. Relevance of IT to Canadian MiningMining operations always drive to improve their performance, and so far they have succeeded by using different technologies. While economies of scale have come in fragmentation and material handling, and energy usage has improved through conservation and design of integrated mineral processing plants, these systems have the net result of tightening operational constraints, through reduced excess capacity. There are higher opportunity costs of lost production when integrated, large-scale systems are operating in a sub-optimal way.The problem is that it is profoundly difficult to run a mine in an optimal way. Optimization requires a defined objective function (e.g., profit), which is hard to pose, let alone solve, because so many inter-related aspects of an operation affect the bottom line. Even for a small, well-defined process state, it is difficult to measure all the pertinent information with sufficient accuracy to ensure that the system is performing well in real time.The art of mining remains making good decisions with uncertainty: in the orebody delineation; in the allocation of resources; in the efficiency of the operation; in the reliability of components and systems; and in responding to the downstream market. As well, individual decision-makers need to know how their decisions affect other processes and systems, so that improvements in one part of an operation do not result in such degraded performance in the rest of the plant that overall profitability goes down."

El presente texto revisa el panorama actual de las rocas y minerales industriales en el Perú a través de los estudios de INGEMMET. Dentro de este estudio, las rocas minerales e industriales son recursos que representan un interesante potencial geológico en la geología peruana, constituyéndose en la principal fuente de materias primas e insumos para el abastecimiento de los principales subsectores económicos. Las rocas y minerales con mayor espectativa de inversión son: las rocas carbonatadas, sílice y arenas silíceas, fosfatos, yeso, rocas ornamentales como travertino, piedra laja, granitos, ente otros.
