Only recently has it been realized that preferred orientations are common in hot-rolled steels. In a recent paper, N. P. Gossl stated that hot-rolled mild steel exhibits a texture different from that characteristic of cold-rolled steel. No complete study of these hot-rolling textures has been reported using the pole-figure method of Wever. The material used in the work reported in this paper was the same material used by Gensamer and Mehl2 in a recent study of preferred orientations in cold-rolled steel, to which reference may be made for the composition and thermal history of the steel. Automobile-body sheet bar 1/4 in. thick was hot-rolled at two temperatures, 780' and 910' C. (1436' and 1669' F.). These temperatures refer to the temperature of the furnace in which the steel was heated; after each pass the steel was returned to the furnace and held there long enough to return to temperature. Although no accurate method was used to measure the temperature after each pass, it was estimated by color that only a slight drop in temperature occurred. In order to determine the effect of any preferred orientation that might have persisted through the normalizing treatment, one specimen at each temperature was rolled in the same direction as the original working direction and the other at right angles to it. The total reduction in each case was 85 per cent, the specimens having been reduced from 0.250 to 0.0375 in. in five passes. Final cooling was in air. Pinhole reflection photograms were taken of all four specimens, with the rolling direction vertical and the X-ray beam at an angle of 7' with the transverse direction (the transverse direction is defined as that direction in the rolling plane perpendicular to the rolling direction). These photograms, taken with a Mo target at 35 kv., are reproduced in Figs. 1, 2, 3 and 4. It is also the second report in the series to be prepared as a cooperative effort by the Bureau of Mines and the American Association of Cost Engineers. IN 1914, the officials of the Brundred Oil Corpn., faced with the problem of introducing new methods to increase production in the old and nearly depleted pools of Venango County, became interested in the Smith-Dunn (Marietta) process which was at that time being tried out in southeastern Ohio and which was already yielding very encouraging results. A license to use the process in Pennsylvania was secured from the owners of the patents. These patents were later declared invalid. The method was first used in Pennsylvania on a property consisting of about 434 acres, of which 300 are productive, at Hamilton Corners, 15 miles northeast of Oil City, in Cherry Tree and Oakland Townships, Venango County. The producing horizon is the First Sand of the Venango Group. A small oil pool was opened up in this vicinity in 1904. By July, 1916, when the compressed air was first introduced to restore pressure, the production had dropped to a point where it was no longer possible to continue profitable operation. From that time until March, 1927, over 100,000 bbl. of oil have been recovered from the tract. The property is being operated at present by the Brundred Oil Corpn. and Lux. The 1926 production, amounting to 10,650 bbl., was only 400 bbl. short of the maximum reached during any year of the 10-year period that the process has been in operation. Inasmuch as the Hamilton Corners pool is the first one in Pennsylvania in which the Marietta process was tried out, and the one in which it has been longest in continuous operation, considerable interest attaches to the results obtained. Relative fineness is an important characteristic of iron ore balling feeds. It is frequently expressed in terms of the Blaine Number which is determined by standardized permeametry procedures. Inconsistencies in Blaine Number specifications for balling feeds from different sources prompted an investigation of permeability methods. A revised procedure for permeametry tests was developed for use with conventional apparatus that yields an Effective Blaine Number which is similar to the Standard Blaine Number except that it more accurately describes the effective fineness of the actual test sample.

"INTRODUCTION In 1942, Lowry and Junge 3/ reported the results of a statistical study of errors for the proximate and ultimate analysis of coal and coke when made according to the standard Methods of Laboratory Sampling and Analysis of Coal and Coke (D271-42) 4/ of the American Society for Testing Materials. Some of the laboratories that cooperated in the investigation reported difficulty with determination of the volatile matter of anthracite and low-temperature coke. The small number of analyses reported for these particular fuels was considered inadequate to justify definite conclusions regarding the precision of this determination.The investigation described in this report was made at the request of Committee D-5 on Coal and Coke, A.S.T.M. (A. C. Fieldner, chairman), to secure additional information regarding the errors of the volatile matter determination for anthracite, low-temperature coke, and subbituminous coal; the last fuel also gives trouble in this determination, The committee has recognized that the allowable differences between duplicate determinations of volatile matter for these fuels as given in the standard methods are perhaps too stringent and may require revision."

Shafts into coalbeds usually produce the most methane, so the information in this chapter applies primarily to shafts at coal mines. Nevertheless, much of the information is relevant for noncoal mines that have methane in the mine or in the overlying strata. METHANE IN SHAFTS EXCAVATED BY CONVENTIONAL MEANS (DRILL, BLAST, MUCK) [ ] Ventilation. Shafts excavated by conventional means are ventilated with a fan on the surface connected to ductwork that extends down into the shaft (Figure 9–1). This report revises an earlier publication by the Bureau of Mines on tungsten analytical procedures and expands the coverage by including appropriate procedures for the critical impurity elements that commonly occur in tungsten ores and concentrates (13).3 The basic methods described are not original, but many of the modifications to improve reliability and sensitivity were developed by the Bureau. Gravimetric and colorimetric methods currently used for the determination of tungsten in ores, mill tailings, and concentrates are described. Colorimetric procedures are preferred for low concentrations of tungsten, whereas either procedure is satisfactory for moderate concentrations. Conversely, a gravimetric method is preferred for the determination of tungsten in concentrates.

This report summarizes the results of the Narragansett Win Projec't's activities during the U.S. Bureau of Mines (BOM) Phase 1, which was transitional from and which followed the National Science Foundation (NSF) Phase which initiated the investigation of New England's potential roil resource. The 960 sq. mile basin is structural and topographic lowland containing 12,000 to 20,000 ft. of terrigenous clastic sediments of late Pennsylvanian age, and which rests on an upper Precambrian and Cambrian basement. The Rhode Island Formation, which is the coal-bearing unit, comprising the bulk of the Pennsylvanian rocks consists, in order of decreasing abundance, of sandstone, conglomerate, silts tone, shale, and coal. In the NSF Phase, 24 drill-holes yielded 17,900 ft, of core; in the BOM Phase I study, 4 drillholes yielded 2,100 ft. of core. Anthracite and semi-anthracite was encountered in beds Up to 30 ft. thick in widely spaced parts of the Basin. The coal, typically very low in sulfur, and a high ash anthracite, won mined in substantial volumes from 1808 to 1959 from shaft and open lit in Portsmouth and Cranston, R.I., and in lesser volumes in Mansfield, Mass. Currently coal is now being mined in Plainville, Mass. as a fuel in the manufacturing of light-weight aggregate from the same quarry that serves as the source of the rock being processed. The structurally complex Narragansett Basin is now known to have a greater extent than earlier since recent drilling by others (Chapter 2) has confirmed our interpretation that the Basin extended offshore south A Boston. The, Basin also extends into Rhode Island Sound to the south. The geological structure is more complex in the southern part of the Basin than in the northern part. Three episodes of folding have been documented on Aquidneck Island and four episodes of faulting have been demonstrated for the Basin as a whole. Relatively less well exposed rock in the northern part of the Basin, increases the difficulty of recognizing and correlating structural episodes in the northern part of the Basin. The Basin his hewn subdivided into six structural domains which appear to have distinctive structural, metamorphic, paleontological and sedimentological differences that mw assist in isolating important events in the evolution of the Basin and its component parts. The tentative structural model recently developed in POP Phase I has important implications for exploration and mining. In the first and second folding stages the coal is mobilized and thickened in the crests and troughs of folds whose axes are horizontal to subhorizontal. While conventional coal exploration and mining methods are not applicable, great thickening in the crests and troughs of large scale structures, which can he defined by geology, geophysics and drilling, may provide compensating advantages. Bedrock over most of the Basin is 0-50 ft., but thicknesses of glacial deposits up to 150 ft. are present locally. Pro-Pleistocene topographic trends are controlled by structure and rock hardness; Pleistocene deposits aligned to the S. F. are superimposed on earlier trends. The southern part of the Basin is mainly dominated by high grade Barrovian metamorphism and plutonism of Permian age, related to the Alleghanian Orogeny. About 300 sq. miles of the 960 sq. mile Basin has been affected. The remaining 660 sq. miles, in the chlorite and subchlorite zones of metamorphism are compatible with the presence of high quality anthracite and semi-anthracite. Illite crystallinity studies begun in the NSF Phase, have been carried out in the BOM Phase l with important results. About ME of the northern Basin is now known to be in the diagenetic (unmetamorphosed) or subchlorite zone and the remainder in the chlorite zone of metamorphism. Mite studies, probably best recording temperature effects, show a generally progressive increase from the NW corner of the Basin near Plainville, Mass. toward the south and southeast. Reflectivity and coal petrography studies, probably best recording pressure and effects related to shearing, indicate a generally opposite pattern. Thus these methods provide powerful tools for the ultimate solution of problems important to coal exploration for coals of higher combustible volatile content and exploitation of these. Due to the complex nature of the coal, chemical data may not he easily used to determine rank. The coals have been tectonically deformed and mineralized. This deformation plus thermal metamorphism have altered the coals, in some cases by producing natural coke. Brecciated coal is often coated with a secondary depositional carbon. The coals' hydroscopic nature and high ash contents are due to the deformed nature of the coal and the presence of this secondary carbon. The stratigraphy and sedimentology of the coal-bearing Rhode Island Formation is similar to described alluvial fan deposits. The non-geological studies al-low three conclusions to be made: 1. A substantial number of areas have been identified in the Narragansett Basin in which mining could be carried out without undue difficulty from a land use point of view. 2. Substantially more than two hundred instances of past or current- mining activities have been identified in the Basin. Many of those are in areas defined as geologically interesting, and may be advantageous From the point of view of future exploration. 3. The map synthesis technique developed for this contract is successful and may easily be adapted to future exploration in its current form and also in its expandable form dealing with unit measurements of one-tenth mile. We recommend that BOM Phase 2 exploration should accomplish the intent of the Congressional language in House Report No. 95-1251, to continue a substantial drilling and geophysics program: "The Committee expects the Bureau to continue studies involved in ascertaining the extent and quality of low sulfur coal reserves in the Narragansett Basin in New England including necessary drilling and geophysical studies. The knowledge of the extent of such deposits is of great importance to this 'energy pour' area".

This publication summarizes, for potential contractors and other interested parties, the research, development, and demonstration contract projects programed by the Bureau of Mines for fiscal year 1982 (October 1, 1980 -September 30, 1981) under its Minerals Health and Safety Technology program. Contingencies may require that a significant port ion of the program be deferred into fiscal year 1983. The objective of these projects is to provide an ordered and sequenced series of advances toward the Bureau's overall goal of providing the systems technology required to create a healthier and safer working environment for the Nation's mining and minerals processing workers.

The entire production of oil in Ecuador so far has come from the Santa Elens Peninsula, Province of Guayas. Both the shallow fields of the northern and the deeper fields of the southern part of the peninsula have been in constant exploitation, though the former are of doubtful economic value. In Table I herewith, which commences with the total amounts produced by the various companies up to 1940, annual company totals are given for the succeeding years. The figures for 1944 have been partly estimated. Table 2 gives figures on casinghead gasoline. Shell Company of Ecuador (formerly known as Anglo-Saxon) has continued active exploration in the Oriente region east of the Andes, and during 1944 the Company's first wildcat well was spudded in. International Ecuadorean Petroleum Co. (formerly International Petroleum Co., Limited) has pursued an active exploration campaign since the latter part of 1939, and a drilling string was placed in operation about a year later. A second string of tools was added during 1943 and a third a few months ago. Ten wildcats, all dry, have been completed in this period, two wells are drilling at the present time and other locations are on the program. Seven of the wells thus far drilled are in the area between Guayaquil and the Santa Elena Peninsula, one up the Daule River beyond Balzar, one on Puna Island in the Guayas Estuary and one in the northern province of Esmeraldas. Both the present drilling wells are in the Guayaquil-Santa Elena zone. The situation in regard to concessions has changed during the past four years because I.E.P.C. has made its selections from the extensive Daule-Guayas Study Concession, as a result of which large tracts were returned to the Government; because of the expropriation of the holdings of the "Ecuapetrol," a German concern whose acreage has passed into other hands; the Peruvian-Ecuadorean boundary settlement, which has reduced Shell's holdings somewhat; and the transfer of most of the holdings of the Cia. Four companies mined ball clay in four States during2004. They were H.C. Spinks Clay (owned by Franklin Minerals) Kentucky-Tennessee Clay (owned by Imerys),Old Hickory Clay and Unimin. Production was estimated to be 1.46 Mt (1.61 million st) valued at about $56.9 million, based on a preliminary survey of the ball clay industry. In 2003, production was 1.31 Mt (1.44 million st) valued at $56.2 million. Tennessee was the leading producer state with 61 percent of production. It was followed by Texas, Kentucky and Mississippi.

Outokumpu has applied its well -known copper Fl ash Smelling Process also for smelting su1phide lead . concentrates. The lead in the Flash Smelting Furnace slag is recovered by reducing the oxygen potential of the slag in an electric furnace by injecting reductant into the slag bath. A series of tests have been carried out in a 1000 KVA electric furnace? adjacent to a pilot Flash Smelting Furnace. The furnace has been fed continuously with molten Flash Furnace Slag. The feed rate has varied from 0.5 to 3.1 MTPH (0.55 - 3..4 STPH) depending on the feed rate and the quality of concentrate to the Flash Smelting Furnace. The inlet slag contained 15 to 40% of lead and the cleaned slag 1. 5 to 3. 0%. The lead recovery from sol id raw material was tested in the same continuous process by feeding lead calcine into the furnace. Feed rate was 0.7 to 0.95 MTPH (0.8 - 1.05 STPH) and the calcine contained 33 to 34% of Pb. Several reduction agents and procedures were tested. The process proved to be suitable for continuous recovery of lead from solid oxide raw materials.

The Bureau of Mines has investigated the availability of columbium from 19 deposits (3 producers and 16 nonproducers) in 7 market economy countries (MEC?s). Brazil has the largest recoverable columbium resource, posessing approximately 2.39 million metric tons Wmt), or 69 pet of the MEC total (3.47 Mmt). The Western Hemisphere countries of Brazil, Canada and the United States contain 3.14 Mrnt of recoverable columbium or 90 pnt of the MEC total. Columbium recovered as a byproduct of tin mining is not included as part of MEC resources in this study. Currently producing mines are Araxa and Catalao in Brazil, and Niobec in Canada, These three mines have 2.42 Mmt of recoverable resources or approximately 69 pct of the MEC total. It is estimated that these mines, operating at full capacity, could satisfy cumulative MEC demand (based on an annual growth rate of 5.1 pct) for the next 20 yr. The United States is totally dependent upon foreign sources for its columbium supply. The majority of U.S. columbium is imported from Brazil in the form of steelmaking- grade ferrocolumbium. Canada has been the sole source of pyrochlore concentrates since Brazil discontinued exports in 1981. The United States also imports small (but important) quantities of columbium as columbite concentrates from Nigeria and Brazil, as columbite contained in tin slags from Thailand and Malaysia, and as synthetic concentrates from the Federal Republic of Germany.

A full-scale statistically-based on/off plant trial of a new flotation conditioning technology designed to improve fine mineral recovery was undertaken to determine whether the recovery of selected fine sulfide minerals can be increased. The technology is selective for certain sulfide minerals only, including chalcopyrite and sphalerite. The technology has been shown to selectively aggregate the fine chalcopyrite and sphalerite minerals giving increased flotation recovery. In May of 1984, it was decided that Outokumpu Oy would design and build a new nickel flotation mill to process ore from the newly discovered Enonkoski mine in eastern Finland. Since there hart peen a number of successful process charges in the existing mills, the design effort included the study and incorporation of several new developments, including all-autogenous grinding, "flash flotation", lane cell roughing, large cell cleaning and a computer-based, profit optimizing, process control system. The paper discusses the background and results of those studies, and a description of the resulting mill which will begin production in 1986.
