En 2010 se identificó un peligro potencial en la pared Norte del Tajo Chaquicocha, donde existía fallas pre-existentes, catch bench reducidos (subestándar) y bloques colgados que presuponían condiciones de mala voladura de control. Por ello, se planteó la modificación del diseño Final del Tajo Chaquicocha, ya que la continuidad de estos malos resultados arriesgaba el minado de los Bancos inferiores. En ese sentido, el objetivo del presente texto estriba en lograr voladuras masivas, sin afectar la estabilidad de las paredes del Tajo Chaquicocha, así como tener beneficios económicos en la reducción de tiempo de minado por cada banco, y en la productividad (Dig Rate) de los equipos de carguío.

"A partial desulfurization roasting process has been tested on a typical copper-zinc sulfide concentrate in a Nichols Herreshoff monohearth pilot furnace whereby the su!fµr is partially removed and iron is to a certain degree preferentially oxidized. The phase changes that occur in the particles during selective roasting at 650°C and 800°C over a range of residence times were investigated by the use of chemical analysis, optical microscopy, X-ray diffraction and electron microprobe analyses. The purpose of this work was to get an insight into the mineral assemblages formed by controlled oxidation roasting and to evaluate if this non traditional approach could be afterwards used to recover zinc, copper and iron by a physical separation method. IntroductionThere has been considerable interest over the years in improving extraction and processing procedures for recovering non ferrous metals especially from polymetallic ores containing copper, lead, zinc and iron sulfides with very fine intergrown phases. Complex sulfide ores, which represent considerable reserves and resources in copper, lead and zinc, as well as precious metals and sulfur, are difficult to treat by conventional physical processes, leading to impure concentrates at low metal recovery. Some methods that can be used to treat such ores were described by G. Barbery (1). Various metallurgical routes generally combining pyro- and hydrometallurgical methods have been explored to develop new processes to recover the metals from zinc-bearing sulfidic ores and concentrates (2, 3, 4). The feasibility of partitioning complex sulfide minerals to simpler phases in order to improve selective extraction of mineral constituents has also been investigated (5)."

THE paper on "Specific Efficiency of the Blast Furnace" by Richard Franchot, which was pub-lished in the September issue of MINING AND METALLURGY, was presented for discussion at the Pitts-burgh meeting. The session opened with a discussion among S. P. Kinney, Mr. Franchot, and J. N. Reese as to the methods and results in sampling for cyanides in the blast furnace. This is covered in detail in writ-ten discussion below. T. T. Read objected to the use of the term specific efficiency as likely to be confusing. The blast furnace has to perform the function of reducing Fe, 03 to Fe as well as that of fusing the metal and, since the reduc-tion of Fe, 0? involves a CO equilibrium, it seems mis-leading to calculate efficiency on the basis of burning the , all carbon to CO? since it is not possible. Mr. Franchot replied that he used the term in the sense defined by Richards in his "Metallurgical Calculations;" but a subsequent search failed to reveal the term in Richards, who says (page 245, 1st edition): The practical conclusion is that a blast furnace generates in itself not much over 40 per cent of the calorific power of the fuel used, and rejects nearly 60 per cent; by using part of the waste gases to heat the blast, however, some of this rejected heat, to an amount representing net 5 to 10 per cent of the calorific power of the fuel used, is returned to and injected bodily into the furnace, thus rendering available for the purpose of running the furnace about 50 per cent of the calorific power of the fuel as a maximum. The efficiency with which the furnace applies this 50 per cent usefully to the objects of the reducing and smelting is another question for investigation.

Researchers at NIOSH’s Pittsburgh Mining Research Division (PMRD) performed comparative testing of six different water sprays at pressures ranging from 689 kPa (100 psi) to 6,895 kPa (1,000 psi) in a 14.5-m3 (512-ft3) confined dust chamber. Testing was conducted to determine the effect of various pressures on each spray’s respirable coal dust knockdown ability. It is known that higher water pressures are typically preferred for lowering airborne dust concentrations, but it was important to determine at what pressure range the dust knockdown ability of each spray plateaus or reaches its minimum dust concentration. Results from this testing showed that several sprays saw up to 100% decrease in dust concentrations during the five-minute water spray testing period, with some occurring well below the maximum 6,895 kPa (1,000 psi) spray pressure.

The ease of ignition and violence of explosion of Utah coal dusts, together with the large volumes of methane given off in some of the mines of the State, made it imperative to abandon obsolete equipment and obviously hazardous practices for up-to-date equipment and safer methods of mining if reasonable progress wore to be attained in fire and explosion prevention. Although much can still be done to improve safety conditions in Utah coal mines, considerable progress has been made in the past 10 years. The fundamentals of such progress include increased use of permissible electrical equipment in gassy mines, closed lights, rock-dusting, more liberal use of water at the face, butter ventilation, permissible explosives fired electrically both within and without the mine, partial inhibition of blasting while the shift is in the mine, 100-percent first-aid training, increased supervision and inspection, and mass safety meetings.

"Efficient utilization of CO2 can help to decrease global warming. Methane reforming using carbon dioxide has been of interest for many years, but recently that interest has experienced a rapid increase for both environmental and commercial reasons. The use of CO2 provides a source of clean oxygen, which eliminates the need for costly oxygen separation plants. The product of dry reforming is useful syn-gas, which can be used to generate electrical power in a SOFC or in the production of synthetic fuels (hydrocarbons and alcohols). Hexaaluminate catalysts prepared at NETL may represent a product that can be utilized for the conversion of CO2 to syn-gas. In this work, transition metals dispersed in barium hexaaluminate have shown to be promising new catalysts for dry methane reforming. In this investigation, a series of BaNixAl12-yO19-d catalysts with varying Ni content were prepared by co-precipitation followed by calcination at 1400°C. CO2 reduction by dry methane reforming was carried out to determine catalyst performance as a function of temperature and carbon formation was also quantified after the reforming tests. Results of catalysts characterization, dispersion and surface area, were correlated to catalytic performance.IntroductionEfficient utilization of CO2 can help to decrease global warming. The dry reforming reaction has been known for a long time. Recent publications have reported studies over several catalysts. For example, the CO2 reforming of CH4 over mesoporous nanocrystalline zirconium powders (ZrO2–3%M2Ox; M: Ce, La and K) at 700ºC have shown methane conversion up to 60% (1). Similarly, the effect of Ni content (1–12 wt%) on the surface and catalytic behavior of bimetallic PtNi catalysts supported on ZSM-5 for reforming of methane with CO2 has been studied and report shows a maximum conversion of 16% and catalyst deactivation was observed during the first hour of time on stream (2). In another report, (3) Ni/a-Al2O3 catalyst was tested for syn-gas generation at 750ºC. The maximum methane conversion was 25%."

The Bureau of Mines evaluated 191 composites from the central Mesabi Range, Minn., chiefly by reductive roasting and magnetic separation. After reductive roasting and magnetic separation at minus 325 mesh, 28 composites produced concentrates that contained an average of 66.0 percent iron with less than 10 percent silica. Recovery of contained iron was over 90 percent. Natural magnetic material in excess of 5 percent was present in 142 composites. Trial flotation tests were used to evaluate three samples unresponsive to reductive roasting and magnetic separation procedures, and satisfactory concentrates having low silica contents (averaging 6.6 percent) were achieved.

The urban environment and geology create unique challenges for design and construction of deep foundations. The effect of these is prominently experienced in New York City. Three such project case histories are presented in this paper. The first project is a multi-use development. Relatively unusual glacial geology was observed at the site during the subsurface investigation phase. This played an important role in the selection of deep foundations as well as during construction. The design and construction aspects of the pile foundations, settlement estimates, a pile drive test program during design, piling equipment and production pile installation are discussed herein. A relatively smaller project is the second case history. A combination of drilled and driven deep foundations was employed in one area of the project due to its unique conditions. In another area of the project, an addition to a structure required the use of supplemental foundations to resist new additional loading. Tight space and load sharing with the existing foundations were important considerations in the design and construction. Finite element modeling of the existing and completed structure was performed which was an interesting aspect of the project. The third project case history involves a very large multi-billion dollar project in which various different types of deep foundation elements were used. The aspects requiring the use of such a variety of types and sizes of deep foundation elements included: geologic conditions, re-use of existing foundations, protection of adjacent infrastructure, construction staging, restricted space, loads, deep excavations, cost and schedule.

In the early days of minimal environmental protection awareness and unreasoning economy development pressures, little attention was paid to growing environmental concerns in Fuxin colliery, especially the air pollution problem due to the long term mining activities. In order to determine air quality concentration levels, a new technique for synthetic assessment of ambient air quality by using the extension of matter-element method is proposed in this paper. The air pollutants data such as Sulphur Dioxide (SO2), Carbon Monoxide (CO), Nitrogen Oxides (NOx), Total Suspended Particulates (TSP), Particulate Matter (PM10), and dustfall collected at four different air quality monitoring stations located in four districts of Fuxin colliery is used. The results obtained indicate that TSP, PM10, dustfall and SO2 are the predominant pollutants. Other pollutants such as CO and NOx are also detected in Fuxin colliery. The air pollution comes mainly from industrial emissions, mining activities and the abandoned gangue stockpiles. Compared to those applied to other mathematical assessment methods, it is demonstrated that the extension of matter-element model is quite appropriate for air quality assessment.

Over the past ten years, analysis of the acceptability of face ventilation systems has been based on numerical criteria rather than solely a study of air flow and methane patterns in the face area. This type of analysis has become possible primarily because of the instrumentation and mathematical models developed by the Ventilation Division, Pittsburgh Health Technology Center, Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA). To properly use these mathematical models, large amounts of methane and airflow data must be collected in the face area during mining activities. To supplement underground testing of face ventilation systems, a full scale model of a face area was built. This model includes a full scale model continuous miner, a face ventilation system, a gas release system, and a remote methane detection system. The remote methane detection system consists of an array of twelve methane sensors located throughout the face area. Data from the sensors are transmitted to strip chart recorders. Methane, air quantity, and other data collected during a test are entered into a computer for analysis. This paper presents the data entry system, the models used for data analysis, the test results, and the application of these results to a face ventilation system.

The White Pine orebody is characterized by a high lateral stress or highly faulted and joined conditions. Because of these difficult conditions roof support has always been a main concern. Mechanical bolts were widely used in the early seventies; however, it became apparent that major improvements in ground control were required if safe operation at White Pine was to be continued. The first step was taken in 1973-1974 with the testing of resin bolting. Record of caves and roof-falls with either type of support demonstrated superiority of resin bolting versus mechanical bolting - Safety was dramatically improved which was the absolute first consideration; however resin bolting was still more expensive than mechanical bolting. In order to generalize resin bolt installation, the second step was therefore to acquire special roof bolters compatible with resin bolting. The machine was to enhance the safety of the operation. This was achieved by the acquisition of the Secoma bolting machine equipped with an automatic bolting turret. Being a "hands off" operation the safety of the operator is total. Using a fixed taped attachment of the drill steel on the chuck a front guide and an automatic regulator torque thrust on the steel drilling in small diameter was possible. Being a fully automatic process only one operator is required per machine versus two operators with the conventional machines. The two main objectives were reached enabling the extension of resin bolting to the whole mine.

"An investigation has been conducted to describe the effect of grain refiner (e.g.,Ti) or modifier (e.g., Sr) on the microstructure of an Al-11.3wt%Si alloy produced by the Ohno horizontal continuous casting process using a heated mold so as to obtain directional solidification at high cooling rate of 300 to 2000°C/s. Experimental results demonstrated that the directionality of the primary a grain was promoted by the addition of0.2 to 0.4%Ti or by the addition of0.02%Sr, whereas the addition of0.6%Ti suppressed this directionality. Feathery a grains were promoted by the addition of 0.2%Ti, while these feathery a grains were suppressed when over 0.4%Ti (grain refinement) or when 0.02%Sr was added. The addition of Ti also resulted in increased coarsening of the eutectic Si in these Al-1 l.3wt%Si alloys.IntroductionThe mechanical properties of conventionally cast Al-Si alloys can be enhanced through judicious control of the casting parameters, by the addition of grain refiners (e.g., Ti) and by the addition of eutectic modifiers (e.g., Sr).[1-3] The Ohno continuous casting process[4-5] uses a heated mold (maintained at a temperature above the alloy liquidus temperature) to produce a casting with a mirror surface free of shrinkage defects. Traditionally, fine coal is more troublesome than the coarser sizes at every step of the coal-preparation process--screening, cleaning, dewatering, and drying. Therefore the present trend toward a higher proportion of fines in the run-of-mine product, brought about by changes in mining practice necessitated to increase productivity, has added greatly to the task of preparing coal for the market. One of the more difficult and costly problems involved is that of recovering fine solids from the washery water. These fine solids should be recovered in the interest of conservation, and they must be removed to provide recirculating water of proper quality. If there is a plant effluent, it must meet increasingly stringent requirements against stream pollution. Vacuum filtration has been used for years at a few plants to recover the extreme fines, but its additional cost discouraged general adoption until recently. Now, with growing emphasis on better solids recovery, filtration is becoming more widespread. Many coal slurries filter readily, giving high cake rates and clean filtrates. Others, however, particularly those containing either a high proportion of material finer than 200-mesh or an appreciable amount of clay, are much more difficult to filter. Many of these refractory slurries can be rendered more filterable by flocculation. A previous report of Bureau of Mines research dealing with flocculation alone was published in 1940.5/

IT has been ascertained in recent years that certain rocktypes, geological formations and structural conditions may be used as fairly reliable guides, when prospecting in recognized mineral belts or mining districts, with a reasonable certainty of discovering "pay-ore;" and that such is considered as a practically established conclusion may be inferred from a perusal of the recent reports of the U. S. Geological Survey and the literature of the several scientific societies discussing minim, geology, and kindred subjects. Cripple Creek is no exception to this conclusion, and the rock-type or association, rather than the structural condition, is the most infallible guide.† These guides consist of four, possibly five, dike-rocks, three of which are extremely basic, while the fourth is an acid rock of an entirely dissimilar character. The basic rocks are nepheline-basalt, limburgite, feldspar-basalt and tephrite. There are grounds, however, for believing that the two latter are subdivisions of one type, and therefore will be described under one head. The acid rock is quartz-porphyry. Nepheline-basalt is-a rock encountered in but few localities elsewhere on this continent, and occurs in narrow dikes cutting various formations. When typical‡ it is composed of

The G-Tunnel heated block experiment is being conducted on the Nevada Test Site (NTS) as part of the Nevada Nuclear Waste Storage Investigations project (NNWSI). The purpose of the ambient temperature testing ph se is to evaluate rock-mass mechanical properties of a block (- 8 m3) under biaxial stress changes up to 7.5 MPa above an initialization in situ value of 3.1 MPa. Results indicate that the modulus of deformation ranges from 9.7 to 17.0 GPa and Poisson's ratio ranges from 0.21 to 0.33. In general, the higher values of the modulus and Poisson' s ratio were influenced by fracture propagations parallel to the compressive stress field. Other measurements indicated that cross-hole compression (p) wave velocities and single fracture permeability values were relatively insensitive to stress changes above the in situ value.

Tracers of known densities are used world wide in coal processing plants to evaluate plant performance. Tracers are added to the feed stream and are counted after being recovered from the product and discard streams to determine partition curves. The need to recover the tracers can be eliminated by adding radio frequency identification tags to the tracers. Readers mounted on the product and discard streams record the passing RF tracers and produce the partition curve instantly. Tests were performed with three different shaped tracers at different collieries on cyclones ranging from 510mm to 800mm in diameter. Sink and float analyses of coal samples were used to compare conventional partition curves to partition curves obtained by using RF tracers. The average amount of tracers recorded was 78% of tracers in the feed. The results indicate that the stone shaped tracers represent the results from the sink-float analyses the best. The results suggest that RF tracers can be used to evaluate cyclone circuits in the coal industry and will make it possible to evaluate a coal circuit?s efficiency without stopping a plant and waiting for laboratory analyses. The in-pipe treatment of slurries with polymer addition shortly prior to deposition is a noteworthy emerging technology of increasing popularity. Although polymer treatment has been shown to substantially modify and improve depositional and dewatering behaviour in a significant number of cases, the impacts of polymer treatment on geotechnical performance of tailings are less well understood. For example, certain combinations of polymer and slurry type have been shown to result in lower final densities at a given vertical effective stress. Despite these lower densities, polymer-treated tailings often exhibit peak undrained shear strengths consistent with untreated material. However, the sensitivity and/or brittleness of the material may be negatively influenced by the looser state created. Although these changes have been studied, most testing available in the literature was undertaken on relatively ‘fresh’ samples of polymer-treated material. However, significant shear may occur following treatment and prior to the commencement of settling and self-weight consolidation as the material moves down the beach.To study the effects of shearing on the subsequent performance of polymer-treated tailings, a test program consisting of consolidation, triaxial and direct simple shear tests was undertaken on presheared polymer-treated material. Materials used were identical to those used in previously published studies on the impacts of polymer treatment in a ‘fresh’ condition. Shearing of the polymer-treated material generally appeared to lessen the impacts of the polymer treatment process. However, the behaviour of the material when sheared indicated that the polymer was still impacting the behaviour of the material in some respects. The results indicate the importance of the consideration of shearing on material behaviour when planning and designing a tailings deposit where polymer treatment is to be implemented.CITATION:Reid, D and Fourie, A, 2015. The method of feeding blast-furnaces to be described below is simply the application of well-known principles, and an attempt to carry that application to its logical conclusion. It does not involve radical changes in equipment, nor does it require unusual skill on the part of the furnaceman. In fact, much of its value lies in its very simplicity. Before giving details of the method it will be well to consider briefly the conditions under which it was used at the Nickelton plant of the British America Nickel Corporation, in the Sudbury district, before that plant closed down. The Sudbury nickel ore consists chiefly of pentlandite, chalcopyrite and pyrrhotite in a gangue of norite or greenstone. The proportions of sulphide and gangue vary widely in different mines, the former constituting about 45 per cent of the total in the British America sorted ore. The gangue is fairly uniform in analysis, carrying about 55 per cent Si02, 18 per cent A120 3, 13 per cent FeO and smaller quantities of CaO, MgO, Na20 and K20. The ore has been frequently described as refractory, a word which seems suitable when one considers the many unsuccessful attempts to smelt it pyritically, as well as the high percentage of coke normally used at all the plants in the district.

Industrial minerals are plentiful in Alberta. Although exi ting in variety and in quantity, they constitute a minor segment of the province's mineral industry, which is based on oil and gas. In 1983 Alberta led all the other provinces in value of mineral production with a total of $22,2 18 million, 62 per cent of the total for Canada. Of Alberta's total, $22 million or about 3 per cent came from the indu trial minerals. Nearly two-third of this production is accounted for by sulphur, which is actually a by-product of the oil and ga industry. Alberta ranked third among the province in industrial minerals production for 1983, with about 20 per cent of the national total.
