In 1983, open cut coal mining operations were suspended at the Tent Mountain coalmine, located in Alberta, Canada in an area called Crowsnest Pass. Montem Resources (‘Montem’), an Australian mining company, purchased the asset in 2016. They conducted several drilling campaigns and undertook environmental monitoring with the intent to restart operations. In 2020, Montem completed a Definitive Feasibility Study, which indicated a mine life of more than 14 years.

DURING a period extending over about the last two and a half years, the performances of various types of rock drills in use at the mining department of the Zinc Corporation have been recorded as closely as possible. The main objective was the collection of sufficient data regarding internal water-feed hammer drills, when used for the same class of work as the older type reciprocating drill, to enable a decision to be formed on the following points:(1) Whether internal water-feed, hammer drills could efficiently perform the work previously carried out by reciprocating drills without excessive repair cost to the former.(2) If so, was it good policy commercially to eliminate the reciprocating type completely, writing these off together with the accompanying spares, accessories, and solid drill steel, and replacing with internal water-feed hammer drills, with lighter fittings, and the requisite amount of hollow drill steel.(3) What were the best types and makes of hammer drill for different classes of mining work(4) What was the economic aspect of the introduction of the principle of internal water feed to every type of machine throughout the mine.Prior to the strike of workers in May, 1919, Ingersoll-Rand E47 31-in. reciprocating drills had been used for stoping and for the major portion of driving, cross-cutting, and similar work. The accompanying columns and fittings were all 4t in. The drill steel used was solid octagon. Up to 1916 these machines were also used for winzing, after which time jackhamers were more successfully employed. These latter were of the usual types, varying in weight from 40 to' 46 Ib. Ingersoll BCR 430, Holman No. 2 spool valve, Sullivan DP33,. Waugh Clipper 55. These machines were all dry head; the drill steel was hollow hexagon, shanked.

Scanning electron microscope–Mineral Liberation Analyser SEM-MLA can be used to discriminate between hematite/magnetite in iron ores, but achieving backscattered electron (BSE) segmentation between the two minerals is difficult for particles =75 µm using typical preparation and analysis methods for the MLA based on a tungsten filament SEM (Quanta 400) with 25 kV high voltage. Preparing iron ore sample mounts using a slow-speed polishing method, and conducting the experiment on a field emission gun SEM-MLA (Quanta 650) with the high voltage (HV) setting lowered to 15 kV reduces instrument noise and results in very clean BSE images and segmentation. This method requires new X-ray standards to be acquired for each mineral identity at 15 kV because of major changes in the spectra at lower kV. "In slurry balanced shield tunneling, how to ensure the safety of construction and to reduce the influence on the environment has arisen wide attention of scholars both at home and abroad. But now it is still in the stage of experience as to the instability mechanism of the slurry shield tunneling excavation and its stability analysis. Based on the large-diameter model tests and FLAC 3D, the effect of the different waterhead (non-water, 0.9m and 1.1m) on stability of excavation face of slurry balanced shield is investigated, and the stability mechanics is proposed. The results show that: waterhead heights play an important role on excavation face instability features of slurry balanced shield in sandy stratum, Regarding the different waterhead heights, the development mode of the excavation face instability features can be divided into non-water mode, lower-waterhead mode and higher-waterhead mode; soil arching is existed in the process of excavation face instability, the settlement of ground lags behind excavation face failure, the soil arching will block or eliminate the effects of ground settlement; excess pore water pressure need to be considered besides earth pressure and hydrostatic pressure when the supporting force is calculated. INTRODUCTION With the development of the society, for the cities all over the world, the exploitation of underground space has become an important measure to solve the problems about population, resources and environment and an important way to heal the city syndrome and implement the sustainable development strategy of city. Constructing shield tunnel with large diameter is the major trend for development of tunnel construction (Yin, 1999). Instability of excavation face caused by relief of shield soil stress is still one problem that needs to be solved (Xiang, 2001). How to reduce the effects of construction on surrounding environment? How to accurately determine the instability of shield excavation face and to effectively and reasonably select the supporting force? These are the crucial problems which need to be solved during shield construction."

A sequential sampler, based on the Archimedes screw, has been developed by the Bureau of Mines. Its initial purpose was to collect air samples during tracer gas studies in underground mines. However, the basic concept can be applied to other sampling needs, including sampling of liquids. A prototype was built and successfully tested in the Bureau's Experimental Mine at Bruceton, Pa. The simple design makes the sampler inherently durable and low in cost.

A study of subsurface waste disposal in the United States shows that in eight States a wide variety of industrial wastes are being injected into formations ranging in age from Precambrian to Recent. More than 30 wells ranging in depth from 300 to 12,000 feet are used for waste disposal into subsurface formations which include unconsolidated sand, sandstone, vugular limestone, and fractured gneiss.

A complete list of permissible mining equipment, rescue apparatus and gas masks tested prior to January 1, 1925, was published in Bureau of Mines Technical Paper 3761. The present list includes all equipment tested and approved by the Bureau, up to and including January 1, 1926, and supersedes the list issued as Serial 27202 in November, 1925. It covers electric air compressors, coal drills, mining machines, mine pumps, room hoists, switches, electric cap lamps, flame safety lamps, electric hand and trip lamps, flash lamp, methane indicators and detectors, blasting units, storage battery loco- motives, power trucks, self-contained oxygen breathing apparatus and gas masks. The system under which these devices were tested permits the manu- facturer, after his equipment has passed certain tests prescribed by the bureau, to mark his equipment with a seal showing that it has been "approv- ed" by the Bureau of Mines. The tests are designed to insure that the equipment has the minimum requirements for safety in use. The only object of the bureau in making such tests and publishing lists of permissible equipment is to safeguard the lives of workers and to help lessen the hazards of mining.

Laboratory test work on heavy liquid separation of sylvite from halite is reported. Numerous tests were run on sylvite ore sized in the ranges of 4x20 mesh, 10x65 mesh, 8x100 mesh, -8 mesh and -10 mesh with heavy liquids in the range of 2.05 to 2.15 sp gr. From the test results, it was concluded that, with the type of ore under study and a size in the range of -8 mesh, a recovery as high as 90% could be achieved with a product grade of 70% KCl. However, a final product at an acceptable recovery cannot be made with one pass, and the float must either be further processed with heavy liquids or dried and sent to a conventional froth flotation circuit. Potash ores occurring in this country consist essentially of sylvite and halite plus minor amounts of magnesium sulfate salts and montmoril-lonite-type clays. Recovery of potash minerals from evaporite ores in the North American potash fields is accomplished almost exclusively by use of amine flotation. European practice involves froth flotation as well as solution-crystallization processes. Laboratory and pilot plant test work has been reported in Europe and the U. S. on the application of heavy media separation to potash ore beneficiation. Work was probably discontinued because of lack of ore with the required very coarse liberation characteristics (1/8 to 1/2 in. liberation size). Sylvite, with a gravity of 1.99, and halite, with a gravity of 2.17, appear to be ideal for separation by heavy liquids, which are now available in gravities from 1.59 to 2.95. This paper reviews preliminary results obtained from laboratory test work on heavy liquid separation of sylvite from halite. TEST WORK The heavy liquids used in the tests under discussion were chlorobromethane, with a specific gravity of 1.923, and dibromethane, with a gravity of 2.490. These liquids, completely miscible, were combined in the proportions needed to give a mixture having the desired specific gravity. Feed for the laboratory tests was mine-run ore screened to the desired mesh sizes. In conducting the tests, the sample was fed at a constant rate into a stream of heavy liquid and the mixture directed into a small separatory vessel. The float overflowed into a collecting pan while the sink collected in the bottom of the separatory vessel and was removed at the end of the test. Approximately 500 g of feed constituted a charge. Pulp density of the feed was kept low to prevent particle to particle interference in separation. With feed in the range of 8x100 mesh, a pulp density of under 10% solids by weight was found advisable. With coarser feed the pulp density could be carried as high as 15% solids. Time of separation was very rapid. In the case of 4x20-mesh material, separation was effected in 15 to 30 sec; with -10-mesh feed, separation required about 1 to 2 min. SPECIAL EQUIPMENT Since heavy liquids are toxic to varying degrees, all separatory work was carried out in a standard laboratory fume hood. It was noted that complete removal of fumes was not being effected; therefore the hood construction was modified, resulting in a completely satisfactory arrangement for heavy liquid test work. In the interest of safety, details of this fume hood are reported here. Unlike most fumes, heavy liquid fumes tend to settle and flow like water, rather than to rise like a gas. Working on this assumption, a standard water drain was installed in the hood. Across the front of the hood a 1-in. barrier was constructed. In the rear of the hood a false back was installed, with an adjustable sliding door on both the bottom and top of this panel. As shown in Fig. 1, the exhaust fan pulled a vacuum behind the barrier, sucking the heavy fumes from the bottom of the hood. Another addition was the drying box, shown to the right of the hood. This is simply a box covered on top with hardware cloth and connected by a 6-in. inlet to the hood. Sample trays made of fine mesh wire filter screens were found ideal for drying samples. An experimental hydraulic jetting device intended to operate in a 16-in-diam borehole was designed, fabricated, and used to cut coal and simulated coal samples. This device consisted of two 0.107-in-diam nozzles that rotated in a plane perpendicuIar to a 50-inch length of high-pressure tubing. Experi¬ments were also conducted with stationary jets issuing from a single 0.142-in-diam nozzle. Numerous experiments were performed using systematic variations of jet parameters coupled with assessments of cutting rates. These Bureau of Mines tests showed that when operated at 4,000 psi pressure and a 40-gpm flow rate (1) the device can fragment coal up to a distance of 8 feet from the nozzle, (2) 4,000-psi jets cut more effectively than lower pressure jets with the same nozzle diameter, (3) stationary jets do not cut as effectively as moving jets, (4) interkerf breaking occurs when the kerf spacing is less than 2 inches, and (5) if the kerfs are spaced <1/2 inch, the jet is deflected and thereby reduces cutting effectiveness.

Chromium alloys were coated with silicon, alumi-nuw, and boron by pack cementation. None of these simple coatings provided adequate nitridation/oxida-tion protection for a Cr -0.17pct Y alloy substrate as shown by a substantial Increase in the ductile -brittle transition temperature after air exposure for 100 hr at 2100°F. Iron-modified silicide coatings afforded good protection, holding the transition temperature of air-exposed specimens to 350° F compared to 200° F for uncoated unexposed specimens and 800°F for un-coated exposed specimens. Additional attractive cant-binations of modi-tying elements included Fe-mo, Fe-Mo-W, Fe-,Mo-W-Ti, and V-Mo-W-Ti. THE desirability of increased operating tempera-tures as a mcans of improving the performance of ad-vanced air breathing engines has resulted in emphasis on the development of materials with high operating temperature capabilities. Chromium, because of its relatively low density (7.19 g per cu cm), high melt-ing point (3410°F), and adequate strength upon alloy-ing, is a candidate material for turbine buckets and stator vanes of advanced air breathing engines. How-even, chromium is not without severe limitations, the major one being susceptibility to nitrogen embrittle-ment upon exposure to air at high temperatures.1,2 For example, a 25-hr air exposure of a Cr-5 pct W* * All compositions in wt pct. alloy at 2100°F produces a 600°F increase in the duc-tile-brittle transition temperature.&apos; Although dilute alloying with such elements as yttrium, lanthanum, arid thorium3,4 or strong nitride formers5 has been shown capable of reducing nitrogen embrittlement, it is apparent that some additional form of surface protection, such as coatings or claddings, will be required for long time service in air breathing engines. Studies of aluiminide6 and silicide7 coatings and of nickel-base claddingsl on chromium alloys to date have suggested that these protection systems are inadequate. Of the aluminidc systems Studied,6 a simple aluminum and an Fe-Al coating on a Cr-5 pct W-0.1 pct Y alloy showed the lowest air exposure weight gains. However, the air exposures raised the ductile-brittle transition temperature of the coated specimens to above 1600°F from an initial level in unexposed specimens of about 500°F. A second in-vestigation for protection of Cr-5 pct W-0.1 pct Y employed gas pressure bonded alloy foils as protective claddings.1 An aluminized Ni-20 pct Cr-20 pct W alloy plus an unalloyed tungsten barrier layer gave the best performance with air exposure lives based on appearance and weight gains of over 600 hr at 2100°F. "Les Services TMG (Niobec) currently treat a niobium ore in the Chicoutimi area of Quebec. The mineral pyrochlore is present in a carbonatite deposit which assays 5% to 7% apatite.The ore is ground to minus 65 mesh and deslimed at 10 micrometres. Part of the carbonates are floated with a fatty acid emulsion and rejected to the tailings as a first step to ensure the proper conditions for the flotation of the pyrochlore concentrate. The carbonate concentrate is 65% minus 44 micrometres and is composed of dolomite, calcite, 22% apatite and a minor amount of silicates.A laboratory investigation was undertaken to determine the feasibility of extracting apatite from the carbonate concentrate. This led to the development of an economic flowsheet to produce high-grade apatite concentrate. The apatite is depressed with phosphoric acid, and the pH is adjusted at 4.8-5.0 with sulphuric acid. An additional amount of fatty acid is added to permit efficient flotation of the carbonates. 1n a second stage, the silicates left behind with the apatite concentrate can be removed by depressing the apatite with AIC3 while floating the silicates with a secondary amine.The results of the laboratory tests indicate the possibility of producing an apatite concentrate assaying 38.3% P2O5 (83.7% BPL) with a recovery of 66.2%. Pilot-plant tests undertaken at the concentrator yielded a concentrate of 34% P205 and recovery of 76%."

Bio-hydrometallurgy technology was applied for the extraction of copper from the raw ores of Chambishi Mine in Zambia. A copper extraction of 93.29% was obtained for small scale column bioleaching within 63 days, while a copper extraction of 89.05% was achieved for large scale column bioleaching in 90 days, thus confirming the amenability of the raw ores for effective extraction via bioleaching. The bacteria were cultured in a 6-stage enlarge cultivation. The bacterial cultures with cell concentration of more than 1×108 cells/mL were added into a spray pond of sulfuric acid to be applied in the dump leaching, and a copper extraction of about 50% was achieved within 2 months. The production report revealed that the copper extraction increased by approximate 20%, and the acid consumption was reduced to around 35% as a consequence of adding the bacteria. The industrial demonstration of the bio-hydrometallurgy technique is now well established in Zambia, and further applications of bio-hydrometallurgy in both Zambia and Congo are currently in progress.

The Bibliographic Data Base contained in the present volume is the result of a literature search conducted as one task of the Bureau of Mines project concerned with research in borehole assay technology. The data base includes articles, symposia, books, corporate and government reports, patents, and other literature concerned with some aspect of borehole logging, from January 1969 through December 1975. Occasional updating to keep the data base current is anticipated. The remainder of the intro¬duction will be devoted to the explanation of the organization of each entry, along with the translation of terms and abbreviations used in the text. Each entry contains six sections. These include an ID code, a title, an author section, a source section, an abstract, and a descriptor section. The first item listed in an entry is the ID code. This serves to identify an entry. It consists of the first six characters of the first author&apos;s (or editor if no authors are involved) last name, along with the last two digits of the year of publication. A letter sometimes follows the year of publication to assure a unique alphanumeric code. For example, if an author named Wilson writes more than one piece of literature in a given year (for example, 1972), the ID code for the entries identifying these pieces of literature would be identical. Therefore, to allow for unique ID codes, the first piece would he identified as "WILSON 72,&apos;, the second piece as "WILSON 72A", the third "WILSON 72B", and so on.

Developments in reverberatory furnace practice at Noranda over the period 1928 to 1953 are described. Features of interest are increasing furnace tonnage from 700 to 2000 tons per furnace day, the use of the suspended basic roof, and improvements in furnace fuel ratio. Points of comparison and contrast between Canadian and American furnace practice are given. OPERATIONS at the Noranda smelter have been described in a series of papers published between 1930 and 1945.1-4 In the present paper the development of reverberatory furnace practice over the 25 year period from the beginning of operations up to the present time will be reviewed and current furnace practice will be described in some detail. Particular attention will be given to those features which are characteristic of Canadian practice: first, the use of the suspended basic roof; second, the deliberate driving of furnaces to give tonnages in the range of 1400 to 2000 tons of solid charge per furnace day; and third, the continuous operation of furnaces at high tonnage for many years without any extended shutdown for repairs or rebuilding. Finally, points of comparison and contrast between reverberatory furnace practice in Canada and the United States will be discussed. The Noranda smelter, which started in December 1927, was built for the reduction of ore from the Horne mine where early development had shown a comparatively small tonnage of rich cop-per-gold ore of a grade and character which would require direct smelting. The smelter was designed for a capacity of 1000 tons of ore a day and originally consisted of eight roasters, two reverberatory furnaces, and two converters, together with necessary auxiliaries. The discovery of a large new body of ore in 1928 made it necessary to increase both the size and the scope of the reduction plant. A mill which was ultimately brought to a capacity of 3000 tons a day was built for concentrating low grade ore and in addition the capacity of the smelting plant had to be greatly expanded, so that for the next fifteen years every effort in the smelter was directed toward achieving maximum tonnage. Because the layout and design of the smelter made it impracticable to add a third furnace, it was necessary to increase the tonnage on the two original furnaces by improvements in furnace design and operation, roasting and converting equipment being added as required to meet the demands of increased furnace capacity. The smelter tonnage, which reached a peak in 1941, was curtailed in 1944 when it became necessary to operate on a one-furnace basis because of a reduction in the output of the Horne mine due to a shortage of labor. Two-furnace operation at a moderate tonnage was resumed in 1949. In the early years the smelter tonnage was made up almost entirely of Noranda ores and concentrates. However, since 1937 an increasing tonnage of ores and concentrates from other mines has been treated in the smelter. In recent years, with decreased production from the Horne mine, copper concentrates from several mines in the district, treated on a custom basis, have formed an important part of the smelter tonnage. The four top barite-producing countries in the world are China, India, Morocco and the United States. China is currently the largest exporter of barite followed by India. More than 95 percent of the barite mined today is used by the petroleum industry as driller’s mud. The rest is used in the industrial market and the medical field. Most of the barite mined in the United States is in Nevada. This year, mining activity has increased due to an increase in oil exploration/development. This was caused by an increase in the crude oil prices.
