"Lonmin Platinum has experienced several cases of large-scale hangingwall instabilities during the extraction of the Upper Group 2 Chromitite Layer (UG2) at a number of the Marikana operations along the Western Limb of the Bushveld Complex. These instabilities were all attributed to the presence and interaction of prominent geological features and highlighted that assumptions made in the design of the stable pillars and stable span were potentially overly simplistic in these areas. Investigations into the various case studies over the past ten years have resulted in the identification and classification of the rock mass characteristics of the geological structures causing the instabilities.In order to get a better understanding of these instabilities, it is important to understand the structural geology in general, and the sequence of events that led to the formation of the Bushveld Complex in particular. The tectonics involved in the formation of the various layers around the economic mineralized layers has been investigated, and the influence of these tectonic events on the stability of the UG2 stopes hypothesized.Following this investigation, the behaviour of the various layers in the hangingwall of the UG2 is better understood. This paper presents a description of the ground conditions being experienced in the underground stoping environment, the possible source of the associated structures and the resultant behavioural mechanism of these structures causing the rock mass instabilities."

"Bioheap pretreatment of sulfidic refractory gold ore prior to cyanide leaching is a promising new technology, especially for low-grade ores that cannot afford to be oxidized by pressure leaching or roasting. When an ore contains both refractory and non-refractory (oxidized) gold, an economic decision must be made whether, or not, to pretreat before cyanide leaching. This choice is more complex than the familiar ore/waste cut-off grade decision. Pretreatment usually increases recovery but delays receiving revenue. Based on choosing the processing route that maximizes the present value of the ore, an equation is developed that computes a ""critical cyanide leachable gold grade"" for determining whether pretreating will be profitable. If the ore's actual cyanide leachable grade, without pretreatment, is above this ""critical grade,"" it will not pay to pretreat. The waste/ore cut-off grade, pretreatment yield (leachable grade after pretreatment), total gold grade, pretreatment operating cost and the project's financial discount rate are parameters in the equation. Results of example calculations are provided. This equation can be used for mine development planning and, when bioheap pretreatment is an available option, for daily operating decisions on individual ore blocks.IntroductionOres that are refractory because of sulfide mineral encapsulation of microscopic gold are becoming important. These ores must be pretreated to oxidize the sulfides to liberate the gold prior to cyanide leaching. The conventional pretreatment process technologies are pressure leaching with oxygen and two-stage fluid bed roasting. However, low-grade refractory ores cannot afford the high operating costs of these processes. And, small mines with limited reserves cannot justify the high capital costs of these processes."

"INTRODUCTION The Wah Wah mine was examined 3/ by the Bureau of Mines in September, and a project was started in November 1942. Assistance was given by the Federal Geological Survey in formulating proposals and plans, and two geoloists were assigned to map the surface and underground workings in October 1942.HISTORYThe Pine Grove mining district was organized in 1S73, but no work was done there until it was reorganized in 1879, after which it is reported that a little ore was shipped. The Wah Wah Mining Co. was incorporated September 2, 1937. Prior to that time, predecessor organizations had spent approximately $122,000 on the property now held by this company. The board of directors of the Wah Wah Mining Co. approved expenditure of $47,652.14 from September 1937 to June 1942 for development. This work was confined to the Tasso shaft and connecting levels. Shipments in 1939 amounted to 925.789 dry tons with a gross value of $12,477.83. This ore contained 20,130 pounds lead, 1,390 pounds copper, 7,434 ounces silver, and 65.09 ounces gold. The mine was idle from July 1941 to November 1942, when, the Bureau initiated a project to unwater the Tasso shaft and proceed with the exploratory work as outlined in the War Minerals Report."

Effective October 1, 1958, President Eisenhower imposed, by Presidential Order, fixed import quotas on lead metal and lead concentrates and also on zinc metal and zinc concentrates. He did this in response to an escape clause case under the Trade Agreements Act filed by many of the large and small lead and zinc mining companies in September 1957. It is the purpose of this paper to give the experience of the lead-zinc industry under this order during its first two years and some observations on what might have come about under different conditions of U.S.A. consumption. Before considering these various experiences and observations, it seems wise to first outline briefly the basic problem which prompted such an order. Under the Tariff Act of 1930, the duty on pig lead was fixed at 2-l/8¢ per pound and slab zinc at 1-3/4e; per pound. The ores, concentrates and closely related products of these metals carried closely related duty rates. The Trade Agreements Act of 1934 and succeeding similar acts had given the, President the power to lower these and other duties. As a result-of various negotiations with foreign nations, by 1951 these duties had been lowered to their present day rates of 1-1/16 per pound on' pig lead and 7/10o, per pound on slab zinc. Related ores, concentrates and semi-fabricated forms of the metals received commensurate treatment. Under these acts, the Tariff Commission has the right to recommend to the President duty increases, specific quotas or both if find that imports have injured the affected industry. The study concentrates on the effects exerted by microstructure, deformation history and uniaxial stress conditions (temperature, stress state, strain rate) on the mechanical properties offerritic TRIP-aided steels for automotive applications. In low-alloyed TRIP-steels it is quite difficult to separate the effect of the austenite to martensite phase transformation from the influence of the ferritic matrix contributing to the yield stress and uniform elongation. Investigation of transformation kinetics of retained austenite as a function of the deformation temperature show that using the parameter k to characterize the retained austenite stability allows to identify regious of different temperature sensitivity separated by a transition temperature of 10±5°C. The observed low strain-rate sensitivity of the flow stress is an intrinsic property of the ferritix matrix and points to defomtation governed by slip. The ultimate tensile strength is much stronger affected by temperature than the yield stress. The influence of the temperature on the elongation is complex, because of the heating of the specimens by 60-l20°C at moderate and high strain rates. The increase of the total strain can be understood in terms of thermal softening of the ferrite. On the other hand, the steep increase of the stress during dynamic testing is an effect of accommodated elastic and plastic strains in the matrix. The strain- hardening exponent is dependent on the conditions imposed during testing. The martensite transfomtation rate is lower and the critical stress for martensite nucleation is much higher under compression compared to tensile loading. In secondary tensile tests, the yield stress increases steeply, and the ultimate tensile strength and the total elongation depend linearly on the amount of pre-straining. The results confirm that in the range of 8=10-4 s-l the TRIP-effect governs room temperature plasticity. There were no significant changes in the mineral industries of the smaller Caribbean Islands during 1980. Imported petroleum requirements continued to erode economic gains that may have occurred in other sectors. Some relief may be forthcoming as more qualified Caribbean countries take advantage of Trinidad and Tobago's petroleum product financing program (see Trinidad and Tobago). There were no crude oil discoveries in these areas during 1980, although some geophysical testing around the British Virgin Islands and Antigua war underway. In March 1980, the Government of Antigua sold a 75% interest in the 16,000-barrel- per-day West Indies Oil Co. refinery to the Swiss Intermaritime Bank and Intermaritime Management Services for $6 million. The new refinery company is called the National Petroleum Co. Shutdown since 1976, it was originally planned for the refinery to reopen in 1980, but refurbishing has proved to be more extensive than anticipated. The reopening is now expected in 1981.

The solubility of rare earth (RE) salts in aqueous solutions depends on many factors including the type of cations and anions in solution, their concentrations, temperature and the type of solid precipitated. Experiments were conducted using anhydrous La2(SO4)3 and Ce2(SO4)3⋅8H2O as solids and lanthanum(III) perchlorate prepared by dissolving La2O3 in HClO4 solutions as RE-sources. Solutions of H2SO4, H3PO4 and their mixtures in the presence or absence of Na+, Ca2+, Fe(III) or Al(III) as perchlorates served as test solutions. Saturated solutions and precipitated solids were assayed and characterized using standard techniques to show that the La(III) and Ce(III) ions precipitate as hydrated sulphates, phosphates or double salts with sodium, depending upon the solution composition. The change in solubility of RE-salts with solution composition and temperature is the result of the composite effect of changes in solubility products (pKSP) of salts, pKa of acids and other equilibrium constants for ion-association.

The development of larger size flotation machines, which started in the 1950's and 19601s, is still proceeding. The largest mechanical flotation machines available today have unit volumes in the range of 38 to 42 m3 (1,350 to 1,500 cft). In fact, the motivating forces of increasing capital and energy costs and decreasing ore grades, which created the need for large flotation cells, not only still exist, but are becoming more critical. This paper reports the development of an improved mechanism for these large flotation machines. The starting point in the development of a new mechanism was the identification of design and performance features of existing machines where improvements were desirable. The result of this work was a mechanism which is an improvement over existing designs. This new design is characterized by an efficient overhung stator and a vortex profile rotor. The overhung design of the stator removes unnecessary and undesirable baffling in the lowest parts of the tank, while maintaining a quiescent froth layer. This results in lower power consumption and better pulp circulation and solids suspension. The vortex profile rotor acts as an efficient pump, with higher pulp recirculation rates as evidenced by the increased air dispersion capabilities, good solids suspension, and low power consumption.

"Low carbon ferritic steel bars with ultra-fine grain structure was developed through a warm rolling for the first time by the present authors. They show better low temperature toughness than conventionally hot-rolled plates. Hence, the brittle fracture surfaces in Charpy tests were examined in terms of the effective grain size of fracture, compared with those of conventional QT steels. The ductile-to-brittle transition temperatures were in good accordance with those for the QT steels if referred to the effective grain size of fracture: · However, the size was a few times that of the ferrite grain. This means the grain refining is not yet fully utilized from the viewpoint of low temperature toughness. The anisotropy of· the impact properties and the annealing effect of highly dislocated structure on the toughness are also discussed in the present paper.IntroductionFor structural materials, both high strength and good toughness are required. Well-known approaches for obtaining better toughness for steels are as follows:1) Grain refining2) Addition of Ni3) Thin plate effect by cracking parallel to the rolling direction prior to crack propagation4) Contribution of metastable austenite.Among them, only the grain refining can raise the strength and improve the toughness. And it is well known that the finer the ferrite grain size, the lower the ductile-to-brittle transition temperature. For example, in the case of 0.11 carbon steel, the transition temperature decreases linearly to in d 1/2 [1 ]. However, these have been told in the regime of coarse grain size that is larger than 10 µm in diameter. There ~as .been no study dealing with the low temperature toughness in the regime of ultra-fine grain size with a diameter in the order of 1 µm."

IN Bolivia, mining is still the principal economic activity, as it was before and during the Spanish Colonial period. Tin, tungsten, antimony, copper, lead, zinc, gold, silver, sulphur, and a little bismuth are produced. The Andes mountains are divided into two main ranges in Bolivia; the Western range marks the border with Chile and the Eastern range forms the backbone of the country; in the North it drops rather abruptly eastward, to the plains of the Beni, whereas in the South it splits and is separated from the Chaco flatlands by a series of folded mountain ranges. In general the mineral deposits are found within the Eastern range or in the hills that rise from the high plateau between the ranges - really parts of the Eastern range partly submerged by recent sediments. The mineral belt is thus over 500 miles long and about 100 miles wide and includes most of the principal centers of population and the most important means of communication. The region is mountainous and the roads are bad; furthermore labor is a serious problem, for the land is poor and the agricultural population is never far from hunger. The floating supply of miners is limited and soon exhausted in any emergency like the present.

Water has been commonly used as a collecting medium in many instruments employed in the sampling of dusty atmospheres in mines** add industrial plants, and for this purpose has much to recommend it, particularly the following factors:1.,Water is a very efficient dust collector.2.,Distilled water of great purity may be readily obtained at slight expense. The analytical error introduced by the extremely small amount of foreign matter in carefully distilled water is very small,3.,Water is a very convenient medium with which to work as all the analytical operations of diluting, aliquoting, and filtering are readily and speedily carried out. Water has therefore been used extensively in such instruments as the Palmer apparatus, the Greenburg-Smith impinger, and the dust collector recently described by Drinker, Thompson, and Fitchet. The Bureau of Mines has conducted investigations in many metal-mining districts of the country, determining of dust the nature and amount of dust present in working places, its effect the health of workers, and what precautions may be taken to decrease the hazard of exposure to dangerous dusts. The Bureau is therefore interested in any factor that affects the accuracy of dust sampling.

Construction and design of drilled shaft foundations in hard pinnacle limestone requires flexibility from all parties involved due to the variability of the subsurface conditions. This article describes some strategies which have been found useful in the Birmingham, Alabama area. The importance of well trained and experienced field personnel in these conditions is noted. It is also vital that engineers understand the construction challenges so as to provide both quality assurance and cost effectiveness in design and in the specifications.

DC Water’s Clean Rivers (DCCR) program involves the construction of approximately 29 km (18 mi) of CSO tunnels in Potomac Group soils in the Washington DC area. Soils include an upper predominantly over-consolidated fine grained plastic material facies (P/A) and lower predominantly coarsegrained facies (PTX). As earth pressure balance (EPB) tunnel boring machines (TBMs) are mainly used in such soils, the correct approach to soil conditioning can make a considerable difference in TBM performance. Soil conditioning laboratory tests are often completed during the planning phase prior to TBM excavation to develop a baseline for soil conditioning, reduce risks, minimize costs, and improve performance. However, only a few basic tests are standardized to date, and conditioning regimes are fine-tuned during the mining phase. The paper illustrates the effort carried out to identify the correct soil conditioning regime for both PA and PTX facies to improve TBM overall performance and reduce ground movement during the excavation of the Northeast Boundary Tunnel (NEBT) in Washington DC.

The hydraulic air compressor (HAC) is driven only by water, held up by a dam, to create relatively low head (typically 10-20 metres), such that the developed hydropower is used to cause flow in openings deeper underground. Air is entrained in the water at the inlet to the sub-surface openings (an air to water volume ratio of 1:1 is reported to be optimal) and is compressed as it is carried along by the deepening water flow. At depth, and with lower water velocities arising from larger cross sectional area tunnels, air bubbles separate out of the water flow and are collected in a receiver space above the flowing water. Water, free of air, then passes back up a return shaft (up-pipe) and rejoins the river or stream flow. In principle, an HAC can produce any pressure and flow rate required, given large enough shafts and enough water supply with head sufficient to overcome frictional resistance in the sub-surface tunnels. Practically, as air solubility in water increases with pressure, HAC installations with depths greater than 100 metres may lead to higher rates of compressed air loss, without special separation measures. A modern HAC application for mine refrigeration and cooling is presented.

Electrical ad thermal-conductivity measurements have been made on titanium and 6 titanium alloys. The following expression was derived for calculating thermal conductivity from electrical conductivity: K = 0.626 s T x 10-8 + 0.00497 where K = thermal conductivity, cal sec-1 cm-2 cm0C-1 s = electrical conductivity, ohm-]cm-1 T = temperature, deg Kelvin This expression gives calculated thermal conductivities that are not in error by more than 10 pct from the experimental values for A-55 titanium and the 6 alloys measured; namely, A-110AT, C-110M, C-130AM, Ti-6A1-4V, Ti-140A, and Ti-155A, which are representative of the presently available commercial a and a-ß titanium alloys. THERMAL conduction in a gas, liquid, or amorphous solid is accomplished by energy diffusion from molecule to molecule, a relatively slow process. For this reason, such materials have a low thermal conductivity. When a material is crystalline, there is in addition a heat transfer by a vibratory motion of the crystal lattice. It is the contribution of this lattice conduction that makes a crystal a much better conductor than a gas, liquid, or amorphous solid. Lattice conduction, however, does not account for the relatively enormous thermal conductivity of a metal. This is explained by the freedom of movement of valence electrons. These valence electrons drift in a metal in a direction toward a drop in electrical potential and, to a lesser degree, in the direction of a temperature drop in the metal. Since both the electrical and thermal conductivities of a metal depend upon the presence of free electrons, there should be some relatively simple relation between the two. Wiedemann and Franz in 1653 first discovered an approximate empirical relation between the electrical and thermal conductivities of metals at the same temperature. This ratio varies appreciably with temperature, and Lorenz later showed that by adding a temperature factor to the Wiedemann-Franz ratio the value of K/(s T) is constant, where K is the thermal conductivity, a the electrical conductivity, and T the absolute temperature. This Lorenz constant shows a greater variation for alloys than it does for pure metals, the ratio increasing slightly as the proportion of alloying elements increases. It has been found that a closer correlation between electrical conductivity and thermal conductivity can be obtained by means of an equation of the form K - A s T + B [1] where A and B are constants. In this equation the term AsT is the contribution of electronic conduction and B is the contribution of lattice conduction to the total thermal conductivity. EXPERIMENTAL MEASUREMENTS Electrical-resistivity and thermal-conductivity measurements on titanium and 6 titanium alloys serve as the basis for determining an equation of the K = AsT + B type for titanium alloys. Specimens—Table I shows nominal compositions of the 7 metals on which electrical and thermal conductivities were measured. The electrical and thermal-conductivity specimens for each alloy were taken from stock of the same heat and usually from adjacent sections of the same bar. Spontaneous combustion hazard assessment from an environmental impact perspective is not well understood and is seldom given due consideration in environmental impact statements. In surface mining operations, self-heating, leading to spontaneous combustion may occur when rock units containing reactive metal sulphides and organic carbon are disturbed by mining operations and exposed to the atmosphere. When these rocks are present self-heating will occur in situations where the rate of heat generated from oxidation reactions exceeds the rate of heat lost to the surroundings. The processes and mechanisms that lead to spontaneous combustion events are varied and generally complex. To effectively manage spontaneous combustion in surface mining operations, it is necessary to characterise the spontaneous combustion propensity of the geological materials involved. Until recently there has been no testing procedure for assessing the propensity of waste rock to spontaneously combust that has been adopted by industry. However, new developments in adiabatic test methods have proven successful in determining the self-heating behaviour of coal (Beamish and Theiler, 2015) and coal containing reactive pyrite (Beamish and Theiler, 2017). These adiabatic test methods have now been modified to assess the incubation behaviour of waste rocks and can be used for their spontaneous combustion characterisation in advance of mining (Beamish and Theiler, 2016). The new method provides a practical means to establish the likelihood of developing a spontaneous combustion event for the specific site conditions. This paper presents examples of the use of a cost effective first pass filter for assessing spontaneous combustion potential of waste rock based on geochemical data from four surface mines. Metallic magnesium is mostly used in lightweight alloys in order to decrease fuel consumption in automotive applications. Several different production processes are currently used worldwide, and the magnesium production scenario is changing rapidly, with Chinese production increasingly dominating the world market. For the purpose of this paper, a novel approach to Life Cycle Assessment was applied, in which Material Flow Accounting and energy-based methods (Embodied Energy, Exergy and Emergy Analyses) are integrated and complemented, with a detailed description of the environmental hazards associated with emissions from all the different processes.

Resource nationalism is essentially mandatory government intervention in natural resources businesses by political or economic means in order to benefit the nation and the people. It is attacking the mining industry more and more rampantly by all kinds of means since the twenty-first century. Poor countries who count on a resource-led economic growth usually find themselves trapped into “resource curse”. The harmfulness of resource nationalism for investors is that one event can quickly escalate and lead to a chain of events which make projects commercially unavailable. In spite of historical and theoretical social investigations in the causes of resource nationalism, rare studies engaged in quantification of dominant parameters of it. The objective of this study is to find significant factors that dominate the occurrence of resource nationalism for important metal and energy resources producing countries and quantify their marginal effects. The study applies binary choice logit model for panel data using pooled method. One feature of the research is that binary data set of occurrence of resource nationalism are sorted out by authors referencing U.S. Geological Survey’s reports. The results indicate that high-technology export (% manufactured export), ores and metals exports (% merchandise exports), rule of law (world governance indicator), trade (% GDP), and natural resource rent except forest (% GDP ) dominant the occurrence of resource nationalism for high and upper middle income group countries; government effectiveness (world governance indicator), policy perception index (The Fraser Institute), high-technology export (% manufactured export), and mineral rent (% GDP) dominant the occurrence of resource nationalism for lower middle and low income countries. According to our model, probability of occurrence of resource nationalism in 90 countries are predicted. Top 10 risky countries in 2012 are estimated to be North Korea, India, Honduras, Indonesia, Kazakhstan, Burkina Faso, Mongolia, Cuba, Bolivia, and Peru. The study is a primary trial of researching on resource nationalism and provides some insights for theoretical building and simulation on the issue.
