PRACTICAL designs for good "home made" molybdenum furnaces are hard to find in the literature. The one described briefly below left something to be desired but was good enough to operate as a rather long (30 in.) two-zone furnace for periods of over 2 months at temperature (1400° to 1600°C) without shutdown. The principal problem in our application was to establish a temperature profile with two distinct constant-temperature zones and no dip between the zones. This and other problems mentioned below would not arise, however, if both zones were operated at the same temperature and if a shorter furnace were acceptable. Since molybdenum windings oxidize very rapidly when heated in air, impervious refractory tubes were used for both the furnace core and the outer jacket tube shown in the accompanying figures. A protective atmosphere of forming gas (10 pct H2, 90 pct N2) was continuously passed through the gas-tight annular volume between the core and outer jacket. The water-cooled copper ends shown in Figs. 1 to 3 sealed the ends of the tubes. Annealed molybdenum wire (40 mil) was wound on the recrys-tallized alumina core (35.5 mm OD by 28.5 mm ID by 30 in.) at a spacing of 0.36 in. The spacing was reduced to 0.29 in. close to the ends to partially compensate for end heat losses. Fig. 2 shows two molybdenum-ground lead taps off the center of the winding to produce the two independect temperature zones. The ground lead was insulated with 1/4-in. alumina tubing and connected to the grounded copper end by passing the wires through the gas port tube and crimping each wire into notches cut at the mouth. To prevent sagging of the core at high temperatures, refractory "troughs" were cut from alumina and mullite tubing to cradle the core. The support "troughs" which were 6 in. long and located about 5 in. from each end of the annular volume also served as radiation shields. In view of the different expansion coefficients and operating temperatures of the core and outer jacket (3.5 in. OD by 3 in. ID by 30 in.), the ends of the tubes were smoothed and squared to produce good sealing surfaces, and the core was ground 1/32 in. shorter than the outer tube. The power terminals were passed through their respective conductor ports which were internally lined with alumina tubing and sealed with Armstrong adhesive A-6 leaving about 1 in. of protruding lead wire for external connections. (Adhesive A-6 is a two-component system consisting of an epoxy-type resin with a mineral fibrous filler and an amine catalyst.) Figs. 1 and 3 show the entire assembly of concentric refractory tubes, copper ends, and sealing o rings, held together with two brass flanges and 3/8-in. bolts with heavy springs for dimensional flexibility. The furnace shell (19 by 19 by 30 in.) consisted of a steel frame with sheets of transite forming a box. The copper ends protruded through two 3.75-in. circular holes cut at the center of each transite square end. Thermal insulation next to the transite exterior was effected by K-23 B&W bricks alld in a central volume of approximately 9 by 9 by 30 in. a row of K-30 bricks was lined up to support the hot assembly. Helical screw piles are used in various applications including the underpinning of distressed foundations and as deep foundations for new structures. At present, maximum design loads range between 12.5 and 50 tons. Helical piles installed with in-situ grouting of the central steel shaft are a relatively new type of deep foundation, which have extended the present maximum design loads to the 100-ton range. Vickars & Clemence discussed this new foundation system in a paper presented at GEO-Denver 2000 in Denver, CO. Over the past three years, grouted shaft helicals have been used successfully on remedial and new construction projects all across North America. The authors have studied several construction projects in a variety of soil conditions to compile a list of practical design guidelines. Those guidelines include installability of grouted shaft helicals based on soil type, equipment requirements, grout selection, and theoretical vs. actual load capacity. In a number of cases, full-scale, field load tests were conducted in both granular and cohesive soils and the results broken down between tip resistance on the helix bearing plates and friction resistance on the grouted shaft. Data is presented which will further efforts to develop a design model and method to accurately predict the axial and lateral capacity of grouted shaft helicals.

The treatment of a hydrobiotite containing 0·64 per cent copper with various soluHons showed that a high percentage (up to 90 per cent) of the copper can be extracted under mild conditions (1 M BCI, 85°C) or withsaline solutions (20 per cent by weight NaCI or NH4F, 400°C). The latter results suggest that the copper is incorporated in the interstratified vermiculite of a vermicuHte-biotite mica and the solutions (NaCl and NH4F) which reacted with the vermiculite without attacking the biotite gave the highest extraction yields.In general, extraction yields with saline solutions increased with the temperature (between 100 and 400°C) and duration (3 or 6 days) of the treatment but were not appreciably affected by the initial pH of solutions.The results of RCI treatment especially may have a bearing on the hydrometallurgical treatment of refractory copper ores where copper is tied to gangue silicates.

Calorimetric measurements have been made of the heats of solution of gold axd indium in a number of liquid tin-rich alloys at a temperature of 705°K. Relative partial molar enthalpies of gold were determined as a function of dilute solute concentrations in the binary Au-Sn system and in the ternary Ag-Au-Sn and Au-In-Sn systems. Relative partial molar enthalpies of indium were determined for dilute solute concentrations in the In-Sn, Ag-In-Sn, and Au-In-Sn systems. Through application of the interaction coefficient concept introduced by Wagner and more recently extended by Lupis and Elliott, ualues have been obtained for the Au-Au, Ag-Au, Au-In, and Ag-In enthalpy interaction coefficients in liquid tin. The results are inte@reted in terms of solute atom distributions through comparisons with the predictions of dilute solution models. INTEREST in the thermodynamic behavior of dilute liquid alloys stems from two primary sources. From a practical viewpoint, it is often of importance to know or to be able to predict the effect that one solute will have on the thermodynamic properties of the other solutes in a multicomponent system. Studies of dilute solutions may also be rewarding from the theoretical point of view. Some of the difficulties arising from the more complex interactions possible in concentrated solutions are avoided, leading to easier interpretations in terms of solutibn models and bonding energies. For example, in a binary alloy the limiting values of the partial molar properties of the solute represent the case for which each solute atom is completely surrounded by atoms of the solvent, and no other interactions are possible. Solute - solute interactions in dilute solutions are conveniently treated by the interaction coefficient concept of ~agner.' Using a Taylor series expansion for the logarithm of the activity coefficient, In yi, of a component, i, in a solution consisting of dilute solutes with atomic fractions xi, xj, xk, and so forth, in a solvent, s, and neglecting the second- and higher-order terms, Wagner obtained the expression: Where Wheyz is the limiting value of yi in the pure solvent, s. From the Maxwell-type relationships between partial molar quantities, it may be shown1'2 that e{ = ej, r}\ =tj), and ai - crj. Experimental determination of the interaction coefficients requires extremely precise measurements of the appropriate properties as functions of solute concentrations in very dilute regions. Few such data exist for intermetallic alloys, even for binary systems, because of experimental difficulties. This is especially true with respect to enthalpy data for dilute alloys. Examination of the compilation of data for binary alloys by Hultgren, Orr, Anderson, and ~elle~~ reveals that determination of limiting values of &fii(Xi =0) often requires extrapolations to infinite dilution from xi = 0.05 to 0.10. Direct measurements of the enthalpy interaction coefficient, qi, for multicomponent systems are virtually nonexistent. This quantity is of course subject to direct calorimetric measurement, but its determination must be limited to cases where high experimental precision is possible. The heats of solution of gold and indium in liquid tin can be measured with relatively high precision, which makes determinations of 73 involving these metals as the measured solutes experimentally attractive. This paper presents the results of such determinations of the Au-Au, Ag-Au, Au-In, and Ag-In enthalpy interaction coefficients in liquid tin. THE Tri-State field is now believed to be the largest zinc district in the world. It has a potential production sufficient to supply the entire zinc demands of the country. It is estimated that a train 70 miles long would be required to haul the district's 1919 output of 60 per cent. zinc concentrates. For many years,, including 1917, Missouri surpassed Oklahoma in zinc production. In 1918, however, Oklahoma led by a wide margin and, in 1919, Missouri produced less than one-sixth of the total for the three states, when Kansas replaced Missouri in second place in the production. The district is now producing one-third of the zinc of the world and twice as much as ever before at the present price.

AT its meeting on May 21, the Board of Directors approved the recommendations submitted by President Lovejoy and named a nominating committee for the year that is especially well distributed as to major technical interest and as to geography. As may be seen from the list published herewith, two come from the East, two from the Midwest, and three from the far West. Mr. Linton, the chairman, has been a valued member of the Institute for 36 years. A memorandum drawn up by Paul D. Merica, representing the A.I.M.E., and W. R. Barclay, representing The Institute of Metals of Great Britain, setting forth a reciprocal plan for special memberships in each Institute for members of the other, was discussed. Both societies already have formally approved the plan in principle and Dr. Merica was clothed with full authority to agree on a few small details that have not been settled, and conclude the arrangement in behalf of the Institute.

Tradition has often dictated low design load stresses on piles. Such traditions often developed prior to modern static or dynamic pile testing methods and perhaps result from a few limiting situations. These low stress limits were then broadly applied, even in cases where the piles could carry substantially higher loads. With sufficient testing to prove the design, higher design loads may present significant overall savings to the project owner. The cost of the testing then becomes an insignificant cost compared to the potentially great benefit of increased pile loadings. To confirm higher load possibilities for driven piles, the pile is tested either statically or dynamically. Further savings and increased testing efficiency result from remote dynamic pile testing. This paper presents a project where design stresses were considerably increased as a result of additional testing and use of remote dynamic pile testing equipment.

The investigation reported herein was undertaken to obtain data to supplement those presented in an earlier paper,l particularly for longer times at a higher temperature. This information may further develop our knowledge of the mechanism of diffusion in substitutional solid solutions. Diffusion of solute atoms interstitially dissolved is not difficult to visualize: it can take place without much disturbance of the solvent atoms. The mechanism of diffusion of solute atoms substitutionally dissolved is not so easily understood. Many theories have been advanced. Rosen-hain,2,3 Frenkel,4 Smekal,5 Langmuir,3,6 Steigman, Shockley and Nix,' and Johnson8 all proposed theories to explain diffusion. Langmuir's proposed mechanism consisted of a simple cyclic interchange of atoms involving an interchange in lattice positions of four or more atoms. This mechanism, accepted by the author at the time of his previous publication,1 and apparently quite generally accepted, required a net exchange in positions of both solute and solvent atoms in equal numbers. In other words, the rate of diffusion of the solvent and solute atoms would be the same. That this cyclic interchange in lattice positions of solute and solvent atoms in equal numbers is the only true mechanism of diffusion is denied by the evidence presented in this paper. Experimental Procedure This modification of similar procedure1 will be outlined briefly. The method consisted of the following steps: I. A pure Muntz metal (60.6 per cent Cu, 0.1 per cent total impurities) that was almost all beta brass at 780°C. was chosen. 2. The brass was turned between centers in a lathe to a diameter of 0.5965 inches. 3. After the brass was cleaned, it was electroplated with pure copper to a diameter of about one inch. 4. The sample was heated slowly to 400°C. under reduced pressure and held at that temperature for 4 hr. to remove occluded gases. It was then cooled to room temperature. 5. The sample was heated to 780°C. ± 3°C. and held at that temperature for different lengths of time; then quenched. Samples were cut off each time after quenching. Metallographic samples 1/4 in. thick were removed at I hr., 6 hr., 24 hr., 96 hr. and 701 hr. After 96 and 701 hr. samples of about I in. were removed for X-ray analysis. 6. The metallographic samples were polished on the cross section and photomicrographs were taken. 7. The I-in. samples were polished and etched on both ends. With the aid of a microscope each was carefully mounted in a four-jaw chuck in a lathe, so that they could be accurately bored for an arbor. 8. Turnings were taken for each X-ray sample. After each set of turnings, the sample was heated in an oil bath for about 1/2 hr. at 300°C. It was then etched in 25

This report describes a study of beryllium recovery from sulfate leach liquor by di-2-ethylhexyl phosphate (EHPA) solvent extraction in conjunction with caustic stripping. The work was one phase of Bureau of Mines research on process development for Spor Mountain, Utah, ores. Solution for the solvent extraction studies was prepared by sulfuric acid leaching of ore containing 0.6 pet BeO, Before solvent extraction of beryllium, the leach liquor was treated to prevent coextraetion of iron by either (1) removal of ferric iron by amine solvent extraction or (2) reduction of ferric iron to nonextractable ferrous iron by treatment with sulfur dioxide. Beryllim was extracted from the aqueous leach liquor by countercurrent multistage contacting with a kerosine solution of EHPA. The loaded organic solution was stripped with sodim hydroxide solution. Subsequently, beryllium hydroxide was precipitated by boiling the sodium beryllate strip solution and converted to beryllium oxide of 98 pct BeO-grade by calcining. Material of this grade can be directly processed into beryllium-copper alloy or be used as starting material for further refining to produce high-purity, nuclear-grade beryllium. Over 90 pct of the beryllium contained in the leach liquor was recovered as beryllia.

THE technical- advantages of adding oxygen to air and producer gas, or using it as a reactive agent, producing 400 B.t.u. gas instead of. the present 150 B.t.u., with higher flame temperatures and a reducing flame possible, with a smaller volume of gases passing through a furnace, will result in quicker melting, sharp working, and the production of a higher quality steel. Probably electric-furnace quality steel can be produced in an open-hearth furnace using oxygen. A modern, standard, 100-ton open-hearth furnace, with all equipment, costs from $350,000 to $500,000; there are about 1000 open-hearth furnaces in this country. When considering the use of oxygen in the open-hearth furnace, it is necessary to study: (1) The use of oxygen in the present furnaces, such that modification of existing furnaces and equipment cost the minimum, although the full advantages of oxygen are not thus obtainable. (2) The use of oxygen in a furnace designed for its use, producing quality and quantity steel at the lowest possible cost. This entails the junking of approximately one-half the value in existing equipment-writing off $250,000,000. The basis of such an estimate is the present cost of manufacturing open-hearth steel. Objection may be taken to some of the unit prices here given, but while some companies obtain their ores for much less, the prices quoted are -market price. They are used to show the maximum economy obtained by oxygen at that point.

Mineral deposits examined in and near the Raywood Flats RARE II area have low potential for development. The Mill Creek Mine (fig. 1), has produced about 14,000 tons (13,000 t) of marble, and another 5.5 million tons (5.0 million t) of marginal marble reserves suitable for lime, chemicals, and cement production are estimated to remain at this deposit. However, nearly all the marble is outside the study area. The deposit is marginal because alternate sources of marble are closer to markets. A tungsten occurrence in the marble is too small and low grade to be considered a resource. Ten tons (9.1 t) of uranium- and thorium-bearing material have been mined from a pegmatite dike at the St. Patrick Mine. However, this occurrence also is too small and low grade to be considered a resource. More than 400 lode and placer claims have been located in or near the study area. There are no current claims or mineral, oil and gas or geothermal leases.

Flotation circuit performance has become increasingly more challenging due to the complexity of available ore sources. To optimize value mineral recovery, the mineralogical composition of the ore should be evaluated and understood. Utilizing a variety of mineralogical and analytical tools, flotation processing challenges can be overcome and potential limitations understood. In this paper, several case studies will be discussed in terms of the value that has been provided through the use of mineralogical analysis to optimize flotation performance.

Safe and successful mine closure represents a fundamental work element that needs to accommodate the geochemical conditions existing at the completion of the mining and ore processing effort. Given the interests in limiting costs and time associated with mine closure efforts enhanced prior understanding of the geochemical conditions likely to exist upon exhaustion of the economic reserves can provide important benefits. The purpose of this paper is to document the benefits associated with geochemical modeling and understanding how the ore formation process may impact mine closure efforts, using one ore deposit type as an example. Specifically, this paper will emphasize the geochemical processes leading to the formation of sandstone-hosted uranium roll-type deposits and how the resultant concentrations and distributions of ore and gangue phases need to be incorporated into understanding the geochemical conditions projected to exist at the end of mineral recovery efforts. The paper will describe the evolution of geochemical conditions leading to ore body formation and the geochemical effects induced by open pit mining and how these may be used to understand both the geochemical controls and constraints on residual mine water. In addition, a discussion will be provided on how these conditions may be simulated by solution equilibria and kinetic modeling to develop optimum approaches to achieve applicable closure standards. This paper will also discuss specific augmentations to existing industry standard solution equilibria and kinetic models and associated thermodynamic databases to maximize the predictive accuracy of the geochemical modeling results. The benefits of understanding the electrochemically reactive behavior of uranium and associated gangue phases and incorporating this behavior into mine closure efforts will be presented. The culmination of the benefits of the geochemical modeling will ultimately be the development of a sustainable approach to uranium mine closure that is based upon an engineered environment designed to return the ore body to stable geochemical conditions.

In Australia and New Zealand, the 'Australasian Code for Reporting of Identified Mineral Resources and Ore Reserves', which was released by industry in 1989, is operating successfully in a co-operative approach between industry and regulatory authorities. Similar codes or guidelines exist or are under development in the United States of America, Canada, the United Kingdom and South Africa, although the regulatory backing given to the Australasian Code is unique. International standard definitions for Mineral Resources and Reserves, and for categories of Resources and Reserves, have been under development by the Council of Mining and Metallurgical Institutions since 1994 and have already stimulated considerable convergence of definitions and reporting standards in participating countries. It is hoped that agreement on this international standard for public reporting by mining companies will be reached within the next two years, and it is expected that adoption of the standard will result in a higher and more uniform quality of reporting worldwide, with a consequently greater interest on the part of the general public and financiers in investing in the mining industry.

Iron ores obtained from different sources differ in their chemical and physical properties. These variations make the process of grinding a difficult task. The work carried out in this context focuses on three different samples of iron ore, viz., high silica high alumina, low silica high alumina, and low silica low alumina. The grinding process for all the three iron ores is carried out individually in Bond’s ball mill and the total retention time taken by each iron ore sample is calculated. The present investigation focuses on utilizing the calculated retention time of the iron ore as a standard grinding reference time to the laboratory ball mill for optimizing the grinding time of each ore. The desired P80 (150 μm) with an acceptable range of hematite liberation (> 75%) was obtained in the laboratory ball mill after reducing 6 min from the total retention time taken in the Bond ball mill.

Marine environments present a range of challenges for pile construction. This paper contains a discussion on the design and construction of marine piles for a recent Toll Shipping wharf upgrade in Burnie, Tasmania. The project involved several new structures including mooring, berthing and ramp dolphins supported by driven tubular piles with rock sockets, and an onshore mooring dolphin and ramp abutment supported by bored piles. Through the project, a range of construction challenges were experienced, including availability of tubular piles, the different penetration depths of driven piles into rock, the ability to drill out sockets when the piles were raked, the difficulty in verifying the design intent, latent conditions and ship impacts. The paper will present a summary of the different factors that influenced design concepts for the structures involved in the upgrade, and the challenges involved in the design of the structures. Following this, the paper will describe the methodology used to verify the design (including a pullout test), observations made during pile construction and lessons learned on how to limit risk throughout construction.

From the time of its emergence as an independent state until the late 1950's, the Republic of Ireland suffered from chronic unemployment, the lowest living standard in Northern Europe, and-most serious of all-an aggravated emigration problem which drained off most of its talented young people. In 1958, however, there was a drastic legislative reaction to these problems, and this in turn ignited the current mining boom in Ireland. Paving the Way to Prosperity In order to reverse the tide of emigration, the Irish government now realized, challenging domestic employment opportunities had to be increased and living standards had to be raised. It was also apparent that future industrial and economic growth in Ireland had to be based on producing goods for export. The home market could not sustain large-scale expansion, and consequently Ireland's chronic balance-of-payments deficit could best be minimized by producing export goods. These considerations, together with the limited amount of accumulated wealth in Ireland, combined to set the objectives of the country's First Program for Economic Expansion in 1958. The general objectives of this program were (1) to stimulate all segments of the economy, (2) to develop foreign trade and (3) to attract foreign capital.
