"BAUER Foundation Corp. was one of three contractors awarded with the installation of a cut-off wall at the Herbert Hoover Dike Rehabilitation project. The cut-off wall was constructed up to 84 feet deep and 25 inches thick. It extended from the crest through the middle of the existing dike into the underlying peat, sand, and rock layers. BAUER used the cement deep soil mixing method of Cutter Soil Mixing (CSM) to install the wall. Soil mixing was facilitated by first removing the peat layer in the wall alignment using Kelly drilling and replacing it with suitable backfill, resulting in a secant pile wall arrangement of replacement columns. BAUER successfully finished four task orders with a total length of just over 10 miles. Up to six rigs of the types BAUER BG 28, BAUER BG 40 and RTG RG 25 were concurrently used to perform the replacement columns and the cut-off wall installation.The paper introduces the project, the geotechnical site conditions, and the requirements specified by USACE. It focuses on the specific adaptation of the CSM method to the site conditions and on the equipment used. Strength and permeability results obtained from an extensive testing program are presented. The impact of the curing conditions on lab and in-situ test results is studied, and test results are related to soil conditions.PROJECTThe Herbert Hoover Dike is a 143-mile-long dike encircling Lake Okeechobee in south central Florida. When it was constructed in the 1930s and 1960s, the purpose of Herbert Hoover Dike was flood protection from hurricanes. However, during the 1970s a higher lake level was maintained permanently to provide local agriculture with water. Later, damage became apparent during two nearly back-to-back high water events in the 1990s, when numerous sink holes, seeps, pipes, and boils were observed (Fig. 1). In 2000, the Congress approved USACE to propose rehabilitation measures. The installation of a cut-off wall into the existing dike was chosen during the initial design process as the preferred measure to improve the safety of the dike (Davis et al. 2009).The first section of the dike to be rehabilitated was Reach 1 located along the southeast side of the lake between the towns of Port Mayaca and Belle Glade. An indefinite delivery indefinite quantity (IDIQ) multiple award task order contract (MATOC) was issued for this 22.4-mile-long stretch by USACE in 2007. BAUER Foundation Corp. (BAUER) was one of the three contractors that succeeded in the qualification process. Each of the three successful contractors had their own novel construction techniques. In the years 2008 to 2012 BAUER executed four task orders totaling over 10.0 lineal miles of cut-off wall with 3.3 million square feet of design surface area."

Enargite in porphyry copper deposits is an important mineral as it displays good floatability under the presence of the collectors usually used in the flotation of copper sulfides. As a result, copper concentrates grades are reduced. As scarcity of water resources is a problem relevant to Chilean mining, the use of seawater is a feasible solution. The behaviour of copper sulfides and molybdenite in the process of flotation in seawater was previously studied but not for enargite. The objective of this research is to study the behaviour of the enargite in different conditions of electrochemical potential during the process of flotation using seawater. The study was carried through micro-flotation tests using pure samples of enargite, at Eh values ranging from -300 to 500 mV(SHE), both in seawater and aqueous solutions containing calcium and magnesium. The results show that at pH 10.5 in seawater, the enargite and chalcopyrite recoveries are reduced throughout the whole range of Eh studied. At pH 9 in seawater, enargite and chalcopyrite are depressed under reducing and slightly oxidising conditions. The recovery of both minerals drastically decreases at Eh values lower than -100 mV and greater than 400 mV. The behaviour of enargite in seawater flotation differs from that observed in conventional water, since in the latter case the recovery of enargite decreases at higher potentials close to 500 mV. LITTLE study has been made of the pressure changes and energy losses that take place when an air current is divided into splits which subse-quently unite. The discussion and the experiments that are described in this paper deal with the division of an air current into square splits of equal size, the area of each of the splits at the downstream junction being one-half the area of the main duct. APPARATUS AND SYMBOLS The duct system shown in Fig. 1 was built of Y4-in. redwood and made as smooth as possible.The section of the top over the splits and the zone of mixing was of plate glass to permit observation of the stream lines. FIG. 1-DUCT SYSTEM. Static pressures were measured by means of pinhole tubes and a precise inclined manometer. Measurements of rates of flow were .made by determining the drop in pressure through concentric square orifices in the splits. The air was supplied by a fan operated by a direct-current motor that received its current from a motor generator set. Delicate rheostats in the armature. of the motor. made possible the perfect control of the fan speed, which was indicated on an electrical tachometer. Vanes to straighten the. flow were placed at the head of the main duct.

This paper describes the steps taken in planning, developing, and executing a case study/ case history course in geotechnical/ foundation engineering at an international university. The paper sheds light on: how a “workable” format for the course was arrived at; the organization of the course; and the results of evaluating the effectiveness of this approach versus traditional lecturing. Problems and challenges that could arise when offering the course for the first time are also addressed. Embedded in this experience and its related protocols are: the emphases on engineering design and the practice, teamwork and leadership development, organizational management, and oral and written communication skills. The paper concludes by confirming that discussions, through an open forum, are judged to be superior to traditional lectures in improving critical thinking, cultivating desirable personal attributes, and acquiring problem-solving skills.

We used Glyoxal as the hardener, at a final concentration of 10% by volume and therefore 20% by volume in the A-Component. They worked pretty well what we did was we shaved the joints on each of the pipes when we assembled them so they wouldn't rip the packers and then we greased the packers very well going in. We had to replace some but we have any getting stuck or didn't lose any pipes.

A large body of readily available Na-montmorillonite is present about 24km (15 miles) east of Fallon, Nevada. The clay is comparable to Wyoming Na-bentonite, but with somewhat less MgO and somewhat more Fe2O3 in its crystal structure. The physical and industrial properties of the Nevada clay are comparable to those of the Wyoming clay. The Na-montmorillonite is presently mined for use as hazardous waste barrier material and as a sealant for canals. It may be economically feasible to process the clay material for removal of impurities.

Over a four-hour period of steady plant operation samples were taken at regular intervals frum points within the grinding and flotation circuits. Size fractions of each composite sample were analysed for lead and zinc values and a comparison made of the behaviour of the lead, zinc and gangue minerals, size by size throughout the whole circuit. Analysis of the breakage behaviour using dynamic mathematical models gave the rates of breakage of each size fraction of each main component. Simulated grinding experiments shaved that the main grinding circuit had some reserve capacity. In the lead flotation circuit all lead values between 150 mesh (Tyler) and 5 ¦m had excellent flotation characteristics, and a major proportion had a high rate of flotation which was practically the same for all sizes. Increase in overall lead recovery would require improvement of the flotation behaviour of ultra-fine lead minerals. These were slav floating and were responsible for approximately half the lead losses in the final zinc concentrate and one thiro of the lead losses in the final tails. All sizes of zinc values between 150 mesh and 7 ¦m floated well and the performance of the zinc flotation circuit was mainly limited by the relatively poor flotation of the very fine zinc values. Approximately 60 per cent of the zinc lost to the final tails lay within the -7 ¦m fraction. The overall flotation conditions were conducive to very good selective flotation of the major proportion of the values and limitations in metallurgical performance were mainly due to the properties of the ultra-fines.

The results of a two-year research effort aimed at improving communication systems in coal mines is reported. A review of communication methods presently used in coal mines is presented. Theoretical and-experimental results of a four pronged effort in the areas of (1) through-the-earth propagation, (2) paging system design, (3) improvement of wired telephone systems, and (4) carrier current systems are described. Auxiliary systems not included in the above are considered briefly. Various conclusions are drawn in light of practical constraints and the needs of the mining industry. The study clearly demonstrated the need for nine communications to be designed on system basis. The viability of new technology for providing reliable mine communication for improving mine safety and operating efficiency is shown.

India is devoid of coking coal resources, which is a vital raw material for coke making. As a result it has to import about 80% coking coal for steel making. Indian National Steel Policy, 2017 has envisaged crude steel production around 300 million tonnes Mt) by the year 2030-31 and forecasts coking coal demand of 161 Mtpa (million tonnes per annum). One way of improving the indigenous resources is to study the performance of existing washeries and to improve the clean coal recovery by adopting suitable technology. A study was carried out, mainly to focus on the fine coal circuit of an existing coking coal washery, to generate the desired quality of clean coal. The operating coking coal washery being studied is presently feeding coal from nine different sources with varying feed ash contents. The coal fines varied in ash content ranging from 19.5% - 43.6%. For treating the coal fines, the washery has operated a spiral for the past few years. Performance studies were carried out, and it was found that the spiral is not efficient in recovering the cleans. Detailed investigations were carried out on the coal fines using flotation techniques, and it was found that to achieve a low ash clean coal, the froth flotation is a much better beneficiation option than a spiral, The studies showed that the recovery of clean coal through a spiral is 67.7% at ash content of 27.0%, while flotation tests showed a recovery of 68.1% at 16.5% ash content. "Two novel electrochemical techniques for the preparation of highly crystallized CdS film have been presented. One is cathodization of a conductive substrate in an acidic chemical bath containing cadmium salt and thioacetamide, where electroreduction of proton at small current densities induces a growth of highly crystallized CdS thin films, whose growth is not disturbed by the reactions in the solution phase. The other technique is electoreduction of aqueous Cd2+— SCN complex. An advantage of this technique lies in no formation of solid particles in the bulk, of the bath.IntroductionIn recent years much attention has been paid to materials preparation by solution processing because of its advantages in lowering the cost as well as the stress to the environment, as compared to the conventional gas phase techniques which unavoidably require high temperature and/or vacuum. We have been trying to explore novel techniques for preparing functionalized compound semiconductors by aqueous solution process. Semiconductors which we have been mainly focusing on are CdS and ZnO, which are important semiconductors finding applications in various devices. In the present paper, some of the techniques that we have recently established for the preparation of highly crystallized CdS will be presented.Methods of the CdS film processing in solution phase (wet process), which have been reported so far can be divided into two major groups; one is chemical bath deposition (CBD) in alkaline solution containing Cd2+ and thiourea 1)4) and the other is electrodeposition (ED) in acidic solution containing Cd2+ and thiosulfate ions - 5)-8) or organic solutions containing dissolved sulfur 9)-11)."

The human lumbar spine is inherently an unstable structure and requires sophisticated neuromuscular control to maintain its stability and for performing physical tasks. As a consequence, it is important to understand the potential health effects on human operators of mechanical stimuli such as shock and vibration.1 Impact applied to a vehicle operator combines the risk of sudden, unexpected load with the mechanical stress of the seated posture.2 Because many work environments contain the potential for multiple, unexpected impacts, it is important to understand how the trunk muscles respond to complex conditions. We believe the results have implications for isolation design and standards development. Methods Muscle activity was recorded during simple and complex impacts, applied randomly and without warning, while subjects sat on an air-suspension truck seat located on a man-rated 6-DOF motion platform (Rexroth-Hydraudyne). Simple (single) impacts consisted of 100 ms quarter-sine jolts in the side-to-side (L and R) and vertical upward (V) directions with peak amplitude at 0.4 g. Complex impacts consisted of combinations of two simple (single) impacts in sequence (LV, RV, VL, VR), separated by 100 ms. Twelve right-handed males (23.7 ± 7.8 years old) were tested without a blindfold under 2 posture conditions (supported while leaning back and unsupported, sitting upright) and 2 seat suspension conditions (present or absent). Each type of impact was repeated three times under each posture and suspension condition, resulting in 84 impacts in total. Surface EMG signals from the left and right erector spinae (ES), rectus abdominis (AR), external obliques (EO) and internal obliques (IO) were recorded and transformed to 25ms RMS values. The response time, defined as the time the muscle activity exceeded the mean + 2 STD of the pre-impact resting period, peak response amplitude, and time were then derived. A mixed-model repeated measures analysis of variance was used to evaluate statistical significance, where type I error rate was set at .05. Results One question we asked of these data was whether there were differences in responses related to simple single strike impacts (L, R, or V) and complex, double-strike impacts (LV, RV, VL, VR). There are 21 possible combinations of comparisons of simple and complex impacts to each other. The differences found are listed in Table 1.

In this work, research of reduction process was studied by means of rotary kiln (u1.5 m /C215 m) process anatomy in order to provide fine guidance to large-scale operation. It was shown that the average reduction degree of 89.96% and metallization ratio of 85.15% were obtained at the highest temperature of 977°C and total residence time of 90 min. The generation amount of metallic iron in section of temperature higher than 900°C and lower than 900°C was 34.15 and 56.38%, respectively. The section of lower temperature of 830–900 °C played an important role in formation of metallic iron, making it possible for mini-pellet to reduce quickly at lower temperature. Two main tasks were completed for mini-pellets in rotary kiln: the reduction of iron oxides in the range of 15.0–4.5 m as well as migration and bene ficiation of metallic iron, facilitating the subsequent separation of iron and gangue minerals.

In the 1990s the German mining industry introduced a new generation of shield supports. The new design of support has a maximum load capacity of 10,000 kN, making these units as strong as the shields used in Australia and in the USA. DMT took more than 3,100 underground observations in order to verify the roof fall frequency by statistical analysis. The results of this work have led to practical recommendations for roof control and the required shield support system on longwall faces. The underground observations have been correlated to Rock Mass Classification, to stress calculations and to the angle between the direction of the fissures and the direction of longwall mining_ The analysis work yielded the following two sets of results: 1. There is a critical distance between the canopy tip and the coal face (Tip to Face TF,n,). The TF,n, is predictable and relates to: the thickness of the first roof layer and its uniaxial compressive strength. The face support should have a TF that is less than the TFcrtt in every underground longwall situation. Exceeding the TF crit call immediately result in a roof fall. 2. Using the obtained regression equation DMT is able to calculate the probability of the roof fall frequency (FF), which describes the roof fall sensitivity. When TFcr;, is exceeded the predicted roof fall FF relates to: the measured support resistance (MSR) of the shield support the calculated vertical stress (p?) the fissure-direction index (DI = angle between main fissure direction and direction of mining) and the distance by which TFcrit is exceeded (ATF). Armed with these results DMT is now able to predict the critical distance between the tip of the canopy and the coal face (TFcrit), as well as the roof fall frequency, for all shield designs. By applying the new calculation method it is now possible to compare alternative longwall layouts and different shield support types under pre-set geological conditions. Mining engineers on site are therefore in a position to make the necessary roof control preparations required to run the longwall operation to maximum efficiency. The results provide a useful basis for making practical recommendations and for selecting the most effective design of shield support. The paper uses practical examples to demonstrate the R&D results and present the various methods now available for calculation and prediction in longwall roof control.

THE object of the present paper is to enlarge somewhat on the general principles advanced in my discussion 1 of Mathewson and Phillips' article on. The Recrystallization of Cold-Worked Alpha Brass on Annealing.2 It will also serve as an acknowledgment of Prof. Howe's3 most important remarks on my contribution. In this paper the writer has adopted Prof. Howe's suggestion to substitute the term "germinative temperature" for "critical temperature for grain growth." Instead of being an exact or certain temperature it should be considered that the germinative temperature phenomenon exists throughout a small temperature range. Factors Influencing Fast Growth Phenomena The development of grains of macroscopic size at the germinative temperature should be considered the extreme condition of a general rule. When considered in this light it is not strange that the development of these large grains should be the exception and not the rule. The principal factors influencing the operation of the laws of fast growth temperature are as follows: 1. Rate of heating.

The contents of three platinum group metals (PGM-platinum, palladium and rhodium), from the spent automotive catalyst, and two NIST SRM (National Institute of Standard and Technology Standard Reference Material, Used Auto Catalysts) were determined by the X-ray fluorescence (XRF) spectrometry. The XRF technique has been proven to be a fast, effective and accurate method in determining not only PGM but also other solid materials of less soluble for wet digestion analysis. The detection limit of the XRF analysis is better than that of the inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry which usually requires significant dilution to avoid high dissolved solid concentration. However, the XRF technique suffers from a strong matrix dependent problem. The objective of this study was to examine the applicability of the XRF analysis where the sample matrix was not exactly the same as the standard materials with particular reference to PGM analysis. This study enabled to compare the effect of various matrices including alumina, iron, copper and nickel on determination of the contents of PGM.

Wastewater from nickel lateritic process still has valuable metals that could be recovered. Using an ion exchange to recovery these metals, the iron becomes a problem due to the fact that it precipitate at pH 2. The aim of this research was to make iron soluble by reducing Fe+3 to Fe+2. A synthetic solution was prepared with sulfate ferric. The reducing agent sodium dithionite was used and the potential was varied (initial potential: 700, 600, 500, 450 e 400 mV) using as a reference the Pourbaix diagram for iron created by HydroMedusa software. The pH was ranged between 0.5 and 2.5, the reducing agent’s concentration was 0.5 M and the reaction time ranged between 30 and 120 min at room temperature. The ferric iron and total iron concentration were verified using a spectrophotometer with 5-sulfosalicylic acid (SSA) to determine Fe(III) and ammonia to determine Fe(II) and Fe(III) in 500 and 425 nm, respectively. The results indicated that total reduction was at 400 mV in any pH between 0.5 and 2, but less than 40% in pH 2.5 at this potential value.

"There are several methods for estimating the axial capacity of drilled shafts installed in coarse-grained soils. Most methods estimate the ultimate capacity for side friction and tip resistance. Design capacity is then calculated by applying a resistance factor to the ultimate capacity. In reality, however, ultimate resistance may not be mobilized except after a significant displacement that is not structurally tolerated in either compression or tension modes.A full- scale load test is the best way to obtain the load settlement curve for a drilled shaft, especially in soil formations where accurate estimation of soil frictional properties from a field investigation may be difficult. This paper presents the results of a static, axial, compressive bi-directional load test, using the Osterberg method (O-cell test). The test was designed so that the shaft above the O-cell would move up and the shaft below it would move down when loaded. At the start of the test the concrete around the O-cell is fractured generally on a plane near the bottom of the cell.The test was designed to validate the design capacity of drilled shafts embedded into the Vashon recessional outwash (Qvro), which is a glacially derived sediment consisting of thick deposits of cobbly sand and gravel relatively free of silt and clay found in the Seattle, WA area. The test shaft consisted of a 2.5- feet (0.75 m) diameter drilled shaft. The test shaft was installed to a depth of about 47 feet (14.3 m) into this formation. A maximum load of 437 kips (1.95 MN) was applied during the test, in each direction. The maximum load was attained at upward and downward displacements of less than 0.1 inch (2.5 mm), respectively.Although the load test did not yield ultimate values, the results are compared to the design assumptions using methods adopted in the FHWA and AASHTO guidelines, which verified the adequacy of the design assumptions. We conclude that more emphasis is needed in the prediction of the service loads and corresponding mobilized displacement that may lead to a more cost effective design. It is also clear that more testing to higher loads could lead to more efficient designs on specific projects and generally as data is added to the local knowledge base."

Abstract -The Riviera tungsten occurrence in the Cape Province of South Africa was discovered in October 1979 as a result of stream-sediment panned concentrate sampling. The Cape age granite and late Precambrian Malmesbury Group carbonates and chlorite schists which it intrudes and which host the mineralization are covered by between 10 m and 30 m of Tertiary/Recent alluvium and clay. The scheelite/powellite and molybdenite mineralization occurs in a greisenized granite cupola with an overprint of porphyry-type alteration as well as in minor skarns. The ore reserve is estimated to be 46 million tonnes at an average grade of 0.2160Jo W03 and 0.020% Mo. The deposit is uneconomic at current tungsten prices.

A.B. Rushton The work and resulting publications of the Committee on Underground Coal Mine Safety and The President's Commission on Coal were appropriate at the time of publication. The statistics cited in the publications appeared to be valid, and the actions proposed by the committee had merit. Although the actions proposed to achieve further improvements in safety may have been worthy of repeating, to associate statistics (Table 1) that are seven to eight years old with company names is bad. Statistics are readily available from the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) and are usually within three months of being up to date. A review of the most recent Coal Controlling Co. Report will reveal significant changes in the rankings. The more recent statistics should have been cited, or at least compared with those used in the article. Westmoreland Coal Co. is listed as having a 21.1 disabling injury rate for the period (1/78-12/80). The disabling injury rate for the Company for the year ending 1985 was 7.4 for the underground mines and 6.25 for the total facilities. Through March 1986, the disabling rate for the underground mines was 2.86. The management and employees of Westmoreland Coal Co. are committed to safety. The improvements achieved over the past five years attest to that commitment. We are justifiably proud of the achievement and dislike being misrepresented as in the April 1986 article. Reply by E.M. Spokes I regret that the lapse of time since the original work gives a picture of safety practice that is no longer true today. That Westmoreland has reduced its disabling injury rate by 65% to 7.4 in 1985 is most commendable, and I congratulate you for this accomplishment. It is typical of the progress sought by the National Academy of Science and National Research Council when they funded the original study and published "Toward Safer Underground Coal Mines" in 1982. If a significant number of companies do as well as Westmoreland, the report will have served its purpose. Since the paper was primarily a condensation of the original report, it would not have been appropriate to seek access to later statistics. The purpose in seeking its publication at the time of presentation was to reach those who might have missed the original report. The fact that publication was delayed has not voided that purpose and may have reminded some who were aware of the original that its recommendations still apply to improvement of underground coal mine safety.
