When addressing Germany’s resource supplies, we need to distinguish between those domestically available and imported ones. Resource extraction ostensibly competes with the designation of protection areas. However, the parallel existence of wildlife and plant life, and operations in the areas used for resource extractions is continually underestimated. The European Commission has compiled guidance documents facilitating the extraction of resources from protected areas. With regard to resource productivity, the market appears to be the appropriate instrument for minimising resource consumption. Policy makers are now called upon to create a legal framework leading to a consensus accepted by society.

Waste treatment in the mining industry is by no means a new problem to this field. In a sense, the entire process from ore to finished product is one of waste treatment - the separation of a relatively minor quantity of desired component from valueless material. Where it has been necess-ary or economical to practice conventional waste treatment or pollution control methods, such as dust collection, water recovery from tailings, or impounding of residues for future treatment, this has been done. Generally the containment of hazardous pollutants such as arsenic and cyanide also has been followed in modern times. But it is only recently, with the public outcry for the elimination of all forms of pollution, "that the industry has been forced to solve what often appears to be a myriad of difficult and costly waste treatment problems, or be faced with the alternative of closing down the operation. It is the objective of this paper to describe new as well as conventional approaches to these problems, specifically as might be applicable to liquid-solids separation methods. Host wastes in the industry are present either as solutions or slurries, or can be most advantageously handled by conversion to this form, such as in scrubbing noxious gases and dusts with water. Separation of the solids and purification of the aqueous effluents are, therefore, often the principle problems.

To meet increasing demand of coal, underground mining is largely being replaced by the exploitation at deeper horizons and with greater complexities. The exploitation-proposition may be below not-to-be-disturbed surface properties or below water-bodies, posing a constant threat of inundation. Also, the mounting pressures to limit the adverse impacts on the environment bring the extraction-undertaking to face more challenges. An understanding of subsidence-mechanism and a rational quantification of subsidence parameters is a requisite herein. This paper presents such pragmatic quantification, validated at mine-sites in India. In comparison, better productivity, conservation and safety is ensured in this approach.

India produces about 70 Mt/a (77million stpy) of coal ash (fly ash and bottom ash) from burning about 200 Mt/a (220 million stpy) of coal for electric power generation. The average ash content is 35%. In contrast, the United States produces about 70 Mt/a (77 million stpy) of coal ash from burning 800 Mt/a (880million stpy) of coal for power generation. Its average ash content is less than 10%. In 1998, GAI Consultants Inc.(GAI) embarked on a federally funded, multiyear project to assist the government of India in solving its growing coal-ash management problem.

"The Kidd Creek concentrator is looking actively for alternative technology as means of reducing operating costs in their concentrate handling section. The use of pressure and vacuum filters to eliminate the multiple hearth dryers would have the most beneficial effect. The dryers which constitute the greater portion of concentrate drying costs consume about 35,000 m3 per day of natural gas.After the evaluation of various filters by Kidd's technology group, it was clear that, because of the low final moisture requirements of 5.5 to 6% H20, few filters were able to achieve this target economically. Lately attention has focused on the Andritz hyperbaric filter. Testwork has shown that target moistures can be achieved with an appreciable reduction in operating cost.1.0 INTRODUCTIONThe Kidd Creek Concentrator is located 28 kilometers east of Timmins, Ontario. The ore is hauled by the Kidd Creek Railroad to the concentrator where it is milled to produce separate copper and zinc concentrates.Projected concentrator feed for 1991 is 3,750,000 tonnes of ore grading 3.3 % Cu and 4.7 % Zn. The concentrate production is expected to be 458,080 dry tonnes of copper concentrate at a grade of 25.7 % Cu and 265,020 dry tonnes of zinc concentrate at a grade of 54 % Zn.Currently, there is active investigation toward cost reduction through implementation of new technologies. One area which has been extensively evaluated is the concentrate dewatering and drying section. In that section, the multiple hearth concentrate dryers represent the largest source of operating costs, mainly through maintenance and energy costs (electricity and natural gas). The replacement of these dryers with filtration technology that could produce the required concentrate dryness would represent substantial savings.In September of 1990 filtration testwork carried out by Andritz Ruthner showed that Kidd Creek copper and zinc concentrates could be filtered to below 6 and 8 % moisture respectively. In late May 1991 the laboratory testwork was duplicated on siteand one month later a 5 m2 pilot filter was tested on site. Based on the pilot test results, an economic evaluation was performed. It indicated that a reasonable payback could be realized if hyperbaric filters were to replace the existing concentrate drying section."

A novel, highly sensitive, and reproducible nzetlzod for the determination of hydrogen in solid materials is presented. The procedure requires equilibration of the specimen with hydrogen gas, rapid quenching, and hot vacuum extraction of the dissolved gas with subse-quent quantitative analysis by mass spectroscopy. Good linearity is obtained for the Arrl~enius plots of the investigated metals. The advantages in the use of this method over that of Sieverts aye discussed. The solubility data for copper are in reasonable agveewzent with a considerable number of other inuestigations, wllile those fov silver are considerably lower than previously reported. The first known solubility data for gold are presented. Solubility equations and heats of MUCH of the data which are available on the solubility of hydrogen in various metals and alloys have been obtained by the classical Sieverts method.' The method involves the measurement of a decrease in pressure of a gas in a calibrated system, and the calculated contraction in volume is attributed to the solubility of the gas in the metal sample. The procedure requires several corrections, such as the solubility of the gas in the container walls and the diffusion of the gas through these walls, as noted by Steacie and .Johnson2 and others. In addition, errors may be incurred due to reactions between metal surface impurities, such as oxides, and the saturating gas. The precise calibration of the measuring system where large thermal gradients exist can present additional difficulties. Also, accurate volumetric measurements of small quantities of gas are difficult. Many of the objections to the Sieverts method were overcome on solid materials by Ransley and ~eufeld,~ who first saturated the metal with hydrogen and performed a subsequent extraction and measurement of the gas by chemical means. Eichenauer and pebler4 and Eichenauer, Kiinzig, and pebler5 measured the diffusion coefficient and solubility by following the degasification of a sample as a function of a rate of increase in pressure in a previously evacuated system. Here again, however, the procedure involves many of the corrections of the Sie-verts method. The present investigation deals with the solubility of hydrogen in solid copper, silver, and gold by a technique which eliminates many of the aforementioned corrections and possible errors. This procedure requires equilibration of the specimen with gas, rapid quenching, and hot vacuum extraction of the dissolved gas with subsequent quantitative analysis by mass spectroscopy. EXPERIMENTAL Two completely separate systems were employed to accomplish first, the equilibrium saturation of the sample and second, the extraction of the dissolved gas. Saturation Apparatus. The saturation apparatus, illustrated in Fig. l, consisted of a vertically mounted quartz tube with a three-way valve for vacuum or hydrogen near the top and an outlet near the bottom leading to a butyl phthalate seal. The bottom end of the tube was terminated with a joint accommodating an O-ring sealed "Asco Stirring Gland" (The Emil Greiner Co.). This gland facilitated movement of the thermocouple without introduction of air into the system. The upper portion of the tube (above the furnace) was water-jacketed. Bortech’s BoreClad corrosion protection system will be displayed at MINExpo. BoreClad is an innovative system for inside diameter cladding of nozzles, tubes and other circumferential devices. Pressure vessels, mud pumps and other mining equipment must be protected from corrosive caustic chemicals. Usually manufactured from mild steel, they can be clad with a protective material, such as stainless steel, to provide corrosion resistance. However, most welding processes leave voids where corrosion can damage the base metal. BoreClad provides void-free welds by combining gas metal arc welding with automated feed and rotation of chuckable parts. Workpieces of up to 915-mm- (36-in.-) long with a 460-mm- (18-in.-)swing can be clad with stainless steel, Iconel or other exotic metals. "This paper summarizes work carried out at the Dome Mine to mechanize the mining of narrow veins of less than 1.5 m in width by the introduction of new mining methods and specifically designed electric LHDs.Extensive mining trials have been conducted using sublevel blasthole, modified Avoca, and resuing mining methods. The introduction of the Microscoop and the Jarvis Clark remote, radio-controlled scooptram has increased mucking productivity.As a result of this work, additional narrow vein stopes are now being prepared for production. In the future, narrow vein stoping wil lprovide a greater percentage of the total mill tonnage.IntroductionThe Dome Mine, which is owned and operated by Dome Mines Limited, is located at Timmins, Ontario. Production has been continuous since 1910 and in 1984 was increased from 1814 to 2721 tonnes per day.At least six distinct ore types have been recognized at the mine. In general, these orebodies can be broadly categorized into wide and narrow deposits. The wide deposits are approximately lenticular in shape and vary in width from 10 m to 40 m. The narrow orebodies consist of quartz and quartzankerite veins ranging in width from a few centimetres to six metres. The average dip of the veins is 65 degrees.Since the I970s, mining activity has been largely concentrated in the wider orebodies using highly productive open sublevel blasthole and mechanized cut-and-fill stoping methods. With the demise of shrinkage stoping in 1975, investigations were initiated to develop new mining methods and introduce LHDs - truly designed for narrow orebodies. These investigations resulted in test trials of the sublevel blasthole, modified Avoca, and resuing mining methods. Consultations with equipment manufacturers and suppliers led to the development of the Jarvis Clark remote, radio-controlled electric scooptram and the introduction of the France Loader Microscoop."

Risk analysis is an important step in the design of rock slopes in open pit mining. Risk is defined as the product of the probability of slope failure and the consequences of the failure, and is generally evaluated in terms of safety and economic risk. Most of the risk analysis done at present is based on the use of limit equilibrium (LE) techniques in evaluating the probability of failure (POF) of the slopes. The approach typically makes use of full Monte Carlo simulations of the limit equilibrium models, with all uncertain variables randomly varied. The number of required simulations is generally over a thousand, at times as high as 20 000, in order to produce statistically valid results of the POF. Such an approach is clearly not practical when using numerical modelling programs dueto the high computational effort required. This paper explores the impact of using numerical modelling instead of the traditional LE techniques in evaluating the probability of slope failure. The difference in the overall assessed risk, in terms of economic impact, for the mining operation is then evaluated. With numerical models, approximate methods are used in the calculation of the probability of failure instead of full Monte Carlo simulations. This paper will use a method called the response surface methodology (RSM) for estimating the POF from numerical analyses. Simple slope models were used to verify the accuracy of the RSM method by comparing the results with those obtained from full Monte Carlo simulations. It is shown that there is good agreement between the POF values computed using full Monte Carlo simulation and those obtained using the RSM method. Finally, the use of numerical modelling in the assessment of risk is shown to bring a significant difference in the result compared with that from LE methods. One of the reasons for the difference is that LE models tend to underestimate the failure volumes and hence the consequences of slope failure.

O cenário tecnológico brasileiro passa por transformações profundas, a indústria em geral faz parte desse panorama, dentro dos segmentos indústrias temos a automobilística, onde novas tecnologias são apresentadas e as demais aprimoradas, nesse segmento temos as ligas não ferrosas de alumínio, que com adição de elementos de liga se transformam em ligas de alta performance, assim como as ligas de aços. Elementos de maquinas de ligas de alumínio sofrem modificações em suas propriedades mecânicas com a variação de temperaturas, deformação, composição química entre outras. O presente trabalho objetiva a comparação das propriedades mecânicas dos resultados experimentais da liga Al-0,05%Cu-[0,35-0,45] %Fe-0,22%Zr e de simulações computacionais de chapas para aplicação na indústria automotiva. A liga foi obtida a partir do Al-EC modificado por inserções de ferro na faixa de [0,35 - 0,45] % e 0,22%Zr. Posteriormente, após a solidificação da liga em molde unidirecional horizontal, os lingotes foram transformados em perfis de 3,0mm e submetidos a ensaios mecânico de tração. Na parte de simulação computacional as propriedades mecânicas foram medidas usando chapas finas de aço e chapas mas espessas de alumínio, as propriedades obtidas nos ensaios reais, foram utilizadas como paramentos das simulações das chapas de alumínio, objetivamente a comparação das propriedades mecânicas com os resultados experimentais da liga estuda. Os resultados dessas análises permitem avaliar que a liga Al-0,05%Cu-[0,35-0,45] %Fe-0,22%Zr pode ser aplicada em componentes estruturais na indústria automotiva que trabalharem estaticamente na forma de fuselagem de automóveis de passeio ou veículos de trabalho com boas propriedades mecânicas.

Fine powders normally exhibit, to a more or lesser extent, some ability to participate in dust explosions. Zinc dust as used in the extractive metallurgy of zinc, is not known to be a reactive powder in the industry. No evidence could be found in the literature where zinc dust was involved in an explosion or explosive type event. On 3 May 2002 an explosive type incident occurred at Zincor in Springs, South Africa, which led to a fatal accident. Given the history of relative benign behaviour of zinc powders under conditions conducive to dust explosions, it was decided to share the information of this incident with industry in an effort to prevent similar incidents. Therefore, the purpose of this paper is to describe the incident that occurred at Zincor, discuss the major findings, report on corrective actions, as well as publish the results of subsequent tests that were performed to determine the conditions under which zinc powder exhibits explosive characteristics.

DURing the summer and winter of 1918 eleven standard rigs were erected in the United Kingdom to test the petroleum prospects of- ten structures, eight of which were in England and two in Scotland. By the fall of 1921 ten of the wells were completed; the remaining one, the D'Arcy in Scotland, was stopped some months later. The tests were deep ones, five of the wells being 4000 ft. or more, the rest varying in depth between 1810 and 3918 ft. The total footage drilled was 40,047 ft. The holes were put down with standard or cable tools purchased in the United States (except the boilers). The larger sizes of casing, 10-in. and above, were also from America, while the smaller sizes were secured in Scotland. The Hardstoft well in England found a small production of high-grade oil and the D'Arcy well also encountered what is reported as a favorable showing at a depth of 1810 ft. The Werrington and West Calder wells had to be abandoned on account of drilling difficulties. The Apedale well encountered great thicknesses of ash in the Carboniferous and had to be abandoned on account of depth. The results might be summarized by saying that of the ten structures drilled upon, two yielded encouraging showings; three cannot be considered as having been adequately tested; and five produced dry holes, although in some of these small oil showings and gas were met. The total cost of the work amounted to about half a million pounds sterling, which sum includes the cost of all equipment, subsequently sold by the government. The work, under the superintendence of V. L. Conaghan, took place for the most part in the period immediately following the war—a period of high prices, labor and transportation difficulties, and unsettled conditions generally; factors tending to retard the work and affect the costs. Aços multiconstituídos têm aplicações voltadas principalmente para o setor automobilístico. Isso porque esses apresentam uma boa combinação de elevada resistência, ductilidade e tenacidade. A elevada resistência desses aços é devida a martensita e aos finos feixes de ferrita bainítica, enquanto que a tenacidade e a ductilidade são atribuídas aos filmes finos de austenita retida presentes entre os feixes. Esses filmes contém uma maior concentração de carbono em relação aos blocos de austenita retida. Uma consequência é que estes se tornam mais estáveis mecanicamente e termicamente. Dessa forma, foi realizada a avaliação do desempenho mecânico de um aço tratado isotermicamente abaixo de Mi e revenidos a 400°C/1 h. Os resultados dos ensaios de impacto mostraram que quanto maior a fração volumétrica da austenita retida maior é a energia absorvida, independente da morfologia desse constituinte.

Spurred by a variety of factors, coal flotation is making headway among the preparation plants of West Germany. The author gives some statistics on German coal flotation plants and information on the properties of the feed and quality of the derived products. Types of machines and reagents used, dewatering practices, tailings disposal, and thickening operations are covered. There is special emphasis on the many-sided problems that confront German coal preparation engineers. The coal mining industry of West Germany is concentrated in three coalfields: the first on the Ruhr and the Rhein rivers, the second on the Saar river, and the third near the frontier between Germany and the Netherlands, around the towns of Aachen and Erkelenz. The total run-of-mine production of these three coalfields amounts to 736,000 tpd which come from 145 collieries. There are 121 washeries, 43 of them with a flotation plant. The total throughput of these 43 washeries is 280,000 tpd, out of which 26,000 tons (9.3 pet of the washery feed coal) are cleaned by flotation. The capacity of the individual flotation plants varies within relatively wide limits, the average being 40 tph and the capacity of the largest flotation plant being 120 tph. During the last few years, the number and size of flotation plants have been steadily increasing, although flotation must be looked upon as an expensive and rather complex cleaning process. The considerations which have led to the widespread application of flotation may be summarized as follows: 1) In making coking coal, it is seldom possible to add uncleaned fines to the coke oven charge, as their ash content is too high. If, however, the ash content of the fines is reduced to a maximum of 7 or 8 pet, they can be admixed to the washed and crushed small sizes without difficulty. This means, naturally that revenue is increased since the price of coking fines is always higher than the price for dust or uncleaned wet fines. 2) To prevent silicosis and pneumoconiosis, water infusion and spraying of the coal are practiced much more today than ever before. As a result, moisture content of run-of-mine coal has markedly increased and the washery feed coal contains more and more slurry instead of dry dust. The price of slurry, how- ever, is very low, and in many cases it is impossible to sell filtered raw slurry with a moisture content of 20 to 25 pct and, at the same time, 20 to 25 pct of ash. Reduction of the ash content of these slurries improves the possibility of dewatering them and, in this way, also enhances the marketability of this product. 3) The new severe laws and regulations against pollution of air and rivers make it necessary to de-dust coal better than in the past and to reduce the quantity of the waste water from coal preparation plants and their solids content to a minimum. 4) Even if there were no compulsory reasons to clean the fines, flotation will often lead to an increase in the overall yield. Although not the only application, it appears that the treatment of coking fines is the primary field for the flotation process in coal preparation. It must not be overlooked, however, that a series of arguments may be advanced against flotation: 1) Flotation is an expensive process because, in addition to the cleaning operation itself, the dewatering of the froth and the disposal of the tailings is very costly. 2) Operation of a flotation plant requires well trained personnel. 3) Filtered froth has about a 20 pct moisture content and, therefore, if mixed with the cleaned small coal it causes an undesirable increase in water content of the coke oven charge. For this reason it is necessary to take additional measures for dewatering washed small coal and this, of course, entails additional expense. 4) Disposal of flotation tailings involves very difficult problems, particularly in the highly industrialized regions. In the irradiation of ore particles by microwave energy preferential absorption of this energy occurs in minerals having specific dielectric properties (Bradshaw, 1999). This leads to a selective heating of the various components of within the ore particle matrix. The result is a differential thermal expansion of such components and the resulting induced stresses become ideally concentrated at mineral grain boundaries (Kingman et al., 2000). Dependent upon the relative composition of absorbent, opaque and reflective components this may lead to enhancement of the inter-granular fracture of the ore particles in the initial comminution process (Fandrich et al., 1997). The potential is thus a greater proportion of free mineral grain within the fractured ore particle that may lead to improvement in subsequent mineral separation processes. As the composition of the ore dictates the result of such a treatment (Kingman et al., 2000) it is essential to evaluate the response of each ore sample on an individual basis. This paper reports on results obtained from two ore samples: the one being the zinc ore from the Black Mountain mine (South Africa) and the other a pre-concentrated sample of handpicked cobalt?copper mixed oxide ore from the Gecamines (DRC). The equipment and methods used to simulate the comminution of the samples and evaluate the level of the value liberation will be described along with the results obtained. Using King (1975), Kanellopoulous and Ball (1975), and Gungor and Atalay (1998), a comparison between the behaviour upon microwave irradiation of sulphide and mixed oxide ores leads to conclude that while the technique (i.e. microwave irradiation) is appropriate to the zinc sulphide ore, it does not seem to lead to exceptional results for the oxide.

In response to concerns over greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and an imposed cost in some jurisdictions, many mining houses have committed to reductions in their GHG emissions. However, mining faces particular challenges in this regard, notably from increasing strip ratios. Furthermore, mining activity around the globe is not expected to decrease in the foreseeable future as mineral demand is driven up by the aspirations of rapidly-developing nations. Novel approaches will thus be needed if any reductions in energy consumption and GHG emissions of mining are to be achieved.This paper presents some directions for the mining industry to pursue in reducing their GHG impact, focusing on the difference that blasting methods can make. Importantly, large productivity and revenue gains can also be realised from these methods.Key directions considered here include optimising resource recovery and quality through:reducing coal damage and loss from throw blastingrecovering thin coal seamsproducing cleaner coal with less dilution.Blast design can also significantly improve the productivity of surface mining by:improving muck pile shapingimproving mine equipment productivityimproving scheduling.We show how a particular blasting method can eliminate coal loss in overburden throw blasting and can lead to large increases in coalmine profitability. Thin seams that were previously wasted can also be recovered with this method. Furthermore, the method has been implemented to combine several separate drill and blast cycles into a single cycle, leading to productivity gains.An illustrative example is given to show how increased coal recovery can increase revenues and more than offset any potential GHG emissions liabilities. FuRnace-men of the present day agree very nearly as to the best cooling-devices for the protection of blast-furnace hearths and boshes, and the best location of the cooling-system in the brick-work for the maintenance of favorable furnacelines throughout the blast. The replaceable bronze and copper plates are practically faultless; and there seems to be no reason why a furnace-hearth and bosh should not be held in good condition, by intelligent management and the use of replaceable plates, for a period several times the length of the average blast of to-day. While furnace-men have taken these .precautions to protect the hearth and bosh beyond the life of the lining, the portion of the lining above the mantle has been partly protected by some and wholly neglected by others. Some would not construct a furnace without mantle-plates, and others would not construct a furnace with them. In most cases, furnace-men have either trusted to Providence or to the bosh-plates for the continuance of favorable working-conditions above the mantle, and the prolongation of the life of the lining; consequently furnaces are constantly blown out for repairs to the lining, or for relining, when the hearth and bosh are in good enough condition to last through another blast.
