Chemical and isotopic analyses of fumarole gases from Galeras Volcano, Colombia provide significant insights into the origin of volatile components in the magma. Water comprises a mixture of magmatic (rock-equilibrated at high temperature) and meteoric, with the relative proportions varying through time. Carbon isotopes are most consistent with a mantle source, although other contributions to the system cannot be ruled out. Nitrogen most likely originated from organic matter in subducted oceanic sediments. All of these 'primary' components have been modified somewhat by interaction or exchange with other reservoirs during ascent to the surface. In addition to information on the origin of the gases, these data show significant temporal variations precursory to eruptive events. Chemical ratios change and water becomes more meteoric in character prior to eruptions.

The report describes three experiments that were conducted to determine the effects of size and weight of the miner's battery pack on performance in the low seam coal environment. Three separate experiments were carried out in a simulated low seam coal mine. The first experiment tested the sensitivity of task measures (i.e., subjects performed locomotion) shoveling, cart pushing, and timbering tasks) to detect variations in the size and weight of the battery pack. The results of the first experiment demonstrated that only the locomotion tasks were sensitive to size and weight variations. The second experiment, therefore, focused on the locomotion tasks and tested the effects of varying size and weight on task completion time. The third experiment was designed to compare the present battery pack to a radically different configuration of power cells. The most important findings were that changes in weight affected locomotion times but changes in size and configuration had small and inconsistent effects. Opinion data of subjects indicated a strong preference for a battery nark belt concept.

"In case of free gold presence in ore, there is always problem of a choice between the gravity-flotation and gravity separation flowsheets. Study of morphology of gold being extracted by different methods allows to find the most efficient solution. One of the latest methods of gold concentration for wide range of grain size (-0.8+0 mm) is a flash flotation. The paper presents comparative testing results of flash and centrifugal separation.The goal of the studies was to determine process and flotation parameters of flash flotation. In case valued minerals are soft if compared to host rock, such minerals tend to concentrate into circulating load of grinding circuit. Thus, valued minerals can be overground, and in turn, will result in low extraction in flotation circuit. Integration of flash flotation operation into process flowsheet has been evaluated. Flash flotation operation can be successfully used not only for gold but also copper, lead, nickel and silver minerals.With low-sulphide ores being a case study under laboratory conditions, various flotation (impeller rotational speed, air flowrate) and process (pulp density, collector consumption, frother consumption, time of flotation) parameters were studied in view of its impact on gold flash flotation. Experiments were carried out under laboratory conditions using special pneumatic mechanical flotation machines.INTRODUCTIONGravity separation is used for extraction of coarse gold before cyanidation and before flotation of polymetallic ores to increase gold total recovery into gravity copper and lead concentrates.Benefit of the flash flotation is efficient recovery of coarse gold carrier particles (sulphides) thus preventing its regrinding and, as a result, low recovery. Furthermore, combination of flash and conventional flotation results in final tailings that do not require further cyanidation.Combined gravity-flotation flowsheets are designed for concentration of ores containing gold within thewide range of grain sizes (see Table 1)."

For each tonne of chromite ore mined in Sukinda, approximately ten tonnes of fine overburden material is generated. The overburden typically contains about 30 - 60 per cent Fe2O3, 0.3 - 1.1 per cent Ni, four to nine per cent Cr2O3 and 0.04 - 0.2 per cent cobalt and is being discarded leading to loss of valuable metals and creating environmental pollution. In order to take the advantage of presence of iron, nickel and chromium, the present studies advocate the utilisation of nickel lateritic chromite overburden for production of Ni bearing pig iron through blast furnace extracting maximum iron and nickel from the chromite overburden. The present paper deals mainly with the beneficiation of chromite overburden, sintering characteristics and thermodynamic studies. The beneficiation study shows that a beneficiated concentrate having Fe - 50 per cent and Ni -- 1.1 per cent can be achieved from chromite overburden having Fe - 30 per cent and Ni -- 0.7 per cent. Sintering studies have been carried out with bed height of 300 and 450 mm at a suction of 600 and 900 WG respectively. The results reveal that good quality sinter can be produced from chromite overburden concentrate with a basicity of about 1.0 and coke breeze consumption rate about 16 per cent. In all the experiments, Tumbler Index, Abrasion Index and Shatter Index was found to be in the range of 65 - 70, 4.5 - 5.5 and 85 - 90 respectively. The other parameters namely softening temperature, melt down temperature, reduction degradation test and relative reducibility have also been determined. A thermodynamic analysis has also been carried out to make a technological assessment of the process for the production of alloyed pig iron from chromite overburden in blast furnace which shows that it is possible to produce nickel bearing pig iron in blast furnace using the sinter up to 80 per cent. Techno-economic analysis reveals that this route will yield a substantial profit even after accounting for cost of beneficiation, extra coke, raw materials and extra slag produced.

Drilled shafts and precast concrete piles were installed for the foundation of several structures in a reconfiguration project of a refinery in Minatitlan, Veracruz, in the Gulf of Mexico. The soils are alluvial deposits of flat land from the Coatzacoalcos River, which are embedded with layers of sand, soft clay, and peat. As part of a QC/QA program, load tests, both static and dynamic, axial and lateral, were performed. In this paper results of 32 axial tests are presented, in which typical load-displacement curves were measured at the top of the foundation elements; from the interpretation of these plots, data were recorded for ultimate side shear and in some cases for end bearing capacities, which are compared with the theoretical results of the final stage of the foundation design. The comparison shows that under allowable loads, side shear determines the bearing capacity of piles, even when the tip is embedded in a hard layer. Underestimation of the side shear is evident; therefore design criteria, as well as the methods used for obtaining soil parameters, should be reviewed.

O lingotamento contínuo de tarugos é um processo extremamente complexo dependente de variáveis que influenciam diretamente na qualidade do aço lingotado e na produtividade. Geralmente essa influência é conflituosa. É necessário conhecer melhor os parâmetros de processo para compreender seus efeitos naquilo que é a base do lingotamento contínuo: a transferência de calor na interface metal/molde. Foram levantados dados de temperatura durante o lingotamento de diversas corridas de aços em uma planta de aços longos especiais. As medidas de temperatura das paredes do molde da máquina LC foram obtidas, utilizando-se termopares estrategicamente posicionados ao longo do comprimento do molde e nas suas faces. Através da obtenção dos valores de temperatura desses termopares e do levantamento dos dados de processo de cada corrida monitorada, foi possível correlacionar a influência da velocidade com a transferência de calor na interface metal/molde. Por fim, os resultados mostram que o aumento da velocidade de lingotamento gera um aumento na transferência de calor.

The heat content above 25.0° C up to 1,000° C was measured for six rock types: St. Cloud Gray Granodiorite, Holston Limestone, Sioux Quartzite, Rockville Quartz Monzonite, Salem Limestone, and the basalt at Dresser, Wis. The calorimetric data were obtained with an isothermal jacket-copper block calorimeter. The experimental heat content data for each rock type are presented, along with specific heat data obtained from the temperature derivative of the heat content. For the six rock types the maximum deviations of the specific heats at a given temperature were within 10 percent below 575° C and within 34 percent above 5750°C. The increase in the values of specific heat range from a minimum of 13 percent for the basalt at Dresser, Wis. (temperature range, 100° to 1,000° C) to a maximum of 46 percent for Holston Limestone (temperature range, 100° to 870° C).

South Crofty's ventilation network is large and complex. Of the total exhaust air quantity 40% enters the mine by leakage routes through old workings, this air carries high concentrations of radon gas and results in the mine becoming a classified work place under the Ionising Radiation Regulations 1985. Improvements in the control of the ventilating air and dilution by increased air quantity have reduced the average contamination to aelow-0.2 WL. The major part of the radon originates from ground water inflows and from concentrations of radium within the mine with direct emanation from rock surfaces being negligible. Of 600 kBgs-1 total radon leaving the mine 93% cannot be accounted for from known and accessible sources.

In Northland, New Zealand, localised large deposits of halloysite clay have been produced by in-situ alteration of rhyolite volcanics of Pliocene or Pleistocene age, which were erupted through pre-Pliocene sedimentary strata and locally through Pleistocene basalt; and which were subsequently onlapped by further basalt flows. Alteration to clay has been a result of both hydrothermal and of meteoric processes, and decreases in intensity of alteration with increasing depth. The raw material is crushed and fractionated to produce a product of less than two micron particle size, which is of exceptional whiteness and brightness. The unique properties of the clays render them highly desirable for specialised ceramic purposes.

Preventive maintenance practices are listed in the manufacturers' instruction books. In general, equipment that requires frequent and extensive preventive maintenance is generally the most costly. The manpower spent on these frequent trips to remote areas is such that it is usually better to invest in a more costly system which requires little preventive maintenance. The best preventive maintenance for the system is a good installation. 7.2 Preventive Maintenance and Inspections With any system, periodic inspection is required because of the corrosive atmosphere and adverse conditions that exist in underground mines. These inspections can spot potential trouble in the system. Repair or replacement at that time averts the possibility of losing effectiveness of all or part of the system. 7.2.1 Cables Approximately once per month all cables in the communications system should be inspected for kinking, chafing, cracking, wear, stretching, or other signs of physical abuse. Particular attention should be paid to cable glands at the entry or exit points to the various units in the system, where the cable goes around sharp corners, in the vicinity of holding cleats which may be clamping the cable too tightly causing potential damage, and across the areas where the cable is exposed to physical damage from outside sources, such as equipment or falling objects. If a cable is damaged, it should be replaced as soon as possible. It is mandatory that the ground leads and connections to carrier current phones be thoroughly inspected and maintained in good condition, since considerable hazard may exist to the operator or equipment if a ground connection is broken. 7.2.2 Pager Phones The most readily available test set to determine if a pager telephone is operating correctly is the pager phone itself. The following physical check of the system can be performed at any phone station. 7.2.2a Listen Circuit Remove the handset from its cradle and listen to determine if the circuit is functional, as indicated by the presence of noise or conversation on the line. If no noise or voice signals are present at the handset receiver, take the following corrective action: 1. Operate the handset press-to-talk switch several times. Any corrosion on the contacts of this switch may cause a receiver to be temporarily inoperative. Repeated operation may clear the condition. 2. Open the cabinet and see if the battery cables are properly connected and are making firm contact. Check the handset cable and its connections in the cabinet of the pager phone, and see if there is any evidence of a break in the cable, corroded contacts, or poor connections. 3. Remove the handset receiver earpiece by unscrewing it counterclockwise (to the left), and remove the receiver from the socket. Examine the handset cavity; in some units, a patch of cotton batting or floss is used as a barrier to reduce acoustic feedback in the handset. If the cotton patch has absorbed moisture, remove it and replace with a crumpled ball of soft rubber, stuffed just far enough into the handset so it will not touch the receiver or switch terminals. 7.2.2b Page Circuit and Talk Circuit Push the page switch, squeeze the handset press-to-talk switch, and call any other phone. Release the page switch

Using a series-model of an automotive short range radar sensor (SRR) and a recently completed experimental radar system, field tests have been performed in a surface mine. It was examined, to what extent low-cost electronically scanning radar sensors can provide useful data for assistance systems on large scale mining machines. Simple sensors are useful for anti-collision safety zones or hopper car automation. The more complex and sophisticated experimental radar system using digital beam-forming can clearly detect and map the contours of trenches and slopes. The overall promising results refer to many more potential applications for electronically scanning radar in surface and underground mining as a reliable alternative to mechanical laser scanners.

IN this critical period of our history, the coal industry of the nation, faced with many obstacles, performed its work safely during the first ten months of 1943. Thousands of the younger mine workers were inducted into the armed forces of our country and in many instances their jobs have been filled by others without much if any experience and training. This situation alone would seem to be sufficient to interfere with the safe and orderly operation of the industry but the Government's demand for a substantial increase in coal tonnage over that produced in normal times introduced a hazard which always accompanies speed, regardless of the skill of the worker.

Mining professionals recognize the need to continuously evaluate and refine mine planning standards and scheduling. We must examine our current reality, and evaluate the following: •How well do our planning standards represent the actual mining process? •To what extent do they support the requirements of the downstream mining activities? •How we apply them to operational management and control? In most operations, mine-planning standards are global averages. Little differentiation is madein quantifying key planning variables. Often standards used in the long-term, are applied to the short-term, and the standards and scheduling precedents are only reviewed occasionally. Mine-planning standards applied to production schedules are often only focused on the management of functional mining performance, and play no role in managing the requirements of down stream processing. Many mining operations are characterized by high levels of fluctuation, and typically incorporate a wide range of factors and adjustments to compensate for deviations from performance targets, in mining operations as well as for the other business areas. The reason for using global averages is because of a lack of understanding of the causes of deviations that occur through the process, and the impact that they may have on the performance of the business as a whole. Average standards and factors are often used to quantify the variability in a system. From these average values, measurement standards and performance targets are derived for the planning and execution environments. During the execution of a plan/schedule there will be deviation in actual performance and the planned ‘average’ standards. In reality the ‘average’ conditions seldom occur and the impact of variability and interdependency are seldom constant or predictable. The predictability of variability and interdependency is further complicated by the fact that mining conditions have a role to play in the actual production performance, and they too are variable. By developing the throughput knowledge of our production systems, we can better understand the nature of variability and the interdependency within the systems as well as the impact of interdependency between the links in our production chains. With this knowledge, planning standards and scheduling precedents can be better defined and sensibly differentiated. This will improve planning and management of ore utilization, mining production and the effectiveness of processing. As a result the business will be more stable and predictable and business performance will be improved. The purpose of this paper is to describe: •At a high level, the scope for refining and differentiation in mine planning standards, and incorporating geological and plant parameters into mine scheduling. This will improve planning and scheduling and the overall performance of the mine. Given our current level of scientific knowledge and the technological tools at our disposal we should be able to plan and schedule production so that we can manage pro-actively and improve business performance. In doing so we can also improve reconciliation and value tracking through mining and processing •The flexibility and functionality of the XPAC planning and scheduling tool that will enable a throughput management approach.

Research was conducted by the Bureau of Mines to determine feasible roasting methods for the removal and the recovery of germanium, cadmium, and lead as enriched fractions from sphalerite concentrates. The two types of roasting processes studied were: (1) Batch, with a stationary bed, and (2) continuous, with a suspended bed, Results indicated that either method gave satisfactory metallurgical recoveries} but the continuous process is recommended because of inherent advantages. Final products were enriched fractions that could be treated by conventional methods for production of metallic germanium, cadmium, and lead. In the batch process, the concentrates were placed in a large tube furnace and heated at 1,080° C, an average of 3 hours. During the heating period, inert, reducing} or sulfur-laden gases were passed over the stationary charge to convey the sublimed metal sulfides from the hot portion of the tube to a lower temperature condensing zone at the end of the tube, where the metal sulfides were collected on baffles and recovered. In the batch and fluidizing roasting processes alike, the gases passed over or through the charge and served only as carriers for the sublimates and as suspension media in fluidization roasting. Since both processes depended on the volatilization, at relatively high vapor pressures, of the sulfides of germanium, cadmium, and lead, it was imperative that very little oxygen come in contact with the charge to alter the sulfide minerals. Germanium has a high affinity for oxygen, but in this instance it was buffered by being in solid solution in zinc sulfide.

A major share of the increase in the energy demands of Ontario province in the next decade will be supplied by bituminous coal mined in the U,S, To be competitive with alternative sources of energy, it is essential that the delivered cost of coal, inclusive of all transportation charges, be kept at a minimum. The Bessemer aid Lake Erie Railroad Company and the Pittsburgh and Conneaut Dock Company are currently building a shiploading terminal at Conneaut, Ohio, to service this tonnage, together with expected increases in coal consumption in the Eastern Lake Erie - Lake Ontario area, (see Fig, 1).

Seven austenitic alloys of varions base compositions and minor-alloy additions were solution-treated, aged systematically between 1200oand 1800oF, and examined by X-ray and electron metallography. Intragranular preczpitations of µ, Laves, s, ?', Ni3Ti, and x phases were observed as a function of composition and aging time and temperatwre. Phase solubility limits were detevtnitzed within 100Fo intervals. These inter metallic compounds fall into two distinct general classes, and whichever class predomznates depends on base composition. It has become increasingly evident that multicom-ponent austenitic alloys are well characterized by their precipitation processes. Since certain groups of elements act as one, the relationships among these processes are reasonably simple; complete identification of such processes is usually attainable by a systematic aging study with a combination of techniques centered on microscopy and diffraction. Several nickel- and cobalt-base alloys illustrating cellular precipitation and its interaction with general precipitation were reported previously.1 The group of alloys covered in the present paper demonstrates precipitation-hardening reactions involving two distinct classes of intermetallic compounds where the predominating class appears to depend on base composition. This dependency ties in with a crystal-chemistry regularity first observed some twenty years ago by Laves and Wallbaum but never amplified to our knowledge. Results of electron-microscope and X-ray diffraction studies on systematically aged hot-rolled alloys known commercially as S-816, S-590, Rene-41, Incoloy-901, M-308, and M-647 are reported here. Some of these alloys have previously undergone minor-phase analyses by other investiators. Alloy S-816 was investigated by Rosenbaum, Lane and Grant,3 and Weeton and Signorelli.4 Rosenbaum found only CbC in hot-rolled bars. Lane and Grant found CbC and a small amount of M6C in the cast structure and stated that both carbides form during aging, most of the precipitation being CbC. Weeton and Signorelli found CbC, M23C6 and a weak indication of a phase after a slow step-down cooling cycle from 2250°F. Rosenbaum also investigated hot-rolled samples of S-590 and identified CbC and M6C. Preliminary information on Rene-41, gained partly from the present work, was reported by Morris.5 Long-time precipitation phenomena in Incoloy-901 at 1350°Fwere investigated by Clark and Iwanski.B heir raw data re- semble those of our present heat with 0.1 pct B, while their interpretation of these data resembles our interpretation of data from another heat with only 0.001 pct B; they made no statement as to boron content. No previous minor-phase studies of alloys M-308 or M-647 have been reported. EXPERIMENTAL METHODS Table I gives alloy compositions in both weight and atomic percent. Specimens were solution-treated from 1700º to 2200ºF, aged at logarithmic-time intervals up to 1000 hours between 1200 and 1800 F, and examined in accordance with procedures previously described in detail. ' ' Phase extractions were carried out in electrolytic cells containing 800 ml of either 7 pct HC1 in denatured ethanol or 20 pct H3PO4 in water. After electrolysis for 48 hr at 0.1 to 0.2 amp per sq inch, residues were separated by filtration or centrifuging. X-ray powder patterns of residues were recorded on a diffractometer for accuracy and on film for sensitivity. Lattice parameters were calculated by least-squares analyses of indexed sin 8 values, and relative abundances were estimated from intensities of strongest lines of each phase. These phase abundances denote relative amounts with respect to each other rather than to the alloy. Mechanically polished specimens were etched in a freshly mixed solution of 92 pct HC1, 5 pct H2SO4, and 3 pct HNO3. Parlodion replicas for the electron microscope were chromium-shadowed in high vacuum at a glancing angle of 20deg. All electron micrographs are reproduced here with the shadowing source above. The correspondence betweenelectronmicrostructures and phases identified by X-rays was established by a high redundancy of correlation between relative amounts at different stages of aging and examination above and below critical transformation or solubility temperatures. INTRODUCTION The occurrence of the radioactive element radium, [2gg~a], often in trace amounts, in the crust of the earth gives rise to a flux of the daughter product radon, ['ii~n], across the earth-air interface. This so-called exhalation process has been studied by many investigators [KO 45, Kra 64, Pe 66, Wi 741] over several decades. In the earlier investigations the exhalation process was studied in a purely geophysical context, but over the last 20 years it has been realized, that under certain conditions the exhalation may be intense enough to also have radiological implications. This is for example the case where relatively radium-rich wastes or by-products, like uranium mill tailings and phospho-gypsum, are stored in larger quantities. In order to be able to predict the radiological impact on the environnent it is necessary to know the rate of exhalation of radon from the surface of the exhaling material. Usually the determination of these exhalation rates has been done by measurements in situ directly upon the accumulated material [~le 74, Ha 791. Although such field measurements have the obvious merit of dealing directly with the full scale problem, the results are often lacking in generality, making predictions for other situations difficult or even impossible. The present paper describes some results of an investigation where it is attempted from laboratory measurements on samples of limited size to obtain material parameters, which are suited for extrapolating and predicting the radiational behaviour of larger accumulations of the material. THEORY Let us consider a sample of a radon exhaling material enclosed in a container with a dead space volume, Vd, and initially containing radon free air. If the total exhalation rate (number of atoms per unit time) is c, the radon concentration (number of atoms per unit volume) N will initially grow with the time t according to the equation [ ] where [R] is the decay constant of radon. As the concentration (or activity) in the container grows, the net exhalation rate will slow down because of back diffusion, and, furthermore, radon atoms may be removed from the container, not only by radioactive decay, but also by diffusion leakage [JO 81 ]. If, however,only the initial. part of the activity growth curve is considered, the total exhalation rate, c, is given by [c = r•Vd(2) where r is the initial activity growth rate in the container. Let the container be cylindrical with an inner cross-section S and filled to a height L with a radon exhaling material with the specific mass p, the porosity E, the radon pore production rate f and the diffusion length i. In the construction of internal-combustion engines, the cooling of the combustion chamber and pistons is of great importance. In certain types of engines, the adequate dissipation of heat from the bearings is also important. One of the important factors affecting heat dissipation from these parts is the thermal conductivity of the material used. A search of the technical literature shows that, in general, the thermal conductivity of the elements1 has been determined accurately by a number of investigators. The data on the industrial alloys are, however, meager. For an investigation of these alloys, the thermal-conductivity apparatus described in this paper has been constructed at the laboratory of the General Motors Research Corporation. It is desirable that an apparatus for work of this nature should give fair accuracy of results with a convenient form of specimen and a reasonable rapidity of operation. A summary of the different methods of determining thermal conductivity is given in the first volume of the " Dictionary of Applied Physics," pages 429 and 470. The method selected as best satisfying these conditions is that of Griffith, on page 443, with the addition of a guard ring similar in principle to the method used by Berget (P. 445). In the construction of internal-combustion engines, the cooling of the combustion chamber and pistons is of great importance. In certain types of engines, the adequate dissipation of heat from the bearings is also important. One of the important factors affecting heat dissipation from these parts is the thermal conductivity of the material used. A search of the technical literature shows that, in general, the thermal conductivity of the elements1 has been determined accurately by a number of investigators. The data on the industrial alloys are, however, meager. For an investigation of these alloys, the thermal-conductivity apparatus described in this paper has been constructed at the laboratory of the General Motors Research Corporation. It is desirable that an apparatus for work of this nature should give fair accuracy of results with a convenient form of specimen and a reasonable rapidity of operation. A summary of the different methods of determining thermal conductivity is given in the first volume of the " Dictionary of Applied Physics," pages 429 and 470. The method selected as best satisfying these conditions is that of Griffith, on page 443, with the addition of a guard ring similar in principle to the method used by Berget (P. 445).
