B. C. Burgess-—Prior to hearing this paper presented at the San Francisco meeting, I travelled by car from Yuma, Ariz., across south-central California and up through the San Joaquin Valley. After hearing the paper I returned by the coast route to San Diego then along the Mexican border to Yuma. The striking feature of these trips, related to this paper, was the dry river and creek beds at a time of year not the dry season. Contrasted with this was the wasteful use of water in irrigation canals and laterals. Poland says "at least 90 pct of the ground water pumped is used for irrigation." That being the case, it would appear that first consideration should be given to conservation of this use. Probably a small part of this is actually reaching the plants. Some measure of this loss between pump and crops would be revealing. Methods that might be employed to reduce this loss are pipe lines and spraying of some crops such as the banana planters are using in Central America. "INCO Limited operates eleven under-ground mines in the Sudbury area. The mines are located on the rim of the Sudbury Basin, an oval with the axis in the range of 27 km and 60 km. The ore dips to at least 3000 m below surface. The ores are mined primarily for nickel and copper. Total ore production from underground is in excess of 55 000tonnes per day.Over 40 surface fans have been installed since the late 1960s. All of the fans are adjustable pitch, axial flow units. A major factor influencing ventilation design in the last 30years has been the introduction of diesel equipment underground. Volumes per fan have ranged from 60 m3/sec. to 330 m3/sec., with motors from 100 hp to 2500 hp.Fans of the axial flow type have been commonly used for main fan installations at Canadian mines for many years. The standard arrangement has been to mount these fans horizontally, i.e. with the fan shaft and the long axis of the housing horizontal. This is a natural arrangement for an underground fan, but for a surface installation, a vertically mounted fan has definite advantages.The surface area taken up by a typical vertical fan installation is generally about one quarter that of a horizontal fan of the same capacity (Rutherford, 1957). This is not a problem with isolated fans and fat surface out crop sites, but where the installation is to be near existing buildings, or where there are poor surface soil conditions, space and cost considerations greatly flavour vertical fans."

The working experience of the Zinc Smelter, Debari, Udaipur with process modifications and iron control practices is described in detail in this paper. Most of the modifications were made at different times as part of capacity enhancement campaigns that led to distinct advantages, thereby increasing both zinc production and recoveries. This smelter came into existence in 1968 with a humble beginning of producing 18,000 metric tonnes (MT) of zinc per annum, using the conventional batch hydrometallurgical roast-leach-electrowinning technology. Zinc production capacity was increased stepwise to 45,000 MT, 49,000 MT and 59,000 MT, by making suitable process modifications and adopting new technologies, particularly in the leaching section. During these modifications, the process of iron separation as Moore cake was also changed to jarosite cake production. At present, jarosite is being disposed in a secured landfill at the Zinc Smelter, Debari (ZSD) and as Jarofix at the Chanderiya Lead Zinc Smelter (CLZS). As a result of subsequent in-house performance improvement and debottlenecking campaigns, this smelter could achieve further increases in production. Zinc production for the financial year 2005-06 was 81,000 MT.

The phenomena of concentric arrangement of minerals in rock-masses, generally known as " orbicular structure," have of late received much attention from investigators. Lawson, of the University of California,' has described the orbicular gabbro at Dehesa, San Diego county, Cal. Kessler and Hamilton, of Stanford University, working independently upon the same subject, published their descriptions,2 giving also a list of many other localities in Europe and America where orbicular rocks are found, adding copious references to the literature of the subject.

During the early 1960s, the advent of self- advancing longwall roof supports triggered serious consideration by Bethlehem management to introduce the technique of longwall mining at one of our central Pennsylvania coal mines. Although longwall mining was initially justified as a means to cope with the severe roof conditions at our Mine 32 (Watson, B., 1971), the result of the endeavor has been a consistent and reliable level of coal production, first from Mine 32 and then later from Mine 33, over a period of fifteen years. Longwall production from the Cambria Division has been the mainstay of the low volatile coal required by Bethlehem Steel for steel production. Let us review the events that led to this accomplishment, as well as where we stand today.

Mining activities belong to human history, they are lost in the mists of time. They usually impact on large portions of the territory, both directly (exploitation areas and logistic activities directly related to exploitation) and indirectly (exploited material handling, processing and storage areas). As a result, at the end of mine life cycle, dismissed areas usually cannot be directly re-utilized without efficient and well addressed rehabilitation actions. Main goal of the proposed approach was to analyze the results obtained when a set of procedures, based on the collection and the analysis of remote sensed data, is developed to evaluate the effect of rehabilitation of land contaminated by extractive industry activities and to perform a monitoring and registration of the environmental impact of such operations by the application and the integration of modern information technologies, as Earth Observation (EO) and Geographic Information Systems (GIS). The study was developed in the framework of the EU-Asia program of the European union (EXTRACT-IT Project-Contract No: CN/ASIA IT&C/006 (89870): Application of Information Technologies for the sustainable management of Extractive industry activities) and it was addressed to three different dismissed mine areas in India, Thailand and China, respectively. The results, in terms of methodologies selected, strategies applied and results obtained, are described with particular reference to Fuxin coal mine area in China.

In a systematic study, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) evaluated seat designs in low- and mid-seam shuttle cars during production operations at two underground coal mines in southern West Virginia. The purpose was to support, with additional data, earlier findings that NIOSH ergonomic seat designs (featuring viscoelastic foam padding and lower-back support) may help reduce health risks to operators of coal mine shuttle cars. Eight shuttle car operators evaluated seven seat designs (one already in use in each vehicle and five NIOSH designs) relative to perceived and measured whole-body vibration (WBV) exposure (including vehicle jarring/jolting) and discomfort. Operators’ perceptions using a visual analog scale (VAS) and questionnaire ratings were compared with International Standards Organization (ISO) 2631-1:1985 fatigue-decreased proficiency (FDP) limits and measured WBV levels on low- and mid-seam shuttle cars. Objective and subjective data results indicated that NIOSH seat designs (with added adjustability, lower-back support and improved seat padding) performed better to reduce vehicle jarring/jolting levels and that shuttle car operators favored them over existing seat designs. The NIOSH low- and mid-seam shuttle car seats showed 45 to 77 percent better performance in FDP and 9 to 60 percent better performance overall in operators’ ratings. Considering the VAS results for low- and mid-seam shuttle cars under no-load conditions, operators rated the level of jarring/jolting 18 to 89 percent lower with the NIOSH seats. Reductions in measured vehicle jarring/jolting were 19 to 46 percent for the three-directional vector sum accelerations relative to the existing seats on the low- and mid-seam shuttle cars. Questionnaire responses indicated that operators for both shuttle car models rated NIOSH seat designs as more comfortable overall. Vehicle operators most frequently suggested adding armrests to improve the seats on the mid-seam shuttle car. A suggested improvement for the low-seam shuttle car was to make the seat a better fit for the operator compartment, which would enhance clearance between the operator and vehicle controls and allow for better seat adjustment and operator visibility.

The Coeur d'Alene Mining District of northern Idaho is remarkable for its number of large ore bodies and for the amount of its historical production of lead, zinc and silver (Fig. 1). Since veins were first discovered in 1884, more than 127 Mt (140 million st) of ore have been produced from narrow, high-grade veins. Mining continues at the Lucky Friday, Galena and Sunshine mines (Fig. 2). All have been in production for decades. At these mines, more efficient mining and exploration techniques have reduced costs while adding significant new reserves. Even the old Bunker Hill Mine, where ore was first found in 1875, continues operation on a limited basis, partly involving production of world-class pyromorphite specimens. Until recently, the Coeur Mine was also a profitable silver producer. Other large producers have included the Star-Morning, Hecla, Page, Standard-Mammoth, Hercules and Gold Hunter mines (Fig. 2). The first deposits were discovered by prospectors who spilled over from the Murray gold mining district, 24 km (15 miles) to the north. The Bunker Hill Mine was founded the year after the first veins were discovered. Bunker Hill has now operated for more than 100 years. Production includes 2.3 Mt (2.6 million st) of lead, 1.1 Mt (1.2 million st) of zinc and 4.1 kt (132 million oz) of silver. Total district production through 1996 (Springer, 1997) amounted to 7.3 Mt (8.1 million st) of lead, 3 Mt (3.3 million st) of zinc, and 34.5 kt (1.109 billion oz) of silver. This record establishes the district as the largest recorded producer of silver in the world, while also yielding major quantities of lead and zinc. Only Potosi, Bolivia, may have produced more silver, although records are unclear. Despite the district's longevity, historic production and current activity, the published literature on the district lags behind with regard to recent concepts of district geology. The most recent comprehensive US Geological Sur- vey (USGS) bulletins (Hobbs et al., 1965; Fryklund, 1964) are dated. Much research in the last half century has been short-lived or geographically restricted because the district is large and its geology is complex - and even this research tends to remain unpublished. "The south access road to San Francisco’s Golden Gate Bridge, known as Doyle Drive or Presidio Parkway, needs to be replaced. Built in 1936, it is the primary highway and transit linkage through San Francisco between counties to the north and south. The roadway is tucked into the natural contours of the Presidio and the Golden Gate National Recreation Area, one of the nation’s largest urban parks.The old steel truss structure will be replaced by a new concrete cast-in-place bridge. The foundation design of the new bridge is based on drilled mono shafts below each bridge column. Most shafts required large diameter permanent steel casing installed under strict vibration limitations since several historic landmarks are near the project alignment. Malcolm Drilling decided to use the largest oscillator in the world to install the piles.The area occupied by the Presidio is generally hilly, sloping down northwards to San Francisco Bay. In the western half of the project route, two bluffs rise steeply to about 80 ft (25 m). The bluffs are separated by a valley 60 ft (18 m) deep and 1,500 ft (457 m) wide, which is spanned by the old and new bridge. Overburden soils in this valley are made up of artificial fill, slope debris, ravine fill and Colma Formation, a fine to medium-grained sand unit with clay beds. The Bay Muds encountered in the project area are typically soft clayey silts, becoming medium stiff with depth.The basement rocks underlying the overburden belong to the Franciscan Formation, described as shale, sandstone, serpentine and greywacke, it is extremely variable in hardness, fracturing and weathering. The material can vary from very hard to very soft, can be slightly to very intensely fractured and almost not weathered, to totally decomposed within relatively short distances both laterally and vertically. Rock strength can vary from too weak to be tested to serpentine layers with unconfined compressive strength of 15,000 psi (103MPa) or higher. Groundwater levels in the area are typically no more than 10 to 20 ft (3 to 6 m) below the ground surface."

Standard tellurium analytical procedures were modified to obtain the greater sensitivity needed to support a survey of tellurium resources by the Bureau of Mines. Resulting volumetric and spectrophotometric methods for determining tellurium in all types of tellurium-containing materials are described. Sample decomposition and preliminary separations of interfering selenium, gold, and silver are the same in both procedures. The volumetric method is applicable to samples containing a minimum of 10 parts per million of tellurium, In this method the tellurium is reduced to elemental form, and the colloidal suspension is titrated with 0.01 normal iodine solution. The weight of sample for analysis, from 0.25 to 10 grams, should be selected so that the sample contains 0.1 to 5 milligrams of tellurium. To insure accuracy, duplicate samples should be run and the results averaged, particularly on samples of low tellurium content: The limit of determination is 0,001 percent tellurium, which is equivalent to 0.1 milligram of tellurium when using a 10-gram sample. The spectrophotometric method is particularly applicable to low-tenor materials containing from 0.5 to 50 parts per million of tellurium. Up to 10 gram samples are required for making accurate determinations in the low-concentration range. The sample used should contain between 5 and 100 micrograms of tellurium. The turbidity of a colloidal suspension of tellurium prepared from such a sample is determined in a spectrophotometer .t at a. wave-length of 440 millimicrons, and this value is compared with those of standard samples containing known amounts of tellurium.

Despite the use of warning alarms to alert miners to the backward movement of large mining equipment, miners still are injured too frequently in backup accidents. Currently approved backup alarm technology consists of continuous sounding alarm systems. New technology has developed a warning system that initiates an alarm only if there is an object close behind the vehicle. This advancement eliminates constant exposure to the alarm because a warning is given only in case of a potential collision. Adoption of this development can improve safety and reduce damage, especially for front-end loaders (FEL's). It will also eliminate a source of nuisance noise in urban and residential areas. This Bureau of Mines report describes the general characteristics of infrared (IR) light, ultrasonic wave, and Doppler radar technology as used for backup alarms, and reviews the testing of the most promising detection devices.

The first bulletin (269) 3 in this series, which appeared in 1932, compiled the entropy values then available for the elements and in-organic compounds, results being listed for some 150 substances. Elaborations and revisions followed in 1936 (272) and 1941 (280), when over 500 usable entropy values were tabulated. The present bulletin constitutes a further elaboration and revision. The accumulation of data since 1940 has been marked, and 800 entropy values now are available. The present bulletin also contains all the pertinent explanatory matter that appeared in its predecessors. Thus, it retains the same dual purpose of assembling the available values of the entropies at 298.16° K. of the elements and inorganic compounds and giving enough explanation of methods of calculating entropies to make the results comprehensible.

Limestone is the most widely used of all racks and is essential to a great many industries, including tae building trades, highway construction, metallurgy, agriculture, end many chemical and manufacturing enterprises. It occurs in some form in every State and is produced in thousands of quarries. Production in 1930 exceeded 134,000,000 tons. It has more numerous and more diversified uses than any other rock. This paper is designed to furnish general information on the various branches of limestone quarrying and their economic importance. Brief reference is made to dimension stone, and a more complete discussion follows of the uses, requisite qualities, quarry methods, grid processes of preparation of crushed and broken limestone. Investigations over several years have disclosed that the principal manners of occurrence of shuttle-car injuries are in order: 1. Victims in contact with roof or crossbars. 2. Victims in contact with ribs or timber legs. 3. Victims falling from, or jerked from, shuttle cars. 4. Victims in contact with overhanging brows or protruding pine for pin timbers, or water lines. 5. Contact with persons or collisions with parked equipment. 6. Victims injured by roof falls or falling timbers caused by knocking out roof supports with shuttle cars. 7. Victims injured by runaway shuttle cars. 8. Victims injured while loading or unloading timbers or other materials from shuttle cars. These recurring types of shuttle-car accidents reflect the physical conditions of the working sections, certain safety deficiencies in shuttle-car maintenance and design, and unsafe practices by operators.

"New contracts for 65 million long tons of coking coal valued at over $900 million, over the next 15 years, herald the rebirth of Alberta's coal industry. The industry is optimistic that export orders may reach 20 million tons per annum by the mid-1970's. Coal will be extracted from underground and surface mines and it is expected that the total labour force will double from the present 1,200 men within the next two years. Ali the health hazards associated with coal mining are likely to be encountered and it will be incombent on the Provincial Department of Health to specify the standards which relate to health and environment where no such standards have previously existed. This paper examines some of the problems which are being encountered in setting up an environmental health program and reviews the practicability of environmental monitoring methods, with special reference to respirable dust."

INTRODUCTION THE electrical system associated with the mining development of the Hudson Bay Mining and Smelting Company, Limited, at Flin Flon, Manitoba, may be conveniently divided into three main parts, namely, the Island Falls power plant, the transmission line, and the distribution systems at the mine and metallurgical plants. For a description of the Island Falls power plant and the transmission line, the reader is referred to the paper, to be presented at this meeting, by R. W. Davis and M.F. Huffaker (1). The transmission line and sectionalizing combinations are shown diagrammatically in Figure 1. The present paper deals with the distribution systems at the Flin Flon mine and metallurgical plants. THE FLIN FLON DISTRIBUTION SYSTEM In the high-tension sub-station at Flin Flon, each incoming 110 kv. line is provided with manually operated, gang-type disconnecting switches. Each line is connected to Canadian General Electric type F.H.K. 39-60B-F.2 T.P.S.T. 110 kv. 400 amp. oil circuit breakers, each provided with M.K.4 centrifugal motor-operated closing mechanism. Gang-type disconnecting switches are installed on each side of incoming line breakers, and a complete ring bus system is formed through station tie breaker, which is' further provided with gang-type disconnecting switches on either side. The?bus tie breaker is of Canadian Westinghouse design, type G.22B, 110 kv., 400-amp., solenoid-operated. All three breakers are provided with bushing-type current transformers, and the two line breakers are further equipped with bushing-type potential devices. Oxide film lightning arresters (121 kv.) are installed on each incoming line and are located outside the station. Each line is further provided with interlocked gang-operated ground disconnecting switches. All disconnecting switches are mechanically connected to auxiliary switches, which provide pilot service to indicating lamps in the remote-control room, located in a separate building.

UTAH has enormous deposits of high-grade bituminous coal. The United States Geological Survey estimates that there are 13,130 sq. mi. of land in Utah known to contain workable coal and these extensive fields contain 196,000,000,000 tons of coal. Growth in population and development of industry in the intermountain and Pacific coast regions will in time give Utah a place with the great coal producing states of the country. Even today, faced by adverse conditions in competition with cheap fuel oil from southern California, water-power throughout the western states in general, and comparatively high freight rates to its distant markets, the Utah coal industry is notable in many respects. In recent years, Utah has led the United States both in the percentage of its mines in class 1, mines producing more than 200,000 tons a year, and in average production per man per day, which was 6.01 tons in 1921. The Bureau of Mines substantially reduced shale degradation in a coal mine by two spray coat applications of a water-base epoxy sealant. More than 12,700 square feet of passageways were treated, and in 18 months only one failure occurred. This failure was due to improper spray application, Material costs averaged 13 cents per square foot, and labor costs were 7 cents per square foot. Labor included moving all materials into the mine, the setup time for each of the areas coated, and application of coatings.
