The Port of Shekou is situated at Shenzhen Bay on the east bank of Lingding Ocean. Its coastline is about 6 km long and the water depth near the shore is Favourable. Across the bay is the ' New Territories " of Hong Kong. The port is at a distance of 22-23 seamilesaway from center of Hong Kong and 80 seamiles to Huangpu Harbour of Guangzhou, its highway links with Shen-Guang Highay. Since 19 79 China Merchants Group of the Transportation Department, began to set up Shekou Industrial Zone, the port has been developing and flouri­shing in business. With 15 large or small berths in all, the present portline is 2600 m, and the annual cargo throughout is over 3,000,000 tons and the annual passenger traffic is about 2,000,000 persons. Equalling a medium-scale seaport, it has been officially approved as an oceangoing transit port by the ministry of Transportation. The construction of Shekou port is chara-terized by the self-collected funds and the short construction period. In view of this, the optional plan of the port structure must serve the requirements of simplicity in struture, economy in mate­rial and speed in construction. That accounts for the most application of the sheet piling type to the port in Shekou. Once the project was approved, the cons­truction started. Only within an average period of 7-8 months, a deep water pier was completed and put into operation, which covered series of processes from exploration, designing, tender for con­struction to completion.

Roof warring signals from eleven underground coal mines (principally in the Pittsburgh seam) were studied and analyzed. The character of individual acoustic warning signals is shown to be dependent on spectral distribution of energy. Reverberation tires (pulse decay rates) were found to be usually between 0.1 and 0.5 seconds. Listening tests were conducted to assess the miner's ability to discriminate speech and roof talk signals in noise and in quiet, with and without ear protectors and with various levels of hearing loss. The ability to detect roof talk is shown to be generally degraded while wearing car protection in quiet, although, if car protectors are worn only when required by high noise levels, the ability to detect roof talk will be preserved at its maximum.

As with the slogans of Madison Avenue, catch words or phrases frequently become topical. Much is heard these days of the confrontation between governments of developing countries and international mining capital. In actual fact, sadly there are too few cases of anything as positive as confrontation because such an action at least signifies a dialogue which may begin badly but end up fruitfully. Instead we have in general a climate of indifference and fear with the mining companies of note marking off most of the developing world as being unsafe for investment. There is an unreal air to this damaging impasse. The common sense and objectivity which are prerequisites of positive action are lost in a swirling cloud of mythology, embraced largely by governments. Let us examine some of the dangerous misconceptions.

Taking the Presidential chair of the Australasian Institute of Mining Engineers, my first duty is to thank you for the high honour and position you have conferred on me. A position entailing the highest compliment the Institute could bestow on any of its members, and one which I feel my inability to properly fulfil, inasmuch, as you have men in your ranks of the highest scientific training residing on that great continent where the head quarters of the Institute is established, while my engagements here will not permit me leaving this colony but for a very limited period.About six years ago, during the time the mining boom was at its height, there came to this colony from England, Germany, and South Africa, several mining engineers, who in conjunction with the mining engineers here, formed an Institute which we soon found we were not able to maintain. The mining boom gradually died away, and many engineers have left the colony to find employment in other parts of the world. We made overtures to your Iqstitute to take us under your wing, which you were kind enough to do, and the outcome is that you have come over 1200 miles to hold a meeting in New Zealand. The paucity of members residing in this colony does not admit of a large attendance; but we heartily welcome you to our shores and hope you will enjoy a holiday visiting some of the principal mining centres and exchanging ideas, which not only improves our minds, and widens our field research, but also tends to lead to further economic improvements in the extraction of metals the earth contains...

This report, summarizing the results of two studies sponsored by the Bureau of Mines, presents information on the types of mobile machines used in surface coal mines in the United States, and the amount of noise to which miners are exposed. Data consist of a calculated value of the probability of noise overexposure caused by specific equipment. These data are extrapolated to estimate the number of overexposed operators. Bulldozers were identified as the major contributors to noise overexposure, and the report presents results of a Bureau-funded program on the feasibility of providing retrofit noise control on bulldozers.

Since the mid-1970s, samples of airborne and waterborne fibrous particulates have been collected in the area of the Northshore Taconite Ore Processing Facility by the Minnesota Department of Health (MDH), the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency (PCA), and the University of Minnesota. Indirect sample preparation has consistently been used although other aspects of the sampling methods and sites have varied and analytical procedures were altered over time as more accurate and precise microscopy methods were developed (i.e., phase contrast optical microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy with energy dispersive spectroscopy). In the mid-1970s, levels of airborne fibrous particulate in the Silver Bay area averaged from 0.00030 to 0.03 f/ml. This level was significantly greater than levels of similar particulates in the St. Paul, MN area, although two of the Silver Bay sampling sites, considered individually, did not indicate levels of fibrous particulate markedly different than that seen in St. Paul. More recent sampling data (i.e., 1990?2001) indicate mean concentration of airborne fibrous particulates (amphibole-like fibrous particulates) of 0.0020 f/ml with a range of values from 0.0001 to 0.0140 f/ml. Such levels are not significantly different from those seen in other non-urban environments in the US and Europe. Concentrations of fibrous particulates in water samples were higher in the mid-1970 when iron ore tailings were being deposited in Lake Superior, but since the tailings have been deposited on land waterborne levels of fibrous particulate in the Beaver River have remained relatively constant averaging in the range of 7.5 MFL. This level is only slightly in excess of the current EPA drinking water standard for fibrous particulates. Review and consideration of this data is important in determining the potential health risks associated with airborne and waterborne fibrous particulates in the areas of the Northshore Taconite Ore Processing Facility. © 2007 Elsevier Inc. This paper describes and evaluates a method that the Federal Bureau of Mines used to determine the ultimate composition of the organic material in 10 samples of oil shale from the Mahogany zone of the Green River formation in Colorado and Utah. Since interest has centered on the Mahogany zone, the richest section of the deposit, these 10 samples were chosen to provide a broad representation of this zone with the objective of obtaining generally valid ultimate composition values. The most probable organic composition for the Mahogany zone and the 95-percent confidence limits for each component average (in weight-percent of organic material) are: Carbon 80.5 ± .4 Hydrogen 10.3 ± .1 Nitrogen 2.4 ± .1 Sulfur 1.0 ± .1 Oxygen 5.8 ± .5 As only minor variations in composition were observed, the organic material of this particular bed is quite similar over a wide geographic area.

The safety and stability of construction structures are often affected by blast-induced waves. Investigating the generation mechanism of shear wave (S-wave) during blasting is important, because it has a strong effect in blasting damage. In this paper the generation mechanism and verification of S-wave was studied analytically and numerically. Under the finite velocity of detonation (VOD) of cylindrical charge or the compression wave (P-wave) communicating with the interface of different media during the propagation, the generation mechanism of S-wave was analysed. Propagation of blasting wave in cylindrical charge was simulated with the elastic model, and the generation of S-wave induced by finite VOD was proved. To compare with different numerical methods in simulating the generation of S-wave, the blasting process of instantaneous detonation was simulated by using the elastic model, elastic-plastic model and smoothed particle hydrodynamics and finite element method (SPH-FEM) coupled model. Results demonstrate that the S-wave could not be found in middle section of the charge if the elastic model is employed. But when using elastic-plastic model and SPH-FEM coupled model, the generation of S-wave could be verified. Under the SPH-FEM condition, the amplitude of S-wave is larger and the arrival time difference between P-wave and S-wave is closer to theoretical results.CITATION:Gao, Q D, Lu, W B, Hu, Y G, Chen, M and Yan, P, 2015. "Abstract After noting the importance of standardization for piles, the European system is described (execution, tests and design, etc.). Some important aspects of Eurocode 7 are outlined (like the role of pile load tests). Finally, the calculation methods in the recent French standard for the design of piles following Eurocode 7 are shortly addressed.Importance of standardization for piles Like for other fields of geotechnical engineering, pile engineering is a complex art. For piles, the challenges are particularly numerous and many things must be mastered properly: - the soil investigation must be serious and adequate (for instance, deep enough!);- the choice of the pile type and the assumed behaviour must be assessed in order to reach a safe and economic design of the overall foundation;- the execution itself (construction and/or installation) deserves special attention and must follow strict state-of-the art rules.The geotechnical engineer, in charge of the design of a pile foundation, must have in mind the parameters linked to the variety of soils, of soil conditions and of pile types. A wide range of strong environmental issues are also to be considered: minimum disturbance during the execution processes, long-duration friendliness of the “inclusions” into the ground (to avoid pollution of the soils and waters, for instance) and respect of the neighbouring structures.Pile engineering plays in a world which is constantly moving and progressing: constructions expand in new difficult areas, actions on piles are more and more important, new execution techniques of piles are developed, research into the complex behaviour of pile foundations has no end, etc. Our views on how piles and group of piles really work are constantly evolving!"

The challenge of a Bulk Trucks or Mobile Manufacturing Units (MMUs) manufacturer is to take the objectives of the regulatory agencies and the explosives manufacturers and responsibly design and build MMUs that are safe, compliant, and cost effective without compromising serviceability.

As part of JAGUARS (JApanese-German Underground Acoustic emission Research in South Africa), high-resolution tiltmeters were installed during 2007 at Mponeng gold mine, South Africa, in an attempt to study and understand the risks posed by in-mine seismic events and to subsequently use the knowledge gained to mitigate these risks. In December 2007, an M2.2 event occurred at Mponeng and was detected by the tiltmeters installed. The tilt expected for the M2.2 event is modelled through the use of numerical and analytical tools and utilizing, as input parameters, characteristics of the event such as the rupture area, the amount of slip, elastic properties of the rock, the state of stress before the event occurred, and frictional parameters of the rupture. The calculated tilt values are correlated and compared with the recorded data, and are found to be of the same order. Certain input parameters, such as the initial rupture point, are further constrained by varying them, during modelling, until the calculated and observed tilt values are approximately equal. From modelling, it can be concluded that the rupture point had to be closer to the location of the tiltmeters. In addition, possible locations acting as source areas for the observed aftertilt are determined. Further modelling still needs to be done to quantify the effects of the tunnel close to the tiltmeters and plastic deformation of the rock mass. This report describes the work done to develop a coal mining machine to increase productivity and recovery from thin seams beyond the highwall, in addition to decreasing the miner's susceptibility to to highwall hazards. First, radar transducers were adapted to measure coal thinkness and detect rock and coal interfaces; Then, the radar was incorporated into a cutterhead with steering controls. Next, visual displays were designed to show cutter position in the coal seam, and anticipated change In coal seam inclination. Finally, development of a telemetry system made remote control of the cutterhead possible. Simultaneously, a high-performance extended depth (HPxD) auger machine was designed with an automatic system to handle 600 ft of 36-in. diameter dual spiral flight conveyor sections. A two man crew controls all operations from a weather conditioned cab outside the VDZ, either at night or day time. As a primary mining tool, working 4000 hr/yr (2 shifts/day) recovering 60% of the coal 600 ft beyond the highwall, production to 500,000 ton/yr can be achieved. From time to time interest has been evidenced in transporting coal with water in pipe lines. About the year 1895, United States patents broadly covering a method of pumping coal with water through pipelines were granted to W. C. Andrews. His process was used to some extent in pumping anthracite culm and waste back into the worked-out portions of the mines. About 1905, W. T. Donnely was granted patents relating to pumping anthracite silt away from the breakers. From about 1913 until 1924, a British engineer, Gilbert G. Bell, used a short pipeline to convey coal with water from barges on the Thames River to the Hammersmith Electricity Generating Station, London. Minus 5-inch coal was transferred 660 yards through an 8-inch pipe. Some trouble was experienced with fine coal, which tended to plug the line. Bell made several proposals to transport coal by pipeline overland from the Midlands to London, a distance of about 100 miles, but these were never adopted. This survey is concerned mainly with the problems presented by actual pipeline transportation of coal with water. It is assumed that the coal will have been processed to remove most of the abrasive impurities by conventional methods prior to introduction into the line, and that it has been crushed to the required top size. Dewatering at the discharge end of the line is considered part of the conventional cleaning process. There still remain many pump-performance and behavior of water-coal mixture problems that can be solved only by actual performance tests. It is recognized that the distribution of coal to other than very large users is not changed. Large storage areas would be required to supply seasonal markets. Large users, such as power plants and heavy industries, could be supplied by branch lines directly to the point of use, It is also recognized that pipe lines might not be able to carry a full range of sized coal to meet market demands in many areas.

Tensile data for coarse grained aluminum Polycrystals suggest that the "grain size" effect is not due to dislocations piled up at grain boundaries but rather is primarily a relative size effect due to surface crystals being weaker and less confined. STUDIES directed at interpreting hardening of poly-crystalline metals normally identify their strain hardening properties with those in some particular type of single crystal.1"4 The recent recognition in face centered-cubic metals of a nearly linear stage with rapid hardening occuring at comparable rates for both polycrystals and single crystals, suggested that the same process or processes determine both cases and hence that there exists some justification for the use of single crystals to understand polycrystals. Further evidence for the above view may be found by an approach initiated by Chalmers:5 By using bicrystals of controlled orientation it is possible to begin to assemble a polycrystal and also to study grain boundary effects in detail. In this way it has been found that a single grain boundary affects easy glide but not the subsequent stage II hardening.6 This result suggests that a sensitive way to observe grain boundary effects in polycrystals would be to vary grain size and measure easy glide. As will be seen, easy glide is only possible for coarse-grained samples, and hence the results will serve to fill in the gap in measurements between single crystals and bicrystals on one hand and fine-grained polycrystals on the other. One problem inherent in comparing single crystals with polycrystals is the uncertainty as to what slip systems are acting in a polycrystal. To compare the two types of samples, rates of shear hardeninn---L. on the acting -planes are needed. and these may be computed only if it is known what particular systems are active. The acting systems were examined for a coarse-grained polycrystal and it will be shown that the systems supplying the preponderance of slip can be determined with little ambiguity. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Twelve samples of aluminum were prepared by chill casting into a heated graphite mold, followed by annealing at 635° ± 5°C for 24 hr with an 8-hr fur- nace cool, and finally either etching7 or electropol-ishing.' The samples, with a 7 to 10 cm length between grips and 4.4 by 6.6 mm in cross section, were deformed at a strain rate of about 3 10 -3 . per min in a tensile device which has been described elsewhere.5 The composition was reported by Alcoa as 99.992 pct Al, 0.004 pct Zn, 0.002 pct Cu, 0.001 pct Fe, and 0.001 pct Si; nine samples were deformed while immersed in liquid helium and three in air at room temperature. The stress-strain curve for one of the samples (P-1) deformed at 4.2 "K has been reported previ~usl~.~ This sample was selected for determination of active slip systems. Eighteen of the crystals were examined by optical microscopy to determine the angles of slip line traces and by X-ray back reflection to determine orientation. By this means the slip planes were determined and the resolved shear stress factors for possible slip systems could be computed. Finally each sample was sectioned so that after etching, the number of crystals could be counted for each of ten newly exposed surfaces. The average of these ten values will be termed n, the number of crystals per cross section. Values of 11, varied from 1.9 (nearly bamboo structure) to 12.7. Sketches of typical cross sections appear in Fig. 1. RESULTS AND DISCUSSION: SLIP SYSTEMS 1) Determination of Acting Slip Planes—The stress axis orientation and operative slip planes in eighteen crystals of sample P-1, as determined by slip line traces and crystal orientation, are summarized in Fig. 2. For one of the crystals two planes had a common trace. so that the traces alone did not distinguish which plane or planes were slipping. However it was found that the stress resolving factor for the primary system was 0.386, .while that for the most stressed system in the other plane (indicated bv the dotted arrow) is 0.138. It will be assumed tgerefore that only the primary plane acted. Since the orientations were determined after extending the samples 4 pct, the stress axes may be rotated from their original value by as much as 2 deg in some cases. It is interesting to note that in five crystals only one slip plane acted, in eight two acted, and in five three planes were observed—an average of two slip

This Bureau of Mines report reviews the information presented at the Sixth Mineral Waste Utilization Symposium cosponsored by the Bureau of Mines, U.S. Department of the Interior, and the IIT Research Institute. Environmental scientists and engineers from nine countries participated in the symposium, which was held May 2-3, 1978, at the Chicago campus of IIT Research Institute. The 56 papers presented on the reclamation and recycling of mining and mineral wastes, municipal solid waste, industrial wastes, and scrap metal are summarized herein.

Roof warning signals were studied in 18 mines covering 5 coal seams. The results of this study confirmed that roof talk must be interpreted for each individual mine after all other conditions are present that indicate danger of roof fall. Characteristics of roof talk pulses were studied to ascertain features used in interpretation. Roof talk pulse decay time was found to be typically 0.1 to 0.5 seconds depending on the dimensions of the entires. Time between roof talk pulses was found to correlate inversely with the degree of danger under certain conditions. Roof talk and machinery noise recordings obtained during this study were used for subjective tests of ear protectors in a simulated coal mine noise environment. These tests required a detailed interpretation of roof talk and yielded results with high statistical power. Results of these tests showed that the use of personal ear protectors in high noise levels does not degrade a miner's ability to discriminate speech and roof talk. A training course was developed to encourage coal miners to pro-tect their hearing by proper use of personal hearing protectors.

This report details a study which was designed to assess the effect of retroreflective material on detection and form recognition of workers in the mining environment. Further, the study attempted to determine an optimal configuration of retroreflective material with respect to amount and placement on the body to facilitate detection and form recognition. The study involved a one-fifth scale simulation of the perceptual task found in the underground low seam coal mine. Four different configurations of reflective material were presented in various body positions, common to low coal miners, at three different locations in the visual field, i.e., 10, 25, and 45 degrees from focal line-of-sight. All reflective configurations significantly improve detection and form recognition over configuration (cap only) worn by miners. As the amount of reflective material increased, accuracy also tended to increase. Based on the configurations investigated by this study, the Armband configuration (i.e., refectorized armbands, belt, self-rescuer and battery pack) was determined to be optimum. It is recommended that an actual field evaluation be made using the Armband configuration to establish if simulator results are generalizable to the underground mining environment.

Com o intuito de estudar o sopro combinado através de um modelo físico, similar com convertedor da thyssenkruppCSA 330t, foi utilizada uma análise visual associada a métodos colorimétricos para mensurar a penetração do jato e a melhor configuração de ventaneiras. Com base nesses métodos, encontrou-se a distância banho-lança que reduz o tempo de mistura com menor probabilidade de slopping. A partir dos resultados obtidos no modelo a frio, os parâmetros foram recalculados para a prática industrial.

National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) researchers conducted an investigation to quantify sound levels and to determine the amount of sound reduction provided by engineering noise controls installed in a talc processing plant. Baseline sound level and sound intensity measurements were performed at the plant and the measurement locations were recorded for comparison to post-control measurements. Follow-up measurements were then made at the same locations after the initial noise controls were installed. The plant subsequently decided to implement additional noise controls and the researchers returned to conduct measurements for a final analysis of all noise controls. The most significant results showed a sound level reduction in the main mill area from a range of 93-104 dB(A) down to 90-94 dB(A), and a total sound power level reduction of 21 dB(A) for air classifying mill 3.
