A simple and rapid three-component analysis procedure has been developed for use in fluid-flow studies. The method is based on refractive index measurements, combined with refractive dispersion measured between the Ha and H wave lengths. The procedure requires. calibration curves for the three-fluid system. The only restriction on the fluids employed is that only one be an aromatzc or olefinic compound. Individual sample measurements require only a few minutes. Composition results within the limits of accuracy required for fluid-flow analog studies are obtained. INTRODUCTION The simultaneous analysis of three-component mixtures is a problem often encountered in fluid-flow analog systems. In petroleum production research, the problem is usually encountered in experiments on the displacement of fluid from a porous medium. In the case of immiscible displacement, simple volumetric measurements of the produced fluids are usually sufficient, the analog fluids often being the actual reservoir fluids themselves — oil, water and gas. However, modern secondary recovery of petroleum sometimes involves production under miscible conditions, in which the oil is displaced by liquefied petroleum gas which, in turn, is displaced by dry gas. Since this type of displacement is done under conditions of pressure and temperature that are not easily reproduced in the laboratory, studies are often performed with analog fluids at essentially atmospheric pressure. Since the number of samples taken during one of these experiments is usually quite large, the time required for analysis becomes an important factor. In the past, the difficulty of conventional analysis has been avoided by the addition of various tracers to one or more of the components, or by the use of a tracer fluid as one of the components. With these techniques, a relatively large amount of analytical time is still required. Moreover, in the case of added tracers, the tracer material may migrate in part to one of the other fluids, may be adsorbed on the solid surfaces of the model, or may introduce side effects not characteristic of the prototype fluid. The substitution of a tracer fluid for one of the components can severely limit the choice of analog fluids. Optical refractometry provides a rapid and economical method of analysis of two-fluid systems or of monitoring small changes in composition of an essentially one-component system. Refractometric methods are capable of high degrees of accuracy, require only very small samples and can easily be adapted to automatic methods. They are not generally applicable, however, where three or more fluids are present over wide ranges of concentration. The method of three-component analysis described here has three essential characteristics. 1. It is based on refractometric measurements and thus preserves all of these desirable properties. 2. It does not make any stringent demands on the choice of fluids that can be analyzed. 3. It is capable of accuracy sufficient for fluid-flow analog studies. THEORETICAL The difference in the refractive index of a substance at two different wave lengths of light is known as its dispersivity. When the difference is taken between the specific refractions at the two wave lengths, the quantity is referred to as the specific dispersivity. Specific refraction was defined empirically by Gladstone and Dale1 as r = n-1/d....[1] where n is the index of refraction and d is the density. Volume II of this two-part series on Submarine Tailings Disposal (STD) as a tailings management option for coastal and island mines contains descriptions of lesser known case histories. The Misima gold mine (Papua New Guinea) and the Black Angel lead-zinc mine (Greenland) are described in some detail as the best documented cases. Atlas copper mine (The Philippines) is less fully described due to relative lack of documentation. The Misima and Atlas STD systems are working to their design criteria. At Black Angel the system adopted did not prevent contamination for a number of reasons, which are now understood. Two cases are described where STD is being developed. They are the Cayeli Bakir copper mine Turkey), and the Toquepala and Cuajone mines (Peru). There is excellent documentation available for both cases. Three case histories are described where tailings have reached the sea either through beach or river discharge. In one case the STD option has been explored (Marcopper Mine, The Philippines). In the others we explore in hindsight whether STD might have been a viable alternative using the Screening Criteria that this Volume develops - see below. The mines are Bougainville Copper Mine in Papua New Guinea, and Jordan River Mine (Canada). There is potential for STD at all three sites. Finally, the Volume presents Screening Criteria for appraising STD, based on the experience in design, operation and environmental impact reviewed in the case histories.

Tundish is the last reactor where significant metallurgical operations can still be done. Calcium aluminate slags are able to positively contribute to metallurgy considering oxide separation, protection against reoxidation and preclusion of resulphurisation. However, these are poor insulators. When using low melting point slags it is necessary to use another covering material. The deviation from saturation can be used as a measure of absorption capacity. By utilizing computerized construction of ternary and quaternary diagrams it is possible to compare different slags and to find proper slag compositions with reasonable capacity to dissolve inclusions. Objective of the present technical contribution is to evaluate tundish slag capacity to absorb inclusions, considering a particular tundish industrial slag and the changes in its chemical composition during continuous casting of steel. It was observed that slag composition changed during the continuous casting process; this variation is possibly related to interaction between the CaO-Al2O3 liquid slag and the rice hull ash layer which is used above it. Computational thermodynamics was used to determine activity of alumina dissolved in liquid slag; it was observed that the variation in slag composition did not change slag capacity to absorb inclusions, since precipitation of Al2O3 solid phases is not predicted.

One of the main functions of rock mechanics research has been to find ways of determining in-situ stresses. Many methods have been suggested, the most significant ones calling for measurements inside bore- holes. These methods usually employ some instrumentation for the purpose of measuring hole deformation. Several years ago, a new method was suggested by Scheidegger,l based on previous work by Hubbert and Willis.2 It was the method of "hydraulic fracturing," which had been introduced by the oil industry in 1948 for the purpose of oil-well production stimulation. Basically, hydraulic fracturing consists of sealing off a section of a borehole, pumping in a fluid, and pressurizing it until fracture occurs. If pumping is continued vigorously, the fracture is opened up and extended. In an oil field, such an artificial fracture increases the overall permeability of the formation and usually enhances production. During the entire operation, the variation of pressure with time is ordinarily recorded. Hubbert,2 Scheidegger,1 Kehle,3 and others have shown that the recorded pressures can be theoretically related to the magnitudes of the principal in-situ stresses; the orientation of the fracture can often be used to determine the direction of the principal stresses. The advantage of hydraulic fracturing over the present in-situ stress determination methods is simplicity: no sophisticated instrumentation is required inside the borehole; hence, the stresses can be measured at any depth. Os aços ferramenta para trabalho a frio são utilizados em diversas aplicações em decorrência de propriedades como elevada estabilidade dimensional, alta resistência ao desgaste e elevada temperabilidade. Tais características estão diretamente associadas à microestrutura do material, isto é, à quantidade, à distribuição, ao tipo e à morfologia dos carbonetos presentes e à quantidade de martensita revenida e austenita retida. Neste contexto, no presente trabalho foram caracterizados mecanicamente e microestruturalmente quatro aços ferramenta para trabalho a frio empregados na fabricação de cilindros de laminação a frio. Para isso, amostras foram retiradas dos próprios cilindros e foram realizadas análises de dureza, microscopia óptica, microscopia eletrônica de varredura, espectroscopia por energia dispersiva e espectroscopia de emissão atômica por plasma. De acordo com resultados, uma comparação entre as propriedades dos aços foi conduzida visando concluir qual deles é o mais adequado para a referida aplicação.

RECORD production of marble, kaolin, scrap mica, and talc high-lighted the mineral industry of Alabama in 1962. Among the States, Alabama ranked second in scrap mica, third in the production of bauxite and native asphalt, and fifth in iron ore. The mineral industry of Alabama was dominated by mining and processing of coal and iron ore, and the manufacture of cement, which together comprised 73 percent of the total value of production, compared with 72 percent in 1961. Other important industries were the production of crude petroleum, and stone quarrying. Leading companies were Tennessee Coal & Iron, Southern Cement Co., Southeastern Electric Generating Co., Alabama By-Products Corp., and U.S. Pipe & Foundry Co.

The most common approach used in the mining industry for mineral resources modeling is to estimate the grades using ordinary kriging and report the recoverable resources based on this deterministic estimated model. Mineral resources calculated with kriging are a smooth representation of the actual distribution of grades and do not provide an assessment of uncertainty. Unlike kriging, simulation reproduces the variability of the grades in the mineral deposit and provides an assessment of uncertainty. Reporting mineral resources directly on high-resolution simulation results would assume perfect knowledge of the grade at the time of mining and selectivity at the scale of the data. There will always be uncertainty left at the time of mining, so assuming perfect knowledge of the grade in the future is incorrect. There are two concerns when geostatistical simulation is used for resources modeling: the information and the mining selectivity effects. A new framework for resource estimation is proposed with two separate modules to address those concerns. The information effect is accounted for by anticipating the additional production data that will be available at the time mining to guide the destination for the mined material. The mining selectivity effect is addressed by mimicking the grade control procedure to get mineable dig limits at a chosen selectivity, represented by a minimum mineable unit size. In addition to a prediction of recoverable resources that will be closer to the material mined in the future, the framework proposed provides an assessment of local and global uncertainty for risk management.

This has been done by reducing- transport losses in the bulk p and n regions of the diode and combining many of. these diodes into series stacks with common optical cazlities. The result of this effort is a nearly monochromati source at about 8450A With a luminous areu 0.05 by The GaAs laser diode is an attractive pulsed light source in the near ir because of its ability to emit very large pulse powers and its small size. In addition to this, the device is efficient; and the higher the 0.05 cm emitting peak pulse po we rs at greater than 300 LC at repetition rates below 200 pps into a cone about 0.01 steradians when operated at 77°K. The results of nzeasuvetnents of peak optical power and spectra frorr~ these stacks are reported and some conclusions are drawn about the vole the individual diodes play in the stacked operation. peak output power, the more efficient it is. Iron is a significant component of all copper concentrates leached in the HydroCopperTM process. The metals in the concentrate are leached in a chloride solution by oxidation with cupric ions. Copper enters into the solution as a cuprous chloro¬complex. Iron dissolves at the same time in the ferrous form, but it is immediately oxidized to the ferric state. Oxidation is effected by sparging air or oxygen into the leaching reactors. Because the pH is 1 - 2.5, ferric ion precipitates as akaganeite (T<90°C) or hematite (T> 90°C). Arsenic, antimony and the main part of the bismuth co-precipitate with iron and report to the leach residue. Cupric leaching is faster than iron oxidation; thus, leaching of low-iron concentrates (secondary copper minerals) is quicker than leaching high iron concentrates (chalcopyrite). Pyrite does not dissolve during copper leaching, but is oxidized slowly at higher redox-potentials after the copper has been leached.

For the past 50 years, the primary crushing of stone at the Dolase Bros. Co. Richards Spur Quarry. 13 miles north of Lawton, Oklahoma, has been accomplished by a Traylor 42-inch gyratory crusher. The production capacity of the primary system, consisting of a feeder, grizzly, and the gyratory crusher, was approximately 2100 tons per hour. Shot-down scone was hauled from the working face about one mile to the feeder by a fleet of Caterpillar Model 773&apos;s and WABCO 60- and 65-ton trucks. In order to maintain production, nine to ten trucks and four Caterpillar Model 992 front-end loaders were required to be operational at all times.

Prospectivity, the relative value of gold, investor confidence, general economic stability and legislation driven by public attitudes are seen as the major influences on the gold mining industry in New Zealand. Since the 1860s the gold mining industry in New Zealand has been subject to the complex interaction of these influences resulting in three successive boom and bust periods. The booms are related to periods of greatest potential economic growth. The busts are more strongly related to downturns in the economy and falling gold price. The influences may be expressed as trends over time. The role of gold has changed from being a currency base to that of a traded commodity. This change has caused price instability and rapid fluctuations in its value. Increased competing land uses, shifting public attitudes and legislative changes have added to the instability of the industry. Reaction against change is to be expected from the companies until new legislation is seen to be functioning efficiently. Other trends show that there has been a tendency towards reduced exploration and consolidation of active gold mining projects. The future consequences of this are likely to be felt both regionally and nationally as there will be no new discoveries to fill production voids which will develop as currently producing mines close. The review of New Zealand&apos;s resource use statutes is nearly complete. A period of legislative stability can now be expected. There are some positive signs that consents will be obtained much more quickly than under previous legislation, particularly by those companies which develop the skills to work with the system. The new regime is about consideration of impacts rather than specific activities. This, together with excellent prospectivity, bodes well for the identification of mineral resources in New Zealand.

The long and often undefined period in the post-mining phase challenges geo-monitoring with its various responsibilities, like the detection of environmental changes, ground movements and water management. Modern methods of geo- and environmental monitoring observe numerous aspects using active and passive sensors with multispectral, hyperspectral and microwave sensors, with diverse spatial dimensions and spatiotemporal resolutions from satellites, Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs), in-situ sensors. Data integration, together with on-site knowledge and experience, provides the basis for comprehensive modeling, which improves the understanding of the environmental changes and their related causes, which is an essential step for public acceptance. In this paper, we aim to give a brief overview of various geo- and environmental monitoring methods.

The U.S. Geological Survey recently completed a digital coal resource assessment model of the Upper Pennsylvanian Pittsburgh coal bed which indicates that of the original 34 billion short tons [31 billion tonnes] of coal, 16 billion short tons [14 billion tonnes] remain after subtracting mined-out coal. When technical, environmental, and social restrictions are applied to the remaining Pittsburgh coal model, only12 billion short tons [11 billion tonnes] are available for mining. Our assessment models estimate that up to 0.61 billion short tons [0.55 billion tonnes], 2.7billion short tons [2.4 billion tonnes], and 8.5 billion short tons [7.7 billion tonnes] could be available for surface mining, continuous mining, and longwall mining, respectively. This analysis is an example of a second-generation regional coal availability study designed to model recoverability characteristics for all the major coal beds in the U.S.

THE underground haulage system in the lead-silver mine of the-Bunker Hill & Sullivan Co., situated at Kellogg, Idaho, is the most extensive in the Coeur d&apos;Alène district, comprising about 35,000 ft. of tunnels, drifts, and cross-cuts where locomotive haulage is in use. The main working adit, known as the Kellogg tunnel, or No. 9 level, is approximately 10,000 ft. in length from the portal to the main working shaft and extends beyond that about 4,500 ft. in each of two directions. On this level all the ore from the Bunker Hill & Sullivan, the Sierra Nevada Consolidated, and the Caledonia Mining Co. an average of 44,600 tons per month-is hauled to the mills, located a short distance from the portal. Electric haulage by the trolley-type locomotive is used on this level throughout. Below this level, at intervals of 200 ft. vertically, are five other working levels (Nos. 10, 11, 12, 13, and 14); and the total haulage distance on these, where electric locomotives are used, is approximately 16,000 ft. No. 13 level has but recently been opened up and is not working-to capacity; while the main cross-cut on No. 14 has just been started, and has no need of power haulage. Of the four levels equipped with electric haulage, Nos. 11, 12, and 13 have storage-battery locomotives, and No. 10 still retains the trolley type by reason of the small and decreasing tonnage produced.

The BGMR has developed a method for an online-analysis during drilling processes in cooperation with Fraunhofer Institute for Laser Technology in Aachen and various industrial partners. This allows for efficient utilization of deposits, maximum recovery of desired minerals and frequent and costefficient updates of deposit models. The used method, namely laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS), was implemented into a compact demonstrator in order to analyze drill dust and loosened material within mining environments and directly on drill rigs. The consequently developed OFURanalyzer (OFUR ? online-analysis of mineral deposits) provides possibilities for exploration and visualization of deposit models in real-time and thus creates an opportunity for innovative applications, such as contactless, continuous quality control of minerals throughout the extraction process. A major challenge in the execution of this project was the necessity to develop a laser system that could withstand rough mining environments dominated by dust, shocks, vibration and therefore would be suited to operate under such conditions.

"Abstract Helical piles have been used as anchors and for supporting lightly loaded structures as a method of underpinning, etc in the past. Recently, helical piles are being used to support new structures because of their simple installation process using relatively light and mobile equipment. This paper presents the results of evaluation and design performed for the temporary support of existing piers during a bridge rehabilitation project.INTRODUCTIONThe helical screw foundation was invented and patented by Alexander Mitchell in England in 1833. He installed screw piles to support lighthouses in the tidal basins of England. Many applications in the earlier years in the USA were in North Carolina and in Florida to support lighthouses (in coastal plain deposits). A lighthouse of similar foundation design is still in use at Key Biscayne, Florida.In the USA, the helical piles were reintroduced as foundation elements for electrical transmission towers. Helical piles were also used for anchoring guys of self supported towers and as tie-backs for excavation support systems. Typically, helical piles are being used for supporting lightly loaded buildings and for underpinning buildings undergoing distress as a means of remediation. The helical piles are not commonly used in the transportation industry.HELICAL PILESHelical pile is a segmented deep foundation system with helical bearing plates welded to a central steel shaft. Load is transferred from the shaft to the soil through these bearing plates. Central steel shafts are available in either a square shaft (Type SS) or a round shaft (Type RS). The Type SS series are available in 38 mm to 57 mm square sizes. The Type RS series are available in 73 mm to 114 mm diameter sizes. Type SS-RS combinations are also available for compression applications in soil conditions where dense/hard soils must be penetrated with softer/loose soils above the bearing strata.The leading segment consists of a shaft with one or more helical plates that are welded to the shaft. The plates vary in diameter from 203 mm to 355.5 mm and have a thickness of 9.5 mm or 13.7 mm. Typically the plate diameter increases from the bottom of the shaft upward. A helical bearing plate or helix is one pitch of a screw thread. All helices, regardless of their diameter, have a standard 76 mm pitch. Being a true helical shape, the helices do not auger into the soil but rather screw into it with minimal soil disturbance. Helical plates are generally spaced a distance of two to three times the diameter of the plate directly below in order for them to function independently as individual bearing elements. The geostatistical Discrete Gaussian (DG) model is demonstrated to be capable of providing an effective means of implementing change of support for Enterprise-style mineralisation and thus providing reliable global recoverable resource estimates. At Enterprise, sample grade distribution proves to be highly positively skewed, therefore significant deskewing of the histogram and reduction of variance occurs when going from sample to block support. The DG model was experimentally tested in&apos;the Southern Primary Zone (SPZ) at Enterprise, where high anisotropy ratios and pronounced short range structures are observed in variograms. The experimental test was run for a change of support for which the variance reduction was. approximately 60 per cent. This reduction is similar to that predicted by Krige&apos;s Relationship (&apos;the volume-variance relationship&apos;) for the practical situation of a change of support from 5 m vertical blasthole samples to 3 m x 8 m x 5 m selective mining unit (SMU) blocks. The DG model was found to correctly predict the grade tonnage relationships for a wide range of cut off grades. The experimental test indicated that, given a representative histogram and variogram, the DG change of support provides a computationally efficient and practical means of reliably assessing global mineable resources at the early stages of a mining project. Further, it allows a range of selectivity strategies to be meaningfully and comparatively considered prior to mining.

Yesterday, air pollution was somebody else&apos;s problem -- today, it is everybody&apos;s problem. The coal industry with thermal coal drying, is aware of their problem and the necessity of doing an acceptable job; however, there is much to be said as to how good a job is required and what performance limits should be set up. American Air Filter Company has been one of the pioneers in the solution of the thermal coal dryer dust problems, Because of high moisture content, products of combustion and occasional temperature surges, only wet collection has been considered as the practical approach. Our first installation goes back some 12 years with a total to date of 29 Individual wet collectors, each, fabricated of suitable corrosion-resistant material, at 14 operating plants. To eliminate a potential air pollution problem, a performance requirement of not more than approximately one-quarter (1/4) grains per cubic foot in the dust collector discharge was used. In nearly all installations, operating performance surpassed requirements, but discharge stacks were not entirely free of discoloration. However, plant nuisance and air pollution complaints were eliminated. This satisfactory performance was accomplished by medium priced wet dust collectors operating at a 4-6" W.G. pressure drop with cater drain requirements of about 1 gallon of drain water per 1000 cubic feet of air exhausted.

A large number of blast furnace slag-metal tests were examined to determine if the manganese reduction could be used as a primary indicator of the degree of oxidation or reduction of the slag and of its desulphurizing power. Slag basicity and temperature were also evaluated. Two laboratory heats were made and sampled prior to reaching equilibrium to check blast furnace data. IN a recent investigation of the factors affecting desulphurization in the blast furnace, is was evident that manganese reduction appeared to parallel the course of desulphurization. Grant, Kalling, and Chipman1 pointed this out in a series of time studies utilizing closely controlled laboratory melts. Fig. 1 is a composite plot of sulphur removal and manganese reduction as a function of time under two slags of different basicity. Manganese reduction appears to approach equilibrium at approximately the same rate as does sulphur. It was also demonstrated that the addition of oxygen to the slag, as manganese oxide, caused a sharp reversal of sulphur from the slag to the metal.&apos; It has been shown that "Excess CaO" was a primary factor in measuring the degree of desulphurization under ideal reducing conditions,1,2 the following reaction being representative of the process: CaO (slag) + S + C (solid) = CaS(slag) + CO (gas) It was also evident that a second reaction could drive the sulphur from the slag into the metal. A suggested reaction was&apos; CaS (slag) + 0 = CaO (slag) + S Any change in the oxidizing power of the system would thus affect both the sulphur and the manganese without causing any change in the calculated basicity of the slag. "Excess CaO," "Excess Base," and other similar basicity values, under such oxidizing conditions, would therefore not be the best measure of desulphurizing power; instead, as was shown by and Chipman" he oxygen content of the slag at low oxygen levels would be the controlling factor. Unfortunately, the extent to which FeO is reduced in the blast furnace makes it difficult to utilize slag FeO as an accurate indicator of the degree of oxidation.
