Chemical conditions for flotation and nonflotation of cassiterite and fluorite with oleic acid as collector and with alizarin dyes as modifying agents were studied by means of small-scale, vacuum-flotation tests. Artificial cassiterite was prepared fot these tests by high-temperature methods, especially by crystallization from borax melts. FLOTATION test work on Bolivian tin ores some years ago led to the development of several workable schemes of selective soap flotation, but left unanswered many questions of soap-flotation chemistry.' Accordingly, the study of the activation and soap flotation of quartz just reported? was undertaken as a start toward the elucidation of some of the unanswered questions. The experimental work on quartz flotation consisted primarily of small-scale, vacuum-flotation tests in which activator and collector additions and pH were varied between wide limits. In the work to be described in this paper, the soap flotation of cassiterite and fluorite was studied by the vacuum-flotation technique developed in the previous study of quartz. Using oleic acid as collector, conditions for floating cassiterite and fluorite in the absence of modifying agents were first determined. Then the effects of barium, calcium, and alizarin dyes on the flotation of cassiterite, fluorite, and quartz were studied. Alizarin dyes were chosen for study because of the promise they have shown as selective modifying agents in the flotation of non-sulphide minerals.12,1 Also, they form a family of reagents in which there should be a systematic correlation of chemical properties with composition. As a preliminary to the study of cassiterite flotation, an investigation of the preparation of synthetic cassiterite and X ray studies of natural and synthetic cassiterite were undertaken. Experimental Methods The flotation technique and most of the reagent preparations were described fully in the previous paper.' In addition, for the present work it was necessary to prepare satisfactory stocks of clean cassiterite and fluorite and to obtain samples of alizarin dyes. The supply of clean copper ores, which have high copper concentration and low impurities like arsenic, has declined year by year. Therefore, both mine and smelter sides have to consider how to remove impurities like arsenic. We focus herein on arsenic as an impurity because it is an extremely important issue from the environmental point of view. Approximately 150,000 t of arsenic is input into the copper industry every year. A small part of it is mainly treated in the smelting side. For instance, Ministro Hales Limited, which is a mining corporation in Chile, has performed the calcination process to remove arsenic from ore with high-arsenic content. In the process, flue gas is washed by water, and the final residue is treated by a hydrometallurgical process. Many processes for arsenic removal in various stages have been proposed, and several bottlenecks exist to achieve it. One of the difficulties encountered is getting an assessment of the process, which depends on the countries and/or areas of operation. The standardization of the assessment procedure will be desired in the near future to keep the same environment standards all over the world, and now is the time to start making discussions on this matter. This will be the first step in making an international assessment procedure for arsenic treatment in the copper industry. INTRODUCTION Using the term “sustainable development” without any scientific basis can give people a false sense of security. Engineers and scientists must analyze the total mass flow of energy and materials and estimate local drain on the environment as well as the global impact of a particular industrial activity to ensure sustainability on this planet. The operations of the mining and smelting industries have a strong effect on the environment even if they provide useful materials for human beings. The copper mining and smelting industries have brought about serious environmental problems in the past. For example, the Ashio mine pollution caused big damage to the agricultural sector near the Ashio area in Japan in the late 19th century. One of the most serious problems at that time was SO2 emission because copper ore is sulfide, and the smelting process basically results to sulfur oxidation. The resource balance from a copper smelter in a year, assuming a total production of 16 million tons, can be summarized as follows: discarded minerals, 30 billion tons; sulfur, 16 million tons; iron oxide, 8 million tons; additional smaller amounts of other metals, electricity, and fuel.

A simple algorithm is presented for processing digitized X-ray spectra obtained with a Si(Li) or Ge(Li) semiconductor detector coupled to a multi- channel analyzer. The simplified least-squares procedure is used to smooth out the statistical fluctuations in the spectrum by repeatedly fitting a quad- ratic equation to a predetermined number of channels and performing a traveling smooth across the spectrum. A logarithmic transform is applied to the raw data to minimize the distortion of the gaussian-shaped peak profiles. The efficacy of the technique is evaluated by observing the distortion of several gaussian-shaped peaks that have been subjected to the smoothing operation. The locations of maximums and minimums in the spectrum are predicted in the process as well as the values of the peak heights. The convolution integers from a least-squares fit of a quadratic equation are calculated as part of a FORTRAN subroutine. The building-block approach to computer programing in a small laboratory is discussed.

A large number of techniques are in use today to limit membrane fouling, among them certainly is air bubbling (which constitutes the transport medium in flotation) as applied in wastewater treatment; meanwhile, dispersed-air flotation is suitable as a pretreatment stage for microfiltration. The invented and investigated hybrid cell combines the advantages of both flotation and membrane separation, while overcoming their limitations, producing clean water from industrial wastewater. Metals recovery from dilute aqueous solutions is a promising application of this innovative hybrid process of flotation and microfiltration, further to solid/liquid separation. In this study, ceramic flat-sheet membrane modules were inserted inside a typical flotation cell in the laboratory tests, using multichannel geometry, combining flotation with microfiltration by submerged membranes; the latter requiring periodic backflushing. The specific objective was to apply this process for the efficient separation of effluents containing metal cations (here, zinc). The main examined parameters were: the initial metal concentration, flotation surfactant applied and air flowrate. The successful contribution of precipitate flotation was highlighted, while the observed metal removals were of the order of ~100 per cent.

High-grade ore found in a shaft pillar at the Homestake Mine prompted a request for a Bureau of Mines study to determine if selected areas of the shaft pillar could be mined without jeopardizing the shaft. The design approach was to perform a finite-element study of the shaft pillar. Plan view and vertical sections were developed using two-dimensional, elastic, plane strain assumptions. Input into the model consisted of in situ stress measurements geologic mapping rock mass properties, and previous mining history. Results from the study indicated that ore-beating sections of the shaft pillar could be removed within the displacement tolerances acceptable for the shaft. Homestake engineers, using the results of the finite-element study and considering other factors, have designed and are beginning to mine the shaft pillar.

The mechanical properties of the rocks surrounding an orbital vibrator alter the shape and amplitude of the vibrator’s orbit. Detecting these changes with driving point impedance measurements promises to reveal fractures and, possibly, identify the in situ stress state and significantly increase the depth that can be investigated. Our research emphasis has been on detecting vertical fractures through casing. Experimental and numerical results to date indicate that our new logging tool has excellent potential for determining both the vertical extent and azimuthal orientation of such fractures. Fracture and in situ stress orientations are useful in mine planning.

The practice of transporting an ore or matrix from a pit area to the plant process area by means of a hydraulic pipeline has long been used by the mining industry. The industries which have classically used hydraulic transportation of ore to the plant include the phosphate mining industry, the heavy minerals mining industry, the clay mining industry, and the sand mining industry. As the advantages of this method become better known throughout the mining industry as a whole, and as techniques and expertise improve, its use will undoubtedly spread. Its use is presently being contemplated in iron mining diatomaceous earth mining, and several industries where massive removal of overburden is a predicate to economical mining. The widely recognized advantages of hydraulic transport at ion of ore from the pit area to the mines are: 1) Its relatively low initial capital costs. 2) Its speed of relocation at the mine site. 3) The washing and scrubbing action given to the ore by its hydraulic passage into the pit pump and the subsequent trip through booster pumps down the pipeline to the plant.

Locality and Geological Occurrence.—The Atpine region of Southwest. Colorado. cort~prieiog the San Juan and Uncon~paghre Mountains, is con~posed of a deeply eroded sheet of acid eruptive rocks, overlying in part gneissic schiets, and in part limestones and sandstones, including portions of the Silurian, Devonian, arid Carboniferous systems. The section is clearly and beautifully exposed along the Uncompghre River from its headwaters to its exit from the mountains. The river's course from the town of Ouray towards the Los Pinos agency is due north, and four miles from Ouray, in this directiou, the Uocampaglire receives from the east the Red Casm Creek. Following up the narrow canon we find the section through white. sandotone in strata dipping to the north and west, and belonging either to the lower or middle Devonian system. Presently the steep cafion-like character of the ravine gives place to more gentle slopes, ad we have entered crysralline rock—porphyry. This report describes preparation characteristics of significant coalbeds in Tazewell County , Va . In 1961 Tazewell County produced 933,110 tons of clean coal from six coalbeds ; the Lower Banner , Raven , Jawbone , Upper Seaboard , and Pocahontas No. 3 and No. 5. Samples from all of these beds , except the Lower Banner , were included in this study plus a sample from the Pocahontas No. 4 bed . Of the samples collected , only one would require upgrading to be of metallurgical quality . The coals ranged in rank from high- volatile -A to low- volatile bituminous .

The paper gives an outline of the design, installation and performance of a series of mooring and berthing dolphins for a major ferry berth outside the port of Elsinore, Denmark. The Dolphins are large cylindrical bottle shaped and open ended steel piles vibrated into the sandy seabed. They are subsequently equipped with prefabricated fender units. Vehicle access to the ferry is via a fixed ramp and a semi-submerged linkspan. Supplementary passenger access is via a covered gangway steel bridge from an existing gangway facility to a midship door in the ferry«

Kopar Oy is acknowledged for engineering and manufacturing of robust systems for bulk material handling, especially at power plants and non-ferrous smelters. We have over thirty years of experience with systems specifically designed for hot and abrasive conditions, aiming at low cost of ownership, low operational expenses and high availability. Although Kopar has numerous applications in mechanical conveying, there is an increasing number of pneumatic conveying applications at copper smelters. They relate to conveying of concentrate, and primary and secondary flue dusts. Challenges of pneumatic conveying for concentrate are mechanical and do relate to broad particle size distribution and high abrasivity of the concentrate and the silica. Therefore, special attention shall be paid to system design and ceramically lined bends in the pipeline. Challenges of pneumatic conveying of primary flue dust relate predominantly to material stickiness and poor flowability which are mainly due to fine particle size and formation of sulphates and furthermore, crystalline water. Additional challenges of secondary dust, the white converter dust, are primarily due to the extremely fine 0.1–1.5 µm particle size and problems which come with this. Effect of material characteristics like size distribution, morphology and chemical composition in pneumatic conveying are discussed in detail. INTRODUCTION Fine materials like concentrate, feed mix, flue dusts (from waste heat boiler and electrostatic precipitator) and secondary dusts need to be conveyed at smelters. Both horizontal and vertical conveying and combination of those are used. For the purpose, both mechanical and pneumatic conveying are applied. Most widely used equipment are drag chain conveyors and various combination of pneumatic systems, e.g. air lift, dense-phase and dilute phase pneumatic conveyors. Kopar has 30 years’ experience with multiple material handling systems. Furthermore, acquired companies like Elmomet Oy and SITE Oy (both currently fully merged and integrated into Kopar Oy) have even longer history, especially in pneumatic conveying. It is commonly known that the finer the dust the more difficult it is to be conveyed pneumatically. Sulfates with crystal water makes it all even more difficult, if not ineligible. Challenges related to pneumatic conveying of various fine materials is discussed in detail in the paper.

Synopsis This is a summary of investigations in the field of pressure leaching carried out at the Institute for Extractive Metallurgy of the Technical University of Berlin-West during the last seven years. The efficient dispersion of gas in a liquid and its dissolutions as well as the events at the phase boundary when leaching ZnS are reported. At the end two examples are given for the use of pressure leaching in the processing of smelter by-products. INTRODUCTION About 20 years ago, experiments were independently started in Canada and in Berlin on the subject of dissolving sulfidic ores without preliminary treatment by means of leaching under increased oxygen pressure. In Canada ammoniacal solutions were mainly employed, and F. A. Forward and his co-workers were successful in applying this process on a large industrial scale1, 2. This process is used in Fort Saskatchewan to produce about 15,000 tons of Ni per year. In Berlin, investigations were started on leaching with acid solutions3, 4. This process had also been used on a large industrial scale in the D.S.A., but the choice of unfavourable working conditions led to great difficulties, and to giving up this process for industrial use. Later on in Berlin work was carried out especially on the kinetics of pressure leaching 5, 6, 7, 8, 9 and its applications to the processing of smelter by-products, in particular of mattes and speisses10, 11, 12, 13, 14. The dissolution of ores and by-products can be subdivided into four steps: 1. the efficient dispersion of the gas, so that its dissolution occurs over as great a surface area as possible, since only the dissolved oxygen reacts with the solid, 2. the suspension of the solid, so that the entire surface can take part in the reaction, 3. the phase boundary reaction, 4. the removal of the reaction products. The first two steps belong to the field of process engineering and will be discussed from this point of view. The aim of these experiments15 was to find out first of all the limits of efficiency of self-sucking stirrers in solutions of low viscosity with regard to the mass transfer. In addition, the effect of ultrasonics in the same reaction system was studied. The experiments were carried out in a lucite container as shown in Fig. 1. Four baffles of 0.1 d width were in the stirring vessel. The height of these baffles was adjustable. For every experiment one litre of liquid was used. An infinitely variable direct current motor, which was fixed with a hollow shaft, served as the driving power for the stirrer.

The failure of a seal in an underground coal mine can have devastating consequences. Traditionally seals have been constructed as flat walls. Large hydraulic dams, on the other hand, are constructed as concave arches. This paper presents an initial analysis of the potential strengthening of seals by concave construction as well as the impact of additional cost in terms of labor and material. A simple finite element analysis of three-dimensional solids under uniform loading allows comparisons between the strength of a flat wall and a curved arch. The models are examined for reasonable behavior and displacements at 20, 50, 100, and 200 psi loads.

An experimental program in the U.S. Bureau of Mines' Safety Research Coal Mine evaluated the effects of dead end crosscuts on the transport time of CO along a mine entry. The presence of carbon monoxide is a characteristic of a fire in its incipient stage, and is significant in the determination of a fire location in a mine from the analysis of arrival times of pre-set concentrations at CO monitors. In this investigation two entries, with a total of ten crosscuts, connected by a room were instrumented with CO sensors as part of a real-time monitoring and data acquisition system. Controlled release of 1% CO was monitored as the contaminant traveled the entries for several different configurations of CO sensors and exhaust fan settings. In addition to the normal longitudinal dispersion of CO due to turbulent mixing at the front of the CO wave, the induced rotation of air established within a crosscut by the entry flow diluted the CO concentration through entrainment. It was determined experimentally for the entry and crosscut configuration considered that the transport time for a specified CO concentration was 27% greater than the predicted time based upon entry volume only, but 13% less than the predicted time based upon entry and total crosscut volume. The proper interpretation of the measured transport time of a specified contaminant concentration between sensors is important for mine safety in the isolation of a fire and plans for miner evacuation.

"In the development of a new product as well as during its introduction on the market, it is very important to give due consideration to problems involving patents, licenses and trade marks. At the very beginning of the research and development program, it is obviously essential to ascertain, through a suitable patent search, that the product in question will not infringe any patents which are still in force. Then, a possibility of achieving one's own patent or proprietary position on the product or the process of its manufacture should be carefully explored. Licensing arrangements that one may reach with respect to patents and know-how covering such new product may, in the final analysis, determine its over-all success or failure. If one can count on licensing revenues or some favourable cross-licensing arrangements with respect to a newly developed product, this may go a long way to achieving profitability and success. The selection of a good trade mark is probably one of the most important acts that one has to perform once the product is developed, as customers will identify the new product by such a trade mark. In many instances, successful marketing and widespread acceptance of a product are largely due to its appealing name or trade mark, accompanied by proper promotion and advertising. Once the trade mark has been adopted, it should be registered in the Trade Marks Office to provide the protection afforded by federal statute. If the product is to be manufactured, sold or licensed in some other countries, similar considerations should be made with regard to each such country."

The engineering of a support system is driven largely by economics. The goal is to provide effective support at minimal cost. For this reason, wood has been extensively used as a support material for centuries. The cost of timber for mining applications has risen by more than 50% in the past 5 years and is likely to continue to increase as the supply diminishes and further environmental restrictions are placed on timber harvesting. The increased cost and lack of high strength wood in the Western United States has provided incentives to improve the utilization of wood and to develop alternative support materials. This U.S. Bureau of Mines' (USBM) report discusses the basic engineering requirements for the application of various materials for supplemental roof support construction and provides an overview of support systems that use materials other than wood. A comparison of support performance and cost for various material constructions is made to assist the mine operator in support selection. The scope of materials discussed in the report include: (1) conventional mine timber loaded perpendicular to the grain, (2) parallel to the grain timber loading, (3) steel fiber reinforced and air entrained concrete, (4) steel, (5) granular fill materials, and (6) combinations of these as composite support structures. The range of support systems analyzed include wood and concrete cribs, concrete columns and props, steel beams, friction props, and several novel support concepts.

Appalachia is an increasing concern, as unnaturally high TDS and/or associated specific conductivity (SC) may contribute to deteriorated stream ecosystem health. The aim of this preliminary study was to explore the efficacy of accelerated leaching as a means of minimizing long-term TDS/SC generation by problematic overburden materials. Five spoil samples were collected and leached using simulated rainwater solutions under ambient and acidified pH conditions. SC and pH were monitored during each leach cycle, and inductively coupled plasma-mass spectroscopy (ICP-MS) was used to determine how leaching conditions affected the release of specific ions. This paper highlights the results of both jar and column leaching tests. Among the most significant findings was that for certain spoil materials, the SC in the leach column effluent was effectively reduced when the spoil was first leached with acidic rainwater followed by ambient rainwater, as opposed to leaching with ambient rainwater alone. This suggests that accelerated leaching might aid in the long-term stabilization of some materials.
