Grinding media consumption is a major cost variable in industrial mineral comminution circuits. Specifically, industrial SAG media consumption results from a combination of surface abrasion wear, media breakage, surface spalling and rejection size from the mill. Three main consumption rates; weight of media consumed per time, per kWh and per weight of ore ground are defined and compared. Recent industrial data has provided an opportunity to relate consumption in terms of weight of media consumed to weight of ore ground (g/tonne) and weight of media consumed per kWh of energy consumed (g/kWh) with SAG specific grinding energy consumed (kWh/tonne). Using relationships developed from this data it is possible to project SAG media consumption in future mineral comminution circuits.

Maintaining an adequate supply of minerals and metals to meet national economic and strategic needs is the overall goal of the Bureau of Mines, U.S. Department of the Interior. One method of achieving this goal is to conserve scarce metals by cladding a plentiful base metal, such as iron, with a scarcer metal. To investigate cladding, a vacuum-rolling mill capable of rolling bimetal specimens at temperatures to 1,300° C in a residual gas pressure of 2 x 10-5 torr was established. Metals that were successfully bonded to iron included stainless steels, chromium, nickel, nickel alloys, copper, and several refractory metals including molybdenum and titanium. The effects of the rolling temperature, reduction in thickness, rolling speed, and residual air pressure on bonding strength and bend ductility of the bimetals were determined. Optimum rolling conditions produced bimetals with bond shear strength essentially equal to that of the iron base metal.

You should by now have acquired something of the engineering point of view, the open skeptical mind. the power to observe, experiment, and draw conclusions, form theories and test these by further experiment, and weigh the inherent probability of conclusions drawn by others. I am asking you today to consider certain facts and the conclusions I am drawing from those facts.

Noise Induced Hearing Loss (NIHL) is the most common occupational disease in the U.S. with devastating consequences particularly in the mining industry. A study conducted by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) revealed that 90% of coal miners have hearing impairment by age 50, compared to only 10% of those not exposed to occupational noise. According to the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA), Continuous Mining Machine (CM) operators account for 30% of workers exposed to noise doses exceeding the Permissible Exposure Level (PEL). This number becomes more dramatic considering that 49% of the total national underground coal production is extracted using these machines. In this context, NIOSH is conducting research to identify and control dominant noise sources in CMs. Previous noise source identification was performed using a Brüel &Kjær (B&K) 1.92-m diameter, 42-microphone phased array. These measurements revealed that the impacts from the conveyor chain onto the tail roller, and the impacts from the conveyor chain onto the upper deck are the dominant noise sources at the tail-section of the CM. The objectives of the work presented in this paper were: 1) To rank the noise radiated by the different sections of the conveyor, and 2) to determine the effect of a urethane-coated tail roller on the noise radiated by the tail-section. This test was conducted using an Acoustical and Vibrations Engineering Consultants (AVEC) 3.5-m diameter, 121-microphone phased array. The results from this new test show that a urethane-coated tail roller yields reductions in the tail-section of 2 to 8 dB in Sound Pressure Level in the frequency range of 1 kHz to 5 kHz. However, integration of the acoustic maps shows that the front-section and mid-section of the conveyor also contain dominant noise sources. Therefore, a urethane-coated tail roller in combination with a chain with urethane-coated flights that reduces the noise sources in the front and mid sections of the conveyor is required toyield a significant noise reduction on the CM operator?s overall exposure. These results show the applicability of phased array technology for low frequency noise source identification.

The guard electrode system measures the resistivity of formations by employing a thin disk of current which is caused to flow perpendicular to the bore hole. The control of this current disk is obtained in a brute force manner through the use of relatively long equipotential electrodes above and below the measuring electrode. The log obtained from the system is free of "lag," "plateau," "shadow," "reflection" and other distortions evident on conventional logs. The proportionate contributions of the hole size and invaded zone resistivity to the apparent resistivity reading are reduced when the mud and filtrate resistivities are lower. Thus, the guard system favors the use of conductive muds. The mathematical development of the theory is given in an appendix. Equations are derived to evaluate the effects of mud resistivity, hole size, invaded zone resistivity and depth, and the true formation resistivity. Sample logs from several provinces are reproduced and compared with conventional electric logs to illsutrate the much greater detailed lithology that can be presented by the guard electrode system. INTRODUCTION With increased ability of those in the petroleum industry to analyze formation characteristics from electrical resistivity data, there has become apparent the need for more precise measures of that parameter. The measurement of the resistivity of a homogeneous and isotropic material can be made simply when the body of the material is infinite in all dimensions and the measuring electrodes can be placed within the body. In such a case, the current leaving an electrode follows a spherical distribution and the mathematical expression for the potential level at any distance from that electrode can readily be derived.'.' If it is considered that the active electrodes are within a bore hole filled with mud of a resistivity different from that of the formation. the current does not flow in a spherical pattern near the current source or sink, and the calculations of potential levels become more difficult. The additional consideration of a section of formation invaded by mud filtrates, and thus having resistivity different from either that of the mud, the adjacent formations or of the undisturbed formation, makes the mathematical problem extremely complex. Should the vertical dimensions of the formations be considered as finite. the problem becomes so complex as to preclude reasonable solution. Yet, even these considerations have not described adequately the conditions encountered in a large proportion of the wells to be studied. In efforts to evaluate the effects of the various conditions. combinations of twn, three. and four electrode logging con- figurations of the conventional types have been used. The resulting logs have left much to be desired in some provinces. It has become apparent that the use of such configurations will not result in adequate measurements being made, particularly in cases where the formation is composed of thin sections. If all the current of a resistivity measuring circuit is made to flow through the formation opposite the exploring electrode, many of the shortcomings of the conventional measuring system are eliminated. In the guard electrode method of electrical well logging to be discussed in this paper, the current is so controlled by causing it to flow in a thin disk normal to the axis of the logging tool. EARLY HISTORY The guard electrode method of electrical well logging in its early years was a joint development by the Geophysical Research Corp. and the Amerada Petroleum Corp. Over the last four years, an international initiative, championed by Vehicle Projects LLC, the Fuelcell Propulsion Institute and Natural Resources Canada, has been active in carrying out research projects to prove out the concept of applying fuelcell technology to underground mining vehicles. These have been carried out by a consortium consisting of mining companies, equipment manufacturers, technology developers, national laboratories and consultants, with the participation of Canadian and U.S. mine regulatory agencies. This clean technology, which produces only water and electricity, would allow several advantages to be obtained, in the health area (by eliminating diesel emissions and reducing noise generation), in lowering production costs (such as reducing ventilation required) and lowering green house gas emissions. This article outlines the results obtained in several key areas, such as the operation of fuelcells in underground conditions, risk issues related to underground and surface operation of hydrogen vehicles and hydrogen production and delivery systems, and the design and mining performance of the world?s first hydrogen mining vehicle, a mine production locomotive. The work to date on the fuelcell loader, designing the power plant and power transmission systems, operational requirements, and operating cost reductions, is also presented. There is also an evaluation of the overall mining applications and advantages this technology can bring to underground mining, including the facilitation of automation and tele-remote operation.

Substantial cost savings have been demonstrated by material design changes after initial product development. As more information about a product's operating environment becomes available to a designer, it is possible to consider a more costeffective material that still meets or exceeds the design intent, such as minimum low cycle fatigue life. This is especially true in the aircraft engine industry, where precise operating cycle data is not available until after the first engine is built and tested. A methodology for predicting estimated low cycle fatigue life has been developed to investigate potential material change candidates for an aft cooling plate. A twodimensional macromechanical finite element model (FEM) has been developed using ANSYS and used to determine the effects of varying material properties. It is shown that slight changes in density, coefficient of thermal expansion and modulus of elasticity have profound effects on component and effective stresses, and therefore, estimated low cycle fatigue (ELCF) life. No caso do processo de sinterização, a presença de elementos traços está ligada a composição de sua carga. Com o objetivo de determinar quais elementos irão compor as emissões atmosféricas, resíduos, efluentes e produtos faz necessário estudar o modo de ocorrência dos elementos traços em cada insumo. A interação entre as propriedades de cada elemento e as condições de massa e termodinâmicas permitem o estudo de seu comportamento e partição. Assim, o objetivo deste trabalho é levantar o estado da arte da sinterização de minério de ferro e suas emissões, estudando a origem, o comportamento e a partição de elementos traços e radionuclídeos, quando submetidos às condições do referido processo.

As part of a continuing effort to develop technology that maximizes mineral and metal recovery from domestic resources, the Bureau of Mines investigated a method to totally utilize copper converter slags without recycling them back through the matte smelting furnace. The research was directed toward (1) recovering the contained copper in converting slags by producing a recyclable copper-iron matte, (2) carbothermically reducing the slags to recover the iron, and (3) producing slag wool from the depleted slags. This report deals with the reduction of three industrial converting slags, containing 2.0 to 7.3 wt-pct Cu, in an 800-kVA electric arc furnace to produce a recyclable copper-iron matte. The addition of sufficient iron pyrite to provide 29 to 113 pct of the stoichiometric sulfur (based on producing 40-pct-Cu matte) produced a recyclable matte (36 to 61 pct Cu) at an energy consumption of 520 to 700 kWh per ton of solid material charged. The expected energy saving for treating molten slag in an electric furnace (5-to 9-MVA range) is about 400 kWh per ton of molten slag treated.

As a consequence of the Coal Mine Health and Safety Act of 1969(PL91-173), the Bureau of Mines (BOM) entered into a contract with Ocean Energy Inc. (OEI) to develop, fabricate, install, and evaluate a permissible lighting system for use on a longwall coal mining operation. The program schedule is shown in Figure 1.1. The proposed regulations are contained in Appendix A. The initial part of the program involved a survey of existing longwall lighting practices in Germany and England and an evaluation of a variety of lighting components on a mockup of a longwall mining operation that was fabricated under this program. Visits made to German and British mines uncovered major differences in lighting level requirements, permissibility aspects, size, and operating constraints which identified wide disparities and essentially eliminated from further consideration any known imported lighting devices for meeting the higher lighting levels and standards proposed for US coal mines by the Mining Enforcement and Safety Administration (MESA). The longwall mockup provided use¬ful information regarding the amount of illumination required, physical size and shape of lamps, light distribution problems, cable routing, use of connectors, signaling, glare, and other important factors unique to the lighting of low coal longwalls.

Premature coating failures of new and refurbished structural steelwork of clarifiers have been a common occurrence at power generation plant in recent years. Several of these failures have ended in disputes regarding which party was actually to blame for the early degradation of the coating system, i.e. quality of the power station?s water, poor application, substandard materials, outdated corrosion protection specifications, etc. Having investigated several of these premature failures, it is clear that the corrosion protection of clarifier steelwork is a highly complicated process and that the painting work needs to be closely monitored in order to ensure long-term protection by whichever product that is applied. The need for quality control inspections during the painting of the plant is often underrated during the project planning stage, also the importance of detailed corrosion protection specifications that consider not only the practical application of the materials, but also the quality control responsibilities of the Contractor, End User and Third Party Inspectorates that may be involved. This paper considers the application constraints of coatings to clarifier structural steelwork and importance of stringent quality control procedures in order to ensure the long-term performance of the corrosion protection systems.

High-temperature heat contents of InAs and GaAs were measured over the temperature range 400°K to temperatures above the melting points using a di-phenyl ether drop calorimeter. Smoothed values of the thermal properties have been derived and tabulated at even temperature interuals . The heats of fusion of InAs and GaAs were determined as, respectively, 8790 ± 200 and 12,590 ± 300 cal per g-atom at the respective melting points of 1210º ± and 1513º ± 1°K, yielding entropies of fusion of 7.26 * 0.16 and 8.32 ± 0.20 cal perºK per g-atom, respectively. A general discussion of the thermal properties of III-V com-pounds is given. THE low-temperature heat capacities of InAs and GaAs have been determined by Piesbergen.1Using a dynamic temperature modulation technique, Miller2 has determined the heat capacities of the compounds as well as GaSb and Ge between room temperature and 650°K; however, it has been observed that values determined by drop calorimetry for GaSb3 and for germanium4 are consistently about 5 pct lower than Miller's results. Cox and Pool10 report values for the heat content of InAs and GaAs and the heat of fusion of InAs. No value for the heat of fusion of GaAs appears to have been previously reported. This paper reports results of high-temperature heat content investigations of InAs and GaAs measured in the range 400" to above 1500°K employing a diphenyl ether drop calorimeter. These results, together with our previous results on III-Sb compounds3 as well as heat-content measurements5 of solid InP and Gap, are used in a general discussion of these compounds. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURES High-purity samples of the compounds, stoichio-metric to ±0.1 at. pct, were supplied in the form of crushed crystal fragments by Dr. Carl Thurmond of the Bell Telephone Laboratories. The conditioning of semifinished steel products such as billets, blooms, and slabs to remove surface defects before further processing to finished products is a necessary accompaniment to steel mill rolling operations. A knowledge of the kinds of defects which occur and of the conditions in melting, teeming, and rolling that may lead to their occurrence is favorable to the production of quality products. Surface defects may be classed as either of mechanical origin such as those that occur in the heating and rolling operations and include breaks, tears, guide marks, mechanical laps and the like, or they may have been in the ingot before heating and rolling. Examples of the latter are ingot cracks, blow-holes, scabs, and inclusions which lead to the numerous known types of seams and surface flaws. Most of the common types of surface defects and methods for their identification by visual examination or by the aid of macro-etch tests are well known. The conditions which caused their formation are also appreciably understood and this knowledge has been instrumental in the establishment of methods for metallurgical control. There are, however, defects of doubtful origin. In any endeavor to trace the causes for their occurrence, the question of first concern is: I. Whether they were formed in the rolling procedure. 2. Whether they existed in the ingot prior to rolling. In the case of semifinished products which are rerolled to finished products there is also the question of whether they were formed in the primary or in the secondary rolling. In metallurgical laboratories where numerous or routine examinations of the quality of rolled products are made over the course of time, there will doubtless be many puzzling cases of defect origin. Microscopic examination of the defects may, however, reveal a characterizing condition that can be used to classify them broadly with respect to their origin. Such a condition has been observed and, after detailed investigation, is described here with the thought that it may offer a usable and relatively simple solution to a bothersome problem. Basis For Classifying In this discussion the term "mechanical type defects" will be used to designate those that have occurred as a result of the rolling operations such as in rolling from the ingot to billets, blooms, or slabs or in rerolling to finished products. The term "steel type defects" will be used to designate those that were present in the ingot prior to primary rolling or that were in the semifinished product prior to secondary rolling to finished product. Exploration for ore deposits in southeastern Missouri in the 1950's resulted in the important discovery of lead, zinc, copper and silver in 1955. Further discoveries in the area led to the naming of the Viburnum trend. It has sometimes been referred to as the "New Lead belt" to distinguish it from older lead-producing areas to the east. As presently developed, the "trend" is 35 miles long, running north and south about 50 miles west of the Lead belt. Galena (lead) is the principal ore mined, with lesser quantities of sphalerite (zinc), chalcopyrite (copper) and silver recovered as economic by-products. The ore body is as much as 140 feet thick and 1,200 feet wide, and is found in the Bonneterre Dolomite (Upper Cambrian) at depths ranging from 700 to 1,200 feet. Since its discovery many companies have engaged in exploration and several major companies have developed new mines and constructed mills and a smelter in the area. The first mine in the Viburnum trend came on stream in 1960, but as more mines came on stream and others reached capacity, lead production increased to the point that the Southeast Missouri Lead district produced 432,576 tons of lead in 1970 to become the world's largest lead-producing region (Missouri Geological Survey and Water Resources, 1971). The Viburnum trend area with its rolling, heavily forested hills and numerous clear running streams is in the Clark National Forest of the Missouri Ozarks. Until the recent development of its mineral resources, the area was sparsely populated and nearly unmarked by the activities of man. A portable optical instrument for performing multispot laser vibrometry is described. The instrument is capable of measuring arrival times, surface motion frequency, and surface velocity and displaying these quantities in various useful ways. Sigma Research is currently pursuing the development of such optical measuring systems for the evaluation of structures in rock by non-contact interferometry methods. This work was sponsored by the U.S. Department of Interior (U.S. Bureau of Mines) under a Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) contract number J0145075. The goal of the work was to develop a portable tripod mounted measuring system which can be set up at arbitrary distances (up to 30 meters) from a surface and project four in-line laser sample beams on this surface. A light receiving telescope gathers the scattered light from these four spots and provisions are made to mix this light with a reference beam from the laser. Four photodiodes are employed to determine the resultant interference signals which characterize the motion (particle velocity, frequency, amplitude) of the four illuminated spots on the surface under sudy. Information of this type can then be used to characterize the elastic or mechanical properties of the surface in question. In some cases (if more than four spots are involved) this surface information could be back propagated to draw inferences about the internal state of the material volume bounded by this surface.

Rock joint stiffness is not only a poorly known parameter, but also has no established laboratory measurement procedure. This paper presents methods used to determine the normal and shear stiffnesses of healed joints filled with vapor-altered minerals obtained from the Yucca Mountain site in Nevada. Results show that these joints behave linearly up to 85% of their loading history and are stiff with strengths very close to the strength of the intact rock. Factors that might have contributed to the linear behavior of these joints are discussed and areas requiring further investigation are provided. Joint normal stiffness ranges from 7.16 to 64.77 GPa/mm with an average value of 26.93 GPa/mm, while joint shear stiffness averages 11.41 GPa/mm and ranges from 3.09 to 28.41 GPa/mm. Young?s modulus of the vapor-altered joint infilling was calculated from the stiffness of the healed joint. Young?s modulus of the vapor-altered joint filling material averages 7.89 GPa and ranges from 2.15 to 19.43 GPa. Given the pervasive presence of such altered rock, usually in the form of sub-spheroidal 3-D pockets, this property should be of value in any numerical modeling attempting to describe the mechanical behavior of these tuff formations at the level of detail where inclusions might be a factor.

Fan stall is a notorious phenomenon with axial-flow fans. When multiple fans of this type serve a ventilation system, their mutual impacts are very complicated and not well understood. Results from laboratory experiments indicated that the immediate consequence of a fan working across its stall zone (i.e., the pronounced trough on the fan characteristic curve) is that some branches in the system may suffer abrupt and even drastic changes in air quantity and pressure. The quantity range of the fan that causes the abrupt change is called an unstable operating range. The corresponding quantity range of a branch is called a non-achievable quantity range of the branch because any quantity within this range cannot be achieved without changing some parameters of the ventilation system (e.g., branch resistances). These concepts are introduced based on the test results from tubing networks to bring attention to these important characteristics of ventilation systems.

The value of Alabama's nonfuel mineral production in 1984 was $409.8 million, and established a new record high for value of nonfuel minerals in the State, at 13.4:% over the previous high of 1983. Output of nearly all nonfuel minerals increased; phosphate rock was one of the exceptions, with no recorded output in 1984. Cement, crushed stone, lime, sand and gravel, and clays were the major commodities produced in Alabama. Alabama led the Nation in the production of crushed marble; was second in bauxite; third in fire clay and kaolin; fourth in bentonite, ferroalloys, and dimension marble; fifth in masonry cement, lime, and recovered sulfur; and sixth in portland cement. Alabama ranked 22d in the Nation in value of nonfuel minerals produced.
