The use of the Scanning Electron Microscope to characterize Coal Mine Dust has been possible because of two circumstances. First, the imaging process of the SEM allows multiple signals (secondary electrons, back scattered electrons, x-ray emission, etc.) to be viewed. Second, the use of a computer to analyze the signals and perform statistical tests on the results. The parameters described are size, shape, chemical composition, mass distributions, and particle thickness. Although the system is intended for particular systems, those of agglomerates (whether tile same or not) are handled by special aspects of the computer programs. The work on fibers is not completed at the time of this report. This work discusses the hardware (developed especially for this process) and software (both on an IBM 360/370 and a PDP 11/20). The latter system allows direct interaction between the operator of the SEM and computer for maximum information at the least time.

Incorporation of heat exchangers into drilled shaft foundations is a novel approach to both improve the energy efficiency of building heat pump systems and provide necessary structural support using the same construction materials. In an effort to quantify the structural and heat exchange performance of deep foundations used as ground-source heat pumps, two instrumented test foundations were constructed as part of a new construction project in Denver, CO. They will be integrated into the conventional ground-source heat pump system for the building. This paper focuses on the lessons learned from the construction process for these energy foundations.

When ore was discovered on the Tintic Standard property in the spring of 1916, new developments were immediately started both north and south of that property, on the supposition that in East Tintic the ore would be found to occur in northerly trending channels, similar to those so characteristic of the older camp. But 9 years of developments have failed to establish the existence of such a channel. This is due undoubtedly to important differences in the geology of the two camps, that were not recognized, and is indicative of the danger in the general tendency toward interpreting the geology of East Tintic too strictly in terms of that of the older camp. It should not be forgotten that while the two sections have had practically the same geological history, the net results of a long series of geologic processes have developed in them conditions that differ so widely and in so many particulars that the necessity of regarding them as essentially different districts seems apparent. In an effort to emphasize this fact, this paper is devoted chiefly to a comparison of the geological conditions as found in the two camps and is addressed more particularly to those familiar with the geology of the Tintic district. Following a short description of the several ore discoveries and of the Tintic Standard mine is a brief discussion of the evidence of ore channels in East Tintic. East Tintic District The Term East Tintic district is here used to represent that eastern part of the Tintic mining district lying between the productive portion of the old camp of Tintic on the west, the foot hills of Goshen Slope, on the east, the Denver and Rio Grande Railroad on the north, and Silver Pass on the south, all in Utah County. As represented by the geological map, Fig. 1, it includes an area about 4 miles wide, east and west, and 5 miles long, north and south, within which the Tintic Standard mine is about centrally located. DUWEZ1 has shown that pure titanium and pure zirconium transform martensitically during rapid cooling at temperatures about 30° and 15°C re spectively below their To temperatures. Holden et al.2 determined M, temperatures of Ti-Cu alloys by a metallographic technique applied to isothermally treated samples. Their results, superposed on the McQuillan3 version of the partial Ti-Cu diagram are shown in Fig. 1. Sources of metals were: Titanium: Iodide bar; Foote Mineral Co. Ltd. Zirconium: Iodide bar; Foote Mineral Co. LM. Copper: Spectrographic Standard; Johnson Matthey and Co. Ltd. Alloys were prepared by levitation melting under argon to the following nominal compositions:* 0.5, Quenching, at rates to about 8000°C per sec, was performed by cooling in a stream of helium (99.999 pct pure) a 3/64 in. cube of material previously heated by a tungsten coil in a system operating at. 10-5 mm Hg. Cooling rates below 200°C per sec w were obtained by controlling the current to the heater coil. The specimen was supported on a 32 gage Pt, Pt-Rh thermocouple attached through a DC amplifier to an Edin magnetic oscillograph (Model 8082) with a maximum chart speed of 250 mm per sec. Transformation temperatures were read off the oscillograph charts at the location of the beginning of the thermal arrest. The same specimen was quenched several times, and all runs were repeated on new samples. Regular calibrations of the oscillograph against a potentiometer were made between quenching experiments. The criterion of martensite formation was the effect of surface rumpling. Previously polished samples that showed a rumpled surface after transformation are assumed to have undergone martens itic transformation: transformations of a diffusion type produce no surface disturbance, Figs. 2 and 3. DURING the year 1907 an investigation of the Clinton formation in New York has been carried out under the direction of the State Geologist, and a full account of the results has been prepared for publication.1 The more important economic features of the report are summarized in the present paper. Previous knowledge of this, the type, section of the Clinton has been contributed mostly by Hall and Vanuxem in their reports for the Natural History Survey of New York, which were issued in their final form in 1842-43. Brief accounts of the ore-occurrences have been given by B. T. Putnam,2 J. C. Smock,3 A. H. Chester,4 and E. C. Eckel.5 Prof. C. H. Smyth, Jr.,6has discussed the origin of the Clinton ores in two papers, which, so far as the local occurrences are concerned, have removed all doubt that may have existed on that subject. This paper presents an overview of the strategy adopted to bring the Ballymoney opencut lignite deposit to an advanced stage of mine design and confidence. Certain aspects of the project differentiate it from the normal Australian experience. These include the thick overlying glacial drift, the proximity to established infrastructure and the wide fluctua- tions in annual lignite demand. The incorporation of these factors in the mine plan are discussed. The deposit area is located near the town of Ballymoney, in Northern Ireland. In July 1986, after winning an internationally competitive tender, Meekatharra Minerals Ltd commenced an exploration programme designed to delineate reserves to supply a 450 MW power station. In less than eighteen months, a complete evaluation was undertaken and a price submitted in December 1987 to the relevant authorities for the supply of lignite. Subsequently, UK government consultants and significant inter- national banks have endorsed the findings. The mining study commenced with the evaluation of various develop- ment strategies, followed by selection of the most viable mining method and equipment. The equipment selected will mine four million tonnes of lignite and eleven million cubic metres of waste each year. In year 15, the waste removal requirement increases to almost seventeen million cubic metres. This results in an average strip ratio over the mine life of three cubic metres of waste per tonne of lignite. The quality of the product delivered to the run of mine conveyor transfer point, based on maximum resource recovery, will include heat content of 8813 kJ/kg (3789 Btu/Ib), ash content of 28% and moisture content of 40%.

A number of cooperative studies have been carried out as preliminary work for drafting a standard for application of granulated slag sand for concrete, and the following conclusions were reached 1 The ten kinds of granulated slag sands pro- duced in Japan satisfy the national standard for fine aggregate in terms of physical and chemical properties. 2 Mortar and concrete tests conducted with granulated slag sand revealed that, although with slight differences in the extent, gran- ulated slag sands used in these tests were applicable'as fine aggregate for concrete, 3 The pumpability test by a concrete pump carried out on concrete with two kinds of now commercially available granulated slag sand demonstrated that the pump pressure feeding is applicable in the same manner as in the case of ordinary concrete. These tests permitted' preparation of a draft standard for application of granulated slag sand, and the results formed the first step toward utilizing this material as a sub- stitute for natural sand.

"The paper describes the author's experiences in the startup of autogenous and semiautogenous grinding circuits gained over the last twenty years on both large and small grinding circuits. Typical phases in commissioning from construction to startup with ore are covered. The paper also describes experiences with material handling systems, slurry pumping, vibrating screens, trommel screens and pebbles crushing systems. INTRODUCTIONThe commissioning of any new mineral processing plant is an important and exciting milestone in any project. It is at this point in time that the efforts of developers, design engineers, equipment suppliers and operators culminate in a finished product. The successful completion of any project requires that the plant achieve design throughput as quickly as possible. The success of any startup can generally be anticipated by the amount of careful planning which takes place before equipment is operated. The first part of this paper describes the steps in going from construction through to introduction of ore. The organization and planning of startup activities is also covered.The second part of this paper describes some typical problem areas and past experiences in the startup of semi-autogenous grinding circuits. Semi-autogenous grinding circuits present some special challenges in the startup phase. The description of some of these problems and experiences will hopefully provide other operators with suggestions on how to avoid (or at least prepare for) these problems."

In overburden cast blasting the explosive energy is used to move a significant percentage of overburden from the high wall to the spoil pile thus reducing the amount of material to be handled by machinery. However, the obvious trade-off between the extra explosive energy in the cast blast versus reduced dragline effort is complicated by an increased risk of damage to the underlying coal. This damage may not be obvious but inevitably leads to reduced coal recovery and may negate much of the benefit sought from cast blasting.

En este aspecto, es importante el uso de dichos equipos en el tratamiento de minerales puesto que extraen el máximo de su valor y reducen mínimamente su fundición en el país y el extranjero. Sin embargo, su buen funcionamiento no se limita a una óptima estructura del los equipos, o por la resonancia de su empleo, sino que responde a los operadores de plantas. Durante mucho tiempo,la mayoria de personal empleado en esta labor, se rehusó a trabajar con tales equipos dado sus hábitos, y si lo hacían era más una cuestión de aceptación que de propio conocimiento, tornándose la máquina, como algo secundario. Ante esta situación, se buscó formas de superar dicho problema a través de la enseñanza de los entrenadores, como del interés del trabajador, obteniéndose óptimos resultados en poco tiempo.

The exploitation of stone (trachyte) at the ?Srebro? open pit mine, located on the northern slopes of the Fru?ka Gora National Park (Serbia) central area begun in 1964. Stone exploitation in this locality does not endanger the environment in an ecological sense, does not pose a threat to plants and animals, and apart from the terrain configuration changes, it did not leave behind permanent consequences to the environment. Projects for permanent cessation of mining operations and for land reclamation and spatial arrangement were completed in these circumstances. The paper gives a short review of the condition at the open pit mine; furthermore, the key problems and basic demands are presented, together with a concept of technical and biological land reclamation and the spatial arrangement of the mining complex. Although hydrocarbons accounted for more than 60% of Bahrain's income and more than 80% of export earnings, this island nation sustained one of the more diversified economies in the Gulf Region. The availability of low-cost natural gas for electric power has fostered the development of a significant aluminum refining and manufacturing industry with emphasis on vertical integration. The Bahraini iron pelletization plant, closed since 1986 due to financial problems, was scheduled to reopen by early 1989. Commodity Review Metals.-Aluminum.-Aluminium Bah-rain Bsc (Alba) attained record high production levels in 1988 taking advantage of favorable aluminum prices, which averaged over $2,000 per ton as compared with less than $1,500 per ton in 1987. Net aluminum production was nearly 13,000 tons over design capacity. Fewer standard ingots (52,081 tons as compared with 79,685 in 1987) were produced as Alba concentrated on higher value added products such as rolling ingots (42,324 tons as compared with 32,125 tons) and extrusion billets (60,934 tons as compared with 46,618 tons).

Northwest Alloys, a wholly owned subsidiary of Alcoa, produces magnesium from dolomite by reduction with ferro silicon and aluminum. This process produces alkaline by-products in quantities that allow their consideration for use as commercial by-products. Two such products are dicalcium silicate slag, Di-Cal, and magnesium oxide condensate, MgO. The alkaline properties of these materials offer acid neutralizing capability comparable to the traditionally used lime, therefore, warranting a study for their use in applications where the neutralization of acidic waters or process solutions is required, such as treatment of mine waters. In this ongoing study, three mine waters (Bunker Hill Mine, Berkeley Pit, and Blackbird Mine) were selected for treatment with Di-Cal and MgO. Lime was used as the background control. The solid precipitates were subsequently contacted with pure water at four different pH conditions for stability testing of prepared metal precipitates (expanded TCLP). It was found that neutralization with Di-Cal results in precipitates which are of equivalent to superior stability than those from lime treatment.

Caving offers the lowest cost per ton of ally large-scale mining method, but its successful application demands an ore body that conforms to several rigid requirements. The deposit must be of wide areal extent, massive and not spotty in ore values, and insensitive to ore dilution. It must also be a rock mass that breaks up readily. There are only three active caving operations in the US-Climax, Henderson, and San Manuel-but caving methods have recently-taken on new importance as deeper, lower grade mineral occurrences and ore bodies are found. These deposits are too deep for surface mining methods, and too low grade to support any type of underground mining except a bulk method such as caving.

This report describes the preparation characteristics of significant coalbeds in Kanawha County , W. Va . It is one in a series of Federal Bureau of Mines reports planned to determine coals suitable for producing metallurgical coke , either as mined or after beneficiation . Almost 9.4 million tons of coal was produced in Kanawha County , W. Va . , in 1959 , of which about 67 percent was cleaned mechanically in 10 cleaning plants . It has been estimated that more than 5,505 million tons remain in the county . Samples were collected from Pittsburgh , Stockton - Lewiston , Winifrede , Cedar Grove , Peerless , Upper Kittanning , Coalburg , Powellton , Eagle A , No. 2 Gas , and the Lower Kittanning beds . These beds were selected by the Bureau based on current production rates and estimated minable reserves . Float - and - sink tests of the samples collected from Eagle A , Peerless , Cedar Grove , Winifrede , and No. 2 Gas beds show that these coals at one location each are suitable for metallurgical use without washing . Lower Kittanning bed at four locations ; Pittsburgh , Stockton - Lewiston , and No. 2 Gas beds at two locations each ; and Coalburg , Powellton , Winifrede , Peerless , Upper Kittanning , and Cedar Grove beds at one location each can be upgraded to metallurgical quality by mechanical cleaning . Crushing the samples to 3/ 8- inch top size increased yields substantially at 1.30 specific gravity of Pittsburgh ( 17.5 percentage points ) and Upper Kittanning ( 13.0 percentage points ) beds and increased yield for the other beds sampled to a lesser amount . At this specific gravity , finer crushing caused In the 1.58 specific gravity float a general decrease in ash and sulfur . fractions of the other samples tested , most of the yields , and ash and sulfur contents , were lowered slightly by finer crushing .

"The results of Mr. Klymowsky's research confirm the essential role played by oxidation products in the flotation of base metal sulphides. They invite a discussion on the subject of aeration which I may open by a brief description of the development and current practice of aeration. The first installation of pre-flotation aeration in Canadian milling practice was undertaken during the years 1928 and 29 at the then new Noranda Mill. C.G. McLachlan and his collaborators demonstrated that the flotation differential between chalcopyrite and iron sulphides was enhanced by aeration in soda ash alkaline pulps. The ores treated contained more than 80 per cent sulphides. It was proposed already then that the products of mineral oxidation assisted copper and retarded iron sulphides, at least pyrrhotite flotation. The concentration of thiosulphates was used as a measure of the progress of oxidation. Several papers by C.G. McLachlan elaborate on this subject.The aerator was also used as classifier since it was held that aeration, i.e. controlled oxidation, should go hand in hand with creation of new mineral surfaces. Grinding mills and aerators were placed in closed circuit. Figure 1. This aeration was essential for successful separation at Noranda.Following the application of aeration at Noranda the technique was applied to existing mills in N.W. Quebec. Impressive improvements in concentrate grades and recoveries were obtained. It was observedthat the zinc flotation benefitted from aeration as much as the preceding copper float. In the late forties and fifties the aerator classifier was installed in new mills associated with the Noranda group. A diagrammatic sketch of the Quemont flow-sheet (figure 2) may serve as a typical example."

Silica sand is one of the world's most plentiful resources and is a basic necessity in our way of life. The end uses of silica sand are an integral part of our homes, transportation, and places of work. The environmental legislation enacted in the early 1970's, coupled with the oil embargo and higher than normal inflation, have had a very real impact on the industry and its primary consumers, the foundries and glass producers. The present environmental laws directed at air and water pollution and the working environment can, in most cases, be met, but not without large capital expenditures for equipment. These expenditures must reduce the funds available for expansion and modernization of existing processes which are necessary if the costs to produce industrial sand are to remain at acceptable levels. The concern for the future is the enactment of more stringent laws, and the available technology and equipment to economically comply with them.

The liberation of intimately disseminated impurities from the coal matrix often demands that the material be ground to a high degree of fineness. Similarly, some technologies for coal utilization require superfine particles (i.e., sizes less than ten microns). This implies additional costs for coal preparation plants due to the high energy and media costs associated with fine grinding operations. Besides, there are problems such as sever product contaminations due to media wear and impairment of the quality of coal. Hence, proper choice of grinding media type is important from the viewpoints of cost reduction and product quality.

Tantalum capacitor is a small-sized and has large capacity, and is indispensable for electric equipment. The demand increases year by year, and a quite large number of used tantalum capacitors is generated. Recovery of tantalum from tantalum condenser is recently important since production of tantalum have not been stable for the price and the quality. However, recovery of tantalum from tantalum-condenser is difficult since tantalum parts strongly cover with the flame retardant resin made of halogenated compound (mold resin). This research investigated recovery of tantalum parts from tantalum condenser using steam gasification with mixed molten carbonate. Mixed molten carbonate (Na2CO3:K2CO3:Li2CO3 = 1:1:1) (3 g) put into the reactor, and heated with electric furnace while flowing nitrogen (160 mL/min) and steam (1 mL/min) warmed by heater. After heating to setting temperature (450 - 650 oC), tantalum condenser (3 g) was put into the reactor, heated for 5-10 min, and then cooled to room temperature to recover the reacted capacitor by filtration after treating with distilled water. At relatively low temperature (550 oC) heating for 10 min, mold resin can be decomposed by using steam gasification with mixed molten carbonate, in comparison with using pyrolysis and steam gasification without carbonate, and decomposition reaction occurred over 500 oC by using steam gasification with mixed carbonate. Recovery of tantalum parts from capacitor is successful using steam gasification with mixed molten carbonate at 530 oC for 5 min, due to the effective decomposition and removal of mold resin from capacitor. Furthermore, most halogen gas generated from decomposition of mold resin can be trapped in molten carbonate not to exhaust halogen gas. These results suggested that recovery process of tantalum parts from used condenser using steam gasification with mixed molten carbonate is expected as a feasible way to recycle the rare metal in electric equipment.
