The Takasima Coal Mines comprise four islands near the entrance to Nagasaki Harbour, and are owned and worked by the Mitsu Bishi Company.There are several unusual features in the occurrence and working of these coal seams, the steep angle of "dip," the numerous seams of good coal separated by hundreds of feet of sedimentary rocks, the extensive faulting of the strata, and the way in which the coal is won, when so little surface is available for works, and where there is the ever present danger of subsidence of the roof and consequent flooding of the workings by the ocean. The author trusts that short notes on these few points will be of interest to members.The Islands are named respectively Hasima (Extreme Island), Nakanosima (Middle Island), Takasima (High Island), and Yokosima, and are situated about one mile from the main land.

"In this study, we characterize the high-temperature deformation of typical “Class I” solid solution Al-Mg alloys as a superplastic elongation attributable to the solute drag creep of dislocations. The second-phase particles formed by adding Fe or Si as impurity atoms to the Al-Mg alloys impeded the gliding motion of dislocations, thereby decreasing their hot ductility and resulting in cavity formation. High-temperature tensile tests were performed with initial strain rates in the range of 1×10–3 to 1×10–1 s–1 at air temperatures 673–723 K. The dominant high-temperature deformation mechanism in these alloys was the solute drag creep controlled by the interdiffusion of Mg in Al. In this study, the calculation of critical length, defined by the diffusion-based relaxation of the stress concentration region around second-phase particles, is reported using the Needleman–Rice parameter. An analysis of the impact of cavity formation based on a comparison of the Needleman–Rice parameter and second-phase particle size is also reported.INTRODUCTION Aluminum alloys with high specific strengths are utilized as structural materials for transportation machines to minimize their weight, which consequently maximizes fuel efficiency, environment preservation, and so on (Miller et al., 2000; Heinz et al., 2000; Starke & Staley, 1996; Polmear, 1996; Immarigeon et al., 1995; Burger, Gupta, Jeffrey, & Lloyd, 1995; Ye, 2003). Microstructure refinement by severe plastic deformation (SPD) has been performed on a laboratory scale to achieve a higher strength of crystalline materials (Valiev et al., 2006; Song, Ponge, Raabe, Speer, & Matlock, 2006; Beyerlein & Toth, 2009; Sabirov, Murashkin, & Valiev, 2013; Sauvage, Wilde, Divinski, Horita, & Valiev, 2012). At room temperature, grain refinement strengthens the material, as given by the Hall-Petch relationship (Hall, 1951; Petch, 1953); at higher temperatures, superplasticity can be expected (Sherby & Wadsworth, 1989; Edington, Melton, & Cutler, 1979; Furukawa, Horita, Nemoto, & Langdon, 2001; Langdon, 2006). However, the synthesis of large-size materials by SPD processes is not yet feasible."

VERY few thermodynamic data are available for rare-earth alloys, partly because of the difficulties of obtaining the metals in sufficiently pure form and also because of their comparative scarcity up to the present time. The rare earths form a very interesting series in the periodic table in view of the progressive filling of their 4f subvalence electron shell and would be expected to provide useful information with regard to alloying characteristics of transition elements. It has been found in recent calorimetric investigations that the heats of solution of a number of the rare-earth metals in liquid tin are highly exothermic.1-4 Exceptionally strong bonding between rare-earth and tin atoms is clearly indicated in the liquid solutions. Continued thermodynamic studies of the behavior of rare earths in solution could thus contribute a great deal to present theoretical knowledge of alloying behavior and would yield an insight into bonding of a strength hitherto unencountered in liquid alloys. The determination of the heats of solution of the pure components in liquid tin is an essential preliminary to calorimetric work of this nature. Heats of solution of praseodymium, neodymium, and samarium in liquid tin at 750" ' and the heats of mixing of Pr-Nd solid solutions' have already been determined in this laboratory. The present investigations with lanthanum continue the study of rare-earth elements. Details of the construction and operation of the liquid metal solution calorimeter used in this work have been published previously by Pool and Peluso and no further description will be given here. The lanthanum used in heat of solution determinations was supplied by Lunex who quoted the purity as 99.9 pct. Their detailed analysis of the material is given in Table I. Samples of 0.0003 to 0.0005 g-atom were used for each run and great care was taken to remove all surface oxide prior to weighing. The samples were stored at all other times in a beaker of oil to prevent their otherwise rapid oxidation. The compounds LaSn (Cudu, L1P type structure) and La&, (structure not classified) were prepared from the appropriate quantities of the two pure components by arc melting under a purified argon atmosphere and once again great precautions were taken to avoid any subsequent oxidation of the specimens. Although no structural examination of the compounds was made, the consistency of thermodynarnic measurements carried out on twenty or so individual samples of each indicates that the compounds were in fact homogeneous, single phase alloys. Samples of the compounds consisting of 0.0003 to 0.002 moles were used in the calorimetric measurements. A solvent bath consisting of approximately 80 g of 99.9 pct pure Sn was used for each series of runs and its heat capacity was determined at regular intervals throughout the experiments using pure tin or tungsten calibration samples. Measurements were made of the heat of solution of lanthanum in liquid tin at 725", 750C, and 775°K and at compositions up to 2.21, 4.76, and 5.25 at. pct La at the three temperatures respectively. In every case, the heat of solution of lanthanum remained constant at its limiting value, within experimental limits, up to the highest lanthanum concentration investigated. THE principle of fractional crystallization has been successfully used to prepare high-purity (99.999 pct) Ga. Hoffman and Scribnerl removed single crystals of gallium solidifying in a gallium melt, while Zimmerman2 grew single crystals from the melt by the Kyropolous technique. In contrast, attempts at purifying gallium by zone refining have been less successful. ichards, reported that despite the passage of 40 zones through a gallium ingot, there still remained 5 to 70 ppm each of Cu, Fe, Ca, Mg, Si, Al, and Ag. Previously, Detwiler and Fox4 detected only one impurity, Pb, segregating in zone-refined ingots. These surprising results prompted an investigation of the factors controlling impurity segregation in gallium. Possible reasons for this were insufficient diffusion of impurities in the melt; recontamination of the melt by its oxide film which is not affected by the passage of the zone; reaction of gallium with the boat; sudden freezing of gallium following supercooling, especially since gallium easily supercools to and trapping of impurities at grain boundaries. Impurity segregation tests were carried out by directionally freezing gallium using the Bridgman rnethd, modified in that the molten gallium is lowered out of a furnace into a slush of dry ice and trichloroethylene, thus minimizing supercooling. Since the gallium is contained vertically, the oxide film is in contact only with the tail end of the melt. It was found that Teflon makes an excellent crucible for gallium since it is quite pure, non-reactive, translucent, flexible, machinable, and is not wet by gallium. The gallium crystals could be grown at various speeds, and the melt could be vigorously stirred by a Teflon rod moving through the gallium in a vertical reciprocating fashion. Single crystals could be grown by placing a solid Teflon plug at the bottom of the melt drilled out in such a way to cause the solidifying gallium to follow a winding path. Thus, even if many crystals are originally nucleated, only one grain will predominate. The grain structure of the gallium crystals was revealed by an etchant composed of equal volumes of HC1, HNO3 and HF, diluted with water to half strength. Emission spectrographic analyses were carried out on samples removed from the front and tail ends of the resulting gallium ingots. Typical results of this study are summarized in Table I. The rate of freezing in all three cases was about 1 in. per hr. It can be seen that even though stirring of the melt does help, it is even more important to grow a single crystal of Ga in order to obtain good segregation of impurities. The effect of crys-tallinity on the segregation of impurities was previously observed6 in the directional freezing of germanium; however, in this case, the effect was much less pronounced. This dependence of impurity segregation on the crystalline perfection of Ga may be related to its thermal conductivity which is the most anisotropic of all metals.7 The anisotropic thermal conductivity can cause the solid-liquid interface to be nonuniform, thus leading to trapping of impurities during freeing, and therefore reduced segregation. In conclusion, it is indicated that zone refining of gallium would be more successful if seeding and similar precautions are taken to insure single crystal growth. The authors are indebted to Mr. H. THE mapping of slant-hole oil fields is complicated by the fact that relationships between wells are subject to variations in three dimensions and are not readily adaptable to representation on a plane surface. Formalized perspectives usually expand into an undecipherable maze of lines and peg models with the necessary supporting dividers serve only to awe the beholder with their perplexity. The usual compromise arrived at is a plotting of the projection of the courses of all of the wells in the field onto a horizontal plane (Fig. I). These complicated plots, when used in conjunction with the individual vertical projections of the wells, heretofore have been the most practical foundation for the study of general field problems. This method has many shortcomings, however, which are not found in the recently developed straight-hole equivalent projection method. The new method supplies a series of maps similar to the type now in common use in straight-hole fields. It is remarkably simple to use and supplies a ready check on clearances between wells. Perhaps the method can best be understood if the steps that led to its development are described. Common practice of oil-well surveyors is to supply the owner with a tabling of the survey and a plan view plotted against the true meridian. If a vertical projection is plotted, it is usually plotted separately and shows vertical depths against the projection of the stations along a section line joining the top and bottom of the hole on the plan view. A more practical method would be to plot the section line of the plan parallel to the abscissa of the vertical projection (Fig. 2). If this is done, any line parallel to the "base line" will pass through the points on each projection that represent a single point in the hole. Another very useful graph, which the well surveyor could provide, would be plotting of vertical depths against measured depths. Fig. 3 illustrates the next step facilitated by this form of plotting. The lines designated "well A" represent the proposed course of a hole to be drilled. Superimposed on the drawing, in its proper relative position, is the plan view and a portion of the vertical projection of a present producer, "well B." From an inspection of the plan view we arrive at the correct conclusion that the only indicated possibility of collision is at the point of crossing of the wells on the plan view. Referring to the vertical projection, note that the vertical depths of stations on B, in the vicinity of the crossing, are plotted on the same plane of projection as A. The clearance is the indicated distance between the two vertical sections measured along the parallel to the "base line," which passes through the point of intersection of the plan view. Repeat this process for the other wells crossing the proposed course of A on the plan view and you have a preliminary check of clearance for the proposed course. The mucus secreted in the respiratory tract provides the first barrier against inhaled particulate and gaseous toxicants. The major component of mucus which is responsible for the physical properties and protective functions of the respiratory mucus is mucin. We have initiated investigations to determine the effects of coal mine dust on the synthesis of respiratory mucin by rat trachea under in vitro and in vivo conditions. In this study we have established optimum conditions-:ro-r~ the asceptic growth and mucin secretion of rat tracheal explants in culture. The best outgrowth of ciliated epithelial cells and maximum mucin production was obtained in CMRL 1066 medium containing 10% fetal calf serum. The explants continued to secrete mucin even after three weeks in culture. For the estimation and characterization of mucins the tracheae were cultured in the presence of [3H] glucosamine and [35S] sulfate or [14C]leucine. The mucins were isolated from the medium by gel filtration, treatment with hyaluronidase, ion exchange chromatography and CsBr density gradient centrifugation. Precipitation of polyanionic material in the culture media with cetyl pyridinium chloride and fractional extraction with NaCl also yielded mucin free of glycosaminoglycans, but in low yields. The tritium label in the purified mucin was distributed in sialic acid (50%) galactosamine (37%) and glucosamaine (13%). The density of purified mucin as determined by CsBr gradient centrifugation was about l.43g per ml in comparison to l.46g per ml for human respiratory mucin with a carbohydrate content of about 80% by weight. Alkaline borohydride treatment released saccharides which contained about 80% of the radioactivity. The effect of adding varying amounts of coal dust to the culture medium is under investigation. The Cu-Au flotation cleaning circuit at Freeport Indonesia consists of three stages: two flotation column stages, in series, followed by one stage of mechanical cells. Concentrate from both column stages is combined as final concentrate. The mechanical cell stage has two parallel rows of seven Wemco 500's. The Wemco concentrate is recycled to feed of the second column stage and Wemco tails report to final tailings. This paper examines cleaner circuit performance, focusing on size-by-size performance of the individual stages and the individual mineral groups -copper sulfides, gold and in sol minerals. The recovery mechanisms of insol minerals are examined.

The concept of "a continuous succession of steady-states", which has been applied successfully by Aromfsky and Jenkins to obtain a solution for the nonlinear partial differential equation describing the transient Darcy flow of gas through porous media, is demonstrated to be equally valid for transient non-Darcy flow. A mathematical model, which numerically solves the partial differential equation, is used to check the validity of the succession of steady-states solution. Comparison of sand-face pressure histories compelted by the two methods shows excellent agreement. The utility of the succession of steady-states solution in predicting performance of gas wells rests in the fact that no special computation equipment is required. The development of the succession of steady-states solution leads also to a practical method for determining and analyzing field test data. A method for taking gas-well test data under constant-rate conditions is presented. Experimental data obtained in the field by employing the constant-rate method are presented and analyzed in accordance with the succession of steady-states solution. Analysis of data in this fashion is demonstrated to give direct "in situ" information for reservoir permeability, porosity and turbulence or non-Darcy coefficient. INTRODUCTION The economics of gas production are dependent upon the transient behavior of flow within the reservoir. For production from a finite reservoir, the transient flow behavior can be subdivided into two parts. At first, the transient caused by the movement of the pressure "wave" into the reservoir is of importance. Later in the production history, the pressure-wave movement ceases and the second transient stage of material depletion becomes controlling. For reservoirs of relatively high permeability, it can be shown that the pressure wave moves into the reservoir and stabilizes quite rapidly. In the case of relatively impermeable reservoirs, quite the opposite is true. Although it is theoretically possible to compute the production capability of a well from the properties of the reservoir as determined by static tests and core analyses, more reliable information is obtained by conducting flow tests on the well and thereby obtaining some measure of "in situ" formation properties. For gas wells, there are two basic types of tests in existence: the flow-after-flow method,' and the isochronal method.' Both of these techniques are tailored to obtain data that can be analyzed in accordance with the empirical performance equation: In addition, the isochronal method makes provision for the sluggish nature of pressure-wave movement in "tight" formations by requiring pressure build-up between flows and by stipulating that data obtained on successive flows be analyzed at equal elapsed flow times. It can be demonstrated that either test is valid for reservoirs of high permeability. Further, since it has been pointed out that the pressure wave stabilizes rapidly for reservoirs of this type, tests of relatively short duration will give stabilized information on the performance of a well. Further decline of sand-face pressure and/or production rate may be determined by employing material-balance techniques. Cullender' points out that for relatively impermeable reservoirs the flow-after-flow method gives invalid results. (See Appendix C.) If the isochronal method of testing is used, there are two alternatives: (1) the tests must be conducted for a sufficient length of time to obtain stabilized information (which may require months to accomplish); or (2) some method for extrapolating the results of short-term isochronal tests must be employed. The first alternative is impracticable because of manpower, conservation and economic considerations. Recourse to the second alternative requires some assurance regarding the reliability of the extrapolation technique. Poettmann and SchilsonJ present an empirical method for predicting stabilized performance. The present investigation was originally initiated to determine the reliability of this technique. To do this, a mathematical model was developed to simulate the Darcy and non-Darcy flow of gas through porous media. The model consisted of a finite-difference approximation of the nonlinear partial differential equation which was solved on an IBM 7090 computer. Long-term production histories were simulated by the model and compared against predictions obtained from the Poettmann-Schilson method. As the work progressed, it became apparent that a straightforward predictive equation could be developed by utilizing the concept of a succession of steady-states. As a result, the emphasis of the work was redirected to exploit the advantages of the new method.

"In recent years the gold mining industry has been challenged by declining metal prices as well as having to treat ores that have low grades and are refractory in nature. Many factors must be considered when metallurgical studies are designed to develop process design criteria for these type of ores. These factors are mostly related to the mineralogical and chemical compositions of the ores, the geological setting of the deposit and how the ore/waste will be mined, such as whether openpit or underground, the mine schedule, and the mine fleet type and capacity. The purpose of this paper is to provide an experience-based practical approach to how to select and characterize test samples as well as devise process development metallurgical studies for both oxide and refractory gold ores, and to provide insight into some of the matters that might go wrong during the course of the studies. This paper is intended as both a guide for someone new to the field and also as a reminder for those familiar with the field. IntroductionThe recent decline in ore grades and metal prices have challenged mining companies to reduce capital and operating costs associated with developing new mineral resources. In some cases, metallurgical studies have been sacrificed to prevent cost overruns resulting in inadequate mineralogical, chemical and metallurgical characterization. Consequences have included longer construction schedules, higher initial and working capital, higher operating costs and less than desirable plant performance (Whincup, 2010; Torres, Chaves and Meech, 1999).Mineralogy, geology, mining type and sequence, and the metallurgy of an orebody will determine the process development metallurgical study requirements and eventual process plant design. Therefore, once the geologist has an early indication of a prospective orebody, geologists, metallurgists, mining engineers, and social and environmental responsibility scientists should convene and devise a plan on how to exploit the orebody economically (Lunt, Ritchie and Fleay, 1997).Geologists may find a prospective orebody solely based on grade. However, if the orebody cannot be mined and processed economically, then it is deemed not to be a deposit. An example of this could be a refractory gold deposit, either sulfidic, carbonaceous or siliceous refractory or any combination of those, that may not be mined and processed economically due to reasons such as the physical location of the deposit, depth of the ore lode, or social and environmental concerns. Therefore, an early collaboration between all disciplines must be established.Each orebody may have its own unique mineralogical, geological and chemical characteristics (Guresin et al., 2012). These unique characteristics should be effectively sampled to reduce risks associated with process design and engineering efforts for the process development metallurgical studies. If the sample or samples are not representative of these unique characteristics, then the studies performed will be pointless. The project metallurgist in charge of conducting metallurgical studies should also possess general geology, mineralogy and mine engineering knowledge. Recommended readings are a book on understanding mineral deposits by Misra (2000) and articles on heap leach development by Scheffel (2014a and 2014b)."

"A Jet Diffuser Flotation Column (JDFC) is a newcomer flotation device whose operation principles similar with Jameson cell but it has an essential change in downcomer. By taking into account the hydrodynamic and fluid mechanic principles (Sahbaz et al. 2013) downcomer was changed as a diffuser, therefore turbulence at the end of the downcomer was reduced to provide better aggregate stability and homogenous dissipation of the bubbles in the separation tank. Thus the performance increase has been aimed for the coarse particles.According to theoretical results, obtained by the formula of Oteyaka (1993) showing the relationship between velocity gradient and maximum floatable size for the various contact angles, the d50 of quartz flotation of JFDC is about 240 µm and 310 µm for the contact angle of 50° and 60°, respectively. This result was verified by the experiments. According to the experimental results; d50 which was accepted the maximum floatable particle size of quartz flotation of JFDC was about 256 µm and 300 µm for the contact angle of 50° and 60°, respectively.INTRODUCTIONFlotation is a kinetic process used for separation of hydrophobic particles from hydrophilic particles. There are many different parameters affects the success of the flotation and particle size is one of them. While the flotation is very efficient for intermediate size, the efficiency of the process starts to decrease for both fine and coarse sizes (Trahar, 1981; Muganda et al., 2011). Therefore; researchers have tried to find a solution for the efficiency decrease in fine and coarse sizes by modifying the chemical condition and designing the new devices. For example, Jameson cell is a unique device for the fine particle flotation due to the suitable design and fine bubble producing (Jameson, 1988; Evans et al., 1995; Sahbaz, 2010). Because of this success operation the Jameson cell is applied more than 200 flotation plants in worldwide. On the contrary, the efficiency of the cell decreases for coarse particle flotation due to the turbulence occurred in the separation tank (Sahbaz, 2010; Cowburn et al., 2007). That’s why, new flotation device was designed in loboratory scale by Sahbaz, Oteyaka and Ucar in 2010s and it has been called as Jet Diffuser Flotation Column (JDFC) recently."

When manganese ores are leached with sulphur dioxide, a large part of any zinc in the ore usually is extracted with the manganese.1 In the dithionate process,2,3 in which the manganese ore is leached with dilute sulphur dioxide gas and the manganese is subsequently precipitated by adding lime to the pregnant solution, the zinc is precipitated with the manganese. These facts suggested the possibility of applying the dithionate process to the recovery of zinc from oxidized ores or calcined sulphide concentrates. Accordingly, an investigation was begun, and preliminary tests were made on several ores and concentrates. The results were encouraging, but the need to devote available funds and personnel to other projects made it necessary to drop the work before the various factors involved in the process could be studied in detail. A brief mention of the process,4 however, elicited a number of inquiries, so that it appeared desirable to report the results of the preliminary work. The dithionate process as applied to zinc may be summarized briefly as follows: The ore or calcined concentrate is leached with dilute SO2 gas to dissolve the zinc, largely as zinc sulphate, in accordance with the following equation in which [ZnO] represents the "oxide zinc" in the ore or calcine: [ZnO] + SO2(g) + 1/2 O2 = Zn++SO4— [1] If, in the leaching step, the ore or calcine is suspended in calcium dithionate solution, the sulphate ion, as it is formed, is precipitated immediately as calcium sulphate, which is subsequently filtered off with the insoluble ore residue: Zn++SO4— + Ca++S2O6— = CaSO4(s) + Zn++S2O6- [2] An alternative procedure is to suspend the ore in water, filter off the insoluble ore residue after leaching, add calcium dithionate to the resulting zinc sulphate solution, and then filter off the calcium sulphate precipitate. In either event the zinc is obtained in the form of a pregnant solution of zinc dithionate, from which it can be precipitated as relatively pure zinc hydroxide by adding milk of lime: Zn++S2O6— + Ca(OH), = Zn(OH)2(s) + Ca++S2O6- [3] The zinc hydroxide precipitate is calcined to form the final zinc oxide product: Zn(OH)2 = ZnO(s) + H2O(g) [4] Theoretically the process is completely cyclic with respect to dithionate ion, the calcium dithionate required for reaction 2 being replaced by that formed in reaction 3. In practice, of course, small amounts of dithionate would be lost in the various filter cakes, depending on the economic washing limits. In the leaching step, however, some of the SO2 is oxidized to dithionale instead of sulphate, accord- ing to the following overall reaction: ZnO + 2SO2(g) + 1/2 O2(g) = Zn++S2O6-, [5] so that the dithionate losses are made up, at least in part. Ores and Concentrates Tested The analyses of the ores and concentrates tested are summarized in Table 1, which also includes the analyses of the calcines produced from the concentrates. The concentrates were roasted in a laboratory muffle furnace at the temperatures indicated until evolution of SO2 could no longer be detected; shallow clay dishes ordinarily were used; but calcines 2a and 2c were prepared in iron dishes, with the result that these two calcines were badly contaminated with iron scale. The "complex" concentrate, sample 1, consisted essentially of sphalerite grains containing inclusions of pyrite and other sulphide minerals too minute to be liberated by grinding within economic limits. In the " marmatitic" concentrate, sample 2, the iron was present largely as marmatite (that is, as iron sulphide in solid solution in zinc sulphide) rather than as pyrite inclusions. The zinc was present largely as the carbonate in the two "oxidized" ores, samples 3 and 4, and as the silicate in the "willemite" ore, sample 5. Leaching Tests The leaching cell was a 3-liter glass beaker placed in an electrically heated water bath manually controlled to maintain a temperature of 35°C in the leach slurry. The mines and the mill of the Nevada-Massachusetts Co. are on the east slope of the Eugene Mountains, in Pershing County, Nevada, 8 miles northwest of Mill City, a station on the Southern Pacific R.R. and on the Victory Highway. Fig. 1. Supplies and, concentrate are transported by truck over an automobile road of easy grade. The property is at an average elevation of 5500 ft. and climatic conditions are generally favorable for continuous operation throughout the year. The ore treated is supplied by two adjoining mines, the Stank and the Humboldt. Physical and mineral characteristics of the ores produced by these two mines are substantially similar, although variations occur in hardness and mineral distribution.' The economic mineral is scheelite (CaWO4), composed, when pure, of 80.6 per cent tungstic trioxide (WO3) and 19.4 per cent lime (CaO).

Many members of the Institute, who participated in the visit made, during the Bethlehem meeting of February, 1906, to the shops of the Ingersoll-Rand Company, at Phillipsburg, N. J., inspected with interest the new Electric-Air drill, which the company had set up for the purpose of showing it in actual operation to American mining engineers. At the request of the Secretary of the Institute, I promised at that time to prepare a paper for our Transactions, describing the construction and advantages of the machine. But such a paper would then necessarily have contained much that was only expected or claimed by the designers and manufacturers of the drill, and not yet incontrovertibly proved by varied and long-continued practice. However moderate such statements might have been, they would have given inevitably to the paper, to some extent at least, the air of a prospectus, rather than of a technical contribution. I therefore decided, with the Secretary's approval, to postpone the writing of the promised paper until it could set forth the results of adequate actual practice, as well as the latest details of construction, etc., based upon practical experience. That period has now arrived. The Electric-Air drill has been exhaustively tested in the field, under varied and arduous conditions and upon the hardest rocks. It is now fairly in the field; its merits and performances are matters of unimpeachable record, and its place among established competitors can be definitely determined. As a representative of the Ingersoll-Rand Co., as well as a member of the Institute, I may be permitted to add that my company, being largely interested in the manufacture of air-coxpressors and machinery driven by compressed air, has no desire to injure its own business by claiming for this new machine that it should immediately supersede all existing applications of pneumatic transmission of power for drilling. Heat content values were experimentally determined for yttrium metal between temperatures of 400° and 1,300° K and for iron pentacarbonyl between 301° and 380° K. The drop technique was used; that is, a sample of material sealed in a protective capsule was heated to 3 desired temperature in a furnace and then dropped into an ice calorimeter. A revised technique for determining heat content values from calorimetric data is described. Heat content and corresponding entropy-increment data above a reference temperature of 298.15° K are presented in tabular form. Equations for heat content and heat capacity as functions of temperature were derived for each substance. "An estimated 600,000 tons of bentonite clay are used annually in the U. S. as binder for production of iron ore concentrate pellets. Since this is a significant cost item for the plants, and the addition of bentonite to the pellets contributes undesirable silica into the finished pellets, there is considerable incentive for finding methods to reduce bentonite use. One way to reduce bentonite levels is to selectively use those bentonites that are most effective in this application, so that a lower dosage will still produce a sufficiently strong pellet. Unfortunately, there are no satisfactory methods available for accurately predicting which bentonites are actually most effective, short of using them to actually make pellets. One of the popular methods for attempting to evaluate bentonites is the “Plate Water Absorption” (PWA) test. While some plant operators accept the PWA results as indicating the relative quality of bentonites, others disagree and claim that, over a fairly broad range of values, PWA does not correlate with bentonite performance.Since both Ca+2 and Mg+2 ions are known to reduce the swelling and water absorption capacity of bentonite, it was believed that the presence of these ions in plant recycle water could be changing the bentonite performance. Since the standard PWA test uses only distilled water for its measurements, it could not detect these effects. Experiments were therefore carried out on a number of different bentonites using a modified PWA tests, with plant recycle water replacing the distilled water. These experiments showed little effect of the plant water on the PWA value, and chemical analysis of the water showed that the levels of dissolved salts were quite low.Water and accompanying salts were then extracted from a magnetite concentrate filter cake by rinsing with distilled water. Analysis of this water showed an extremely high level of dissolved salts, particularly salts of calcium and magnesium. When concentrations were compared with the recycle water from the plant filters, it was determined that levels of Ca+2 and Mg+2 retained in the filter cake were over 500 times higher than levels in the recycle water. This extreme elevation of soluble salts in the filter cake is believed to be due to adsorption of these ions into the electrical double layer of the magnetite particles."

The Lime Creek* ore body in northwestern British Columbia is one of the few commercial primary stockwork-type molybdenite deposits in North America. Others include the Climax, Urad-Henderson, Questa, and Endako ore bodies. They are mined on a low grade-high tonnage basis, and are open pit operations except for Climax and Urad-Henderson. Much recent geochemical research on both porphyry copper and stockwork MoS2 deposits has been concerned with dating of micas related to the mineralization and associated igneous rocks. The results appear to show that mineralization and the predominant magmatic events of the deposit are indistinguishable in age (1-5), except where dating has been in sufficient detail to resolve the analytical overlap (6). At Lime Creek, geologic information shows that the Main granodiorite, the major intrusive and dominant host rock for MoS2 mineralization, was emplaced and had solidified sometime prior to the introduction of MoS2. The first MoS2 episode is intimately related to localized bodies of kalialaskite which clearly intrude the older stock. K-Ar dating was undertaken to clarify the age relations between Lime Creek plutonism and the apparently younger hydrothermal event that began with kalialaskite.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines performed experiments to determine the embedded hydrogen chloride (HCI) and smoke particle characteristics during combustion of polyvinyl chloride (PVC) and chlorinated mine materials for development of a test parameter. The experiments were conducted in an approximately 20-L furnace at set furnace temperatures of 250° and 1,000° C, for a 14-min duration, with an airflow through the furnace of 10 L/min. The variables studied, as a function of time, were hydrogen chloride embedded on smoke particles, hydrogen chloride concentrations in the gas phase, smoke particle average diameter (dg) and particle concentration (no), and product of smoke particle diameter and concentration (dgno). Other variables included carbon monoxide (CO), carbon dioxide (CO2), and oxygen (O2) concentrations; sample mass weight loss; and furnace temperatures. Results show that there is a correlation between embedded hydrogen chloride, hydrogen chloride gas concentrations, and inverse of the smoke particle diameter-concentration product (1/dgno); the higher the hydrogen chloride gas concentrations, the higher the embedded hydrogen chloride, the higher the 1/(dgno) values. These correlations will enable development of a simple test parameter to assess the toxic hazard that these materials pose during fire.
