Sinter mixes of three iron ore types were prepared with a range of water contents in a laboratory investigation. The mean diameter of the granulated mixes and the void fraction of beds of the mixes were determined experimentally. Pressure drop measurements over a range of flow rates were made in a laboratory permeameter with pressure tappings at several depths in the bed. The Ergun equation was applied to the results to determine the shape factor of the granulated mixes. The pressure readings down the bed were used to estimate the local void fraction in the bed using the Ergun equation and the calculated granule shape factors and it was found that there was a decrease in void fraction with depth in the bed. The significance of this and the variation of the shape factor values with the amount of water used for granulation is discussed in relation to the strength of granules of the sinter mixes.

Fully mechanized mining technology, with a large cutting height in thick coal seam, has been developed to be large-scale, mechanized, and intelligent. Furthermore, it is also superior to other mining methods because it operates more efficiently and has higher recovery rates of coal resources. Dongpang coal mine (located in north China) is one of the largest coal mining productions in Hebei province. It is significant because it is the first set of coal mines in China to adopt fully mechanized mining technology that has large cutting height potential. When looking at the coal seams of deep mining, specifically in the mine No. 2612 where the working face is 4.5–6.5 m cutting height, the coal walls have low stability due to the way the coal seam fluctuates in a large working face. This paper adopts mechanical analysis, numerical simulation, and field observation research methods to control the rib fall of coal walls in a coal mine. By adopting research methods that analyze the mechanical characteristics of face roof, we are able to conclude the main roof structure of the masonry seam stability criterion in overhead mining with large cutting height. This is done through employing the numerical simulation method, which helped to determine the main factors that influence the rib fall of a coal wall and weighting factor. Through field observations, we discovered the technology method to relieve, control, and mitigate rib falls of coal seam in a coal mine. We also discovered methods that would ensure the smooth mining of the working face of the mine by strengthening the bolting and grouting reinforcement methods used to improve the working face of stope surrounding rock conditions. This paper discusses research results that enrich the stope wall rock control method by expressing how fully mechanized mining technology, with a large cutting height, is meaningful to solve the complex conditions of rock fall caused by thick coal seam.

Since so many different curves have been published for the solid solubility of zinc in aluminum, it seems desirable to definitely establish the correct curve by two or more independent methods. The curve published in part I1t was based entirely upon X-ray measurements because the other methods employed at that time were not satisfactory. The present paper (the seventeenth of this series on high-purity aluminum alloys) describes the determination of the solid solubility of zinc in aluminum by the measurement of electrical resistivity at temperature and by microscopic examination. Since the publication of our part I in 1932, an investigation of the solubility relations in the aluminum-zinc system has been reported by Schmid and Wassermann2, who obtained their solubility results from lattice-parameter measurements on heat-treated and quenched specimens. The diagram that they published is shown in Fig. 1. In this investigation they also found by X-ray measurements that the parameter of the gamma phase changed continuously with zinc content and at such a rate that it would be identical with that of the beta phase at 60 atomic per cent zinc. It was concluded therefore that the beta and gamma phases, from the point of view of structural relationship, are one single phase. They also suggested a gap of immiscibility between 270" and 350" C. The complete boundary in this region could not be determined satisfactorily by the method employed and therefore was not shown in their diagram. Aluminum-zinc Alloys Materials Used.—Electrolytically refined aluminum3 was used in preparing the alloys for the work reported in this paper. Blast-induced rock mass displacement can have a significant impact on ore loss & dilution. The mischaracterisation of the grade boundaries both prior to, as well as a result of blasting can lead to significant financial losses on account of ore loss and dilution. Ore dilution occurs when waste material is miscategorised as ore and sent for processing or stockpiling, diluting the run of mine head grade and recovery. Ore loss takes place when valuable mineral is miscategorised as waste and sent to the waste dumps, thus never being processed and recovered. Extensive research has been conducted at the University of Queensland over the last fifteen years to understand the impact of blast movement on ore loss and dilution. Recent outcomes of this research have developed innovative tools and techniques to measure and model blast movement. These techniques have been implemented at Ahafo gold mine in Ghana to understand blast movement dynamics and to implement solutions to reduce blast-induced ore loss and dilution. These solutions are validated through controlled trials and have been incorporated into site standard operating procedures to sustain the benefits.

Pyrophyllite is a naturally occurring hydrous aluminum silicate with the molecular formula SiO,,AI,,(OH), or, as more commonly expressed, the oxide formula A120,~4Si02~H20. Pyrophyllite is rarely found in deposits as the pure mineral and is often intimately associated with quartz, sericite, kaolinite, and diaspore. These associated minerals, to a large degree, help determine the most appropriate commercial application for a given pyrophyllite ore. Structural similarities plus the generally soft platy nature of pyrophyllite has in the past caused it to be included with talc in applications and production data. The Minerals Yearbook, published annually by the US Bureau of Mines (USBM), still reports on talc and pyrophyllite together, although admitting that they do not share the same uses. Pyrophyllite has also at times been considered a clay mineral because of its structure and chemistry. The refractory properties of pyrophyllite have been known for nearly 200 years, but it has only been in the past 60 to 70 years that a variety of applications have been developed to exploit the unique characteristics of this mineral. Worldwide, pyrophyllite is a component of refractories, whiteware, foundry mold dressings, pesticides, paint, plastics, rubber, cement, fiberglass, and soap. Historical Overview The most salient refractory features of pyrophyllite are its low coefficient of thermal expansion, high thermal conductivity, low moisture expansion, and good resistance to corrosion by molten metals and basic slags. One of the first recorded uses of this mineral was as firebrick in Japan in the early 1800s. This followed its discovery in 1797 on Mount Omotoyama at the site of the present Mitsuishi mine. In addition to firebrick, sawn blocks of ore were used for carvings and in the manufacture of slate pencils and signature seals. The Mitsuishi mine is still one of Japan's largest. By the mid-1800s, refractories were being made in Japan from roseki (a pyrophyllite-bearing ore) for the construction of metal melting furnaces. The mineral did not get its name until 1829 when R. Herman, testing a sample of supposed talc from the gold-quartz veins at the Berezovo deposit in the Urals, showed that it was actually an aluminum silicate and designated it pyrophyllite. This name was derived from the Greek pur for fue and phullon for leaf, in allusion to the effect of heat in causing separation of the laminae in foliated varieties (Mellor, 1927). The exact date of the discovery of pyrophyllite in the United States is uncertain, but it is believed that the talc and soapstone deposits noted in an 1827 report on the geology of the slate belt of North Carolina were actually pyrophyllite occurrences (Olmstead, 1827). Pyrophyllite was first used in North Carolina on a local basis in the early 1800s. Blocks were sawn and cut for use as stove linings, mantels, chimneys, fireplaces, and gravestones. This was the material of choice because it did not shrink when heated, but cut easily and hardened as it weathered. Pyrophyllite crayons were sold commercially by local gold miners for steel marking and as tailor's chalk from about 1800 until 1922. It was during this period that pyrophyllite was discovered near the town of Hemp (later renamed Robbins), NC. The large quantity of scrap resulting from the sawing of crayons at this deposit prompted the construction in 1921 of a grinding plant. The ore scrap was ground to fine granules and sold to asphalt producers to prevent shingles from sticking together. By the mid-1930s, milled pyrophyllite from North Carolina was also being successfully utilized by the ceramics industry in whiteware for its low cost and ability to shorten firing time. Also during the 1930s, pyrophyllite was first used in kilncar furniture in the United States. Canada was another early entrant in the pyrophyllite business. Mining at the Foxtrap deposit on the Avalon Peninsula of Newfoundland began in 1904, with ore shipped to the United States. Production from this deposit was mostly sporadic in the ensuing years until 1956 when mining began for shipment and captive use in US tile manufacture. This production has remained continuous and still essentially captive to the present. The Foxtrap deposit is currently the sole commercial source of pyrophyllite in Canada.

Study has been carried out to apply fly ash as a high strength, water-resistant precast construction material through geopolymerization. Experiment results show that the working conditions such as water content, the concentration of NaOH, curing temperature and curing time, significantly affect the mechanical property of geopolymer matrix. Through optimization, an above 100 MPa compressive strength has been achieved with the geopolymerization products. Water soaking tests show that the geopolymerization product has a very high water resistance without losing noticeable compressive strength even after a one month soaking time. To elucidate the geopolymerization mechanism, microscopic techniques such as SEM/EDS and XRD are also applied to investigate the microstructure, the elemental and phase composition of geopolymerization products. The findings of the present work provide a novel method to apply fly ash as a high strength water-resistant precast construction material. INTRODUCTION Geopolymerization is a process of obtaining a polymeric structure from aluminosilicate by dissolving aluminosilicate sources in a strong alkali (NaOH) solution and condensation of free [SiO4] and [AlO4] tetrahedral units (Davidovits, 1985 and 1988; Duxson et al, 2005; Xu et al, 2000, 2002). After being cured at an elevated temperature for a specific time, the geopolymerization product shows a greatly increased compressive strength. Therefore, the product can be used as construction material such as bricks and road pavement. It provides a very promising method to apply aluminosilicate sources such as fly ash as a construction material for a sustainable development. Fly ash is a main industrial waste which needs to be carefully impounded because of its potential impact on environment. Many efforts have been tried to utilize fly ash as construction materials substituting Portland cement because of the following reasons. First, fly ash is a silica/alumina rich aluminosilicate source, which makes the specific material an ideal source for the geopolymerization process. Secondly, the particle size of fly ash is usually very small (< 50 microns) and it saves a lot of energy consumed during the production process of cement for grinding. Thirdly, fly ash is an ideal source for geopolymerization because it is reactive to alkali even at a mild temperature. In the past twenty years, many studies have been carried out on the geopolymerization of fly ash to a make construction material. However, there are some disadvantages associated with the conventional methods of treating fly ash (Palomo et al, 1999; Perera et al, 2007; Temuujin, et al, 2009; Hanjitsuwan et al, 2014). First, in most of the proposed geopolymerization methods, a salient amount of sodium silicate has to be added. It therefore makes it complex whether the achieved mechanical strength of geopolymerization products is due to a real geopolymerization process between fly ash and alkali or just largely the solidification of metal silicate in air at an elevated temperature. Secondly, the authors have noticed that when the geopolymerization product is soaked in water, the solution pH increases sharply and the products will lose its compressive strength gradually in water. Thirdly, the compressive strength of the geopolymerization product as reported is usually less than 50 MPa.

Energy storage and power averaging are attractive concepts for mining machinery and could have far-reaching implications. The purpose of this program was to: ? Identify truly feasible concepts, ? Identify advantages/disadvantages, limitations, and constraints, ? Evaluate feasibility based on today?s technology, ? Identify anticipated safety problems, and ? Provide the designer with a comprehensive literature base. Concepts evaluated include flywheels, high energy batteries, gas charged accumulators, inductive storage, capacitive storage, springs and counterweights, thermal, closed cycles, internal combustion engines, trolley systems, and hybrid systems. A comprehensive reference index is provided. Included is an appendix containing abstracts of the pertinent literature.

THE QUARTETTE Mine near Searchlight, NV, a mine that first operated in the 1890s, could begin processing ore again by September. Jetco Enterprises Inc. plans to work through the tailings and ore close to the surface followed by plans for an openpit mine. It is one of at least three new mining efforts in the region, the Associated Press reported. Another is north of Searchlight, with yet another across the Colorado River in Arizona, east of Bullhead City. Gold mining is rare in southern Nevada. The area generally lacks the rock type that contains gold deposits. Restrictions on federal wilderness areas and protections for the desert tortoise also play a role. Gold veins in the region are generally small and erratic in length and height, Bill Durbin, a geologist and chief of southern Nevada operations for the Nevada Division of Minerals told the Associated Press. L.R. Tad Tinnell, president of Jetco Enterprises, has long eyed the mine. From 1993 to 1995, he explored and drilled on the property, which was still owned by Searchlight Mercantile.

In the course of the Bureau of Mines investigation relative to the causes, behavior, and control of anthracite-mine fires, attention was directed toward the correlation between the temperature of oxidation and the gaseous oxidation products in the range of temperatures between 100° and 350°C4/. These tests, made on a high-grade anthracite to determine the amount of oxygen consumed and the mounts of carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide, hydrogen and methane evolved when air was passed through samples of the anthracite at various elevated temperatures, showed that the gases evolved and their relative proportions vary with temperature, constitute a means for determining the probable temperature of the anthracite, and thus permit detection of incipient heating beers dangerous fire hazard exists. As the relationships mentioned are affected somewhat by the amount of previous oxidation of the coal, it was deemed desirable to know to what extent they might vary owing to this cause. It was also considered desirable to have a means for estimating the extent of oxidation from the gas analysis, as this would permit a more accurate estimate of probable temperature. Finally, it seemed desirable to know how much the composition of coal might vary over an extended period of oxidation, since this was previously suggested5/ as a possible means for estimating the probable maximum oxidation temperature to which a sample of coal had been subjected.

Laboratory tests were performed to obtain a quantitative description of the effectiveness of sodium sulfate (Na2SO4) for removing copper from molten iron and to determine the effectiveness of Na2SO4 on actual auto scrap. The tests were conducted on induction melted heats of iron averaging 0.58 and 1.50 percent initial copper and on cupola-melted auto scrap containing 0.45 percent initial copper. The Na2SO4 was added in powder form in amounts ranging from 2.9 to 43.8 percent of the weight of iron being treated. The data showed that copper removal for the various Na2SO4 treatments followed a similar trend, regardless of the iron composition that was tested. The equation Y = 1 - e-3.23x approximately reflects the relationship between copper removal and amount of Na2SO4 added, where Y is the fraction of copper removed and x is the ratio of the weight of Na2SO4 added to the weight of metal treated. Copper removals ranged from 3.3 to 74.5 percent and reductions down to less than 0.10 percent final copper were achieved in the auto scrap. Copper removals were generally accompanied by sulfur removal, and initial sulfur contents ranging from 0.10 to 0.20 percent were reduced to as low as 0.02 percent. High temperatures and long slag reaction times tended to induce copper and sulfur reversion from the slag, but, generally, the Na2SO4 treat¬ments were effective up to approximately 2,820° F with reaction times not exceeding 7 minutes.

The vibro driver/extractor is a machine that grips to a pile and vibrates it up and down. When the vibrating pile is lowered into the ground, all soil around the pile begins to vibrate. A vibrating pile breaks the friction between the pile and the soil, thus allowing it to penetrate the ground. A vibro is usually operated by hoisting it into the air with a crane and then placing it onto the pile. The vibro has hydraulic gripping jaws that are controlled from the ground. Once the operator has successfully lowered the vibro onto the pile, the jaws are closed and locked onto the pile and operations can begin. Please see the drawing below: [ ]

Powerful mining systems typically generate high-level noise that can damage the hearing ability of miners. Engineering noise controls are the most desirable and effective control for overexposure to noise. However, the effects of these noise controls on the actual hearing status of workers are not easily measured. A tool that can provide guidance in assigning workers to jobs based on the noise levels to which they will be exposed is highly desirable. Therefore, the Pittsburgh Mining Research Division (PMRD) of the U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) developed a tool to estimate in a systematic way the hearing loss due to occupational noise exposure and to evaluate the effectiveness of developed engineering controls. This computer program is based on the ISO 1999 standard and can be used to estimate the loss of hearing ability caused by occupational noise exposures. In this paper, the functionalities of this software are discussed and several case studies related to mining machinery are presented to demonstrate the functionalities of this software.

Thallium is not significantly removed from mining influenced water (MIW) through conventional treatment in hydroxide precipitation plants. We experimentally investigated modifications to hydroxide precipitation schemes to concurrently remove thallium. Our goal was to determine cost effective and efficient hydroxide precipitation process modifications for thallium removal. Strategies for removal targeted multiple mechanisms including sorption, co-precipitation and/or oxidation of monovalent thallium. Modifications were tested in batch and included oxidant evaluation and the role of manganese. Removal of thallium was enhanced by the addition of permanganate as well as oxygen by aeration. In addition, contact with retained solids and the initial manganese concentration played an important role in the extent of thallium removal observed. This paper reports on our findings and discusses the implications in the removal of thallium with minor modifications to the hydroxide precipitation process.

The Martha deposit is an economic giant epithermal gold deposit, with mined and unmined resources of more than 218 000 kg (7 Moz) Au. The Au-Ag, base metal sulphide-bearing quartz lodes in the Martha deposit form an extensive braided pattern within hydrothermally altered andesite wall rock. There are five main quartz lodes: 1.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Martha, 2.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Welcome, 3.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Edward, 4.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Empire, and 5.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Royal. &nbsp; Information from historic mine plans and reports has been used to determine the depth distribution of economic ore within the Martha deposit. Economic ore (average of 10 g/t Au) in the Martha underground mine was at a maximum width and strike length between a vertical depth of 160 and 350 m. Below this depth the quartz-sulphide lodes continue, but the grade declined to sub-economic grades (&lt; 4g/t Au) at about 575 m depth and economic ore shoots were localised, mainly on the hangingwall side of the lodes. Samples from exploration drill holes indicate that this decrease is associated with a depth zonation from electrum-bearing Zn-Pb-Cu-Ag sulphide ore (average 10 g/t Au) to sub-economic (&lt; 2 g/t Au) electrum-poor Zn-Pb sulphide mineralisation.

Durante a solidificação de ligas metálicas, o produto fundido se contrai, o qual provoca o surgimento de espaçamentos vazios na interface metal/molde chamados de “gaps”. Estes gaps causam o aumento da resistência térmica influenciando em toda a cinética da solidificação. A transferência de calor durante a solidificação depende do conhecido parâmetro chamado de coeficiente global de transferência de calor ( hg). Este parâmetro é representado pela equação do tipo: hg =C.t-n, a qual indica que a eficiência térmica na interface metal/molde decai com o tempo. Muitos parâmetros podem influenciar o coeficiente global de transferência de calor (hg), neste estudo, os percentuais de Sn em ligas do sistema Al-Sn são analisados (10,20,30 e 40%Sn). Portanto, o principal objetivo deste estudo é propor uma relação matemática que descreva, para o sistema Al-Sn, a evolução hg em função do teor de Sn. The identification of the major subsidence areas in the Eastern Kentucky Coal Field has been made to distinguish the subsidence phenomena on the basis of geographical location. Further, this identification process is based upon selected critical geological, topographical, and mining features in the coal fields. The proposed identification of the regions is derived from a comparison of the subsidence potential in a particular area. The most likely severe subsidence areas are compared to those with the probable low subsidence severity. The combination of certain geological and mining parameters involved allows for the derivation of a classification of the subsidence potential.
