Potgietersrust Platinums Ltd (PPRust) is Anglo Platinum?s only open pit operation. The major slope stability concern at PPRust is rapid, small-scale brittle failure on the west wall of Sandsloot open pit. In order to improve safety and mine more economically, a comprehensive slope monitoring strategy has been implemented. In the last 3 years four new state-of-the-art monitoring systems have been installed namely an ISSI microseismic monitoring system, a GeoMoS automated prism monitoring system, prismless Riegl laser scanners and a GroundProbe slope stability radar (SSR). Groundwater monitoring and visual monitoring have also been improved over the same time period. To complement the visual inspections, SiroVision digital photogrammetry is now used for predicting where future failures may occur. All these monitoring tools provide primary monitoring which is used to identify high risk areas. The SSR is then set up in that area to provide early warning of failure so evacuation can be successfully done. Fault tree analysis has proved that with this comprehensive slope monitoring strategy the geotechnical risk at PPRust is greatly reduced, allowing mining to continue safely and economically in challenging conditions.

IN 1945-1946, the author measured temper brittle-ness in ingots of varying composition prepared by remelting SAE 3135 bar stock under vacuum. Since other investigators1-" have been referring to this hitherto unpublished work, belated publication seems worthwhile. Steel in 7 lb batches&apos; was induction melted with nickel additions in a magnesia crucible under a pressure of 10 microns of Hg or less and cast into a 2 in. diam chill mold. The compositions of ingots A, B, and C prepared in this way are shown in Table I; the vacuum melting lowered carbon, manganese, sulphur, and nitrogen content. Ingot B was homogenized 24 hr at 1095°C; ingots A and C were not homogenized. Blanks, M in. square, were cut from each ingot, austenitized 1 hr at 870°C, water quenched, tempered 1 hr at 595"C, and water quenched. Half the blanks from each ingot were given an embrittling treatment of 50 hr at 455°C and water quenched. A few specimens, embrittled and unembrittled, were finally heated 1 hr at 580°C and water quenched. Charpy specimens machined from the blanks were V-notched on the side closest to ingot mid-radius and paired as to radial position in the ingot, one of each pair having received the embrittling treatment and the other not. Specimens were broken in a standard impact machine at various temperatures, the same temperature, in general, being used for both bars of a pair. Fig. 1 shows the results. It is evident that temper brittleness, as measured by the increase in temperature of transition from brittle to tough failure introduced by the 455°C treatment, was decreased but not eliminated by reducing carbon to 0.006 pct, manganese to < 0.004 pct, and nitrogen to 0.001 pct. In another study," temper brittleness was apparently eliminated by -reducing carbon to 0.003 pct, with 0.80 pct Mn and 0.0015 pct N (ingot D)." • Analyses given for carbon below 0.02 pct were made by Jensen method; for nitrogen, by Kjehldahl method. Values quoted else-where&apos;-&apos;." for carbon content of ingot C and for nitrogen content of ingot D were obtained by conventional combustlon and by vacuum fusion methods, respectively, and are considered much less accurate. The 580°C final treatment removed previous em-brittlement (ingot B particularly), indicating that this was "reversible embrittlement."" Metallographic examination of ingot C with 1 pct nital etch revealed only ferrite; ingot A had carbide spheroids uniformly distributed in a ferrite matrix. With ethereal picric acid plus zephiran chloride etchant.&apos; no differences between embrittled and un- embrittled specimens of ingots A, B, or C were noted. Fracture of C and D below the transition temperature was predominantly transcrystalline, with traces of intercrystalline, in both embrittled and unembrittled conditions. The corresponding fracture of unembrittled B was mixed transcrystalline and intercrystalline; of embrittled B, predominantly intercrystalline with some transcrystalline areas. . . . The water sensitivity of the oil - gas - producing sandstones in three fields in the Patrick Draw area of southwestern Wyoming was estimated by laboratory testing . The tests used to estimate sensitivity , which is a measure of the loss of well productivity if the producing formation is invaded by fresh water , are : Porosity ; permeability to gas , water , and brines ; saturation characteristics with air displacing water from the samples and by mercury injection ; and identification of clay minerals by X - ray diffraction . Laboratory results indicate that the degree of water sensitivity of the sands in the Patrick Draw, Table Rock , and Desert Springs fields vary , in that order , from moderately sensitive to highly sensitive . The main cause of the sensitivity appears to be the movement of fine particles in the pores , but the swelling of a small amount of an expandible clay mineral may also contribute to the permeability reduction observed in the samples . Laboratory results further indicate that the permeability of the sands to fresh water is seriously reduced if they are first flushed with sodium chloride brine ; calcium chloride brine is less harmful to the sands than sodium chloride brine . The low original permeability of the oil sand in the Patrick Draw field , together with its moderate sensitivity , indicate that the rate of water injection for the secondary recovery of oil will be low . Limited field experience in two pilot - injection wells confirms this prediction .

Precipitated silica is marketed with a rising demand as reinforcing filler in the rubber industry and as a potential raw material for the synthesis of lithium-ion battery electrodes. Due to an awareness of the environmental impact of the existing processes for the production of precipitated silica, a green and sustainable process was proposed by using sodium bicarbonate (NaHCO3) as an alternative to sulfuric or hydrochloric acid in the precipitation reaction with sodium silicates. The use of NaHCO3 allows for better control of the supersaturation and pH to form silica with desired quality. Additionally, Na2CO3 solution as the process by-product is recyclable because it could be recovered to produce NaHCO3 by absorbing CO2. The solubility of sodium metasilicate nonahydrate (Na2SiO3·9H2O) in the Na-CO3-HCO3-OH-H2O system was measured using a dynamic method in the temperature range from 288.15 to 308.15 K. It is found that the solubility of Na2SiO3·9H2O decreases with increasing concentration of either Na2CO3 or NaOH over the investigated concentration range. With the aid of the OLI platform, a chemical model for the Na2SiO3-Na-CO3-HCO3-OH system was established with newly obtained interaction parameters of the Bromley-Zemaitis model by regression of experimental solubility data. The new model predicted the solubility of Na2SiO3·9H2O in multi-component systems with good agreement and was used to conduct a preliminary feasibility study of the new process.

In the mineral-processing field, bioleaching of metal sulphide concentrates is currently operated in very large mechanically agitated tanks. Such bioreactors have considerable requirements in terms of power consumption for mixing, aeration and heat transfer. The use of slurry bubble column, where the particles are suspended by gas motion as well as by liquid upward flow, could be an alternative to achieve bioleaching in more economical conditions. In order to compare these two techniques, a unit of stirred reactors in cascade and a bubble column were comparatively operated at laboratory scale in the bioleaching of a pyrite concentrate. For both pieces of equipment, experiments were performed not only in batch mode but also in continuous conditions.

There are interactions between different minerals from the same ore, minerals and grinding media, and the electrochemical conditions present in the system. Grinding in steel rod and ball mills is a common practice in minerals processing. It is accepted, that the electrochemical interactions between the grinding media and minerals in a grinding mill, influence the corrosive wear of balls/rods and the surface properties of the ground minerals. A complex massive sulphide, Cu-Zn, TAKNAR, Iran, was used for all the experiments. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of grinding media (dry or wet) on the pulp chemistry and recovery of Cu and Zn in bulk concentrate. 1100 g of ore samples were milled, and mill products with d80=85 and 75 micron in wet and dry grinding methods were produced. Rougher bulk flotation experiments were performed with 550g ore samples, at 30% solids. SIPX in conjunction with Aero238 in 1:2 ratio (48 g/t), was used as mixed collector system, and copper sulphate (200g/t) and MIBC (20 g/t) were employed as sphalerite activator and frother. Lime and High purity Oxygen gas were used for adjusting pH at 8.5 and aeration. The results showed that, more positive pulp potentials were measured when the feed had been ground in a dry environment, and the difference in pulp potentials between the dry and wet ground feed was approximately 250 mV after the grinding stage. In dry grinding method, the recovery of Cu and Zn increased approximately 5 and 10%, respectively. In addition, in dry ground samples, the volume of middling and coarse particles (+100 micron) were more and Dry ground flotation feed had better agreed with using a mixture of collectors. The problems of slope stability in open cast mines are examined. A criterion, the instantaneous stripping ratio, is suggested for use in the design of pit slopes and as an index of control at all stages of the exploitation of the orebody. This criterion may also be related to safety and to the maximizing of profits. Two approaches to safe design of slopes, one from the point of view of soil mechanics and the other from the point of view of rock mechanics, are described and critically compared. The effect on slope stability of the regional tectonic stress field is discussed. Explanation is given of the application of the Terzaghi effective stress concept to problems in both soil and rock environments, including possible effects when borehole deformation techniques are used to measure stresses in rock in situ. A company embarking on open cast mining is faced with two basic questions: 1) will the venture be profitable and 2) can it be carried out with safety? The two questions are obviously interrelated because both depend upon the slope angles adopted for the pit. The cost of open cast mining depends largely upon the stripping ratio, defined as the volume of overburden that must be removed to the volume of ore recovered. The steeper the slope angles, the more favorable the stripping ratio, but the stability of the slopes, and therefore the safety of men and materials in the pit, require that the angles be made relatively flat. Consequently, the design depends upon a compromise: the slopes must be steep enough to result in economical mining and flat enough to ensure safety. Today there is a world trend towards deeper mining by open cast methods. This is mainly due to the higher cost of underground mining and the lower cost of open excavation resulting from the introduction of large modern earth and rock-moving machinery. Deeper open cast mining has led to a very great increase in the volumes of wasted overburden, and much thought is being given to the considerable economic benefits which would result if pit slopes could be made steeper by even one or two degrees. The result has been an increasing interest in research into slope stability problems in the expectation that the application of scientific principles will provide solutions leading both to economies and to more predictable operation of the mines. In at least four places, the U.S., Australia, Western Germany and Southern Africa, comprehensive investigations are at present in progress, and it is the object of this paper to review some of the more important aspects of these programs. RELATION BETWEEN ECONOMY OF OPERATION AND SLOPE ANGLES The main object of any industrial enterprise in a free economy is to make a profit. In mining, where profits must be made from a wasting capital asset, a further definition of the profit motive is imposed, namely that the economic aim should be to maximize the total possible profit. But since profits deferred for a number of years are not as valuable as profits that are immediately available, it is usual to discount deferred profits at some rate of interest which reflects their current or present value in the hands of the investor. Thus, in mining the logical aim can be defined more closely still: to maximize the present value of the total future profits. In commercial terms the present value represents the market value of the operation as a going concern. Many factors enter into the forecast of current and future profits. They include the volume of production, the price of the salable product and the cost of production. Current profits can be estimated with reasonable accuracy by the operating engineers; but it is the task of economists and management to assess future trends in the mineral markets and in the economy as a whole, and together with the engineers, they can then estimate the future cost and profitability of the mining operations. In open cast mining, the rate of ore production once decided on remains a virtually constant factor unless a major change in the capital structure of the mine is made. The Bureau of Mines evaluated a quartz schist formation within the Blue Joint Wilderness Study Area which was identified as having a "high potential" for copper-silver-cobalt-barium resources. Stratiform and remobilized copper occurs near, and bedded barite within, the study area. In addition, the black to gray Proterozoic quartz schist may correlate with the Yellowjacket Formation which contains cobalt-copper-gold-silver deposits at Blackbird, ID, about 30 miles to the south. Eighty soil and 43 rock samples collected across the quartz schist formation were analyzed for gold, silver, copper, cobalt, and barium. During the reconnaissance and sampling, particular attention was given to looking for malachite (copper carbonate) and erythrite (cobalt arsenate, also known as "cobalt bloom"). The sample analyses and geology in this localized area do not provide enough evidence to support the "high potential" designation for copper-silver-cobalt resources. Barium potential still appears high, however.

IN technological studies on steel considerable emphasis has been placed on the identification of the foreign inclusions, testimony of which is adequately given in the metallographic literature covering methods for their identification. The outstanding accomplishment in this field is the scheme devised by Campbell, Comstock and Wohrman for identi-fying various oxides, sulfides, silicates and other constituents by syste-matic etching tests and microscopic examination.1 The time involved in carrying out this procedure has led to attempts to secure quicker methods, or at least to shorten the time required to secure essential information. An example of this is the use of dark field illumination, but when this was tried out by the authors it was found that cavities and pits on the polished surface appeared bright on a dark field and could not be distinguished from small glassy inclusions. Still another means is the Leitz Ultropak, an instrument equipped with optical units for the illumination of the specimen by reflected light to secure an effect similar to dark field illumination. The structures are made visible in exceedingly sharp details by utilizing the inherent properties of the samples, such as refractive index, absorption coefficients and reflection powers. We have had no experience, with the Ultropak, but a recent paper by Benedicks and Löfquist3 describes methods for

The Rio Tinto (Mount Bruce Mining Pty Ltd) Koodaideri Iron Ore Project is located approximately 110 km north-west of Newman in the Pilbara region of Western Australia. During detailed ecological studies of the project area, a significant maternity roost (containing around 430 individuals) of the Orange Leaf-nosed Bat (OLNB) (Rhinonicteris aurantius) was discovered within the boundaries of the proposed mining area. The OLNB is listed as Vulnerable under the Commonwealth Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999 and is listed as a Schedule 1 species under the Western Australian Wildlife Conservation Act 1950.With a good understanding of blast vibration attenuation in the Pilbara’s different geologies and in the absence of other known studies, it was considered that appropriate buffer distances between mining and bat colonies were not scientifically determined. Therefore, to inform the environmental approvals process that was underway, a series of seismic blasts was planned to assess and measure the sensitivity of the OLNB to trial-sized seismic blasting activities to develop a more scientifically based buffer zone for the protection of the OLNB. This was to be achieved by testing ground attenuation of the site and measuring any response from the OLNB to the firing of seismic charges. Rio Tinto sought the independent expertise of ecological consultants to evaluate and participate in the work to quantify the level of sensitivity of the bat colony and to outline the proposal to government authorities.After detailed risk assessment and project mapping, the seismic blasts were implemented, with the aim of firing individual charged and measured vector peak particle velocity (VPPV) at the OLNB roost cave, combined with monitoring OLNB disturbance activity within the roost that was invoked by the blasts. A series of six charges were fired with the VPPV ranging from 0.66 mms-1 to 18.70 mms-1. The OLNB activity was monitored using high frequency microphones, which detect bat calls emitted during flight. Under daytime conditions, the bats would normally be dormant, so the null hypothesis was for no calls to be detected if the bats displayed no disturbance behaviour. This work has improved understanding of mining activities (blasting) on the OLNB species, assisting in establishing mining exclusion zones that are based on scientific data, contributing to a sustainable future for both the environment and the mining industry.CITATION:Martin, D, 2015. Performance of tunnel boring machines - usually expressed in terms of penetration per revolution - is determined by relations between machine thrust and torque, head diameter and rock strength. It can be shown that for a given machine power and head diameter there is only one rock strength at which the machine performs optimally. In weaker rocks the available torque limits performance and in stronger rocks, the available thrust. Performance data shows that, historically, machines have been designed to cut weaker rocks. Optimization of thrust is required to improve performance in stronger rocks.

When silver chloride deforms by pencil glide at temperatures of 26ºand 72°C, grain size has no effect upon the proportional limit and the material necks down to a knife edge under tension. At -196ºC, deformation takes place on fewer slip systems to produce straight slip traces, the flow stress becomes sensitive to grain size and fracture occurs by cleavage from an intergranular source without any reduction in area. THERE are significant differences between the appearance of the slip bands formed in silver chloride and in the alkali halides at room temperature. The bands in sodium chloride, e.g., are fine and geometrically straight, whereas in silver chloride they are coarse and wavy.&apos; Such differences in the slip behavior prompted us to inquire what the effects of grain boundaries might be on the mechanical properties of these solids. As an introduction to a general study of ionic poly-crystal behavior, we have investigated the effect of grain size on the stress-strain relationships in silver chloride at different temperatures. We have chosen silver chloride chiefly because polycrystals can be easily prepared free from cracks and macroscopic voids by conventional techniques. Moreover, as we shall see, the slip behavior can be readily modified by changing the temperature. It will be shown that the effect of grain size on the yield stress of silver chloride is strikingly dependent upon the temperature of deformation and that this temperature effect comes about through a change in the number of slip systems which operate at the onset of plastic flow. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURES Polycrystalline tensile specimens were made by recrystallizing cold-rolled AgCl sheet. Thirty-gram quantities of AR grade silver chloride powder were melted in a low heat capacity furnace, cast into cylindrical forms 3/4 in. in dim and approximately 1 in. in length and then extruded with a 16:l reduction ratio into rods 3/16 in. in dim. Extrusion temperatures were varied from room temperature to 350°C. In order to impart various degrees of cold&apos;work to the extruded rod. All extrusions were then cross rolled to sheet 0.040 in. in thickness at room temperature and machined to form tensile specimens having a gage length of 0.750 in. with a width of either 0.250 or 0.145 in.* Annealing was carried out in an air oven at 200°C for periods up to 20 hr. specimens having average grain diameters ranging from 0.024 to 0.40 mm were prepared by varying the extrusion temperature and annealing time in the conventional manner. To obtain specimens with grain sizes larger than 0.40mm, lightly deformed thin prisims of silver chloride single crystals (supplied by Harshaw Chemical Co.) were recrystallized. Grain size determinations were made by an intercept method and revealed that the grains were equi-axed. Laue back-reflection X-ray patterns showed little tendency to form a preferred orientation texture. Specimens which were to be used for the slip band studies were polished by immersion in fresh boiling concentrated NH,OH for 60 sec. They were then etch polished for 10 sec on each side by hand lapping on a stationary velveteen lap wetted with a dilute Hypo solution (5 g of Kodak Acid Fixer in 100 cc H20). Finally the specimens were rinsed in warm water and alcohol, blown dry and carefully mounted in the tensile machine for testing. Tensile tests were performed at three temperatures, namely, 26º, -72º, and -196°C. A screw-driven hard tensile machine was used at a constant strain rate of 0.006 in. per in. per min. Loads were determined with a light- proof ring fitted with A-18 strain gages and extensions were measured with a 0.0001 in. dial gage. Constant level baths of alcohol with dry ice and liquid nitrogen were used to maintain the two lower test temperatures. EXPERIMENTAL RESULTS Reproducibility—In view of the light sensitivity and reactive nature of silver chloride, it was necessary to determine whether reproducibility depended upon either exposure to light or to the condition of the surface. Geologic faults have always been a plague to the mining industry, and have often reduced a mining venture from a profitable to a marginal operation, and even at times have forced companies to liquidation or bankruptcy. The use of geology as an economic tool in coal mining is not generally recognized, particularly in coal deposits which are horizontal or essentially flat-lying, in which faulting might not be prevalent. However in pitching coal seams, the existence of faults is considered an inherent challenge, as the inclination of the seam or seams per se, is a product of geologic disturbance. The problems of faults are a constant challenge to the management of the Thompson Creek Coal and Coke Corp. in their operations in Pitkin County, Colorado, where high grade medium volatile coking coal is mined. The background for this paper has been provided by the experiences of these operations, in overcoming the effects of faults in mining, and resolving the fault structures. The properties of the Thompson Creek Coal and Coke Corp. are located in central Colorado, 13 miles southwest of Carbondale, Colorado, a tow] on the main highway between Glenwood Springs and Aspen, Fig. 1. The elevation at the mine portals is approximately 8000 feet: there is a relief of some 2.000 feet to the adjacent ridges rising away from the [nine portals. &apos;The entire present production of these properties totaling 180.000 tons of clean coal per year is trucked to the railhead at Carbondale, Colorado, from whence it is shipped to the Geneva Steel Plant at Provo, Utah. The properties were initially opened in September 1952. A total of 125 men are currently employed with the production conting from the Number 1 and 3 Mines, and development workings of the Number 2 and 5 Mines respectively. While the No. 2 Vine was opened in 1953 prior to No, 3 Mine, the encountering of faults without sufficient development work accomplished to sustain production, necessitated the diversion of manpower to the other [nines for economic considerations. The Crushed Stone Industry plays an important role in Pennsylvania&apos;s mineral economy. During 1965, the total production of crushed and broken stone in the United States reached 780 million tons from which 57 million tons were produced in Pennsylvania (Mineral Industries Surveys, 1966). It is further significant that Pennsylvania is the nation&apos;s leading crushed stone producer. Future trends in stone production will quite likely parallel those in the construction industry. Stone and stone products are finding greater and more varied uses each year. Continued record expenditures for structures such as dams, highways and buildings are the prime reasons for this accelerated growth in demand. Completion of the interstate road system and the maintenance of Pennsylvania&apos;s already expanded highway system form the essentials for this expanding market.

"The recent discovery and exploitation of petroleum territory have resulted in the enactment of new petroleum laws in most of the South American Republics. The activities in the discovery of these new fields were engendered by the knowledge of the fact that present producing fields must within well defined periods be exhausted. Oil operators were willing to take the initial steps in exploitation in the absence of legislation that applied strictly to petroleum operations. The enactment of modern legislation in many of these Republics encouraging and protect¬ing exploitations may cause tremendous oil activities in these countries, and the results may be comparable with the magnitude of the undertakings and the prestige of the companies now entering this territory.These, oil fields are admirably located for convenient distribution of petroleum by water to all the Nations using oil as fuel for shipping and industrial concerns. The oil markets of the western coast of South America will derive immense benefits from the Panama Canal. This navigation route brings these markets into direct ocean shipment with the Atlantic coasts of the Western and Eastern Hemispheres.One deterrent to oil production in the Republics of South America is the want of inland. transportation facilities, but the recent laws of these Republics without exception provide for acquiring rights of way for pipe lines and other modes of transportation; and doubtless the great interests and. syndicates already operating in these regions will, as production increases, provide ample pipe line transportation sufficient to convey to the coast the oil produced. It way be assumed, from the legal guarantees afforded, and from operating equipment and machinery that are now being concentrated that refineries will be erected at shipping points for the purpose of making these petroleum products accessible to the world."

Scan electron micrographs, SEM&apos;s, will be shown of representative refractory clays from Missouri deposits, with counterparts from other localities. The story is in the pictures, ("1000 words in each picture"), but clay types include the following. Plastic, semi-plastic, and semi-flint "fire clays" of Missouri have textures which appear to retain certain relic texture of ball clay. Flint clay is composed of tightly interlocking packets, sheaves, and books of kaolinite. Diaspore and boehmite mineral textures characterize those "clays". Surface-boulder diaspore shows very pronounced recrystallization and crystal enlargement from original, unexposed first-grade diaspore.

In recent years various modifications in the methods of blasting have been tried as a means of increasing the production of cod and of reducing mining costs. Following an investigation by the Bureau or Mines, authorization was granted to increase the charger limit for permissible explosives par shot hole from 1.5 to 3 pounds under contain conditions; this greatly facilitates the blasting of coal in some cool fields the practice has gradually evolved of simultaneously charging several shot holes in a face and then firing the charges singly without inspecting for gas after each blast. This practice is disapproved by the Bureau of Mines. In other coal mines the explosive chews in several adjacent shot holes are fired simultaneously. This form of shooting is claimed to increase the rate of production, generate smaller volumes of noxious gases, promote the health and safety of workers by eliminating the need of inspection of the face after each charge is fired, produce less float dust, and require less explosive than single shooting. However, simultaneous blasting may have a more harmful effect on the immediate roof strata; in some instances it leads to wedging of the broken coal, thereby making the coal more difficult to load out; it makes misfired shots more difficult to detect and possibly increases the chances of misfires. This lacy be duo to variations in the characteristics of detonators, because of more stringent requirements for adequate firing current, to the need for better electrical connections in the shot-firing circuit, and partly to the inadequacy of present permissible multiple blasting devices.

Current state-of-the-art microweighing technology represented by the Tapered Element Oscillating Microbalance (TEOM) is utilized as the basis for a new generation of Personal Dust Exposure Monitors (PDEM&apos;s). Two design configurations are presented. The first is an end-of-shift analysis system which uses small TEOM-PDEM cannisters that replace the filter cartridges in the current PDEM system. All other components carried by the miner (cyclone preseparator and pump) are the same. After the shift the TEOM cannister is plugged into an interface box which enables a minicomputer to automatically identify the unit, determine the dust mass increase during the shift, compute the shift average dust mass concentration, and print out and/or store the data. The second design is a real-time TEOM-PDEM system which is capable of operation over a 10-hour shift and on demand display real-time dust concentration level, time weighted average, and shift average concentration. As a result of the design study, a prototype end-of-shift analysis system was fabricated and delivered to the Bureau of Mines. A description of this system which consists of six TEOM cannisters, interface electronics and minicomputer is given. The system represents a significant advance in the dust monitoring program in terms or accuracy and automation.
