An ion exchange pilot plant, provided by Mesco Inc., was tested for antimony control in the electrolyte at three Chilean tankhouses for copper electrorefining: Chuquicamata, Potrerillos and Enami -Ventanas. The pilot plant, with a nominal extraction capacity of 1.2 kg Sb/day, worked connected to both experimental and commercial circuits, performing a total of 310 loading and elution cycles. An innovation in this process is the use of a chelating organic elution reagent, which presents some advantages over the traditional 6N HCI. This new eluent is amenable to continuous regeneration and recycling with high recovery efficiency. Antimony removal starting at initial, concentrations of 0.5 to 0.6 g/l of Sb down to steady concentrations of 0.1 to 0.0.6 g/l Sb, resulted in the production of High Grade copper cathodes with Sb contents below 0.1 ppm. Anodic slimes showed Sb contents below 1%.

LAST year the authors presented a paper that discussed the various electrical measurements they perform in drill holes, which they name "electrical coring."' The object of the present paper is to give a brief account of the points of scientific interest that have been elucidated by further field work and laboratory research, as well as the economic results that have been attained recently. The practical examples given in this paper are drawn, for the most part, from the field work performed in Russian oil fields during the years 1931 and 1932. This is due to the fact that, thanks to the comprehensive cooperation of the Russian geologists and scientists, the authors are allowed to make public a large amount of recent information. In other countries in which the authors are engaged in similar work, the competi-tion between private companies makes it imperative, for a considerable lapse of time, to avoid publication of the results obtained. The following points will be discussed successively, under sepa-rate headings: 1. Electrochemical phenomena in drill holes. 2. Stratigraphic correlations and tectonic studies. 3. Relations between the productivity of oil horizons and their electrical resistivity. 4. Location of coal seams. 5. Summary and conclusions.

An investigation of equivalent pore entry radii in typical samples of petroleum reservoir rock and the pore volume associated with each value of pore entry radius has been made. Theoretical discussions together with experimental procedures for obtaining pore entry radii and the distribution of pore volume with pore entry radii are presented. Experimental results on a number of core samples, along with typical distribution curves, are shown. Data on the per cent of the pore volume filled by mercury at a pressure of 1500 psi are included. The results of re-runs of samples, made possible by regenerative apparatus, show the repeatability of the data and indicate the amount of physical change in the samples by mercury penetration. Theoretical equations for calculating permeability from pore size distribution data were derived and the results of such calculations are compared with measured gas permeability data. The effect of the shape, surface area, and weight of the sample on the pore size distribution of reservoir rocks was investigated experimentally. Mercury capillary pressure curves are compared with those obtained by the porous diaphragm method using pas to displace water. Standard core analysis techniques, in general, lead to quantities which are statistical averages of the varying properties of the samples under examination. Although such statistical information has real value in predicting the gross performance of porous bodies. it fails to provide fundamental information concerning the properties of the porous medium itself or any processes which may be occurring in it. For example, a gas permeability measurement on a core sample is an indirect way of determining an average pore radius for that particular sample. Since there are many combinations of pore radii that will give the same radius. and, hence, the same permeability, no information is obtained on the pore size distribution. Furthermore, similar values in permeability do not imply similarity in other properties of a porous medium. For instance, it is possible to have two core samples with identical permeability which would have different residual oil contents at the end of an air-oil drive, or even different amounts of interstitial water. It has been recognized for some time by the petroleum industry that a determination of pore size distribution for porous reservoir rocks offered promise of increased understanding of fundamental flow processes in the porous matrix. and therefore of petroleum res- ervoir performance in general. There have recently been published several methods for determination of pore size distribution in porous materials. A report is given here of the modifications in equipment and technique required to adapt one of these methods to measurements on petroleum reservoir core samples. Although only a few correlations or applications of the method are available for presentation at this time, the technique is brought to the attention of the industry so that the opinions and experience of others with this or similar techniques may be exchanged. It seems possible that the method will have wide application in the future. METHOD There are three general methods which may be employed to measure the pore size distribution in naturally occurring rock formations. One method1 is based on experimentally determined adsorption isotherms for calculating the surface area of the porous medium. Knowing the surface area and the pore volume, a rough estimate of the pore radius can be made. Since this method depends on the thickness and uniformity of the adsorbed layer, the validity of the results would be highly questionable. "A review of the current status of gasification technology shows that many engineering systems are immediately available for use in the gasification of coal. Widespread international experience can be brought to bear on the atmospheric pressure gasification of all Canadian coals.Unless a high ash content dictates the use of a fluid-bed gasifier, it appears that bituminous coals can be used in gravitating (fixed] bed systems and that the strongly caking coals are most suited to the high-pressure entrained-bed systems . Existing and developing technologies in fluid-bed gasification are attractive for reactive lignites and subbituminous coals.The Fischer-Tropsch based process is the only commercial embodiment of coal liquefaction; the use of Canadian coals in this process depends only on their gasification characteristics. Current developments in hydroliquefaction are directed toward carboniferous coals of medium or high rank. It is not clear that cretaceous coals of the same rank will give similar process yields and economics.IntroductionThe twin coal conversion processes of gasification and liquefaction have a history which dates back beyond the current energy shortages of the western world. Environmental properties of the northeast Equatorial Pacific along 131.5 degrees west, between 5 degrees and 13 degrees north latitude, were investigated in association with changes in water column structures during the summer seasons of 1998 and 1999. Climatic disturbances such as El Nino and La Nina, should have affected this area during the study period. In 1998, a thermocline where temperatures rapidly decrease with depth, was formed at 90~110 m water depth. However, in 1999, a very fluctuating thermocline was observed with latitudes. As a result of changes in the water column structures, biological and chemical environment also showed fluctuation parallel to the changes in other physical parameters. Inorganic nutrient depleting areas, especially for nitrate+nitrite and phosphate, or oligotrophic regions were extended down to approximately 100 m depth, which coincided with the surface mixed layer depth. In the euphotic zone, depth integrated nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) values were 34 g-N/m2 (grams of Nitrogen per square meter of sea floor), 7 g-P/m2 in 1998 and 130 g-N/m2, 18 g-P/m2 in 1999, respectively. The results indicated that nitrogen (96 g-N/m2) and phosphorus (11 g-P/m2) are supported by up-welling and down-welling phenomena with convergence and divergence in the study area. Biological parameters in the water columns were largely determined by the physico-chemical environmental parameters. Subsurface chlorophyll maximum layers were coincided with the formation of seasonal thermocline. Copepods were the dominant group of zooplankton community at three sampling stations (N5, N6, N10) terms of abundance, which was the same results of previous surveys for the past 3 years. Among copepod populations, Oncaea sp., Oithona sp. Clausocalanus sp., Acarocalanus sp. and juvenile copepodites were dominant Appendicularians, foraminiferans and radiolarians were also dominant. To investigate diel vertical migration pattern of zooplankton, repeated samplings from the water depth of 0~50m and 50~200m were conducted at KODOS (Korea Deep Ocean Study) area before and after sunrise. Zooplankton abundance was slightly higher after sunrise than before sunrise in the surface layer. Chlorophyll-a concentrations were relatively low as the concentration of sediment increased in most experiments possibly due to a decrease of grazing pressure of microzooplantkon such as ciliates, which is the efficient grazer on small-sized phytoplankton. Because copepod predation on microzooplankton may be prevented by the high concentration of sediment, resulting in lower grazing pressure on small-sized phytoplankton. The results obtained during the baseline study as a part of KODOS project since 1998.

Chalcopyrite leaching in acidic ferric sulfate media at ambient temperature exhibits slow kinetics and poor leaching efficiency, which is typically attributed to surface passivation. Recently, the presence of small amounts of iodide in the leaching media has been reported to significantly accelerate chalcopyrite dissolution. To further explore the behavior of chalcopyrite leaching in the presence of iodide, it is essential to determine the factors that control the leaching kinetics. In this study, we investigated the effect of initial solution potential, iodide concentration, particle size, and temperature on the kinetics of copper extraction from chalcopyrite. The key in the experimental setup was to minimize iodide loss by iodine evaporation and precipitation as cuprous iodide. The former was achieved by performing the leaching tests in fully sealed leaching systems. The latter was achieved by maintaining the solution potential higher than 420 mV (versus Ag/AgCl electrode), where formation of CuI precipitate is possible. The experimental results show that higher solution potential and higher iodide concentration had a pronounced positive effect on the rate of chalcopyrite dissolution. There was no effect associated with particle size, which might be due to the narrow size range tested. The positive effect of increasing temperature only manifested itself when the solution potential was sufficiently high. INTRODUCTION The main challenge of chalcopyrite leaching using ferric ions as the oxidant at ambient temperature is the slow kinetics and poor extraction. The reason for this leaching behavior has been attributed to passivation resulting from formation of insoluble passivating layers on chalcopyrite surfaces, which could be metal-deficient sulfides, elemental sulfur, polysulfides, and iron precipitates (Klauber, 2008). To overcome passivation, technologies using higher temperature and pressure have been developed to leach chalcopyrite concentrates, such as the CESL process (Mayhew, McCoy, Mean, & Woeller, 2013), FLSmidth Rapid Oxidative Leach (ROL) process (Mulligan et al., 2017), Galvanox (Dixon, Mayne, & Baxter, 2008), Albion process (Hourn, Turner, & Hourn, 2012), HydroCopper (Hyvärinen & Hämäläinen, 2005), TPOX (Dreisinger, 2006), and AAC/UBC process (Dreisinger, Dempsey, Steyl, Sole, & Gnoinski, 2003). Even though they are effective in accelerating copper leaching kinetics, those technologies typically have higher capital and operating costs associated with production of concentrates and application of autoclaves. This makes them unsuitable for treating low grade primary copper sulfide ores.

In accordance with the 57th section of the Explosives Act, 1875, the following report on the working of the Act during the year ending December 31, 1903, is submitted. There have been no modifications of the law during the year. No complaint is made of any falling off in the general condition of factories and magazines, and in one instance only during the year have legal proceedings been taken for any irregularity. The occupiers of factories and magazines have invariably shown perfect readiness to remedy any defects, and the managers have themselves in many instances introduced improvements tending towards greater safety. The number of deaths (5) from accidents by fire or explosion in the manufacture of explosives is below the average for the decade (6•4). Looking to the large number of persons employed in this trade, the number of deaths is not excessive and will compare favorably with the death-rate in other dangerous trades. Notwithstanding the large increase in the manufacture of explosives, the average number of deaths has greatly decreased since the passing of the Explosives Act, whereas the number of fatal accidents with explosives under conditions to which the Act does not apply appears to increase with the extension of trade.

This report describes the engineering feasibility and economic advantages of using a steep angle conveyance (SAC) system in conjunction with medium and large draglines to transport spoil in a typical Western Coal Mine. The SAC system, including a receiving hopper, a steep angle conveyor and a sticker/spreader, is capable of processing overburden material at the rate of 7,000 tons/hr. The unique feature of this system is the steep angle conveyor which transports the overburden material from the pit bottom to the top of the spoil at angles to 45 degrees. Compared to other means of cross-pit conveyance considered during this study, the SAC system offers the advantage of easier operation, lower conveyance cost and greater mobility. The results of this study have shown that integration of the SAC system into both established and planned new mines would improve the overall mining operation, expand the operating capability of existing equipment and reduce mining end reclamation cost.

This study investigates the use of a horizontally- baffled column (7.6 cm inside diameter by 344.2 cm high) to reduce the ash content of a high ash bituminous coal. Tests were carried out to determine how the baffled column responded to changes in feedrate, reagent dosage, and feed quality, and to compare its performance with a conventional column installation in an operating plant. In this paper, the results of this investigation will be reviewed and discussed.

During a programme to determine the suitability of the UK site for deep disposal of radioactive wastes, geostatistical methods were used to characterise rock heterogeneity on the basis of seismic and wireline acoustic-impedance data. The data were analysed to yield semi-variogram models that quantified the three-dimensional spatial heterogeneity of acoustic impedance. These models were reconciled with geological interpretations of the area and used to generate simulations of acoustic impedance, with wireline acoustic impedance as conditioning data. The three-dimensional simulated images were compared with actual seismic acoustic impedance. The variography confirmed a vertical zoning effect in the Borrowdale Volcanics, showing that it is caused by preferential clusters of high acoustic impedance values corresponding to regions of relatively low porosity. The data on heat stroke cases reported during the past five years were examined to determine the influence of age on the incidence of heat stroke. Relating the age distribution of these cases to that of the total number of Bantu mine workers showed clearly that the older men run a significantly higher risk of developing heat stroke than the younger men. Although the number of Bantu over 40 years of age in the industry is less than 10 per cent of the total they nevertheless accounted for 50 per cent of the fatal heat stroke and 25 per cent of the nonfatal heat stroke cases during the period under review. Age must, therefore, be recognised as a causal factor in heat stroke and the worker over 40 years of age should be allocated to work on surface, or in cool areas or to non-strenuous and supervisory tasks in hot areas.

Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) regulations require underground coal mine operators to dust their mine corridors with an inert material to prevent coal dust explosions. The most commonly used material is pulverized limestone. Current practice to determine compliance with MSHA regulations requires the coal mine foreman or an MSHA inspector to collect samples of the deposited dust, a mixture of coal dust and limestone rock dust, for above ground laboratory analysis. To expedite this process, the U.S. Bureau of Mines has developed two instruments to facilitate the inspection and rock dusting processes, the explosibility meter and float dust deposition meter. The explosibility meter is a hand-held instrument which provides an in situ measurement of the explosible nature of homogeneous mine dust samples. The float dust deposition meter measures the mass loading density of the top layer of coal or limestone dust deposited on the mine floor during mining operations by the ventilation air. It may also be used to automate trickle rock dusting equipment. The operation of each device is based on the difference in the optical reflectance between the light limestone dust and the dark coal dust. The principal of the explosibility meter is based on the observation that, for a fixed coal volatility, the optical reflectance of dust mixtures is relatively constant at the limit of flammability, and independent of the coal dust particle size.

A THOROUGHLY modern coal-handling system has been installed at the Pittsburgh Terminal R. R. & Coal Co.'s new No. 8 shaft, or Coverdale mine, about 11 mi. (17.7 km.) from Pittsburgh on a spur f the Montour R. R. The Pittsburgh seam, which is the one worked, is reached at a depth of 342 ft. (104 m.). Power is delivered to the mine at 22,000 volts over a transmission line of the bow-arrow type of construction. A private telephone line connecting the various mines and the main office in Pittsburgh is carried on the same poles. The high-tension line is brought to an outdoor, step-down, transformer substation, where three 833-kv.-a., single-phase, 60-cycle, oil-insulated, self-cooled transformers reduce the potential to 2300 volts. The transformers are protected by electrolytic, aluminum-cell lightning arresters, horn gaps, and choke coils. High and low-tension busses, together with fuses, choke coils and air-break horn-gap switches with their remote-control operating mechanism are mounted on a substantial structural-steel tower 25 ft. (7.6 m.) in height. MINE SUBSTATION The transformer substation is adjacent to a pressed-brick building that houses direct-current substation equipment together with switchboards, etc., for the control and distribution of power. This building also contains the hoist for the men and supplies.

This paper covers some of the problems presented to the oil industry in the drilling of oil wells in the open waters of the Gulf of Mexico. The hazards, delays and relative costs of offshore drilling are reviewed and various forms of drilling platforms discussed. The requirements of the offshore drilling rig are summarized together with the principal items affecting the cost of construction. Sea waves and their size and characteristics as affecting offshore platforms are reviewed. Drilling platforms are classified as fixed, or fixed and floating. Fixed platforms of the conventional cofferdam and pile-supported type are discussed together with their good points and their limitations. The desirability is pointed out of eliminating as much offshore work as possible where operations are subjected to constant and expensive delay and substituting therefor the prefabrication of structures ashore or in sheltered waters. Marked economy will come with the standardization of offshore rigs aid special means of transporting them to the site. Several types of structure which are partly pile-supported and partly buoyancy-supported are discussed and their possibilities of future usefulness commented upon. General Considerations The predominant attribute of offshore drilling equipment is that it must be equal to the job in hand. We therefore give first thought to the matter of adequacy. In view of the probable depth of drilling, the investment involved and the per diem labor costs, it is assumed heavy modern drilling equipment will be employed. In order to usc such equipment efficiently, the working deck must be ample in size and strength and supported so as to be relatively free from motion and from green seas even in heavy storms. These requirements necessitate a high and rigid land-based support for the drilling rig and machinery with plenty of space for supplies, such as pipe, mud, water and fuel, with reserves for days when transportation from shore is impracticable. In offshore rigs the crew will be housed onboard in comfortable quarters, probably air conditioned and equipped with a galley and refrigerated food storage. An important consideration will be the ability to transfer stores and crew to and from the rig in all but the heaviest weather and the platforms must be protected from the impact of supply vessels when alongside. It will be essential to maintain continuous communication with shore by radio or cable, not forgetting the possibility of a helicopter landing space for the transfer of crew and light stores as well as a means of general communication. Whatever structure is constructed must be secure from storms of hurricane force and a safe place for the operating crew to work. If the well comes in, the drilling rig will presumably be removed and a small but rugged pile-supported platform will remain to carry the Christmas tree with safe working space around it. It will be protected from damage on all sides by buffer piles or dolphins. It is assumed that the flowing oil will be piped to storage tanks in the vicinity of the well. Research efforts which have led to reduced resin bolting costs at White Pine Mine are described. Key factor was development of the capability to drill small holes (1 1/8 in. diam) in the hard (20,000-30,000 psi) White Pine roof rock. Economic data comparing the 1 1/8 in fully-grouted Resin Bolt to the conventional 1 3/8 in fully-grouted bolt is also included. The development of a method which allows the Resin Bolt to hold itself in the hole thus removing the requirement for the operator to break his "work momentum" while he stops and waits for the resin to set is also described. This technique increased bolter productivity by 23% in a recent full-scale unit test.

Corrosion resistance of the lead-based anodes directly influences the purity of the final product in the zinc electrowinning process. The anodic MnO2 layer that is electrodeposited on the anodes during this process can protect the anodes against corrosion. Sand-blasted anodes generate a uniform, adherent and shiny MnO2 layer, which gradually blisters and eventually sloughs off after several weeks. In this study, we attempted to develop a new method to stabilize the MnO2 protective layer on the anodes during the electrowinning process by providing suitable nucleation sites for electrodeposition of this layer. MnO2 particles (P80=40µm) were used as seed material for this purpose. Different techniques of galvanostatic and cyclic voltammetry polarizations, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and atomic absorption spectroscopy (AAS) were employed to investigate the performances of the MnO2-seeded lead anodes. The experimental results showed that growth of the MnO2 layer is influenced by the MnO2 seed particles on the anode surface. The MnO2 layers electrodeposited on the MnO2-seeded lead anodes were uniform and strongly adherent to the substrate. This layer was more stable than those formed on the PbAg anode without MnO2 seeding. This could provide the anode with a higher level of corrosion protection. Moreover, formation of undesirable MnO2 mud in the electrolyte and the rate of manganese consumption were decreased when the MnO2-seeded lead anodes were polarized. These observations could be attributed to the different properties of the electrodeposited MnO2 layer on this anode in comparison with that formed on the PbAg anode.

This report describes the results of a system study of the factors influencing mine rescue attempts based on the use of electromagnetic VF rescue transmitters by trapped miners and helicopterborne search receivers by mine rescue personnel. The findings cover four main task areas. The first - mine emergency/disaster considerations - concentrates on characterizing the events and key parameters of mine fires and explosions related to trapped miner location and rescue activities. The parameters include critical time periods, affected areas, survival times, response and rescue times, and survival rates. The second - hardware considerations - concentrates on characterizing the relevant properties of VF rescue transmitters, oxygen-type self-rescuers, VF search receivers, helicopter performance, and signal detectability and sensor sweepwidths for helicopterborne sensors. The third - search theory probabilistic model develops a method to identify the most important regions to be searched, and to allocate helicopter-based search effort so as to maximize the number of miners detected in time to be rescued. The fourth - sensitivity analyses and application of the search model - exercises the search model on representative mine emergency/disaster scenarios to assess the impact and effectiveness of helicopter-based searches. Conclusions and recommendations are presented, together with a set of search scenario planning guidelines.

Recent epithermal gold discoveries in Chile and Bolivia provide increasing evidence of a belt of intermittent, epithermal, precious metal mineralization east of the main Andean porphyry copper belt. This relationship may be the result of an easterly decrease in the age of magmatism and erosional levels, in¬crease in depth above the underlying Benioff zone and consequent changes in magma chemistry, or some other unrecognized factor. Examples are: • The Choquelimpie gold-silver mine in Chile and numerous other epithermal prospects (such as La Riviera, Bolivia) in late Tertiary volcanics along the Chile-Bolivia border. These lie east of the belt that contains the Toquepala, Quellaveco and Cuajone porphyries in southern Peru and the Cerro Colorado, Copaquire and Quebrada Blanca porphyries in northern rhila
