INTRODUCTION MINERAL deposits that have formed by the various geologic processes, when exposed to air and water at or near the surface of the earth, break down and form new compounds that are stable under surface conditions. Mechanical disintegration of the ores proceeds along with chemical alteration which generally is attended by oxidation, carbonation and hydration. Essentially all minerals are affected-silicates, carbonates, native metals, sulphides, etc. Where iron sulphides are present, oxidation yields sulphuric acid, and in the presence of oxygen and iron, ferric sulphate, a powerful solvent, is formed. Above the water level, in the vadose or shallow zone, both air and water are present. Below the water level air is excluded and that which is carried down with water is removed from the solution by reactions with reducing materials. Above the water level, solution is the pre-dominating process; below the water level, precipitation generally is equally important. In some deposits, particularly above the hater level, valueless materials are removed from the ore, leaving certain metals in a more highly concentrated state. This type of alteration, which has been termed negative enrichment, is common in ores of iron, aluminum, manganese and certain other metals. Some gold deposits, particularly those in which the environment is unfavorable for solution of gold, have been enriched near the surface by removal of material other than gold. Certain metals are readily dissolved in an oxidizing acid environment. These include copper, silver and, under certain conditions, gold. In the presence of iron sulphides, deposits of these metals are likely to be leached above the water level. The metals are carried downward to depths where air is excluded, and where they may be redeposited, generally below the water level. Such enrichment by addition of metals has been termed positive enrichment.

Improperly designed support systems have led to unplanned roof falls in longwall tailgates. To prevent such falls requires appropriate support and adequately designed support systems. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) is currently developing a standing support design methodology based on the ground reaction curve. To design the support system with this methodology requires a quantitative assessment of the ground and support interaction, which is developed from instrumented test sites installed in longwall tailgates. To compliment and expand the field data results and to optimize the support design, numerical modeling is also conducted. The models are calibrated from the test site data. In the present study, data was obtained from a longwall tailgate in the Illinois basin. The test site was located in the Herrin No. 6 coal seam at a depth of 500 ft. At the site, the immediate roof was a weak shale overlain by a competent limestone. Above the limestone, sandstone formed the intermediate roof. The floor consisted of a weak underclay. In the study, the performance and interaction with the surrounding rock mass of two different standing supports, an engineered crib and a conventional 4-point wood crib were monitored. The two cribs have similar load-displacement characteristics at least through 6 in of displacement. Beyond 6 in, the engineered crib becomes unstable and begins to strain soften and shed load. The measurements and developed ground reaction curves indicated that the tailgate at the mine was a low convergence environment until well inby the face. Because the convergence was well below their capacity, both supports provide more than adequate levels of support to the tailgate. Significant convergence and support loading did not occur until 90 to 100 ft inby the face. The results of this study were also compared with results from similar studies conducted in the Pittsburgh seam to further advance the development of the ?ground reaction curve? based support system design.

This report assesses the economic, legal, institutional and technical factors that affect the current and future status of implementation of mine monitoring systems in the United States. It begins with a description of a poll of the Mining Production Research Committee and the Mine Monitoring and Communications Committee of Bituminous Coal Research that was conducted to establish industry monitoring needs and constraints. Existing systems in the United States and foreign countries are then reviewed and compared with the requirements set forth by the industry committees. At the same time, state and federal mining laws are reviewed, and equipment currently available from suppliers of mine monitoring systems and components is discussed. A framework for cost/benefit analysis is established and a series of case examples for various monitoring functions are presented. The total values of the market for mine monitoring systems in 1980 and 1990 are estimated on the basis of industry statistics and system cost estimates.

Material scheduling, sequencing planning and execution are the core tactical mine plan for achieving production targets that maximize the objective function of any mine production entity. This objective function is constrained by several exogenous and endogenous constraints including geological, operating, technological, marketing, financial, political, social and local field constraints. Linear and dynamic programming techniques have been used to formulate algorithms to solve the problems associated with scheduling and sequencing operations. These algorithms possess the mathematical rigor for dealing with the fundamental problems but they fail to provide adequate answers to random and dynamic process problems. Materials scheduling and sequencing are carried out within the bounds of random and dynamic fields. The functional relations between the output and dependent variables are random, and thus, current algorithms are limited in their abilities to address the problems arising from these random field processes. In this study a production simulator is developed to capture the random field process associated with materials scheduling and sequencing in an open pit environment. The algorithm incorporates a geometric pit evolution model, using solid geometry of an ellipsoidal frustum to capture material displacement dynamics. Taylor series expansion about the dimensions of the initial frustum is used to provide numerical solutions to the resulting partial differential equations governing the pushback dynamics. A production simulator, derived from the stochastic and dynamic models, is developed, validated and used to simulate the changes in the pit volume resulting from periodic incremental pushbacks and the random field process. The hybrid stochastic-optimization algorithm provides a powerful tool for addressing the random field and dynamic process problems. Combined with a hybrid stochastic-optimization dispatch system, tactical production planning and execution will be efficient and economic for achieving desired.

Of the 50 or so most often utilized industrial minerals, more than two thirds are, or have been, produced in the western states of Arizona, Colorado, Idaho, Kansas, Montana, Nebraska, New Mexico, North Dakota, Oklahoma, South Dakota, Texas, Utah, and Wyoming. Some commodities, such as natural aggregate, currently are produced in all 13 states; others such as beryllium and iodine are produced in only Utah and Oklahoma, respectively. Together, the 13 western states make a significant contribution to the US industrial minerals industry.

"The influence of superheat degree on the distribution and volume content of inclusions were studied in 65Mn thin slab produced by compact strip production(CSP) in Zhujiang Steel in China, The results showed that the diameters of inclusions are mainly less than 5µm. Most of the inclusions gathered at the 1/4 thickness direction for the thin slab of 27? superheat degree, compared with the center position for that of 37?. There are more inclusions larger than 50µm in the low superheat samples, which is caused by the short floating time. In addition, the inclusions were observed and analyzed by metallurgical microscope, SEM and EDS in order to ensure their composition, type and further find their source. It was find that the types of these inclusions mainly are Al2O3, SiO2,CaO and their composites, a few of them are TiN and MnS.IntroductionIt is well known that inclusions have a great impact on the strength, plasticity, fracture toughness, cutting performance, fatigue property and corrosion resistance of steels. Especially, with the demand for thinner slab, the cleanness is increasingly becoming more significant as a quality criterion[1]. High manganese and carbon steels not only demonstrate high strength but also proper plasticity. There are many problems unsolved for 65Mn steel as a result of the low solidification rate, bad thermal strength, crack sensitivity and low casting temperature[2,3].The superheat of the molten steel has a great impact on the erosion of refractory lining, molten steel fluidity and non-metallic inclusion behavior[4]. The serious erosion situation of ladle lining, nozzle and casting tundish will give rise to more inclusions at a high superheat. Meantime higher superheat will make second dendrite arm spacing coursing and element segregation which lead to inclusion, bubble formation and shrinkage cavity. On the contrary, it is hard for non-metallic inclusions to float up with a low superheat value. Inclusions of 65Mn steel, which produced in different superheat condition by CSP, were studied for the sake of higher slab properties including statistics and EDS analysis."

THE milling of talc, as is the case of many non-metallic minerals, until recently, has not received adequate technical consideration, for the talc industry has become of importance only within the last decade. At first, talc was used only in the massive form, for foot warmers, griddles, and so on, and milling methods were unnecessary. As the demand for ground talc increased, producers adopted the machinery used in the milling of flour; in fact, many talc mills were rebuilt flour mills. Improvement has been slow, but today several types of grinding and separating machinery are in use; many of them, however, are still inadequate and inefficient. To determine the best methods of milling talc, it is necessary to understand the essential properties a talc must possess to fit it for a particular use. For toilet purposes, whiteness, freedom from lime and grit, fineness of grain, and good "slip" are essential. As a paper filler or coating, the talc must be white, have a good slip, be free from grit and iron, uniform, and fine grained; freedom from lime is a disputed point. Fibrous talc is supposed to be superior to massive on account of the interlocking of grains in the paper, thus increasing its strength; this point, though, is in doubt. In general, talc for the paper industry need not be of as high quality or as fine grained as that used for toilet purposes. Talc is usually bought by sample, for which reason it is difficult to state the essential properties for use in paint, rubber, roofing, and so on. The adoption of standard screen tests and standard grades by producers is necessary before an accurate basis for manufacturing or selling standards can be established. Off-color tales might be utilized, as in Germany and-Austria, by the establishment of standard grades of colored tales.

The flotation of pyrite which be pretreated by electrochemical ways under external controlled voltages in different pH is explored. The floatability of pyrite is increased indistinctively after being pretreated in acidic and xanthate environment; Whereas, it is increased obviously between 400~800 millivolt in alkaline and xanthate condition. The reason for higher recovery of pyrite is that oxida-tion reaction, which results in S0 and S02, takes place on its surface, and that ethyl xanthate is oxi-dized into dixanthogen. In the meantime, the kinetics and mechanism is also studied.

THE most acceptable approacl1 to analyzing rock behaviour, at the present time, is based on the application of principles of mechanics and strength of materials. Analyses have been made in which the criterion of failure is based on maximum stress (1) and on Mohr's rupture theory (2). If such analyses are to be carried out, the mechanical properties of the rock must be known within acceptable limits. Although an adequate correlation of laboratory test results with field conditions has not been established, test results have been published (3) on the basis of their comparative value. That is, test results may be useful for comparing the behaviour of different rocks under similar loading conditions or of a particular rock under different loading conditions. This study aims at establishing some of the mechanical properties of an andesite rock by testing specimens cut _from diamond drill core. Drill core (EX) was provided from run-of-mine drilling by New Dickenson Mines Ltd. and Campbell Red Lake Mines Ltd.

Cuprous oxide is one of the oldest antifouling agents and also acts as red pigment in these paints. In printed circuit board manufacturing industries, waste etchant contains a substantial amount of copper ion. In the present study, a process was suggested for recovering cuprous oxides from the waste etchant and optimum conditions were investigated to recover the cuprous oxides. The process consists of two steps: in first step, Cu powder is added into wastewater solution, and cupric ions re-duce into cuprous ions (Cu+Cu2+?2Cu+), where cuprous ions precipitate as cuprous chloride; In second step, cuprous oxide is synthesized by adding NaOH into cuprous chloride solution (2CuCl+2NaOH?Cu2O+NaCl+H2O). Optimum conditions were investigated to recover cuprous oxide in the processes. When copper powder was added into wastewater with copper ions, Cu concentration decreased from 15.6% to 2.6% and ORP decreased from 620 mV to -59.9 mV. This result shows that cupric ions reduced into cuprous ions. XRD data indicated that the precipitate was cuprous chloride powder. Using the cuprous chloride recovered and NaOH solution, cuprous oxide was synthesized. To investigate the optimum condition, various NaOH solutions were added into water with CuCl, and then pH, ORP, Cu concentration, Cu contents in precipitates were analysed. XRD data showed that main component of precipitates was cuprous oxide.

Of the 15 million tons of glass discarded in municipal wastes annually, about 2 million tons pass through incinerators and can be recovered by ore processing techniques. Although the primary use for this recovered waste glass would be as cullet in the manufacture of new glass containers, this approach is not always practical because of long shipping distances, high freight costs, and high purity requirements. Alternatives to the use of waste glass as cullet would be either as landfill or in secondary products. Although glass is considered a good landfill material, it is still wasteful of potentially valuable raw materials. Secondary products that can be made from waste glass1 include a variety of industrial and construction items. As part of the Bureau of Mines' program in secondary materials recovery, the Tuscaloosa Metallurgy Research Laboratory has conducted research concerned with the development of ceramic building products from waste glass. Materials employed in this research were obtained from municipal incinerator residues fractionated in the Bureau's continuous residue processing plant, College Park Metallurgy Research center.' The studies reported herein3,4 present research results using waste glass in the formulation and production of clay bricks, not only to produce improved products, but to reduce production costs, conserve natural raw materials, and most important, to reduce manufacturing energy requirements.

In this study, image recognition algorithms, satellite remote sensing and unmanned aerial vehicle photogrammetry (UAVP) were combined to identify surface movement and fissures caused by mining, and a case study was conducted in a coalmine in western China, and the following conclusions were obtained.

The geometallurgical concept has mainly been applied to primary ore deposits, starting from ore characterisation to the economic optimisation of the mining operation. However, as primary ore resources are becoming depleted and lower in grade, alternative sources need to be explored and a question of adaptability of the geometallurgical approach to the secondary resource repositories arises. The particle size distribution, chemical and mineralogical compositions of the Smaltjärnen historical tungsten tailings from physical separation in Yxsjöberg, Sweden were studied using drill core samples collected from different locations within the tailings repository in order to assess the amenability of the tailings to reprocessing. The tailings are dominated by the –600 to +149 μm particle size fraction. This fraction contains most of the elements of interest (W, Cu, S, Sn, Zn, Be, Bi and F) hosted by scheelite, chalcopyrite, pyrrhotite, cassiterite, danalite (both Zn and Be), bismuthinite and fluorite, respectively. The particle size distribution and mineralogical composition vary across the repository, suggesting a possible existence of geometallurgical domains, which require further assessment to evaluate metallurgical performance. This paper is one of a series on mining methods being published by the Bureau of Mines. It describes briefly mining practices at the Sunrise iron mine of the Colorado Fuel & Iron Corp., Platte County, Wyo. The Sunrise mine is in the Hartville iron district in east-central Wyoming (fig. 1). The district covers part of the Hartville Mountains, a region of moderate relief in which erosional features have been formed by the dissection of a low plateau. Altitudes vary from 4,300 feet along the North Platte River to 6,000 feet in the uplift. The climate is semiarid, with hot summers and winter temperatures below zero for short periods. Grasses, cacti, yucca, and low desert shrubs grow at lower elevations. Cottonwood and boxelder trees and willows grow along permanent streams; juniper and coniferous trees are confined to the higher elevations.

Antimony has been used extensively in industry and in everyday life since the 19th century, and antimony sulfides have been known since around 4,000 B.C. Antimony’s most significant applications are as a flame retardant in the manufacture of electronics and textiles, as a catalyst for plastic fabrication, and as paint pigment and fining agent in glassware, opacifier in ceramics and an alloying element in ammunition and battery manufacturing plants. It is also used in vehicle brakes and tires. Brake pads contain stibnite (Sb), the sulfide compound of antimony. In particular, stibnite is used in automobiles as a lubricant, vibration reducer and friction stability improver. Anthropogenic activities are the primary source of antimony in the atmosphere [1,2]. Annual global consumption of antimony has increased to more than 1.4 × 105 t, and China is the most significant producer [2].

The last detailed lint of permissible units was published as Technical Paper 4294/. All of the blasting units of that list have become obsolete or have boon modified as covered by extensions of the original approvals.

Fifteen and 18 pct Ni maraging steel and several binavy and ternary alloys of the iron-rich corner of the Fe-Co-Ni system have been studied. After annealing in the austenite range, these alloys were deformed slightly by cold rolling and subsequently aged. Compavison of experimental measurements at various processing stages indicates that small degrees of deforn~ation (5 to 10 pct reduction in thickness) do not influence hardness and strength or the aging kinetics. Electrical resistivity and ductility are somewhat redu]ced and the coercive force is substantially lower when compared to identical samples which were not deformed. The results are explained in terms of retained austenite which transforms into martensite with the small amount of deformation. RECENTLY there has been increasing interest in maraging steel for applications in electric power generators requiring a high ratio of power to weight.' Fifteen pct Ni maraging steel has been investigated to evaluate its properties and performance for application as high-strength magnetic rotor steel,' and a thorough investigation of the precipitation and transformation processes in this alloy has been conducted in this laboratory.3 The influence of deformation, which preceded the aging treatment, was also studied. It was found that a small deformation in the order of 5 pct has a rather striking effect in reducing the coercive force. Other interesting effects on the properties caused by such deformation have led to the more detailed studies reported herein. EXPERIMENTAL METHOD The methods used to produce the samples from 15 pct Ni maraging steel have been described elsewhere.3 The general procedure of hot forging and cold rolling to sheet has been followed. The composition is included in Table I which also contains the composition of the 18 pct Ni maraging steel grade 250 studied. More data about the material and the processing of the 18 pct Ni maraging steel have been recently reported.4 The experimental alloys of binary and ternary Fe-Ni-Co alloys were made by levitation melting in an argon atmosphere and casting into rod-shaped ingots 7 mm thick weighing 20 g. From these ingots 25-mm-long rods were machined to study the phase transformation by a dilatometer. These rods were then cold-rolled to strips, 2.4 mm thick. Annealing for austenitizing was done in tube furnaces in an argon or helium atmosphere followed by cooling in the water-cooled portion of the tube. Aging was done in a salt bath containing a neutral blend of Alkali nitrates and nitrites. Vickers hardness was measured using a load of 50 kg for 15 sec. Tensile tests were carried out on a hard beam tensile tester at a strain rate of 5 X lo-' per sec using flat samples with a gage length of 37.5 mm and a cross section of 1.25 by 6.25 mm. Estimated sensitivity was 5 K x strain and 0.35 kg per sq mm stress. Magnetic saturation was determined on small cylindrical samples, 2.5 mm in length and diameter, by measuring the force exerted by the gradient of a magnetic field of 1000 oe per cm in a mean field of 11,500 oe. The measured values could be reproduced within *1 pct. Coercive force was measured by a precision-type magnetic field probe in a magnetic coil as described by Foerster.5 The magnetizing field was 1300 oe. The samples were 5 cm long, 1 cm wide, and 2.4 mm thick. he coercive force was measured to within +0.1 oe. Electrical resistivity was measured by using a potentiometer on flat strips with a gage length of 100 mm and a cross section of 2.5 by 0.5 mm. The accuracy of the measurement was 0.1 pct but the reproducibility of the measured specific resistivity among different samples was in the order of 1 pct. The method used to prepare the samples for electron transmission has been reported elsewhere.3 RESULTS Fig. 1 shows the influence of deformation after annealing on the resistivity, hardness, and coercivity. This concept employs a viable energy saving method that uses a solvent to separate oil from particle matter; it can be used in metal forming industries to deoil sludges, oxides, and particle matter that is presently committed to landfill. If oily particles are used in their oily state, severe consequences to environmental control systems such as explosions or filter blinding, occur in the air handling equipment. This is due to the presence of hydrocarbons in the stack gases resulting from the oily particles. After deoiling, the particles can be recycled and the separated oil can be used as a fuel. The process does not produce a waste of it's own and does not harm air or water. It demonstrates the dual benefits of being commercially viable and in the national interest of conserving resources.

In the numbers of the Engineering and Mining Journal of June 27th and July llth, 1874, there appeared some very complete statistics of the working of some anthracite blast-furnaces belonging to a large establishment in this country, followed by calculations of the heat requirements of the furnaces, similar to those which have been made for European furnaces by Mr. I. Lowthian Bell, Prof. Gruner, Prof. Akerman and others. To the author of these valuable papers, Mr. John A. Church, of New York, the thanks of American iron metallurgists are due for this attempt (the first, to my knowledge at least), to attack systematically and scientifically the problem of economy of fuel in our anthracite blast-furnaces, by applying the formulas obtained from European practice and from the experiments of European metallurgists, to the determination of the amounts and the modes of distribution of the heat production and absorption in our furnaces. In order to facilitate a comparison of the results thus obtained for the anthracite furnaces in question with those obtained for the best types of European coke furnaces, I have reduced 60 the same standad of heat units (the product of the ton and the degree Centigrade), and placed side by side, the calculations of the heat requirements of one of the furnaces of the Clarence works, as given by Mr. Bell, of a furnace at Pouzin, on the banks of the Rhone, given by Prof. Gruner, and of the anthracite furnaces for 1869-73, as given by Mr. Church. Table I shows the different conditions of working of the three furnaces, of which Table II gives the respective heat requirements. I have made this latter table in such a manner as to give for each furnace its heat requirements, both according to the views of Mr. Bell and those of Prof. Gruner. Mr. Bell assumes that all the carbonic acid produced by the decomposition of the carbonate of lime of the charge, is reduced to carbonic oxide by contact with solid carbon ; also, that the carbon of t,he pig iron is a portion of that deposited in the ore in the upper part of the furnace, by the dissociation of carbonic oxide. Prof. Gruner, on the other hand, assumes that all the carbonic acid of the carbonates of the charge escapes unreduced, and that the carbon deposited in the upper part. of the furnace, by the dissociation of carbonic oxide, is again converted into carbonic oxide or

Issues between resource utilization and resource preservation often develop in connection with coal mining. One such conflict exists in eastern Utah where PacifiCorp and Energy West Mining Company are working with State and Federal agencies to address the resource recovery/resource preservation dispute. The effects of underground longwall coal mining on golden eagle (Aquila chrysaetos) cliff nesting sites have been studied at the Cottonwood Mine since 1986. Subsidence, escarpment spalling, and the nesting activities of the local eagle population were monitored.
