The possibility of replacing the brattice cloth closest to the coal mine working face with an air curtain mounted on top of a continuous-mining machine or with a diffuser fan was explored by the Bureau of Mines. Preliminary tests conducted at a full-scale model working face with the brattice end set at 18 feet showed that the air curtain improved face ventilation only slightly and was not nearly as effective as placing the brattice at 10 feet. A 2,000-ft3/min diffuser was more effective than the air curtain. It is concluded that the air curtain probably could not function as a line brattice extension, although the diffuser fan may have some potential.

You here are all familar with the myriad of new laws, some enacted and some pending, that affect the mining industry. These laws, for example those dealing with suspended matter, affect us in Alaska as they do you. Likewise, our friends in government, the Geological Survey and the Bureau of Mines, provide us with the same fine services that they do elsewhere. I am not going to speak today about these, but concentrate on one act of Washington, D.C. the impact of which is felt, for now at least, principally in Alaska. A little more than a year ago, I spoke in Spokane on the subject, "Governmental Challenge to Mineral Development in Alaska." I outlined some of the policies of Government which were operating to change the rules under which the industry operates and to alter the relation- ship between government, industry, and the individual. At that time the Native Claims Settlement Act had not been passed, but was on the verge of being so. In reading over what I said in Spokane, I note that I touched on many points where Government was actually challenging mineral development in Alaska. With the passage of the Alaska Native Claims Settlement Act, many of these actions were given a cloak of legality, and machinery was set up to concentrate the drive to tie up the public domain, machinery which will allow govern- mental control and interference with the actions of individuals on something like 90% of Alaska's land surface. This remarkable law is going to affect each and every one of you. Now, a year after its passage, we are only just beginning to see its lesson for the future. It was created by a coalition of powerful groups, who got other groups to support them by promising to deliver something they had no intention of delivering. Alaskan issues are again being used to get various groups not to oppose legislation which will severely harm them. It will help to understand the nature of this new drive if we understand the Native Claims Act and how it came into being.

This paper gives a brief outline of the mining and milling methods which will be used on the Stirling zinc-lead-copper ores by Stirling Mines, Limited, who have for the past two years been developing the Stirling mine in Richmond county, Nova Scotia, and who will bring the mine into production in November, 1929. No attempt has been made to give the paper a detailed technical character, for the main reason chat, since base-metal mining is something new in Nova Scotia, it is felt that a general description would be preferable before this Society, whose membership is mainly made up of chose engaged in the coal mining and associated industries. Furthermore, as both mining and milling operations will be governed to a certain degree by the experience gained after production commences, there are many points which cannot be definitely stated now. GEOLOGY Before discussing the mining methods, it is desirable to present a general picture of the geology and occurrence of the ore-bodies. The surface rocks in the vicinity of the mine consist of rhyolites of .pre-Cambrian age. These volcanic flows outcrop in very few places, usually along' the beds of creeks or on the shores of the numerous small lakes. Consequently, a detailed geological map is not available. The exploration work carried out to date has revealed a sheared zone extending through the volcanic flows for a distance of over 1,000 feet. Along this zone, there has been a replacement of the rhyolites by a carbonate rock for widths varying from 50 to 230 feet, and it is in this carbonate formation chat the mineralization at a later date took place.

Miners, like many skilled blue-collar workers, are not traditional learners. They have not generally been successful in classroom-type settings, preferring to learn on the job in a hands-on environment. U.S. miners are required to have annual safety training, but they rarely view this positively. In fact, it has been called “safety jail” by many of them, who regard it as a time to get a little extra sleep. The challenge then, was to find a way to develop effective safety training for these people, particularly in view of the fact that their work is among the most dangerous of all occupations. Miners are born story tellers. They share “near-miss” stories, stories about master miners they have known, and stories about how things used to be. These stories not only pass along information about what will happen if a miner fails to respect the mining environ-ment, they also instruct listeners in the culture of mining and the values it embraces. Stories, it seems, are a way to get safety messages to miners, especially inexperienced ones, and using older, wiser miners in these stories is an obvious choice. This paper will discuss how the training videos created to get safety messages to miners were developed, how “master miners” and story lines were chosen, and how the resulting videos have been received in the mining industry.

"A series of tests was carried out on a dry blend of PPAN and LAN prills (LANFO). The objective of thetests was to determine detonation stability and VOD performance compared to ANFO. Heave andfragmentation results in the field were also evaluated visually. A number of factors were behind for.mulating this blend. A lower cost is combined with higher in-hole energies, but at slower reactionrates and lower peak borehole pressures. The resultant effect is improved heave characteristics andlower energy losses caused by inefficient crushing of the rock immediately around the borehole.The test results indicate that IANFO is ideally suited to blasting in softer midburden and overburdenrock types often encountered in coal strip mines."

In this article, the cementation of major impurities from zinc sulphate leach solution by the addition of zinc dust was studied by considering different parameters including time, mesh size, and percentage of excess zinc dust. The output obtained from various experiments was utilized for the design of experiments. A multi-level categorical factorial design with a quadratic model was employed during this study. Results were predicted to minimize the concentration of impurity metals in the solution by altering the parameters. Furthermore, these predicted results were validated by performing another experiment. Successfully, it showed that the predicted and experimental data values were close to each other. The predicted optimized values were 40 min, 100% excess zinc dust, and 300 mesh size for copper; 42 min, 100% excess zinc dust, and 300 mesh size for cobalt; 37 min, 100% excess zinc dust, and 300 mesh size for cadmium; and 34 min, 100% excess zinc dust, and 300 mesh size zinc dust for nickel. At these optimized values, the experimental results showed 99.99%, 55.7%, 99.6%, and 76.6% cementation efficiencies for copper, cobalt, cadmium, and nickel respectively. The statistical design of experiments for the effective cementation of impurities corroborates the economic feasibility of optimizing parameters for the proposed process.

Geography: The Tagtepe district of the Vilayet of Eskigehir is about 20 miles northeast of the city of Eskigehir (approximately midway between Ankara and Istanbul) in western Anatolia. The area is a mountainous one, the highest peak being Tagtepe Mountain (5200 ft) which is approximately in the center of the district. The mountains drop off to the deep valley of the Sakarya River on the north and to the plain of Eskigehir on the south. For the most part, the watershed is on the northern side of the mountain barrier, draining into the Sakarya River, which in turn empties into the Black Sea midway between Zonguldak and the mouth of the Bosphorus. The approximate area covered by the Tagtepe district is shown in fig. 1. Transportation to shipping points is available via the Istanbul-Ankara railroad. The station on this line nearest the mining district is Alpikoy station, about 20 miles by road southwest of Tagtepe Mountain. Interior roads within the district are poor. Being of dirt, the winter rains and snows render them almost impassable for trucks from about the middle of December until the end of March, thus presenting a considerable transportation problem. However, the roads from the Bagoren and Tagtepe chromite mines to the railroad shipping point at Alpikoy station have recently been repaired and will be maintained for all-weather truck transportation. Detailed climatic data are not available. However, in general the spring, summer, and early autumn months are dry, and good weather may be expected from May until early November. Then the winter rains commence, and heavy snow is usual during January and February. Geology: The mountainous structure of Tagtepe belongs to basic rocks of serpentine (Variscan Orogeny) which is in contact with Paleozoic schists at west, and an Oligocene outcrop of red clays in Margi-Sepetci region (see fig. 1) at southeast. The northwest and southwest borders of Tagtepe district are, respectively, surrounded by Paleozoic schists and pebbly gray and yellow Neogene clays. More recent formations of alluviums overlay the plain of Eskigehir. Dark basic rocks of trachytes with hornblende are visible on Turkmenbaba Mountain, at the west of Tagtepe. Mineral Occurrences: Chromite: the most important mineral found in any quantity in the Tagtepe district. The alignment of the deposits of chromite is in general along the line Bagoren-Tagtepe (see fig. 1). The first mines in the area were those of Tagtepe and Bagoren, which were developed over 20 years ago with Swedish capital. Other deposits of chromite, more recently discovered and so far of less importance, are being worked at Kurucor, Komurcu, Gelinmezari, and Lacin (see fig. 1). Deposits average generally between 46 and 48 pct chromic oxide, with the exception of the Bagoren mine which averages 44 pct. However, a new lode, very recently plotted, in the Tagtepe mine averages 50 pct Cr,O,, 4.6 pct SOz, and 7 pct FeO. Geological character of the chromite occurrences in the Tagtepe mine may be considered typical of most chromite lodes in this area. The indications are that the formations of ore lenses are developed by the segregation of chromite crystals intruded into the serpentinized rock, and exposed later to tectonic movement within the zone of crystallization. All lenticular masses are more or less regular in shape and follow each other in southeast-northwest direction and dip generally 70" NE. Ore lenses do not seem to persist in depth, average depth of two lenses is 60 ft below surface. Three lodes .have been mined as open-pit. The average dimensions of individual lenses are as follows: pitch length, 100 ft; breadth, 27 ft; and width, 20 ft. The lenses and their enclosing rocks are broken by parallel fractures in approximately east-west direction. This little sketch of the late Willet G. Miller, Provincial Geologist of Ontario, is intended to be neither a biography of his career nor a eulogy of his life. His biography has already been written in an incomparable manner by Mr. T. A. Rickard, his eulogy by Canon Cody. What more can be said of Dr. Miller than is summed up in the words of that great Canadian divine, Canon Cody, that he was "Big in body, big in heart, and, as we learned, big in brain." This article, then, will merely record a few personal reminiscences of the man himself, and while they are necessarily disjointed, they may at least serve to illustrate certain traits in his character which are not generally known or appreciated outside of the circle of his intimate friends. In the latter part of May in the year 1904, Willet G. Miller, with two? assistants, set out for the small village of Haileybury to begin his geological work in the area a few miles to the south which he was soon to name Cobalt. At that time the Timiskaming and Northern Ontario railway was not finished, although the right-of-way was cleared and partly graded. The nearest railway station was on the Canadian Pacific at the south end of lake Timiskaming, from which point the old steamer Meteor carried passengers and freight up the long, narrow and deep waters of lake Timiskaming, a very pleasant trip of some sixty miles. On this particular trip there was a fairly large crowd on board consisting of settlers going into the clay belt north of lake Timiskaming, of lumbermen, and of a few merchants and commercial travellers who were interested in the small business centres of Haileybury, New Liskeard and Ville Marie. Scarcely any attention was paid to the reports of the newly found silver deposits, although the daily papers had announced discoveries in the district six months before. As a matter of fact, the chief excitement on board was afforded by a moose, which, in swimming from the Ontario to the Quebec shore of the lake, crossed the bow of the boat, the captain steering to within a few yards of the terrified animal.

REFERENCES Under the heading "Development System for Block Caving under Severe Conditions" a report was presented to this congress regarding a magnesite mine using block caving for several years. On account of the experience gathered in this mine and the results of far reaching exchange of experience, as well as under due consideration of the international literature it is tried to systematically list and briefly discuss the following factors that have to be considered for development and draw control of block caving. 1. NATURAL FACTORS It is self evident that this implies all those circumstances given by nature and which cannot be altered by man. Any mining activity is subjected to those and the success is depending on how far technology can be adjusted to those conditions. Geology Deposits of considerable thickness with rather steeply inclined flat-faced contacts are optimal for block caving. While vertically there is practically no limitation- for the deposit, theoretically, the smallest horizontal basis apt for operating block caving is the minimum area necessary to get the rock to completely cave in by undercutting and drawing. Practically, only consider- ably bigger main dimensions are found, mainly because of technical factors (machinery and equipment) and economic factors (cost ratio of exploration vs. development, danger of contamination).

"Sand and gravel are the second and third largest minerals in production in Brazil, and this is increasing noticeably. The extraction of natural sand from river beds is increasingly restricted and most of the sand used in large cities comes in from more than 150 km away, resulting in high transportation costs. As a result, it has become more common to use crushed rock as artificial sand. The main difficulties in this process are controlling the shape of the particles and the content of deleterious materials, such as mica. Within this situation, this paper presents an alternative to using artificial sand for concrete use. Our procedure involves the following steps: a) sampling sand from different production days, b) characterizing the bulk sample by particle size and shape distribution, chemical composition by X ray fluorescence and mineralogical composition by X ray diffraction, c) removing fine grains by air classifier, d) performing intensive attrition with high pressure washing and e) characterizing products. The results demonstrated that this sample contains a huge proportion of fine grains and a notable content of mica, which is distributed along all sieve fractions. The presence of mica makes the use of sand in concrete unfeasible, moreover scanning electron microscopy analysis demonstrated that this phylossilicate is finely grained and associated with coarse fractions. Thus, the removal of fine fractions made possible a partial reduction in mica content. Furthermore, intensive attrition demonstrated that the procedure was efficient to remove most of the mica while also reducing sharp edges, which improved the shape of these particles."

A demonstration project investigated the feasibility and effectiveness of two management interventions, Management Training and Organization Development, for improving productivity and safety in metal/non-metal mines. The management training intervention was conducted at Texasgulf Company's trona mine, using three nearby trona mines as controls. The Organization Development intervention took place in Hecla Mining Company's Lucky Friday mine, using the highly similar Star Mine as control. The two management interventions seemed about equally effective in reducing accidents and injuries, as well as MSHA citations, and the management intervention at the Texasgulf mine also appeared to have led to substantial improvement in mine productivity.

Molybdenum and nickel in black shale ore exists as amorphous sulfides which has highly active, and easily oxide to sulfuric acid and sulfate at low temperature in the presence of excess oxygen. Take advantage of the characteristic to leach molybdenum and nickel from black shale. Oxidation, conversion and dissolution behavior of amorphous colloidal molybdenum and nickel sulfide in pressure leaching process was studied. The effects of stirring speed, temperature, concentration of sulphuric acid, oxygen process and mineral granularity on molybdenum and nickel leaching were investigated. The results showed that dissolution rate increased with increasing temperature and stirring speed, but decreased with increasing concentration of sulphuric acid. And dissolution of molybdenum and nickel from ore only need oxygen without any other reagent.

To allow routine measuring of the exposure of underground workers to N02 from diesel engines and residual gases from blasting. The Approach: A miniature sampler absorbs NO2 which can be measured using a simple method adaptable to both multiple automatic analyses or individual on-site analysis. How It Works: The NO2 sampler is encased in a plastic tube approximately half the length of an ordinary ball point pen and clipped to an underground worker's hard hat. Removal of the end cap activates the personal sampler. Air from the working place enters the open end and diffuses at a controlled rate down the tube interior. The diffusion rate is dependent on tube dimensions (ratio of cross-sectional area to length). The Bureau of Mines and Old Ben Coal Co. concluded a cost-sharing contract in 1975, the objective of which was to demonstrate the Herrin No. 6 coalbed in southern Illinois can be mined safely by longwall methods. Under the agreement, three longwall panels are to be mined at Old Ben No. 24 mine. A premining investigation laid the groundwork for specifying a roof-support system designed to control hazardous ground. Old Ben Coal Co. and Bureau engineers selected lemiscate-type roof shields. A rock mechanics program and geological mapping provide early warning capability and criteria for future equipment design. The effect of mining on the surface was monitored by a surface survey to develop subsidence-prediction criteria for the Illinois coal basin. The first of the three longwall panels started up in September 1976 and was completed in May 1977. The major adverse condition was the occurrence of limestone concretions, called coal balls, in massive pods. The shields provided adequate roof control even in faulty ground. Operation of the second panel started on August 1, 1977, following panel-to-panel transfer of the equipment. The accident rate was low.

Diesel particulate matter (DPM) has been classified as a carcinogen to humans by the International Agency for Research on Cancer. As a result of its potential carcinogenic nature, DPM exposure is regulated by the Mine Safety and Health Administration. Currently, diesel emissions in the workplace are monitored by collecting the aerosol onto filters, which are then sent to a laboratory for thermal-optical analysis using the NIOSH method 5040. This process can take days or even weeks, and workers can potentially be exposed to excessive levels of DPM before the problem is identified. Moreover, the delay involved in getting the loaded filter to the lab inevitably means the loss of some of the more volatile organic carbon. To remedy this delay, researchers from the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health are seeking to develop a field-portable, real-time method for measuring elemental and organic carbons in DPM aerosols. In the current study, the use of mid-infrared spectrometry was investigated. It is believed that mid-infrared spectroscopy is more suitable for use in a real-time field-portable device than thermo-optical analysis methods. This article presents a method for measuring organic carbon (OC) and elemental carbon (EC) in DPM for a broad range of OC/EC ratios. The method has been successfully applied to laboratory-generated and mine samples.

The reliability of a set of flotation results is key to minimizing project risk either at concentrator commissioning, or at the point of implementing an improvement to an existing concentrator operation. High-Confidence Flotation Testing was developed for this purpose, and is part of the list of technologies of various scales used by Xstrata Process Support (XPS) in addressing these projects. The methodology is based on two principles: one, to ensure that the ore sample is representative and has been well-blended and subsampled; two, to perform the flotation tests in sufficient numbers of replicates with appropriate quality controls, so as to improve the reproducibility of the test data. Across ten years of practice and continuous improvement with this methodology at Xstrata Process Support, Sudbury, several improvements to this method and complementary connections into sampling and quantitative mineralogy have been developed. Two case studies are reviewed. These show the capability of this system in both optimizing an existing concentrator operation and in serving a new mine scenario. Further work to improve the efficiency of this procedure has been identified.

Massive pillar failures were observed at two underground coal mines. The results of stability analysis using traditional pillar design formulae did not agree with the underground observations. Finite element models were used to analyze the causes and mechanisms of the pillar failures. The results were confirmed by the underground observations. Finally, the improved mine plan for each case was derived to ensure the stability of the underground structure.

An efficient state-of-the-art dynamic model to simulate and predict the rate of water production in longwall coal mining operations was developed as a tool for mine planning purposes. The model can also provide an estimate of any potential resultant hydrogeological impacts of an operation via an array of element-specific single-valued parameters referred to as the field rating indices. The computational procedure was designed to fully exploit the benefits of hydrogeotechnology and utilize a combination of conceptual, physical, empirical, and numerical approaches to define, characterize, analyze, and evaluate flow con- trolling properties of fractured rock systems. The model presented here provides a dynamic prediction method for highly fractured flow; a practical tool in mine and water control planning; and a cost-effective means of assessing, based on the best available technology, the impacts of mining on the water resources within a mining environment to satisfy local and federal regulatory requirements. Unique features include consideration of laminar and non-darcian flow domains in double-porosity-pressure hydrogeological media.

An equation developed for gaseous hydrocarbon mixtures predicts molal volumes with an average absolute deviation of 0.73 percent when applied to 264 natural gas and condensate systems including 2,043 PVT points. Another equation developed for liquid hydrocarbon mixtures predicts molal volumes with an average absolute deviation of 1.12 percent when applied to 346 crude oil systems including 1,759 PVT points. Both equations require composition of the mixture to be expressed as mole fraction of methane through heptanes-plus, hydrogen sulfide, nitrogen and carbon dioxide, together with the characteristics of the heptanes-plus fraction in addition to the temperature and pressure. The equations cover wide ranges of the variables involved, and their accuracy is considerably better than that of other available methods. The equations were differentiated to allow calculation of the coefficients of isothermal compressibility and isobaric thermal expansion. (In this paper the coefficient of isothermal com-pressibility and the coefficient of isobaric thermal expansion will be expressed as compressibility and thermal expansion coefficient, respectively.) Equations to calculate these quantities are presented. INTRODUCTION Calculations of reservoir performance for petroleum reservoirs require accurate knowledge of the volumetric behavior of hydrocarbon mixtures, both liquid and gaseous. Compressibilities are required in transient fluid flow problems, and thermal expansion coefficients are important in thermal methods of production. An accurate laboratory investigation of the PVT behavior of each reservoir fluid encountered would be costly and time consuming. For this reason various correlations for predicting fluid properties have been developed and recorded in recent literature. Correlations have been presented in the form of graphs, tables and equations. Since an increasing number of studies are being conducted with the aid of electronic computers, recent efforts have been directed toward development of correla-tions suitable for computer programming. Application of computers permits the use of more complex correlations which otherwise are not feasible. Moreover, methods for predicting reservoir performance, particularly those based on the compositional material balance, depend upon the capability of accurately expressing the molal volumes and other fluid properties as functions of pressure, temperature and composition.
