PHASE relations in three isothermal sections (l000°, 1100°, 1200°C) of the system Ag-Fe-Pd have been determined as part of a program to develop improved crucible materials for containing low-melting iron silicates at low oxygen potentials. The following experimental method was used: Two- to 3- g samples of each of forty different alloys within the system Ag-Fe-Pd were made up from metals of 99.9 pct purity. The mixed metal powders were contained in a 1-cc crucible of dense recrystal-lized alumina and heated in a protective atmosphere (90 vol pct A, 10 vol pct H2), first to complete melting for approximately 30 min and subsequently at the desired equilibration temperature (1000°, 1100°, or 1200°C) for approximately 24 hr. The samples were then quenched rapidly to room temperature and examined metallographically as well as by X-ray techniques. Unit cell dimensions were compared with standards obtained by study of one-phase alloys of known compositions. The results are summarized in diagrams (a), (b), and (c) shown in Fig. 1. Heavy solid curves outline areas comprising compositions of mixtures consisting of the phases labeled for each area. Mixtures in which liquid is the only condensed phase present are confined to very narrow areas adjacent to the Ag-Pd join at high silver contents. An enlarged, distorted picture of the phase relations prevailing in these areas is shown in the upper-left circular insert. Electric arc furnace dust generated during the production of steels is regarded as hazardous waste because of the presence of leachable elements such as Cr, Pb, Cd .... Different processes are available according to the management policy chosen by the steelmaker: disposal. recycle and/or recovery. The feasibility of an hydrometallurgical Zn recovery process on fumes generated during the pyrometallurgical treatment of EAF dust has been investigated. The recovery of metallic iron, chromium and nickel as molten metal provides fumes very rich in zinc oxide ( 63.1% ) and poor in zinc ferrite. This secondary dust is still an hazardous waste and represents the raw material for the recovery of Zn and Pb. The waste material is first leached in 1.5 M sulphuric acid at 30°C to provide a Zn, Fe and Mn rich aqueous solution and a Pb and Ca sulphate rich sludge. The iron is eliminated by precipitation because is harmful to the following electrowinning process. The ftltered and purified leached solution is acidified in order to obtain good electrowinning conditions. A pure cathodic deposit of zinc is then produced in an electrolytic cell at laboratory scale.

Several aspects of coal mine safety-ground system operation are studied. Evaluations of two sophisticated ground-wire monitors are presented, along with a detailed report of development work on a modular ground-wire monitor. A portion of the report covers stray current flow in the safety-ground system, analyzing in detail conditions surrounding the generation of both dc and ac ground wire current. Considerable detail is provided concerning studies of mine ground beds. Additional progress is reported in the development of a. continuous ground-bed monitor, and new techniques are developed for the design of ground beds and their resistance measurement. New methods of accurately measuring electrical parameters of finite layered conducting structures are also reported. The effects of stray currents in ground beds is included. Touch-and step-potentials associated with mining equipment are analyzed, and methods are presented for determining earth voltage gradients around structures contacting earth. Instrumentation to determine gradients easily is suggested. Finally, an extensive effort is described dealing with lightning transients on open-pit coal mine ground systems. The nature of the transients, their expected frequency of occurrence, and the ways in which they damage equipment are analyzed in detail.

"The mine telephone has been perfected to such an extent that it is giving satisfaction in most mines were the wiring is well insulated. Very often the telephone cannot be depended upon on account of falls of rock, grounding due to worn insulation or extreme dampness. In the event of a disaster it frequently happens that the mine telephone system is put out of commission by the agency that causes the disaster, at the time when it is most urgently needed. On this account the mining industry is interested in any kind of telephone system that can be counted upon in an emergency. Many requests have been received by the Bureau of Mines to devise means of utilizing wireless methods for this purpose.The results of some preliminary experiments conducted by the writers at the Bureau of Mines experimental mine at Bruceton, Pennsylvania, in the ordinary sending and receiving of radio waves through earth strata are described below. The experiments were made in cooperation with the Westinghouse Electric end Manufacturing Co., which assigned to this work three of its radio engineers, C. A, Boddie, E. C. Douglas, and F. D. Fessler,The preliminary experiments consisted first in receiving signals from without the mine by means of a receiver located inside the mina, and second, both sending and receiving messages underground through the strata. It was found that with a receiving instrument set at a point 100 feet underground, signals from KDKA station, of the Westinghouse Electric and Manufacturing Co. East Pittsburgh, Pa., could be heard distinctly. Station KDKA is at a distance of about 18 miles from the experimental mine. About 50 feet from the receiving station used in this test was a 6-inch bore-hole from the surface, lined with iron pipe and containing electric light wires which extended therefrom through-out the mine. The presence of these wires evidently assisted greatly in the reception, for when the receiving set was carried to another point in the mine removed from wires and tracks the signals were barely audible through 50 feet of cover. The fact that signals were detected, however, even though faintly, is sufficient evidence of transmission through the ground to encourage further experimenting.In sending waves underground the Westinghouse 20-watt B.T. model T.F. transmitter was used in such a manner as to send out continuous waves of 200 to 300 meters length."

Questions regarding possible adverse health effects from exposure to zeolites arose when the inhabitants of two villages in Turkey were found to have high incidences of mesothelioma, a disease generally identified with exposure to asbestos. No asbestos deposits are known in the area, but some fibrous zeolites have been found. Further investigations have resulted in conflicting opinions as to whether fibrous zeolites are related to the high incidence of mesothelioma in Turkey. The U.S. Department of the Interior, Bureau of Mines examined the habits of domestic zeolites by scanning and transmission electron microscopy. Only erionite and mordenite particles possessed acicular to fibrous habits. With the exception of a rarely occurring woolly erionite sample, the fibrous zeolites were not dimensionally equivalent to asbestos.

"Electric pulse fragmentation (EPF) is an innovative technology that uses high-voltage pulsed power (HVPP) for the selective comminution of the treated material. Highly energetic electrical pulses are used to fracture rocks at mineral grain boundaries, resulting in extensive micro-cracks and/or complete fragmentation of the processed particles depending on the applied energy. In this study, the EPF technology was applied to a low-grade schist ore containing cassiterite, in order to investigate its influence on the selectivity of the fragmentation. The impact of EPF on subsequent comminution steps was studied by combining either the EPF technology or jaw crushing (used here as conventional crushing) with subsequent impact crushing. The results confirmed the potential of the EPF treatment for a selective fragmentation of the schist ore. This gave the potential advantages of reducing the total energy consumption in the comminution circuit and of improving the recovery of cassiterite during concentration processes. INTRODUCTION The rise in the world consumption of metals combined with the depletion of most of the high-grade ore reserves leads to an increased need to process ores of lower grade, with a more complex mineralogy. To recover the valuable minerals contained in such ores, fine grinding is required, but this process has high energy requirements and leads to the production of a large amounts of fines, which can impede the performance of later concentration processes such as gravimetric separation and flotation. Addressing this issue is a major challenge for the mining industry. Selective comminution methods have the potential to significantly contribute to the profitable exploitation of these low-grade ores by generating cracks specifically at mineral grain boundaries rather than randomly as in a conventional mechanical comminution system. This allows the liberation of valuable components from the feed material without overgrinding, i.e. this prevents unnecessary size reduction of already liberated grains, which leads to a reduction in production of fines and in energy consumption. In addition, rock not fragmented by the process are usually weakened by the dense fracture network generated, which increases grindability of the rock (Wang et al., 2011)."

The RockWorks EarthApps represent a free collection of 74 geology-related programs that read data from a built-in datasheet and create diagrams within Google Earth. EarthApps also includes programs that extract data from Google Earth. The programs that create diagrams include: point mapping (e.g. borehole locations), proportionally scaled icons (e.g. geochemistry), and strike & dip symbols. Line mapping utilities include; polylines, parabolas and pipelines. Polygon mapping programs include; thematic mapping (e.g. geology), mining claims, and public land survey sections. Image overlay capabilities include; draping (e.g. geologic maps) and time-based animations. Vertical image display capabilities are centered on either midpoints (e.g. drill-hole logs) or stretched between endpoints (e.g. cross-sections). The Flyover programs create virtual tours for site presentations. The cell-mapping includes a variety of algorithms (e.g. geochemical and geophysical contouring). Survey programs convert and export survey data to Google Earth as points and polygons. Programs that extract data from Google Earth include; points, lineations, polylines, and polygons. The RockWorks/EarthApps collection is developed by RockWare Incorporated based in Golden, Colorado.

(San Francisco Meeting, September, 1915). THE Belmont mill at Tonopah, Nev., was designed and constructed by the Belmont staff. Ground was broken in August, 1911, and milling operation started July 25, 1912. The metallurgical flow sheet, and the machinery adapted to carrying out operations in accordance with this plan, were decided upon from experience gained in the treatment of Belmont mine ores at the old Belmont mill at Millers, Nev. The detail drawings were made by the-engineering staff of the Tonopah-Belmont Development Co., under the supervision of Otto Wartenweiler, who also .had direct charge of the construction, consulting with the General Superintendent of the company, Frederick Bradshaw, and the writer.

"INTRODUCTION The Ahles iron mine, also known as the Pequest mine, in Warren County, N. J., was operated continuously for 15 years and was still in ore when it closed in 1916.Tie property was examined by an engineer of the Bureau of Mines in March 1943. 3/ This examination led to an investigation of the deposits by the Bureau by diamond drilling two holes under the old workings to determine whether the extends downward.This report describes the work done at the Ahles mine by the Bureau and presents the data obtained.ACKNOWLEDGMENTSIn its program of investigation of mineral deposits, the Bureau of Mines has as its primary objective the more effective utilization of our mineral resources to the end that they make the greatest possible contribution to national security and economy. I. INTRODUCTION. DURING the last twenty years or so the chemical investigation of rocks has made great advances, and it is now generally recognized that a knowledge of the chemical composition is as essential as that of the texture or mineral composition-if not more so-for the proper classification of rocks and study of their origin and relationships. Rock-analyses have vastly increased in numbers and, what is of greater importance, in quality. New and improved methods permit of greater accuracy than was possible in the early days, and the list of chemical constituents frequently determined has risen from the seven or eight of the greater part of the nineteenth century to twenty or more. Indeed, rock-analyses with determinations of so many constituents are now commonly made by the chemists of the United States and Australia, while in Germany, Great Britain, France, and Italy the rarer constituents are determined more frequently than formerly. As a consequence of this modern, accurate work, it has been discovered that some elements which were formerly supposed to be rare are of wide-spread occurrence and are often present in considerable amount. The fact is further being developed that the elements tend to show certain relations of occurrence or abundance in connection with each other. This is a fact which is applicable to the rarer elements, and which also finds a broad geological and petrological expression in the recognition of petrographic provinces. We are beginning to obtain some definite, though as yet rudimentary, knowledge of the distribution of the elements among igneous rocks. Some of the results along these lines obtained by study of the vast accumulation of analytical data now available are well known to petrologists, while others do not seem to be so gener-

Precipitated calcium carbonate is used as a filler and coating material in the manufacturing of paper because of its high brightness and light scattering characteristics. However, beneficiated calcite has similar potential, given the fact that the industrial specifications are already achieved. For paper industries, the requirement is that the desired product should be pure and have a brightness of 93 to 95 percent. A very-high-grade calcite deposit of around 92 percent is located in the north of Norway, which is used as the raw material for ground calcium carbonate (GCC) feed for the paper industries. There is a substantial amount of calcite resource, which has pyrite and pyrrhotite as major impurities. These sulfides, even when present in minor concentrations, impart color to the end product (paper). Removing these minerals is estimated to increase utilization of the deposit by 10  percent, which represents several million tonnes of calcite marble. Due to the requirement for environmentally friendly reagents and chemicals by the mineral industry, fatty di-amines are being tested for pyrite and pyrrhotite flotation. The interaction mechanism of diamine with the main components of the ore were studied and optimum conditions for removal of sulfide impurities are outlined.

An air-sparged hydrocyclone (ASH) mobile system was evaluated for continuous stripping and recovery of cyanide (the AVR process) from process water at a gold plant site. The ASH unit performed exceptionally well as an absorber. HCN was removed from the gas phase in a single one second pass with an efficiency exceeding 99%. HCN concentration in the discharged gas phase was lower than 10 ppm, which provided for a safe working environment. The stripping efficiency, controlled by the Henry’s Law constant, exceeded 40% in one pass.

A large-scale development in exploration and production of uranium ores in the Czech Republic was done in the 2nd half of the 20th century. Many uranium deposits were discovered in the territory of the Czech Republic. Over a period of 50 years approximately, 110 000 tons of uranium in concentrate were produced. Different mining methods were developed and used. One of the most considerable deposits in the Czech Republic is the site Hamr na Jezere ? Straz pod Ralskem where both mining methods ? the underground mining and the acidic in-situ leaching ? were used. The extensive production of uranium led to widespread environmental impacts and contamination of groundwaters. Over the period of ?chemical? leaching of uranium (ca. 32 years), a total of more than 4 million tons of sulphuric acid and other chemicals have been injected into the ground. Most of the products (approximately 99.5 %) of the acids reactions with the rocks are located in the Cenomanian aquifer. The contamination of Cenomanian aquifer covers an area larger than 27 km2. The influenced volume of groundwater is more than 380 million m3. The total amount of dissolved SO4 2- is about 3.6 million tons. Approximately 0.5 % of the contamination is located in the Turonian aquifer. After 1990, a large-scale environmental program was established and the Czech government decided to liquidate the ISL Mine and start the remediation in 1996. The remediation consists of contaminated groundwater pumping, removing of the contaminants and discharging or reinjection of treated water. The objectives of the remedial activities are the followings : to restore the aquifer to a condition guaranteeing continuing usability of Turonian water of Northern Bohemia Cretaceous, to decommission boreholes and surface installations and to incorporate the surface of leaching fields into the ecosystems taking into account regional systems of ecological stability and urban plans. Nowadays four main remedial technological installations for reaching of these aims are used - the ?Station for Acid Solutions Liquidation No. One?, the ?Mother liquor reprocessing? station, the ?Neutralization and Decontamination Station NDS 6? and the ?Neutralization and Decontamination Station NDS 10?. Total capacity of this complex is sufficient to reach the target values of remedial parameters in 2037. The remediation action consists of: pumping of residual solution to the surface, separating uranium from the solution and reprocessing contaminants into commercially usable or ecologically storable products. It is expected that the amount of withdrawn contaminants will vary from 80 000 to 120 000 tons per year. Total costs of all remediation activities are expected to be in excess of 1.5 billion EUR.

I submit charts of two amalgamation-barrel charges, Figs. 1 and 2, which are self-explanatory. The flow sheet of the high-grade and the mercury extraction plants is shown in Fig. 3.

The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), through an informal partnership with industry, labor, and the Mine Safety and Health Administration, has developed and tested a new type of instrument known as the personal dust monitor (PDM). The dust monitor is an integral part of the cap lamp that a miner normally carries to work and provides continuous information about the amount of respirable coal mine dust in the breathing zone of that individual. Testing was conducted on 25 prototype instruments in the laboratory to verify the instruments’ accuracy as received from the manufacturer and after a period of underground use. The laboratory testing verified previous work; there is a 95% confidence that the individual PDM measurements were within ±25% of reference measurements. In-mine testing determined the precision, durability, and miner acceptance. Data from the mines showed a field precision of 0.078% relative standard deviation for the PDM and 0.052% for the recognized standard—the coal mine dust personal sampler unit. The PDM had about 90% availability for collecting valid information in over 8,000 hr of underground use. Anecdotal comments by miners indicated that they found the PDM more convenient to wear for sampling than currently used instruments because of the integration of the sampler into the normally worn cap lamp. The means of the instruments’ pre- and postmine accuracy verification test values were statistically equivalent. Additional data were collected to measure the equivalency of the PDM to the U.K. Mining Research Establishment sampler, as required by U.S. law. However, analysis of the data was more complex than originally anticipated because the variance with increasing concentration required use of a more sophisticated statistical model. Explanation of and results from this work will be the subject of a second publication. Under the broad range of test conditions covered in this work, the PDM functioned as well as the current sampler in terms of availability for use, accuracy, precision, and miner acceptance.

In 1986, United States' barite production fell 48.9%, consumption - sold or used by grinding plants - was off 47.3%, and imports were down 63.8%. Meanwhile, world mine production decreased 29.6%, according to the US Bureau of Mines. However, value of US-produced barite FOB mine increased 46.51%, according to USBM figures. The declared value CIF US port of all imported unground barite decreased from $41.94/t ($46.23 per st) to $39.02/t ($43.01 per st). Nevada continued to be the leading US producer of barite with 69% of the total. It is followed by Georgia, Missouri, Tennessee, and California. The USBM estimates that 65% of the barite mined was used as a weighting agent in drilling fluids. The remaining 35% was used in the production of barium chemicals and as a filler. Most of the production from Missouri, Georgia, and Tennessee was used in the non-oilfield sector. This sector made up a larger percentage of the US produced barite in 1987 than it did in 1986, increasing the overall value per ton of barite. Barite consumption was at its lowest since 1963. It is estimated that 80% of the barite was consumed in the drilling fluid market. The remaining 20% was used in barium chemicals, glass, and as filler in plastics and paper. The decline of barite used in drilling fluid followed the decline in the average number rotary rigs operating - 964 versus 1968 in 1985. This was the lowest average number of rotary rigs operating since 1971. The non-oilfield market was up 5.3% in 1986. This increase can be attributed to the increased use as a filler in plastics. Imports of crude barite, though down nearly two-thirds, still made up 65% of the barite consumed in the US. China was the leading exporter to the US with 58%, followed by India, 15.4%; Morocco, 11%; Thailand, 5.4%; Mexico, 4.6%; Chile, 3.9%; and Ireland, 1.7%. Less than 1% of the imported ore was used in the nonoilfield sector. Imports of ground barite dropped from 64.4 kt (71,000 st) to 19.8 kt (21,800 st) in 1986. Of this amount, 14.1 kt (15,500 st) were used in drilling fluids in 1986 and the remainder for non-oilfield use. During 1986, more of the grinding plants supplying the drilling fluid market were closed. Dresser Magcobar and IMCO Services, a Halliburton company, formed M-I Drilling Fluids Co. Mine production in the US will probably decrease in 1987 due to the lower cost of imported ore. No significant change is expected in the drilling fluid market. The average number of operating rotary rigs is estimated at 950 in 1987 versus 965 in 1986. The nondrilling fluid markets (chemicals, glass, and filler) will follow the overall US economy. Bauxite and alumina R. J. Anderson, Ohio State University US bauxite production in 1986 dropped to a pre-World War II level, continuing a decline that began a decade ago. 1986 production totaled 450 kt (496,000 st), compared to 674 kt (743,000 st) in 1985. World production of bauxite also decreased in 1986. This reflected the soft market in alumina, aluminum, and related products. Total mine production worldwide came to 79 Mt (87 million st), down from 85 Mt (94 million st) in 1985. For the sixteenth consecutive year, Australian production of bauxite led all other sources. No other country approached the 28 Mt (31 million st) mined in Australia in 1986, despite a 4.4-Mt (4.9-million st) drop in its output from 1985. Other major producers in 1986 were: Guinea 11 Mt (12 million st), Brazil, 6.5 Mt (7 million st), Jamaica, 6.5 Mt (7 million st), and Suriname 2.8 Mt (3 million st). Despite weakness in world demand for bauxite, Venezuela, heretofore an alumina producer, is now pushing development of a new mining venture near the western border of the state of Bolivar. Plans call for barging bauxite down the Orinoco River to the Ciudad Guyana alumina plant, a distance of 650 km (400 miles).

In 2019 the Chinese Ministry of Ecology and Environment issued guidelines promoting the implementation of ultra-low emissions in the iron and steelmaking industry. These guidelines aim to drive improvements in air quality through the reduction of particulate matter (PM), sulfur dioxide (SO2) and nitrogen oxide (NOx). Secondly, it also represents an initial means to commence decarbonisation of the industry. The ultra-low emissions guidelines propose that well over 80 per cent of China’s production capacity will achieve these targets by 2025. In response, many sintering operations have implemented numerous improvements to the process that result in significant efficiency gains. Of note is the adoption of deep bed sintering where, with some modifications to equipment, the sintering bed depth is increased resulting in sizable reductions of SO2 and NOx emissions. This paper will also provide an overview of the requirements to introduce deep-bed sintering into an operation and highlight test work completed which quantifies the resultant reduction in emissions.
